National Festival BIRMINGHAm 2-7 july 2012 The National Festival is a six day celebration of music, bringing 12,000 young musicians from across the UK to Birmingham to perform in some of its top venues. THERE ARE PERFORMANCES OF JAZZ, ORCHESTRAL, ROCK, FOLK, WORLD, WIND, BRASS, POP, CHORAL AND CHAMBER MUSIC THROUGHOUT THE WEEK. PLUS INSPIRATIONAL WORKSHOPS, MASSED EVENTS AND NEW COMMISSIONS! Their role is to listen to each performance and provide focused, constructive feedback that will help each group continue their musical journey. MONDAY 2 JULY 2012 INFANT & JUNIOR GROUPS The National Festival kicks off with performances from some of the UK’s most engaging infant and junior groups in Symphony Hall and Birmingham Conservatoire’s Adrian Boult Hall. SESSION TIMES 10:30-13:00 14:30-17:00 17:15-19:30

TUESDAY 3 JULY 2012 ENSEMBLES, JUNIOR & SENIOR CHOIRS If choral singing is your thing, this is the day for you! Town Hall, Symphony Hall and Birmingham Conservatoire’s Adrian Boult Hall will host some of the UK’s finest young voices, singing repertoire from the entire choral spectrum. You’ll hear everything from Rutter to Whitacre to Glee! In Birmingham Conservatoire’s Recital Hall be entertained by an eclectic mix of music ranging from percussion to brass to ukulele ensembles and much more. SESSION TIMES 10:30-13:00 14:30-17:00 17:15-20:00

WEDNESDAY 4 JULY 2012 ENSEMBLES, SCHOOL ORCHESTRAS, STRING & CHAMBER ORCHESTRAS Be entertained by an eclectic mix of music ranging from percussion to brass to ukulele ensembles and much more in Birmingham Conservatoire’s Adrian Boult Hall and Recital Hall. In Symphony Hall the day starts with contemporary and traditional repertoire from school orchestras followed by stunning performances from young string and chamber orchestras. Thursday 5 JULY 2012 AMPLIFIED (ROCK, POP & URBAN), CHAMBER MUSIC, TRADITIONAL & INTERNATIONAL MUSIC, WIND BANDS Birmingham Conservatoire presents folk, roots and traditional music from across the globe in the Adrian Boult Hall, while the Recital Hall hosts some exquisite chamber music groups. In Symphony Hall wind bands from across the country will display flawless ensemble playing and some of the UK’s best up-and-coming young bands will play HMV Institute as part of Amplified. FRIDAY 6 JULY 2012 AMPLIFIED (Rock, Pop & Urban), BRASS BANDS, SCHOOL JAZZ Witness the technical virtuosity of the UK’s finest young brass bands in Town Hall, relax with some school jazz in Birmingham Conservatoire’s Adrian Boult Hall or see the best of the UK’s up-and-coming young bands at HMV Institute as part of Amplified. Saturday 7 JULY 2012 JAZZ & YOUTH ORCHESTRAS Be amazed by outstanding performances from some of the UK’s top youth orchestras performing traditional and contemporary repertoire in Town Hall and Symphony Hall. In Birmingham Conservatoire, young jazz bands will showcase diverse and innovative performances of jazz standards and original material. SESSION TIMES 10:15-13:00 14:30-18:30 IKON FAMILY DAY Join MFY and Ikon Gallery for a fun art and music workshop designed for families. This is a free drop in session open to all, taking place at Ikon Gallery, 13:00-16:00. Please note children should be accompanied by an adult at all times.

about MUSIC FOR YOUTH Founded in 1970, Music for Youth is a national music education charity providing free performance and audience opportunities for young people aged 21 and under through an annual season of nationwide festivals and concerts.

MFY is a festival series, not a competition. It offers young people the opportunity to perform live in a supportive and non-competitive environment and more than 2.5 million young people have taken part in MFY events over the years.

THE MFY SEASON The season is designed to inspire, nurture and support musicians at every level of experience. Festivals take place in a variety of venues in over 50 locations across the UK.
