MUSIC FOR YOUTH

WELCOME IT GIVES ME GREAT PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE THIS YEAR’S SHOWCASE OF YOUNG TALENT IN OUR THREE ANNUAL PROM CONCERTS. AS EVER, THE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE SUPPORTED BY DEDICATED TEACHERS AND DIRECTORS WITHOUT WHOM THIS SERIES OF CONCERTS WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE.

T

he Music for Youth Proms bring together large and small scale projects and performing groups we have encountered throughout the year and I am delighted that 2016 has produced a healthy crop of new music, written and performed by young people. This year, there were more student compositions in our annual festival season than ever before, and our call for new works for our New Music Stage has produced exciting new repertoire for traditional big bands, orchestras and chamber choirs as well as original music by accomplished singer/songwriters and smaller scale ensembles and bands. You will hear these new works threaded through each concert alongside a rich cultural mix of music from across the world, contemporary and traditional. In keeping with this year ’s celebration of new music, all three of the Massed Ensemble

performances present new works, two of which were especially commissioned for the Proms. It is therefore fitting that each concert will conclude with a specially commissioned finale which brings together all 1,000 performers each night. We are grateful to presenter, composer and jazz musician Pete Letanka for writing Hope and Glory , which captures the energy and enthusiasm of all of the young musicians taking part, and indeed all those thousands of others who we have been privileged to work with over the last year.

JUDITH WEBSTER CHIEF EXECUTIVE, MUSIC FOR YOUTH

A YEAR IN THE LIFE

Tonight at the Music for Youth Proms, you’ll be entertained by some of the UK's very best young musicians. Drawn from the events we produce across the year to present a stellar evening of performances, these young musicians represent the varied and dynamic work of the sector.

E

ach night of the Proms we commission a Massed Ensemble, some 500 strong collaborations that bring together young musicians from different backgrounds, those beginning their musical journey alongside accomplished musicians, inspiring them to fulfil their musical potential. Providing performance opportunities is at the heart of what we do. MFY Invites gave young people the chance to perform in lunchtime concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and at private functions for our sponsors. In 2016, 50 Regional Festivals between January and March brought together 40,000 young musicians from Cornwall to Gateshead, to perform (and listen to) music of all styles, from rock bands, orchestras, Tamil drummers and choirs - a feast of music making. Truly inspiring. In July, Music for Youth took over the City of Birmingham for the five day National Festival. 10,000 young musicians were able to showcase their musical talent on world class stages, including Symphony Hall and Birmingham Town Hall.

With access to professional musicians, workshops, a festival tent and free fringe stages across the City, a further 2,000 young musicians took part in the Festival Fringe. Exchange in Scotland provided young Scottish musicians with great performance platforms, panel discussions with music professionals, artist led workshops, and a marketplace where young people could find out about further opportunities in their area. Music for Youth’s programme for emerging young artists, Frequencies events, took place in Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol and London in 2016 and resulted in 86% of the young artists taking part saying it had given them a better understanding of how to get into the music industry. Every year we produce eight Primary Proms; fabulous concerts that aim to inspire a new generation of young people to take up music and develop their musical potential. PETE LETANKA PRESENTER Music for Youth is thrilled to welcome Pete Letanka to the MFY Proms as tonight’s presenter and composer of this evening’s special finale.

P

ete Letanka is a professional jazz pianist , composer and educator. He is signed to the award winning record label, Zephyr Records, who released his album Afrostrocracy to great acclaim. Letanka has enjoyed performing at Ronnie Scott's, Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Purcell Room.

His work as a composer includes a musical produced by Roger Lloyd Pack , commissions for Glyndebourne Youth Opera and the Warner Bros. documentary Stanley Kubrick: a life in pictures. His work in education involves collaborations with Jazz at Lincoln Centre (New York), Royal Opera House, Casa da Musica (Portugal) and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked in schools and prisons across the UK, inspiring vulnerable young people to find new confidence through composition and improvisation. Letanka has led international cross-arts projects in South Africa, India, Lebanon, Spain and Portugal. He spent five years as the Music Director of Glyndebourne Youth Opera and three years as the Artistic Director of Aldeburgh Music’s Group A.

