The Schools Prom is twenty-one today! We hope you enjoy the celebration and the concerts we have arranged for you. We hope also that you will find much to delight you, as you experience the extraordinary talent of five hundred of B.ritain's finest young musicians and smgers. As we enjoy this special evening, I shall be made even more aware of the vital role of our sponsors, supporters and the Friends of Music for Youth. Through their generosity and long-term investment in education and the arts, many thousands of young people are able to benefit from creative involvement in public performances. Without the support of companies such as British Aerospace, Commercial Union, Glaxo Wellcome, Thorn EMI and W H Smith, concerts and festivals like ours would cease to exist. The very worst that could happen to these Schools Prom concerts and the world of youth music is for it all to be taken for granted. Each year we return to the Royal Albert Hall to reaffirm our faith in encouraging the creative talents of our young performers and to ask you to join us in keeping music alive in our schools. Schools Pront Personalities Bob Holness, Presenter. Thirty-four years after making his television debut as host of Granada TV's early game shows, 'Take a Letter' and 'Junior Criss-Cross Quiz', Bob Holness is known to an average audience of some 12 million viewers as host of Central TV's runaway success 'Blockbusters'. Bob's special rapport with his eager young competitors and the consistently cliff-hanging, intelligent nature of the show ha ve twice won 'Blockbusters' the TV Times Readers' Favourite Game Show Award and five British Academy Award nominations for Best Children's Programme. Bob can now be seen on Saturday nights, hosting Britain's biggest ever quiz show - 'Raise the Roof' . Bob has most recently been heard on Radio Two's 'Bob Holness and Friends', which featured a wealth of celebrity guests from the world of theatre and music, and on his Sunday morning breakfast slot, 'The Bob Holness Show'. To top it all, Bob's is one of the best known voices on BBC World Service, for whom he has worked, every week, since the mid-sixties. His enormously popular show, 'Anything Goes', which is transmitted three times a week, is now in its 19th year. Antony Hopkins CBE, Guest Conductor and Presenter, has been associated with the Schools Prom from the first and has conducted the finale at everyone. He has lectured and conducted in many countries and his 'Talking About Music' programme on Radio 4 extended over thirty-six years and was sold to forty-four countries by the BBC.
He is currently writing a book on Beethoven's concerti. He has now owned sixty-one cars, including a lightweight racing E-type Jaguar which would go from 0 to 100 m.p.h. in 11.5 seconds! The current owner is Japanese and he paid a million pounds for it - sadly not to Antony. He is a fanatical goUer and has now played nearly 300 goU courses, as far west as Minneapolis, as far east as Hong Kong and as far south as Adelaide. Finland remains the northernmost limit, but if he can only get a concert date in Iceland, perhaps ... Actually he was there briefly as part of a cruise to the North Cape and back. He didn't see a golf course but he did win the putting competition on board ship and has a photo of himself putting in broad daylight at midnight! RiChard Stilgoe, Presenter, got into show business via St. Agnes Church Choir in Liverpool, The Cavern Club and The Cambridge Footlights. His biographical details also reveal that he spent time as an actor, a door-ta-door salesman, an aspirin packer, an assistant at Harrods and a Religious Knowledge teacher - experience which he has doubtless put to use in his versatile career since then. He has written hundreds of songs, and several books and plays. As a lyricist, his credits include the Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals 'Starlight Express' (for which he wrote all the words) and 'Phantom of the Opera'. The words for the opening song of 'Cats' are also his. His musical for children, 'Brilliant the Dinosaur', has been staged at Chlchester Cathedral, the Royal Festival Hall, Birmingham
Symphony Hall, and in schools all over the country. He has also written a concert piece, 'The Big Bang', and his BBC Radio production, 'Who Pays the Piper?', won the Monte Carlo Prize and the Prix Italia. His successful musical partnership with Peter Skellern has taken them on tour throughout the UK and to Australia. Never has a show been more aptly named than his recent radio series, 'Stilgoe's Around'. Larry Westland CBE, Founder and Executive Director of Music for Youth, has directed and produced the Schools Prom concerts since their inception in 1975. He is widely respected for his work with young musicians and was awarded the CBE in 1991 for his services to music and education. Music for Youth's National Festival and Schools Prom are the largest and most successful events of their kind in Europe. They greatly enhance the musical life of the United Kingdom and are widely acclaimed throughout the world. The National Festival is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary in 1995 and 50,000 young musicians, singers and dancers will take part in its year-long programme of events. Larry Westland is involved in many other spheres of arts actiyitv for young people, having co-founded the National Choral Competition in 1987, the Barclays Music Theatre Awards, also in 1987, Clnd the British Youth Band Championships in 1978. In April this year he, \\路ith BT, launched BT Dance '%. a national celebration of \路outh and dance.

