This evening's young performers are drawn from schools and colleges from throughout the United Kingdom. They represent the very highest standards that can be attained at their stage of learning. To play to this standard means that they must be ready to face some daunting challenges. The joy of playing an instrument or singing well requires concentrated hard work and many hours of devoted practise. Not least amongst the challenges facing today's young musicians are the fundamental changes taking place in our society. There can be no doubt that sweeping changes in both funding and assessment are having far-reaching effects on the young and their education. We are already seeing the evidence of this in music education. The switch from central provision to locally managed facilities is already throwing up anomalies. It is still too early to measure the effect that Local Management of Schools will have on music in education in the long term. The early signs are not encouraging, with many music services being cut to the bone and some vanishing altogether. Cutting everything to the bone is all very well, in theory, but it is quite often the socalled fat that produces real brilliance. Leanness also means there is less to go round. Are we eventually going to see a return to the days when only those who can afford it can play? All is not gloom, however, as tonight will show. Music is still the jewel in the education crown and is recognised as such by the majority of our local authority education chiefs. We must hope that as even greater pressure is put on public spending, music will not be one of the 'soft options' for savings. Music for Youth's foremost aim is to Keep Music Alive in our Schools. We invite you to join with us, our sponsors and friends in strengthening our support for the teachers, school governors and local authorities who have made Britain's young musicians the envy of the world. Schools Prom Personalities Bob Hotness, Presenter. As the dreaded doodle-bugs rained down on London's suburbs one night towards the close of the Second World War, a young boy lying huddled beneath his blankets secretly listening to a small crackling radio set could have had no idea that his addiction to radio would one day lead to an acclaimed career in broadcasting. The boy's name was Robert Holness and his career over the last thirty-five years has spanned virtually every aspect of broadcasting in both radio and television. His sheer love and enthusiasm for his work have ensured not only his dual success on both the small screen and the airwaves, but also his enduring popularity with old and young alike. Twenty-nine years after making his television debut as host of Granada Television's early game show 'Take a Letter', he is known to an average audience of some twelve million viewers as host of Central Television's runaway success, 'Blockbusters', the first quiz show in Britain to air on a daily basis. Bob's special rapport with his eager young competitors and the consistently cliff-hanging, intelligent nature of the show won 'Blockbusters' the TV Times Readers' Favourite Game Show Award twice and four British Academy Award nominations for Best Children's Programmes. Now into its eighth series, 'Blockbusters' is also regularly voted the 'Best Game Show' by the readers of Britain's national newspapers. Bob Holness has achieved a great deal in his thirty-five-year career in radio and television, but he admits to a certain nagging regret. "I would dearly love to have played either the flute, or the trombone, my two favourite instruments and then I could make my own music. Still, there is plenty of time .. .! may yet get that done too ..."
