Music for Youth has a distinguished record of focusing public attention on the vital issue of music education in this country. The Schools Proms are at the heart of this - congratulations on twenty-five years of wonderful music making. Sir Simon Rattle CBE

e are here tonight to celebrate twenty-five years of Schools

Proms. Since 1975 we have been privileged to bring to this wonderful concert hall the fruits of music education in the United Kingdom. From inner-city steel bands to the finest youth orchestras the roll of honour has covered every corner of the country and every form of music. When we originally planned these concerts we little thought that they were to become the world-acclaimed focus for Britain's young music makers that they are today. There are far too many people to thank here but I would like to mention the invaluable contributions made at the outset by the Music Industries Association, Geoffry Russell-Smith (whose popular work "The Wedding Ring" we shall hear on Wednesday evening), Antony Hopkins, Derek Jewell, the Times Educational Supplement and Commercial Union (now CGU). Without them, our funders and the music teachers who foster and develop the potential of our young musicians, these wonderful concerts would not have been possible.

Looking back over the twenty-five years of the Schools Proms' existence, one can only be amazed at the standards of performance and the sheer variety of music making they exemplify. No other country in the world has been able to produce such an extraordinary showcase to demonstrate the achievements of young musicians. Admittedly there have been times when school music has been perilously under threat; but surely the powers that be now realise that we have built something that is a true marvel of the age. Presenter, lives in Surrey (where he was born) and has five children. He writes musicals, runs The Orpheus Trust, builds houses, plays cricket and sails his boat. He was brought up in Liverpool, and progressed from St Agnes' Church Choir through the Cavern Club to the Cambridge Footlights. Several spells singing his songs in London nightclubs led to appearances on the Today programme in the '60S and thence to BBC1'S Nationwide and That's Life, as well as several series of his own. Andrew L1oyd-Webber then invited him to write lyrics.

he Berkshire Young Musicians Trust delivers instrumental and vocal lessons to schools across Berkshire and is supported by all the new Unitary Authorities. Gillian Dibden, Head of Voice and Choral Music for the Trust, invited primary schools to come together for tonight's performance. The response was overwhelming and the group numbers 550 young singers who have enjoyed themselves tremendously putting together this excerpt from The Ragged Child. Accompanied by an ensemble of senior instrumental students from the Trust, they met last weekend to bring everything together. Their stage director, Clare Young, lives in Italy but her affection for this piece and the challenge of giving 550 children the opportunity to perform in the Royal Albert Hall was eno~gh to bring her back. The Ragged Child was first performed by Tiffin School, Kingston-upon-Thames in March 1986 and then subsequently by the National Youth Music Theatre at various festivals including the Edinburgh International Festival in August 1986. Clare Young and Gillian Dibden directed a very successful performance of the work with the Berkshire Junior Opera Group a few years ago at the Wilde Theatre. The plot of The Ragged Child deals with the poverty of children in London in the nineteenth-century and Lord Shaftesbury's efforts in Parliament to bring relief. Tonight's extract begins with the whole of London celebrating the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park in 1851.

andau Forte College is a City Technology College for eleven to eighteen-year-olds in the centre of Derby.

The staff of the college believe that the arts play a vital role in the education of young people and this is reflected both in the curriculum and the extra-curricular activities available to students. The youth theatre group devises original music drama which tackles issues that are important to young people. The group was formed in 1995 and has since been awarded three Outstanding Performance Awards at the National Festival of Music for Youth. Night Train was commissioned by The Prince's Trust to celebrate the opening of a youth centre in lronville. The youth centre is actually a railway carriage artistically decorated with graffiti. The full show lasts for over an hour and tells the story ofTrevor, a young man with some problems. In this excerpt the crew of the night train help Trevor find himself by introducing him to music. They give him a special gift and through music, Trevor's life changes for ever.

Cknield High School, a mixed comprehensive school for eleven to sixteen-year-olds, has a very strong musical tradition. There are many groups which play in school and the local community, including a wind band, an orchestra, two choirs and a kabuki ensemble. The signing choir was formed about five years ago in order to help integrate pupils from Icknield's HearingImpaired Unit into the musical life of the school. Membership of both the choir and signing choir involves no audition and is open to anyone who is interested and currently there are about fifty members.

