MFY National Festival 2015 | 3
WELCOME TO THE NATIONAL FESTIVAL 2015 It gives me huge pleasure to welcome you to this five day feast of live music, performed all over the city of Birmingham on large and small stages, both inside and out. The fabulous array of music on display during the week represents both local and national talent, as you will see from the constant flow of buses bringing young performers INTO Birmingham from all over the UK!
4 | MFY National Festival 2015
We at Music for Youth believe in celebrating the achievements of our young people and giving them opportunities to shine. As ever, we are not short of talent. With the help of this guide, I encourage you to visit as many of our stages as you can and catch that infectious buzz that goes hand in hand with the energy and enthusiasm of young people doing something they really enjoy and feeling good about it. This year's Festival is bigger and broader than ever with new collaborations, 8,000 performers across the five days, and a huge range of music to sample. So, put your walking shoes on.... it's time to explore. Judith Webster Chief Executive, Music for Youth
FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
This year, we are very pleased to be showcasing more home grown talent than ever before through partnerships with arts organisations based in Birmingham and the West Midlands. This rich mix of young artists will be best experienced through sampling both our main stages in Symphony Hall, Town Hall and the Adrian Boult Hall in Birmingham Conservatoire, and our informal pop-up stages as part of the Festival Fringe around the city. So, take a look at the festival map on pg. 38 to plan your route, and check out our Main Stage performances and the Festival Fringe programme each day to make sure you don't miss out. To help you along, here are a few highlights: All week... Our first ever Artist in Residence, Joe Broughton, will be with us every day of the Festival, either running workshops, mentoring performers or performing in the Festival Fringe. He will be working with young musicians to gather material and inspiration for a new commission, which will be performed at the MFY Proms at the Royal Albert Hall later in the year. Plus, catch him performing in the Interactive Zone at lunchtime on Tuesday and Wednesday. Our lively Festival Tent will be stationed in Centenary Square throughout the Festival week, with a massively diverse programme of performances on offer. Pop in to see what's on when you are passing by.
The ground floor foyer in Symphony Hall will be transformed into an Interactive Zone for the duration of the Festival, offering you an opportunity to try an instrument for the first time, be interviewed for Birmingham City University Festival Live, or chat to the many stall holders about the opportunities they have to offer you. Plus, pop up stages are sprinkled around the town every day of the Festival.
TUESDAY 07 JULY PG. 10
WEDNESDAY 08 JULY PG. 18
On Tuesday we welcome more than 20 fantastic choirs to the city. Our Fringe programme picks up the vocal theme and if you are wandering around Symphony Hall, you are likely to hear the strains of a vocal workshop led by tutors from the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. Plus, don’t miss an exciting concert of diverse orchestral music by the National Children’s Orchestra in the Festival Tent, Centenary Square.
Wednesday has quite a classical feel to the main stages, with smaller scale chamber groups, mixed ensembles and more choirs. We look forward to hosting Aldeburgh Music’s international singing project, ‘Friday Afternoons’, where young people are given the opportunity to sing specially-composed new music.
THURSDAY 09 JULY PG. 26
FRIDAY 10 JULY PG. 34
Thursday's Festival Fringe sees The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Commando Training Centre not only running workshops, but doing their own marching display in Centenary Square. Let's hope the sun is shining! In the Festival Tent make sure you catch Forerunner Records and Punkit for something a little bit different...
Friday is a day for jazz lovers. As well as our regular festival sessions and jazz orientated pop up performances (in partnership with Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival), we have a special evening concert in the Town Hall. Hear from big bands and smaller line ups, presented by none other than Birmingham's very own critically acclaimed jazz musician, Soweto Kinch.
SATURDAY 11 JULY PG. 44 The last day of the Festival brings us large scale orchestras and the fullest Fringe programme, with Festival Tent performances from the likes of Punch Records, Jazzlines, DanceXchange, the RNCM Session Orchestra and the Birmigham Rep Youth Theatre. We have also teamed up with Sound and Music for our second New Music Stage, taking place all day in Birmingham Conservatoire. Over in the Town Hall you have a chance to sample the up and coming bands of the future with our newly launched rock, pop and urban programme, Frequencies, hosted by BBC Introducing. He went on to enjoy 15 years freelancing as a conductor, working with many professional orchestras and youth orchestras. TONY HARRIS
JENNIFER MARTIN
Jennifer started playing the recorder at age 5, piano at age 7, the bassoon at 12 and the organ at 17. By the time she left school, she knew she wanted to be a composer. She went to Edinburgh University and stayed there for the next 18 years, doing a degree in Music and a postgraduate MPhil in Composition, before teaching on the Composition and Music in the Community courses. She has taught in universities, colleges, schools, nurseries, adult training centres and prisons and also ran the learning programme for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Having returned to a freelance career, she now composes, runs Hebrides Ensemble, mentors young musicians, teaches composition and co-owns a software company.
ANDY MELLON
Andy started learning the piano when he was 4 (because someone his mum went to yoga with was looking for pupils) and the trumpet at 9 (because his brother was learning, so it made sense!). He then secured a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. As well as playing trumpet and piano, Andy is also a composer and musical director. He started his career playing in orchestras and performing recitals. He soon started playing in more diverse groups, including theatre and world music, as well as the award winning folk band, Bellowhead. Soon he found himself playing in musicals, with pop acts and travelling to exotic countries playing Algerian Rai music. Andy also teaches trumpet and piano, and is an Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre.
Tony is Head of Secondary and Continuing Teacher Education at Nottingham Trent University, where he also leads the PGCE Secondary Music Programme. A musician by trade, he is a keyboard player, percussionist and composer. He first got into music at primary school as a master recorder player (or so he likes to think). He progressed to being a bad clarinettist until, thankfully, he left it on a bus and took up the piano. He seemed to handle the keyboard quite well and after studying music at university he qualified as a secondary school teacher. He has since worked in primary and secondary schools, FE colleges, Birmingham Conservatoire and on the education team for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
