A WORD FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE Welcome to the 46th Music for Youth National Festival. It’s that time of year when we welcome thousands of talented young musicians from all over the UK to Birmingham for five days of inspiring music making on the city’s world-class stages. This year, the CBSO Centre becomes one of the main festival venues, replacing the Adrian Boult Hall at the Birmingham Conservatoire. As well as the main stages, we have five Festival Fringe stages each day, offering more performance opportunities to more young musicians. I have been with Music for Youth for four years now and the buzz that surrounds this Festival never ceases to amaze me. It is truly infectious! The National Festival offers a great opportunity for young people, teachers, and music leaders to mingle with like-minded peers in the cafes, in workshops, or just around the Festival site. I find it inspiring that so much great music making is happening across the country. I am delighted to welcome you to the Music for Youth National Festival 2016. You should

M U S I C M E N TO R S ROGER ARGENTE

Roger Argente is the artistic director of Superbrass and the series editor of Superbrass Music. A graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, Roger studied with Professors Terry Nagle and Neville Roberts, and was a joint recipient of the prestigious Concerto Prize. During the past 20 years he has appeared as a guest performer with a wide variety of orchestras and ensembles, including: the BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, London Symphony Orchestra, London Brass, Symphonic Brass of London, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; and, on three separate occasions, with the prestigious Super World Orchestra at the Tokyo International Music Festival.

PATRICK BAILEY

Patrick plays piano and trumpet, and studied music at UEA and conducting at the Royal College of Music. He went on to enjoy 15 years freelancing as a conductor, working with many professional orchestras and youth orchestras. His experience working with young musicians and working on educational projects with orchestras led him to change tack slightly and he went to work for the BBC Concert Orchestra as Learning Manager – organising work with young people and families. He then became the Education & Community Director for the London Philharmonic Orchestra until 2013. Patrick now lives in Cornwall and works for any orchestras who might be dropping in, including the Philharmonia, BBC Concert Orchestra and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

ISSIE BARRETT

Issie is an internationally active composer, arranger, conductor, baritone player, record producer and educator who has performed at many leading concert halls, jazz clubs and festivals across the world. Issie is the founding Artistic Director of the National Youth Jazz Collective, Executive Director of Fuzzy Moon Records, Board Director of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors and external examiner for Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. She was also the founding Head of Jazz at Trinity Laban. In 2012 Issie was short listed for the Paul Hamlyn Awards for Artists and in 2014 received the Parliamentary Jazz Award for Education.

PHIL BATEMAN

Phil is a Musical Supervisor/Musical Director/Arranger and Orchestrator working in theatre, film and TV. He grew up in Camberley, Surrey and trained at Birmingham University. He is currently MD/Orchestrator on a new production of Bugsy Malone at Lyric Hammersmith (nominated for Best Olivier Revival 2016). Recently he was MD/Arranger for Dr Seuss’ The Lorax at The Old Vic (also nominated for an Olivier), and was the original MD on Billy Elliot the Musical - helping create the show and conducting the first year in the West End. Other major West End credits include ‘Our House – the Madness Musical’, ‘Made in Dagenham’ and Harry Hill’s X Factor Musical ‘I Can’t Sing!’. He was Singing Coach/Vocal Arranger on the movie ‘Kinky Boots’ and co-composer on Gareth Malone’s ‘Big Performance’ and ‘Extreme School’, both for CBBC. www.philipbateman.net

MALCOLM EDMONSTONE

Malcolm Edmonstone is amongst the most in demand of modern musicians, having forged parallel careers as pianist, arranger and educator, working across the broad spectrum of jazz and contemporary music. A prominent educator, he is Head of Jazz at the Guildhall School and Director of Jazz for NYOS (The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland). As an arranger he has written large-scale projects for jazz artists Liane Carroll, Iain Ballamy, Mike Walker and Jacqui Dankworth. In the commercial music arena Malcolm wrote and played for BBC1’s hit show Strictly Come Dancing for MD Laurie Holloway; his discography as a session musician is extensive and live TV broadcasts include accompanying Liza Minnelli. Malcolm writes for production music library Audio Network and lives in Bath with his wife Laura and their three children.

