HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR CHILD HAS AN ARTICULATION PROBLEM? If a child has difficulties with articulation they might: • Produce speech that is difficult to understand even for family members. • Produce speech that is notably less clear than other children of the same age. • Become frustrated when communicating with others. • Have difficulty joining sounds together. • Tend to use only vowel sounds. • Your child may present with dribbling and have difficulties with eating and drinking.

We often have special offers where the studio fee is discounted, and we will always offer a discount for a group booking. We can offer private group bookings too, for example as a Team Building event.

Or we can bring our Mobile Studio to your party venue! Don’t forget it’s a great party activity for adults too – and you can bring your own refreshments. I AM A TEACHER, IS THIS A PLACE I COULD BRING MY CLASS TO? Yes indeed, many teachers enjoy bringing their classes to Studio Ceramics for Field Trips. Often they have themes they want to represent in ceramics – whether its Monet’s water-lilies for the art classes or The Egyptians for the humanities, or pretty much any theme, we can come up with great ideas to make the Field Trip something really special. Our most popular theme recently has been self-portraits where each child uses clay to add 3D features to a tile on which they have drawn their face. Its amazing how you can easily pick out which tile represents which child! Unlike many Field Trip choices, the children have a unique memento of their visit.

One of the most stressful times in the life of any woman is pregnancy, and while having a baby may be one of the most important and beautiful experiences in life, it can also cause a number of side effects on the body that can be challenging, to say the least. Therefore, many women look for alternative treatments besides dangerous medicines (and their inevitable side effects), and

WHAT YOUR CHILD’S DRAWINGS ARE TELLING YOU? By Sofia de Castro Sousa, Psychologist Children’s drawings are a useful method to monitor the development a child goes through. From about the age of 12-18 months, the average child will be capable of making marks on paper. As the child grows older, these marks become more representative and often more realistic. In this article we will explore together the pattern of development for drawing and also explain what can be inferred from a child’s drawing. As a psychologist dealing with the upsets and problems of childhood, I have long been impressed with how well pictures provide a window through which one can observe a child’s innermost thoughts and feelings. We can identify three major stages that children follow when developing their drawing skills: CHILD’S DRAWINGS
1. Scribbling (2-4 years) 2. Pre-Schematic (4-7 years) 3. Schematic (7+ years)
DEVELOPMENT CHANGES:
1. Scribbling Stage The drawing shows us no realism. The scribbles appear random and unplanned. However, towards the end of the stage a phenomenon described as “fortuitous realism” occurs, where a child may actually interpret their scribble as something other than simply lines. For example, they may see a car where they’ve drawn a mass of lines.
2. Pre-Schematic Stage By now, the child is attempting, with varied success, to represent real things in the world. The focus tends to be on humans, plants/trees and houses/buildings. Salient features of the subject are depicted, but may not always be accurate: for example, most children in this stage draw the human figure by merging the head and body without evidence of a neck.
18
Towards the end of this stage, the drawings become slightly more realistic, and some features that were previously missing may be added, such as clothes, for example. Also, in this stage, the child draws from one single perspective: if she/he draws a man holding a cup, the full hand and cup would be drawn, whereas in reality you would not perceive the whole cup, as part of the hand would mask it from view.
Signs of shyness and timidity tiny figure, short arms, arms clinging to body, no nose and/or mouth
3. Schematic Stage
Signs of anger
By now many detailed features of the object are

and the evidence of schema are present. This means that a child drawing the sea may incorporate fish, shells, sand and other relevant images to match their ‘idea’ of what a sea should involve. Words and symbols may also be used to add further meaning to the image. Pictures of humans will usually include

tioned in the previous stage. There is often depth and a sense of spacial awareness – this is known as “visual realism”; the image is (mostly) realistic.
WHAT DO DRAWINGS CAN TELL US ABOUT A CHILD’S PERSONALITY? Analysing a child’s drawing can give us a valuable perspective of her/his inner soul. Let’s look at some child’s emotions on paper:
2. Paper: the size of the sheet of paper chosen is a good indication of the place a child wants to occupy in general life. The bigger the sheet is, the more the child wants to show themselves off, while choosing a smaller sheet of paper shows that a child has good concentration. Although your child’s pictures do speak louder than words, parents need to remember that picture analysis is a study in itself. Therapists and psychologists