PETE LETANKA INTRODUCES HIS FINALE COMMISSION, HOPE AND GLORY " It is a huge honour and privilege to be invited to host the Music for Youth Proms once more. Each year the

When I asked them how to update the lyrics so that they would speak more clearly to people of their generation, they said that they were more interested in looking forward than looking back. One teenage girl said, ‘that song was written with an operating system from 1902. We need a software update!’ They came up with the idea of a vision that could be shared with the world. Not a system of rule, but a system of equality, fairness and dignity. Not standing on another person to get to the top, but standing side by side to get further. This reimagining of Elgar’s Land of Hope and Glory is entitled Hope and Glory, with words inspired by 500 young people from across the UK

"

standard of musicianship astounds me and leaves me questioning, ‘what is this unique quality that youth brings to the interpretation, creation and performance of music?’ What I admire so deeply about the MFY Proms is the spotlight it throws on music being performed while there is still a youthful fire in the belly, before ‘growing up’. I wonder if there is a unique quality that youth brings that can’t be brought once youth has gone? Music for Youth approached me with a commission. A challenge to reimagine Elgar's Land of Hope and Glory for a new generation. Land of Hope and Glory was written in 1902 and is contemporaneous with the publication of the imperialist, businessman and politician Cecil Rhodes' will, which bequeathed his considerable wealth for the specific purpose of promoting ‘the extension of British rule throughout the world.

The lyrics of Land of Hope and Glory echo the spirit of the time with lines such as: Wider Still And Wider, Shall Thy Bounds Be Set; God, Who Made Thee Mighty, Make Thee Mightier Yet! Over three months I asked around 500 young people from across the UK what they felt about the song. Nearly all of them said they, ‘loved the tune, but weren't too sure about the words.’ When I asked them why, I was given a wide range of answers: ‘I like to be in control of my life and I don't like other people trying to control me. It feels weird singing a song about wanting to control other people.’ ‘I wouldn't want to go around the world telling people how to live.’

HOPE AND GLORY Commissioned by Music for Youth

We will sing you a story of a dream we can become. A land of hope and glory, standing shoulder to shoulder as one. Wider still and wider shall our song be sung. A vision from the young: unified, side-by-side, dignified -We are one. Now's the day, you'll see, full of hope and glory. You? Me? We. Now there'll be a day and you will see, We're a land so full of hope and glory. They can't divide you and me.

LAND OF HOPE AND GLORY

From Pomp & Circumstance – March No.1 (Performed only at the Wednesday MFY Proms) Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free, How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee? Wider still, and wider, shall thy bounds be set; God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet! Truth and Right and Freedom, each a holy gem, Stars of solemn brightness, weave thy diadem. Tho’thy way be darkened, still in splendor drest, As the star that trembles o’er the liquid West.

Now we can be full of hope and glory. You, me, we can see that.

MASSED ENSEMBLES AT THE MFY PROMS

T

he Music for Youth Proms showcase the highest quality performances from our annual season and feature some of the UK’s most creative, innovative and energetic young musicians and teachers. At each evening of the Proms, approximately 1,000 talented young people perform; half of them have been invited because they impressed our professional Music Mentors at the MFY National Festival in Birmingham and other events earlier in the year, the other half perform as part of a breath-taking Massed Ensemble performance. A different Massed Ensemble performs at each of the three concerts. Each Massed Ensemble represents a different region of the country, offering a larger group of young people an opportunity to take part in a professional, large scale project, presenting their locally produced work on a national stage. By supporting these substantial performance projects, Music for Youth aims to encourage innovation, inclusion, ambition and good practice.

MONDAY 14 NOVEMBER A SHAKESPEAREAN TRIPTYCH COMPOSER AND CONDUCTOR Philip Harper

Would you like your work to be considered for a Massed Ensemble performance at the Music for Youth Proms? If you are interested in submitting a proposal, please email mfy@mfy.org.uk for more details.

W

illiam Shakespeare is one of the world’s most celebrated playwrights and 2016 marks 400 years since his death. It seems only fitting to pay tribute to his work at this year’s Music for Youth Proms.

In January, the Massed Ensemble partners ran a competition inviting young composers to write a short melody inspired by characters from Shakespeare’s plays. Composer Philip Harper selected submissions by Duncan McCormick (Downend Schools), Tallis Inger (Writhlington School) and Nathaniel Humphreys (Churchdown Schools), drawing on Romeo and Juliet, King Lear and Macbeth respectively, to feature in a special commission for this evening. Harper completed the commission in early September and the 500 young musicians and singers you see tonight set about the task of learning A Shakespearean Triptych . The Massed Ensemble is a collaboration between Bath & North East Somerset Music Hub, South Gloucestershire Music Hub and Gloucestershire Music, and features a wind band of more than 150 young instrumentalists and a choir of 350 singers. This evening is a world premiere of A Shakespearean Triptych.

