OUR CHAPTER

Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of graduate brothers, many whom were initiated into Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to the undergraduate brothers and continue the work of Alpha. Chartered by 22 distingushed men of Alpha which included Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle.

CHAPTER LEGACY

There has been six members who served as the General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and two whom served as the Eastern Region Vice President. Mu Lambda is equally proud of our current brothers making their mark in the Washington D.C. community and beyond. Our chapter has many entrepreneurs, activists, political leaders, philanthropists, academicians, ministers and so much more. Our diverse brotherhood age range is between the ages of 25 and 98. We all work together to maximize the brotherhood of Alpha by following the Objective, Mission and AIMS of our Fraternity.

FIRST OFFICERS

The officers elected at the first meeting were Brother Harold StrattonPresident, Brother John Lowery-Vice President, Brother Victor DalySecretary, Brother Daniel W. EdmondsTreasurer, and Brother Nathaniel Allison Murray (Jewel)-Chaplain. Mu Lambda was thus established and was on its way into history!

The President’s Message

MAY MESSAGE

Greetings Brothers,

As we head toward the end of the official fraternal year and the start of the penultimate month of my service as your President I continue to be proud of the state of the 111th House of Alpha. During the course of the previous month I was honored to represent Mu Lambda in celebration of Brothers and the business of Alpha.

Often on our minds is the work of Alpha and how well are we doing it, such as our strong representation at the recent Eastern Region Convention, dues payments, March for Babies, etc. But during the past month I found it to be profoundly moving for me at personal level to represent the Chapter at the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Beta Chapter 1963 initiates The 33 of Nobility. And to be the speaker at the 99th birthday celebration of our Brother Arlester Brown. And just hanging out my Mu Lambda Chapter Brothers fellowshipping during the recent Eastern Region Convention and taking a picture with one of my Alpha mentors Brother Leroy Lowery at the convention. For me great experiences that are not the “work” of Alpha but just as important in the Alpha experience that I continue to receive and am appreciative of.

As we head into our 100th Charter Day celebrations I look forward to those moments of celebration of our Brothers as well with all of you and adding to my personal Alpha experience.

A THANK YOU FROM SPRING ‘23

As many of you already know, the Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. has been endeavoring to bring in the Centennial class of members for the past several months.

Through this arduous process, nine of us have gone from being total strangers to Brothers. As President of our class, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support and guidance on this once in a lifetime journey. Special thanks must be accorded to our chapter President, Brother Tony Wilson and our Dean, Brother Karl Bruce. We do not take this solemn obligation lightly. Several of us (including myself) have long family traditions within

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity while others are literally charting a new course for their own families.

As Mu Lambda chapter approaches its centennial year, each of us has had to ask, how we want to remember and honor the past, while paving the way for the second century of Mu Lambda men.

Our class represents a wide array of professions and experiences, and it is our most sincere hope that we will be seen as another strong link in this sacred bond of brotherhood. We have much to contribute, and even more to still learn, but it is my sincerest hope, prayer, and expectation that we will be the most dedicated Alpha men that we can be, with the support of our more experienced chapter Brothers. MU LAMBDA & ERC 91

We had a great time networking, bonding, and handling the business of Alpha down in Hampton VA at the 91st Eastern Regional Convention this weekend. We extend congratulations to the Epsilon Pi (Norfolk State University) and Alpha Phi Lambda (Norfolk Alumni Chapter) who won the Charles H Wesley Brotherhood Award. Congratulations to both Chapters as they represent the Eastern Region at this year’s General Convention.

One reoccurring topic of discussion during this weekend’s panels were strengthening the relationship between Alumni and College chapters. I breathed a sigh of knowing the bond between Beta and Mu Lambda Chapters is already deep and strong as ever. Now that we have the blueprint and dusted off our competitive spirit after 11 years, we will clinch title next year.

Once again special thanks to Bro James Harmon (Alumni Advisor, Mu Lambda) and Brother Ryan Hall (President, Beta) for their dedicated efforts to get us to the Regional competition.

I want to thank all Brothers involved on the Awards committee; however, special thanks goes to Brothers Mikael LaRoche, Jeffrey Taylor, and Samuel Armstrong. Your time and commitment are applauded and appreciated.

Bro. Alex Ball (14-B-22) (BBA, Marketing) Will be heading to Dallas, TX after graduation to begin his new position at AT&T Telecommunications.

Bro. Nnamdi Olebara (15-B-22) (BBA, Computer Information SystemsCum Laude)Will be staying in the DC Area pursuing his MBA and has accepted an offer with Equity Now Inc as an IT Administrator.

Bro. Lethan Hampton (18-B-22) (BS, Biology - Summa Cum Laude)

Accepted into a postbacc program at MD Anderson in Houston for one year. He’s got a fellowship offer from all University of California schools to pursue research in graduate school. He’ll be Pursuing a MD/ PhD.

The accumulative GPA of the chapter is: 3.46

In addition to all of this, the chapter found the time and energy to bring in another exceptional group of 12 young men in Spring 2023. We are certain these new brothers will continue the task to develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.

