A PARTNERSHIP PROJECT WITH SOUNd ANd MUSIC & BIRMINGHAM CONTEMPORARY MUSIC GROUP

Public launch - Listen Imagine Compose: changing the way composition is taught in secondary schools New Lecture Theatre, Birmingham Conservatoire 17:00–18:00 There are many challenges in teaching composition. Listen Imagine Compose has addressed these challenges through a series of symposia and action research projects and aims to bring about significant change in the way composition is taught in secondary schools. Six action research projects have taken place around the country investigating six key questions relating to teaching composition at KS3 and 4. Themes include evaluation, effective feedback, the role of listening in the creative process, introducing unfamiliar aesthetics, creative use of technology and how expert composers and performers can be most effectively used in the classroom. The context for music education is currently in flux and we are keen to see composition and creative music-making as central to these developments and at the heart of young people’s music education. This public launch will share the initial findings, key learning from the project and the implications for practice.

Symphony Hall 13:15-14:15 Led by percussionist Rob Farrer, this is a fun and physical rhythm based workshop, built around MFY’s commission, Piece on a Postcard. ABOUT MFY

THE MFY SEASON

Passionate About Music - Open To All

The season is designed to inspire, nurture and support musicians at every level of experience. Festivals take place in a variety of venues in over 50 locations across the UK. As well as performing, groups watch, listen and support one another.

Founded in 1970, MFY is a national music education charity providing free performance and audience opportunities for young people aged 21 and under through an annual season of nationwide festivals and concerts. MFY is a festival series, not a competition. It offers young people the opportunity to perform live in a supportive and non-competitive environment and more than 2.4 million young people have taken part in MFY events over the years. Enter for the 2013 season from 20 August 2012 at mfy.org.uk

MFY Music Mentors attend every festival. Their role is to listen to each performance and provide focused, constructive feedback that will help each group continue their musical journey. Since MFY began, musicians such as Evelyn Glennie, Nigel Kennedy, Michael Collins, Jason Yarde, Thomas Adès, Simone Rebello, John Harle, Gary Barlow, Ian Belton, Matthew Barley, Clio Gould, Jules Buckley, Lucy Shaw, Roger Argente and Kit Downes have taken part. Today, MFY continues to provide performance opportunities for young people across the UK. Every year over 100,000 participants get to perform live, witness exhilarating concerts, take part in inspirational workshops and gain valuable advice from our team of Music Mentors. None of this would be possible without the support of our sponsors and the generosity of individual donors. THANK YOU.

PIECE ON A POSTCARD

Sponsored by Vivendi Create Joy Supported by PRS for Music Foundation Piece on a Postcard is a rhythmical piece designed to engage anyone in a musical activity. It’s been written by MFY Music Mentor Rob Farrer who is a percussionist and Head of Percussion at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Piece on a Postcard demonstrates how to approach rhythmical building blocks in composition and has been written so that anyone can take part, whatever their musical experience. There are five grooves which can be used together or on their own, as a clapping based piece or with instruments. The notes with stems down should produce a low tone - you might do this by patting your stomach. The notes with stems up should produce a high sound such as a hand clap. Have a go, have fun and send us your performances of Piece on a Postcard soon! Download Piece on a Postcard at mfy.org.uk/thesoundvault

JIGSAW JAM

Sponsored by Vivendi Create Joy Supported by PRS for Music Foundation & Kevin Mayhew Publishers Written by composer and MFY Music Mentor Sarah Watts. Jigsaw Jam is a collection of short ensemble pieces for beginner instrumentalists. These can be played together in any order (like a jigsaw), to make one big piece. The main piece is The Sky. This has parts for every instrument that is likely to be taught in any classroom or instrumental group. It can be performed with any combination of instruments along with a piano or CD accompaniment. The parts have been written as much as possible using the first three notes learned on each instrument. There is also a vocal part that can be added. The other pieces that can be added to the Jigsaw are for each instrumental section on their own - strings, woodwind, brass, recorders, pitched percussion, ocarinas, harmonicas, guitars and ukuleles. The pieces can be played from music, or learned by ear. Jigsaw Jam can be played by any size of ensemble. It is a fun piece to celebrate the first achievements of learning an instrument.

FLANFAYRE

Sponsored by EIS Supported by PRS for Music Foundation Written by Stephen Deazley, composer, music director and animateur, this fanfare received its world premiere at National Festival Scotland on 8 June in Perth. Although specifically written for National Festival Scotland, the Flanfayre will have a second outing at National Festival Birmingham! Here’s a little note from Stephen… “It’s not really a fanfare (oops). It’s more like a large cheesy flan full of different flavours, although you will still hear one or two heraldic sounding parps. I decided to set myself a challenge to write the piece in 100 bars, but ended up with 102! I am however blaming my imagined Highland pipers having to strike up their drones just before the final tune - it added exactly two bars! I really enjoyed writing this - I hope you enjoy playing it. A big thank you to MFY. What a delicious treat for me.” — Stephen Deazley deazley.org Download Flanfayre at mfy.org.uk/thesoundvault