I was delighted to be asked to compose and "conduct at the Music for Youth Proms again this

year; this time with an even more collaboratively minded project involving hundreds of young people from across three regions. I was also very pleased to be able to contribute creatively to the 400th Anniversary celebrations of William Shakespeare's birth in 2016 and this piece uses more than a few famous quotations from the great Bard.

Proms is, in itself, a life changing experience. Its place in our culture and history is valued across all generations. To be able to perform a world premiere, conducted by the composer that celebrates the life and work of Shakespeare, is an honour. We hope you enjoy our celebration of the Bard's life and work .

T

S

onight’s Massed Ensemble performance involves approximately 600 young people singing Howard Goodall’s The Pearl , supported by instrumentalists from the Bromley Youth Chamber Orchestra and dancers from the Coloma Dance Academy. The choir consists of young singers from Coloma Convent Girls' School, The Quest Academy-Coloma Trust , Royal Russell School, St. Elphege's and Regina Coeli Primary Schools in Croydon, South London. The young performers come from South London and the surrounding area.

The Pearl was written by Howard Goodall to celebrate the 140th anniversary of Coloma Convent Girls' School and was first performed in the Royal Festival Hall in 2010 with the composer present. The words are based on a 17th century poem by George Herbert. While the language is quite complex, essentially, the poet is saying that a person can only enjoy the benefits, rewards and enrichments of learning, human relationships, pleasure and the arts if they see them as a path to God. The evocative words lend themselves to an imaginative approach to performance. The Massed Ensemble therefore takes an existing piece and performs it in an original way so that it is visually and aurally exciting through the involvement of materials and dancers as well as instrumentalists and singers and the Coloma British Sign Language Club.

WITH THANKS TO The head teachers, principals and participating staff, especially music staff, for their dedication, commitment and enthusiasm in teaching and supporting the singers, instrumentalists and dancers involved.

tudents from Gwent and Caerphilly Music Services join forces to form a Massed Ensemble of 650 young musicians for this evening’s vibrant performance of the new commission, #CONNECT . The collaboration includes a jazz orchestra, string and percussion ensemble, beatboxers and a massed choir.

The composer of #CONNECT , Daniel Bickerton, an ex-Gwent music student, is currently a lecturer at Cardiff University School of Music and worked with Timothy Johnston on orchestration and studio production for the piece. The performance reflects on nostalgic and contemporary issues relating to technological evolution and uses the spirit of young people’s optimism for the future to make connections. Music and technology continue to be the best way for young people to stay connected, and so, familiar mobile phone ringtones are woven into the musical fabric and the text is inspired by social media. Samples have been pre-recorded during workshops and rehearsals in schools. The minimalist style of the work enables these elements and a range of musical genres to meld together in ensemble context, including opportunities for improvisation throughout the piece.

WITH THANKS TO The project has been made possible due to generous funding from the Gwent High Sheriffs’ Community Fund and Cardiff University CUROP. Thanks also to Rebekah Bickerton for her important contribution.

If you enjoyed tonight’s performance, in the spirit of the piece, we encourage you share your thoughts on social media. Simply tag Gwent Music, Caerphilly Music Service, Music for Youth and hashtag #CONNECT and #MFYPROMS.

The never ending, and sometimes "overwhelming, amount of text messages and social media status updates that have come to be part of young people’s lives will be featured during the performance. Thoughts and messages from students about the place of this in their lives has formed part of the project.

MUSIC FOR YOUTH NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP AWARDS 2016

T

he National Partnership Awards provide a unique opportunity for Music for Youth to introduce some of the talented musicians who perform at the National Festival to music industry partners. These partners can offer young musicians from across the country developmental and inspirational music education experiences. The award partners represent some of the key players in the arts and music sector and have a wealth of knowledge and opportunities to offer. There is also a special award for a school based music teacher who has shown inspirational leadership in the direction of their group at the National Festival. The 2015/16 season was a busy year for our National Partnership Awards, with activities ranging from a high energy brass band workshop in a Lancashire based Primary School, to a trio of young musicians recording their first EP in a professional recording studio and a side-by-side wind band rehearsal with the Royal Marines Band Service at their training centre in Portsmouth. This autumn, ten new National Partnership Awards were presented at a special event in the Royal Albert Hall. Relationships between the award partners and recipients are already underway, with exciting collaborations shaping up for the forthcoming year. Music for Youth is grateful to the award partners and hope that the activity programmes they present will inspire teachers, directors and most of all young musicians, leading to new partnership opportunities on an ongoing basis.

