Any event which has established itself as a tradition can so easily slip into simply repeating its previous successes. The Schools Prom, now celebrating its fifteenth anniversary, is spared such a fate, as young people and their teachers continue to approach music with such spontaneity and creative flair. We are proud to present yet another kal~idoscope of musical performances and to marvel at the achievements of these young singers and instrumentalists. The sheer variety of music is unparalleled barbershop to Romanian folk, systems music to Mozart steel pans, pop songs and the ever popular Land of Hope and Glory. The Schools Prom does not exist in isolation . It is a reflection and enrichment of the musical life of young (and old) throughout the country. Music for Youth, therefore, welcomes the decision to include music as one of the foundation subjects in the new national curriculum, a recognition of the unique contribution music makes to education. However, there is still cause for concern as no one can predict the effect Local Management of Schools will have on instrumental teaching and on the many ensembles organised by county music services. We hope that governors and heads will continue to foster music and the arts among their new responsibilities. On a celebratory note, we look forward next year to the 20th anniversary of the National Festival of Music for Youth. The occasion will be marked by a Gala Festival Prom at the Royal Festival Hall. We are taking this opportunity to launch ourselves into the next decade with new initiatives which include encouraging new composition, electro-acoustic music and multicultural ensembles.

Schools Prom Personalities Bob Holness, Presenter. As the dreaded doodle-bugs rained down on London's suburbs one night towards the close of the Second World War, a young boy lying huddled beneath his blankets secretly listening to a small crackling radio set could have had no idea that his addiction to radio would one day lead to an acclaimed career in broadcasting. The boy's name was Robert Holness and his career over the past thirty-four years has spanned virtually every aspect of broadcasting in both radio and television. His sheer love and enthusiasm for his work has ensured not only his dual success on both the small screen and the airwaves, but also his enduring popularity with old and young alike. Twenty-six years after making his television debut as host of Granada Television's early game show 'Take a Letter: Holness is known to an average audience of some twelve million viewers as host of Central Television's runaway success, 'Blockbusters', the first quiz show in Britain to air on a daily basis. Bob's special rapport with his eager young competitors and the consistently cliff-hanging, intelligent nature of the show won 'Blockbusters' the TV Times Readers' Favourite Game Show Award twice and three British Academy Award nominations for Best Children's Programmes. Now into its seventh series, 'Blockbusters' is also regularly voted the 'Best Game Show' by the readers of Britain's national newspapers. Bob Holness has achieved a great deal in his thirty-four year career in radio and television but he admits to a certain nagging regret. "1 would dearly love to have played either the flute, or the trombone, my two favourite instruments and then I could make my own music. Still, there is plenty of time .. .I may yet get that done too ... :'

Antony Hopkins CBE, Guest Conductor and Presenter, has been associated with the Schools Prom from the first and has conducted the finale at everyone. He has lectured and conducted in many countries and his 'Talking About Music' programme on Radio 4 is now in its thirty-fifth year. His book, 'Understanding MusiC, won the Yorkshire Post Award as the best music book of 1986 and has now been issued in paperback. His book on the Beethoven symphonies has also been reprinted as a paperback while other publications include 'Sounds of Music', a book about the orchestra, and his highly entertaining autobiography 'Beating Time'. His book of scandalous poems about musicians, 'Music-amusings', is guaranteed to make you laugh. Another work of his, 'John & the Magic Music Man', makes a perfect introduction to the orchestra for young children. More recent books are 'Concertgoer's Companion', which came out in November 1984 with Volume 2 following in January 1986, and the more recently completed mammoth book, 'Exploring Music'. Richard Stilgoe, Presenter, has a wife, and ex-wife, five children, a dog and a concrete mixer. From this you will gather that he is passionate and creative but essentially down to earth . He was born in Camberley and brought up in Liverpool where he sang 'I Know That My Redeemer Liveth' at St. Agnes' Church and 'Rip It Up' at the Cavern. In trying to write a song as good as either of these, he has now written several hundred and played the results on radio ('Today', 'Stilgoe's Around' and the prize-winning 'Hamburger Weekend'), on television (,Nationwide', 'That's Life', his own series and

everyone else's} and on stages all over the world. His one-man show has been seen at festivals from Edinburgh to Adelaide. Clients for his bespoke cabaret act include IBM in Rhodes, Butlin's in Toronto and H.M. The Queen at Windsor Castle. His two-man show with Peter Skellern ran happily in London's West End. They are now working on a musical set in India. For Andrew Lloyd Webber he wrote the words for the opening song of 'Cats', all of the words in 'Starlight Express' and every other word in 'The Phantom of the Opera'. This has paid for the concrete mixer, and enabled him to found the Orpheus Trust, which helps disabled children to play and enjoy music. Much of his work is now with children. He introduces opera to children at Glyndebourne and is a director of the National Youth Music Theatre, for whom he wrote the words and music of 'Bodywork: a musical that takes place inside the human body. This had its premiere at the 1987 Edinburgh Festival and has now been recorded with Peter Howitt as the Soul, Chas 'n' Dave as the Hair and Lonnie Donegan as the Appendix. He still occasionally sings 'Rip It Up' but now finds'I Know That My Redeemer Liveth' a bit high. Larry Westland, Executive Director of Music for Youth, has directed and produced the Schools Prom since its inception in 1975. He is well respected for his work in youth music, primarily as Director of the National Festival of Music for Youth which he co-founded in 1970. He is Director of the Barclays Awards and General Administrator of the British Youth Band Championships which he founded in 1978 with Stephen Johnson and the British Youth Band Association.

Schools Prom Special Guests Amy Claricoates, Guest Soloist, was born in March 1971 and started to study the cello when she was nine. She is currently studying with William Pleeth, whom she joined following the death of Florence Hooton in May 1988. She is the principal cellist in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and was awarded the Lloyds Bank Prize this year. She was a semi-finalist in the 1988 BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition and has won numerous awards, including the International Madame Suggia Gift for the cello in 1988 and ongoing awards from the Martin Musical Scholarship Fund. The instrument on which she plays was made in 1983 by a local instrument maker.