Q&A: EMILY BARKER Hailing from Bridgetown, Western Australia, Emily Barker is a compelling songwriter with a gift for weaving melody and words. Together with her band The Red Clay Halo, she has recorded three albums, dazzled audiences at music festivals and her song, Nostalgia, become the Bafta-winning theme tune to the BBC One drama Wallander starring British actor Kenneth Branagh. February 2011 saw the release of Almanac, attracting airplay on BBC 6 Music, Radio 2 and Radio 4’s Loose Ends. A stream of sold-out UK tour dates followed, culminating in a rapturously received show at London’s St Giles-in-the-Fields church at which Almanac was performed in its entirety including a stunning, stark version of Pause. This song has since been used as the theme tune to the BBC2 noir thriller, The Shadow Line. The band’s albums are entirely self-financed and released on Emily’s own imprint Everyone Sang. How did you get into music and when did you start writing your own material? I started singing at a very early age due to my mum being able to play the guitar. She would sit the four of us kids down and teach us how to harmonise to old folk tunes. I began playing classical piano when I was 15 and also started singing in the high school band at the same time. When I was 18, I got a guitar and taught myself how to play. I immediately started writing songs as I found the guitar was such a great tool for this. You grew up in Western Australia. Are there any notable differences in the music scene there compared to the UK? Definitely, there are many! For starters there are not very many people there so gigs and opportunities aren’t as abundant. Having said that, there is a very good infrastructure for musicians and due to the isolation, Western Australian musicians tend to have a unique flavour to their style. The UK is saturated with bands and gig-goers which means there are so many opportunities but consequently there’s also lots of competition. I love performing in both places. Your song Nostalgia was used as the theme tune for the TV show Wallander and Pause was the title track to the hit BBC drama The Shadow Line which won Best TV Soundtrack at the 2012 Ivor Novello Awards. How did that come about and how important is it to receive exposure to new audiences in this way? I was very honoured to have these songs picked up by composer Martin Phipps. He worked them into the theme tunes and closing credits on both of these crime-thriller BBC dramas. Martin had seen us playing at a garden party in Tufnell Park, London and loved the songs. It’s provided us with so much exposure and for an independent artist, this is something we could never have afforded to pay for, so it has been wonderful! You regularly collaborate with other musicians and artists. What do you enjoy about taking this creative approach to your work? It gives you insight into how others work and opens you up creatively. It’s very easy to stick to the same patterns of work but when you collaborate you really have to be open to different ways of being creative.

Folk in a Box sounds fun! Tell us more! There is one performer, one listener, one song, performed in a beautiful, sound-proofed wooden box which travels around the country. Find out more at www.folkinabox.net What’s the best advice anyone ever gave you? They asked me “What do I define as success?” This has been invaluable to me. It’s very important to acknowledge your achievements as they come in rather than keep moving on, without pausing to realise what you’ve accomplished. It’s also important to keep redefining what you regard as “success.” What’s next for you? Are you gigging over the summer, any festivals lined up? We’re just about to head to Norfolk for eight days of pre-production (arranging instrumentation) for the next album which we’re then recording in Glasgow. Then festivals commence! We’ve got our whole year mapped out really and also the beginning of 2013 so it’s all very exciting. www.emily-barker.com

Q&A: BARNEY HARWOOD

Children’s TV presenter Barney Harwood was born in Blackpool and was bitten by the performing bug at a tender age. He performed in a local cabaret band for four years before his musical talents caught the attention of Take That’s manager and he joined the boyband Goal aged 17. Barney made the move into presenting two years later on the popular music show Planet Pop. He then joined CBBC as a presenter on Smile and in 2007, won the Bafta for Best Children’s TV Presenter. Barney joined the Blue Peter team in January 2011. Barney's talents extend off screen as well as on. A keen musician, he composed the theme tune to Bear Behaving Badly and contributed to some of the music on Prank Patrol. As well as television, Barney is no stranger to the stage. He has presented concerts for the BBC Proms at London's Royal Albert Hall, is a regular presenter of MFY’s Primary Prom concerts and he recently appeared in pantomime in Bromley, Kent. Barney's first love is music and he has been playing the piano and guitar since the age of six. How did you begin your career as a presenter? I was in a band when I was 17 and we secured a publishing deal to write pop music. To raise the profile of our band I joined a music show on Channel 4 called Planet Pop! I enjoyed it so much that I decided that presenting would be a great career! Many of the skills needed as a performer are similar to those needed for presenting. What components do you think make up a great performance? A performance has to be engaging! With music it's easy because the pieces of music were written by talented composers who thought about everything! There’s drama, intrigue and excitement! That's why my favorite composer is Prokofiev, although Stravinsky was pretty special too! You’ve got experience of presenting concerts, live TV and radio. do you have to modify your presenting style for these and do you enjoy one more than the other? I enjoy them all the same! It doesn’t really matter what I am doing. I love my job, but I especially enjoy working with a live audience because I can actually talk to them rather than trying to communicate through a glass lens!

What advice would you give to anyone that is interested in becoming a presenter? Don't do it! Save yourself!!! RUN FOR YOUR LLLLIIIIVIVVVVVES!!! No, seriously, it's brilliant! Just be yourself and have fun! Remember every moment because the more you do, the more quickly time starts to move! A measure of success is how many memories you have at the end of your career. If you can’t remember much, you didn’t enjoy yourself! Life is for living! You are also a musician and songwriter. How did you begin your musical journey? I've been playing music for as long as I can remember. It's just something that has always made me feel good. I started when I was four by trying to play 'When the Saints go Marching in' with my nose (I always try to do things differently) and it snowballed from there! I get home, put on my headphones and fly head first into a world where no one can reach me! It's like an escape! I have a publishing deal so I now write music for TV and film too. Who are your musical heroes? So many! (Barney takes deep breath). Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Keith Emerson, John Lord, Rick Wakeman, Billy Joel, Ben Folds, Rufus Wainwright, Prokofiev, Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stevie Wonder, Rod, Jane and Freddy from Rainbow! What's the last album you downloaded or bought? I just bought Titanium by David Guetta! What a tune!