The visual element of the signing choir is an important factor in choosing music for any performance. Repertoire must feature music which can be enhanced by the inclusion of signing for the deaf. Tonight, the Choir will begin their programme with a cheerful rendition of the ABBA song Thank You for the Music. The message sums up the feelings of

he Greater Gwent Youth Brass Band was formed as the Monmouthshire Youth Brass Band in the late 1950S and is now run by the Greater Gwent Music Support Service with the support of the Newport, Torfaen, Monmouthshire and Blaenau Gwent councils. In 1991 the band won the gold award at the Gower Music Festival in Valkenburg, Holland, and in 1992 received an Outstanding Performance Award at the National Festival of Music for Youth, an achievement that was repeated this year under their current conductor Adrian Morton. The band won the National Youth Brass Band title in 1994 and in 1999, and also won the European Youth Brass Band Championships in 1998. 1992 saw the band's last performance at the Schools Prom and the performers are delighted to be playing at the Albert Hall again this year. Stephen Roberts' arrangement of Gaudete opens this programme with vitality in his version of the fourteenth-century traditional song. I Will Follow Him is an arrangement from the film score of Sister Act and features the trombone section of the band. To conclude the programme the band will play the rousing finale from Respighi's Pines of Rome.

n the past, various adjudicators have likened hand-bell playing to patting your head whilst rubbing your stomach and with a difficulty level exceeded only by madrigals sung underwater! Players need an awareness of the music as a whole, not simply a knowledge of their own notes. This group has certainly forged great team spirit in the year they have been together and performing at the Royal Albert Hall is the high point for them all. The words of Psalm 47 have been especially set for this particular group and singing whilst playing certainly presents a challenge for them. Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary was originally composed for trumpet and organ and so this arrangement for handbells provides a stunning contrast. Lullaby of Broadway is originally taken from the film 42nd Street and the later stageshow of the same name. The song was also later used in the films Lullaby of Broadway and Gold Diggers of 1937.

his is the first year that the Dulwich College Chamber Orchestra has participated in the Music for Youth Festival series and it is an honour to have been awarded an Outstanding Performance Award at the Royal Festival Hall. This Chamber Orchestra is one of many musical ensembles at Dulwich College and comprises some of the most talented string players at the school rehearsing every week for an hour and a half. In addition, most of the boys play in various chamber music groups, orchestras and ensembles at the school. Many of the boys are music scholars and exhibitioners and several are also members of the National Youth Orchestra. Tchaikovsky wrote his Serenade for Strings

in March 1880, at the age of forty while he was living in St Petersburg. It came only a few years after his marriage and subsequent emotional and psychological crisis. This caused him to move in and out of depression as well as suffering from a string of debilitating illnesses. The music reflects his inner turmoil at the time and has a compelling quality traversing the depths of emotions from profound anguish to ecstatic joy. Written in Tchaikovsky's equivalent of an eighteenth-century divertimento, the work is in four movements of which the orchestra are playing the third, Elegie.

