FROM SOCCER, WHEN IT COMES TO KIDS’ ACTIVITIES, PARENTS TODAY ARE SPOLIT FOR CHOICE. WHATEVER YOUR CHILD WANTS TO TRY, THERE WILL BE A CLASS FOR IT. AND THOUGH YOU DON’T WANT TO OVERSUBSCRIBE YOUR LITTLE ONE, GETTING THEM INVOLVED IN A REGULAR ACTIVITY COMES WITH MANY BENEFITS.... AND THEY ARE NEVER TOO YOUNG TO START.

0-5 YEARS OLD

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

One of the first activities that kids usually get involved in is swimming. Living in an island, learning to swim is an essential as learning to walk and talk. There are many swim schools around, from those at the local council pool to private lessons. Look for an environment where children aren’t distracted with other classes or movement around the pool, and a low pupil to teacher ratio.

12

A significant amount of parent participation is expected at most activities until kids are around three years old, so be prepared to join in! And at this age it doesn’t matter so much about the specifics of the activity, its more about trying things out. Look for something that is fun and offers a wide range of movement and coordination. For preschool kids, look for anything that involves running, jumping, ball skills, coordination, group work and taking turns. Activities at this stage are also about getting you out of the house and socialising with other parents in the local community, and craft group, a music and movement session, or a preschool team.

6-10 YEARS OLD

BENEFITS OF TEAM SPORTS

Similar to the preschool years, the primary years are a time to develop those core skills of strength, coordination and confidence.

As well as increasing fitness, coordination and being active, team sports have many other benefits, which include: • Teaching kids to lose and win graciously • Developing cooperation and leadership skills • Kids who play team sports are less likely to feel isolated • Can help kids overcome shyness • Teaching kids to work as a team • Giving kids a sense of belonging • Making kids more resilient though shared wins and challenges • Boosting self-esteem

For primary kids, again anything that uses a variety of skills is great ball skills, strength work, teamwork. Every child has different likes and dislikes, so it’s about doing something they find interesting. So if they like being outside, try a ball sport; if they prefer being indoors try dance or martial arts. If you aren’t sure what to choose, try something such as athletics that has a variety of different activities, or an all-rounded sports programme that rotates through a different sport each week. Testing out a different activity each week might give your child enough exposure to one sport to them move on and concentrate on that sport alone, or they might enjoy staying in the rotation programme... either is fine!

WHEN A CHILD WANTS TO QUIT... Whatever you choose, there will possibly come a time when your child simply doesn’t want to go to their activity. But before they quit, take a look at why they no longer want to participate.

MAMI GURUMI I stumbled over a crochet kit and instantly loved the idea of making toys out of yarn. I wasn’t very confident in the beginning, but with a lot of research and practice I quickly developed my skills and, more importantly, had so much fun crocheting. My passion grew stronger day by day and now I would call myself a real addict.

M

ami Gurumi is a hobby turned business by Deniz Hunter, a mother of 2 boys who is currently staying here in Bahrain. Like most mums in business, she also started her hobby with a sole purpose of having an activity to help her relax from the everyday stress of motherhood. Inspired by Amigurumi, which is the Japanese art of knitting and crocheting, Mami Gurumi has transformed her passion into stunning handmade crochet treasures that she now sell online through social media pages.

The best advice I can give to new learners is just to be patient. Depending on size and complexity, some toys can really take a lot of time to finish. However, once you sew together all the parts and see the finished product, you get very proud of yourself. For me personally the biggest joy is when I hand over the toy to a child and see their big smile and sparkle in their eyes. Sometimes I get messages from moms, telling me that their child took the toy to school or that they are even sleeping with it. This truly is the biggest reward.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BAHRAIN?

WHERE CAN PEOPLE ORDER YOUR PRODUCTS?

I moved from Germany to Bahrain just over four years ago. Definitely not planning on leaving any time soon, I just love this country!

People can check my products on Facebook or Instagram. Occasionally, I sell on markets which I announce on my social media pages.

WHEN DID YOU START DOING CROCHET AND WHERE DID YOU LEARN ABOUT IT?

HOW TO ORDER YOUR PRODUCTS?

MAMA GURUMI

I only started in February 2017. I am a self-taught crocheter and learnt it through YouTube videos and crochet books.

18

WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO MOTHERS OR ANYONE WHO ARE JUST NOW STARTING TO LEARN CROCHET?

