MUSIC FOR YOUTH IS ON THE MOVE
WELCOME
M
usic for Youth works with thousands of young people from all over the UK, all of whom are passionate about music. We know how important it is to be actively involved in the arts from a young age – the benefits last a lifetime. Through the REGIONAL FESTIVAL SERIES, 40,000 young musicians take to the stage at 50 different festivals to perform to their peers and supporters. Taking part in a MFY regional event gives young musicians and teachers a chance to feel part of something bigger, and to connect to other young people across the country who, like them, love making music. In July each year, 10,000 young musicians gather in Birmingham for the incredible five day NATIONAL FESTIVAL. This is their opportunity to share their achievements, hear other young musicians from across the country, to compare notes and for some, to engage in a bit of friendly rivalry....
W
elcome to the Music for Youth Proms 2015. Over the course of the three evenings, we will hear over 3,000 young musicians from the length and breadth of the U.K. These three annual concerts are a spectacular celebration of what young people can achieve in music, whether under the direction of a teacher, or through their independent endeavours beyond the school setting. As Music for Youth continues to expand its programme, the artists it works with and the type of partners we team up with, the range of music and young musicians we work with broadens. You may have noticed that we have renamed the concerts - Music for Youth Proms (formerly Schools Proms) - to reflect this.
Another first this year is that we have commissioned a special finale to close each concert , which attempts to represent the voice of the young musicians who take centre stage. The finale will involve all 1,000 performers each night. Our thanks goes to Joe Broughton, Music for Youth's Artist in Residence, for his work on this, which is a fitting tribute to the sentiments of Elgar's familiar finale Land of Hope and Glory , but from a contemporary perspective. What better way to bring everyone together? (See pg. 10 for more information).
At the National Festival, the ever growing FESTIVAL FRINGE offers a whole range of musical activities, outdoor stages, workshops and collaborations with professional artists to all of the 40,000 musicians who took part in a regional festival.
to both accomplished musicians and those who are much nearer with the beginning of their musical journey (see pg. 14). Have you heard of FREQUENCIES yet? This is a new series of events where up and coming young bands come together with professional artists for sought after performance opportunities at iconic gig venues. 2015 saw the birth of EXCHANGE: a new event that attracted young people from all over Scotland. It took place in Glasgow over two days, offering performance platforms, panel discussions with music industry professionals and artist led workshops. The talent we uncovered was incredible! 2015 also saw the development of NEW MUSIC STAGE, supporting the writing and performance of original music by young people. It gives them a way to get their music played – and heard - by other young musicians. And finally..... Music for Youth has appointed its first ARTIST IN RESIDENCE - composer and multiinstrumentalist, Joe Broughton. As part of this role, Joe worked with young musicians to devise this evening’s finale. See pg. 10 to find out more.
At the MUSIC FOR YOUTH PROMS, each evening we present a large MASSED ENSEMBLE from a different region. These 500 strong collaborations are designed to be inclusive, and through them we open up the proms experience

THE VOICE OF YOUNG PEOPLE MUSIC FOR YOUTH’S ARTIST IN RESIDENCE, JOE BROUGHTON, INTRODUCES HIS NEW FINALE
TELL US ABOUT THE NEW FINALE Artist in Residence at Music for Youth I have written a new anthem for young people. The piece "is aAsrespectful response to ‘Land of Hope and Glory ’ - most definitely not a re-writing of it! In the same way that ‘Land of Hope and Glory ’ reflects on our country and its place in the world as it was in 1902, we do the same thing but for the present day. We live in a world of different challenges now and perhaps there are different ways we can use our influence. The lyrics of the piece were written in workshops with many young people at the Music for Youth National Festival and with members of Birmingham Conservatoire Folk Ensemble - a special mention has to go to Josh Wunderlich who contributed some of the most poignant lines.
