Hwikyung Events Many events occurred in our school in July. These events remain in my memory. I'll introduce some of them. First, Hwikyung Girls' High School students experienced a dream-tree activity. It was a valuable time that team members could think about their future careers not in grandiose dreams but in small teams. It was unfortunate that because of drawing pictures, painting leafs, cutting papers, we did not have enough time to enjoy this activity fully. But it was fun and nice experience because dream is important and precious for everyone. To achieve our dream, we will make an effort. Second, all students participated in English word contest in July 14,2014. Its purpose was to check students' improvement such as their spelling, vocabulary in English word. It didn't take more
CONTENTS
than an hour. The problem was too difficult to solve for most students but it was an opportunity to learn unfamiliar english words. Third, an odd-number of classes participated in a singing contest on July 15, 2014. Students had practiced hard for almost four months. Its purpose was to encourage students’ unity. Although some classes didn't get a prize, the experience was like a treasure. Maybe they felt cooperation through this contest. Last, students were taught how to do CPR. It was a fun and valuable experience. And we could have self-confidence to conduct CPR. Also, different from the other education that we gave by school, we could do practical exercises. These events were worthy experiences for our school students. Jung Yeeun(1-9)

Keys to Scandinavian Industrial Successes
Do you know the word “Scandinavia”? It is the word which indicates a big peninsula located in the northern part of Europe. But we usually use this word more broadly; we use it as the word indicating Nordic countries, such as Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and sometimes Finland and Iceland. Today, these countries have achieved many successes in various fields. For example, IKEA, although it is not a Swedish company any more but a Dutch company, is a furniture company that is big hit around the world. The products of IKEA are much preferred especially by young people because of their reasonable price and simple and modern design. Also baby products made in Nordic countries are very popular among mothers of the whole world because of their quality and safety. The products of Scandinavian countries are drawing attention of modern people. Then what is the key to this hit? First, we can find that cultural and social background has contributed to this success. People in Nordic countries lead a very high quality life. The social welfare system of Nordic countries is so well established that people can live a comfortable life. Especially, they have made various efforts to build creative and cooperative
Films & Literature
education systems. It helps them to make creative and innovative ideas, which means improving the diverse capability of their people, the most important part of their industry. So that their industry is improving comes as no surprise. Second, Nordic countries use their national images for their products. It is very clear that each of the countries has its sole characteristics and appeal. But Nordic countries are especially strong at making their unique image and using it. Nordic countries have the image that their products will be sturdy, durable, and also refined. And it is true for most of their products. Their efforts toward their remarkable successes are particularly valuable because they are achieved with a methodical base and using their own characteristics. In modern days, many countries and companies are inclined to just look at the gain of the moment. So they are likely to be ruined in a short amount of time. In contrast, Scandinavian counties’ successes will last for a long time because of their care and conservation of their resources and brand. For corporate or even personal success, we should learn these Scandinavian keys of success. Song Dohee (2-10)

The Price of Snacks Everyone from children to adults people usually like eating snacks. Look around our school right now, and some students may be eating snacks. Like this, people enjoy eating snacks. But, some companies in Korea increased the price for snacks and many consumers think this is not reasonable. Companies said that they increased the price because they could not endure the burden of cost any further as personnel expenses and factory operating expenses also increased. Actually the confectionery industry's business profit rate has been on the decline for the past several years. It means they get fewer and fewer profit margins when they sell a bag of snacks. The Business profit rate of Lotte Confectionery was down from 11.2% to 6.8%. Orion's was down
from 9.5% to 6.0%. Profit margin ratios of Haitai Confectionery and Crown Confectionery were down to 6.1% and 9.9%. Consumers' response, however, was negative because the prices of the snacks' raw ingredients are reduced. During the past three years, the prices of main ingredients in food were down as much as 43%. Nitrogen gas packaging, which is called "Half air, half snack" has made them angry too. Snacks are packaged using nitrogen gas to protect snacks from outside impact, but confectionery companies use it for their profit. So when we open the snack pack, there are few snacks compared to their price for that reason. Because of the high-handedness of confectionery companies, consumers choose "wise consumption". They start to buy imported snacks instead of Korean snacks. Recently, sales volume of import
Which Candidate Do You Support? Elections are the typical way citizens can participate in government administration. But the turnout for Korean elections are too low. The reason of turnout degradation is people's misconception that the election day is a holiday. While participating in voting is not obligatory in Korea, in Australia, there is a law that a person who doesn't vote is fined. Korea also needs to establish a policy for increasing voter turnout. As a candidate who is elected through votes has a direct influence on our life, it is necessary for voters to participate actively in voting and have an interest in politics. To encourage voting at a local election, the TV show Moohandojeon ran a special feature named "Delegating the Next Generation Reader," and successfully finished with a high turnout. Also, voters have to shed their old way of thinking that it's okay to simply choose anyone from the candidates. As a way of knowing the candidates and their platforms, citizens should watch televised electoral debates, read the official gazette for the elections, and so on. The National Election Commission has also tried to instill faith in the elections by ensuring fairness throughout the voting process. They monitor election movements for illegal campaigning of a candidate and tighten up the