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DO CROCHET? As all moms would agree, having a toddler and a young baby at home is hard work and quite stressful. I was looking for a crafty activity for myself that would help me relax from everyday life and clear my mind. I just didn’t know what sort of craft to do until one day

People can just send me a message on Facebook or Instagram. I also make a lot of custom orders. If anyone would like to have an animal or toy that I haven’t made before, they can just message me what they have in mind and I am sure I can come up with something. I love it when my customers get creative!

TECHNOLOGY OVER THE YEARS, TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN ADVANCING SO RAPIDLY AND THIS SEEMS PARTICULARLY TRUE WHEN IT COMES TO THE LATEST BABY TECHNOLOGY. SO WHAT REALLY WORKS AND WHAT TECHNOLOGY WILL MAKE EVERY MOTHER’S LIFE EASIER? TO GUIDE YOU THROUGH THE SELECTION PROCESS, WE HAVE MADE A LIST OF THE LATEST AND MOST USEFUL TECHS AVAILABLE TODAY.

PLAYTIME Playtime has come a long way since the days of a solitary rattle and blankie. Young children love playing with shapes, whether using them to complete a puzzle, building with them, or spotting them in the real world. But, while previous generations made do with wooden shapes and puzzles, toddlers nowadays have an iPad alternative. If baby is always reaching for your phone, the VTech Touch and Swipe Baby phone is a great replacement. A toy that looks and feels like a phone, she can happily feel tech-connected without accidentally updating your Facebook status.

BABY TECH

For those wanting the best-of-the-best in rockers (and those who are tired of driving their little one around the block to get some shut-eye), the MamaRoo® is the ultimate rocking seat that replicates natural motions of a parents’ comforting swing. With four built-in sounds as well as connectivity for any MP3 device, the MamaRoo® comes with five unique motions including car ride, tree swing and rock-a-bye and more. Fisher-Price toys are always popular and their latest offering, the Bright Beat Smart Touch Play Space, is no exception. Featuring smart touch technology that responds to baby’s touch with music, lights and colours, it introduces your baby to numbers, colours and music, as well as developing motor skills and teaching cause and effect. If you can’t tempt your iPad away from toddler fingers, the Tiggly Shapes game is the perfect antidote. Using four magnetic shapes, the player places the shapes on a screen to solve a number of problems, taking interactive learning to a whole new level.

SLEEPING For growth, health and happiness (as well as your own sanity) you want your little one to sleep soundly and safely, and there are hundreds of products available promising to help you through. The Baby Shusher is a new and effective soothing device that is bound to help parents have an easier time in dealing with a newborn cry. We’ve all been in this situation and we tried every trick in the book from swinging, swadling to pacifiers but none of them seemed to work consistently. Now that the technology has been advancing, there is actually a product that can make your parenthood life way easier. The Baby Shusher is a revolutionary tool for parent that uses an ancient, but doctor-tested and approved rhythmic shushing technique to help soothe your inconsolable baby. This noise machine mimics the rhythmic sounds of the womb, triggering your baby’s “natural calming reflex,” helping to stop them from crying. Price: BD 13++ High-tech baby monitors also lead the way, with a number of new market entries to choose from. The Sproutling is a tiny sensor in a band that goes around a baby’s ankle that monitors their heart rate, temperature, movements and position, and feeds the information back to your smartphone. SYMPTOMS Sinuses are air-filled pockets located on either side of the nose, close to the eyes and in the forehead region which open into the nasal passage by small openings thereby ventilating and draining the sinuses and keeping them healthy. Any obstruction to these openings can cause a build-up of mucus within and lead to infection. While in most cases, the obstruction is caused by pre-existing cold or allergies, in others it may be due to an abnormal microanatomy of the nose and sinus. Chronic sinusitis sets in when the blockage and the sinus inflammation persists three months or more. Common symptoms include: facial pain, pressure, congestion or fullness. Difficulty breathing through the nose; discharge of yellow or green mucus from the nose; loss of the sense of smell; headache, fatigue; sore throat; bad breath.