Music for Youth would like to thank our partners who have donated an award and made these unforgettable experiences possible.

IONA FYFE BAND

Iona Fyfe has become one of Scotland’s esteemed young ballad singers who, at 18 years old, continues to embrace and promote the repertoire and language of Aberdeenshire. Tonight’s work, Bonny Udny, is from the singing of Lizzie Higgins and John MacDonald. It is found in the Greig-Duncan Folk Song Collection V4 and John Ords. The narrative explains his love for the parish of Udny as well as his love for his significant other. Pride of Aberdeen is based on text from GriegDuncan V6, inspired by the well known Ellen of Aberdeen from John Ords Bothy Songs and Ballads, with re-written lyrics and melody by Iona Fyfe. The oldest known version of the song is from 1859 from John Garioch and seems to be a lament about a girl who is orphaned at 11, engaged by 17 and died the same year. Vocals/ Piano Iona Fyfe Guitar Luc McNally Fiddle Charlie Grey Whistle / Pipe Ross Miller

HOUGHTON AREA YOUTH BAND

Houghton Area Youth Band was formed in September 1973 for children aged between 6 - 18 years old to provide opportunities for young people to make music and today they have over 50 members. Tonight, the band will begin with Kongolela, a lively, swinging work in an African style, written by Nowegian composer Jan Magne and inspired by a 1998 tour with Brazz Brothers in Tanzania. Their second piece, Made of Wood, is a trombone solo for the band’s principal trombone player - Kate Garnett – and is one movement from a suite entitled Toys, commissioned by the band for local composer Lee Morris. The world premiere was performed earlier this year at the MFY Regional Festival at Sage, Gateshead. Niska Banja is a Serbian Roman Dance and offers a challenge with its 9/8 rhythm patterns. Llwch ar y Llyfre is a song from the musical Syrffio ar y Sgwâr and emphasises the need to read books as dust settles on them. 3, 2, 1 is a song from a musical sharing the same name and is a chance to hear the children's triumphant voice as school approaches the end of term and they look forward to the summer holidays. Wakefield Youth Percussion Ensemble (WYPE) is a fun and dynamic group which brings together children of different ages and from different backgrounds from schools throughout the Wakefield area. Tonight, WYPE present a journey through early percussion starting with A Short Walk, an interlinking piece with comical steps, chaotic movement and the impending drone of the drum. This then segues into Body Bossa, a piece without instruments, which uses the playground of sounds and tones from the human body. The performance finishes with Accent with a Groove, a piece inspired by Taiko drumming with an element of Latin flavour, performed with military precision. Tonight, the group perform Chamber Symphony by Shostakovich, based on his 8th String Quartet. The piece was written shortly after two traumatic events in the life of the composer: the first being the presentation of debilitating muscular weakness and the second his reluctant joining of the Communist Party. According to the score, it is dedicated ‘to the victims of fascism and war.' Three years ago they joined forces with young violinist Emmanuel Webb, another NKS student, which has allowed the Quartet to diversify. Pisac Market is part of the suite Spirit of the Andes composed by Musical Director, David Green, for the Ashford Guitar Ensemble on his return from Peru and adapted for the Quintet who added many of their own ideas. The Quintet have also put their unique stamp on the traditional Irish Washerwoman which they have had great fun adapting. Malunga is a 21-year-old from London who performed at Frequencies earlier this year. Zambian and Congolese music has been a massive part of her life. Tip Toe, performed tonight, is a song that talks about the games played within a relationship and how to be mature and leave if the situation no longer helps you grow. Start Again, also performed this evening, is one of the first songs Malunga wrote and released on Soundcloud. It embodies strength and embracing change and also talks about the challenges of feeling alone. Singer/songwriter Malunga Pianist Jerome

THE BLUE COAT SCHOOL SENIOR CHOIR

The Blue Coat School Senior Choir is one of several extra-curricular groups at the school and was formed to assist GCSE and A level students with their aural skills. Tonight, the choir begins with Locus Iste, a beautiful sacred motet composed by Bruckner in 1869 for the dedication of the Votive Chapel in the new-built Linz cathedral in Austria. The text translates to ‘This place was made by God, a priceless sacrament; it is without reproach’. The choir conclude with Deep in the Night, a modern choral work by the Finnish composer Jussi Chydenius (b. 1972), featuring the basses with a persistent riff and a haunting alto solo. THE TOP SOP QUARTET