rules and regulations against illegal campaigning. Recently, a local election was held on June 4th and it was the first to implement an advance voting system. Thanks to the system, people are able to vote no matter where they are, without prior notice. Additionally, while all elections have previously been held for just a day, it was possible to participate in this election for three days through the advance voting system, so an increase of voter turnout was expected. snacks has increased over three times during the past five years in major supermarkets. As people buy more imported snacks, the more major supermarkets bring imported snacks. Because they are cheaper than Korean snacks at a major supermarket, they even sell Korean snacks which are produced and sold to other countries. Korean confectionery companies increased the price and reduced quantity because they got fewer sales. But it brought the opposite result. Before, people thought imported snacks were more expensive than Korean snacks, but now Korean snacks became expensive and imported snacks became Korean snacks' substitute. Korean confectionery companies should provide the conscientious price and quantity to consumers to solve this problem. If not, confidence between companies and consumers cannot be restored. Tears in Sweet Chocolate A few months ago, KBS broadcasted documentary “Road for hope – Ghana”. In that documentary, many children worked for a cacao farm. Also, many other documentaries, books, magazines are dealing with this problem. The children are working in poverty, so they can not go to school. Moreover, they received only $3 a week, even they are assaulted by planter. Such child exploitation is very serious not only in Ghana but also in other West African countries. So we should pay attention this serious problem. Now children working for a cacao farm number about 1.8 million. Many of them are working with dangerous tools such as sickle, knife, and agrochemical. They are working in poor working environment. They do not have safety gear, so they are often injured while working, several of them even die. Also, they work 12hours a day and receive little money; some of them are trafficked as slaves. These are common incident in West Africa. They are trafficked at about $15 and worked all their lives on cacao farms. Even though many NGOs, other countries and authorities are trying to solve this problem child exploitation, it still exists. Then, can’t we solve the problem? Here are three solutions. First, we should implement a fair trade policy. Fair trade is that trade implement to level the playing field. The largest problem is cacao’s trade channel. In that channel, there are so many middlemen. So, if we buy a chocolate at 1000 won, the cacao farm gets only 20 won. Thus, if we reduce the number of middlemen through fair trade, we can strengthen farmers’ position. Then we can stop child exploitation, saving people from poverty, and farmers can receive fair cost Second, we can practice the way. we buy fair trade products. FLO (Fair Trade Labeling Organization International) is attaching fair trade certification marks on products or organizations that are certified fair trade. So we can find and buy easily fair trade products such as good chocolate. Buying fair trade products can save children and become a small step to change the world. Third, we can send an e-mail to Chocolate Company to ask them to use fair trade cacao. And, if the Company does not use fair trade cacao, you should request to use fair trade cacao. Sending an e-mail may have low influence, but if many e-mails gather, it must have big influence. There are many solutions besides the above things. When do you face away until this problem? There are still many children who are exploited as a labor force and still suffer because of unscrupulous adults. While we are eating sweet chocolate, many working class children are dying in pain. We should help them. Let’s pay attention to solve the problem. Would you join this step for eliminating child labor? Kim Woojin(3-8)

This graph shows the increase of money wages and unemployment as a conflict connection. If you suppose unemployment rates is X, then the increase of money wages is Y. You could reach this equation: log(Y+0.9)=0.984-1.394X For example, if the unemployment rate is 5.5%, then the increase of money wages should be 0.
Nowadays, the number of unemployed people is rising while wages for the employed are also
increasing. Because young people are coming upon high-ranking positions in companies, if one new person comes, then some other person is kicked out of the company. For this reason, we have to adjust “Phillips Curve” to explain this situation. Phillips made this curve to show the relationship between unemployment and the increase of money wages. As a result, if unemployment rates is low, then, money wage rates is high. In contrast, if money wage rates is low, then unemployment rates is high. When we apply this principle to actual life, if the central bank keep the monetary rates low, so far as the unemployment rates getting high. This situation can adjust the Phillips curve, that is, an opposite connection. This is a function of unemployment rates and the increase of
money wages. This could inform the government to make more jobs and work places plus the government pay attention to inflation and an extensive finance policy, or finance policy. If the money rates are low, then the labor demand increases. After this increase the demand and supply rate will become balanced. But the problem is that the increase of money also increases of our tax. This shows the incompatible connection of economic growth. But in England, this is a believable function and they use this function to develop their nation. If we need to develop our nation, how about using this form of graph? This graph can make our nation grow economically, providing profits to the nation’s economic system and increasing job employment. Yoo Hwihyun(3-9)
The Long Journey of Comet Ison Big news! 21st century’s biggest space show begins! This was the hottest topic of the news in the whole world. The International Science Optics Network found this great comet and named "ISON". Let me introduce the hottest hero from space, Comet Ison. Do you know how famous it is? You can see its popularity by the drama, "You Who Came From the Stars. "Min-jun Do plans to ride Comet Ison and go back his home. Like this, Comet Ison was the hottest space hero throughout the world. Comet Ison was one of the orbs in the Oort cloud. It is the same age as the Sun, forty-six hundred million years old. One day, one orb hit another orb and was caught in an orbit, and that orb became a Comet Ison, which then started a long trip to meet its old friend, the sun. It was discovered by one little telescope and became famous because it seemed to become a big Comet. Comet Ison was in the spotlight.
