Hi there!
"'Tis the season for baking treats, gift giving, and stores filled with enticing gifts. Shops now have dedictaed areas just for spa-like fun but the question is: how safe are the products? In a recent EWG study 702 lipbalms were ranked and 267 of them found to have unsafe ingredients in like cinnamal, citral, and even parabens. Innocent little lipbalms that we buy to stuff stockings and as treats for kiddos are full of nasty chemicals. It's because of studies like this that in 2010 I started really reading ingredients in our personal care products. As a Mum of 3 kiddos I'm the gatekeeper of our home and it's vital to me that our products are free of chemicals. That's why I like making things. But don't fret! Before you assume this is gonna be hard let me walk you through some easy recipes for the holidays.

Disclaimer Friend - have you ever bought gas station coffee? Sure it was coffee but I doubt it tasted like a nicely brewed pumpkin spice latte from your favorite local coffee shop! It may have said "coffee", smelled like coffee, and even looked like coffee but when you tasted a drop you probably knew: this was not the amazing brewed coffee you were looking for. It's the same with oils. There's actually nothing governing what goes into them and consequently in an effort to make them cheaper and faster companies are cropping up and selling "gas station oils." Did you know it takes 5,000 pounds of rose petals to produce 1 Kilo (2.2 pounds) of valuable Rose essential oil? If you're buying it for gas station prices the chances are there's little oil in there. That's why we only trust and recommend Young Living. I've used it on my 4 year old daughter since she was 3 hours old (yup that's not a typo!) and trust their quality. They have a Seed to Seal promise and its three pillars—Sourcing, Science, and Standards and I've never seen them compromise. While I'm not a medical professional and am not here to treat, diagnose, or cure you, I am a Mama. A Mama on a mission to share the chemical free lifetsyle we've enjoyed for years with anyone who's willing to listen!
Supplies to Get You Started.
There are thousands of books and resources out there as well as roller bottles, spray bottles, and more. Before it all seems overwhelming we came up with a list of items to help you make these recipes! Head here for a list.
Chest Rub. A common ingredient found in most chest rubs bought in stores is petrolatum. This is a byproduct of petroleum, often referred to as petroleum jelly. However, studies conducted by Columbia University show that the side effects of petrolatum include: -Traces of petrolatum byproduct found in breast tumors -Suffocation of the skin -Premature aging -Aggravated acne Using store bought chest rubs can not only put your current health situation at risk, it can also affect your health situation in the long run. Your skin is extremely absorbent - meaning it will absorb every good and bad ingredient from the products you apply topically, and transfer those ingredients into your blood stream and body systems. By simply tossing out your store bought chest rubs and replacing it with ones you can create using Young Living Oils, you will be saving money and protecting your wellness with confidence, care, and wisdom.
Recipe.
10 drops Raven 10 drops Lavender 5 drops Lemon 5 drops Frankincense Mix 3 TBS coconut oil with the above oils. Add into a small glass jar (4oz or less) Seal and use as needed on chest or bottom of tiny piggies. Store cost: $6. DIY cost: $4.50
Thieves Chest Rub. Not feeling in the mood to make a chest rub> Thieves Chest Rub is a must-have for every medicine cabinet. It soothes your family’s sniffles, coughs, and congestion with a powerful blend of essential oils and natural, plant-based ingredients. Thieves Chest rub does cough control the natural way, free of petroleum, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, synthetic perfumes or dyes, artificial colors, or preservatives. Turn to Thieves Chest Rub when a cold gets you down for natural, maximum-strength relief.
Stink Away Spray. If you look on the back of most store-bought toilet odor sprays, it will show the word “fragrance” in the ingredients list. According to research done by The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, "fragrance" is not just one ingredient. Rather, it is a generic category with tons of toxic chemicals lumped into one word, mainly so those chemicals can avoid being written out on the label itself. The toxins in the word “fragrance” have been proven not only dangerous, but harmful to human health, and can produce side effects such as:Skin irritation-Sperm damage-Hormonal imbalances-Cellular disturbances-HeadachesEmotional imbalances-Allergic reactions. Using store bought toilet odor sprays can not only put your current health situation at risk, it can also affect your health situation in the long run. Here's an easy alternative!
Recipe. 7 drops Purification 5 drops Thieves 2 drops Lemon 1 TBS witch hazel Add oils and witch hazel to a 2oz spray bottle. Fill with water and shake well. Store bought: $8. DIY: $2.36
Scented Pine Cones. If you're like me and the very smell of those scented pine cones in certain stores sends you nose into a tizzy and your throat into a mess, you're not alone! Fragrances instigate asthma attacks, impair the breathing of people with COPD, trigger allergy symptoms, and cause those with multiple chemical sensitivity to become ill. Scented products are irritating to 30.5% of the population and 19% experience adverse health effects due to scents. Instead of breathing in all that fragrance here's an easy, inexpensive recipe to use those beautiful pinecones.
Ingredients 1/2 cup of cornstarch 2 tsp white vinegar 1 tsp salt 2 c. water Christmas Spirit Essential Oil.
Directions Bring the first 4 ingredients to a boil on the stove and whisk out lumps. Once it's translucent remove it and let it cool completely. Add in 5 drops of Christmas Spirit Oil. Brush onto pinecones.