Antony Hopkins CBE, Guest Conductor and Presenter. Has been associated with the Schools Prom from the first and has conducted the finale at everyone. He has lectured and conducted in many countries and his 'Talking About Music' programme on Radio 4 is now in its thirty-sixth year. He has now owned 55 cars including a light-weight racing Etype Jaguar which would go from 0-100 m.p.h. in 11.5 seconds! The current owner is Japanese and he paid a million pounds for it - sadly not to Antony. In recent years he has become a fanatical golfer and has now played 261 golf courses, as far west as Minneapolis, as far east as Hong Kong and as far south as Adelaide. Scotland remains the northernmost limit, but if he can only get a concert-date in Iceland, perhaps ... Richard Stilgoe, Presenter. Has a wife, an ex-wife, five children, a dog and a concrete mixer. From this you will gather that he is passionate and creative but essentially down to earth. He was born in Camberley and brought up in Liverpool, where he sang 'I Know That My Redeemer Liveth' at St. Agnes' Church and 'Rip it Up' at the Cavern. In trying to write a song as good as either of these, he has now written several hundred and played the results on radio's 'Today', 'Stilgoe's Around' and the award-winning 'Hamburger Weekend' and 'Used Notes'; on television's 'Nationwide', 'That's Life', (his own series and everyone else's) and on stages all over the world. His oneman show has been seen at festivals from Edinburgh to Adelaide. Clients for his bespoke cabaret act include IBM in Rhodes, Buttins in Toronto and H.M. The Queen in Windsor Castle. His twoman show with Peter Skellern ran happily in London's West End and has been seen in Monte Carlo and Madrid. For Andrew Lloyd Webber he wrote the words for the opening song of 'Cats', all of the words in 'Starlight Express' and
every other word in 'Phantom of the Opera'. This has paid for the concrete mixer and enabled him to found the Orpheus Trust, which helps disabled children play and enjoy music. Much of his work is now with children. He is director of the National Youth Music Theatre, for whom he wrote the words and music of 'Bodywork', a musical that takes place inside the human body. This had its premiere at the 1987 Edinburgh Festival and has now been recorded, with Peter Howitt as the Soul, Chas 'n' Dave as the Hair and Lonnie Donegan as the Appendix. He still occasionally sings 'Rip it Up', but now finds 'I Know That My Redeemer Liveth' a bit high. Larry Westland CBE, Founder and Executive Director of Music for Youth. Has directed and produced the Schools Prom since its inception in 1975. He is well known and respected for his work in youth music, primarily as Director of the National Festival of Music for Youth, which he co-founded in 1970. The National Festival is now the largest event of its kind in Europe and involves over 22,000 young musicians each year. He was awarded a CBE in the New Year 's Honours List in recognition of his work in youth music. He is involved in many other spheres of activity for young people, having co-founded the National Choral Competition with the Department of Education and Science in 1987; the Barciays Awards, also in 1987, with Barclays Bank and the British Youth Band Championships with Stephen Johnson and the British Youth Band Association in 1978.

Programme Notes AYLESBURY MUSIC CENTRE DANCE BAND, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE Musical Director: Nicholas Care Age range of performers: 14-21 years I Got Rhythm George Gershwin,
arr. Rob McConnell Aardvark Paul Higgs The Aylesbury Music Centre Dance Band (average age 17) is formed from the finest young jazz musicians in the Vale of Aylesbury, the county town of Buckinghamshire and home of the Aylesbury Duck! In recent years the band has enjoyed a very exciting and demanding schedule. Earlier this year, they shared the stage with MaynardFerguson in a concert for the Birmingham International Jazz Festival. They received the Outstanding Performance Award at the 1990 National Festival of Music for Youth, they recorded for BBC local radio and also recorded their second album 'Contraband' (sponsored by The National Westminster Bank and CBS Records) . They were also runners up in the BBC Radio 2 Big Band Competition youth section. In 1989, they won the title 'Daily Telegraph Young Jazz Band of the Year' (a competition attracting over 1000 entries).
They shared the stage of the London Palladium with John Dankworth, Cleo Laine, Don Lusher, George Chisholm and Mark Nightingale in the Gala Concert of the Soho Jazz Festival. They also featured on SKY TV and played at the Hayfield International Jazz Festival, the BASBWE Conference and the Jazz in Education Festival at the Royal Northern College of Music. George Gershwin, I Got Rhythm
arr. Rob McConnell In tonight's concert the band are playing two very demanding works. The first is an arrangement by the Canadian trombonist Rob McConnell who has gained notoriety for his frighteningly difficult scores. 'I Got Rhythm' is peppered with modern harmonies and perverted rhythms which distort the straight ahead fast swing on which the piece is based. The band go 'tongue-incheek' in the quasi-Dixieland section marked 'rinky-dink style' which forms a brief interlude before launching into a rip-roaring sax solo. Aardvark Paul Higgs This chart, a real scorcher, is LatinAmerican in flavour. Mter a spicy trombone solo and an extensive drum solo it screeches to a halt with some super B's from the lead trumpet.