SARAH FREESTONE

Sarah started playing guitar with her junior school jazz combo “The Average Height Band” and learnt violin at her local music centre. She went on to study guitar and violin at the Royal Academy of Music and is now a multi-instrumentalist, conductor and workshop leader. She is a member of the BBC Concert Orchestra and is creative director of Animate, a young people’s creative orchestra. She is currently performing in the Threepenny Opera at the National Theatre where she gets to wear a silly hat and play five different instruments.

ANDY GRAPPY

Andy has worked as a freelance Tuba Player since 1985 and has performed with most of the major London orchestra’s including the London Symphony Orchestra, The Philharmonia , BBC Symphony and Concert Orchestras, and has played on many film and TV scores. Andy has also worked with leading jazz and world music artists including John Dankworth ,The Jazz Warriors, Lester Bowie, Hermeto Pascoal, Sam Rivers, Jason Moran, Charlie Haden and Carla Bley. Andy played in the Musical Chicago for ten years and since leaving has worked with artists as diverse as Tom Jones, Damon Albarn, Bellowhead, and Massive Attack. Andy is currently Head of Southwark “WAX” Music Centre.

MARK GRIFFITHS

Mark first learnt music in the local church and in county youth choirs. He began his career as a singer, working with London’s opera choruses, and began to work regularly with the Berkshire Youth Choir. Mark soon found himself more in demand as a choral conductor and workshop leader. In 2003 he became Musical Director of Coro, a prize-winning London-based chamber choir with whom he has toured internationally, commissioned new works and recorded three CDs. Mark has also been a guest conductor for the Philharmonia Chorus. He conducts choirs for the Junior Department, Trinity College of Music and he recently took on the Choral Conducting seminar for the University of Winchester.

DAVE MILLIGAN

Adey is a soprano, lyricist, animateur, writer, vocal consultant and conductor. She has created numerous roles in contemporary operas for major British composers and was a founding member of The Shout. She has worked for most of the leading opera companies in the UK and appeared as a concert soloist and recitalist in most major British venues. She is a programme advisor to the Spitalfields Festival and is a founding member of the Book, Music & Lyrics writers’ laboratory, developing new musical theatre. She works in outreach for the BBC, was part of the delivery team for Big Big Sing and teaches on projects in her local schools and with individuals of all ages. www.adeygrummet.co.uk

Tony is a music educator and Head of Teacher Education at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) where he has overall strategic leadership of initial teacher training, CPD and research in primary, secondary and post-compulsory education. He has previously held posts as a senior and principal lecturer and, for many years, led NTU’s highly regarded PGCE Secondary Music programme. Prior to joining NTU, Tony worked in the education team for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, lectured at Birmingham Conservatoire, and taught in primary, secondary and further education. An active composer and performer, he is founder member of the experimental duo The Pound Shop Boys with whom he has toured nationally.

Joanna is the Creative Lead, Composer and Author for Charanga Music, an award winning online digital music resource for teachers and young people. She was born and raised in Bristol and went on to study Clarinet and Saxophone at the University of Wales and the Royal Welsh College of Music. Following this, Joanna lived and worked in South Africa and studied Ethnomusicology at the University of Natal, with Darius Brubeck and Carol Muller. Upon her return to Britain she began working for Lancashire Music Service as their Head of Woodwind. As well as teaching, writing and publishing, Joanna has remained active as a performer in a variety of contexts and genres from theatre and orchestral work to big band and African Ensembles.

Dave Milligan is primarily a jazz pianist and improviser, but one whose musical imagination flows freely between all kinds of musical genres. Having performed all over the world, Dave is one of the most highly regarded pianists in Scotland. A highly skilled composer and arranger, he has written works for large-scale ensembles down to solos, duos, string quartets and numerous arrangements for small groups. He is currently Musical Director of youth folk orchestra, The Gordon Duncan Experience in Perth, and is in demand as a guest tutor and mentor at numerous youth learning projects throughout the country.

KEITH HEWSON

Keith started playing the piano at 7 and it is his main instrument. He also sings, plays guitar and can manipulate most brass instruments! Keith studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and then Leeds University. He became a teacher and throughout his career Keith developed school orchestras, brass bands, wind bands and choirs. He was appointed Director of Music at Egglescliffe School in 1979 and in the 29 years in post, his ensembles made 87 appearances at the MFY National Festival and 11 appearances at the MFY Proms. In 2002 Keith was voted Classic FM Music Teacher of the Year, and was given positions on the Specialist Schools Expert Panel and the government’s Music and Dance Scheme Group.

