First day of school -

Are you more nervous than your child? If you’re a mom who’s experiencing a little extra stress at the beginning of a new school year, you’re not alone. In fact, your feeling is more common than you may think — especially if your kids are younger. TACKLING THAT FIRST DAY LIKE A CHAMP Organizing, decorating, and planning recommendations for day one and beyond. Big changes are afoot and they can be scary for the whole family. Where do you start? For parents, there are healthy lunch-boxes to plan, car park drop-offs to coordinate, uniforms to organise and stationery orders to process. Many parents may worry: will their child make friends? Will they grasp the knack of reading? And even, will they

Some parents’ concerns stem from preconceived notions of what skills their child may need. For example, many parents believe their child should be able to read before the first day of school. Fatima says. “The important skills children do require are practical things like managing their own shoes on and off. Also, can your child confidently use the toilet themselves? If a school is unsure about your child’s maturity or considers them borderline, they might ask you to re-interview in six months’ time, to see how your child is advancing. Fatima reminds parents, “We encourage families to enjoy this exciting time. It flies!. It is full of fun, friends, warmth and connections, as well as an incredible amount of learning. WHY CHOOSE

ETONHOUSE

INTERNATIONAL PRE-SCHOOL WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE?

ETONHOUSE PRESCHOOL

Eton House Bahrain values the uniqueness as both a gift and an opportunity, we believe in empowering children to be life- long learners. All our schools globally have outstanding and innovative facilities. They are specially designed to stimulate your child’s learning and development. Our environment focuses on sustainability, it is eco -friendly, organic, green using natural resources for learning and activities and not plastic. We are the only eco-green school in Bahrain who uses natural resources.

16

The dynamics are education is changing, this is widely known through research and Eton House understands this. Children are born with an innate desire to explore, form hypotheses, experiment, observe, and develop conclusions. Research and data prove that children’s learning through their senses has a strong connection to thinking and understanding in science and discovery.

The 21st-century skills are a set of abilities and dispositions that students need to develop in order to succeed in the information age. These include learning, literacy, and life skills that encompass critical and creative thinking, collaboration, communication, flexibility, initiative, leadership, information, and technical literacy. Our Pre School offers an after care Programme for busy families from 1-3pm and After School Activity Club offering Professional Gymnastics and a Creative Arts Activity.

INQUIRY THINK LEARN PROGRAMME The EtonHouse Inquire Think Learn programme, learning goals reflect the ‘whole child’; the child as a physical, cognitive, social and emotional being; and support us in our observation and curriculum design process. As part of this inquiry-based learning approach, young

children at EtonHouse are respected as competent thinkers and communicators and are offered many opportunities to engage with a range of material and resources that extend and challenge their thinking. We incorporate the Reggio Emilia philosophy and learning approaches, we are the only school on the island to implement this philosophy and approach.

WHAT IS REGGIO EMILIA?

100 LANGUAGES There are infinite ways that children can express explore and connect their thoughts, feelings, and imaginings. As educators we recognise that children use the language of construction, design and drama to create their own play. Children are given an opportunity to tinker with technology, sound and light. We give them tools that allows them to express themselves in a hundred different ways.

The Reggio Emilia approach is an educational philosophy focused on pre-school and primary. Instead of rote learning, it teaches through a student-centred approach, using self- directed experiential and inquiry learning environments that are relationship -driven. The approach views children as strong, capable, resilient, rich with wonder and knowledge.

WHY IS THIS PHILOSOPHY EFFECTIVE The Reggio approach has gained popularity in the past two decades due to the fundamental belief in the rights of the children and in the ever-changing landscaping of the economy. It believes that knowledge is not acquired through the didactic teaching in traditional forms of education. Rather, learning happens when children gain context through the process of making meaning from continuous encounters with others and the world.

WELCOME TO Very Berry Nursery We are excited to welcome the new academic year. We opened our doors to the first batch back in 2015, and have been growing and developing ever since. It has been a rewarding experience for all of us here at Very Berry Nursery, and we would like to share that journey with you.

B

eing academics (with 27 years of experience in education between us) helped us realize that there weren’t

many nurseries in Bahrain providing the level of education that would adequately prepare children for their developmental journey ahead. After much research and a lot of hard work, we took it upon ourselves to meticulously craft VERY BERRY NURSERY

an educational curriculum that is informed

18

by modern learning theories and based on the EYFS British Educational System for age groups of 2 months - 4 years.

CURRICULUM Our curriculum, teaching techniques and infant-care methods have evolved over the years, butour development goes beyond just the classroom. We recognize the importance of a healthy, balanced diet for our children and infants aged 18 months to 4 years. That is why our fees include meals for our students. Charged up after their meal, our students engage in supervised play-based learning under the sun or engage in in-class learning activities. Our facilities are monitored 24/7 in order to ensure a safe and hygienic learning environment. Monthly, we take our students on educational field trips, which are designed to foster a healthy environment where our students can interact with each other.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL After listening to parents’ feedback, we even started our very own summer and winter camps, which are now in their fourth year running. We are also currently developing our very own mobile application, which will provide parents with information about their child’s eating, napping and diaper changing schedules.