Don Lusher, Guest Soloist, was born in Peterborough. His father and mother were both active musical salvationists. He started his professional career with Joe Daniels and then moved on to Lou Preager, Maurice Winnick, The Squadronnaires, Jack Parnell, Geraldo and Ted Heath. He was lead trombone with Ted Heath for nine years and did several coast to coast tours of the USA. While he was in the States he heard Tommy Dorsey and had tuition from Dick Nash and the late Will Bradley. During his time with Ted Heath, Don topped many musical polls. He now works in the studios as a freelance musician, and has worked with many famous conductors including Henry Mancini, the late Nelson Riddle, Bob Farnon, Alyn Ainsworth, Ronnie Hazlehurst, Michel Legrand and many more. He has also toured with Frank Sinatra many times. Don does guest appearances with Brass Bands, Wind Bands, Jazz Groups and Big Bands, including NYJO, MYJO, Doncaster Youth Jazz Band & Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Don has his own band, The Don Lusher Big Band and fronts the reformed Ted Heath Band. He was chosen to give the first performance of 'Rhapsody for Trombone' by Gordon Langford in 1975, 'Dance Sequence' by Gareth Wood in 1980 both at the Royal Albert Hall and 'Concerto for Trombone' by Gordon Carr at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1980 and 'Concertino for Trombone, Strings and Percussion' by Scott Stroman at Lichfield Cathedral. He gives Master Classes all over the world and is President of the British Trombone Society as well as a composer and arranger. He has given many interviews on radio and was chosen to take Alan Dell's place for two weeks for Radio Two's 'Big Band Era'. In 1976 he was voted Musician of the Year by the BBC2 Jazz Society and in 1986 he was nominated for the Wavenden All Music Special Award. In 1987 he was awarded The Gold Badge of Merit for Services to British Music by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors. He is a professor at the Royal College of Music, where he teaches the college big band .

BIRMINGHAM SCHOOLS' WIND ORCHESTRA

Musical Director/Conductor: Alicia Bardsley Age range of performers: 6-13 years The Lord's My Shepherd H. Smart Two for the Price of One Andrew Carter The Alicia Bardsley Singers are the junior group of the larger youth choir. All members have individual vocal tuition from the Musical Director, Alicia Bardsley and also meet twice a week for rehearsals. The choir is well known in the North West for its performances for charity and festival successes. The choir has been on tour twice, visiting France in 1988 and Germany this summer, where they have been invited to return next year. They entered the National Festival of Music for Youth for the Hrst time this year and were very plea ed to receive an Outstanding Performance Award. The choir will sing tonight, two contrasting songs that they included in their programme at the National Festival.

Cordon Jacob Festival Overture Dmitri Shostakovich West Side Story: Symphonic Dances (Cha Cha, Mambo) Leonard Bernstein The Birmingham Schools' Wind Orchestra was formed in September 1970 to broaden the opportunities available for young instrumentalists in the city - it is now one of fifteen wide ranging representative music ensembles that rehearse weekly. The repertoire is firmly based on original compositions for symphonic wind band (BSWO have given a number of premiere performances of pieces by British composers), plus quality arrangements of both serious and light music. Earlier in the year the orchestra undertook a concert tour of the USA, visiting and performing in New York, Boston, Washington etc., during which they gave the American premiere of 'SPQR' by Guy Woolfenden. The orchestra have been participating in the National Festival of Music for Youth since its inception in 1971. Festival Overture Dmitri Shostakovich The Festival Overture was composed in 1954, in the period between Symphony No. 10 and the Violin Concerto and contains one of Shostakovich's greatest attributes - the ability to write a long sustained melodic line combined with a pulsating rhythmic drive. West Side Story: Symphonic Dances (Cha Cha, Mambo) Leonard Bernstein The 1957 musical 'West Side Story' transferred the Romeo and Juliet story to the New York slums with the conflict between native Americans and Puerto Rican immigrants. The Symphonic Dances contain some of the most exciting music written for the show.

BRADLEY BARTON PRIMARY SCHOOL VOCALI INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE, NEWTON ABBOf Musical Director: Jackie Prouse Soloists: Lisa Kay (dancer), Eloise Prouse (violin), Katie Taylor (flute) Age range of performers: 8-11 years Doing Things by Numbers Holman, arr. May I Know Him So Well Andersson, arr. Uraeus Donna, Donnal Those Were the Days Trad., arr. Raskin The vocal/instrumental ensemble is a 56-strong group of young musicians aged between eight and eleven years old. It is one of the many musical activities which takes place during break-times in preparation for their numerous public appearances. Bradley Barton Primary School has just celebrated its 10th Anniversary and was pleased to perform at the National Festival of Music for Youth for the fifth time this year. They are particularly proud to be performing at the Schools Prom and regard this invitation as the 'icing on the cake'. Dance is featured in tonight's programme with Lisa's interpretation of 'I Know Him So Well'. Lisa has won many competitions and appeared in a number of professional shows. The solo violinist is a member of three symphony orchestras and a chamber orchestra in Devon and is also a member of the National Children's Orchestra .

Programme Notes BURGHCLERE COUNTY PRIMARY SCHOOL BAND, NEWBURY Conductor: K. A. F. Kelley Age range of performers: 7·11 years Stuart lohnson Three Songs from the New World The dream of a Burghclere Primary School Band dates from 1968. It owes its birth and development to the previous Headteacher who arrived from a school in Havant clutching a cornet. She proceeded to teach a few children how to play, persuaded the Hampshire Education Authority to provide the school with a peripatetic brass teacher and it is from these humble beginnings that the band has flourished . Burghclere Primary School is situated on the Hampshire/Berkshire border 20 miles north of Winchester. The present roll is 92 children (36 infants, 56 juniors). The band comprises 38 of the juniors with an age range from seven to eleven years. If they so wish, children start learning to play an instrument when they enter the juniors. When they have made sufficient progress they join the band. The band has a daily early morning practice and plays regularly at fetes, festivals and concerts. Children may enter the Guildhall School of Music & Drama grade exams should they so wish. Three Songs from the New World Stuart lohnson A selection of three, some say four, traditional songs from the USA, very cleverly put together by Stuart Johnson, a composer and arranger, many of whose works ideally suit our young musicians.