Makeup Remover Wipes. Many board-certified dermatologists have done research and come out to say that your conventional makeup remover wipes are loaded with harmful chemicals. Dr. Jeanine B. Downie, for example, says that most of these makeup remover wipes are alcohol-based, which can be especially irritating or drying to the skin. Other makeup removers can also block pores significantly and cause breakouts in acne-prone patients. Another doctor who has studied this in depth, Dr. Susan Stuart, the founder and medical director of La Jolla Dermatology, says this below: “Although quick and easy to apply, many makeup removers contain active cleansing ingredients, which may remain on the skin unless washed off. If they remain, the residue from them may expose the skin to excess amounts of various chemicals including emulsifiers and surfactants. These can dry the skin and also irritate it. Some of them also contain various preservatives including formaldehyde, which can be an allergenic, as well as fragrances.
Recipe. 1/2 cup water 1 TBS coconut oil 1 TBS castille soap 1 TBS witch hazel 5 drops Frankincense + 5 drops YL Lavender Mix all ingredients together in an 8oz glass jar. Shake. Add in cotton rounds to fill. Store price: $7.50. DIY: $4.25
Lavender Hot Chocolate. Ingredients 4 cups unsweetened almond, dairy, or milk of your choice 8 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 teaspoons honey, or more to taste 4 drops Lavender Vitality essential oil
Instructions Heat 4 cups of milk in a saucepan on medium-high heat. Add 8 tablespoons unsweetened raw cocoa, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 4 teaspoons honey; whisk until smooth. When warm, remove from heat and stir in 4 drops Lavender Vitality essential oil. Serve and enjoy!
Sugar Scrub. Common ingredients found in most exfoliating skin scrubs bought in stores are parabens. These are preservatives used to increase the life of products, and are not designed for your wellness at all. In fact, doctors call parabens "endocrine disruptors,, meaning they can wreak major havoc on your hormones, and in turn can do much more damage in the long run. Parabens have even been found in breast tumor biopsy samples, leading some scientists to speculate that parabens may cause breast cancer. Even if you aren't using products containing parabens directly on your breasts, since your skin is extremely absorbent, these dangerous chemicals can find their way to all parts of your body, no matter where you apply them. Scary, huh?
Ingredients Cup of organic white sugar 1/4 cup of coconut oil 1/2 tsp vanilla 5 drops Young Living Lavender + 5 drops Young Living Lemon 4oz jar. Mix ingredients together in a bowl and then transfer to jar. Store bought: $10. DIY: $2.70
Carpet Cleaner. Although using carpet freshening powders are a popular "solution" for cleansing and deodorizing, almost all store-bought carpet fresheners contain an incredibly long list of toxic and dangerous ingredients. These toxins include formaldehyde, sodium hydroxide and pesticides - all of which can produce physical, internal, external, emotional, and even lifethreatening side effects. Using store bought carpet fresheners can not only put your current health situation at risk, it can also affect your health situation in the long run. Your skin, especially the bottoms of your feet, are extremely absorbent. When you or your family walks on the carpet with bare feet, your feet absorb every single one of those chemicals, and they transfer into your blood stream. Also, the bottoms of your feet have what's called "Vitaflex Points," which are points that connect to every major area of your body. Knowing all of that is highly terrifying, and makes you think twice about what you're using!
Recipe. 1 cup of aluminum free baking soda 15 drops of Young Living Lemon or Citrus Fresh 8 oz glass jar. Add ingredients in and shake. Sprinkle on carpets as needed and then vacuum up. Store bought: $3.25 DIY Cost: $1.25
Perfume. There's just something about adding a spritz of fragrance that makes you feel totally put together. On top of the perfect outfit, nicely combed hair, fresh makeup and your favorite jewelry, adding something to make you smell as good as you feel just completes the package. Am I right? However, unfortunately, all of your extremely expensive foo-foo juices are in fact extremely dangerous, extremely toxic, and extremely hazardous to your health. Not only does the word "fragrance" contain phthalates, formaldehyde, aldehydes, and other toxins derived from petrochemicals, many people don't realize that these ingredients are even listed on the EPA's hazardous waste list.
Recipe. 1 tsp vodka or witch hazel (witch hazel will change the scent ) 7 drops Stress Away Oil 7 drops Frankincense Oil Small spray bottle like this. Add all ingredients into the spray bottle and shake well to mix. fill with water. Shake before using each time. Store bought: $30+ DIY: $2.73

Muscle Roller. Did you know that most sports and muscle creams you buy at the store can not only cause serious damage to your body, it can even kill you? When you absorb the chemicals in those creams in large enough amounts through your skin, it can literally be poisoning you to death. Don't believe me? In 2007, a 17-year-old crosscountry runner from Staten Island, New York named Arielle Newman, died. After a two-month investigation, the New York medical examiner ruled that her death was caused by absorbing a fatal amount of chemicals from sports creams through her skin. While she simply used those sports creams from the store to soothe her tired muscles after running for miles, it ultimately took her life at a tragic young age.

Snowman Dryer Balls. Many store-bought dryer sheets contain an incredibly long list of toxic and dangerous ingredients, most of which they will not list on the back of the box. In fact, dryer sheets are considered as one of the most dangerous products in your home. Why? When you throw in dryer sheets into a load of laundry, the heat absorbs the chemicals into your clothes. You then wear those clothes all day long, giving those toxins plenty of time to seep into your skin and bloodstream throughout the day. Using store bought dryer sheets can not only put your current health situation at risk, it can also affect your health situation in the long run.