Ray Farr Three Haworth Impressions Gordon wngford Bradford Youth Brass Band was formed two years ago and is the central brass band of the Bradford Music Service. Members are drawn from throughout the LEA. The band meets on a weekly basis during term-time and has played in several local concerts. 'Colonel Bogey' was originally composed by Kenneth Alford and adapted and rescored by Malcolm Arnold for the film 'Bridge on the River Kwai': this brass band arrangement is by Ray Farr. 'Three Haworth Impressions' (of which two will be played), by Gordon Langford, is about the area around Haworth, Yorkshire, the home of the Bronte sisters. Music plays an important part in their school life; they have no individual music tuition, but all children in Year Two have the opportunity to play the recorder. Singing is a vital part of their school life and they use it as a way of approaching all aspects of the curriculum. Manor County is very proud to be taking part in their first Schools Prom at the Royal Albert HalL The children will be performing excerpts from 'Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo' and 'No, No, Noah!'. A special feature will be an original composition entitled 'Storm Music' written and performed by a group of seven-year-olds. The children performing the dance helped to design their own costumes and choreograph their movements.

Crosfields Prep School for Boys in Reading runs four choirs, and all of them on a voluntary basis. This is the main choir (known inside school as the 'chamber choir' as it originally had far fewer members). Rehearsals are held three times a week, before school and at lunchtime, \\'ith an occasional Saturday morning thrown in. The choir is rooted in the Anglican Spiritual tradition, but aims to sing as wide a variety of music as pOSSible. Kenneth Leighton's 'Easter Sequence', of which the Gradual is a very small extract, was composed for the 'Berkshire Boy Choristers' - as they were then known - in 1969. What Do We Plant?' by Copland can only be described as a busy building song. The programme ends in unashamedly romantic fashion with Clements lush setting of Keats' poem. (Apologies to Keat,' fans for the slight alteration to the titlei.
The joint band of Northampton School for Boys and Northampton School for Girls has been in existence since January 1991 . They perform regularly at school concerts and at other venues in Northampton, and have been,on tour to Germany and France. In the past two years the band has reached the finals of the Boosey & Hawkes National Band Festival, gaining a Silver Award in 1994 and Gold in 1995. They have previously gained a Highly Commended Award in the National Festival of Music for Youth, and this year were very proud to gain an Outstanding Performance Award. The band likes to tackle challenging repertoire, and will be giving the world premiere of a piece by the British composer Adam Gorb at the 1995 BASBWE Conference (British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles). 'Aqua ra', composed in 1993 by John Higgins, is a powerful representation of different aspects of the sea, with five sections: 'Cradle of Life', 'Kingdom of the Great Whales', 'Coral Reef', 'Predators' and 'Aftermath' . 'Strike Up The Band' is a light-hearted treatment of Gershwin's well-known melody and a real showpiece for the band, managing to poke fun at some of the stereotypes of band marches.