CITY OF LEEDS YOUTH ORCHESTRA Conductor: Colin Brackley lones Leader: Lucy Hartley Organ: Darius Batti·Walla Age range of performers: 12-19 years Symphony No. 3 in C minor, op. 78 (Organ Symphony) Camille Saint·Sai>ns - Finale Pomp and Circumstance MarchNo.l'Land of Hope and Glory' Edward Elgar Now 25 years old, the City of Leeds Youth Orchestra draws its members from the whole of the Leeds metropolitan district which has a population of about 750,000. Members rehearse every week and on residential and non·residential courses. Close links with the Leeds International Pianoforte and Conductors' Competitions mean that the orchestra is able to work regularly with the best young soloists and conductors. The orchestra has travelled widely and performed in a number of great venues such as the Concertgebouw and the Madeleine Church in Paris. The orchestra plays contemporary works whenever it can and has commissioned a number of new pieces. Links with the Leeds Youth Opera group and the Northern School of Contemporary Dance provide opportunities for players to accompany both opera and dance and the orchestra has also worked with the London Contemporary Dance Theatre in a major community project.

Symphony No. 3 in C minor, op. 78 (Organ Symphony) Camille Saint·Saens - Finale Commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society of London, this work was first performed in London under the direction of the composer in 1886. Saint·Saens, for many years organist of the Madeleine in Paris, understood the possibilities of the instrument to the full and was able to write a piece which demonstrates how the organ can share both a starring and supportive role with the orchestra. In this finale the full power of the instrument is exploited yet the orchestra is never relegated to second place. Rather, it shares in its glory as the work proceeds to one of the great climaxes in the symphonic repertoire. Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 Edward Elgar 'Land of Hope and Glory' The Pomp and Circumstance marches form a series of five military marches for orchestra, four of which date from between 1901 and 1907 and the last from 1930. The celebrated patriotic words of A. C. Benson were added later to the first march in D major for a special Gala Performance given to commemorate the Coronation of Edward VII.

Popeth Sy'n Unigryw (Everything is Beautiful) Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi is a comparatively small Welsh· medium rural school which was established in 1984 and tonight's choir consists of forty pupils ranging from eleven to eighteen years of age. Since its formation in 1988 it has had numerous successes including the first prize at the Urdd National Eisteddfod of Wales at Newton. It has also appeared in the final of the BBC Radio Wales Schools' Choir '89 competition and has recently released its first commercial recording. For this event, the choir will sing Welsh translations of the ever popular songs 'Bright Eyes' and 'Everything is Beautiful; both of which have been arranged by the choir's musical director. Also included in the programme is a traditional Welsh folk song - 'Deryn y Bwn dr Banna - arranged by Brian Hughes.

Ann Morgan has been responsible for the school's musical programme for the last twenty years, a school which takes pride in its pupils being instructed mainly through the Welsh medium. Music plays an important part in the life of the school and its community with various concerts, competitive participation, choir, recorder ensemble, musicals, vocal and instrumental work etc. Entry into the choir is gained by each pupil's ability to be alert and enthusiastic, to have perfect clear pitch, speed at learning a melodic line and the ability to interpret th e meaning of the text musically and expressively: The choir are this year's winners of the Cerdd Dant Choral Competition held at the national Eisteddfod. The two young accompanying harpists are ex-pupils of Rhydypennau School. Siona Sian Bryceson Treharne The two characters in this pieces visit a show with creatures they have never before set eyes upon. Listen out for the slithering snake, strong elephant footsteps, mischievous monkey and the ferocious tiger and lion. Ar Lan fy Afon i Elerie Owen & Carys lones This two-part melodic arrangement will be sung with an Air played on the accompanying harps. Pan Fo'r Nos yn Hir Ryan Davies In the light of so many tragic disasters recently, this song tells us how hope and faith will one day overcome the pain and anguish at the loss of a loved one. The author and compose~ Ryan Davies, one of Wales' most gifted and brilliant entertainer ' sadly died at a young age.

DORSET YOUTH ORCHESTRA Conductor: David Norton Leader: Oliver Nelson Age range of performers: 14-19 years Pictures from an Exhibition (Promenade, TuiIeries, Baba Yaga, The Great Gate of Kiev) Modeste Mussorgsky Pomp and Circumstance MarchNo.l'Land of Hope and Glory' Edward Elgar The responsibility for the Dorset County Youth Orchestras and bands is that of the principal tutor of the Instrumental Music Service, Mrs Carol Bacon-Harty. She works closely with her senior tutors, David Norton, Moyra Rickard, John Pritchard and David Kenyon, to maintain a youth orchestra of an excellent standard. Auditions for a place in the orchestra are held each year for young instrumentalists from all types of schools in Dorset. There are three courses a year members are coached by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra members and teachers from the Instrumental Music Service. This year the DYO went on their first tour abroad to the Muzikafest in Malta. Their concerts included one in Gozo Cathedral, at the University of Sleima and at an Old People's Home. All concerts were very well received and many friends were made in Malta. After playing at the Royal Festival Hall in the National Festival of Music for Youth in July, the Dorset Youth Orchestra had their annual summer course where the major work studied was 'Pictures from an Exhibition by Modeste Mussorgsky. Tonight they will perform four movements: Promenade Depicts Mussorgsky strolling through his friend Hartmanns Exhibition of paintings. TuiIeries Subtitled 'Dispute of Children after Play', the picture shows a famous park in Paris with children and nursemaids.

