Notes on

THE PAJAMA GAME By Tom Hatten

The Pajama Game, based on the novel “7 1/2 Cents” by Richard Bissell, has had two major Broadway revivals since opening for business at the St. James Theatre in May of 1954, and it has since been performed in venues large and small hundreds of times for the simplest of reasons: it’s an old-fashioned slam-bang show that wears its 62-year-old history proudly on its still-untattered Pajama sleeve. As you will see and hear this evening. Although the original production, which ran for 1063 performances, boasted as its co-directors two legit musical legends, George Abbott and Jerome Robbins, most of its creators had limited or no Broadway experience and its immediate success with critics and audiences took everybody quite by surprise. Producers Robert E Griffith, Harold Prince, and Frederick Brisson had never before produced a Broadway show; the script was co-librettist Mr. Bissell’s first; the songwriting team of Richard Adler and Jerry Ross provided their first ever score for a book show; and Bob Fosse made his choreographic debut with The Pajama Game. And to my mind, some major credit for the show’s success should be accorded to whoever in that group hired the splendid original cast. I confess to never having been lucky enough to see them in 1954, so I base that thought on a great show album: John Raitt, surely the greatest male voice in modern Broadway history as Sid; peppery and always welcome Janis Paige, fresh from seven years at Warner Brothers (where she was never used nearly enough to suit me); a genuine name from out of Broadway’s comedy past, Eddie Foy as Hinesy; the superb Carol Haney, who would win a best featured actress Tony as Gladys; and all down the line. Other Tonys for the show: Best Musical and Bob Fosse for his choreography. And not to be overlooked as a great plus for the show: from its splendid score, “Hey There” became a huge best-selling single for both Rosemary Clooney and Sammy Davis Jr.—separately, but singing to themselves, of course, as Mr. Raitt had done when he introduced it on stage singing to his tape recorder. Over the years, The Pajama Game has become widely known as the show that made one of its gypsies (dancers) famous overnight, and though it has surely reached your ears by this time, I would be remiss not to tell it here: in the star-making role of Gladys, Carol Haney was surely headed for greater renown, but alas she was out of the show with an ankle injury for several nights, one of which found one of Paramount’s head honchos, producer Hal Wallis, sixth row center. He very much liked what he saw—understudy Shirley MacLaine.

A MUSICAL IN 25 HOURS? We are all here in this theatre for the same reason. We love musicals – and a chance for you to see, and for us to perform in a musical that’s hardly ever done – well, that’s a special treat for all of us. The Musical Theatre Guild was founded twenty years ago by a dedicated group of professional musical artists who were interested in exploring and preserving works from the musical theatre repertoire that were either forgotten, neglected or unfairly dismissed. Working under a special Actors’ Equity Concert Staged Reading code, this concert format requires us to focus on the script and the score, eliminate unnecessary production values, and for our busy actor members, streamline the majority of the rehearsal process into one focused long weekend. The cast meets once or twice prior to the weekend for basic musical rehearsal. On Thursday and Friday all staging takes place with a complete run through scheduled for Saturday. On Sunday afternoon we enter the theatre and add the technical elements and orchestra and, voila – it’s opening night! Our actors have compared the experience with being shot out of a cannon. Not that any of us have actually ever done that feat – but you get the idea. This format enables us to take the risk to present works that other theatres would not dream to schedule, and feature some of the finest talent in Southern California on our stage. So sit back and enjoy as we experience this rare musical TOGETHER.