Culture & Trends
However, Comet Ison revolved in an arc orbit so it is the first and the last chance to meet the sun. It was a sun-grazing comet, which approached the sun in a very close distance. It was once trapped by the gravity of Jupiter and it had to go around Mars. With about 5km of core, 5000km diameter of head and about 9000km ofblue beautiful tail, which is made by burning gas and dust, it kept its long and lonely journey. The hero of space kept going closer to us. In November, Comet Ison achieved its closest distance to the sun. Many astronomers argued whether it would be destroyed by the sun or if it would achieve its wonderful dream of becoming a hero. Comet Ison did meet the sun, however, it died immediately because of the heat of the sun. Only a few parts of itcould survive from extremely hot heat of the sun. It was the end of November. Many people were disappointed because the 21st century’s biggest space show had passed as Comet
Ison had died before it got to the shortest distance from the Earth. Astronomers said if Comet Ison survived, we could have figure out the origin of the solar system. Comet Ison died but we still have hope. Who knows, maybe there will be a new hero, an even bigger, stronger comet waiting to meet us! Park Heejin(2-2)
Solve Problems in SNS(Social Networking Service)!!
Social Networking System Service is worldwide today. Considering the world population, we cannot help being astonished at how many they are! However, problems are happening over and over. More and more people share the information through SNS. We usually trend to make a group in our life. It can be one of big social group or small group with a few people. We formed a social consensus. For example, people upload their daily life or their interests with photos, videos, songs and etc. Then we write reply with expression. And it continued over and over. However, there is something we have
overlooked. When we write our opinion to others, it can be hurt to them, because what people think can differ from individual and individual. Sometimes because of our negative attitude to the people, bad emotion creates rumors and they spread in an instant. Eventually, the problem can only get worse. For example, many entertainers suffer from malicious messages or bad rumors. So they experience frustration and they even think of committing suicide. Also, because of curiosity, our personal information and privacy have been stolen. So we can’t enjoy our SNS life comfortably. Then, how can we ameliorate this situation?
Most important thing you should keep in mind is "Think once again." We need to calm down, and find another place to relieve your stress. So, we always think other’s emotion when they read our rude message. It might seem small thing, but when we look at this in a long-term view, it is valuable things to everyone in our society. It make people smile again. SNS is like a small world. Many people meet here and share things they have. In this process, our opinions and thoughts can be rude. So it's time to think of others, and we will find SNS world is a good place to enjoy our lives. Bae Inji(1-9)

Namhansanseong, Our Great Cultural Heritage! Have you ever been to Namhansanseong? If you like hiking in the mountains, it may sound familiar. Then, do you know that where is it? It is located Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province. Recently, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Are you curious to know how it could be included? Then, let's find out more about Namhansanseong together! There were four big fortresses in the suburbs to defend Seoul. That means that Namhansanseong played a role as a helper for Seoul. Among these fortresses, Namhansanseong was located in the east. It was built by King Munmu of Silla during the Silla-Tang war. However, we don't know which is correct. How could it be designated as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site? It is due to its importance and diversity. This was why UNESCO discovered the greatness of Namhansanseong. We can find a developed defense system from the 17th century in
the example of Namhansanseong. It is surprising that perfect system existed for hundreds of years, isn't it? In addition, it is a good example of a fortified city. It is such a great mountain fortress that it was designated as a temporary capital. If Namhansanseong did not exist, there would be no Korea of today. Namhansanseong must remain in history for a long time. Therefore, Namhansanseong was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a huge treasure to us. And it will be now and forever. If you want to know more about Namhansanseong, how about going to the beautiful place? In conclusion, I wish many people will remember Namhansanseong. Lee Eunchae(1-9)
BIG ISSUE! ‘Killing two birds with one stone.’ This proverb can be applied to the magazine BIG ISSUE. You can help the homeless just by buying the magazine. At the same time, you can get your celebrity’s pictures and interviews. Don’t you want to know how this can be possible? The first BIG ISSUE was published by Gordon Roddick who is the husband of The Body Shop’ s founder, Anita Roddick. He wanted to help the homeless stand on their own two feet. So Roddick made BIG ISSUE magazine using the donations of many people. A lot of celebrities willingly donated their talent. For example, Joan K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, donated her writing, and a lot of celebrities like Angelina Jolie, and David Beckham provided their pictures and
interviews for free. Many people have regarded homeless as lazy and dangerous. But this kind of thought is just prejudice. BIG ISSUE also plays an important role in breaking this prejudice. Even though many people still have negative views, others change their negative thoughts about homeless people into positive ones through BIG ISSUE and homeless vendors who are trying to make a new life. BIG ISSUE KOREA began in 2010. Since then, many people donated their talent to help the homeless, such as Ha Jungwoo, IU, and Lee Hyori. With many people's efforts, a lot of Korean homeless people could become self-reliant. Moreover, BIG ISSUE KOREA also helps the homeless enjoy culture like ballet performances,
and live music. Not just celebrities’ talents are welcomed; you can also donate your talent to help the homeless. You can sell the magazine with a BIG ISSUE vendor, who is called, “Big Pan”, or you can volunteer to pack deliver products at BIG ISSUE office. It will be great experience for you! So, how about buying a BIG ISSUE when you see a BIG ISSUE vendor? Your happiness will be doubled. BIG ISSUE KOREA QR code Choi Hayeon(1-9)
How About Working as a Musical Producer? Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. The five main components of a musical are the script, lyrics, music, dance, and direction. Let's talk about musical producers. Have you heard Sir cameron Anthony Mackintosh? Or have you ever seen Les Miserables, or The Phantom of the Opera? Sir Cameron Anthony Mackintosh(born 17 October 1946) is a British theatrical producer notable for his association with many commercially successful musicals. He was so impressed with "Salad Days" by Julian Slade when he saw it at 8 years old. From then on, he dreamed of becoming a director someday. He is the producer of shows such as Les miserable, The phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon and Cats. This is called the world's fourth-largest musicals. He was described as being "the most successful, influential and powerful theatrical producer in the world" by the New York times. And then what does a producer do?
