Notes on
SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS By Tom Hatten
Had there never lived, in the first half of the last century, a hugely successful New York gossip columnist named Walter Winchell, it is very unlikely there would have ever been a Broadway musical called Sweet Smell of Success because the show had as its pivotal character (and starring role) one J.J. Hunsecker; and J.J. was a dead ringer for Mr. Winchell. Dead, literally, because Winchell had died in 1972 and Sweet Smell of Success opened at the Martin Beck Theatre some 30 years later. Many of tonight’s audience will know that the musical’s book by John Guare follows closely that of the 1957 movie, an original by Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman. Wow. Three literary lights of the period, surely. And the score was by A Chorus Line’s Marvin Hamlisch. And popular and talented John Lithgow was J.J., in a Tony-winning performance for best actor in a musical for the 2002-2003 season. So, was it a major hit, with a long run and innumerable productions elsewhere? Well, no. And the principal reason for its failure at the box office seems to be... timing. By 2002, the world of Walter Winchell, one in which a somewhat less-than-scrupulous New York gossip columnist could literally make or break a career had changed greatly... the paparazzi phenomenon and repeated mentions and jokes by late-night comedians had largely taken its place. And Winchell himself had wound up his long career as the off camera narrator of The Untouchables for Desilu. Sweet Smell of Success began as a workshop production in Toronto in August 1998 and had a reading in New York (with Jonathon Pryce as J.J.) that November. Three years later in January 2002 was its out-of-town tryout in Chicago. John Lithgow was now J.J. Hunsecker with Brian D’Arcy James co-starring in the show’s other major role of Sidney Falco. Both men opened to mostly upbeat personal notices on March 19 for a run of 109 performances and 18 previews. (Nicholas Hytner was the show’s director, beginning with the Canadian workshop.) The New York reviews were decidedly mixed and it must have been of small consolation knowing that the original film had also failed to find an audience back in 1957—and this despite Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis as J.J. and Sidney and a great many genuine 4-star reviews across the country. (It took about 40 years and a lot of DVDs to make it a cult classic.) So I have to go back to my original theory: Sweet Smell of Success: Good show, bad timing. Luckily for us however, whatever our age, we can all enjoy the nasty charm of tonight’s show, set in the 1950s, without needing to tie it into anybody living or dead. Sure, some of us will remember the man with the frantic telegraph clicker on Sunday nights barking out, “Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. North and South America and all the ships at sea. Let’s go to press!!!” Or, if the name Winchell merely conjures up for you a very tasty donut? Well, hey—why not pick up a dozen on the way home?