Calming kids’
hospital anxieties Teddy Bear Hospital -Bahrain’s first initiative to reduce childhood anxiety from hospitals and doctors through fun and interactive teaching.
WHAT IS TEDDY BEAR HOSPITAL? Teddy Bear Hospital is an international project whose aim is to reduce childhood anxiety regarding the medical environment, medical procedures, and medical professionals. Such fears are reduced by providing educating the children around a hospital theme and mimicking medical scenarios. Breaking such boundaries will lead to more cooperation with physicians, and therefore more reliable diagnoses, less pain, and more adherence to treatment plans. Bahrain is the 2nd country in the GCC to incorporate this project, after Kuwait. The Arabian Gulf University executed the first Teddy Bear Hospital in the country in December 2017, and this is the 2nd time the event takes place.
HOW DO YOU REDUCE CHILDHOOD ANXIETY THROUGH THIS PROJECT? Teddy Bear Hospital is set up into many different stations composed of: Primary Care, First Aid, Vaccinations and Pharmacy, Radiology, Healthy Living, and Surgery. Here the children will interact with T E D D Y B E A R H O S P I TA L
the “Teddy Bear Doctors,” learn about the different instruments commonly used in the hospital, why they use them, and perform several procedures on their teddy bears, therefore breaking the boundaries between the patient and doctor in aim for them to understand that the medical professionals are not out there to hurt them, and what experience in hospitals is for their benefit.
26
HOW EFFECTIVE HAS THE TEDDY BEAR HOSPITAL BEEN PROVEN TO BE? Our first Teddy Bear Hospital was proven to be very effective. From a total of 432 children who participated in a questionnaire in the first Teddy Bear Hospital that took place in 2017, 41.4% of them claimed to fear needles. In terms of whether they feared hospitals/ doctors, 62% of them said that they were scared prior to participating in Teddy Bear Hospital. After the children partook in the event, 59% of the children claimed that their fears did indeed reduce after their experience at Teddy Bear Hospital, which emphasizes that this project does aid in reducing childhood anxiety and fears toward the medical environment, medical procedures, and medical professionals.

That being said, you also have a tiny life inside your belly, so a great deal of consideration and awareness is necessary for a successful pregnancy workout regiment. If you exercised regularly before you became pregnant, you shouldn’t work out at the same intensity, as the reactions of your body will obviously be different. Pregnant women should shift their workout styles to consistent, low-impact exercises, rather than

any risky balance manoeuvres that could endanger your or your child.
LOW-IMPACT AEROBICS Although most people associate aerobics with a lot of jumping around and bouncing, neither of which seems particularly appealing when pregnant, low-impact aerobics often take place in a pool, eliminating those issues. These types of aerobic classes are often offered to elderly and pregnant individuals, because the resistance of the water maximizes your workout efficiency, without putting any sharp stress on joints and bones.
SWIMMING One of the most low-impact sports that anyone can enjoy is swimming. It is very common for pregnant women to take up swimming, as it can instantly relieve stress and strain on the joints, gets you off your aching feet and ankles, and poses very little threat to your baby (who is already living “underwater” in your amniotic fluid!). Swimming can be continued throughout the course of your pregnancy, making it the perfect exercise to keep you consistently working out. It’s fun, easy, and undeniably beneficial for mothers at any stage of pregnancy.
PLIE BENDS One of the most common complaints that pregnant women and new mothers have is sore thighs and an aching back. Plie bends (yes, like the ballet movement) consist of standing with your feet hip-distance apart, and your toes and knees angled out to 45 degrees. Then, holding onto a chair for support, slowly squat down, keeping your belly up and your back straight. This exercise can strengthen your balance, as well as tone your hamstrings, quadriceps, and butt. You can repeat this movement as many times as is comfortable.

WEIGHT TRAINING The point of pregnancy exercise is to eliminate high-intensity exertion, so weight training is a logical option, particularly to keep your muscles toned and firm. One-arm rows and arm curls are simple and quick exercises that can be done once or twice today, taking up no more than 5 minutes per set. This will help build your muscles for holding your child once he or she is born, and ensure that you can maintain a sturdy frame without bending or hunching, which will lead to back pain and discomfort.
STRETCHING Before you do any exercises with a baby on board, you should stretch adequately to avoid pulling or straining any muscles.
ELLIPTICAL MACHINES It can be hard for dedicated joggers to give up the habit once they get pregnant, but the repetitive impact of running can be detrimental to the pregnancy, and nearly impossible once you are in your final trimester. Elliptical machines, however, provide the same high cardiovascular workout without the constant pounding impact. For those

30-minute ride around your neighbourhood can get your heart rate pumping, ease strain on your ankles and knees, and improve your metabolic efficiency.
