DO ROUTINES REALLY HELP develop children’s LANGUAGE SKILLS? By Abrar Adel Darwish , Director & Speech Therapist Your child’s day is divided into small daily tasks such as eating, washing, playing, etc. Such simple tasks not only help your child in becoming independent. they also promote their language development. Waking up every morning not knowing what’s happening next can be quite confusing for your children. On the contrary, waking up knowing that you will need to first wash, then change and then have breakfast gives your children a sense of security and control as well as developing their language skills.
ROUTINE?
CHILDREN’S LANGUAGE SKILLS
Children thrive on a structure and routine, knowing what comes next helps develop their self-esteem and encourages positive changes in their behaviour. I’m not saying children shouldn’t be free to explore, discover, play in the sand, run in the park and mess around. They should! Child-initiated play is very important for their development, but so is following a daily routine. Following a daily routine whether at home or school encourages a child to take an active role; when doing the same activity over and over again your child will gradually gain confidence, carry out the task independently and even tell you what comes next. Make sure you use the same phrases and words when going through your daily routine as this helps develop your child’s understanding and use of new words.
8
At first your child might not know what ‘socks’ are when you say ‘lets put on your socks’, but the more you use the word as part of your daily routine he’ll start differentiating between, feet, socks and shoes as well as gain the confidence to start using the words he learned.
ROUTINE SHOULD BE Young children are visual learners, so using pictures paired with words to tell your child what comes next can help support their understanding. Set up a visual routine in their room, playroom or kitchen and keep referring to it before starting a new activity and when moving on to the next one. It’s also good to label what you are doing, for example, “we finished dinner time” next is “bath time”. Remember that routines should always be fun and interactive, when it is bath time blow bubbles, splash around and use lots of words to describe what you are doing such as ‘bubbles’, ‘splash’ and ‘1, 2, 3 let’s WASH!’.

SO HOW CAN YOU EDUCATE YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT RAMADAN AND EID WITHOUT MAKING IT BORING FOR THEM? RAMADAN ARTS & CRAFTS WILL ALWAYS COME TO MIND. HERE ARE SOME OF THE MOST FUN AND CREATIVE RAMADAN CRAFTS THAT YOU CAN DO TOGETHER WITH YOUR CHILDREN.
Eid Part y Crackers Want a sweet ending to your Eid al-Fitr feast? Children and adults alike will love breaking open these festive paper crackers -- each one is filled with tiny treats including candy coins, date balls and nougat. • Crepe paper in purple, gold, blue, yellow and pink • Cardboard tubes • Gold twist ties • White paper • Small gold star stickers • Double-sided tape • Glue
RAMADAN CRAFTS

Sponge brush Thin ribbon Small hole punch Newspaper Paper plate Scissors Foam stickers Yellow paint
• Blue paint 1. Draw out a crescent moon shape on your paper plate. In the middle of that opening, draw out a star shape.
1. Cut 11 x 11-inch square of dark purple or gold crepe paper.
2. Cut out your moon shape
2. Attach a piece of double-sided tape to a cardboard tube, place on one edge of crepe paper and roll to cover tube.
4. Lay out your newspaper and paint the star yellow.
3. Secure a twist tie on one end of the cardboard tube. Fill tube with treats. Secure the other end with another twist tie. Fringe ends, if desired.

Ramadan Moon
4. Cut a strip of crepe paper in a contrasting color and glue to rolled party cracker. 5. Draw small moons onto white paper and cut. (Tip: To make a crescent shape, trace a circle from a small round object like a bottle cap or a coin, then a smaller circle within it.) Glue moons in the center of party cracker, affixing a small gold star sticker.
3. Cut out the star shape. 5. Paint your moon shape blue. 6. Take the paper backing off the foam letters and place them on the paper plate. If you don’t have the handy letters that come as stickers, you will need to glue down your letters. 7. Hole punch your paper plate. You’ll only need one punch. 8. Hole punch your star and pull the ribbon through. On the backside, tie a knot. 9. Pull your ribbon through the moon hole punch and tie another knot, so your star won’t slip. Enjoy your wall decoration!