To make an art product, producers need to plan a process and procedure like this: Whole project> Details of project> Work scripts and lyrics> Analysis script> Train and Practice (dance, song, acting)> Check moving line> Check stage> Check lighting, technique, sound> Rehearsal> Preview performance> Start!! The producer is the one who oversees the whole thing. The musical producer oversees all the business aspects of the production, coordinating everything that involves the events on stage. The producer is responsible for the overall quality and integrity of all musical aspects. The producer is central to the creative process of the theatre. Therefore, they should make their musical with only their colors. A producer leads and directs the musical itself. They have full responsibility for conducting rehearsing, teaching, and inspiring the choir. They have devoted themselves to creating this piece of work. And when the performance imagine how happy you must have been. When you first saw any musical, did you feel your
heart pounding in your chest? If you do, why not consider having a dream of being a musical producer? Hong Jungmin (2-5)

Shake China! The drama <You Who Came From the Stars> which recently completed its run, became a huge hit in China and the Korean were fired through China. Exceeding the popularity, China's biggest political event of “Yanghui.” referred to <You Who Came From the Stars> that “why do we lack the ability to create like that drama?” It gave a cultural shock to China. In addition, idol group EXO, consisting of Chinese members, claimed two prizes in the 2013 Chinese Music Awards. Regarding the Korean wave in China, I was the most curious about the following 3 questions.
1
Question How great is the Korean Wave in China? Answer <You Who Came From the Stars> did not on the air in China, but it was spread on the internet and views surpassed 3 billion. In Korea, the special exhibition of the drama was also popular. The exhibition of the drama’s sets displayed at Dongdaemun Design Plaza DDP) attracted more than 6000 visitors, with the percentage of foreigners reaching about 85% (95% weekday, 75% weekend) out of all visitors. Spectators of greater China accounted 80% of all spectators coming in Korea. Visitors of various countries such as India, the United States, visitors of Taiwan, and Hong Kong have also been increasing. According to the news agency AFP, the media of greater China and Japan also are showing interest.
2
Question Why did that drama shake the continent? Answer In former days, Korean dramas were still popular, but did not become big issues. However, this drama was different. Chinese

media said that the explosion of Korean wave reached a high after the drama “Winter Sonata” and continued through the popularity of<You Who Came From the Stars> The main character’s background of the Joseon era, approximately 400 years ago, and moving across the generations gained sympathy because of the cultural homogeneity. Besides, it seemed that characters of the protagonists and beautiful scenery captured the hearts of young people in china.