JENNIFER JOHN

Jennifer John is an entrepreneurial tour de force within the world of singing and performance. With an impressive track record of creative collaborations, a diverse array of recordings in her own right and with her international band, Killerfernandez, her career has been both innovative and dynamic. As the founder of the award winning music company, Sense of Sound that specialises in a cappella singing, she has been a major part of changing the face of choral singing across Merseyside and beyond. Having worked extensively in education, TV, health and wellbeing and the commercial music industry some highlights of her work with choirs includes, Gareth Malone’s ‘The Choir: Boys Don’t Sing’ and ‘Sing While You Work’, ‘Last Choir Standing’ and is currently one of the vocal coaches on ITV’s ‘The Voice’.

TREVOR LINES

After finishing a post-graduate course at the Guildhall School of Music, Trevor made his professional debut recording ‘The Cats Hide Under the Bed when I Play my Gary Windo Records’. The record is a strong mix of original compositions and re-workings of traditional British folk music. Trevor now performs in Birmingham based Bonfire Radicals who emerged from the folk/world scene with a fresh approach to traditional tunes and a host of creative original material. He has also been involved in playing traditional folk music and other projects, working with singers and developing original material and arrangements. Check out Trevor’s forthcoming folk album, which features guests Joe Broughton on violin, Paul Dunmall on reeds and Tom Chapman on cajon.

DOUGLAS MITCHELL

After studying at the Royal Academy of Music, Douglas joined the clarinet section of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1992, and was appointed co-principal in 2004. Aside from concerts, recordings and tours with the orchestra he was involved with its education department. He left the RPO in 2010, and now freelances with all major UK orchestras. He is a regular visitor in London’s music colleges, and this year coached the youth orchestras of Ulster, Iraq and Great Britain. He is also a composer and improviser, and has been part of collaborations and projects with Robert Mitchell, Damon Albarn, Matthew Bourne and Sting.

GWYN PARRY-JONES

Gwyn is well-known as an instrumentalist, conductor and music educator. He has performed with many leading orchestras and ensembles, and has appeared as a soloist or chamber musician at venues such as the Barbican, the Royal Festival Hall and St. David’s Hall. Gwyn has taught at the universities of Manchester, Gothenburg and Oxford, and was for some years Director of Music Performance at Reading University. He has maintained his interest in education, giving master-classes, and mentoring at a variety of festivals and competitions. Gwyn also has wide experience as a conductor, and has a number of published compositions to his name, mostly for voices or wind instruments.

ZOE RAHMAN

MOBO Award winning, Zoe studied classical piano at the Royal Academy of Music, took a music degree at Oxford University and then won a scholarship to study jazz performance at Berklee College of Music, Boston, where she studied with the inspirational pianist Joanne Brackeen. Zoe has been invited to play at many international jazz festivals and has worked extensively throughout the UK and internationally. She has been a featured artist on numerous TV and radio programmes and is frequently invited to sit on high-profile panels – most notably, the Mercury Music Prize, BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year, Nottingham International Jazz Piano competition. She shares her passion for music through teaching in a variety of contexts, inspiring musicians of all ages and abilities.

NEIL VALENTINE

Neil began as a violinist, until he grew really tall and at 14 switched to the viola. He studied at York University and Trinity College of Music and was a member of Southbank Sinfonia in 2007. He has delivered music projects with the London Symphony Orchestra, London Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia, Spitalfields Music Festival, BBC Proms and Wigmore Hall. He is an associate musician of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, recently spearheading Music for a While, a project on Music and Dementia in Hampshire Hospitals. He is also founder of ABC Concerts, a concert series for babies and toddlers that breaks down barriers to classical music.

ALISON WALKER

Alison studied recorder and cello at Royal Holloway, University of London, with postgraduate studies at Vienna Conservatoire and Guildhall School of Music and Drama. As well as continuing to enjoy a varied performing career, Alison has a passion for inclusive music making, and is much in demand as a music workshop leader, delivering musical collaborations for organisations including the BBC Proms and BBC Symphony Orchestra, Barbican, ABRSM, Royal College of Music, and the Royal Albert and Wigmore Halls. She is regularly invited to lead creative coaching sessions for instrumental and class music teachers. Alison is Recorder Tutor at Royal Holloway and teaches cello and recorder at all levels. Alison also tutors on the RCM Undergraduate Outreach Programme.