Programme Notes PANTONIC ALL STARS STEEL ORCHESTRA, CHESHIRE Musical Director: Scot! Sinkler Age range of performers: 13-19 years The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba GF Handel, arr. S Sinkler Pop Medley arr. S Sinkler 1995 is a special year for the Pan tonic All Stars because it is the 10th anniversary of its formation. The orchestra was formed to bring Steel Music to the youth of Stockport. This is the band's fourth successful year attending Music for Youth's events, and we are delighted to be given the opportunity to participate in the 21st Schools Prom, and wish the organisation continuing success. Throughout the years the orchestra has maintained a busy schedule and one of 1994's highlights was an appearance on BBC Television's 'Blue Peter'. The members are continually pushed to limits barely recognised in steel orchestras by their director, Scot! Sinkler, and such limits are illustrated in their most recent classical piece, The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba', as performed this evening. STOKESLEY SCHOOL MADRIGAL CHOIR, NORTH YORKSHIRE Musical Director: Paul Busby Age range of performers: 18 years Sing We and Chant it Thomas MOTley All Creatures Now John Bennet 11 est Bel et Bon Passereau Weep 0 Mine Eyes John Bennet Contrapunto Bestiale alle Mente Adriano Banc/lieri Stokesley School is situated on the northern edge of the picturesque North Yorkshire moors. As well as performing madrigals together, the singers have two other things in common - they were in their final year of sixth-form studies last year and they all play orchestral instruments ranging from saxophone to gemshorn! Members of the group are drawn from the school's Senior Choir who toured Belgium in 1992. Why madrigals? Some were singing madrigals during an 'A' level music lesson and asked to sing more. Little did they know where it was to lead them! Madrigal lyrics often refer to a wide variety of creatures. After introducing themselves in the first item, you will hear several references to them during our performance tonight, beginning with 'All Creatures Now' . In '11 est Bel et Bon' watch out for the pecking chickens who taunt the husband and his flighty wife. The theme and mood changes with 'Weep 0 Mine Eyes'; a poignant reminder that this may be the choir's last performance. Creatures reappear with a vengeance in the final madrigal where even humans - having over-indulged - begin to behave like animals.
EXETER SCHOOL & ST MARGARET'S SCHOOL CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Musical Director: Simon Foxall Age range of performers: 13-19 years Symphony No. 1 in C, 1st movement Ludwig van Beethoven The players in the ensemble come from two neighbouring schools in Exeter. There are four joint orchestras and three bands as well as a number of choirs and chamber groups. The chamber orchestra won the Outstanding Performance Award at the National Festival of Music for Youth this year and in 1993. The Schools' Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra have both made previous appearances at Schools Prom concerts. Beethoven's First Symphony was written in 1799 by which time he had already composed two piano concerti and many smaller pieces. The first movement has a slow introduction which starts in the 'wrong' key before lead ing to a vigorous allegro. Sudden dynamic contrasts and important woodwind effects are prominent features of the music. JAZZA, NORFOLK Musical Director: Gill Alexallder Age range of performers: 15-1 7 rears One for Daddy-O Nul Adder/elJ Oink, Oink, Oink Gill Alexander Jazza was formed six wars ago, starting as a fourpiece band (trumpet, alto, drums, bass) and gradually expanding to a six-piece (adding tenor and guitar). Ther perform regularly in London and East Anglia and have won many awards. The\' haw appeared on ITV, BBC and Anglia Telerision and played at the 100 Club and the Bulls Head, Barnes. They are featured in lectures gi\'en bv Gill Alexander, their musical director, on teaching jazz to the young. The blues, 'One for Daddy-O' was written by Nat Adderley for his brother 'Cannonball', The melody is written in the minor mode but is backed by major chords. 'Oink, Oink, Oink', written especially for Jazza, opens with the bass depicting the pig's snort and has a Jazz-Rock two-in-a-bar feel. The soloists have open length solos, first one scale, then the other. Technically, it is quite a challenging piece so another pOSSible reason for the unusual title is that the band say it is a 'pig' to play!