3
Question What economic effects caused by Korean Wave can be expected? Answer With this drama, it is hard to find the total because it is intangible content. But there was a change in the distribution and the stock field. Not long ago, a hot issue about an unusual scene was on the internet. The issue was about waiting in line for three hours for Korean chicken in China. In the drama, a scene where the main characters eat ramen was shown, and the during drama’ s broadcasting period of January and February, there was 38% increase of sales to compared to last year. In addition, the main actor, Kim Soo Hyun, agency’s stock increased more than 40%. Increasing in the stock price of the agency means more interest in Korean content in the future. Understanding and respecting other cultures in terms of movies, dramas, pop music, food and a variety of cultural exchange, and if you zoom in with a better attitude will go to open the Korean Wave. If we carry out culture exchange such as movies, dramas, K-POP, and food with understanding mind, the Korean Wave will sweep China more. Lee Jihyun(3-5)
Samsung vs. Their Workers
This February, the movie “Another Family” was released. In the movie, a young woman who was working for Samsung’ s semiconductor company suddenly got leukemia. She and her family were proud to work for Samsung, which is one of the best companies in the world. But they were shocked to hear about her unexpected and unfortunate disease and eventually, she died. After her death, her family asked for an apology and proper compensation from Samsung. However, the company refused to accept their demand and the family started a lonely struggle for compensation for the young lady. You may wonder why Samsung was compelled to apologize to the lady and other workers who died of leukemia, and how leukemia and semiconductors relate to each other. To understand these wonders, you should know what leukemia is. Blood consists of white

blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets; Leukemia affects white blood cells. If someone has leukemia, the number of abnormal cells is high thus normal blood cells decrease their populations. Because of leukemia, our immune system would weaken and be more vulnerable to other serious diseases. And it would be difficult to stop bleeding when we start to bleed. Besides leukemia, many workers in the semiconductor department got brain tumors, breast cancer, anemia, lymphoma, etc. They also got skin cancer and other respiratory diseases. Although many semiconductor workers got these serious diseases, Samsung refused the families’ demand because they did not think leukemia was related to semiconductor. Actually, semiconductor companies are very clean to keep semiconductor safely from dirt. However, semiconductor itself is not that clean. Semiconductor is made by mixing and scattering thousands of chemicals. In fact, semiconductor industry is the major chemical industry. To
protect workers of semiconductor companies, they have to wear dust-free garments and clean masks. Then, the workers can do their jobs well safely. However, according to the workers, Samsung did not provide any good safety garments or they gave poor garments to the workers. They said the garments were not waterproof ones so they did not protect workers from chemicals in the semiconductor. Plus under the pressure of the company to work harder, the workers always had to work in small places fillled with harmful chemicals. However, Samsung did not realize the workers’ suffering and they did not try to listen their workers’ small claims, “We just want to work in more safe place.” And this made their workers ill at last. On May 14th, Samsung finally formally apologized for their mistake of ignoring workers’ sufferings and promised their workers’ families to adequately reward them. It’s very nice to hear Samsung’s apology but the workers who died because of industrial accidents like leukemia can not be revived and nothing can relieve their absurd death. We should not forget but remember these people’s death. Cho Wonhee (2-3)

All About Sociopaths Have you ever seen one of the most famous dramas titled “You Who Came from the Stars”? In this drama, there is a strong scene stealer named Lee Jae Kyung. He committed a heinous crime without feeling any guilt or remorse. However, we can infer something about his personality through his creepy behavior. Some people said he is a psychopath, but he is actually a sociopath. Then, what is a sociopath? Generally, a psychopath has become more common through some terrible events and news, while a sociopath is still unfamiliar. These disorders are both antisocial personality disorders, but they have certain distinguished differences. So to speak, a psychopath has an innately evil quality, they can not understand any emotions and they can
not distinguish what is right and what is wrong. They commit a crime to show their viciousness impulsively. In contrast, a sociopath acquires this evil quality; they understand emotions very well so that they control their feelings, but also they use others’ emotions. In addition to this, they already know that this action is a morally wrong action, but they still do it. That is why it is said that a sociopath is crueler than a psychopath. According to some studies, a sociopath is formed by their environment. They experienced maltreatment or neglect in their childhood, and eventually they get crooked, and they worry that they will be abandoned someday. To hide emotions such as anxiety and anger, as well as
Hwikyung Girls’ High School
their weakness, they commit a more immoral act. Pressure to be the best in every area also influences them to be a sociopath. However, because a sociopath acquires evil tendencies, we are able to prevent this acquisition. If they are taught ethics and loved by their parents enough, we can prevent the emergence of a sociopath. A peaceful and stable society full of conscience, love, and understanding is the main ingredient to prevent sociopaths. But today's society is as far as this ideal. It is full of doubt, untruth and deceit. People who are successful by using others with lying are respected, while people who live his or her live nice by keeping their conscience are damaged by them. If future’s society is same as today's society, maybe there will be more sociopath and we will meet more terrible society that we haven't met before. Gang Minseon (2-12)
The Safety Rules That You Should Follow on a Ship A terrible disaster occurred in South Korea: the sinking of the Sewol ferry. Almost 300 people died in this disaster and all nations fell into a deep sorrow. Many experts say that the lack of knowledge about safety rules in the ship made the disaster’s scale bigger. Based on this reason, let’s learn about the safety rules on a ship. In the first place, you should check for exits in the most common places where many people stay, such as guest rooms, bathrooms, restaurants, and the deck. Also, you should check where the life jackets and life boats are stored. When a ship starts to sink, you should push the emergency bell so that other people can notice the
danger. Wear the life jacket and escape to the deck. Then, go to the life boat. Take the life boat and propel the oars to go away from the ship as fast as you can. And you should not dive into the sea hastily. This is because you can sink into the sea, caught in a whirlpool. There are matters that require attention when you dive into the sea. First, wear a life jacket, but take off your shoes. Second, cover your chin with your hand to protect your tongue. Third, block your nose with your thumb and index finger. Lastly, twist your legs together and jump into the sea vertically.