SARAH WATTS

Sarah studied at the Royal College of Music and plays the bassoon, saxophone and flute, but is best known now as a prolific composer of all kinds of music. She was very influenced by the Dankworth Allmusic philosophy, and played a big part in encouraging this broadminded musical thinking as Artistic Director of the National Youth Music Camps. Sarah presents workshops and inset days and her desire is to write music that is useful, enjoyable and accessible. She believes we are the product of the people who influence us, and that music educators have a great responsibility to encourage and inspire.

Soweto is a leading alto-saxophonist, producer and MC in the British jazz, hip hop and urban music scenes. Born in London, he began playing the saxophone at the age of nine before moving to Birmingham and beginning a long association with the vibrant city. Not only does he have a Modern History degree from the University of Oxford, Soweto has been nominated for a Mercury Music Prize, won two IMA Awards and two MOBO Awards for Best Jazz Act. The Flyover Show is Soweto’s flagship project, currently in its sixth year, which brings world class music and arts to the unusual setting of beneath a motorway flyover in inner-city Birmingham. Musicians from the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth will direct a rehearsal for wind bands, where young players will get a feel for what it is like to work in a professional band. W E D N E S D AY 0 6 SYMPHONY HALL FOYER 13:00 COMPOSER: MOLLY LAWES Age: 20 KITCHEN MUSIC PERFORMED BY: SAM WILSON ‘Kitchen Music’ is for solo percussion, in 3 movements: I. Starter, II. Main Course, III. Dessert. Performed using objects you would typically find in your kitchen, including different pitches of mugs, plastic bins, wooden spoons, and pans, it has an underlying accompaniment of electronics, made up of kitchen noises. Molly wanted it to give the common phrase ‘playing pots and pans’ a whole new meaning! Molly is studying composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, having been a National Youth Orchestra composer in 2013-14. She is a keen flautist and pianist and has developed an interest in sonic art, electronics and live performance installations. SYMPHONY HALL FOYER 13:15 COMPOSER: ROB CORRIN Age: 21 RAZOR_CLAM PERFORMED BY: MUSIC STUDENTS FROM MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY Razor_clam was composed for the Vonnegut Collective and is written for violin, trumpet, bass clarinet and drums. It was composed through a collaborative process which

throughout the

explores the dialogue between the composer and performer, notation and improvisation, and today it is performed by music students from Manchester University’s music society. Rob Corrin is a composer and improviser. He is an experienced saxophonist, and is currently studying for a masters in instrumental composition at the University of Manchester. His main interest is in free jazz and in the grey area between composition and improvisation, and between intentional sound and unintentional noise. FESTIVAL TENT 16:45 COMPOSER: FRANCESCA WARREN Age: 18 NOAH’S ZOO PERFORMED BY: THE GENESIS ENSEMBLE This short orchestral piece is taken from Francesca’s ballet ‘Noah’s Zoo’, based on the biblical story ‘Noah’s Ark and the Flood’. Written for the Genesis Ensemble, who are primarily from the Royal College of Music, Francesca developed musical themes to represent different characters, and has used these themes to communicate the story. Francesca began learning piano aged five and bassoon aged seven. With a passion for Musical Directing, she has led, arranged and composed for a variety of productions including ‘Sister Act’ and Christmas variety shows.

FESTIVAL TENT 14:15 COMPOSER/PERFORMER: LEONA TINDALL Age: 12 PUZZLES ‘Puzzles’ is an upbeat song about feeling good, and proving yourself wrong. It’s about doing the things you didn’t think you’d be able to do, and was written on a long family car journey. It is performed by singer/songwriter Leona Tindall who accompanies herself on guitar. Leona has been writing and performing her own music since the age of 7. Her songs tend to reflect the way she is feeling. Initially, she was influenced by artists such as Taylor Swift but she now listens to and draws on a wide variety of artists. She also regularly sings as part of her senior school show choir.