BIRMINGHAM SCHOOLS' SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Conductor: Peter Bridle Age range of performers: 14-19 years Short Ride in a Fast Machine John Adams Sergei Prokofiev Romeo & Juliet: The Death of Tybalt Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1 Edward Elgar 'Land of Hope and Glory' Birmingham Schools' Symphony Orchestra is one of twenty central ensembles run by the Birmingham Music Service. The orchestra aims to provide its members with the opportunity to explore the symphonic repertoire and also music from opera and ballet. Each year at least one contemporary piece is programmed. A highlight of this season will be a performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto with Tasmin Little in Symphony Hall, Birmingham. 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine', by John Adams, is a short, rhythmically vital piece which was first performed in 1986 at the Great Woods Festival, Massachusetts by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. It has since become the most popular orchestral piece written by a living American composer. 'Romeo and Juliet' is one of the greatest ballet scores. The movement to be performed tonight is representative of the ballet as it features music that is fast and furious with a high emotional charge. 'Pomp and Circumstance' was composed in 1901. Referring to the tune in the trio section, Elgar said to one of his 'Enigma' friends, 'Dorabella', "I've got a tune that will knock 'em flat" . In that same year, the march was played at a London Promenade concert conducted by Henry Wood. The march was indeed a knock-out, the audience calling for three encores.

C Wormald Fanfare for a New Age Goff Richards Jubilation! James CtmlOw Firebird (Ballet) Igor Stmvinsky, arr. Ray Farr Smithills School is an LEA secondary comprehensive school with fifteen hundred pupils and an ethnic population of over 30%. The school has five bands, three choirs, and a number of award-winning ensembles, all formed since the appointment of Christopher Worm aid as Head of Music in 1991. The Senior Brass Band has won two national titles in the last two years, appeared on GMTV and played in London six times to date. The 'Fanfare and National Anthem' was arranged especially for Smithills School Band in 1994 by Christopher Wormald. The 'Fanfare for a Ne,,' Age' was published this year by Goff Richards and tonight will be the first time the band has performed it in public. Both the exciting 'Jubilation!' by James Curnow and the dramatic ballet music from Stravinsky's 'Firebird' were played by the band at the Royal Festival Hall in July this year. CLEVELAND CHOIR, MIDDLESBROUGH Musical Director: John Forsyth Age range of performers: 14-20 years My Spirit Sang All Day Gemld Fil/:I Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue arr. Alan Wood, Byker Hill Phllip WIlbl/ Cleveland Youth Choir was formed by John Forsyth in 1992 as part of a county-wide singing initiative. The group is now well established with a strong reputation for both a cappella and accompanied repertoire. In 1994 the choir were regional winners of the Sa ins bun' Choir of the Year competition and follO\\'ed that success with a concert tour of France. Since its success this year in the National Festi\'al of [\'!u"ic for Youth, the choir has toured Austria and Hungary. 'My Spirit Sang All Day' is a choral gem in miniature, Its wide dynamic range and tonal diversity contrast perfectly with lyrical elegance and a variety of textural colours. 'Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue' is a favourite from the choir's popular repertoire. 'Byker Hill' is a North East folksong about pit life. Philip Wilby's brilliant setting juxtaposes dynamic contrast, constant 3/4 and 3/8 meter, crisp syncopations and a final electric change of pace, making it exciting and compelling.
ABBOTSMEAD JUNIOR SCHOOL, BARROW-IN-FURNESS Musical Director: Judlth Pool Choreographer: Gill Ellwood Age range of performers: 8-11 years A Day in the Rain Forest Abbotsmead Junior School Do We Listen? Douglas Coombes Abbotsmead Junior School is in Barrow-inFurness, Cumbria. The children were delighted to win the Outstanding Performance Award at the National Festival of Music for Youth on the 'Juniors' day. Music plays an important part in the life of the school, and the choir regularly performs in concerts in Barrow and the surrounding area. 'A Day in the Rain Forest' is an original composition by the children. Through creative use of costume, instruments and song, the choir has tried to evoke the atmosphere of the forest floor from the waking sounds of the early dawn to the rustles and cries of the dark night. The children conclude with a song of pleading for the world to 'listen' to the needs of the forest and to save it from destruction. We hope this provides a thought-provoking end to our presentation. DAME ALICE OWEN SCHOOL ORCHESTRA, POTTERS BAR, HERTFORDSHIRE Conductor: Robert Pepper Age range of performers: 12-18 years Things to Come Suite (excerpts): Arthur Bliss Ballet for Children, Attack, March Dame Alice Owen School Symphony Orchestra has been in existence in its present form for over ten years. Since 1985 music at the school has grown to a point where