Q&A: KATE SELF For the 2012 National Festival Birmingham, MFY has teamed up with Ikon and their Slow Boat project. Across five days of the festival young musicians will work with folk musician and composer Joe Broughton, developing their own original material as they journey along the waterways of Birmingham. Kate Self is Learning Co-ordinator for Ikon Gallery and is the Slow Boat Project Manager. Who are you and what do you do? I studied Fine Art Painting at Winchester School of Art, completed a Teaching Certificate for Post-Compulsory education at Wolverhampton University and most recently a Masters Degree in Contemporary Art Theory at Goldsmiths. I have worked as a tutor for Foundation and Undergraduate courses in FE and HE capacity in addition to five years experience working within gallery education at the Design Museum and Tate Modern in London and Ikon Gallery in Birmingham. After completing my Masters in 2009 I returned to Ikon to work as Learning Co-ordinator. I work a lot with groups that visit the gallery and I currently manage the Slow Boat Programme. Can you explain what the Ikon Youth Programme is, who they are and what they do? The Ikon Youth Programme (IYP) is a group of young people aged 1519 from Birmingham who meet regularly to make artwork, meet other young people, host events and develop their own projects. I set up the youth programme back in 2009 as an initial nine month-long project with funding from Birmingham City Council, yet it quickly became apparent that the programme had a lot of potential. In 2010 we secured funding from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and turned IYP into a three year initiative (2011–13). In three years we have worked in-depth with 35 young people that have formed a core group of IYP members. Recruited from within and around Birmingham their projects have so far included working with artists who make photography, installation, performance, print and design. IYP members have also travelled and worked with young people’s programmes beyond the region in Bristol, Milton Keynes and London. Where did the idea for Slow Boat originate from? Slow Boat was conceived as the means of providing IYP with a space of their own. As Birmingham is surrounded by canals, and Ikon has a rich history of dynamic off-site programming, the idea of taking on a boat seemed natural, and had the additional advantage of being mobile. The Aaron Manby was commandeered in summer 2011, generously leased from Sandwell Council for the duration of the project. Converted by Birmingham-based designers Queen & Crawford, the interior of the boat is flexible and can host meetings, seat 30 people for workshops, screen films and function as a moving gallery.

What interested you about collaborating with MFY? Collaboration and partnership working is really important to our work with young people. Over the last year we have developed a shared interest in film and music as the boat acts as an unusual floating venue. We became aware of the work of MFY around the time of last year’s festival and are delighted that after months of planning Slow Boat will open for five days to host a series of workshops. The work of MFY is truly inspiring; travelling around the country leading regional events throughout the year, engaging with thousands of young people with all kinds of music. Being involved in the festival which is taking place in our home city presents us with an unmissable opportunity. We hope to make recordings of the music made during the workshops and feature some of this on our internet radio station we are designing for the boat. What does the rest of summer have in store for Slow Boat? This summer Slow Boat will make its longest journey to date, cruising for five weeks from Birmingham to London and back again along the length of the Grand Union canal. This trip is the result of a major collaboration between Ikon’s IYP and Chisenhale Gallery’s youth programme Propeller. We will be making stop-offs along the way, working with other canal-side organisations, regularly blogging and broadcasting from our radio station whilst onboard. For more information about this project please contact k.self@ikon-gallery.co.uk and visit www.ikonslowboat.com

Slow Boat is now the name of both the boat and the three year project of working with young people.

Q&A: PAUL MACALINDIN

In the 1990s Paul MacAlindin gave countless premieres of young composers’ work, both in orchestral concerts and with top ensembles. At this time he was also assisting Sir Peter Maxwell davies which brought him in contact with some great British works and with orchestras such as the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic and BBC Philharmonic. Since 2001, Paul has worked with the British Council on groundbreaking projects, such as The Turn of The Tide with the Croatian Radio Orchestra and conducting the Armenian Philharmonic. In 2008, Paul read about the proposed National Youth Orchestra of Iraq, immediately contacted the British Council and has been musically directing the Orchestra since 2009. Tell us about your musical background. I grew up in Scotland in the town of Dunfermline, where I involved myself in many music, theatre and ballet projects. Through the Carnegie Youth Theatre, I became Musical Director for one show, the Dracula Spectacula and got hooked on telling people what to do! My university education in Surrey, York and Michigan State taught me the foundations of conducting. While at Surrey University I formed my first ensemble, Seventh Cosmic Wind and performed Pierrot Lunaire at the Edinburgh Fringe at Tic Toc at Marcos. Twenty years later, I'm returning this year with the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq (NYOI) for my second visit to the Fringe. How did you first hear about the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq and what motivated you to get involved? I was eating fish and chips in the Barony Bar in Edinburgh and there was a press report about the NYOI in a copy of the Glasgow Herald which was lying on a restaurant table. I immediately saw huge potential and thought this was culturally an incredibly exciting project. Bringing Zuhal Sultan's musical friends together with the operational and financial capacity of the British Council would be incredibly rewarding and challenging and would require us to solve many problems in non conventional, innovative ways.

How do the young musicians you work with approach their musicmaking and what motivates them? They are motivated by instrumental music. It's that simple. Some used music during the war to shut out reality. Others to build some kind of educational base for their talents as traditional singers, others because they already played in ensembles such as the Kurdish String Orchestra or the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra. Can you describe some of the challenges that the young people in the orchestra face? Physically getting an instrument is important and tough. I'm sure that many talented young musicians don't ever get access. Those that do are pretty much left with poor quality instruments and without any teaching support, so they download what they can from the internet and use YouTube to coach themselves. It is the general consensus of the tutors that music teaching in Iraq isn’t particularly high. Good quality teachers did exist in Iraq, but fled or were killed in 2003. What is the most important message that the young people would want to share with those taking part in the MFY season? Music reconciles and creates a strong bond of family within the orchestra. Your background is irrelevant, as long as you can play and contribute. It's also about communicating the positive side of a culture to the world, and so the elements of cultural diplomacy combined with mobility, both incredibly powerful themes for young musicians today, are at the NYOI's forefront. With the case of Iraq, no country has been so intensively reported in the last ten years and yet we still know nothing about it. So NYOI players subvert various editorial agendas simply by being who they are and doing what they do. The power lies in the simplicity. The orchestra performed at the Bonn festival in Germany in 2011. What's next on the horizon? We're planning a visit to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe on 26 August and a concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s Southbank on 28 August. Following that we have international plans until 2014. How do we find out more and how can people support the NYOI? People can visit our website www.nyoiraq.com with links to facebook, youtube and twitter. You can also donate to the virgin site uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/NYOIraq and come and support us in the performances!