F R I D AY 0 8 TOWN HALL, JAZZ (SCHOOL) COMPOSER: LUCAS KELLY Age: 17 MINI JYMPHONY PERFORMED BY: GREENHEAD COLLEGE BIG BAND ‘Mini Jymphony’ is a short ‘jazz symphony’ for Big Band and is a battle between traditional, ‘straight-ahead’ swing and modern funk. Lucas plays piano/ synthesizers in several jazz groups, including Greenhead College Big Band, and is always composing. He also writes and arranges regularly for a student led group – The Jazz Turnips. – he originally wrote ‘Mini Jymphony’ as part of his music GCSE composition. TOWN HALL, JAZZ (COMBOS) COMPOSER: TOTO GILL in collaboration with Alex Sansbury & Matthew Veck Age: 18 ALL IN PERFORMED BY: BRIGHTON COLLEGE JAZZ TRIO ‘All In’ is a contemporary jazz piece, fusing modern elements while retaining the traditional jazz piano trio form. It has a large number of different sections, and tonal centres, as well as complex cross-rhythms in 7/8 - hence the name ‘All In’. Toto Gill plays classical and jazz piano and is a music scholar at Brighton College. He writes for the Brighton College Jazz Trio, which he formed, often collaborating with the other members of the trio.

S AT U R D AY 0 9 CBSO CENTRE, CHAMBER COMPOSER: CRAIG LAMPORT Age: 17 SUNSET MELODY PERFORMED BY: CRAIG LAMPORT & SCOTT CALDWELL-NICHOLS ‘Sunset Melody’ is a short piece for 2 classical guitars and portrays the beauty of the setting sun through cantabile style melodies. It demonstrates the full potential of the instrument by incorporating natural and artificial harmonics and hammerons and pull-offs. Craig has been playing guitar for 10 years and started composing his own music when he started secondary school. He has only recently started writing for just two guitars. This piece is part of his A level composition. CBSO CENTRE, CHAMBER COMPOSER: HARRY HARRISON Age: 16 FOR ERIC PERFORMED BY: HARRY HARRISON & ERIC FABRIZI ‘For Eric’ is a piece in two parts for piano and violin. Harry wrote this piece specifically with violinist Eric Fabrizi in mind, taking into account his strong double-stopping and expressive performance technique. Harry has been composing for 2-3 years, and plays piano and double bass. He has written a lot for his duo (piano/drums) heavily influenced by modern jazz, and increasingly for solo piano. His compositions incorporate a wide range of influences from classical music, contemporary and experimental music, modern jazz and beyond. FESTIVAL TENT 14:00 COMPOSER: KATY HAUGH / OMNI-X Age: 18 WASTE OF TIME PERFORMED BY: OMNI-X ‘Waste of Time’ is a pop song written by and for OMNI-X. Katy and bandmate, Harriet, wrote the song and chords together and the other bandmate, Oscar, wrote and produced the backing track. Katy is a classically trained pianist and percussionist, and also plays bass guitar and drums in contemporary bands. Her favourite classical composer is Chopin but she mainly listens to pop music, drawing on artists like FKA Twigs and Banks.

SYMPHONY HALL, ORCHESTRAS COMPOSER: FREYA IRELAND Age: 18 FROM ANCIENT GRUDGE TO NEW MUTINY PERFORMED BY: GLOUCESTERSHIRE YOUTH ORCHESTRA Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra perform ‘From Ancient Grudge to New Mutiny’, which depicts Shakespeare’s prologue to ‘Romeo & Juliet’. The piece is conducted by the composer, who is also the principal clarinettist. Freya is a composer and clarinettist - she also plays percussion, piano and sings. Freya is currently principal composer for the National Youth Orchestra and has won the RPS Duet Prize for Young Composers. Her compositions have been performed by Tallis Scholars and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. TOWN HALL. ROCK, POP, FUNK & SOUL COMPOSER: ISAAC RADCLIFFE / OFF THE GRID Age: 18 LETTERS ON THE DOOR PERFORMED BY: OFF THE GRID ‘Letters on the Door’ is a song by Off the Grid, for banjo, mandolin, guitar and voice. It was written collaboratively in a practice session, with Isaac Radcliffe providing the lyrics. Off the Grid is an acoustic band with a folk feel. They play a variety of music for vocals, guitar, ukulele, banjo, mandolin and cajon, and are friends from the same school, who came together through their love of music. TOWN HALL. ROCK, POP, FUNK & SOUL COMPOSER/PERFORMER: RHYTHMIC CONDITION Age: 16 - 18 ROULETTE ‘Roulette’ has been written for 4 piece rock band consisting of drums, bass, keys and guitar. It opens with a jam between bass and drums, and the whole piece is an opportunity to experiment with changing time signatures. Rhythmic Condition are a rock/electronica band who thrive on improvisation and write their own material, as well as covering music by favourite artists including Jeff Beck and The Beatles.