We wanted to thank outgoing Beta President, Bro. Ryan Hall, on the amazing job he did this year leading the chapter, especially as a neophyte president. And to wish good luck, to the new incoming Beta President, Bro. Raymir Johnson, as he takes over the presidential duties for the 2023-2024 school year.

Bro. Phil Jones (8-B-18) Recently accepted a new role as manager of basketball operations and player development with the NBA G-League Team, Greensboro Swarm.

Bro. Junious Whitaker (9-B-19) graduates from Howard University with his Masters in History and begins his Doctorate in African Studies.

Bro. Jon Logan (3-B-20) has been accepted to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts’s Film program to pursue his MFA and will begin his program in the fall.

BRO. CARTER ON THE VOICE OF DOMINOS

Congratulations to Mu Lambda Brother Malcolm Carter, (Beta 1987), who was featured in the 2023 Issue 1 of The Voice of Domino’s Franchisees. In the article Brother Malcolm Carter President of South Marlboro Pizza and Marlboro Pizza shared his journey and keys to success of building his business to one of a limited number of African American owned Domino’s franchises. Brother Carter started with Domino’s 33 years ago in 1990 after graduation from Howard University where he managed a store in District Heights MD. Brother Carter a natural, intelligent and gifted business man quickly rose through the ranks of the local Domino’s organizations being a significant contributor and learning the business.

After 11 years, in 2001, Brother Carter was presented with an opportunity to be a franchise owner and the rest is history. In 2005 Domino’s corporate organization sold Brother Carter three stores in recognition of his successful stewardship of three stores he owned since 2001. In 2017 Brother Carter expanded his business buying two stores from Team Washington, with one of the stores being the store where his Domino’s journey began in District Heights MD. Today Brother Carter has been a franchisee for 22 years, owning 8 stores with a team of 220 members supported by a staff of 8 managers.

In the article Brother Carter shared what animates him – Family. His immediate family wife Limin, daughters Jazmine, Jozslyne and Vivian, and his mom Mrs. Carter. Also his adopted family of the Brotherhood of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. From the article “I’m heavily involved with my Fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The objective of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, is to stimulate the ambition of its members; prepare them for the greatest usefulness in the cause of humanity, freedom, and dignity of the individual; to encourage the highest and noblest form of manhood; and to aid downtrodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic, and intellectual status”.

STROKE AWARENESS MONTH

A stroke occurs every 40 seconds in the United States. A stroke is an artery blockage or bursting blood vessel which cuts off the brain’s blood supply. Impacted parts of the brain die very quickly without blood and oxygen, leading to a degree of brain damage and possible death.

80% of strokes are preventable by:

• Maintaining a healthy weight

• Reducing and eliminating smoking

• Getting tested for diabetes

• Checking cholesterol and triglyceride levels regularly

• Moderating alcohol consumption

ALS AWARENESS MONTH

ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is rare disease that is not well understood or familiar to most people. In America, ALS is commonly referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s disease”; named after the 1930s baseball player who developed the condition. Gehrig was renown as being the “iron man of baseball. Unfortunately, upon obtaining the disease Lou Gehrig, as with most people with ALS, died within a few years.

Currently there is no cure. Efforts are centered around improving the understanding of ALS. It is a progressive disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As ALS damages the nerve cells, the muscles of the body become affected.

Over 5,00 people are diagnosed with ALS annually. More than 200,000 Americans are living with ALS. ALS strikes most often between the ages 40 and 70, and the disease affects military veterans approximately twice as often as the general public.

ATHRITIS AWARENESS MONTH

Arthritis is a condition that currently affects over 53 million Americans and is expected to grow to over 67 million people by the year 2030. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. and has an economic impact of over $156 million in medical expenses and lost wages.

The major forms of Arthritis:

• Osteoarthritis: most common form of arthritis which results in the wearing down of the cartilage at the ends of bones; bone rubbing against bone, causing pain.

• Rheumatoid arthritis: disease that causes an inflammatory reaction in the lining of joints; causing the joint deterioration.

• Psoriatic arthritis: occurs in people who have psoriasis; affecting joints, ligaments and tendons.

Some common Arthritis misconceptions are:

• Only affects the elderly >> Arthritis can occur at any age.

• Exercise may make worse >> Exercise improves muscle strength which can take some of the pressure away from the joints.

• All joint pain is related to arthritis >> Other causes of joint pain exists, i.e., gout, bursitis, lupus and tendonitis.

THE MU LAMBDA BROS’ CORNER

Brother Jonathan F. Brown is originally from New Bern, NC and now living in Washington DC. Currently working full time as a manager of strategic engagement for a federal benefits company parttime as development coordinator for a nonprofit that provides therapeutic services for survivors of human trafficking, sexual and domestic partner violence. In 2009, Jonathan graduated with an B.S. in Psychology from North Carolina A&T State University then earned his M.S. in 2016 from California Southern University in Psychology with a focus in Industrial & Organizational Psychology.