The Top Sop Quartet have been friends for many years through the Oxfordshire Youth Big Band and its inspirational leader Chuck Lloyd. Six years ago the rhythm section of James on drums, Reuben on bass and Zoë on keys struck out on their own as a jazz trio. Will Pagel recently joined them on soprano sax to explore contemporary jazz. Another New Day was composed by Zoë especially for The Top Sop Quartet. The main inspiration comes from contemporary big band music, in particular the charts of Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band. The sparse opening (solo piano) builds to a full sound created by the soprano saxophone melody played over a tight funk groove. Gloucestershire Music, Bath & North East Somerset Music and South Gloucestershire Music Hubs join forces to celebrate the life of William Shakespeare. In association with the National Concert Band Festival, the three hubs commissioned a new work from Philip Harper honouring the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death entitled A Shakespearean Triptych. Local youth choirs and school choirs combine to create an impressive choir of 450 who will join the massed 140 piece wind band.

BLACK LEAVES OF ENVY AND BLUE SAINT

BOSTON YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA

Black Leaves of Envy are a four-piece heavy metal band from Helston, Cornwall and have collaborated with Liverpool's highly commended young rapper, Blue Saint. They met at the Frequencies Liverpool event in April 2016. Both I Can't Trust You and 605 were songs originally from Black Leaves of Envy’s EP Living in the Aftermath but have been adapted and arranged with Blue Saint. I Can't Trust You takes influence from bands such as Royal Blood but has since taken on a more angsty feel with the addition of Blue Saint's talent. The lyrics to 605 were written by Adam Jones and Cerys Plenty and depict a young man at war reevaluating his situation.

Boston Youth Jazz Orchestra (BYJO) is a Lincolnshire Music Service area ensemble made up of Boston’s most able young musicians. BYJO was formed in 1992 and is directed by Lee Hextall. This evening’s performance begins with a runaway train version of the traditional Gospel Song This Train. This is followed by the sassy contemporary blues song Why Do You Lie? by Liv Warfield. BYJO love the expressive freedom of performing from memory and the opportunity this provides them to move around the stage. This evening will be the last time many of the group will play together as members move on to make their music in other communities.

Miss Jones is a two piece acoustic ensemble, taking pride in its intimate, tender and soaring harmonies that chime together as one. The two members, Eleanor and May, are childhood friends that met through the Cornish music scene and their original writing focuses on fusing together their different ideas. Tonight’s two original songs, The Sun is Rising and Avenue, range from atmospheric and melancholic, to dynamic melodic patterns, to groovy and soulful with touches of bossa nova. Harmonies create the framework for each song and are a key part of Miss Jones’ music. Eleanor Mumford, May Robson

COLOMA AND THE COLOMA TRUST MASSED ENSEMBLE

The Massed Ensemble performance this evening is by students from Coloma Convent Girls' School, The Quest Academy Coloma Trust, Royal Russell School, St. Elphege's and Regina Coeli Primary Schools and the Bromley Youth Chamber Orchestra from the Bromley Youth Music Trust. It is a partnership that reaches across Croydon into Kent and South London and rehearsals have been extremely exciting. The Pearl was written by Howard Goodall to celebrate the 140th anniversary of Coloma Convent Girls School. It was first performed in the Royal Festival Hall in 2010 with the composer present. The words are based on a poem by George Herbert, a 17th century poet. While the language is quite complex, essentially, the poet is saying that a person can only enjoy the benefits, rewards and enrichments of learning, human relationships, pleasure and the arts if they see them as a path to God. CROESYCEILIOG SCHOOL SENIOR CHOIR

Croesyceiliog School Senior Choir consists of pupils from Year 10 to Year 13 who all share a love of performing musical theatre. For tonight’s performance, the choir has chosen two contrasting songs to perform that have very different challenges. The first, Alexander Hamilton, is a piece taken from Hamilton, a hip-hop musical written in 2015. Aside from the rapping, the choir were challenged with very sparse accompaniment, meaning timing and tuning must be of focus. Hear My Song is a piece from the musical Songs For A New World. The choir particularly enjoy singing this ballad because of the close harmonies and exciting build up of the piece. ABLE FACES

Able Faces is a pop band from Glasgow, founded in 2015, who performed at Music for Youth's Exchange earlier this year. Tight vocal harmonies and catchy melodies bring a lot of character to their well crafted songs. The two songs Able Faces perform this evening are taken from the group's 2016 EP Colour. Not Alone is the EP’s opening track and has remained a firm favourite of each band member, for its grand chorus, and interesting lyrics. Lucky Ones is a feel good song which features the unusual use of steel drums. The song is significant to the band as it was the first song they wrote for the new EP and it has gathered a lot of online support since its release.