BERKSHIRE COUNTY YOUTH CHOIR Conductor: Gillian Dibden Age range of performers: 14-18 years John Amner Come, Let's Rejoice Down by the Sally arr. John Vine Gardens El Grillo Josquin des Prez I Got Plenty George Gershwin O'Nuttin' The Berkshire County Youth Choir was formed in 1984 and specialises mostly in a cappella work. Members are drawn from all over the county of Berkshire and any young singer aged 14 and over is eligible for audition. The choir meets for two weekend courses each term and gives concerts throughout the county and further afield. Last summer, the choir enjoyed a European Tour, giving concerts in Paris, Strasbourg and Heidelberg and look forward in 1991 to a trip to Vienna. Recently they were presented with the Outstanding Performance Award at The National Choral Competition which took place at the Royal Festival Hall and this is their first appearance at the Schools Prom. Come, Let's Rejoice
John Amner
'Come, Let's Rejoice', is a lively motet from the Elizabethan period and is a paraphrase of the first two verses of the Venite. Down by the Sally Gardens
arr. John Vine
This is a popular folk song based on an Irish air with words by W.B. Yeats. El Grillo
Josquin des Prez
'El Grillo' (The Cricket) is an early work by one of the greatest chanson composers of his time. The Cricket is a mighty singer, says the song, very pretty and boasting. The stars seem brighter when he is singing. I Got Plenty O'Nuttin'
George Gershwin
'I Got Plenty O'Nuttin', is from the musical 'Porgy and Bess'. The lyrics are by Ira Gershwin and Du Bose Heyward.

They have won many major youth band contests and have a very busy concert schedule. The band is grateful to Davy McKee (Sheffield) Ltd for their kind extended support. Trumpeters' Holiday Bert Page This bright and exciting opening number features all the solo cornet players. Chris Haze/I, Mr. Jums arr. Catherall The 'Three Brass Cats' was originally written by Chris Hazell, the well-known trombonist, for brass quintet. Alan Catherall has skilfully arranged this haunting melody for the brass band. Procession to the Richard Wagner Cathedral arr. William Himes Taken from the opera 'Lohengrin' (1848), the piece tells of Eisa's journey to the Cathedral for her wedding. The music slowly crescendos as she draws nearer, and culminates as the Cathedral door opens. 'Procession to the Cathedral' provides opportunities for display by the soprano cornet, tenor horn and flugel horn.

Eleven-year-old Nerys Richards who tonight accompanies the choir on piano and harp is also proving to be a very talented cellist. Programme Notes DE FERRERS HIGH SCHOOL WIND BAND, BURTON-ON-TRENT Musical Director: Philip Marshall Age range of performers: 11-18 years Where No Man Has arr. Paul ]ennings Gone Before Round Midnight Cootie Williams/ Thelonious Monk, arr. Sammy Nestico Tequila Chuck Rio, arr. Paul Lavender The De Ferrers High School Wind Band contains about 70 pupils and is normally augmented by past pupils, parents and associates of the school. The repertoire has recently biased towards a big band style of playing, but the conductor, with his classical training at the Royal Academy of Music, tries to keep a good balance in the diet and so composers such as Prokofiev, HoIst, Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Wagner, Beethoven and Handel, as well as Sammy Nestico and the like, are all tackled with equal enthusiasm. During the past twelve years, the school has built on what was a good musical tradition prior to that time, to become one of the leading musical centres in Staffordshire. Literally hundreds of
pupils are involved in musical activity either as brass, wind, string or recorder players or as singers. Where No Man Has arr. Paul ]ennings Gone Before This is a compilation of science fiction film music, featuring numbers from 'Star Trek' (music by Alexander Courage), 'Superman' and 'Starwars' (music by John Williams). Round Midnight Cootie Williams/ Thelonious Monk, arr. Sammy Nestico This is a big band style number, beautifully arranged by one of Count Basie's writers/arrangers, Sammy Nestico. It features a lazy trumpet solo near the beginning and end, which is supported by sensuous jazz chords. The music was featured in a recent cult film of the same name. Chuck Rio, Tequila arr. Paul Lavender This is a fun piece with a Latin American beat. It was famous many years ago, but is still well known today. The audience should join in the shouting of the word 'Tequila' with deep voices at the appropriate times.