Having said that the piece is an anthem, perhaps it’s more of a call to arms of a different nature - a celebration, a message of hope. There are sections of the music that show determination for change, that are about stopping to question the way we do things. But there is also an out and out party at the end where we can all celebrate the optimism of youth! In writing the piece I wanted to reflect all these different elements in something that could be played without notation, something not drowning in its own detail, but with enough content to take us all on a journey from the frustration we sometimes feel at the world to realising that the time for change is right now.

THE FIRST ARTIST IN RESIDENCE ROLE AT MUSIC FOR YOUTH DEMONSTRATES A COMMITMENT TO COMPOSITION AND CREATION OF NEW MUSIC BY, FOR, AND WITH YOUNG MUSICIANS. Joe Broughton, an established friend and collaborator of Music for Youth, is a composer and multi- instrumentalist. He tours the world with his band, The Urban Folk Quartet , as well as specialising in leading large ensembles and composing for major events up and down the country. Throughout the year, as Artist in Residence, Joe has engaged with young musicians at Music for Youth festivals, collecting material for his new commission that will end each Prom concert this year.
WHAT MAKES YOU TICK AS A MUSICIAN? is about so much more than notes on a page. The way we use music to help us interact, "to Music communicate and to share experiences is, I believe, integral to the human race. I love music!
I love highly complex and innovative music and I love the blues. There can be as much music, as much intention, integrity and honesty in a two-year-old's improvised song as in Shostakovich’s 5 th Symphony. I couldn’t really say that one was better than the other. Energy and communication are for me the most important aspects of music, especially when performing. There is nothing more infectious than the joy of young people actually enjoying making music together.

MASSED ENSEMBLES AT THE MFY PROMS
T
he Music for Youth Prom concerts are a celebration of the MFY annual season, show-casing high quality performances from some of the UK’s most creative, innovative and energetic young musicians. Each evening, approximately 1,000 talented young people will perform. Half of them have been invited after impressing us at the National Festival in Birmingham earlier in the year and the other half are with us as part of an innovative Massed Ensemble performance. The three Massed Ensembles join us from different regions of the country and each offer a wider group of young people an opportunity to take part in a large scale project, showcasing their locally produced work on a national stage. By supporting these ensembles Music for Youth aims to encourage innovation, ambition and good practice.

M
ary Rose was composed by Martin Read in 2000 as part of Between Now and Always: A Hampshire Cantata, commissioned by Hampshire County Council’s Millennium Composition project. The sea shanties represent the various aspects of the tragic sinking of the Mary Rose in the shallow waters of the Solent. It was designed as a complete project, combining all elements of performance (music and dance) as well as original compositions which tonight are added by Laura Jurd and Catherine Upfold. Hampshire County Council is proud to support music education and values the effect it has on children’s lives. The Hampshire Massed Choir was conceived as a transition project for primary pupils, giving the opportunity for secondary schools to work with their primary feeder schools. They are accompanied by instrumentalists from Hampshire county ensembles and members of the Wessex Dance Academy.

It has been great to work with such a huge choir as well as excellent dancers and musicians and also on a story which is very local and real to us in Hampshire. he group performing for you this evening has been brought together in order to perform excerpts from Beth Nielsen Chapman’s The Mighty Sky . The musicians from Kirklees and Daventry have performed these songs before and are delighted to be on stage with young people from Chiltern for the biggest performance yet! With 15 choirs, narrators, soloists and instrumentalists from all three areas, they ’ve found out how to put ‘mighty ’ into The Mighty Sky!
The Mighty Sky is a truly eclectic mix of popular song styles. It takes factual information about planets, moons, neutron stars and the theory of the big bang and sets them to music in a very accessible way. The young people who perform these songs not only go away having loved their musical experience, but also having absorbed information about space and considered the power and enormity of its creation.

As such, we should all see that we have a common interest to unite in order to preserve our future on our spaceship, Earth.

T
he Oval Learning Cluster Massed Ensemble, in collaboration with English Touring Opera (ETO), is made up of eight primary schools and two secondary schools in Lambeth. The children are accompanied by young players from The Royal Academy of Music. The 400 strong choir is aged between 9 and 12, with the players aged between 16 and 19. The Oval Learning Cluster in partnership with ETO has been producing successful large-scale operatic education projects since 2013.