Baba Yaga The Russian witch who eats human bones ground into a paste with a pestle and mortar, which she also uses to ride through the sky. In the coda her wild flight leads directly in to .... The Great Gate of Kiev Mussorgsky's interpretation of Hartmann's painting of this gateway which was erected to commemorate Czar Alexander I1's miraculous escape from assassination in 1866. Pomp and Circumstance MarchNo.l'Land of Hope and Glory' Edward Elgar The Pomp and Circumstance marches are a series of five military marches in symphonic form. The first march is now best known because of its link with the words 'Land of Hope and Glory'. This link came about when Elgar used both the words and music in his Coronation Ode to commemorate the Coronation of Edward VII. A hybrid it may be, but it never fails to stir the patriotic fervour associated with it.

Programme Notes DURHAM YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA Musical Director: Bill Watson Soloists: Stephen Robson (saxophone), Usa French (vocals) Age range of performers: 15-21 years The Last Dive Matt Harris Shades of Blue and Green Paul Higgs The Durham Youth Jazz Orchestra was formed in 1981 by its musical director, Bill Watson. It is independent of any L.E.A. or county council. In recent years the band has been winner of the BBC National Big Band Competition, Edinburgh International Jazz Festival Youth Competition (three times) and the National Concert Band Festival. It has also been presented with Highly Commended and Outstanding Performance Awards at the National Festival of Music for Youth. DYJO has performed at venues with Don Lusher, Tommy Whittle, George Chisholm, Janusz Carmello, Stan Tracey, Courtney Pine and The World's Greatest Jazz Band. It has recorded for both radio and television on a number of occasions and has had music commissioned by Northern Arts and composed by John Warren. It performs regularly in Durham and much of its work now revolves around college and university balls and jazz nights, as well as music and jazz festivals. About 80% of the Band's members go into the music profession. The Last Dive Matt Harris This work has a 'rock' feel throughout and is a perfect vehicle for extended improvisations from Step hen Robson. Section work is prominent with demanding parts for Gary Ritson (trumpet) and Stuart Ellerton (drums). Paul Higgs Shades of Blue and Green This work gives the Band the opportunity to introduce a vocalist, Lisa French. This is the first year that the Band has used vocals and this was found to be IDast success.fuJ in Edinburgh. 'Shades of Blue and Green' moves away from the straight ahead 'rock' feel and relies more on a rhythm section 'groove'.

Alyn Ainsworth Fireshaker Maynard Ferguson & Chris Braymen, arr. Bob Lowden Edlington Collegiate Jazz Orchestra was formed two years ago by its musical director, Mark Hird, in response to a desire to tackle more demanding modern jazz compositions/arrangements. The twenly-two-strong band, which meets weekly for rehearsals, evolved from the music department of Edlington Comprehensive School near Doncaster, where Mark Hird is Head of Performing Arts. Over the last four years jazz and wind bands from the school have enjoyed considerable success at the National Festival of Music for Youth, receiving five Highly Commended Performance Awards and one Outstanding Performance Award. This is the second appearance of the jazz orchestra at the Schools Prom. Supported by the Don Valley Institute of Further Education, the Jazz Orchestra forms a pioneering evening class open to senior school musicians, as well as catering for recent school le avers who wish to continue playing jazz. Don Lusher, accomplished trombonist, will join the band for the second item of their programme, 'Every Time We Say Goodbye'.

David Victor-Smith When David Victor-Smith founded the Farnham Youth Choir in 1984 (drawing children from twenty-three schools in a fifteen mile radius of Farnham, Surrey), his aim was to provide YOllngsters of nine to fifteen years with a high standard of choral experience in support of their personal musical development. On gaining an Outstanding Performance Award at the alional Festival of Music for Youth this year and, before that, on reaching the semi-finals of the televised Choir of the Year Competition in 1988, the children have enjoyed many memorable musical occasions. Their first commercially produced cassette was launched this July, containing songs that span four centuries and encompass many different styles. In May of this year, the choir made a second trip abroad, as guest of the OJAL Youth Orchestra of Sceaux, near Paris. The three items selected for tonight's performance represent favourites from the choir's present repertoire. 'Deo Gracias' comes from Benjamin Britten's popular 'Ceremony of Carols' and has a punishing piano accompaniment executed with great s.kill by Julia.Freeman. The next two items, both arrangements written for Farnham Youth Choir by David Victor-Smith, are well loved by their concert audiences, and are featured on their cassette tape. The evocative song 'The Way you look Tonight' by Jerome Kern has a flute obligato played by Joanna Victor-Smith, and 'The Rhythm of Life' comes horn the musical 'Sweet Charity'.

Programme Notes GRAMPIAN SCHOOLS' PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE, ABERDEEN Conductor: Ron Forbes Age range of performers: 14-17 years } Drumtime Excerpts from the Sbepherdess Ron Forbes & Olimney Sweep The seven members of the ensemble are from secondary schools in the Grampian Region and meet every Saturday morning at the Aberdeen Music Centre. All the members of the ensemble are taught percussion by Ron Forbes and since its inauguration the group has performed in France, Germany, Australia and many parts of Britain. Although the ensemble has made five previous visits to the Schools Prom, this will be the first time for four of its members. Both items on tonight's programme were composed especially for the ensemble by Ron Forbes and include 'Drumtime; a rhythmical exercise based on a whole tone scale.

HALESWORTH MIDDLE SCHOOL CHOIR, SUFFOLK

Wellor Galloping Home Grangetown Primary School is situated in an innerurban area of Cleveland close to the North-East coast. The group meets each lunch time to practise and is financially self-supporting. With approximately half the children leaving the school each year, the composition of the group is constantly changing. The children of Grangetown have been regular visitors to the National Festival of Music for Youth since 1983 and have been presented with no less than six Outstanding Performance Awards. In 1988 the group performed at Schools Prom North in Harrogate and Schools Prom Scotland in Glasgow, before undertaking a most successful visit to Australia to perform at World Expo '88 and the I.S.M.E. Conference. Tonight's programme consists mainly of Elizabethan tunes arranged in three parts for recorders.