Jonathan joined the Blue & Gold Marching Machine marching band in 2005 and then was initiated into Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Inc at North Carolina A&T State University in March 2007. He later became a Life Member of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Inc. in 2016 and the first and current Vice President of Program for the Iota Zeta Alumni Association 2018.

Jonathan is also a proud veteran as he started his journey with 4 years in Air Force ROTC at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, then as an activeduty member of the United States Air Force from 2010-2016, stationed at Grand Forks AFB in North Dakota. After finishing up his time in the military, he taught as an adjunct professor at Craven

Community College & later transitioned to the full-time university area as an Advancement and Development program manager at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Jonathan also recognizes the need to support his university institution and has been a member of 2 different North Carolina A&T State University alumni associations, currently in Washington D.C. & formerly in the charter area of Greensboro, NC. While in Greensboro as a member of the Gate City chapter, he was a part of the fundraising, social and scholarship committees.

His time there was well spent as he helped spearhead scholarship logistics, interviews & donations for high school students, created fundraising initiatives such as a scholarship ball & helped plan membership drives for the alumni association. He hopes to continue this level of effort and excellence into his new home alumni chapter in Washington, DC as a current member of the scholarship committee.

FEDERAL DONATIONS TO MU LAMBDA

Brothers, it is that time of year when we begin to think in the spirit of giving and giving thanks. In that spirit, the Mu Lambda Foundation participates in two key funding programs through which federal and District of Columbia employees can share the gift of the giving.

The Combined Federal Campaign - CFC (https://www.opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign) is a resource that allows U.S. government employees to make regular payroll deductions in support of the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable and community service programs.

The DC One Fund (https://os.dc.gov/page/dc-one-fund-each-one-give-one) provides an opportunity for employees of the District of Columbia to do the same. All donations through these funds are tax deductible and deducted from your paycheck regularly. What could be an easier or better way to support the programs you care about?

As open season begins for 2023, you may plan your weekly, biweekly, or monthly contributions to the Mu Lambda Foundation by contributing to charity number 66770 in the CFC, and number 9556 in the DC One Fund.

Greeting Brothers,

The 2019-2023 fraternal year was dedicated to rediscovering our brotherhood. We serve the community, but we have been neglecting our bond of brotherhood.

Since Tuesday, April 21, 2020, Mu Lambda has hosted the Mu Lambda Literary Society, every week at 7:00 pm. The Mu Lambda Literary Society is a Mu Lambda initiative, where we come together as brothers and discuss the two volume Alpha history book over a period of months. It was facilitated by a different brother each week. Brothers participated via Zoom.

We started with volume 1, chapter 1 of the twenty second printing of the history book and conclude with volume 2, chapter 8. There are twenty chapters in volume 1 and eight chapters in volume 2.

It was totally voluntary. You were not required to purchase the new history book. Brother Robert L. Harris, Jr. our National Historian and author of Volume II has participated in the sessions, and all sessions are chaired by our own Bro. Ryle Bell.

Mu Lambda Chapter

I MAY PUT ON A POUND CAKE

Ingredients

• 3 & 1/4 cups white sugar

• 3/4 pound unsalted butter, at room temperature

• 6 extra large eggs, at room temperature

• 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

• 3 cups all-purpose flour

• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

• 1 cup 1% milk

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease and flour a 12-cup fluted tube pan (such as Bundt)

2. Cream sugar and butter in a large mixing bowl on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating for 45 seconds after each addition. Add vanilla extract and beat for 30 seconds.

3. Combine flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg in a medium bowl. Add 1/2 of the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix on low speed until just blended. Add 1/2 cup milk and beat on low speed until just blended. Scrape the sides of the bowl with a spatula between each addition. Repeat with remaining flour mixture and milk.

4. Pour batter into the prepared baking pan, filling no more than 2/3 full. Smooth the top with a spoon or a spatula.

5. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the cake is just starting to pull away from the sides of the pan, about 1 hour and 25 minutes.

6. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 15 minutes before inverting onto a plate. Allow it to cool completely before serving.

KENTUCKY BUCK

Ingredients Makes 1 drink

• 2 strawberries, hulled

• 1/2 oz. (15 ml) 1:1 simple syrup (see headnote)

• 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon

• 3/4 oz (22 ml) fresh lemon juice

• 2 dashes Angostura bitters

• 3 oz (90 ml) ginger beer

• Strawberry, to garnish

Gently muddle the strawberries with the Simple Syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add the bourbon, lemon juice, and Angostura bitters, then fill with ice and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds. Double strain into a highball glass filled with fresh ice and top with the ginger beer. Garnish with a fresh strawberry.

Backstory

A strawberry-bourbon buck created by San Diego bartender Erick Castro of Polite Provisions.

For the simple syrup, combine equal parts hot water and sugar in a resealable, airtight container and shake until all of the sugar dissolves. When refrigerated, the syrup keeps for 1 to 2 weeks.

The fraternity’s fraternal year runs January 1st to December 31st.

Mu Lambda’s 2022-2023 fraternal year runs September 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023. The chapter does not meet during July and August.

It is now time to pay your 2022-2023 dues which will cover you from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023.