3 sheets of purple card stock paper 3 sheets of metallic gold card stock paper Scrap of white paper Gold foil star stickers Glue Double sided tape Scissors Ruler Pencil
1. Cut the purple and gold sheets of paper into 2’’ x 11’’ strips. 2. Fold the white paper multiple times over into a small rectangle; using a small circular object (like the cap of a glue stick or a coin) trace a crescent shape onto the paper. Cut the shape to reveal several crescents. You will need approximately 5–6 crescents on one strip of paper. 3. On some of the purple strips, glue crescents and add gold star stickers.
1. Print out the mosque lantern template twice (you will need one for the front and one for the back) 2. Put the ruler besides the dotted lines by the sides and press with the bone folder along the lines. This will make it easier to fold in the sides and create those sharp corners on the mosque.
4. Assemble the paper chain by sticking a piece of double sided tape to one end of the paper strip and bending it into a circle. Continue to make the garland by interlinking circles. Alternate between gold paper, plain purple paper and purple paper with crescents and stars.
3. Use your craft knife to cut out all windows and doors. 4. Now cut out the whole mosque by cutting away the thick gray lines. 5. Use your glue stick and glue on the mosque evenly (the same side). Now lay your copy-paper on and press carefully. 6. Cut away any access copy-paper 7. Glue or put the two paper mosques together and you are done! MAY / JUNE 2018 || WWW.MUMSINBAHRAIN.NET

uring the Holy Month of Ramadan, some of us whether we are participating in fasting or not, will be having at least one invitation to an Iftar or communal gathering from our Muslim friends. One should always be keen to show their gratitude when someone has extended their hospitality to be invited in such gathering. BUILD A BEAR WORKSHOP BUILD-A-BEAR-WORKSHOP TEAMS UP WITH POKÉMON, TO BRING ITS UNIQUE MAKEYOUR-OWN-CUDDLY TOY EXPERIENCE TO PIKACHU AND FRIENDS.
THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE Build-A- Bear Workshop has been located on the 2nd floor, of City Centre Bahrain, not far from Virgin megastore, for almost 9 years now. Still a firm favorite with children and parents alike who love making their own customizable stuffed cuddly toys, this April sees a major step forward for the brand with the launch of Pokémon.
BUILD A BEAR WORKSHOP
The world’s only interactive, family, make-your- ownstuffed toys retailer has landed the “rights” to bring its unique brand of family enjoyment to Pikachu, Charmander and Eevee on April 20th . They’ll be joined by Squirtle, Meowth and Bulbasaur bringing you the 6 most popular characters from Pokémon franchise.
24
Guests will still be able to enjoy the full Build-A- Bear “make-your- own” experience, heart ceremony and create a unique birth certificate for their favorite character.
LIMITED EDITIONS FOR GRAB The licence will be for the whole year so there will be lots of great opportunities, special offers and events that will allow kids and collectors to make and collect all six characters throughout the year. “Pokémon” was
the number one selling licence in our US stores last year”, said Paul Marks, General Manager of Build-ABear Gulf States, “we’ve worked really hard for a year now to bring the licence to the GCC and having had a sneak peek at the collection I can say that this is the most fun group of characters we’ve seen since I joined the company”. The characters are super-quality quality, the colours are stand-out bright and Pikachu stands 16” high so make them highly desirable, very collectable and of course, super-cuddly. Build-A- Bear Workshop has 14 outlets throughout the GCC. As well as Bahrain there are stores in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Qatar and Pokémon will launch at more-or- less the same time in all 14 stores.

Breast Cancer AwarEnesS LEARN THE STORY OF DENISE, A CANCER SURVIVOR IN BAHRAIN, WHO COURAGEOUSLY FOUGHT HER WAY TO BEAT THE BATTLE OF THIS HORRIBLE DISEASE WHICH IS BREAST CANCER.
THE START OF A LONG JOURNEY Being a busy, working mum with three young kids I never faced any serious health problems and seldom visited a doctor – a quick dose of Panadol did the trick whenever I was feeling under the weather. This all changed in 2004 when, catching a glimpse in the mirror after showering, I noticed a lump in my right breast. Shocked I thought how the heck have I not noticed this before! I did not need to feel it – it was so large and clearly visible. A bit rattled and nervous I booked an appointment with a GP at American Mission Hospital for that very evening once I had finished work.