800 Miles as the Albatross Flies is an original piece, with music by Russell Hepplewhite and words by Tim Yealland. The story has children from Lambeth signing up for an extreme adventure, in which they find themselves sailing in a replica of the tiny James Caird lifeboat from Elephant Island in Antarctica to South Georgia, precisely 100 years after Ernest Shackleton and his crew made the first heroic voyage. The children have contributed in developing many aspects of the piece, including the staging.
It has been a fantastic experience for all "the children in the Oval Learning Cluster and in Lambeth to work with professionals from English Touring Opera. They have created a stunning piece of music-theatre charting the adventures of Ernest Shackleton. The children have developed new skills in singing and performing as well as greater self-esteem. They are absolutely delighted to be able to showcase their talents at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall.

M
usic for Youth launched the National Partnership Awards in 2013 as we saw an opportunity to match some of the fantastic groups who take part in our events with industry partners who are keen to welcome young musicians from across the country through their doors. The award partners represent some of the key players in the arts and in music education and each offers bespoke, hands-on opportunities for the young musicians. As a national organisation, Music for Youth aims to broker relationships that will inspire, but that also have the potential to develop into ongoing educational partnerships.
The 2014/15 season was another successful year for the National Partnership Awards, enabling young musicians from all over the country to do something different and special with their musicmaking. Back in February, the Wigan Youth String Orchestra performed the first movement of Mozart’s 40th Symphony alongside the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the Royal Festival Hall. As David Little, Head of Wigan Music Service, describes: In music education we are always looking to create life-changing opportunities and life-long memories and they don’t come much bigger than this. Not only has this group of children won a wonderful award, it has also won them the opportunity to play with a world-class orchestra at a top class concert hall on the same day. We as a music service are very proud of them and it is also a good endorsement for our work .

This year, Music for Youth presented seven new groups with a National Partnership Award at a special celebration event at the Royal Albert Hall. Relationships between the groups and the award sponsors have already begun to develop and all are looking forward to their ‘once in a lifetime’ experience in the spring.

PRESENTER PETE LETANKA
P
ete is a professional jazz pianist, composer and music education specialist. He graduated in 1997 with a starred 1st class BA (hons) and the Leeds University Armes award for the highest mark in his year. After graduating he formed the Pete Letanka Trio, with bassist Andy Hamil and drummer Winston Clifford. They are active on the London jazz scene and across the UK. Pete has enjoyed performing at Ronnie Scott’s, the Purcell Room and the Queen Elizabeth Hall. In 2005 he was signed to award-winning jazz record label Zephyr Records, who released his debut album, Afrostocracy . In 1997, he began working for the Children’s Music Workshop and has led projects for the Royal Opera House, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Portrait Gallery. He has led creative music projects in Portugal, South Africa, Lebanon and India. He enjoyed five years as the music director of Glyndebourne Youth Opera and three years as the artistic director of Aldeburgh Music’s Group A. Pete Letanka has worked with Music for Youth for a number of years, presenting the Primary Prom concerts and delivering workshops as part of the National Festival Fringe. Music for Youth is thrilled Pete is continuing his relationship with the organisation by presenting this year’s Music for Youth Proms.