N AT I O N A L T W I N N I N G SCHEME In 2015, Music for Youth set up its first National Twinning Scheme. The purpose of the project is to support collaborative working between Music Education Hubs and other providers in a given region. It is also to focus on practical projects to increase the numbers of young people continuing their music learning into secondary school. The scheme has consisted of three large scale collaborations, each of which has a totally unique and distinctive project vision. On Wednesday 6 July, all these projects will come together to share their work and take part in joint workshops as part of the National Festival 2016. The workshops will be led by MFY Music Mentor, Mark Griffiths.

G R E AT E R M A N C H E S T E R P R O J E C T FIRST ACCESS CHALLENGE THE MANCHESTER TWINNING PROJECT, FACILITATED BY MUSIC FOR YOUTH, INVOLVES THE GREATER MANCHESTER (GM) MUSIC HUB, THE MANCHESTER MYHUB AND THE GM FIRST ACCESS FORUM. THE ‘FIRST ACCESS CHALLENGE’ WORKING PARTY DISCUSSED CURRENT CHALLENGES IN ‘FIRST ACCESS’ MUSIC PROVISION AND PROPOSED SOME NEW DELIVERY MODELS TO TACKLE IDENTIFIED CHALLENGES.

SOUTH YORKSHIRE PROJECT B A C H ’ S TO C C ATA – S O U T H Y O R K S H I R E ’ S F U G U E THE SOUTH YORKSHIRE TWINNING PROJECT INVOLVES BARNSLEY MUSIC SERVICE, DONCASTER, SHEFFIELD, AND ROTHERHAM MUSIC EDUCATION HUBS. THE PARTNERS HAVE BEEN WORKING COLLABORATIVELY TO ADDRESS ISSUES AROUND PROGRESSION, THROUGH A CREATIVE PROJECT LED BY COMPOSER, ANDY SMITH. FOCUSING ON YEARS 5-8 AND INVOLVING PRIMARY, SECONDARY AND SPECIAL SCHOOLS ACROSS ALL FOUR REGIONS, THEY CREATED A PIECE INSPIRED BY BACH’S TOCCATA & FUGUE CALLED ‘BACH’S TOCCATA - SOUTH YORKSHIRE’S FUGUE’. Children from 3 primary schools, 4 secondary schools and 2 special schools worked alongside their class teachers and composer, Andy Smith, to compose their own creative responses. All of these ideas have been put together with Bach’s ‘Toccata & Fugue’. The resulting piece is performed at the National Festival by the composers themselves, with the help of a Symphony Orchestra of young musicians from South Yorkshire.

NORTH E AST PROJECT PA S S I O N AT E A B O U T S I N G I N G THE NORTH EAST TWINNING PROJECT HAS FOCUSED ON SINGING PROVISION, AND INVOLVES DURHAM MUSIC SERVICE, TEES VALLEY MUSIC SERVICE, SUNDERLAND MUSIC EDUCATION HUB, EGGLESCLIFFE SCHOOL AND THE SAGE GATESHEAD. THE PARTNERS HAVE COME TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE THE STRENGTH OF SINGING TEACHING IN THE REGION, AND TO SHARE AND EXTEND GOOD PRACTICE FROM PRIMARY SCHOOL LEVEL THROUGH TO YOUTH CHOIRS. The National Twinning Scheme has facilitated greater partnership working between music education providers in the region, with a view to supporting young people’s progression in music. Ten singing groups ranging from primary and secondary schools to experienced youth choirs have worked together and will perform Andrew Carter’s ‘Benedicite’ at the National Festival.