SCREENING TEST
26
After a physical exam the doctor advised me to have a mammogram straight away. I had occasionally thought I should have a routine mammo in the past but, having heard stories of how painful they were, and as I always seemed to be busy, I never got around to it. The exam itself was nowhere near as bad as I had imagined. A little discomfort for a few minutes but no big deal. Waiting for the results in the corridor, the furtive glances and whispered conversations of the nurses told me – actually this could be a big deal. Meeting with the doctor again he told me there were some suspicious indications and I should have a needle biopsy as soon as possible. I did this two days later at BDF Hospital and spent the next few days nervously awaiting the results. It was such a relief
when I met with the doctor again and he told me the biopsy didn’t reveal any malignancy but I should have the lump removed just to be on the safe side. A quick, minor operation at AMH followed and then the waiting game again until the pathology report came in. It took quite a long time until AMH called to say I needed to see the doctor again – and I should bring my husband along with me. I knew straight away that this was not going to be good. The Doctor gently dropped the bombshell news to us both – it was breast cancer. When you hear the “C” word your whole world seems to crumble. My husband and I cried bucketsful of tears that day and so many questions raced around my head. How will I tell the kids? How will I be able to handle chemo? How long have I got?
CANCER DIAGNOSIS I was referred to Salmaniya Medical Complex ( SMC) as they were the only hospital providing Oncology services at that time. The doctor told me I would need to have another lumpectomy as not all of the tumor had been removed the first time. After that I would have to have six rounds of chemotherapy followed by daily radiotherapy for a month. I think one of the worst parts of a cancer diagnosis is the fear and uncertainty you face. I had seen so many movies and TV shows where chemo patients were portrayed as being practically bed ridden all the time, constantly
WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YO U C H E C K E D YO U R BR E A S T S ?
throwing up and in acute pain. We are all individuals and react differently to things but, I have to say, the chemo turned out to be nowhere near the horror experience I was expecting. I had to have one dose ( given via IV) every three weeks. This was painless and only took about 45 minutes but there were of course side effects – an awful metallic taste in my mouth, feelings of nausea, less energy than usual – but I was always well enough to go to work the day after each session. The worst thing for me was losing my hair. Once it started to fall out I bit the bullet and got my husband to shave my head. As I have never been one to “faff” around with my hair ( wash, comb and leave to air dry was my approach) losing it actually hit me harder than I expected. Hubby boosted my spirits however as he loved my new Hijab look! Whilst some people suffer side affects from radiotherapy, once again, I was lucky enough to find the whole experience painless and straight forward.
SURVIVING THROUGH IT ALL So 14 years on, and after a couple of more run ins with the bugger called breast cancer, what would I say to anyone just diagnosed? No one wants to have to travel the tough road that cancer leads you down – but your journey, hopefully, will not be as bad as you fearfully imagine. Cancer Research UK statistics show the survival rate with breast cancer has doubled over the last 40 years. An early diagnosis plays a key role in this so do your own breast exams regularly ( your doctor can show you how best to do this). If you find something that concerns you during the exam – go to the doctors
to get it checked out. Have an annual mammogram. This can be done at selected Government Health Centers but most private hospitals now offer them at a reasonable price and you most likely will get the results much quicker from them. I personally think knowledge is power when we are in tough situations in life fear of the unknown can eat away at us and cause severe emotional stress. Ask questions of your doctor about treatment options, symptoms etc maybe do some research of your own. I took great comfort from a website called Breastcancer.org. Here they have loads of easy to understand information about all aspects of breast cancer – plus awesome chat rooms where ladies from all over the world shared their experiences and successes. Going through cancer diagnosis/treatment is tough so being able to share your thoughts/feelings/worries with loved ones or others who have gone through the same thing can be a life saver. I truly believe that having a positive mindset and fighting spirit are just as important as any drugs when we are battling cancer.
VOLOUNTEERING I now volunteer with Bahrain Cancer Society which is a non-profit NGO that raises awareness and funds in the fight against cancer in Bahrain. They can provide information on Oncology specialists and services in Bahrain or offer answers to other questions patients may have. They can be contacted on 17233080 during regular office hours or at info@bahraincancer.com MAY / JUNE 2018 || WWW.MUMSINBAHRAIN.NET