When you float in the sea, hug someone else to prevent hypothermia. Your legs should be raised as much as you can raise them. This disaster gives us lots of lessons. Don’t forget this disaster and always be aware of dangerous situations. Pray for the repose of the deceased. Tip: Wearing a Life-jacket 1. Wear a life jacket with the strap out. 2. Tie the straps around your chest, waist, and neck strap in turn. 3. Pull the life-jacket right and left to check that it is secure on your body. Kim Minjung(3-3)
Global Citizens, Think and Act Globally Wars, conflicts, and hunger that devastate the world are prevalent now. I saw what a powerful influence those elements have, and decided to write an article about the seriousness of many worldwide problems. I want to show you the importance and appropriateness of being global citizens. Looking Around the World These days, the earth's temperature is rapidly rising. Because we emit lots of greenhouse gases, global warming is becoming more serious and cause ecological and social changes. The sea level is rising and the climate is changing abnormally. Also, social systems, such as food supply and health and water resources, are damaged by climate change. We need to take action right now. All around the world, wars are being caused, and justified by religion and racism. Violent conflicts during religious wars have frequently been conflated with ethnic issues - such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In terms of racism, these wars are specific violent acts or general hostilities between ethnic groups divided on the basis of race. For example, the Iraq war with U.S. occurred over seven years and, finally ending in 2011, can be said to be due to racial conflict. If everybody in the world could understand each other, then we can find peace on earth. It seems ironic that so much food is wasted.
Because of this, in fact, a large proportion of the world's population has experienced frequent severe hunger. While some people are eating lots of food, people in poor countries are starving and dying, and this is a serious problem. Also, there are many cases such as hunger that results from food supply disruptions caused by war or adverse weather caused by global warming. We must realize the seriousness of the problem and take steps to donate and save food. Being a Global Citizen If we look around the world and find that there are a lot of global issues and problems, we have to take 3 steps to be a global citizen. First, we must try hard to overcome any prejudice and open our minds toward others in the world. All of us have different appearances and we have our own way of speaking and thinking. But, unfortunately, many people still have racial, religious, and social prejudice. This is the main reason why conflicts and violence arise between countries and cultures. Thus, global citizens have to overcome these kinds of prejudice and have a broad mind. Second, each country has its own language and culture. We should not judge them from our point of view. Instead, global citizens should be respectful to those languages and cultures. We should have a
mind which is beyond the narrow vision of national interests and understand other cultures that seem unfamiliar for us. For this, multicultural education and learning through social media can help us to understand other cultures. Third, learning English can help us be global citizens. People all over the world use different languages. But there is one thing that helps for us to get over the language barrier. The answer is English, the most dominant and popular language. By using English, everyone on earth can communicate and partake in a unifying culture. Therefore, being multi-lingual can make us an absolute global citizen. Whereas there are still many conflicts between nations, the whole world is still interconnected. But I think if we recognize the current state of the entire world and try to make settlements about it by doing the three steps above, it can be possible for us to be best friends with all people around the world. I hope you, too, to try these three steps to be an awesome global citizen! Kim Miriam(3-7)

Miracles Will Occur, Distinctly! Have you ever heard of Anne Sullivan? You probably know her as Helen Keller’s teacher. In fact, she was a great educator who had Helen change herself from a disabled woman into a social worker. But still, many people who are familiar with Helen are not well aware of Anne. So, I’m going to explain not Helen, but Anne to you. There was an uncontrollable girl who was called “Anne” in shelter. She was so violent that no one could take care of her. Moreover, the shelter’s manager looked after her without a sense of love because he just wanted to get benefits from the government. Then one day Rora, a retired nurse, came to the shelter to seek a job. The manager refused her flatly at first, but finally he handed her the troublesome Anne. After meeting Anne, Rora wondered why Anne became violent and uncontrollable, and asked the reason to the manager. Found out from him that it was due to Anne's family’ s unexpected death and domestic violence, and she wanted to heal Anne's deep wound. Although Rora was very tired because of Anne who rejected her over and over, she never gave up on Anne. While taking care of her, Rora
discovered that Anne had trouble seeing. Most surprising to her was all the medical staffs' ignorance which contributed to Anne’s blindness. Rora felt extremely angry and took Anne over to her place to take care of Anne by herself. Anne eventually realized Rora's mind, so came to open her heart to Rora. However, happiness was just for the moment because Rora passed away. Anne experienced frustration again, but she tried to live better, keeping in mind Rora's will that "Miracles are everyone's right." As a result, Anne could graduate from Perkins school for the blind with honors. To return the love that she received from Rora to others, she became a teacher. It was then that she met Helen Keller, her lasting student. When I read Helen’s autobiography for the first time in my life, her teacher’s devotion really touched my heart. It was almost an amazing miracle and I bet Anne Sullivan was one of the best teachers in the world. Like this, I hope you also live the life that can be a miracle to someone. Miracles will occur to everybody, distinctly! Kwak Jiho(1-6)