CONTACT Please contact the Very Berry Team by phone or e-mail, to raise any questions that you might have; to make an appointment to discuss your admissions requirements or to arrange a tour of the school.

Phone: +973 33 909 599 Instagram: @veryberrynursery Facebook: @veryberrynursery Website: www.veryberrybh.com

In addition, the application will provide parents with fingertip access to teachers’ comments, as well as online payment options, which are very flexible as we do accept instalment payments. This is all so you can stay up-to-date-with your child’s progress. For those who haven’t heard about us yet, we invite you to come over for a visit; we would love to show you around.

ASK THE EXPERT Struggling getting your baby to sleep? You are not alone! Baby sleep expert Claire, answers some of your questions. MY SIX-MONTH-OLD BABY GENERALLY SLEEPS WELL FROM 8PM. BUT SHE WAKES FOR A FEED AT 2AM, AND I ALWAYS STRUGGLE TO GET HER BACK TO SLEEP! HELP! The reason you are having difficulty at 2am is because the drive for sleep is lower here than before midnight. The fact that your six-month-old is only waking once overnight for only waking once overnight for and usually only lasts a week or two if you don’t start teaching her she needs your help to go back to sleep at that time. You are best to ignore any playing and go back to bed as engaging is sending the wrong message.

OUR 18-MONTH-OLD STILL CAN’T SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT. HE WILL WAKE CRYING SEVERAL TIMES A NIGHT AND NEED CUDDLING BACK TO SLEEP. WE’VE ENDED UP CO-SLEEPING, 8UT WOULD LIKE TO GET OUR BED BACK! This will take a little bit of work, starting with positive sleep associations in his room, lots of play in there. Is bub crying? Playing? What are you doing to try and get bub to sleep? Is it possible that your intervention is too stimulating? CHOICES

SOME RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER ARE NOT EASY TO CHANGE, LIKE BEING FEMALE AND YOUR AGE, BUT THERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO THAT MAY HELP REDUCE YOUR RISK OF BREAST CANCER. Maintain a healthy body weight: being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing breast cancer, particularly for women who have been through menopause. Be physically active: regular exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight. Research suggests that vigorous exercise when you are young might provide lifelong protection against breast cancer and that even moderate physical activity as an adult can lower your risk of developing breast cancer. Don’t smoke: there is no clear link between smoking and breast cancer, but toxins from cigarettes have been found in breast cells. As smoking is a major cause of heart disease, lung cancer and many other cancers, not smoking is always a smart health choice.

Besides allowing the body to relax and stretch further, the breath works as a bridge between the body and the mind, children become aware of the breath and able to utilize breathing patterns to improve their emotional

KEEPING KIDS TEETH HEALTHY Dental health care starts at birth. Parents should be aware about the importance of baby teeth and how to take good care of them. Teeth cleaning habit can start even before the baby teeth erupt, by wiping the gums with a damp gauze wrapped around the parent’s finger, this will keep the gums healthy and prevent harmful bacterias.

WHEN TO START BRUSHING BABY TEETH ?

SEALANTS CAN STOP CAVITIES BEFORE THEY BEGIN

Tooth brushing starts with the eruption of the first

Preventive dental sealants can be applied when they

gets used to the dental environment and to the regular check ups) and it’s an ongoing relationship between the child and his dentist, and this will lead to a great prevention of dental problems later on where the dentist can detect the smallest cavity and treat it . Parents should be aware to stop the bottle or breastfeeding at night for their child after he gets his first tooth, because milk contains lactose and at night this sugar pools around baby teeth and gums which leads to early decay and what we call early childhood paste according to their age.

have their permanent molars to avoid food stagnation into the deep grooves of their teeth. Topical fluoride application is performed by their dentist regularly to strengthen the teeth structure and make it more resistant to cavities. Wearing a mouthguard is advised while playing specially if you child performs collision and contact sports. Looking after your child’s teeth is very important to their overall health. Coming to cavities , prevention is much more important than treatment. Healthy teeth lead to healthier kid.

When possible, feed your children healthy foods before attending a party so they won’t fill up on sugary foods.

Where possible, children under the age of two should not consume any foods with added sugars, than can hide in yoghurt, food purees, ice blocks and biscuits.

Young children should only have maximum of four teaspoons of sugar per day and this should come from whole foods like fresh fruits and vegetables.

Children up to the age of eight should be guided and helped with brushing and flossing their teeth morning and night, as they are still not proficient enough alone.

Offer children harder foods such as carrot sticks and celery sticks so good chewing is developed. Team these up with some homemade dips such as guacamole or hummus and it’s a delicious treat!

Plain water and plain milk should be the preferred choice of drink.

Make your own healthier options for snacks and froren treats. There are lots of fast and easy recipes online.

As a birth doula the main thing we care about is that you give birth in the way you want. If you want a c-section - fine. If you want minimal interventions - fine. If you want your whole family present - ok. If you want an epidural - ok. Our job is to support you in having a birth that makes you feel in control and empowered. They are learning about post partum mental health and helping mums who have had a traumatic birth.