TUESDAY 3 JULY JUNIOR & SENIOR CHOIRS, ENSEMBLES JUNIOR CHOIRS SYMPHONY HALL 10:30-19:45 PRESENTER Michelle Holloway MUSIC MENTORS Leonora davies Leonora started learning the piano aged eight and began learning guitar at college after her father brought her one from Spain. Singing has formed a large part of her life and is now probably her first love. Her mother was a singer and teacher and the sound of her voice could be heard all round the house. Alongside formal lessons, Leonora also sang in school choirs and folk clubs in Barnsley and Wakefield. Leonora trained as a teacher, teaching music and dance in both primary and secondary schools. Later as a music inspector in London she enjoyed organising and leading choirs and ensembles as well as being able to support colleagues and teachers in the classroom. Now as a freelance consultant she continues to work with teachers and children on a wider range of initiatives. Sam dunkley Sam works as a community musician, running projects across the country for schools, prisons, councils, theatres and various other groups, specialising in large scale singing projects, songwriting and transition in schools. He also runs Performing Arts etc, a company which creates fun and exciting music theatre projects for young people. Sam has conducted at the Royal Albert Hall for the MFY Schools Prom, Birmingham’s Symphony Hall for the Sing for All Chorus, he is conductor of Beverley Early Music Festival Schools Chorus and he conducts a community choir. Sam’s first instrument is voice, he also plays drums, guitar, bass and piano.

SENIOR CHOIRS TOWN HALL 10:30-20:00

PRESENTER Will Horner MUSIC MENTORS Phil Bateman Phil had a love of music from a very early age, starting piano lessons at seven, flute at eight and saxophone at thirteen. He spent most of his youth singing and writing songs and performed in a band and a school pop group throughout his teenage years. Aged seventeen Phil wrote a full length musical which he staged and directed before he went on to study piano and voice at Birmingham Conservatoire where he was an enthusiastic member of the Guild Musical Theatre Group. After university, Phil began teaching music in primary schools and drama schools, as well as working as a singer and pianist in

cabaret bars. He then started as a freelance Musical Director and Actor/Musician performing in fringe venues in London, in regional theatres and in national tours. Aged 32, Phil had the opportunity to work as Musical Supervisor, writing vocal and dance arrangements and all additional music, for the hit West End musical Our House, with songs by Madness. This experience was a steep learning curve as it was Phil’s first time working in the West End and conducting a band in a pit. The show won the Olivier award for best New Musical in 2003. Phil then went on to be the Musical Director of Billy Elliot the musical working with Elton John to create the show, which he conducted for the first year of the run. It won the Olivier for Best New Musical in 2006. Phil continues to work as a Musical Director, on both traditional shows and on creating new pieces of musical theatre. He is currently preparing the score for the musical of Bridget Jones, with songs by Lily Allen, due to open in the West End in November 2012. Gillian dibden Gillian started her musical education with piano lessons from the age of seven and also enjoyed singing in her junior school choir. An inspirational music teacher came to her school when she was fourteen and Gillian became really passionate about all kinds of music and it became an enormous part of her life. Gillian studied piano and cello at the Royal College of Music and on graduation went into her dream career of teaching music in school. Here she found that the most exciting skill to explore was choral training and conducting. The joy of leading and inspiring young people through singing and helping them to fulfil their potential has “been like a good book” that she can’t put down! Personal highlights have included a Churchill Fellowship in Choral Music, enabling travel and study in South Africa and Finland, being named Sainsbury’s Choral Director of the Year in 2002 and bringing groups to perform at the MFY Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall.

JUNIOR & SENIOR CHOIRS ADRIAN BOULT HALL 10:30-20:05

PRESENTER Anna Flannagan & Tim Spires MUSIC MENTORS Mark Griffiths Mark learned his first music in the local church choir where his father sang and his mother played the organ. The rest of his musical training revolved around church music (he was lucky enough to sing in some really good choirs who toured all over the world) and in county youth choirs where he first took part in an MFY festival. Along the way, he became quite a good French horn player and rather a disappointing pianist. He began his career as a singer, working

with London’s opera choruses and the choirs of all its great churches. However, he began to work regularly with the Berkshire Youth Choir during their period of great competitive success, and soon found himself more and more in demand as a choral conductor and workshop leader. In 2003 he became Musical Director of Coro, a prize-winning London-based chamber choir with whom he has toured internationally, commissioned new works and recorded three CDs. Mark has been a Guest Conductor for well-known small choirs like Chantage and large choirs like The Philharmonia Chorus. He conducts choirs of all sizes for the Junior Department of Trinity College of Music and recently he has taken on the Choral Conducting seminar for the University of Winchester. Mark’s personal musical highlights include conducting a full performance of Rachmaninov’s Vespers and winning the Tallinn International Choral Competition with Coro. Adey Grummet Adey is a soprano who works hard to defy classification. Although she has a dim, dark past in shows, dance and straight theatre, she is mostly involved in contemporary classical music these days. She has created more that a dozen roles in new operas for contemporary composers including John Woolrich, Julian Grant, Stephen McNeff and Richard Thomas. Adey sings in the fusion vocal group The Shout with Orlando Gough and works all over Europe as a vocal animateur, most recently leading projects for the BBC and ENO Baylis. She sat on the board of the Society for the Promotion of New Music for seven years before its recent merger into Sound And Music. She is a writer, lyricist and conductor, directing her own vocal ensemble The Curate’s Egg.