The working party felt that children in ‘First Access’ programmes needed music to perform which: · is crafted around their needs and capabilities · puts the children at the centre of the music, rather than having a few add-on notes to play within a pre-existing piece · builds on improvisation at a very early stage · gives young children a chance to play alongside older children who are more advanced musicians (the piece is supported by a youth jazz ensemble) · involves a singing element · is flexible enough to be performed by several classes of children and a range of instruments. Ed Puddick was subsequently commissioned to write a new piece for whole classes of ‘First Access’ children to perform together - ‘Another Kind of Imagination’.

M U S I C F O R YO U T H N AT I O N A L PA RT N E R S H I P AWA R D S 2 0 1 6 / 1 7 The National Partnership Awards provide a unique opportunity for Music for Youth to match some of the talented musicians who perform at the National Festival with music industry partners. These partners are keen to welcome young musicians from across the country through their doors and offer them developmental music education experiences appropriate to the needs and circumstances of each group. The award sponsors represent some of the key players in the arts, and in music education, and have a wealth of hands-on opportunities to offer young musicians. Two groups will be nominated by our professional Music Mentors at the end of each of the main stage sessions at the National Festival. Music for Youth will then consider all the nominations, and make the final selections with the award sponsors. These will be announced in September, and the successful groups will be invited to a special celebration event at the Royal Albert Hall in the autumn, where they will meet their award sponsor and start to map out their partnership activity. There will also be a special award for a school based music teacher who has shown inspirational leadership in the direction of their group at the National Festival. Music for Youth is grateful to all award sponsors and hopes that the activity programmes they devise will inspire both teachers, directors and young musicians, as well as open up new partnership opportunities on an ongoing basis.

NATIO NAL PARTNERSHIP AWARDS MY EXPERIENCE In July 2015 Contours, a jazz/ folk trio from Cornwall, performed in the World, Folk & Roots session of the Music for Youth National Festival and were later thrilled to receive a National Partnership Award, sponsored by the Musicians’ Union. After discussions with the MU to establish what would best suit their musical development, the group were given advice and guidance regarding potential careers, and offered four days in the Gighouse Recording Studios near Birmingham. Here they recorded, mixed and mastered their first EP. The young musicians are now planning to press copies and release the tracks, many of which are their own compositions, on iTunes and Spotify.

FREQUENCIES FREQUENCIES OFFERS YOUNG ARTISTS THE CHANCE TO PERFORM AND COLLABORATE WITH PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS AND NETWORK WITH INDUSTRY EXPERTS. Through Frequencies, Music for Youth offers professional performance platforms to emerging talent across the country. Bands and solo artists are recruited directly, using channels including social media and relevant regional partner organisations in the informal sector. Frequencies complements Music for Youth’s traditional festival programme, offering routes into the music industry and opportunities to collaborate with a range of professional commercial artists at the events themselves. It appeals to a broad mix of talented young people up to the age of 21, who bring their own material, and a huge appetite for developing their music and meeting and working with other musicians. During 2016/17 Music for Youth will develop more national performance platforms for the Frequencies series, beyond its established programme of events.

RUBIK’S CUBE IS A GROUP OF AMAZINGLY TALENTED PUPILS FROM OSBORNE SCHOOL IN WINCHESTER. The band was formed in 2009 when a pupil who was disengaging with lessons found a passion for drumming. He asked for a band to be put together to support his talent, and ‘Rubik’s Cube’ was born. The band promotes self-esteem building, friendship and fun through their rehearsals and concerts. They have already played some big events, including the Winchester Theatre Royal and the Music for Youth Proms in 2015.

The opportunities Music for Youth has given our band, Rubik’s Cube, have been lifechanging. Our young people have had the time of their lives preparing for Music for Youth shows - they have made new friendships, conquered stereotypes of their disabilities and enjoyed every moment. The thrill our young people experience by playing these shows is found nowhere else - the expertise and organisation is outstanding and the understanding the staff show towards our performers (who all have special educational needs) is exceptional. They have, on many occasions, gone out of their way to give Rubik’s Cube members the best days of their lives. The National Festival is a grand day out for us all - a chance to perform on an epic stage, a chance for an epic road trip and the opportunity for our young people to perform all their favourite hits. One parent said to me: “I never in my wildest dreams would ever had thought my children would be performing in the Royal Albert Hall and to see Ella there was a truly humbling experience.” Ben Dlugokecki, Musical Director of Rubik’s Cube
