Notes on
A CLASS ACT By Tom Hatten
A Class Act opened off-Broadway in November of 2000 and transferred to Broadway the following spring where it played 30 previews and 105 regular performances at the Ambassador Theatre. The genesis of the show is most unusual—it purports to tell the life story of its composer Edward Kleban who died in 1987 at age 48. Mr. Kleban had only one Broadway credit but it made him a millionaire overnight. The show, of course, was A Chorus Line. Yes, incredibly, the man whose one Broadway musical won the Pulitzer Prize, several Tonys, and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards never had another hit; indeed, never had another show that even managed to open, on Broadway or off. Obviously, there must be a reason—possibly several reasons—why. (His co-creators of A Chorus Line, Marvin Hamlisch and Michael Bennett, need I remind you, each had several.) Certainly, we have all heard the time-worn descriptive phrase “He (or she) is somebody who just couldn’t handle success.” That, I submit is as valid a reason as any in describing Ed Kleban and A Chorus Line. Linda Kline, billed elsewhere here as co-writer of the book of tonight’s show, wrote her notes for the show’s original cast album that his trunk songs that never saw the lights of Broadway success included adaptations of Scaramouche, Merton of the Movies, A Thousand Clowns, The Americanization of Emily, and The Heartbreak Kid, many, surely, inspired by Lehman Engel and his much-admired BMI Musical Theatre Workshop. (Mr. Engel you will note is one of the characters with whom Mr. Kleban interacts in tonight’s show. As are Mr. Hamlisch. And Mr. Bennett.) Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, in describing A Class Act uses an adjective I cannot remember ever seeing before—”quasi-autobiographical.” (21 letters: look for it as an answer (question) on Jeopardy one of these nights soon.) I think it’s apt and useful here because every scrap of music we’ll hear tonight is his. The show opens at the Celebration of Life for Edward Kleban being held at the Shubert Theatre in 1988. With the late honoree himself on hand. For a two-act personal appearance. At his own memorial.

A MUSICAL IN 25 HOURS? We are all here in this theatre for the same reason. We love musicals – and a chance for you to see, and for us to perform in a musical that’s hardly ever done – well, that’s a special treat for all of us. The Musical Theatre Guild was founded twenty years ago by a dedicated group of professional musical artists who were interested in exploring and preserving works from the musical theatre repertoire that were either forgotten, neglected or unfairly dismissed. Working under a special Actors’ Equity Concert Staged Reading code, this concert format requires us to focus on the script and the score, eliminate unnecessary production values, and for our busy actor members, streamline the majority of the rehearsal process into one focused long weekend. The cast meets once or twice prior to the weekend for basic musical rehearsal. On Thursday and Friday all staging takes place with a complete run through scheduled for Saturday. On Sunday afternoon we enter the theatre and add the technical elements and orchestra and, voila – it’s opening night! Our actors have compared the experience with being shot out of a cannon. Not that any of us have actually ever done that feat – but you get the idea. This format enables us to take the risk to present works that other theatres would not dream to schedule, and feature some of the finest talent in Southern California on our stage. So sit back and enjoy as we experience this rare musical TOGETHER.