DEVON COUNTY YOUTH ORCHESTRA Conductor: Anthony le Fleming Leader: Timothy Alter Soloist: Nicola Loud Age range of performers: 11-19 years Max Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 inG Minor (3rd Movement) [gor Stravinsky Firebird Suite (Berceuse - Finale) Pomp & Circumstance Edward Elgar March No. 1'Land of Hope and Glory' The County Youth Orchestra is one of a number of Devon youth music groups which meet regularly throughout the year. Membership is drawn from school-age students and holiday courses are a feature of the orchestra's musical life. A recent trend is the development of residences, where the orchestra visits local communities encouraging and engaging in active participation. In addition to these various activities at home, a tour of Normandy is planned for next spring. Devon County Youth Orchestra has collaborated with several rising stars of the soloist world (recently including David Home and Sarah Briggs) and welcomes the opportunity of performing with Nicola Loud, who won the BBC's 'Young Musician of the Year' title for 1990. In addition to the concerto, Devon County Youth Orchestra will play the two concluding movements of the 'Firebird Suite' which formed the centrepiece of last season's repertoire. Pomp & Circumstance Edward Elgar March No.l'Land of Hope and Glory' The Pomp and Circumstance marches are a series of five military marches in symphonic form. The first march is now best known because of its link with the words 'Land of Hope and Glory'. This link came about when Elgar used both the words and music in his Coronation Ode to commemorate the Coronation of Edward VII. A hybrid it may be, but it never fails to stir the patriotic fervour associated with it.

Programme Notes FLAT PA VAN, GLASGOW Musical Director: Richard Tedstone Age range of performers: 11-18 years Two Pieces from M.A. Tedstone The Tempest Last Will and Testament A. Ho/borne Bransles C. Gervaise Glasgow Arts Centre is part of Strathclyde Regional Council's Community Education Service. The two pieces from The Tempest' were written by one of the group for a production at the Centre and feature crumhorns, a sub-contra bass recorder and an Irish bhodran as well as the more conventional knackers. The pieces were popular dances of the time and included in a tutor for young string players. The short programme finishes with a set of Bransles by C. Gervaise.
FRIDAY'S, CHELMSFORD COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL Conductor: Patricia Beckett Leader: Katherine Bamber Age range of performers: 14-19 years Holberg Suite Edvard Grieg (Prelude - Sarabande - Rigaudon) Chelmsford County High School is a girls' grammar school with 600 pupils coming from a 20-mile radius of the town. Music plays an important part in the life of the school with choirs, orchestras, windband, swingband and several chamber music ensembles. The school's string orchestra, with its membership of 40, performed at the National Festival of Music for Youth, receiving Outstanding Performance and Highly Commended Performance Awards. In January a smaller group were formed and were thrilled to be invited to perform at the National Festival in July. Four of tonight's performers played at the Schools Prom in 1988 as members of a septet, three members of which have now left to pursue their studies at Cambridge, Oxford and the Royal Northern College of Music.