DIGITALIZATION We are living in an era where there is a huge reliance on digitalization! Writing on a piece of paper or reading paperback books is slowly becoming a thing of the past. Day to day activities is practically infused with our electronic devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones. This in turn increases our exposure to Blue Light, which is emitted from the screens of the devices mentioned.
WHAT IS BLUE LIGHT?
THE BLUE LIGHT SCARE!
To simplify, the visible spectrum of light has a red end and a blue end. Rays on the red end have longer wavelengths, thus having less energy. On the other hand, rays on the blue of the spectrum have shorter wavelengths with more energy. We are already exposed to the natural blue light that is emitted from the sun, which plays an important role in regulating Circadian Rhythm, which is the body’s natural wakefulness and sleep cycle. The artificial blue light emitted indoors from fluorescent and LED lighting, flat screen televisions, computers, smartphones and other digital devices contribute only a fraction of the light emitted from the sun. The constant exposure to these devices light is the real scare.

The human eye is not good at blocking this Blue Light as it reaches the retina. Although more research is needed to determine how much natural and manmade Blue Light can the human eye take until disorders become more apparent, as an eye specialist, I recommend the following: • Use anti-reflective glasses or screens if you are planning on using electronic devices for a long period of time. • Reduce your screen time • Take breaks often during long working hours – Follow the rule of 20! 20 feet away from the television & videogames, 20 minutes break time every hour.