CAERLEON COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE
Caerleon Comprehensive School is a mixed comprehensive school of over 1500 students. The Percussion Ensemble is one of several ensembles at the school. Bushido Taiko has been composed by the students on Taiko drums. 'Bushido' means 'The Way of the Warrior', and represents the strict ethical code that Samurai warriors lived by. As well as being fierce warriors, they also strongly believed in honour, kindness and frugal living and loyalty to their Lord. The students have spent many pleasurable hours developing, rehearsing and choreographing the piece for tonight's performance. YSGOL GERDD CEREDIGION
Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion is an innovative music school based in Teifi Valley, West Wales. It was founded by Islwyn Evans to promote singing of the highest standard amongst the youth of the area. Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion has established itself at the forefront of the youth choral movement with an impressive list of achievements: twice winners of S4C's Côr Cymru and eight times winners at Llangollen International Eisteddfod. Kaval Sviri is a song by the Bulgarian composer Petar Liondev, which tells of a young girl who expresses her love for a kaval (flute) player heard near her village. Dubula is a folk song of the Xhosa people of South Africa arranged by Stephen Hadfield for a cappella choirs. This arrangement really captures the authentic boisterous style of the song. CORNWALL YOUTH ORCHESTRA
This performance brings together young people in primary, secondary and tertiary education and three different organisations from different parts of the country. Initiated by Cornwall Youth Orchestra (Cornwall Music Education Hub), this collaboration also involves young violinists from Northamptonshire (Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust) and students studying Iranian music at City University, London. Prince Zal and the Simorgh (2012) was commissioned by the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) and City University London, to introduce children to Iranian music and culture. It is based on a story from the Persian epic poem, Shahnameh. It tells the story of the young

Prince Zal, who is abandoned by his father, only to be rescued by a magical mystical bird, the 'Simorgh'. The story ends in reconciliation after the father finally realises his mistake. It's a timely reminder, during a period in which nothing but bad news seems to come from the Middle East, that the region is also responsible for some of the most beautiful works of art humanity has produced.
of their own compositions are based on improvisation ideas that worked particularly well. Louise’s Lullaby was written for a friend. The first theme was composed by Jacob and the contrasting second section was written by Amileah. The Simpsons Theme is the duo’s own arrangement of Danny Elfman’s famous piece, adding improvised embellishments and scalic passages to the main theme.

Coloma Convent Girls School has a very good reputation for music and the Coloma Junior Chamber Choir is taken from years 7 and 8. Faith is at the centre of everything at the school and underpins much of the choir’s repertoire. The girls sing everything from renaissance polyphony to songs from West End musicals and jazz. Oremi is a great favourite because of its lively rhythms and exciting sound. Hushabye Mountain has also become really popular and the girls have really enjoyed working to produce a lyrical and warm tone for this piece. The arrangement suits their sound and audiences often tell us they feel very relaxed at the end of it! He has recently self-released his debut EP entitled In the Face of It All, which is available to purchase on iTunes. He is currently working on his new EP which is called Sanguine On the Rocks. The Hampshire Massed Choir was conceived as a transition project for primary pupils, giving opportunity for secondary schools to work with their primary feeder schools. They are accompanied by instrumentalists from county ensembles and members of the Wessex Dance Academy. Mary Rose was composed by Martin Read in 2000 as part of Between Now and Always: A Hampshire Cantata, commissioned by Hampshire County Council’s Millennium Composition project. The sea shanties represent the various aspects of the tragic sinking of the Mary Rose in the shallow waters of the Solent. It was designed as a complete project, combining all elements of performance, as well as original compositions that tonight are added by Laura Jurd and Catherine Upfold. Established in 1997, Wigan Youth Brass Band is one of a wide range of senior ensemble opportunities offered by Wigan Council Music Service, a partner in the Greater Manchester Music Hub. Over the past 20 years, the band has toured Europe and produced two professional albums. Tonight’s short Fanfare was written by composer in residence, Christopher Evans (Tuba BBC Philharmonic). Pound the Streets combines modern day brass sounds with relentless and pounding rock music to produce a high energy, feel good factor! The beautiful Irish Blessing moves from delicate quartet to a full forces, stirring rendition of this ancient Celtic prayer. Prelude for an Occasion begins with a short fanfare introduction and moves into a quasi-march with a somewhat rhythmic and dissonant middle section before returning to a triumphant restatement of the opening fanfare. THE TREE ARMY WITH BOSTON YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA
This performance is a collaboration between Boston Youth Jazz Orchestra (BYJO) and Hawthorn Tree Primary School, involving 80 young people from Year 3 to 13. BYJO is a Lincolnshire Music Service area ensemble, made up of Boston's finest young musicians. Hawthorn Tree Primary is a school where music is celebrated and promoted widely. This evening’s performance begins with Brass Machine which mixes brassy big band jazz with a celebration of whole class samba. In complete contrast the programme then adds the BYJO singers and the Hawthorn Tree brass to conclude with the song Valerie. The young musicians range from those playing their very first notes to those progressing to university and all the young musicians are performing from memory. Music plays a huge role in the daily life at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School. We encourage children to develop their love of music and children are given the opportunity to attend choir during the school day, rather than after school; this enables any child who wants to, to participate. Our members have family links with over 20 countries around the world and so we are a truly multinational choir! Over the last year we have been studying the South African apartheid and the power of apartheid protest songs. The children, many of whom have family ties to Africa, have been deeply moved by this exploration. Today, Amovolovolo and Senzenina bring the power of that music alive, whilst celebrating the 25th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's release from prison.

