Notes on
GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES By Tom Hatten
Lorelei Lee, the fabled heroine of this evening’s entertainment turns 90 this year; she first appeared in 1925 in Harper’s Bazaar and then a very popular novel which her creator, Anita Loos, adapted as a comedy for Broadway the following year. Two decades later in 1949, with Joseph Fields as her collaborator on libretto and Jule Styne and Leo Robin providing a rousing score, Lorelei—and Miss Carol Channing—knocked Shubert Alley on its ear. (And that indefatigable and always welcome lady has been continuing to do just that in venues large and small ever since, often doing songs from the score, including a tune to do with best friends and diamonds.) Yes, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes has had many years of much-deserved success, beautifully spoofing the roaring twenties without being mean or tawdry in the telling. To be sure, its basic plot has familiar flourishes; rich aging father (in this case, the Button King) sure that a floozie (in this case Lorelei) is out to snare his rich son; undelivered or misdirected wireless messages (remember telegrams?) particularly when the entire cast is on an ocean liner somewhere; and Paris (France) depicted as a den of iniquity; they’re all here, practically non-stop. Not to forget a more down-to-earth girl chum for our leading lady (in this case Dorothy—a brunette of course) who gets a couple of neat songs and lots of the better wisecracks. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was a lavish early Cinemascope effort from 20th Century Fox in 1953, and perhaps, for some, “effort” describes it best. Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell were swell but there was not even an attempt made to keep up the plot in the 20s. However in 1994 a return to the 20s miraculously occurred in Lorelei: Gentlemen Still Prefer Blondes which toured the country for a year before beginning a 320-performance run on Broadway, again with Miss Channing, but this time in a dual role; young Lorelei mostly being remembered by a more mature (and bejeweled) one. So, 90 years have been very good to Lorelei Lee, and of course, to Miss Loos, who died in 1981 at age 88. The lady wrote no fewer than three successful autobiographies: “This Brunette Prefers Work” (1956), “Kiss Hollywood Goodbye” (1974), and between the two, in 1956, a wry and funny reminder of her most famous character. Its title: “A Girl Like I.”

New Roads School is a diverse and cohesive educational community, reflective of the kaleidoscope of cultures, ethnicities, beliefs, and orientations that make our larger Los Angeles community so vibrant. We believe that a meaningful 21st century education must include a diverse cohort as well as integration with the larger community in order to prepare students for conscientious participatory lives and not merely to ready them for college.

A MUSICAL IN 25 HOURS? We are all here in this theatre for the same reason. We love musicals – and a chance for you to see, and for us to perform in a musical that’s hardly ever done – well, that’s a special treat for all of us. The Musical Theatre Guild was founded over fifteen years ago by a dedicated group of professional musical artists who were interested in exploring and preserving works from the musical theatre repertoire that were either forgotten, neglected or unfairly dismissed. Working under a special Actors’ Equity Concert Staged Reading code, this concert format requires us to focus on the script and the score, eliminate unnecessary production values, and for our busy actor members, streamline the majority of the rehearsal process into one focused long weekend. The cast meets once or twice prior to the weekend for basic musical rehearsal. On Thursday and Friday all staging takes place with a complete run through scheduled for Saturday. On Sunday afternoon we enter the theatre and add the technical elements and orchestra and, voila – it’s opening night! Our actors have compared the experience with being shot out of a cannon. Not that any of us have actually ever done that feat – but you get the idea. This format enables us to take the risk to present works that other theatres would not dream to schedule, and feature some of the finest talent in Southern California on our stage. So sit back and enjoy as we experience this rare musical TOGETHER.