Conductor: Christopher Barnetl Accompanist: Adrian Bush Age range of performers: 9-13 years If I Fell l.ennon & McCartney Missa Brevis Pacem (Gloria) Edward Gregson We Were Gathering up Trad., American the Roses Halesworth Middle School is a state school in North Suffolk, catering for children aged 9-13 years. The young choristers are experienced in working with contemporary composers and professional musicians. Their performance of 'Meet my Folks' at the 1987 King's Lynn Festival delighted composer Gordon Crosse and the distinguished audience included Poet Laureate, Ted Hughes. In April 1988 the choir performed the world premiere of Edward Gregson's 'Missa Brevis Pacem, with the composer conducting and in December of the same year Tchaikovsky's 'The Nutcracker Suite' with the Britten Pears Orchestra under the baton of Hugh Maguire. Both of these performances took place at the world renowned Snape Maltings which has strong links with the school. This summer they were presented with an Outstanding Performance Award at the National Choral Competition held at the Royal Festival Hall, London. Also in July, they recorded 'The Nutcracker Suite' with the orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. This recording is soon to be on release under Covent Garden's own label. Tonight's programme gives the choir the opportunity to once more perform Edward Gregson's 'Missa Brevis Pacern'. They will perform the Gloria from this work alongside Lennon & McCartney's popular 'If I Fell' and the traditional American song 'We Were Gathering up the Roses'.

Programme Notes HOLMFIRTH MUSIC SYSTEMS, WEST YORKSHIRE Conductor: Jim Morgan Age range of performers: 13-16 years Last Chance Catherine Ellis Holrnfirth High School is an 11-16 school in the heart of the summer wine country in West Yorkshire. The area is steeped in musical tradition, with many excellent choirs and brass bands. Holrnfirth Music Systems was set up to perform the piece being performed tonight. The music was originally written as part of a GCSE composition folio. It is based on Ine systems techniques of composers such as Steve Reich, wnere repetitions ofBound patterns can be used to create a thick and varied texture. This effect is particularly noticeabl.e in the percussion backing track, where differing rhythmic patterns intermingle to create a shifting accentuated collage. This backing track was recorded using an Archimedes 310 computer in the school's electronic music studio. The title 'Last Chance' refers not so much to the music but to the fact that this year was Catherine's last chance to get to the National Festival of Music for Youth whilst still a student at Holmfirth.

John Griswold West Side Story (Overture) Leonard Bemstein Sea Pictures, op. 37 (The Swimmer) Edward Elgar King Edward's is a sixth form college taking students from the metropoUtan borough of Duelley as well as other neighbouring authorities. Music plays an important part in the life of the college with ten concerts a year, the main activities being the orchestra, chamber orchestra, wind band and choir. Two other groups, the Sinfonia and the Collegiate Wmd Orchestra, include a number of past students and this evening's Symphony Orchestra is an amalgamation of the Sinfonia and I.ast year's College Orchestra and includes some students who joined the college in September this year. The College has been a regular supporter of the National Festival of Music for Youth since 1978 and has been represented in the Festival by at least one group every year since then. West Side Story (Overture) Leonard Bemstein First performed in 1957, West Side Story', contains some of the best-known music from the worl.d of musical theatre. It has infectious jazzy rhythms, beautiful lyrical melodies and that most essential element - vitality. The overture falls into three sections, the slower middle section acting as a foil for the more dramatic outer parts. Sea Pictures, op. 37 (The Swimmer) Edward Elgar This song cycle for contralto and orchestra was written in 1899 and the first performance was given by Gara Bu It in October of that year at a Norwich Festival Concert, with Elgar himself conducting. The fifth song. 'The Swimmer: has words taken from a poem by Adam Lindsay Gordon. In it, Elgar uses the full orchestra most effectively and dramatically. It portrays the sea in its stormy mood.

Hogarth Lear Orpheus in the Underworld Jacques Offenbach, (Finale) arT. Ray Woodfield Lady Manners School is a large mixed comprehensive school in Bakewell, Derbyshire. Besides Ine Brass Bands, the Music Department runs two wind bands, an orchestra, choirs involving 300 pupils and a variety of chamber groups. The School's first appearance in the National Festival of Music for Youth was in 1972 at Croydon and in 1982 the Lady Manners Bassoon Quartet played at the Schools Prom. Tonight's programme includes two arrangements of well-known tunes, the ever-popular Gershwln number 'Strike up the lland' and the finale of 'Orpheus in the Underworld' by Offenbach. They will also perform the 'Celtic Suite', which begins with a fanfare and is followed by a Welsh folk tune. After the trombones interrupt with a new theme, the two tunes vie with each oilier until played simultaneously to the end of the movement. 'Pop Goes the Posthom' is a light-hearted piece in bossa-nova style featuring three solo comets.

Nelson Age range of performers: 15-16 years Passacaglia on a Theme by Handel for Violin & Viola Johan Halvorsen Nicola and Katherine first appeared at the Schools Prom at a very tender age in a string trio and they have participated in the National Festival at the South Bank each year since then as members of different ensembles and orchestras working with Sheila Nelson. Firm friends since about the age of seven, they have shared the leadership of various quartets and quintets, always insisting on working together, so that by now they have an unusual unanimity of approach to the music. Their first Prom led to a television performance in 'Celebration; a programme to mark the opening of the now famous Limehouse Studios and they have appeared on television several times since. Katherine is principally a violinist and took up the viola in order to share with Nicola the special repertoire for violin with viola, particularly the Sinfonia Concertante of Mozart, which they performed recently with the Highgate Chamber Orchestra. Passacaglia on a Theme by Handel for Violin & Viola Johan Halvorsen This set of virtuoso variations over a repeated harmonic pattern is probably the composer's bestknown work, due to the artistry and humour with which he uses the various facets of the players' skills to throw new light on Handel's well-known theme. At times the players produce four-part harmony to vary the texture, and a final climax is reached with rapidly criss-crossing double stops for both instruments climbing to a grand mockHandelian cadence.

