Hello Oils. Everything you need to know about essential oils.

CLAIR BOONE

Hi there!

In 2014 I was sitting where you are right now - a box of essential oils on hand and a diffuser ready to go. With 2 young boys I was determined to make some changes for our family but I had no clue how to use the oils. I fired up the diffuser, added some water and oils, and nearly freaked out when my youngest put his head over it! I had no clue it was cold steam and that there was nothing to worry about!

That's what led me to write this book. My desire is that you will be given the knowledge and confidence in this book to use Young Living oils and products. Our Oilers on a Mission team is full of people just like you - some who started off nervous to use oils and unsure how to do it and yet they're now lifelong fans. We have daily testimonies of people's lives changing through these little bottles of goodness and it's my desire that you'll be the next story! We're a team full of families who want to live more toxin free lifestyles, who desire to feel better without side effects, and who want to live long, healthy lives. Get ready for your life to change in so many exciting ways!

xo, Clair

What are Essential Oils?

For thousands of years people have been using the aromatic, volatile liquid that’s within many shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. These liquids are known as essential oils and are usually extracted through steam distillation, hydrodistillation, or cold-pressed extraction. Highly concentrated, and far more potent than dried herbs, large volumes of plant material produce small amounts of a distilled essential oil. For example, it takes 5,000 pounds of rose petals to produce 2.2 pounds of Rose essential oil!

The Lifeblood of Plants. Through the process of photosynthesis, certain plants can produce more than just fruit. They also convert nutrients into essential oils in order to protect themselves from sickness and insect damage. Essential oils are said to be the immune system of the plant – the building blocks of the plant’s DNA. This helps us understand how essential oils carry vital nutrients throughout a plant so that it stays healthy and strong. Essential oils can support the health and wellness of humans the same way they support the health and wellness of the original plant they were distilled from, oxygenating and detoxifying where needed most. Working to support every human and animal body system on a cellular level, the therapeutic properties of essential oils promote healthy brain and immune system function, healthy weight, and even emotional support.

Substance of Memories. Fragrance is said the be the substance of memories and research shows that when the pure constituents in essential oils are inhaled it can activate regions of the brain associated with memory, state of mind, and emotion. When inhaled, it only takes 22 seconds for an essential oils to reach the brain stimulating your limbic system and playing a role in emotions, behaviors, sense of smell and long-term memory.

Seed to Seal Not all essential oils are created equally. Young Living will never knowingly compromise by adding synthetics, contaminants, or cheap fillers, or by using unethical production practices. For more information see www.seedtoseal.com

Science

While the product quality starts in the fields, it’s proven in state-of-the-art labs. The D. Gary Young Research Institute and Quality program are staffed with more than 50 highly trained, highly skilled scientists who use advanced testing methods to help ensure that products meet lofty standards. Product testing doesn’t take place exclusively within the two in-house labs. Young Living also works with more than a dozen of the world’s leading, independent, and accredited labs with highly skilled and trained scientists who specialize in advanced product testing.

Standards

As the leader of the modern essential oils movement, Young Living believes it's part of their global stewardship and accountability to do business responsibly - from sustainably sourcing rare botanicals, to uplifting local communities, to going above and beyond to comply with local environmental rules. Inexpensive essential oils are often synthetic, adulterated, or unethically sourced, which is why we choose partners who produce pure essential oils and ingredients ethically and legally. This practice sets a top-tier standard for sustainability.

Some Safety Tips. Due to the potency of essential oils, it is important to follow safety guidelines when using them • Read the product label for appropriate use. • Avoid putting essential oils in your eyes, ear canals, and other sensitive areas. • Stop using the oil if irritation or discomfort on the skin occurs, and do not rinse with water. Apply a carrier oil to the affected area. • Citrus-based oils and blends may cause temporary photosensitivity. Follow individual label instructions and avoid direct sunlight for 12–48 hours. • See individual oil labels for specific dilution instructions. • Essential oils rich in menthol (such as peppermint) should not be applied to children under 18 months old. • If you've got any allergens, test a small amount on an area of sensivite skin before applying the oil all over. • Epileptics and those with high blood pressure should be aware that high ketone oils are to be used with caution. These include Basil, Rosemary, Sage, and Tansy oils.

How-to Apply Oils. The way we apply oils varies based on the need. However consistency is always key and sometimes just choosing an oil and getting it into your body is a good way to start. One good place to start is on your feet. Apply in the morning and at night to start your journey!

Topical Put the oil where you need it! Add 2–3 drops to a carrier oil during a calming or therapeutic massage. Brighten your complexion with a few drops of a floral essential oil or Frankincense added to your daily moisturizer. Make rollers of your favorite blends for easy application.

Aromatic Rub 2–3 drops between your palms, cup them together, and inhale. Turn bath time into bliss time by adding several drops to your tub’s water. Fill every room in your home with your favorite scents by diffusing oils. Add a couple of drops to a bowl of hot water, cover your heard with a towel, and breathe.

Internal Support your healthy lifestyle by adding a few drops of Vitality oil to a gel capsule. Flavor water, coffee, or any beverage with a drop or two. Add them to your favorite NingXia Red® beverages! Use Vitality oils in lieu of ground herbs or spices to heat up your cooking.