Gnoss is made up of two award winning Orcadian musicians, currently studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. With a musical sensitivity beyond their years, Gnoss’ mix of traditional and self-penned tunes creates a sound that spans many
influences. The compositional flair of these two highly stylistic young musicians, combined with the rich musical heritage of Orkney, makes for a lively, engaging and honest performance. The first set, The Initial Reel, is an original composition that reflects on a particularly eventful night in Edinburgh; and the second piece was written for the Gable End Theatre in Hoy (one of Orkney's Southern Isles). This piece starts with a playful 7/8 tune inspired by Graham’s colour-blindness, and then launches into a traditional reel from Ireland called the Kerry Fling. Red Kyte is a North East London band who formed three years ago. Their sound is an edgy indie rock with jazz, funk, and urban influences. They are taking their sound to new heights and love to experiment with any genres that come their way. Over the three years, they have progressed with their writing, attempting to be more sophisticated and original. They have worked with the youth and community music organisation, CM, who have helped them mould as a band and turned music from a hobby to a passion. Sam has been composing for many years. She was a violin and vocal major at a performing arts school in Philadelphia and moved back to England in 2014 when she started a band with some friends, who are here with her today. They have since won Bedfordshire Battle of the Bands and have performed at the Rhythms of the World festival. Both songs performed this evening are Sam's own compositions. For You was written for piano and voice, while Ici was originally written for harmonised voices and guitars, with drums added later. After Sam's band had the chance to play with the RNCM Session Orchestra in a live improvisation earlier this year (as part of MFY New Music Stage), strings and piano were added in an arrangement by her fellow student Jan Margolius. It is performed here alongside the Cornwall Youth Orchestra strings. Withycombe Raleigh C of E Primary School is a state school with a strong musical tradition. Every year Year 6 children are invited to join a junkband. They start with body and voice rhythms and then move on to a variety of junk material. This year the music lessons were based on the BBC initiative, Ten Pieces. This inspirational experience resulted in the Stomp Band choosing their six favourite pieces as starting points for their own composition. The pieces they chose are: In the Hall of the Mountain King, Zadok the Priest, The Firebird, Beethoven's Fifth, Connect It and ‘Mars' from The Planets. They end with a celebration of all the pieces chosen, playing together. Richard Taunton 6th Form College Jazz Combo are all students studying music. The college is a general education 6th form college, with a particularly renowned reputation for its music provision. As a college of around 1200 students, over 250 engage with music courses at advanced level with a significant number progressing to study music at university or conservatoire. This combo rehearse weekly and have performed a variety of student compositions and standards. 2 Tone was a piece written by Alex Lockheart (the group's guitarist) for his A level Music composition. It draws influence from Alex's eclectic mix of interests and tastes. Accord Acapella is a self-led group of friends who formed at Wells Cathedral School. The members are currently studying at the Universities of York, Durham, Royal Holloway and Cambridge, and The Royal College of Music. Accord Acapella’ aims not only to have fun, but to bridge the gap between choral greats and modern styles of music. Caliban’s Dream was written specially for Accord Acapella. It is taken from Shakespeare’s The Tempest and expresses the sense of mystery in the magic of the island through music. The second piece Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel? displays the slaves' desperation to be saved by God as Daniel was. The energy in their frustration makes for a striking and fun piece to finish with. The Peak District String Orchestra (PDSO) is the flagship orchestra of the Peak District Music Centres, a charitable organisation which aims to support and promote music-making for young people. The Peak District Music Centres are supported by the Derbyshire Music Education Hub. The PDSO pride themselves on committed, effervescent and engaging performances leaving no stone unturned when exploring the string orchestra repertoire! This evening they will be performing from memory. The Three Pieces in an Old Style is a little known gem of the Polish composer, Henryk GÓrecki. Much of his work is melancholic, reflecting the mood in post war Poland. Echoes of pain streaked joy can be clearly heard in these three arrangements of traditional Polish songs. RUBIK'S CUBE