Musical Director: Graham O'Connor Age range of performers: 10-19 years Suite L'Arlt!sierme (Farandole) Georges Bizet Star Wars John Williams Orpheus in the Underworld (Finale) Jacques Offenbach Mexborough Music Centre is part of the Doncaster Education Authority and the band meets each Saturday morning for three hours. The band's players come from outlying districts of Doncaster and their musical director, Graham O'Cormor, is a peripatetic teacher for the Doncaster Authority and a former player with Grimethorpe Colliery Band. The band have a busy schedule of concerts and contests, and are the current youth champions of the Yorkshire Area Brass Band Association. They have been presented with an Outstanding Performance Award at the National Festival of Music for Youth for the last two years and appeared in the Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall for the first time last year - an experience they greatly enjoyed and are looking forward to repeating. Suite L'Arh!sierme (Farandole) Georges Bizet The Farandole is a drum used in the Basque regions of Spain and the music with its incessant rhythms is representative of this. Star Wars John Williams Written for the box-office hit, this theme music represents an exciting world of space. Orpheus in the Underworld (Finale) Jacques Offenbach This finale taken from Offenbach's light-hearted operetta is most commonly known as the Can-Can.

The quartet formed two years ago during class music lessons and are now an established ensemble performing regularly at school concerts and other events. Tonight is their first appearance at the Schools Prom. Spirituals probably originated in the eighteenthcentury hymns taught to North American slaves in an attempt to Christianise them. The pervading feeling of sadness in the spiritual reflects patient melancholy and a longing for a better after-life 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' is a typical example. 'Standing in the Need of Prayer' displays a personal conviction, while 'Go Down Moses' is more political in content, drawing a parallel between Israel's slavery in Egypt and that of the Negro in North America. From here it is a short step to another kind of protest song. 'Half the World' dates from the 1960s and is a type of modern day spiritual underlining a very contemporary concern.

Romanian, } Lewis (Andante & Allegro) Formed almost three years ago, Music Box perform on a unique combination of string and wind instruments from East and West, including mandolins, yangqins, guzheng, di, ruan, panpipes, flutes, autoharp and bowed strings. Many of these instruments exist in similar forms throughout the world with only slight differences in structure and playing technique, thus enabling the group to reproduce the general musical characteristics of countries as diverse as Chile and China. Music Box took part in the National Festival of Music for Youth for the first time last year and subsequently performed at the Schools Prom and Schools Prom North. The band tonight takes us to Greece with their performance of 'Mandraki; a lively number with an uneven five beats to each bar, and to Romania in 'Primavara de Craiova; two pieces featuring cimbaloms (or in this case Chinese yangqins), panpipes and bowed strings typically found in travelling Gypsy bands.

Haydn Formed four years ago, the aim of the Northampton Music School Chamber Orchestra is to develop promising young string players within a small stable group and to foster responsibility and self-reliance in performing, where practicable, without a conductor. The orchestra rehearses every Saturday afternoon and has explored a wide repertoire of string music from Baroque to modern day. Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major (1st movement) J. F. Haydn The C major Cello Concerto probably dates from around 1765. The first movement is marked moderato and maintains a loose ritornello-sonata pattern displaying a strong operatic influence. The concerto has only recently been discovered in a private music collection in Czechoslovakia and since its publication in 1963 the work has become a favourite amongst the world's renowned cellists.

Guy Woolfenden (Fosse Way, Notturno, Via Appia) Northamptonshire County Youth Concert Band was formed twelve years ago and is part of the highly successful Northampton Music School. The ensemble at present consists of 66 performers. It received the highest place award at the Boosey and Hawkes National Concert Band Festival in 1988 and 1989 and the Award for the outstanding soloist of the day went to the same band member on each occasion. The band was also presented with an Outstanding Performance Award at this year's National Festival of Music for Youth. Suite: S.P.Q.R. (Fosse Way, Notturno, Via Appia) Guy Woolfenden 'S.P.Q.R: was commissioned in 1988 as part of Warwickshire County Council's centenary celebrations. In response, Guy Woolfenden delved even further back than a mere one hundred years to encompass the Roman occupation of Britain. The standard of a Roman legion sometimes carried the letters S.P.Q.R. (Senatus Populusque Romanus - The Senate and People of Rome). The commission attempts to juxtapose and contrast the links between the Midlands and ancient Rome. Thus the River Avon becomes a tributary of the Tiber and the Fosse Way joins the Via Appia: all roads lead to Rome!

Programme Notes NORTON'S HOT SEVEN, ASHFORD Musical Director: John R. Hall Age range of performers: 16-18 years That's a Plenty Lew Pollack Creole Love Call Duke Ellington Darktown Strutter's Ball Shelton Brooks Norton's Hot Seven is a traditional jazz band comprising members of Norton Knatchbull School for Boys in Ashford, Kent. The musical director of the band is John Hall, Head of Music at the school, who plays in the band when there is no age limit! The players are also members of the Ashford Youth Jazz Orchestra, an activity of the Kent Music School in Ashford, . which is also directed by John Hall. Both bands toured Switzerland in 1987, Austria in 1989 and Norton's Hot Seven visited Germany this September. The band rehearses weekly and uses traditional jazz techniques - learning by ear and from chord symbols. The pieces played this evening demonstrate the lively mood of 'trad' jazz, from 1910-1930, an age of jazz which the band are keen to keep alive. All the solos heard this evening are improvised.

Braithwiate The Pan tonic All Stars steel orchestra was formed in December 1985 to provide steel music experience for the children of Stockport and the surrounding area. They are a very close friendly group and share a bond and affinity with each other that shows in their music. The enjoyment they gain from playing is infectious and passes to their audiences. They have now won the hearts of the people of Belgium, having made two visits during the year playing at venues throughout the country. They appeared on Belgium National Television for a half-hour spot and were heard on several radio programmes. The group have achieved much in their short existence: one of the greatest moments was gaining an Outstanding Performance Award at the 1989 National Festival of Music for Youth. Tonight's varied programme shows the orchestra's versatility and allows for true expression of all instruments.