World Movies Focus on Korea In 2012, “Gangnam Style,” sung by Psy, created the “Gangnam Style Syndrome” all over the world. The Korean drama, “Jewel in the Palace” (대장 금) hit Asia and Africa. When it was introduced in Iran, its ratings were about 90%. We call this phenomenon “Hallyu,” and it is spreading worldwide, which has made international film production companies pay attention to Korea. The thoughts about Korea that Americans had were not good in the past because of the Korean War; books distorted facts in history, and there was a lack of experts on Korean history. So, when Hollywood movies mentioned Asia, they showed landscapes of China, Japan, and also India, but Korea was not shown. However, thanks to “Hallyu,” many movie directors around the world are becoming interested in Korea. For example, we can see a Korean restaurant in the movie “Amazing Spiderman 2.” Moreover, the director of the movie, “Avengers” choose Korea as a next filming site for “Avengers 2.” Then why
do the world’s directors focus on Korea? We can explain this with three reasons. First, it is because of Korea’s system of government. They say that if international movie teams come to Korea for the purpose of filming, the Korean government returns 30% of cost of filming. Second, it is because of a power of “Hallyu.” If one movie does well at the Korean box office, then other Asian countries watch the movie, and it can be a successful movie. Last, it is because one of the images of Korea in the world is as an “IT Powerhouse” and some buildings look like buildings from Sci-fi movies so they often come to Korea. Hence, the world’s movie markets focus on Korea, and they put top priority on Korea when they make and promote movies. In conclusion, Korea’s influence in the world’s movie markets is growing wider, and Korea is also playing a pivotal role of the international film world. Lee Suji(2-9)
The Best Imaginative Writer, Bernard Werber Do you know who the most popular French writer is in Korea? He is Bernard Werber who is famous for writing very innovative and imaginative novels. He had been good at writing since his childhood, so he worked as a journalist publishing criticism about ants in the science journal named Le Nouvel Observateur. And he published the book named “Ant” in 1991. As soon as the book was published, it captivated readers from all over the world, and Bernard Werber joined the ranks of genius writers who attracted attention from France. Since then, he
has published many books like Papillon, God, The Mirror Of Cassandra, Paradise, Empire Of Angels, Smile and Tree. Most of his books became global best sellers. Cannes, What Do You Think of Korean Films? The Cannas Film Festival was held in Cannes, France from May 14 to May 25. With the Cannes Film Festival, one of the three global film festivals, (along with Venice and Berlin) successfully opening, I would like to know about the history of Korean Films at Cannes. Cannes Film Festival won international fame as a meeting place for world movies by balancing between artistic levels and commercial effects of movies. Also movie directors who are globally recognized actively participated and Cannes became an assembly place of the global film industry. So, if we view Korean films objectively based on the Cannes Film Festival, we may be able to develop our film industry with a broader perspective. In 1984, we went showed at Cannes with “Spinning The Tales Of Cruelty Towards Women”. Song ll Gone’s “Picnic” was awarded the festival's Jury Prize in 1999. Receiving the baton, Park Chan Wook achieved a splendid feat of winning the top award in 2004 for his internationally-acclaimed film, “Old Boy,” and he won the Jury Prize again for his film “Thirst” in 2009. The year that gained the highest honors was 2007 when Jeon Do Yeon of “Secret Sunshine” received the best actress award. She was the second asianactress winner of this part since Maggie Cheung had received the prize as an Asian actress throughout Cannes's history. Because a Korean actress had become a star of Cannes this was an emotional event. This year the film “DoHee Ya” starring Bae Doo Na premiered at Cannes’ “Un Certain Regard” and the film “The Target” was shown at a midnight screening. In addition, Jeon Do Yeon was asked to join the Festival as a jury judge. She made history again by becoming the first Korean actor to be a jury judge. Since 1984, Korean films have been developing gradually. Not simply in Cannes but In all aspects of industry, we are strengthening our position. Although from the global perspective it is only just beginning to take off, the Korean film industry is expected to grow as much as the growth so far. Just like the saying that goes “Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be”. And there are film directors, actors and staff who are making efforts to create great work. There is a rumor that winning movies of authoritative film festivals fail at the box office. However, these days there are many movies that are satisfying people in both entertainment and quality. To hit the box office, people's attention is surely needed. If we pay attention to our films, won't our films develop more and more in future? Choi Suji(3-10) effects of a corrupted social system. The lessons in his novels make people think again about people, social systems and nature. Also, his novels always characterize scientific imagination and scientific intelligence. Today, most of us are accustomed to staring at the monitor of a computer or smart phone. It causes a decrease in the number of people who enjoy reading books and exploring imagination. Sometimes, we need to read some imaginative books and explore imagination. Why don't we imagine like Bernard Werber? Reading his books, you can imagine like Bernard Werber. Baek Minji(1-12)

How Many Things Do You Know About Vegetarianism? People believe that vegetarians do not eat meat at all, but it's not an absolute case. They have many kinds of vegetarian diets which are more diverse and eco-friendly than we think. Do you wonder what eco-friendly and healthy vegetarian food is? A vegetarian diet is divided into several types but one of the best-known vegetarian diets is simply eating vegetables. This type is called “veganism”. Vegans eat fruits, nuts, grains and vegetables but don't eat anything that comes from animals. There are a lot of people who think living only on vegetables is very difficult but not all vegetarians are the same. There are also other vegetarians that eat some meats. For example, “pollo vegetarians” or “pesco vegetarians” are allowed to eat poultry or fish, respectively. Also, there are “flexitarians” who are usually vegans but they situationally eat meats. It is even possible to consume enough nutrients by being a vegetarian. Some people might think a vegan's diet is deficient in protein. But vegetarians may eat tofu, nuts, seeds, lentils, and soy foods