THE FORBURY CONSORT, LEOMINSTER Musical Director: A/an Crumpler Age range of performers: 15-17 years Hans Wrich Staeps Sieben Flotentlinze (Sambuca) Giovanni Gabrieli Canzona Prima Capriol Suite Peter Warlock, (Bransle) arr. Taylor The Forbury Consort takes its name from the 14th-century Forbury Chapel in Leominster where it meets each week under the direction of its founder Alan Crumpler. The five players play Renaissance and Baroque recorders in consort, crumhorns, cello, sackbut, Renaissance harp, harpsichord, viols, percussion and also sing, performing music from the 12th to the 20th century in various parts of the country. In August they visited Hamburg where their performances received vivid acclaim and in October some members accompanied the well-known early dance group 'Passamezzo' in their American tour, providing the dance music. Trips are planned to Ireland and Japan in 1991. The consort was thrilled to be presented with an Outstanding Performance Award in the Senior Chamber Music Category at the National Festival of Music for Youth in July and are very excited to be here tonight. Sieben Flotentlinze HailS Ulrich (Sambuca) Staeps This is one of seven movements, each expressing the feeling of the dance described in its title, written in four parts by the contemporary composer Staeps. It has time changes in several places, detectable as short 'hiccups' in the pulse of the music. Giovanni Gabrieli Canzona Prima This contrapuntal piece would almost certainly have been played at the time by cornetts and sackbuts. Cornetts are wooden taper-bored instruments, about 60cm long, fingered like a recorder but played with an acorn cup sized mouthpiece, like a trumpet. They would have played the higher parts. The lower parts were played by sackbuts which were the forerunners of the trombone but with narrower bore and a deeper mouthpiece, made in sizes from alto to bass. Capriol Suite Peter Warlock, (Bransle) arr. Taylor This is a brilliant arrangement by Taylor from the original string orchestra suite by Peter Warlock in 1926, based on the tunes from Thoinot Arbeau's 'Orchesography' published in 1589 which was a dance tutor book. The Bransle is a circle dance performed in great variety, particularly in France.

GUILDHALL JUNIOR BAND, LONDON Musical Director/Conductor: John Clark Soloist: Matthew Baker Age range of performers: 13-19 years Fanfare & National an; Mark Hamlyn Anthem Bolero Maurice Ravel, Nessun Dorma
arr. Howard Snell Puccini, arr. Howard Snell
The band was formed in 1981 as the centre pin of the Junior Department's Brass Instrument Course. Conducted since 1983 by John Clark it has achieved considerable success in the National Festival of Music for Youth, gaining four Outstanding Performance and three Highly Commended Awards in the past seven years and has also twice won the Pontins' Youth Band Championships. The band can only rehearse once a week during term time because its members come from such a wide area. Bolero
Maurice Ravel, arr. Howard Snell
A piece that will need little introduction to music and skating fans alike! In this arrangement the tune begins unusually on muted tenor horn then is passed around the various principal players in the band culminating into a riotous climax. Nessun Dorma
Puccini, arr. Howard Snell
One of the most famous of all operatic arias. Recently it was used as the theme tune to the World Cup!
KING EDWARD VI COLLEGIATE WIND ORCHESTRA, STOURBRIDGE Conductor: John Griswold Age range of performers: 16-21 years Cake Walk Robert Russell-Bennett Incantation & Dance John Barnes-
Chance King Edward's is a sixth-form college, taking students from the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley as well as other neighbouring authorities. Music plays an important part in the life of the College with ten concerts a year given by the students as well as occasional recitals by visiting musicians. The main activities are the orchestra, chamber orchestra, choir and wind band and a number of chamber groups organised by the students themselves. Two other important ensembles are the Sinfonia and the Collegiate Wind Orchestra, both of which include former as well as present students. The Collegiate Wind Orchestra has been fortunate enough to have gained Outstanding Performance Awards in the Open Class for Wind Bands at the National Festival of Music for Youth in 1987, 1989 and 1990. This will be its first performance at the Royal Albert Hall. Cake Walk Robert Russell-Bennett This is the first of a set of splendidly tuneful pieces entitled 'Old American Dances' by a composer who is perhaps better known in the world of film and theatre music. Other movements have such entertaining titles as 'Western OneStep', 'Schottische' and 'Wallflower Waltz'. Somewhere in the 'Cake Walk' the flutes and clarinets play a short tune from Debussy's famous piece with a similar name. Incantation & Dance John Barnes-
Chance John Barnes-Chance is another American composer who is not very well known in this country but who has written some excellent music for wind band. The 'Incantation' starts very quietly with the flutes, other instruments being gradually added, and leads without a break into the 'Dance' which is fast and furious and uses a very large percussion section.