INSPIRING CREATIVITY CREATIVITY IS SO MUCH MORE THAN BEING GOOD AT ART, SINGING OR WRITING A STORY. AT THE HEART OF CREATIVITY IS INNOVATION, INGENUITY AND PROBLEM SOLVING: SKILLS THAT ARE DEVELOPED IN CHILDHOOD. WHEN CHILDREN LEARN HOW TO THINK CREATIVELY, THEY BUILD INNER RESOURCES THAT PROVIDE FIRM FOUNDATIONS FOR ADULT LIFE. IT’S A PROCESS BY WHICH CHILDREN COME UP WITH ORIGINAL IDEAS IN ORDER TO MAKE SENSE OF THEIR WORLD. Creativity is far more important for children than adults because it promotes brain development and is crucial for the development of life skills, self-esteem and confidence. Children of all ages possess an innate creativity that far surpasses adults’ creative possibilities. Younger children particularly are. In a manner of speaking, a blank canvas and their creative sensibilities have not been biased or tainted by experience.
INSPIRING CREATIVITY
Creativity is very important for child development and is integral to the learning and individuation process. It nurtures independence, self-expression, diversity and acceptance in children.
30
In general, people use creative processes in order to make decisions, solve problems, make choices, facilitate change and, most importantly, to have fun and explore.
CREATIVE PLAY Simple things that we take for granted can generate hours of creative play for young children as they become absorbed in exploring the materials. You will always see the fun children have with natural materials.
We will always see the fun children have with natural materials like leaves, shells, sand and water. Children have rich imaginations and can easily construct something unique and magical from ordinary objects. Unstructured free play can include creative play alone or with others, imaginative games and make-believe, or exploring play spaces outdoors and indoors. By engaging in this type of play, kids learn to improvise, solve problems and make decisions. Spontaneous play is child-driven, so they naturally take part in age-appropriate activities, whether it is making food in a pretend oven or drawing random things in the sand. Having this time to play and imagine is vital for children’s healthy development. The whole point of play is that it is fun. There is no anxiety about competing with others, and no anxiety about having to ‘get it right’. There is a lot of pressure on children to learn skills, to perform and excel from a very early age, so they need to have downtime where they can just relax and be kids, without having the pressure of organised activities and schedules.
GUIDING CREATIVITY AT HOME
CREATIVE ROADBLOCKS
Giving children the freedom to make choices helps them become creative thinkers. They may need adult guidance and support, but they also need to have some autonomy. The role of a parent is to ensure a variety of materials is available and to suggest options.
Parents and caregivers can block children’s creativity by hovering over them and being too close or involved when they are playing. Children need personal space to play freely without this adult intrusion.
Whatever the activity, parents should show interest, allow children to express their feelings and ask open questions that help them extend their ideas. Parents can encourage them by praising the effort and the uniqueness of the creative process. When children engage in a creative activity, there is no right or wrong way to do it. Creativity is about thinking outside the box, so children learn to express themselves as individuals. Fantasy play allows children to extend their world and explore different experiences in a safe way as they become pretend characters through dress-up games and role-play. This kind of free-flowing creative expressions is important for children’s cognitive development. Parents can support their children’s creativity at home by ensuring that the physical environment and resources will help sustain their creative project. For those quiet, introspective times, children need a space to create that is away from the television and electronic devices. It could be a corner of the room, made comfortable with a few cushions, or an outdoor area set up with a few simple materials. Engaging the children in craft activities at home is easier if there is a basic toolkit of age-appropriate art supplies on hand; for example, crayons, glue, paint, cardboard, shells, beads and buttons. Keeping the supplies in good order and storing them in an accessible place also helps the process run smoothly. Some arts and crafts tend to be highly structured with a limited scope and a predetermined outcome; for example, colouring in. This type of craft leaves very little room for innovation or experimentation and may stifle children’s natural creativity. Instead, look for activities that are open-ended and focus on the process, not the outcome. The activity should ignite children’s curiosity and imagination. Allow children to experiment and have fun with the materials set out for them. If they have some autonomy in how they are going to use the paint, glue or glitter, they will become more inventive and resourceful.
While children may get frustrated with a creative project when they run into a problem, our role as parents is to encourage them to work out a solution for themselves. It is healthy for them to make mistakes and learn from that. When children formulate creative ideas and execute them, they gain self-confidence and independence. Other adult behaviours that inhibit children’s creativity include making decisions for them, focusing on right and wrong answers, and making play too structured. Television is a huge obstacle to creativity. Passive activities, including reading, are opposite to the mechanisms needed for creativity. Creativity is more about output than input and in our modern world, particularly in the last decade or so, we have become more reliant on being stimulated passively that is, doing nothing and being stimulated.
TIME FOR CREATIVITY Finding time for creative activities can be difficult for busy families. Kids have a lot of homework to do every afternoon after school, and there are after-school activities, such as dance and swimming lessons and soccer, so they have very little time midweek for creative play. Children feel empowered by this kind of creative expression and, what’s more, it is great fun. When parents support their children’s creativity like this, they are helping them unlock their potential to become resourceful, innovative thinkers and effective problem-solvers.
NURTURING CREATIVITY How do we help our children achieve their creative potential? Creativity can be encouraged and supported but it cannot be imposed on our children. All we can do is provide the right conditions, then step back and let children take change.