there are now four orchestras, three bands, two choirs, a choral society, numerous chamber ensembles and a Saturday Morning Music Centre attended by nearly 200 pupils from the surrounding area. The Symphony Orchestra has enjoyed considerable success in recent years. It has appeared at the National Festival of Music for Youth on three occasions and this year was selected to take part in "Youth Makes Music" at the Royal Albert Hall, organised by Rotary Club International. Tours abroad have included visits to Paris and the Loire Valley in 1993 and Salzburg in 1995. Last October, members of the orchestra were invited to perform at the Grant Maintained Schools Formal Dinner in the presence of the Secretary of State for Education and Employment, the RI. Hon. Gillian Shephard, MP, The orchestra's future plans include an appearance at the Roya1 Festival Hall next July and more touring. Sir Arthur Bliss excelled at composing ballet and film music. 'Things to Come' was written in 1935 for the film of H G Wells' classic tale in which the author em'isages our present civilisation Jestrowd b\' a world ,,'ar and a finer world arisin~ iron; the ashes of the old. 'Ballet for Ch!lJ;en' accompanies the opening of the film in ,,'hich chilJren are celebrating Christmas in party mooJ . lt is a charming miniahlre; bright and rh\·thmic. ':'..ttack' depicts the destruction of the old world in the holocaust of air-\,'arfare. Sharp rhythmic figures on strings punchlate a strident theme in the wind. 'March' is a march of war, not victory or heroism. Men and machines are on the move as the introduction gathers momentum. Even the magnificent A major outburst is tinged with hysteria in the form of jolting syncopations and false relations. YSGOL GLANAETHWY, BANGOR Musical Director: Elnion Dafydd Conductor: Cefln Roberts Age range of performers: 13-19 years Bias y Pridd Gareth Glyn Ysgol Glanaethwy is a performing arts school based in Bangor, North Wales, which was established in 1990, 1995 has again been an extremely busy year for them, competing in several festivals, 'eisteddfodan' and concerts. The highlight was a recent trip to Bulgaria to an International Children's Festival. The directors, Cefin and Rhian Roberts, also celebrated at the beginning of October with the opening of their own premises for the school. Our programme this evening is based on traditional Welsh songs ranging from a cryptic round, a sad farewell song, a song which makes fun of an old maid, to a haunting melod\' sung b\' a young boy to his girlfriend. We finish our c\'Cle with a fun folk song called 'De\'vn \' Bwin' I\'hich is about lots and lots of apples' 19

Programtne Notes SCISSETT MUSIC CENTRE BIG BAND, HUDDERSFIELD Conductor: Alex Arkwright Age range of performers: 14-18 years Hot Wire Blai,., arr. Higgins othing to It Keith Morris Scissett Music Centre is one of the seven area venues run by Kirklees Music School in West Yorkshire. This is the band's second successive appearance at the Schools Prom. In 1994 they won the Highly Commended Award at the National Festival of Music for Youth and this year they were delighted to win the Outstanding Performance Award. This will be Alex Arkwright's final performance with the group as in September he took up the post of Head of Wind at Marlborough College, Wiltshire. Scissett Music Cen tre Band believes very strongly that improvisation is the key distinction between jazz and most other forms of music. Not only do their soloists improvise but they try to crea te as many opportunities for whole band improvisation as possible. Their gUidelines are form, style and harmonic structure. This can result in some fascinating sounds not normally associated with the big band genre. They work by taking a piece of music and then adding whole sections of 'instant composition'. BERKSHIRE PERCUSSION AND MARIMBA ENSEMBLE Conductor: Andy Leask Age range of performers: 12-16 years Ronda a la Turk WAMozart, arr. lames L Moore Rafael Hemandez, El Cumbanchero arr. P/,il Faini The Berkshire Young Musicians Trust was established in 1982 to safeguard and enhance music education for young people in the Royal County of Berkshire. In 1992, percussion ensembles were formed in each of the four area music centres in order to give students the opportunity to rehearse and perform in ensembles with others of similar ability. The members of the Berkshire Youth Percussion/Marimba Ensemble are drawn from Music Centres and schools in Berkshire. Two members of the Ensemble have gained places at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester and the Birmingham Conservatoire. Mozart wrote 'Ronda a la Turk' in 1778 as the last movement of his Piano Sonata in A, K331. Turkish military music, with its fondness for percussion instruments, was very popular in Europe at the time, and both Mozart and Beethoven wrote pieces 'alla Turca'. The strong rhythmic character of the music makes it well suited to this adaptation for Marimba Ensemble. Phil Faini, the American percussion ensemble director / composer, has successfully arranged 'El Cumbanchero' for percussion ensemble. The piece is based on a frequently-used mambo rhythm, with a driving Latin feel and using both tuned and untuned percussion instruments.