Paul Severson The tradition of playing jazz at Poole Grammar School was begun by Bob Hayden-Gilbert, the previous director of music, who founded the Stompers in the early 19805. Since the group's inception they have delighted audiences with their gutsy performance of 'trad' jazz and are well known in their locality. The youngest member of the group is the pianist Neil Bottornley who is fourteen. The others, all sixth formers, are Duncan 'murder on the high Cs' Wilson on trumpet, Alex 'forget the playing, check out my hairstyle' Judd on clarinet, Rob 'wait till you hear my new solo' Avery on tenor sax, Mike 'hand me that plunger, son' Kneller on trombone, with Colin 'please don't watch my fingers' Catchpole on bass and Neil 'it's bliss, love' Turner on drums. Tonight the band will perform three classic jazz numbers with plenty of opportunity for virtuoso jazz solos.

The present group has sixteen members who attend ten different teaching establishments. The strength of the group is based on each member having a high individual standard, with festivals, competitions and examinations playing an important part in maintaining this standard. Membership is by invitation. The repertoire is large and wide-ranging but the group specialise in twentieth-century music with Staeps, Leenhouts, Britten, Part and Geysen in rehearsal at the moment. 1989 marks a special year for the Poulner Wind Group with three invitations to the South Bank in July for the National Festival of Music for Youth where they gained two Outstanding Performance Awards and the opportunity to perform at the Schools Prom.

David's Girls' Choir has enjoyed considerable success in competitions and concerts throughout Britain and abroad since its inception in 1972. Under their conductor, Jean Stanley-Jones, they have achieved numerous first prizes at prestigious festivals such as the UangoUen International Eisteddfod, where they came first three times in five years; The Montreux International Choral Festival in Switzerland; BBC Welsh School Choir of the Year, where they came first two years running in 1988路and 1989. The choir were also runners-up in this year's BBC2 Sainsbury's Choir of the Year Competition and more recently gained an Outstanding Performance Award at the National Choral Competition. As well as being invited to sing in concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and SI. David's Hall, Cardiff, the choir also makes regular television and radio appearances. The programme is intended to portray the versatility of the choir with items ranging from the brilliant, technically demanding 'God's Blacksmith' by KodaIy, to the beautifully haunting legato melodies of Cesar Franck's 'Panis Angelicus' and finally the teasing Gypsy rhythms of Geoffry Russell-Smith's 'Wedding Ring'.

ST. PAUL'S AND ALL HALLOWS JUNIOR SCHOOL STEELBAND, LONDON Conductor: Clyde Diaz Age range of performers: 10-12 years Selection from The Student Prince S. Romberg & D. Donnelly If I Fell Lennon & McCartney Quando, Quando M. C. Diaz St. Paul's and All Hallows Junior School Steelband has been established for approximately fifteen years. Their tutor Clyde Diaz spends two hours a week rehearsing the band. The children also practise every break-time on their own, to familiarise themselves with the tunes and instruments. Each year Mr Diaz also selects a number of third year children and these pupils are 'traine,d up' to take the places of the performers who leave the school at the age of eleven. The band took part in the National Festival of Music for Youth at the South Bank during July and they have also performed at the Coventry Steelband f-estival. The children also perfo rm at functions held by the local churches, schools, old people's homes, fairs and other activities in the community.

Sandbach High School is a girls' comprehensive school with 776 pupils. The present Jazz Group was formed by Will Dalton who is a member of the visiting instrumental team. The clarinet and sax players, who double on other woodwind instruments from time to time, have been studying with Mr Dalton since they were eight years old. During October 1988 the group toured Switzerland with the school's Festival Choir and since then have appeared regularly in South Cheshire at charity and social functions. The music played by the group is based on the Dixieland music made popular by Louis Armstrong and Kenny Ball although the arrangements have been adapted by Mr Dalton to accommodate the present line-up of instruments.

SCALBY SCHOOL JAZZ ORCHESTRA, SCARBOROUGH Musical Director: Tony Turner Age range of performers: 11-16 years Engine No. 9 res Hooper Harlem Nocturne Earle Hagen Bass Folk Song Stanley Clarke Scalby School is an 11-16 North Yorkshire comprehensive with just under 1000 pupils. The Jazz Orchestra has appeared regularly in the National Festival of Music for Youth and in both the Schools Prom and Schools Prom North. The musicians in the Jazz Orchestra are all members of the Scalby School Concert Band and other ensembles at the school. At Schools Prom North earlier this year the Jazz Orchestra appeared in disguise - as actors, singers and dancers when they performed a music theatre piece. The current ensemble are rehearsing a new work that has been written especially for the school to take to Germany and Holland ne.xt Easter. It carries With it a message of international friendship for the young people of Europe. Tonight's programme is a mixture of the unknown and the well-known:

Engine No. 9 Les Hooper A rock piece with some unusual twists, with solos by Peter James and Adam Carpenter (piano) and Angus Wright (trombone). Harlem Nocturne EarleHagen This number for saxophone solo, performed by Neil Pennock, is one of those tunes that everyone knows but many can't put a name to. Bass Folk Song Stanley Clarke Written by a legendary bass guitarist to test his own technique, this will be performed tonight by young soloist, Nick Boyes. Unusually, this piece also includes a piccolo and trumpet duet performed at a breath-taking speed by Elizabeth Clark (piccolo) and Nancy Evans (trumpet). Andrew Bridge (guitar) and Peter James (piano) also perform solos in this piece.