A CHILD’S Self-Esteem
A CHILD’S SELF-ESTEEM

BUILDING SELF-ESTEEM AT AN EARLY STAGE
HOW TO DEVELOP A POSITIVESELF ESTEEM?
A positive sense of self is one of the most useful gifts you can give your child. Children with higher levels of self-esteem feel loved, competent, have better relationships and lower rates of behavioural problems. This in turn helps build and develop them into happy and productive individuals. Self-esteem is defined as “one’s overall evaluation of the self and the feeling engendered by that evaluation” (Crocker 2011). Simplistically self-esteem is the way a child feels about himself and his abilities. Children with low self-esteem however often are self-critical, feel insecure, doubt their abilities and lack confidence. New research is indicating that children establish a sense of self by the age of five (Cvenck and Meltzoff 2016). This is much younger than realized in previous psychological research. So how do we combat negative self-esteem in childhood? This article outlines how parents can help boost self-esteem at home, school, in peer relationships and assess the impact the media has on childhood self-esteem.
First do try and give your child choices. These choices can be pre-selected by you. This will make them feel empowered and give them some independence. For example at breakfast you could offer your child three options and let them select one. Similarly with clothes you can give them three choices and they select one. Learning to make simplistic choices during early childhood will aid your child to make more difficult decisions later on in life.
Children develop their self-esteem from their environment at home & school, their peers, their parents, their social relationships and often the media. In the past, parents were told to give constant praise and reinforcement to children. However, over time research has found better psychological methods to raise self-esteem in children. We can do this by giving children choices, enhancing their independence skills, helping them find hobbies and interests and giving them more responsibility.
As a parent it is natural to want to facilitate children and make everything easier for them. However, it is important to try and be patient and let your child work things out for himself. Sometimes this will take a lot more time than just helping them. However, you want them to learn new skills and feel more confident about doing things. Children need to learn early on that nobody is perfect and you will sometimes make mistakes but it is how you deal with these mistakes that is important. Give your child responsibility for age-appropriate tasks within the household. Assign chores for example such as walking the dog, setting the table and folding laundry etc. This will increase their feelings of competency, problem-solving skills and self-esteem. Also try to never offer insincere praise instead focus on things they have actually done well. Often parents will attempt to get their child to mirror good behaviour from another child by drawing comparisons.
This does not work and psychologically will have a negative effect on their feelings of self. Instead focus on appreciating each child’s individuality and abilities separately. Also try to do at least one activity per week that focuses on quality time with your child. This will encourage healthy family relations. At school try to work with your child’s teacher(s) and find out what their passions are? Are they particularly good at mathematics or show a keen interest in English? Try to hone that skill even further as by identifying something your child is passionate about they will grow in confidence in that specialty. Do not only focus on areas that a child is struggling in. They may never be interested in the subject they are finding difficult, but really flourish in the subject matter they like. During childhood children place a huge emphasis on their peer relationships. They want to “fit in” with their peers, be well-liked and accepted. Like adults children cannot be expected to get along with everyone. So do not force interactions your child does not want. Instead encourage genuine friendships and teach them that it is quality over quantity in relation to friends. Children lead by example so help them by mirror good relationships at home, empathy and mindfulness.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF MEDIA ON SELF ESTEEM? The role of the modern media is becoming increasing powerful in the lives of children. In particular there is a rise in the usage of online activity by children. Currently there is no legislation for minimum age for accessing online activities. According to Ofcom’s statistics (2017) 79% of five to seven year olds and 94% of eight to eleven year olds are using online services. These statistics are vastly different from those even three to four years ago. Particularly vulnerable are children and early teens in the age group from eleven to fourteen. They will often make comparisons between themselves and others on social media. Predominantly on social media apps such as Facebook and Instagram there is a danger attached to children and teenager’s need for “likes” as they see it as validation from others. Social media posts can set unrealistic expectations, create feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. There is also the rise of cyber bullying that can have very damaging psychological effects for the victims.
DOES THE MEDIA HAVE ANY POSITIVE INFLUENCES ON CHILDREN? Psychologically yes the media can have positive influences on children. It helps them see children from different backgrounds, religions and ethnicities can help shape positive
social roles. They may find positive role models for themselves and feel more accepted. Hence aiding them to have better self-esteem. The media has also been successful in teaching children about the gender equality.
HOW CAN WE ENSURE THAT CHILDREN ARE NOT NEGATIVELY IMPACTED FROM THE MEDIA? It is important to sit down with children and “burst” the social media bubble. Remember children do not know life without it. Remind them that images are edited and just because they see a portrayed image of a fabulous lifestyle everyone in life goes through problems and a social media profile is not a realistic snapshot of somebody’s life. With older children you can be more candid about this. Limit internet usage as much as possible. Research has shown that children that spend more than two hours a day on social networking sites are likely to report “psychological distress”. Try and be vigilant about social media accounts opened by your child. Instead encourage them to the media in a positive way for example to find things they are passionate about, educational value or for quality family time with something you enjoy together.