GAMPA STRING ENSEMBLE, GLOUCESTERSHIRE Conductor: David Curtis Age range of performers: 10-20 years Simple Symphony Benjamin Britten GAMPA (the Gloucester Academy of Music and Performing Arts) Junior Department opened in September 1993 to provide speCialist tuition on Saturdays in term-time for talented musicians and actors. Pupils are drawn from across the South West and are able to combine both music and drama skills. GAMPA works alongside many other organisations; the South West branch of the National Children's Orchestra meets regularly at GAMPA. Many GAMP A pupils are members of the National Children's Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and the National Youth Music Theatre. Britten's 'Simple Symphony' is based on material which the composer wrote between the ages of nine and twelve (1923-26). A few years later he reworked this material, originally for piano, into a four-movement work for string ensemble. SLAPSTICK BASS, READING, BERKSHIRE Musical Director: Roland Robertson Age range of performers: 17-18 years Unsquare Dance Dave Brubeck Something Strange Anon Peter Williams (flute/vibes), Jeffrey Sin ton (bass), Robert Wescott (piano) and David Witcher (drums) are all in their final year at Bradfield College, an independent boarding school in Berkshire. The band first got together eighteen months ago and have since played for numerous successful functions. Under the guidance of their musical director, the group aims to use written parts as little as possible and evolve its own ideas through regular improvisation and rehearsal. 'Unsquare Dance' is by Dave Brubeck, the pioneer of unusual time signatures in jazz. Here a standard blues is recast in 7/4 time, and played ferociously fast. 'Something Strange' is a more soul-flavoured blues with several improvised solo opportunities. Peter thinks he heard it on a latenight radio show - but who wrote or played it remains a mystery. Can anyone out there help?
OXFORDSHIRE COUNTY YOUTH ORCHESTRA Conductor: Richard Hallam Age range of performers: 14-20 years Tarn O'Shanter Malcollll Arnold Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1 Edward Elgar 'Land of Hope and Glory' The Oxfordshire County Youth Orchestra is the most advanced of four holiday orchestras run by the county council's music service. In addition to the many ensembles and lessons that take place weekly, this orchestra gives talented young people aged between 14 and 20 marvellous social, cultural and educational experiences as well as the more obvious musical ones. Like so much of Malcolm Arnold's music, 'Tarn O'Shanter' is an excellent work for young people to play and for an audience to listen to. Based on Robert Burns' poem, the score includes the lines:
NolV wlta this tale 0' trlltlt shall read Ilk man and motlter's son, take heed Take Iteed wltene'er to drink you are inclined Or clItty-sarks nm in your mind Think, ye may buy ti,e joys o'er dear Remember Tam O'Slwnter's mare. The Pomp and Circumstance Marches are a series of five military marches in symphonic form. The first march is now best known because of its link with the words 'Land of Hope and Glory'. This link came about when Elgar used A C Benson's words with his music in his Coronation Ode for the Coronation of Edward VII in 1902. A hybrid it may be, but it never fails to stir the patriotic fervour associated with it.