Programme Notes SURREY COUNTY YOUTH ORCHESTRA Conductor: John Fors/er Leader: CaJI1Y lames Age range of performers: 12-18 years Thm O'Shaoter (Overture) Malcolm Arnold Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 - 'Land of Hope and Glory' Edward Elgar The orchestra first came to p.rominencc in 1977 when they were awarded the Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup for the Most Outstanding Performance in the Orchestra Open Gass of the Nationa:! Festival of Music for Youth. Their reputation has steadily increased since that time as the result of very successful major concerts, broadcasts and television appearances. In 1984 and 1987 the orch.estra were selected to appear at the National Festival of Music for Youth this is their fourth appearance at the Schools Prom. During recent years the SCYO has performed under the baton of a number of conductors including Sir Charles Groves and Antony Hopkins and has played concertos with Jack Brymer, John Lill, Robert Cohen and the Chilingirian Quartet. Recent overseas tours have included Germany, Yugoslavia and France; a visit to Germany's 'Rhineland' is being organised for 1990. The SCYO is the most senior in a network of sixteen bands and orchestras supported by Surrey County Council's Education Committee as part of their Education Department's instrumental music service. The Orchestra rehearses each week and is staffed by a tearn of teachers and professional musicians who act as tlltors to the various sections. Young people who wish to study music seriously have found the intensive professional coaching available in the Orchestra invaluable. An increasing number are now finding their way into the music profeSSion, a few as soloists and recitalists, others as members of leading orchestras and many more as instru mental teachers in universities, coli eges and schools. The sao includes several National Youth Orchestra players and recently ex-members have auditioned successfuUy for the European Community Youth Orchestra. The Orchestra's very existence, its funding, staffing and pattern of work, reflect the very high priorify given by the county's Education Committee to provide mUSical, social and educational opportunities at the very highest level for young people with ability and commitment. Tam O'Shanter (Overture) Malcolm Arnold MaIcolm Arnold, at the age of 67, has created for himself a significant and unique position in

contemporary British music. This work, written at the age of 33 and based on Rober! Bums's poem, is typical of his craftsmanship and wonderful sense of humour. The story of Tam O'Shanter is ideally suited to the exuberant nature of most of Arnold's compositions. It concerns the herds refusal to heed his wife's warning about drunkenness and his erratic ride home on Meg the mare, from the Inn. Outing the slow introduction, two 'staggering' ba soons put us in the picture, and Tarn, meeting with a Witches' Sabbath dares to urge on some dancing. The intruder is not at all welcome and the witches set after him. The chase is furious, the rider not at al\ in control - but Meg is urged on. A reel acts as wild inspiration and Tarn eventually reaches relative safety at a stream - witches cannot cross water! There is a final spurt for this but Meg loses her tail in the process. Moral: if you drink don't ride. Once <\gain, the compo er has produced a brilliantly orchestrated work immediately attractive and appealing both to the listener and performer. Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 'Land of Hope and Glory' Edward Elgar This march, now so firmly associated with the Last Night- of th e Proms, was composed in 1901. Referring to the tune in the trio section, EIgar said to one of bis 'Enigma' friends, 'Dorabella, "I've got a tune that will knock 'em flat:' Its success al the London premiere under Henry Wood was frantic 'the audience simply rose and yelled - the only time in lhe history of the Promenade concerts that an orcllestral item was accorded a double encore'. Years later, Elgar referred to the 'Land of Hope and Glory' melody as a 'tune that comes once in a lifetime'. There is no doubt that the celebrated words of A.C Benson written for the Coronation Ode of 1902, as suggested by .King Edward VII, combined with the Trio tune, evoke a special patriotic fervour in the hearts of the British people, many of whom consider it a second national anthem.

WARWICKSHIRE YOUTH BRASS QUINTET, NUNEATON Musical Director: Jim Norden Age range of performers: 17-18 years Rondeau Jean-Joseph Mouret, arr. R. King Very Watery Music Jim Norden Alexander's Ragtime Band Irving Berlin, arr. J. Gale The Warwickshire Youth Brass Quintet was formed in 1981, in order to provide the opportunity for accomplished bras players in the county's schools to enjoy the best of brass ensemble music. The ensemble prepares its members for the highest standards of performance and prides itseU on its wide repertoire from the Renaissance to Ragtime, classical to contemporary. The ensemble has performed in Yark Minster and at the Liverpool Garden r~stival and in 1986 with the Coventry Cathedral Chapter House Choir, when they made a recording ofVenetian and Baroque music, much praised for both its content and quality, by Richard Baker on BBC Radio following its national release. In July 1989, the group played for the first time at the Nati.onal Festival of Music for Youth and later that month toured Austria. Rondeau Jean Joseph Mouret, arr. R. King The bright fanfare-like quality of this seventeenthcentury French dance shows the quintet off to great advantage. First used by the BBC as the theme for its masterpiece theatre, it has been adopted by the Quintet as its own signature tu ne. Very Watery Music Jim Norden This unusual rendition of HandeI's 'Water Music' has provoked great interest and was recently performed by the group on ITV Central News. Alexander's Ragtime Band Irving Berlin, arr. J. Gale Born in 1888 in Russia, [rving Berlin (formerly Israel Baline) settled in the USA in 1893. As compoSer of America's finest popular songs, he scored his first interna.tional success in ]911 with this exuberant work. Irving Berlin recently died at tile remarkable age of 101.

WELLS CATHEDRAL SCHOOL Patron: HRH The Prince of Wales HMC Independent Coeducational 806 Boarding and Day Places Over one hundred Specialist Musicians between the ages of 8 and 18 follow individually balanced programmes of intensive instrumental tuition, practice , chamber music and aural training with academic subjects.

Up to fifty of these children may receive assistance with fees from the Department of Education and Science and up to eight scholarships each year are available. Alternative financial support is sometimes available from other sources. Most board at school and study violin, viola , cello or piano but there are opportunities for outstanding woodwind, brass and percussion players. Since the foundation of the Specialist Music Scheme in 1970 most have taken Performers Courses at Conservatoires, though many have gained entry at Oxford, Cambridge or other Universities. Specialists give frequent public performances, including an annual Concert in London and in recent years have played in Hong Kong, Western Canada and the United States and much of Northern Europe. During April 1986 the Chamber Orchestra participated in a World Tour giving concerts in Singapore, New Zealand and Los Angeles. Future plans include another visit to Hong Kong and to the USSR.

F/1Z0LI Fazioli pianos are built by hand in a small workshop near Venice whose total annual output is a mere 50 grands, (and no uprights). Fazioli started 7 years ago and have yet to build their 300th piano. Despite their rarity and youth Fazioli are acquiring a growing and enviable reputation on the concert platform and have come a long way in a very short time. Fazioli pianos have already appeared at major venues including the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, Barbican Centre, Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, La Scala (Milan), and have been used by many top artists.