ENSEMBLES SPONSOREd BY MUSICIANS’ UNION RECITAL HALL 10:15-20:05

PRESENTER Alistair Mcdonald MUSIC MENTORS damien Harron Damien is a percussionist, composer and educator from Northern Ireland. As a member of the prize-winning BackBeat Percussion Quartet, he has performed many of his own works both nationally and internationally and his compositions have featured in many of Britain’s festivals. Whether as a performer or composer, Damien has a strong interest in globally diverse art forms. His recent work includes Moving Bodies for Chamber Orchestra with prepared feet (all performers have a thin length of wood strapped to one foot) and Sangam for solo tabla and percussion quartet. Damien studied performance and composition at the University of Huddersfield where he gained a first class

degree and was awarded the Ricordi prize for the performance of contemporary music and the Governor’s prize for achievement before continuing his studies at the Conservatoire National de Region de Rueil Malmaison in Paris. He has performed extensively throughout the UK and as far away as Zimbabwe, the USA and Japan. Specialising in the performance of contemporary music, Damien is a regular member of the groups Decibel and Black Hair and has also performed with many of Britain’s other leading ensembles and orchestras. In 2002 Damien was invited to direct the Japan Percussion Society Ensemble at a performance in the Philharmonic Hall, Osaka. He has appeared as a soloist at many venues and festivals playing virtuosic works that often incorporate elements of theatre. Also an experienced educator, Damien was artistic director of Yuva Sangeeth (Youth Music), an intercultural project run by the Asian arts organisation Kala Sangam in 2002. Sarah Watts Sarah was brought up in a very creative home. Her mother played jazz piano and had great ideas and her father drew cartoons, painted and made models out of cardboard while listening to Radio 3. Encouragement in childhood from broadminded people gave her the confidence to pursue the things that inspired her. Sarah studied at the Royal College of Music in London and plays the bassoon, saxophone and flute, but is best known now as a composer. Her published works include the Razzamajazz series, Band in a Book, Red Hot Song Library, Red Hot Recorder Tutor and Class Act. All these are published by Kevin Mayhew Ltd. Sarah has been very influenced by the Dankworth Allmusic philosophy and now plays a big part in encouraging this broadminded musical thinking as Artistic Director of National Youth Music Camps. She enjoys presenting workshops and inset days in this country and abroad. Her desire is to write music that is useful, enjoyable and accessible. She believes we are the product of the people who influence us and music educators have a great responsibility to encourage and inspire.

WEDNESDAY 4 JULY ORCHESTRAS, ENSEMBLES ORCHESTRAS SYMPHONY HALL 10:30-19:55 PRESENTER Sam dunkley MUSIC MENTORS Eric Tebbett Eric began playing the trumpet at the age of seven and was a member of The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for three years. After being awarded a Preston-Simpson Scholarship he entered the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 1970, where he studied singing, piano and trumpet. Eric has performed extensively in Europe and the USA, as well as giving solo performances on both radio and television. For five years he was a member of The International Staff Band of The Salvation Army, before playing with the celebrated GUS Band for three years. Recently Eric has worked as Chorus Director and Assistant Conductor for Central Festival Opera and he has sung the Evangelist in both Bach’s St. John and St. Matthew Passions and appeared with Ely Cathedral Choir and Bath Camerata. Neil Valentine Neil began his musical life as a violinist, until he grew really tall and at age fourteen switched to the viola, never to look back. He studied at York University and Trinity College of Music and was a member of Southbank Sinfonia in 2007. During his time with the orchestra he discovered creative music workshops and has since delivered music projects and workshops with, amongst others, the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Spitalfields Music Festival, BBC Proms, and Wigmore Hall. Neil has worked with primary and secondary schools, nurseries, care homes and community groups, with Barnardos, Carers Lewisham, Royal London Hospital, Greenwich Mind and Wiltons Music Hall. He is also heavily involved with Tower Hamlets Arts and Music Education Service, where he conducts at the Saturday Music Centre. He still plays his viola and is currently studying with jazz violinist Julian Ferraretto.

WORKSHOpS & EVENTS

PRESENTER Will Horner MUSIC MENTORS Tony Harris A keyboard player, percussionist and composer, Tony first got into music at primary school as a master recorder player (or so he liked to think). He progressed to being a very bad clarinettist until he thankfully left it on a bus and took up the piano. He seemed to handle the keyboard quite well and after studying music at university he qualified as a secondary school teacher. He has since worked in primary and secondary schools, FE colleges, Birmingham Conservatoire and on the education team for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He is now Senior Lecturer in Music Education at Nottingham Trent University. Tony is inspired most by working with young musicians and has contributed to the education programmes of some of the UK’s leading organisations, festivals and orchestras. An active composer and performer, he is founder member of the experimental duo The Pound Shop Boys with whom he has toured nationally. He has also performed with the Cornelius Cardew Ensemble, is resident percussionist with the CoMA East Midlands ensemble and records solo material under the name of Boring Phil. Tony is also co-author of The GCSE Composition Course, published by Peters Edition and his major new book, The Legacy of Cornelius Cardew, is published by Ashgate later this year.

PRESENTER Michelle Holloway MUSIC MENTORS John Evans John is a professional session guitarist, composer, songwriter and arranger who has played for Ray Davies, Chris Difford, Liam Bailey, Marti Pellow and The Divine Comedy. John has also appeared on soundtracks for the BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 4 films and has arranged music for various ensembles including the BBC Ulster Orchestra and Sinead O’Connor. John is also a writer/performer for Roxbury Music and has played various West End shows including Billy Elliot and Jersey Boys. John also teaches A level composition and music technology, the pre-professional jazz and pop ensembles and the BTEC 1st diploma in Music at Sussex Downs College. damien Harron Damien is a percussionist, composer and educator from Northern Ireland. Damien studied performance and composition at the University of Huddersfield where he gained a first class degree and was awarded the Ricordi prize for the performance of contemporary music and the Governor’s prize for achievement before continuing his studies at the Conservatoire National de Region de Rueil Malmaison in Paris.