Programme Notes GUILDHALL JUNIOR BAND, LONDON Musical Director: John Clark Age range of performers: 10-18 years Fanfare for the Common Man Aaron Copland National Anthem Hoedown from Rodeo Aaron Copland Let's Face the Music and Dance Irvil1g Berlin, arr. Goff Richards Aaron Copland remains one of America's most popular composers. Both pieces being performed tonight come from his middle period where his style became more lyrical and melodic, drawing on elements of American folk music for inspiration. Both 'Rodeo' and the 'Fanfare' were composed in 1942, the 'Fanfare' later being used in his Third Symphony. Irving Berlin wrote around 1500 songs and was America's most prolific song wri ter. He com posed and played in an unconventional manner, using primarily the black keys on a piano fitted with a lever in order to transpose! 'Let's Face the Music and Dance' has been used by Torville & Dean and most recently for television in an advertising campaign. PAITCHYN VANNIN, ISLE OF MAN Musical Director: Liz Greel1 Age range of performers: 11-17 years Kiaull ny Marrey Gemma StarkL1f! (Music of the Sea) Peter Cubber/cif. arr. Stephanie Wellings Ramsey Grammar School, in the North of the Isle of Man, is a comprehensive co-ed school of about 700 pupils. The members of the group Paitchyn Vannin (pronounced 'pet-chin', meaning children of the Isle of Man) all attend the school and rehearse in their own time, arranging traditional Manx tunes and composing new ones. They also teach each other the traditional Manx dances and invent new steps and 'sets' (dance sequences). 'Kiaull ny Marrey' (pronounced 'coal-ne-marry') was put together especially for the National Festival of Music for Youth to show as many of the different types of Manx music and dance as possible in a short time. It evokes a picture of the beautiful Isle of Man and its people. Beginning with an unaccompanied solo singer and a very sad song in Manx Gaelic, it is enriched by a harp and penny whistle and then all the instruments enter: whistle, alto whistle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, fiddle, bodrhan (drum) and Jew's harp' The dancers wear the traditional costume for an important festive occasion and perform both slow and fast dances. STOKE BRUNSWICK SCHOOL CHOIR, EAST GRINSTEAD, SUSSEX Conductor: Sue Barber Accompanist: Sue Harvey Age range of performers: 8-13 years Dodi Li Traditional Israeli, arr. In addition to regular choir practices, the thirty-two choristers attend musicianship lessons based on KodaJy principles with their director,
Sue Barber, who is a graduate of the British Kodaly Academy, In January, the choir was featured on BBC 2 Television in the Sainsbury Choir of the Year, and in May the choir performed in Hyde Park for the V.E. Day Celebrations. Recently it took part in Britten's 'Owen Wingrave' with Glyndebourne Touring Opera. Tonight's programme consists of arrangements of traditional songs from four different countries. The African song, 'Nkosi Sikele', has been adopted as the National Anthem of South Africa. The first soloist in the 'Eriskay Love Lilt', Matthew Long, has recently returned from a month in Italy where he played the part of Miles in Britten's 'Turn of the Screw' for Turin's Teatro Regio. POVEY TRIO, LONDON Musical Director: Sophie Till Age range of performers: 10-13 years Navarra Pablo de Sarasate Peter and Elizabeth Povey are brother and sister and have been playing together for many years. They were recipients of the Outstanding Pertormance Award in the Junior Chamber Music category of the National Festival of Music for Youth and this is their fourth visit to the Royal Albert Hall, having made appearances in 1993, twice in 1994 and in the 1995 Schools Proms. Music plays an important part in the life of the school; its Brass Band, Choir and smaller ensembles regularly perform at the National Festival of Music for Youth. This year the school orchestra, which was formed in 1981, won the Outstanding Performance Award for the third year in succession. 'Dance Suite in 0' was commissioned by Glasgow Education Committee for the Glasgow Schools' Orchestra, and its first performance was on 10 July 1968. The first movement, 'Dithyramb', is a choral hymn which exhibits a degree of influence from the music of ancient Greece in that it is passionate and exciting. The second movement is noted for its flute and oboe duets. The third movement has a wonderful jig where half the orchestra play in 6/8 and the other half in 4/4.