to adequately meet daily protein intake. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the recommended daily intake of protein is about from 0.8 to 1 gram. If you consume soy products such as tofu and soybean oil, you are getting the protein your body needs. Likewise, vegetarians have a higher intake of protein from vegetable protein and not from animal protein. Most of people who live in a Non-disease Longevity Village in the world have vegetarian meals. In contrast, non-vegetarians take in dioxin that is stored in animal fats. The proportion of the dioxin they take in is twentyfold the legal maximum. Vegetarians often eat fewer calories and fats than those who eat meat, and usually have lower blood cholesterol levels. Also the level of their cholesterol and saturated fat is low. Furthermore, adult diseases such as high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia are rare for them. Thus, a vegetarian diet helps treat and prevent various diseases. Additionally, vegetarians contribute to the protection of our environment with their
vegetarian diet. A vegetarian diet is eco-friendly. One of the reasons is that vegetarianism can be a solution for 80% of global warming. A diet high in meat consumption has a harmful effect on the environment compared to a vegetarian diet. Why is a carnivorous diet so bad for our environment? First, we keep domestic animals for our meat diet. According to the UN Food Organization, 30 percent of the land not covered by glaciers throughout the world is used for meat production. Also, raising live stock is the main problem of global warming. It ranks first in releasing greenhouse gases. Second, through the course of making livestock feed, much oil is being consumed. Cattle also release their bodily gases which contribute to global warming. Do you think all of us should be a vegetarian then? No, that’s impossible. But if we reduce our consumption of meats by one meal a day, several times of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas can be diminished. I hope that you will consider a vegetarian diet again after reading this article. Son Areum(1-9)
Coffee and Health: Medicine or Toxin? How many cups of coffee do you drink in a day? On the way to work, after lunch, and during the night shift, we drink coffee. To give ourselves a little more time and change of air, we go down to the café and hang out there. Today, coffee has been so popularized that we can see café all over the streets. But, we must know whether coffee is good for our health, or not! Research suggests that coffee has both beneficial and detrimental effects. And the truth, it’s okay as long as you drink coffee in moderation, like medicine. First, you have to change your view that coffee must be harmful to your body. The recent America Medical Association survey revealed that the more you drink coffee, the less your risk of diabetes. If a man or woman drinks a cup of coffee a day, they
can reduce their risk of diabetes to 29% and 27%, respectively. But, it is difficult to say for certain what it is about coffee’s components that decreases the risk of diabetes. Moreover, coffee also prevents colon cancer and the aging of the skin. Avoid Drinking Coffee Excessively. We have all heard about the harmful effects of coffee: coffee is said to cause obesity and be addictive. When you are bored, you drink too much coffee out of habit. Some people say drink coffee like a fish but are never deprived of their sleep, but others say a simple gulp of coffee and they suffer heart palpitations. This effect is similar to using amphetamines. Why are there different effects? It is because each person has a different sensitivity to caffeine. So for people who are sensitive to caffeine, it is not advisable to have over 300mg of caffeine a day. And people who have insomnia or heart diseases should avoid

drinking coffee. In addition, if you drink coffee on an empty stomach, it can cause esophagitis. Coffee drinks are also high in calorie, if you add some whipped cream and chocolate chips. You can consume more than 720~810 kcal calories with one drink, the same as one meal. You must choose an americano instead of a caramel macchiato, if you are considerate of your health. Coffee may give you a much needed boost, but more than one large cup of coffee a day isn’ t good for you. With respect to health, brew coffee directly yourself rather than buying it in a café. And if you want to drink coffee in a café, eliminating sugar, whipped cream, chocolate chips from your coffee, such as an americano or espresso, can also lead to a healthier lifestyle. The saying “A dose of caffeine makes people less tired and more alert” is but a fleeting effect. Over time your condition will become more tired and lee alert than before. Jeon Daseul(3-11)
A. T here are two types of skill for studying English: productive skill and receptive skill. In productive skill, there are writing and speaking skills. And in receptive skill, there are listening and reading skills. It had said by literacy researcher, Cresen: “If we improve the reading skill, the other skills also can be improved". 4. Ms. Baek(Dabin) Q. The importance of English A. In this global era, English is not a choice but an essential. We use English in almost every area and English is very useful so we study English. Q. Study Method of English A. For reading, it’s important to increase sense of time. I try not to rely on answer sheets. I also try to grasp the structure of the text at large. To do so, I find the key words in each sentence and summarize the text. If you want to be good at vocabulary, choose a vocabulary list and memorize. But when you really can't memorize a word, then find some example sentences. Also, memorizing with pronunciation is important. Q. Books recommended A. I think solving a lot of questions from mock tests is good and, in addition, EBS textbooks are the best among all textbooks I think. Their questions are the most similar with the ones on the college entrance examination.