Rubik's Cube is a group of amazingly talented pupils from Osborne School in Winchester, a special needs school. The band promote self-esteem building, friendship and fun through their exhilarating concerts. The band choose their own songs, practice most lunchtimes and are big fans of popular music! The group was set up 6 years ago when a pupil was disengaging with lessons and found a passion for drumming. He asked for a band to be put together to support his talent, and 'Rubik's Cube' was born. The band have already played some big events, including the Winchester Theatre Royal and performing as The Olympic Torch arrived at Osborne School in 2012. This evening, the band will be performing a 'mash-up' of all their favourite songs. They couldn't decide on just 1 or 2, so they bunched them altogether into a medley of popular songs. Gwent Youth Wind Orchestra comprises some of the very best wind, brass and percussion students from the four local education authorities. The Wind Orchestra is one of several county ensembles organised by Gwent Music, whose aim is to deliver excellence in musical tuition and performance opportunities. Silver Screen harks back to the days of silent film, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. The story unfolds from opening credits to a scene set in a typical “Wild West” American town. Local happy go lucky hero meets pompous Mayor’s beautiful daughter. Archetypal evil villain steps in between the star crossed sweethearts, a chase and fight ensues with the inevitable poor girl being tied to the railway tracks. A train is heard approaching, will the unconscious hero recover and save the day? In the best of cinematic traditions he does, with the villain getting his just deserts and they all live happily ever after! The musicians from Kirklees and Daventry have performed these songs before and are delighted to be on stage with young people from Chiltern for the biggest performance yet! With 15 choirs, narrators, soloists and instrumentalists from all three areas, they’ve found out how to put ‘mighty’ into The Mighty Sky! This is a truly eclectic mix of popular song styles. It takes factual information about space and the theory of the big bang and sets them to music in a very child friendly way. Harrow Tamil School Association is a charity helping the local community to learn Tamil and Carnatic music and instruments, teaching students from age 5 to 21. This group of 20 students consists of performers of different ages, performing Veena, Violin, Keyboard, Drums, Miruthangam, Morsing, Gadam and Kanjira. Improvisation in raga is the soul of Indian classical music. ‘Manodharma sangeetham’ or ‘Music of imagination’ as it is known in Carnatic music, embraces several varieties of improvisation. Raga rock is rock or pop music with a heavy Indian influence, either in its construction, its timbre, or its use of instrumentation, such as the Violin, Veena, Miruthangam, Gadam, and Tabla. St. Aidan’s Chamber Choir is made up of 16-18 year olds. The choir has achieved national recognition through the BBC Songs of Praise Choir of the Year competition, winning the competition in 2006 and appearing on many other occasions. They perform regularly on national and regional stages, and also tour internationally. The choir’s repertoire includes a wide range of sacred and secular music, gospel music and pop arrangements. Signifying Nothing was written by current student, Tom Knowles, and sets words from Shakespeare’s Macbeth in an atmospheric way. The choir is very pleased to have performed this piece at the Music for Youth New Music Stage in Birmingham and again tonight, under the direction of Tom himself. Armottoman Osa is a surprisingly energetic setting of a poem from Finland, which says “How cold is the waterfowl, swimming on the icy lake; so cold is the person without love”. The choir has enjoyed the rhythmic and linguistic challenges of this exciting piece. Katie Doyle is a singer-songwriter from Paisley, Scotland. Katie's songs are full of soulful melodies and lyrics, with Katie taking great inspiration from songwriters such as Carole King and Laura Nyro. Stuck With No Time has a slight groove and is smooth with calming chord structures. With lyrics such as ‘staring at my blank page, and nothing is coming to mind’ gives listeners a clue that Katie wrote it during a long period of writer’s block! Katie doesn’t often remember writing her songs, she describes the process as "a sort of possession", and that something takes over her. Old Ones is a song Katie wrote after discovering that a boy she liked wasn't so into her. It expresses the confusion and pain felt afterwards. Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra is part of an extensive range of ensembles provided by Leicestershire Schools Music Service (LSMS), a department supported by both Leicester City and Leicestershire County Council. In 1910, a young and relatively unknown Stravinsky was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev to write a ballet for his Ballet Russe. Drawing on Russian folklore The Firebird tells of an ogre-like figure, Kastchei the Deathless, whose downfall is brought about by a beautiful rare bird - the enchanting Firebird. CODA is a small vocal group made up of students from Sedgehill School in Lewisham. The group formed after being inspired by a workshop with Natually 7 at the Royal Albert Hall in 2013. Since then they have performed at countless events including a recent performance at Buckingham Palace. CODA prides itself on its collaborative nature and so all the songs were chosen and arranged by the whole group. The songs were chosen based on the performers' different strengths and as the arrangements have developed, they have been enjoyed more and more. OVAL LEARNING CLUSTER MASSED ENSEMBLE
The Oval Learning Cluster Massed Ensemble, in collaboration with English Touring Opera (ETO), is made up of eight primary schools and two secondary school in Lambeth. The children are accompanied by young players from The Royal Academy of Music. The 400 strong choir is aged between 9 and 12, with the players aged between 16 and 19. 800 Miles as the Albatross Flies is an original piece. It tells the story of children from Lambeth signing up for an extreme adventure, in which they find themselves sailing in a replica of the tiny James Caird lifeboat from Elephant Island in Antarctica to South Georgia, precisely 100 years after Ernest Shackleton and his crew made the first heroic voyage. The children have contributed in developing many aspects of the piece, including the staging. Contours is a Cornish three piece fusion of folk, gypsy jazz and snug three part harmony, who play both covers in their own unique style and home-grown material. Established 2 years ago, they draw on influences from Eastern Europe, Sweden, Ireland and genres such as tradfolk, prog-rock, blues, gypsy music and acoustic folk. Bang Bang is a well-known classic, arranged and adapted many times. Therefore, the trio were faced with the task of making it their own. After many experimental ideas, the group produced a soaring ballad with 3 part harmony and a furious element of surprise. Sarah is a song close to the trio’s heart. COR AELWYD CHWILOG
Cor Aelwyd Chwilog is based in the small village of Chwilog, Eifionydd, near the Lleyn Penninsula, North Wales. For over 30 years Pat and Carys Jones have brought together young people from a wide area to sing and compete at local and national Eisteddfodau. The choir enjoy performing at concerts and appearing on TV and radio programmes. Benedictus is from a piece from a work about Llywelyn, the last Welsh Prince of Wales and his wife Eleanor de Montford. Within the work there are pieces from the Latin mass - Benedictus being one of them. Bryn Terfel and Rhys Meirion have made this song famous. Serch is a medley of six Welsh folk songs based on love. Wardle Junior Blast is made up of brass, woodwind and percussion from Wardle Academy Junior/Training Bands and 7 local Primary Schools: Smithy Bridge, St Andrews, St James, Littleborough, Kentmere, Holy Trinity and St Marys. All the students are taught by Gwen Smith, Jane Conway and Lee Rigg from Wardle Academy. The band will be playing from memory tonight. They enjoy playing together in one huge group alongside other children from different schools and have a large repertoire, but these pieces are the band favourites and they hope you will be entertained. BIRMINGHAM CONSERVATOIRE FOLK ENSEMBLE