Edward Elgar Anthem Crown Imperial William Walton Coronation March The Latymer School is a large voluntaryaided grammar school at Edmonton in the London Borough of Enfield. Over recent years the School has gained a reputation for the quality and quantity of its music-making: it now boasts four orchestras, four choirs and numerous smaller ensembles. Pupils from Latymer are regular visitors to the National Festival of Music for Youth. This year four different groups conducted by David Elliott, the Director of Music, Susan Collier and Tim Kermode took part in the festival, giving over 10% ofthe School's pupils the opportunity to perform on the platform of the Royal Festival Hall. The First Orchestra was presented with the Outstanding Performance Award in the 'School and Area Orchestras' class. Crown Imperial Coronation March
William Walton
Walton composed his Crown Imperial March for the Coronation of King George VI. in 1937, following a commission from the BBC. The music was played at the Coronation service in Westminster Abbey for the entry of Queen Mary just before the ceremony began. After a rhythmic opening section there is a majestic cantabile melody, almost Elgarian in style, which returns at the climax of the work.
LEWIS GIRLS' SCHOOL CHOIR, YSTRAD MYNACH Conductor: Val lames Age range of performers: 13-19 years Charles Villiers Stanford The Blue Bird The Rhythm of Life Cy Coleman & Dorothy Fields Lewis Girls' School is a large comprehensive school, situated in the heart of the Rhymney Valley in Mid Glamorgan. The choir has been in existence under its present conductor and accompanist for the past seven years and in that time has built up an impressive reputation - regularly competing in Festivals and Eisteddfodau throughout Wales and the South West of England and also participating in several European Music Festivals. 1990 has been a very successful year for the choir. As a result of their success at the National Festival of Music for Youth in July, they were invited to give a series of concerts in the Rhymney Valley's twin town of Ludwigsburg in Germany. Soon after this visit came another European concert tour, this time to Austria, where the choir took part in several performances. Charles Villiers Stanford The Bluebird The Rhythm of Life Cy Coleman & Dorothy Fields These two strongly contrasting pieces illustrate the wide range of musical styles within the choir's repertoire. 'The Bluebird' features four soprano voices against a gentle background provided by the rest of the choir - it is a most evocative setting. The variety of textures within the modern and joyful 'The Rhythm of Life' is enhanced by the unusual and lively piano duet accompaniment.
MUSIC BOX, HA THERSHAW SCHOOL, OLDHAM Conductor: Christopher Lewis Age range of performers: 12-18 years Trad. Chile, Cutimuy arr. Christopher Lewis DanresoftheYaoPeople Trad. China, (Andante - Allegro - arr. Christopher Waltz - Andante - Allegro) Lewis The members of Music Box meet once a week to rehearse a wide variety of music from many countries. The instrumental nucleus consists of Western plucked strings and various pipes which has gradually been expanded through visits to the Far East by the conductor. Rather than aiming for authentic performances (which would clearly be unrealistic), the unique blend of East and West allows the group to explore many new combinations of instruments in a way that would not normally be encountered in traditional performances. This visit to the Schools Prom has been made possible by the generosity of Thorn Security Limited. Trad. Chile, Cutimuy arr. Christopher Lewis This piece has been arranged for the guitar-like charango and for sicus and maltas, both of which require two players who each have complementary sets of pipes tuned in thirds. Dances of the Yao People Trod. China, (Andante arr. Christopher Lewis Allegro - Waltz - Andante - Allegro) These five popular Chinese folk melodies are traditionally performed in many different versions. Here they are arranged for yangqin (dulcimer), guzheng (zither), dis (flutes) and western string instruments.