THURSDAY 5 JULY 2012 WIND BANDS, TRADITIONAL & INTERNATIONAL, CHAMBER MUSIC, AMPLIFIED

40 | NATIONAL FESTIVAL BIRMINGHAM 2012

WIND BANDS SYMPHONY HALL 10:30-20:40 PRESENTER Sam dunkley MUSIC MENTORS Andy Grappy Andy is a freelance tuba player and has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, The Philharmonia, BBC Symphony and Concert Orchestras and has played on many film and TV scores. Andy has also worked with many leading jazz and world music artists including John Dankworth, The Jazz Warriors, Lester Bowie, Hermeto Pascoal, Sam River, Jason Moran, Courtney Pine and The Grand Union Orchestra. Andy played in the Musical Chicago for ten years and since leaving has worked with artists as diverse as Tom Jones, Damon Albarn, Bellowhead and Massive Attack. Andy is also Head of STAX Music Centre in Southwark, London. Keith Hewson Keith started playing the piano aged seven and his musical career developed from there. Piano is his main instrument and he pursued singing whilst at music college. Keith also plays guitar and can manipulate most brass instruments although he would probably say that his favourite instrument is the conductor’s baton! After leaving school he studied music at the Royal Northern College of Music and then Leeds University. He started teaching in 1972 and retired in 2008. Throughout his teaching career he was constantly involved in the development of school orchestras, brass bands, wind bands and choirs. Chamber music of all types and styles was also very high on his list of musical activities. On a personal level he has always enjoyed playing jazz piano at a professional level and for pure relaxation. In 2002 Keith was voted Classic FM Music Teacher of the Year and was given positions on the Specialist Schools Expert Panel and the government’s Music and Dance Scheme Group.

TRADITIONAL & INTERNATIONAL ADRIAN BOULT HALL 10:30-19:55 PRESENTER Tom Chapman MUSIC MENTORS damien Harron Damien is a percussionist, composer and educator from Northern Ireland. As a member of the prize-winning BackBeat Percussion Quartet, he has performed many of his own works both nationally and internationally. His compositions have featured in many of Britain’s festivals. Damien’s recent work includes ‘Moving Bodies’ for Chamber Orchestra with ‘prepared feet’ (all performers have a thin length of wood strapped to one foot) and Sangam for solo tabla and percussion quartet. Whether as a performer or composer, Damien has a strong interest in globally diverse art forms. He has performed extensively throughout the UK and as far away as Zimbabwe, the USA and Japan. Specialising in the performance of contemporary music, Damien is a regular member of the groups Decibel and Black Hair, and has also performed with many of Britain’s other leading ensembles and orchestras. Andy Mellon Andy started learning the piano aged four and the trumpet aged nine. From that point on he couldn’t imagine pursuing anything other than music. Andy was fortunate enough to win a scholarship to the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music which further established his goal to be a professional musician. As well as playing trumpet and piano, Andy is also a composer and musical director. He started his career as a musician who was rooted in the western classical tradition, playing in orchestras and performing recitals. He soon started getting asked to play in more diverse groups and became more involved in theatre, commercial and world music. This led to him playing in a wide range of settings, from the orchestra pits of a musical, to backing a pop act to travelling to exotic countries playing Algerian Rai music. Andy also started teaching trumpet and piano in local schools and thoroughly enjoyed witnessing young musicians developing their skills. Some of his most treasured musical memories include performing the Haydn Trumpet Concerto whilst at college, playing at his first ever BBC Prom, performing in Hyde Park to over 100,000 people and the first time he heard one of his pieces performed. Andy also plays trumpet with the award winning folk band Bellowhead and is an Artist in Residence at Southbank Centre.

CHAMBER MUSIC RECITAL HALL 10:15-20:30 PRESENTERS Will Horner & Michelle Holloway MUSIC MENTORS douglas Mitchell After studying at the Royal Academy of Music, Douglas joined the clarinet section of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1992, the youngest member of the orchestra at that time. He remained there for the next eighteen years, and was appointed co-principal in 2004. Aside from concerts, recordings and tours with the orchestra he was involved with its very busy education department, taking part in projects in schools, hospitals, prisons and hospices in the UK and abroad. He left the RPO in 2010, and now freelances with all of the UK’s major orchestras, as well as pursuing his other activities away from the concert platform. He is a regular visitor in London’s music colleges, and this year has coached the youth orchestras of Ulster, Iraq and Great Britain. He is also a composer and improviser, and has been part of collaborations and projects with Robert Mitchell, Damon Albarn, Matthew Bourne and Sting. Highlights of his work abroad have included education projects in the United States, China, Kazakhstan and Iraq. Gwyn Parry-Jones Gwyn has loved music from a young age and took up the piano then the bassoon and also briefly trained as a singer. Gwyn played in orchestras and ensembles in his local area while at school and joined every available group he could find. He continued his studies at Manchester University, where he co-founded the university chamber orchestra before continuing with his bassoon and piano studies at the Royal Northern College of Music. Gywn taught music at Millfield School for a couple of years before returning to Manchester, where he played with the Hallé and BBC Philharmonic. He also sang with the BBC Northern Singers and conducted both the Melandra Ensemble and Manchester Camerata. After a period teaching at Salford University College, Gywn moved to Reading to take up an academic post at Reading University where he was head of Music Activities until his retirement in 2006. He continues to perform, mainly with The Five Winds and ZigZag and conducts both within the university and outside. Other teaching experiences include the universities of Oxford and Keele in the UK and Gothenburg in Sweden.