There is a solution to this though. Although typical treatment begins with medications prescribed by your doctor, not all patients get relief with medication. For those who failed the medical treatment, a surgical procedure may be recommended. The latest surgical technique in this field is Balloon Sinuplasty. This procedure is safe and minimally invasive, whereby the sinus passages are opened. The surgeon threads a soft-tipped guide wire equipped with a tiny balloon into the nostrils and up to the area of blockage. The balloon is then inflated just enough to open the passageway. Finally, the sinus is washed to flush out the pus and mucus

BALLOON SINUPLASTY TECHNOLOGY This surgery is safe and relieves the pain and pressure associated with chronic sinusitis without cutting and removing the natural structures. The recovery time is shorter compared to conventional surgery. Thousands of patients have experienced long-term improvement in their quality of life after this procedure. Although most patients can be treated with this method alone but some patients with infection of Ethmoid Sinuses need conventional endoscopic surgery in addition as balloon technology works for all the other sinuses except Ethmoids. Royal Bahrain Hospital offers the most advanced and safe procedures to help people who suffer from recurrent sinus infections. This procedure is called Balloon Sinuplasty and is approved by FDA, USA.

MOST OF THE CHILDREN ARE NATURALLY DRWAN TO NATURE FROM AN EARLY AGE. THEY LOVE LOOKING AT BUGS, PICKING FLOWERS AND PLAYING IN THE DIRT. THIS IS DUE TO OUR CONNECTION WITH NATURE AND LIVING THINGS, AND IT MUST BE NURTURED AS CHILDREN GROW OLDER TO DEVELOP RESPECT AND CONNECTION FOR THE EARTH AND OTHERS. One of the best ways to connect with nature is through gardening. Gardening provides opportunities to learn, explore, stimulate senses and experience many of life’s lessons, which is perfect for children. Encouraging an interest in gardening from a young age will instill a love for nature in children and develop and interest in how food is grown.

KDS IN THE GARDEN

The key to developing an interest is firstly to let children explore nature without too many boundaries - obiously considering safetly at all times - allowing them to explore, touch, feel, smell, hear and even taste the delight found throughout the garden. Find wonderful things that stimulate your child’s senses and have fun doing it, and you’ll create memories and an interest that will stay with them for years to come.

30

Another thing to consider is to not overwhelm children with too many rules or things for them to do, so my tip for gardening with kids is to keep it simple. Start with small, simple and fun activities that create interest without being a chore. Also ensure that there are positive outcomes in everything you do. Don’t set your kids up for failure or they are likely to not try it again.

1.

Don’t freak out if they get dirty. Everything can be washed off and the experience is so much better when kids get their hands and feet in the dirt or on the grass (and they’ll actually build up their immune system by connecting with the Earth). Always wash hands when you are finished This sets up good hygiene habits with kids.

HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS FOR GETTING YOUR KIDS INTO THE GARDEN

2.

Start with something that already interests them. This could be picking pretty flowers, making mud pies, or picking food and eating it in the garden.

3.

5.

6.

4.

Try growing in createive containes - recycle old items to grow plants in such as old boots, buckets, wheelbarrows and bathtubs. Also recycle old toys like tip trucks, diggers or tubs and grow something bright in these they’re perfect for succulents.

8. Include activities that help your kids to learn new words and to read information about the plants. When planting seeds use small plastic labels as they’re perfect for writing plant names on. This encourages kids to read labels and seed packets and write down the names of the plants. Also include counting seeds and talking about different seed types and sizes. This created great interest in all ages... including adults!

7.

Keep in mind that kids have a short attention span, so give them up to 15 minutes doing an activity (depending on age) and when they start to wander off to something else let them go. They’ll usually find something else in the garden that grabs their attention - butterflies and other bugs usually do this! Pick suitable weather to spend time outdoors. In the heat of summer, the late afternoon either just before or after dinner is a nice time for a garden wander. Overcast days are lovely in the garden, as are the cooler days to enjoy warm sunshine. When planting into your garden try methods of sowing seeds into small pots or directly into the ground, and also planting seedlings (baby plants). This give your kids someting to watch sprout from seed, but also gives them instant results when planting seedlings. Flowers, herbs, and veggies can be grown in your garden from seeds and seedlings, so start to grow by both methods. Have a few gardening tools ready for them to use. Find lightweight tools for smaller children and regular tools for teenagers. Safety is super important when gardening with kids so always wear gloves, hats and enclosed shoes.