PANTASTICS STEEL BAND, DERBY Musical Director: Anne John5 Age range of performers: 13-18 years Sabre Dance from Gayaneh Khac/zaturial1, arr. Chris Jol1l15 Blue Moon Rodger5 & Hart, arr. The best players from this group form 'The Pantastics', who are booked professionally countrywide. They are taught and trained by Anne Johns who, along With other band members, also arranges their music. They have played for six members of the Royal Family, including The Queen, and have received commissions from the High Sheriff of Derbyshire, Derby Cathedral, the BBC and the Open University. They have toured several times in Europe, and in 1990 were the first steel band to play in the Crimea. In 1994 they were a guest band at the McDonalds' Child of Achievement Awards, and celebrated ten years with a concert trip to Canada which included playing at the opening of the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. They have featured on radio and TV in the UK, Europe, USSR and Canada, and not only are they notoriously self-supporting but have also managed to raise thousands of pounds for charity. Tonight's programme has been selected to show the wide range of style, mood, dynamic and timbre of which the steel band is capable, and for which the Pantastics have made themselves a name. BRIGHTON YOUTH ORCHESTRA STRING ENSEMBLE Musical Director: Al1drcw Sherwood Age range of performers: 13-19 years Old Polish Suite Al1drzej Pal1uftlik Symphonic Suite Tsvetal1 T5velal1ov The Brighton Youth Orchestra is one of the oldest independent youth orchestras in Europe and made an appearance at the first ever Schools Prom Concert at the Royal Albert Hall. The orchestra has been chosen to represent Britain twice, in both Montreux and Aberdeen Youth Festivals. The BYO String Ensemble is just one of the orchestra's many associated groups and was formed in 1993. The players themselves take much of the responsibility for the day-to-day running. Sir Andrzej Panufnik (1914-1992) wrote the Old Polish Suite in 1949 during the Stalinist regime when he was expected to write music celebrating 'eternal ... Polish-Soviet friendship'. He avoided this by (in his own words) 'working as a restorer of 16th & 17th Century Polish Music' and to 'escape suffocation from political pressure'. Tsvetanov's 'Symphonic Suite' score, written in 1923, was given to the present director of the Brighton Youth Orchestra in Bulgaria some years ago. The parts were then written out by hand. The music uses typical Bulgarian folk rhythms.

They are very well known in East Anglia and have appeared on 'What's That Noise?', 'For the Love of It' and 'Why Don't You?' The music and words to 'Bluesong' were written by Susanna Mann (aged 10 at the time) and arranged by GiI\ Alexander. Leo Alterelli sings 'Jeepers Creepers', also arranged by GiI\ Alexander, which is in 'Satchmo' style, and makes use of his talent for skat singing too~ HERTFORDSHIRE COUNTY YOUTH ORCHESTRA Conductor: Peter Stask Age range of performers: 14-21 years The Pines of Rome: OttorillO Respiglii The Pines of the Janiculum The Pines of the Appian Way Edward Elgar Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1 'Land of Hope and Glory' Hertfordshire County Youth Orchestra has been at the forefront of music making in this country since its inception thirty years ago. For many years it was conducted by Leonard Hirsch, but it has also been directed by Sir Charles Groves, Meredith Davies and Christopher Adey. It has performed extenSively in this country and on tour in Austria, Poland and, most recently, the Czech Republic. Peter Stask, its current conductor, has directed the orchestra in memorable performances of Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique and Mahler's Symphony No. 1. Born in 1879, Respighi studied with Rimsky-Korsakov in Russia before returning to Italy where he wrote 'The Pines of Rome' in 1923-4. A brief piano cadenza and solo clarinet introduce the third movement, where the pines are seen in moonlight in the Janiculum (Temple of Janus, God of doors, gates and the New Yearl). Respighi was unconventional enough to introduce a recording of a nightingale during the nocturnal episode, having discarded the idea of using a conventional instrument. Dawn appropriately follows on the Appian Way and past Italian glories are relived through kaleidoscopic reminders of the Consul's marching armies, stirring brass and a thrilling advance on the sunny Sacred Way, tOll'ards the Capitol. The Pomp and Circumstance Marches form a series of five military marches for orchestra, four of which date from between 1901 and 1907 and the last from 1930. The celebrated patriotic words of A C Benson were added to the first march in 0 major for a Gala performance to commemorate the Coronation of King Edward VII.