AMpLIFIED SPONSOREd BY ROCKSCHOOL HMV INSTITUTE 16:30-21:00 PRESENTER Will Horner MUSIC MENTORS John Evans John is a professional session guitarist, composer, songwriter and arranger who has played for Ray Davies, Chris Difford, Liam Bailey, Marti Pellow and The Divine Comedy. Jamie Trowell Jamie is a London-based freelance drummer and percussionist whose career has entailed a wide variety of jazz, pop and theatre gigs all over the world. Having become fascinated by the drums after attending a local Musicians’ Union big band concert in Ipswich aged eight, he acquired a second hand drum kit and was soon involved in as much music-making as possible with local jazz, funk and rock bands as well as orchestras and choirs. Having gained a BA Hons music degree from the University of York in 2000, Jamie has enjoyed a varied musical journey as a performer which has incorporated tours and residencies in Europe, America, Australia, the Middle-East, Far-East and the UK. Recent highlights include a residency at the Marina Bay Sands hotel theatre in Singapore with the show Thriller Live and a series of gigs in cities such as Lisbon, Istanbul and Delhi playing in the house band for the World Travel Award ceremonies, as well as concerts at the Royal Festival Hall and Ronnie Scott’s in London with various jazz and Latin artists. Jamie is a keen educator and has taught drums on the National Diploma and BA Hons degree courses at the Colchester Institute of Performing Arts since 2004. He also spent several years working for the Live Music Now scheme with the Sahara Jazz Quartet and regularly works for Heart n Soul, a South London arts organisation with learning disability culture at its heart.

FRIDAY 6 JULY BRASS BANDS, SCHOOL JAZZ, AMPLIFIED BRASS BANDS TOWN HALL 10:15-20:40

SCHOOL JAZZ ADRIAN BOULT HALL 10:30-20:25

PRESENTER Sam dunkley MUSIC MENTORS Keith Hewson Keith started playing the piano aged seven and his musical career developed from there. In 2002 Keith was voted Classic FM Music Teacher of the Year and was given positions on the Specialist Schools Expert Panel and the governments Music and Dance Scheme Group. Eric Tebbett Eric began playing the trumpet at the age of seven and was a member of The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for three years.

PRESENTERS Will Horner & Tom Chapman MUSIC MENTORS Malcolm Earle-Smith Malcolm’s performing career as a trombonist and vocalist spans from early jazz to contemporary jazz styles. He has worked with many artists including Digby Fairweather, Jack Parnell, John Dankworth, Henry Lowther, Andrea Vicari and Martin Speake. He has also worked with soul artists Martha Reeves and Ronnie Spector. More recently, he has recorded and toured extensively with Bryan Ferry. In 1996 he released his first quartet album Lyric Trombone. His present quintet Vox City5, features a double vocal frontline. The group explores jazz singing through arrangements of standard tunes, through using voices in purely instrumental terms and through vocal improvisation. As a teacher, Malcolm has been involved in primary, secondary and adult sectors as well as with all the major music colleges. He also teaches for the University of Glamorgan and Wavendon Jazz Summer Schools, runs workshops for ABRSM and is Senior Lecturer in Jazz at Trinity College of Music, London. Malcolm Edmonstone Malcolm is a jazz pianist and arranger, born in Perth, Scotland in 1980. In 1998 he moved to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he is now Deputy Head of Jazz Studies. Having gained Bachelors and Masters degrees, Malcolm continues to forge a career as a modern musician, working as a pianist, educator, arranger and musical director in many high profile situations. Whilst studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama he was called on by Laurie Holloway to cover the piano chair on an international tour with his wife, the late jazz legend Marion Montgomery. Since then Malcolm has continued to work with Laurie on various projects, including the first three series of the BBC 1 show Strictly Come Dancing, where he played piano and arranged a significant portion of the music. During this time Malcolm was writing prolifically and having his arrangements performed live on television to audiences upwards of 10 million. At 21, he met Jacqui Dankworth and soon became her Musical Director. Together they have toured the world and been involved in numerous recording projects, including albums Detour Ahead and Back to You.

In 2009, Malcolm had the honour of working alongside the late Sir John Dankworth on an album with Jacqui. Malcolm is a member of Mike Walker’s Madhouse band and has played with many of the UK’s leading jazz musicians, including Mark Lockheart, Stan Sulzmann and Iain Dixon. At the 19th meeting of the International Association of Schools of Jazz, Dave Liebman invited Malcolm to play in his only appearance during that conference. As a session musician, Malcolm’s extensive work ranges from recording for BBC Radio 3 with conductor Lorin Maazel to playing on live television with Tony Bennett. He has twice been commissioned by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland. Education has always been a large part of Malcolm’s life – as well as five years as Co-Director of NYJOS and the same time as a Professor at GSMD, he has held many visiting teaching positions, including stints at Royal Academy of Music, Trinity College of Music, Middlesex University and Birmingham Conservatoire. He is often employed by ABRSM to work with classical peripatetic teachers exploring jazz music.

John is also a writer/performer for Roxbury Music and has played various West End shows including Billy Elliot and Jersey Boys. John also teaches A Level composition and music technology, the pre-professional jazz and pop ensembles and the BTEC 1st diploma in Music at Sussex Downs College. Jamie Trowell Jamie is a London-based freelance drummer and percussionist whose career has entailed a wide variety of jazz, pop and theatre gigs all over the world. Having become fascinated by the drums after attending a local Musicians’ Union big band concert in Ipswich aged eight, he acquired a second hand drum kit and was soon involved in as much music-making as possible with local jazz, funk and rock

bands as well as orchestras and choirs. NATIONAL YOUTH MUSIC ORGANISATIONS (NYMO)

MUSIC FOR YOUTH is an umbrella NYMO organisation. We’re delighted that the NYMO’s will be at the festival once again inspiring MFY performers in a series of workshops and special events.