We all know that mornings are busy and it’s easy to forget the importance of a nutritious breakfast to set your child up for a great start of the day. Planning ahead and taking just a few extra minutes when preparing breakfast and snacks for school lunch-boxes can have a significant impact on your child’s attention span, concentration, memory and behaviour throughout the school day.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

HOW DO WE MAKE SURE OUR CHILDREN GET THE BEST START OF THE DAY?

32

There is now overwhelming evidence proving the positive benefits of eating a healthy breakfast for developing children. Consuming a nutritious breakfast has been shown to create a feeling of fullness for longer and improve cognitive functioning and academic performance. School-age children who don’t eat breakfast are likely to struggle to activate enough energy in the morning to cope with the demands of school, consequently affecting learning and interaction with other students. Children also need regular small snacks throughout the day to provide them with energy for growth and concentration. A first break snack provides energy for a child’s cognitive development and other physical activity.

THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY NUTRITIONAL SOURCES It is not only the food source we are consuming that is important, but also the quality of the food source and the process it has gone through the end up on our plate. Try out some of the following tips: + Visit a local farmers market and aim to buy local organic produce, which is pesticide and chemical free. A farmers market is a cost-effective way to purchase fresh products. + Use “out of sight, out of mind” thinking and toss out all the processed packages snacks in your pantry. Try this for at least two weeks and I guarantee your children will be happy to eat their new fresh food choices.

+ Create a snack section within your pantry and divide them into segments. Dried fruit, nuts and seeds are excellent snack options.

A BRAIN BOOST FOR BREAKFAST.... Wholegrain bread or organic cereal, fruit, milk, natural yoghurt or eggs are good breakfast options. For children older than two years, low-fat milk or nut milk is a good beverage to include with breakfast. If your child doesn’t enjoy the types of foods generally associated with breakfast, consider serving dinner leftovers or a mix of fresh vegetables that may appeal to them more.

TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY

The biggest household expense for families living in bahrain is housing, followed by transport and recreation. some of our costs are fixed, but we can look at saving money on variable household expenses. LOWER ENERGY COSTS - Reduce power bills

by turning appliances off at the wall when not in use, switching off lights when you leave the room and using the clothes dryer sparingly. Invest in insulation to minimise cooling and heating costs for your home. Install a water-effcient shower head, have two-minute showers.

REVIEW LEISURE COSTS - Precious resources

TOP TIPS TO

SAVE MONEY > Turn appliances off at the wall > Switch off lights when not in use > Install a water-efficient shower head > Wash clothes with cold water > Plan your errands and save on petrol > Buy generic brand groceries > Take a packed lunch to work and School > Support your local farmers market > Revisit your mobile, internet and plans > Have a garage sale > Scan the offers and seasonal discounts

tively for ways to save some money at home. Plant vegetables in your backyard, turn a home-based hobby into a small business or start a weekend market stall.

USE ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORT - Cars are

costly, with insurance, registration and petrol on top of financing costs. Combine shopping and business errands into one trip or leave the car at home. Try car pooling, walking, riding a bicycle or sharing the car with a friend.

can trickle away unnoticed on poor choices. You don’t have to quit all the fun stuff , just reduce spending on extras like takeaway coffee and magazines. Plan a picnic in the park, invite friends and family to play cricket on the beach or sit down with the kids for a game of Monopoly.

LIMIT SPENDING ON GIFTS - Set an afforda-

ble limit for birthday gifts and stick to it. Don’t get caught up in a credit card spending frenzy; the extra debt often takes months to pay off.

CUT GROCERY BILLS - Plan ahead and take a

shopping list to the supermarket to avoid impulse buys. Buy generic brands and shop fortnightly to pick up bulk-buy bargains. Support local growers by buying fresh produce at a farmers’ market

COOK MEALS AT HOME - Take your lunch to work and send the kids to school with packed lunches. Look for recipes that use cheaper ingredients like beans, vegetables and pasta, and try baking your own biscuits and cakes if you have time. As well as being economical, home-cooked meals are more nourishing and tasty. REVIEW SERVICE PROVIDERS - Revisit your

energy, mobile phone and internet plans regularly to ensure you get the best deal.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT MORTGAGE - Review

your mortgage every three to five years to capitalise on the best rates.

RECYCLE - Declutter your home with a garage sale and turn unwanted items into cash. Look for good quality second-hand goods and make big savings. Have a ‘fashion swap party’ with friends, where clothes, shoes and jewellery can be exchanged and shared with friends.