Blue Lake Overture
John Barnes-Chance 'Blue Lake' is an exciting modern American overture that continually develops in rhythmic complexities, making great demands on all sections of the ensemble. The Sussex Mummers' Chrisbnas Carol Percy Grainger The tune was first noted down in 1880 by Miss Lucy E. Broadwood at Lyne in Sussex, from the singing of Christmas Mummers called 'Tipteers' during their play of 'St George, the Turk and the Seven Champions of Christendom'. Although Percy Grainger arranged the carol for band, the scoring was completed by Richard Franko Goldman after Mr Grainger's death in 1961.

Programme Notes TRUSLER QUARTET, LONDON Tutor: Sheila Nelson Age range of performers: 11-13 years Quartet in F Major, op. 96: Antonin Dvorak The American (Allegro) The members of the Trusler Quartet belong to a larger group which meets each Sunday at Sheila Nelson's house in Cromwell Avenue, Highgate, to play string music of various kinds. This precise combination of players has not appeared at the National Festival before, but each of its members has already played at a Schools Prom or a Festival Prom. In the earlier stages of rehearsing the quartet was directed by its cellist, Alexandra, as part of her A-level course. It is pleasing to note that she obtained a good result and (more surprisingly) the quartet remained good friends! Quartet in F Major, op. 96: Antonin Dvorak The American (Allegro)
Each individual has to take a turn as soloist and accompanist in the quite complex texture of this music, which is rhythmical and lyrical by turns. The viola introduces the main theme and the constant semiquaver rhythms are stilled for the haunting second subject, played 'ppp' by the first violin. In the recapitulation this melody is echoed in the cello against a spiccato semiquaver background, a memorable example of Dvorak's high cello writing, often in the treble clef, as on this occasion. A fugal episode in the development is initiated by the second violinist, who alternates material with the first violin in a manner more reminiscent of the trio sonata than the early string quartet. It seems fitting that a movement where the participation is so equally spread should end with a triumphant unison affirmation of the tonic chord.

David Victor-Smith The Ascot Gavotte F. Loewe Walsh Middle School is situated on the SurreylHants border and draws its 280 pupils from the surrounding areas of Ash and Tongham. The choir was formed by David-Victor Smith in 1973, when the school was opened as one of Surrey's first purpose-built middleschools for children aged between 8 and 12 years (Surrey is soon to revert this policy, making Walsh once again a Junior School). Walsh choir is no stranger to the Schools Prom, having performed on three previous occasions, following Outstanding Performance Awards at the National Festival of Music for Youth and National Choral Competition. Their programme tonight is typically varied, beginning with an unaccompanied song from Africa, full of strong rhythms and close three-part harmony. This is followed by the modern favourite 'Bright Eyes', arranged by the choir's director. They finish with an excerpt from 'My Fair Lady' - 'The Ascot Gavotte'. The children have had a wonderful time producing the necessary upper-class accent to give this piece a really authentic flavour!

Programme Notes WARWICKSHIRE COUNTY YOUTH ORCHESTRA Conductor: Adrian Brown Leader: Matthew Gardner Age range of performers: 15-21 years Academic Festival Johannes Brahms Overture Pomp & Circumstance Edward Elgar March No. 1 - 'Land of Hope and Glory' The Warwickshire County Youth Orchestra has seen a number of changes since its formation in 1966. At first it was conducted by the music adviser, Eric Stevenson, and then by his successor, David Jones. Later, a policy of having guest conductors was introduced and included such people as Guy Woolfenden and Jonathan Del Mar. Originally a 'guest' conductor, Adrian Brown is now firmly established as the orchestra's principal conductor.