Some essential oils may be too strong to be used on their own so we use a carrier oil. This also helps when covering a larger area on your body. Use Young Living’s V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex or other pure vegetable oil when diluting to the appropriate strength for your needs. NEAT means to apply with no carrier oil.

Supplies to Get You Started. There are thousands of books and resources out there as well as roller bottles, spray bottles, and more. That's why we came up with a list of our favorite supplies and resources to help you use your oils! Head here for a list.

Ingredients to Avoid.

Take a peak at some of the products in your home. What ingredients did you find? In addition to never using artificial dyes, harsh chemicals, or fragrances other than essential oils, Young Living is committed to using naturally derived ingredients you can feel confident about. Directly from the Young Living Blog, here is a list of the top 10 ingredients you’ll never find in a Young Living product. • Glycols (propylene, butylene, hexylene, caprylyl): Glycols are moisturizing agents. There isn’t enough research to declare them as safe to use, so why take the risk? • Triclosan: This is an antimicrobial agent, often found in toothpastes and hand soaps, that was recently banned by the FDA for antiseptic skin products due to lack of data regarding its safety and efficacy. • Nanoparticles: Commonly found in sunscreen. These reactive particles can be very unpredictable and are small enough to pass through cell membranes and enter the bloodstream. • Formaldehyde: This preservative is often seen in lotions, cosmetics, and baby wipes. After repeated contact, skin sensitivity may arise. • Oxybenzone: This organic compound is an example of an ingredient that could be toxic to the symbiotic algae that lives within coral and might pose a huge threat to coral reef. As conscious stewards of the environment, we use reef-friendly sunscreen ingredients such as zinc oxide (non-nano) or titanium dioxide (non-nano) in our sunscreen. .• BHA and BHT: These are common synthetic preservatives found in fatty oils or carrier oils. There’s a reason other companies use these ingredients, even if they haven’t been proven to be safe or properly researched. In our creams and lotions, instead of using these preservatives, we choose to utilize naturally derived ingredients such as essential oils, pH regulators, acid regulators, and plant extracts.

Chemicals Lurking. More than 40 nations – ranging from major industrialized economies like the United Kingdom and Germany to developing states like Cambodia and Vietnam – have enacted regulations specifically targeting the safety and ingredients of cosmetics and personal care products. Some of these nations have restricted or completely banned more than 1,400 chemicals from cosmetic products. By contrast, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has banned or restricted only 30 chemicals for safety reasons.

Regulators in some nations subject formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, and chemicals that release formaldehyde, to tight restrictions. But formaldehyde is still used personal care products sold in the U.S.

The FDA has banned the use of triclosan, which disrupts the hormone system, in antiseptic wash products like liquid hand soaps, but not in other consumer products.

Parabens are regulated in Japan, the EU and the Southeast Asian nations, where officials have set maximum concentration standards.

Toulene, linked to reproductive and neurological harm, is restricted in nail products in Europe and Southeast Asian nations, but can be used at any level in cosmetics sold in the U.S.

While the European Union has spent the past 20 years fighting to restrict over 1,400 harmful chemicals in personal care products, Canada has banned around 600. Compare that to the number banned in the United States…..30. There’s a huge gap! Countries all over the world are banning things that used to be allowed because the science has now been proven that they’re harmful. Not the U.S though.

Dangers in Your Home. American dermatological research has shown for over 40 years that it’s not only what we put in our body that’s absorbed, but also what we put on it. A study published in 2010 in the journal Environmental Health, suggests frequent use of household cleaning products may boost breast cancer risk. Air fresheners and products to control mold and mildew were particularly linked, says researcher Julia Brody, PhD, executive director of the Silent Spring Institute in Newton, Mass., who led the study. The American Lung Association has said that "many cleaning supplies or household products can irritate the eyes or throat, or cause headaches and other health problems, including cancer. Some products release dangerous chemicals, including volatile organic compounds. Other harmful ingredients include ammonia and bleach.” A study published in 2018 in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine titled “Generic Respiratory Symptoms and Branded Lung Diseases: Same Difference?” indicates that people who use cleaning products, in spray form, on a regular basis risk causing long-term damage to their lungs. The extent of this depends on the chemicals in the sprays. In some instances, with cleaners w ho are required to clean surfaces regularly the decline in lung function is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes each day!

- Becca Wilcher

"I love LR because it is a monthly reminder to keep taking my supplements when it arrives! I also love earning points and being able to try something new for FREE!"

Join the Movement. Young Living is a world-changing community, and our Oilers on a Mission team is here to welcome you on board! We hope you'll make lasting changes in your family by joining Essential Rewards and sharing about the benefits of a toxin free home. Welcome to the Tribe!

Share The Love. If you've fallen in love with these products like we have, sharing about them is super simple! While sharing about the lifetsyle is never required if you know someone who can benefit from toxic free cleaners, plant based supplements, or oils, then why not share? Go to yl.pe and enter your member ID in both spots. It will then give you a link to share. If your friend wants to get a Starter Kit give them that number to get started! Young Living will send you a thank you check around the 15th of each month. How's that for an Easy Button?!
