Notes on
TRIUMPH OF LOVE By Tom Hatten
Triumph of Love is based on a 1732 Commedia dell’arte play Le Triomphe de Amour by Pierre de Marivaux, but fear not: His three acts, condensed to two, have been translated into English, and very wittily so, by James Magruder. Mr. Magruder, a dramaturg at Yale, was initially drawn to what he describes as M. Marivaux’s “marvelous and rather painful comedy” by its heroine, the “brainy, ruthless Princess Léonide” who, as we will see this evening, assumes a number of different guises, of both sexes. The above quotes, and most others you will read here tonight are from the show’s original cast album; an interview in Playbill; and reviews of Triumph of Love after its opening in October 23, 1997. It ran for 85 performances at the Royale Theatre, but it was off-Broadway three years earlier at the Classic Stage Company that Mr. Magruder and director Michael Mayer first put the show on its feet—but as a well-received straight play—no music. Mr. Magruder again, in Playbill: “In one particularly delightful interlude Michael had the servants singing Cole Porter’s “What is This Thing Called Love?” as their masters careened around the garden with their brand-new emotions. Marivaux and Tin Pan Alley? Hmmm!” Well, why not? And so, with composer Jeffrey Stock and lyricist Susan Birkenhead equally enthusiastic and now on board they all got to work in January 1995. It was decided that the tone of their new musical would be “allowed to travel stylistically from ancient Sparta to rococo France to contemporary America, and back again, whatever the moment demanded.
Well, be prepared for such a ride tonight, because that’s exactly how Triumph of Love turns out.
And one final quote, this from Mr. Magruder in Playbill, shortly before the show’s 1997 opening: “We’ve discovered after 10 previews it’s still a little confusing to unload all that exposition…” I’m so glad Mr. Magruder said it first: first-act exposition of unfamiliar material is often the dramatist’s toughest nut to crack—just how much to reveal and how much to hold back. But at our evening’s end, I think you’ll agree that Mr. Magruder and company have made theirs work. And you may quote me.

New Roads School is a diverse and cohesive educational community, reflective of the kaleidoscope of cultures, ethnicities, beliefs, and orientations that make our larger Los Angeles community so vibrant. We believe that a meaningful 21st century education must include a diverse cohort as well as integration with the larger community in order to prepare students for conscientious participatory lives and not merely to ready them for college.

A MUSICAL IN 25 HOURS? We are all here in this theatre for the same reason. We love musicals – and a chance for you to see, and for us to perform in a musical that’s hardly ever done – well, that’s a special treat for all of us. The Musical Theatre Guild was founded over fifteen years ago by a dedicated group of professional musical artists who were interested in exploring and preserving works from the musical theatre repertoire that were either forgotten, neglected or unfairly dismissed. Working under a special Actors’ Equity Concert Staged Reading code, this concert format requires us to focus on the script and the score, eliminate unnecessary production values, and for our busy actor members, streamline the majority of the rehearsal process into one focused long weekend. The cast meets once or twice prior to the weekend for basic musical rehearsal. On Thursday and Friday all staging takes place with a complete run through scheduled for Saturday. On Sunday afternoon we enter the theatre and add the technical elements and orchestra and, voila – it’s opening night! Our actors have compared the experience with being shot out of a cannon. Not that any of us have actually ever done that feat – but you get the idea. This format enables us to take the risk to present works that other theatres would not dream to schedule, and feature some of the finest talent in Southern California on our stage. So sit back and enjoy as we experience this rare musical TOGETHER.