The orchestra meets mostly on holiday courses. As well as giving concerts throughout Warwickshire, there have been a number of visits abroad, notably to Malta, France and Holland. Next Easter the orchestra plans to give the first performance of a new work by Malcolm Williamson.
Johannes Brahms
Academic Festival Overture
In 1879 Breslau University, following the example of Cambridge, offered Brahms an Honorary Doctorate. Brahms wrote and conducted this work for the ceremony. It was not, perhaps, quite what was expected for the occasion, being based on four student songs, the last being 'Gaudeamus Igitur' (in which the students no doubt joined in with their own version of the words!)
Pomp & Circumstance Edward Elgar March No.l'Land of Hope and Glory' This march, now firmly associated with the Last Night of the Proms, was composed in 1901. Referring to the tune in the trio section, Elgar said to one of his 'Enigma' friends, 'Dorabella', "I've got a tune that will knock 'em flat." Its success at the London premiere under Henry Wood was frantic: "the audience simply rose and yelled - the only time in the history of the Promenade concerts that an orchestral item was accorded a double encore". Years later, Elgar referred to the 'Land of Hope and Glory' melody as a 'tune that comes once in a lifetime'. There is no doubt that the celebrated words of A.c. Benson, written for the Coronation Ode of 1902, as suggested by King Edward VU, combined with the trio tune, evoke a special patriotic fervour in the hearts of the British people, many of whom consider it a second national anthem.

Alex Benson has written the method in such a way as to train not only "keyboard players" but also general musicians. By using this method, the one-manual keyboard - with sonorous solo voices and integrated bass, guitar and drums in the automatic accompaniment will become an attainable, easy-to-operate "House-Band" .

SPECIALIST MUSICIANS AT ETON COLLEGE Eton College offers unrivalled conditions and facilities for musicians. Careful arrangements are made for the curriculum of each specialist musician, to give time during the school day for his lessons and practice. The team of eight full-time staff and thirty-six visiting teachers is supplemented by many distinguished visitors who give master classes, talks and recitals. The large number and high quality of musicians at present in the school has enabled the First Orchestra to give performances of such works as Brahms' 2nd Symphony, Bernstien's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Rachmaninov's 3rd Piano Concerto. A total of 200 boys sing in the big school choir. The College Chapel Choir have recently visited France, America, Israel and the Arabian Gulf, and made two commercial records and two private cassettes, singing while at school for two or three choral services a week. At present five members of the school play in the National Youth Orchestra. In the last five years twenty-one boys have gained choral and organ scholarships to Oxford and Cambridge, this year including the organ scholarships at both Christ Church, Oxford and King's College, Cambridge. Last year three of our organ pupils passed their ARCO diploma, taking between them, six out of the seven prizes and this year one of them has gone on to gain his FRCO with the top prize. The school possesses six pipe organs. In addition to these musical facilities, music specialists take full advantage of Eton's outstanding academic teaching. In order to ensure that these opportunities are not denied to any deserving musician of high calibre, the scholarship fund has recently been increased to offer boys eight major scholarships per year. In cases of need all Eton scholarships can be supplemented up to the value of the whole school fee. Boys should be under Fourteen on 1st September of the year of entry.
If you wish to inspect the work of the department, please write for a Music Diary to: Ralph Allwood Precentor and Director of Music Eton College Windsor Berks SL4 6EW An informal preliminary audition and tour of the school may also be arranged.

Specialist groups include the String Ensemble, directed by Rodney Friend, and the C20 Ensemble, conducted by Edwin Roxburgh. Former students of the College form a significant proportion of the membership of leading national orchestras, reflecting the necessity of adequate orchestral training during the period of study. Visiting Professors include George Benjamin, Dorothy De Lay, Evelyn Glennie, Igor Oistrakh, William Pleeth, John Wallace and Grigory Zhislin. Scholarships are available to outstanding applicants. The Prospectus, containing all details of facilities and entrance procedures, may be obtained from the Admissions Tutor.