Joe Broughton's Birmingham Conservatoire Folk Ensemble started out as an elective for students studying at Birmingham Conservatoire and has grown into the renowned 50 piece touring entity that it is today. The power of this ensemble, that can have up to 100 members, has to be seen to be believed. Apart from being an incredible show for the audience, the ensemble has become something of a training ground for the young folk generation. Their music is put together by standing around in a room and playing with ideas. All the music is learnt by ear and everyone has a say in how it should sound. Often tunes are traditional but at times members of the band write specifically for the ensemble. Everything is geared towards a high energy show that can't fail to get your toes tapping. DEVON YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA
The Devon Youth Jazz Orchestras (DYJO) have recently celebrated their 40th birthday. The DYJOs comprise of DYJO1 (performing tonight), in which the most able students perform, DYJO2 where many have their first experiences of jazz and the Ambassadors Group who take jazz into primary schools. The pieces performed tonight were easy to choose as the musicians love to play them so much. Blue Opening features short breaks of improvisation from all corners of the band, reflecting the fact that all members of the DYJOs are jazz soloists. Turnaround is a beautifully written Latin funk tune that is both exuberant and irresistible fun. Voodoo Blood is a Manchester band re-imagining blues rock. With hard hitting riffs and soaring guitar solos, the band guarantees an electrifying performance. The team met at university and bonded over their mutual love for classic blues and dirty grooves. They are now eager to release their first single and are hard at work on their second. With songs fuelled by raw emotion and wailing vocals Voodoo Blood will give you a performance that will leave you feeling all shook up. Bluesy Baby is a groove-driven lesson about cutting negative people out of your life and breaking free from things that try to drag you down. Taste Your Love is an intense song with chunky riffs and prominently powerful and gritty vocals.
NORTHAMPTONSHIRE COUNTY YOUTH CONCERT BAND
The Northamptonshire County Youth Concert Band is the Senior Wind Orchestra of the Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust (NMPAT) and was formed over 40 years ago. Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night draws its inspiration from the poem by Dylan Thomas, written to express his anguish at the approaching death of his father. The piece makes use of a range of compositional devices including: improvised percussion writing, quarter tone tuning, poly-tonal layering of hymn melodies, reminiscent of Charles Ives, and off-stage effects to create a work of great passion and anguish, full of drama and emotion. The composer describes the work as having a strong sense of affirmation and continuance, reflective of the struggles and persistence of the human spirit. Young Brasscals is a unique blend of pop, soul and funk, playing brass arrangements of many hit tunes, new and old. The band have been finalists in the Gigs Big Busk competition, been on tour in Italy, and have played in prestigious venues such as the O2. Sweet Dreams starts with powerful chords and goes into a fast, funky and upbeat bass line. As a band it is a favourite to play due to the pace and audience reaction. Brooklyn is now a trademark Brasscal piece. The trombone line is both technically difficult and insanely high, and the tuba solo is also very impressive. Combined with a drum solo and a beat you can dance to, Brooklyn is a piece we hope the audience will enjoy immensely.
CITY OF BELFAST YOUTH ORCHESTRA
The City of Belfast Youth Orchestra (CBYO) is the most senior of the many ensembles in the City of Belfast School of Music, which is administered by the Education Authority Northern Ireland. This year marks the CBYO’s 60th anniversary making it the oldest youth orchestra in Ireland. On stage tonight 24 schools from the Belfast area are represented. In addition to the annual season of home concerts, the orchestra has toured extensively throughout the USA and Europe to critical acclaim. Tonight the CBYO will perform the finale of Shostakovich’s epic Symphony No.5 in D Minor. This tour de force movement is full of excitement from the outset and allows all sections of the orchestra to shine. To conclude tonight's concert, the orchestra will perform Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1.