They have had a successful period of busking in London and Kingston, and have moved on to add more complex and challenging pieces to their repertoire. Tonight’s two numbers, You Don’t! You Won’t! and South Rampart Street Parade are favourites of the quartet, even though it took several weeks of solid learning to master them. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE COUNTY JUNIOR STRING ORCHESTRA

The Northamptonshire County Junior String Orchestra began 10 years ago with the objective of bringing together the youngest most promising string players in Northamptonshire. For some of the violinists, this is their second appearance in a Music for Youth Proms. Tonight’s first piece, The Rolling Heather, is a simple traditional folk tune which the group and conductors have sensitively arranged to make their own. Shepherds Hey is a well known folk tune popular with Morris dancers. It was a challenge to play the notes from memory, but in doing so, more detail has been added including a bit of movement and percussion from the players. SPECS

SPECS is a five piece band formed four years ago at the Harwich We Are Music club which helps young people to advance themselves through popular music. Forgotten City and New Beginnings were written collectively by the members of SPECS. The lyrics for New Beginnings are about realising someone's negative influence and moving on. This rock song also incorporates a component influenced by ska music. Forgotten City is the band's third and favourite composition. Its lyrics are about reminiscing about better times before urban decline. It is a rock song with a simple chord progression over which the melody was written. Lead Vocals Patrick (Paddy) Bartholomew Lead Guitar Chris Bartholomew Rhythm Guitar Luca Kulacz Bass Guitar Erin Thomas Drums Jodi Thomas

CERDD GWENT MUSIC MASSED ENSEMBLE

Gwent Music Service and Caerphilly Music Service join forces to create a 500 strong massed ensemble. Tonight’s piece is based on Steven Reich’s works and compositions, inspired by minimalism and the possibility of making connections using music and technology regardless of distance or language. The piece features a 300 strong choir, percussionists, beatboxers, rappers and Taiko drummers. MARI GREEN

Mari Green is a young jazz/soul vocalist from Glasgow. She has been writing original music for five years and performing it for the past three years. Tonight she will be accompanied by her band. The first song, Energy, was written by Mari last year and tells the story of a woman struggling with depression whose lover helps her with this by simply being there for her. It has a ballad with a soulful vibe. The second piece is one of Maria’s most recent compositions. Hear Me is about the idea of a person feeling misunderstood in a relationship, like their partner does not ‘hear them’. The group has a mix of Roma and non-Roma musicians and meet every Saturday to play traditional Roma music from all over Eastern Europe. Both pieces played tonight are traditional Roma songs that music tutors Gejza and Czarey have taught the other musicians in the group. Bordeais is from Romania and Mamo Miri is from Czech Republic. GREENHEAD COLLEGE BIG BAND

The Greenhead College Big Band are from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Composed by one of our pianists, Lucas Kelly, the Mini Jymphony in Bb was inspired by The Big Phat Band and the repertoire of Gordon Goodwin. The work explores the battle of styles between traditional swing and more modern funk, with a combination of the two at the end. The name 'Jymphony' is a shorthand term of 'Jazz Symphony'. The finale section of the Jymphony is inspired by Louis Prima's Sing, Sing, Sing which the band will also perform this evening. Made famous by Benny Goodman and his orchestra, this piece will feature James Taylor and Matt Foster on percussion and the clarinet of Kitty Byrne. WESSEX YOUTH ORCHESTRA

The Wessex Youth Orchestra (WYO), who recently received a MFY National Partership Award, are one of the largest youth orchestras on the South Coast. Tonight’s piece, The Firebird - a ballet based on a Russian fairytale - tells the story of Prince Ivan, the Firebird, 13 enchanted princesses, the evil sorcerer Kastcheï, a magic feather, spells, a lullaby, good winning over evil, thanksgiving and celebration. The Firebird score dazzles with its musical colours, calling upon different musical worlds for each character - a sturdy folksong for Ivan, savage chromaticism for the ogreish enchanter Kastcheï and a glittering brilliance for the Firebird herself.