NATIONAL YOUTH BRASS BAND OF GREAT BRITAIN

NYMOs bring talented young musicians together, on a national level, for inspirational training and advanced ensemble performance opportunities. They include national orchestras, choirs and bands across a range of genres. Participation in NYMO activity is the pinnacle of many young musicians’ progression. The NYMO Fund sits proudly at the heart of Youth Music’s aim to encourage and nurture talent. It is one of our longest running funding programmes and supports outstanding opportunities for development, learning and progression into education and professional music making for young musicians, regardless of their financial circumstances. Set up in 2001, Youth Music’s NYMO Fund is financed by Arts Council England, the Music and Dance Scheme at the Department for Education and Youth Music. The NYMO fund covers a broad spectrum of musical genres from Western classical to South Asian classical and contemporary jazz to musical theatre. To find out more, including how to get involved, visit youthmusic.org.uk/nymo

NATIONAL CHILDREN’S ORCHESTRA

The NCO provides young people with a world-class foundation for orchestral performance and musicianship. We bring together hundreds of 7-13 year olds from across the country and offer them a life-changing experience – meeting like-minded people and being guided by top professional musicians. Established in 1978, the NCO has gone from strength to strength, building up an international reputation as an outstanding orchestra whose maturity belies the age of its members. The NCO has performed in a wide variety of concert venues, from the Royal Albert Hall in London to the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, and promises audiences an entertaining and uplifting performance. This year the orchestra even performed for the Queen as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations. NCO entry is by audition only and any child who plays an orchestral instrument, aged 7-13 years old on 31 December 2012 is eligible to apply. Bursaries are available and the NCO is committed to ensuring that any child who has the talent to join the Orchestra is able to take up their place, regardless of financial circumstances. nco.org.uk

NATIONAL YOUTH JAZZ COLLECTIVE

WHAT IS A NYMO?

Formed in 1952, The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain gives exceptionally gifted young brass instrumentalists, aged 12-18, the opportunity to perform advanced music and receive the highest quality teaching, care and help. As well as providing opportunities for young people to improve their musicianship and widen their musical horizons, the NYBB provides the music profession with the next generation of players. Residential courses, lasting for one week, are held twice a year. Under the direction of a team of internationally acclaimed music tutors and the Artistic Director, Bramwell Tovey, the band has intensive sectional and full band rehearsals daily. Students are often introduced to works they would not normally meet. The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain celebrates its 60th year in 2012 and will be appearing in the BBC Promenade Concert Series at the Royal Albert Hall. The National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain formed in 2004 is directed by Dr. Nicholas Childs, professional conductor of the Black Dyke Band. The NCBBGB stages one residential course per year in the summer and has produced exceptional performances, by brass instrumentalists aged 8-14. nybbgb.com

NATIONAL YOUTH CHOIRS OF GREAT BRITAIN

The National Youth Jazz Collective is a new and vibrant organisation that supports the creative and educational needs of young jazz improvisers aged 8-18 nationally across England. We work in partnership with music services, venues and arts organisations to develop bespoke programmes that make an impact regionally on jazz provision. We offer a range of activities from opportunities for young people to access jazz for the first time, to our annual National Summer School for the most gifted and talented young musicians (selected by audition), supported by continuing professional development for music leaders. We also offer advice and signposting for young jazz musicians and their leaders and support for emerging jazz graduates through the Young Ambassador scheme. Bursaries are available for all activities. Tutors include Issie Barratt (NYJC’s Founder and Artistic Director), Andrew Bain, Pete Churchill, Nic France, Dave Hassell, Mick Foster, Mark Hodgson, Nikki Iles, Mark Lockheart, Jeremy Price, Nick Smart, Martin Speake, Steve Watts and Mike Walker. NYJC welcomes jazz luminary Dave Holland as our President and we are delighted that Julian Joseph is a Trustee and one of our Vice Presidents. nyjc.co.uk

NATIONAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA

The National Youth Choirs of Great Britain actively upholds its mission of nurturing the exceptional musical talent of the young people of Great Britain by offering the very best musical provision from the country’s greatest directors, vocal tutors and collaborators. Originally set up as a single choir of 100 of the best young singers in the nation, NYCGB now provides the widest of musical experiences for over 750 young people aged 9-28. The educational structure comprises four Junior Choirs which provide opportunities for girls to join from the age of eleven and boys from the age of nine, two Training Choirs for singers aged 13-18, the National Youth Choir itself for singers aged 16-22 and a world-renowned chamber choir, Laudibus. The formation of the Training and Junior Choirs illustrates a key principle of our educational and musical approach; to be a youth organisation where outreach, education and artistry are all placed at the centre of our creative focus. The residential courses that form the backbone of our activity include intensive rehearsals, individual voice coaching and lessons in musicianship, all of which take place in an environment which develops both teamwork and leadership. nycgb.net

Every year, 165 talented teenagers from across Britain join forces to achieve something extraordinary. They reawaken classical music, reinvigorating great repertoire with fresh energy and resonance. They generate tremendous team spirit and remind us all of the awesome rewards that come from hard work, dedication and following their dreams. In the words of NYO member David Wong, ‘We learn so much from each other, and from our conductors, tutors and soloists who give us inspiration about music and new energy and enthusiasm to inject into whatever we do. I’ve made lifelong friendships here and the sheer excitement of the music we play is an experience in itself.’ You can see the NYO at Symphony Hall Birmingham on 1 August performing music that shows off their phenomenal talent - Messiaen's breathtaking music kaleidoscope Turangalîla-Symphonie. All seats are £5 for under 25s. Right now, you can also apply for a place in next year’s NYO. It’s free to apply and audition. Simply visit the NYO website to find out what’s required and complete the online application form by 23 July 2012. This could be your moment to join your national team! nyo.org.uk

Yamaha’s new Student Series

Three easy steps to choosing the right student instrument. 1

Real Value Comes From Quality Don’t confuse low price with good value. Real value comes from quality. A high grade starter instrument might cost more initially but will repay your investment by encouraging and rewarding the learning process.

Ask a Music Teacher Having witnessed some of their students struggling with inferior instruments, music teachers usually know best . They also prefer instruments that play in tune - instruments like Yamaha.

Consider the environment Yamaha brass and woodwind instruments produce a small carbon footprint and use lead-free solder. That’s great for our kids today and even better for their futures.

Yamaha’s new range of student brass and woodwind instruments represents better value than ever. Easy to play and individually crafted for perfect intonation, the Yamaha range ensures your child can make the best possible music start and have the greatest chance of fulfilling their dream.