azz Vehicle was established in 1987 by John Crouch and is now based at North esteven School where rehearsal space is provided in the school's specialist music block. The band has enjoyed wonderful involvement and recent success with Music for Youth, performing six times at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in the National Youth Jazz Festival. In 1997 the band was awarded an Outstanding Performance Award and a Guildhall Summer School Scholarship, and later that year received an invitation to appear at the Schools Prom. 1998 was dedicated to recording the band's first CD The L.I.P.A. Session. Earlier this year the band was awarded a Highly Commended Performance Award and is thrilled to have been invited to perform at the Schools Prom. lames Irving and Deborah Moon both received scholarships to the Guildhall Summer School at this year's National Festival of Music for Youth. Vivacious drumming by lames Irving will be featured in the fabulous, hard-hitting rock number Omaha which begins jazz Vehicle's performance. Soloists Rebecca Fewster and Laura Hardman will dominate the middle section with their flute solos. A favourite from the jazz repertoire is Chattanooga Choo Choo which jazz Vehicle have chosen to perform following the terrific response to their performance of this number in the foyer of the Royal Festival Hall in JUly. frican Vibes is a group of twelve .1"'1.musicians formed in September 1998. It recently featured in Cranford's European Music Tour, which involved forty students from the school leading workshops in world music with partner schools in Hungary, Italy, Germany and Austria in March 1999. The group has performed many times both in the local community and further afield and its work involves workshops as well as concert performances. They have recently performed at the Paul Robeson Theatre and as invited guests at the Wind rush Achievement Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel in london. World music is a particular feature of musical life both in the classroom and out of school. Extra-curricular ensembles include Indonesian gamelan,lndian Classical music and dance, Bhangra, Caribbean music and African dance and drumming. The Kingston Connection fuses West African rhythms with an underlying reggae feel. The music was created using a workshop approach in rehearsal, experimenting with various ideas and building the final piece gradually.

he Northamptonshire County Youth Concert Band is organised and supported by Northamptonshire Music Service. It combines musical education with performance of the highest standard and is firmly established as one of the country's finest youth concert bands. At full strength the band numbers seventy musicians with performers accepted on merit alone through an established procedure. Successes over the years include mUltiple top awards at both Boosey and Hawkes Wind Band Festival and the National Festival of Music for Youth. The band has also appeared several times at the Schools Prom in the past.

Nigel Hess composed this suite of three movements in 1985. Each movement depicts a location on the American East Coast: Shelter Island, The Cats kills and New York. Tonight the band will perform the first and third movements.

he Highgate School Jazz Quartet was formed at Highgate School as a trio eighteen months ago and expanded to a quartet in January of this year. Following numerous successful appearances at concerts in the school they now give performances further afield and have recently appeared at Jacksons Lane Arts Centre in Highgate where they were received with great acclaim. The members of the group are George Fogel (piano), David O'Brien (double bass), Alex Norman (drums) and Andrew Woolf (clarinet and saxophones). At the recent National Festival of Music for Youth they received awards for Outstanding Performance,

New Composition and Improvisation. Ornithology is a melody derived from classic bebop lines and based on the chord sequence of the jazz standard How High the Moon . The appropriately-named Charlie 'Bird' Parker composition has itself become a standard. The World's Second Fastest Oxen is part of a suite of ox-related pieces by the group's pianist, George Fogel, in which those oxen which were only second best take us through numerous moods, grooves and rhythmic motifs, with the result that many are superimposed and few last longer than this sentence! Both works are arranged by members of the group.

ampshire County Youth Orchestra draws its 120 members from all over Hampshire, including Portsmouth and Southampton. Last year the orchestra toured South Africa, the first British youth orchestra to visit since the end of apartheid, giving concerts in the townships and local schools as well as performing Mahler's Resurrection Symphony in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Next year Classic FM will record the orchestra's performance of Mahler's Symphony No 3 as part of the Sainsbury's Youth Orchestra Series. A tour of Chile is planned for 2001.

Shostakovich's Festival Overture is thought to have been written for the thirtieth anniversary of the Russian Revolution, but was suppressed until Stalin's death and first performed at the 1954 celebrations marking the thirty-seventh anniversary of the October Revolution. Its mood of celebration and popularity with youth orchestras make it a fitting finale to the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Music for Youth Schools Prom . Pomp and Circumstance was composed in 1901. Referring to the tune in the trio section, Elgar said to one of his Enigma friends, Dorabella, "I've got a tune that will knock 'em flat." In that same year, the

he band has just finished an amazing year. It was presented with an Outstanding Performance Award at the National Festival of Music for Youth for the third year running and also received an Improvisation Award and a Rhythm Section Award. Earlier they took the gold award in the National Concert Band Festival for the third consecutive year. Added to this they have given very successful concerts at the Picturedrome, Northampton and the Midlands premier live-music venue, the Fiddle & Bone in Birmingham.

and appeared on Calendar TV and has performed in the National Festival of Music for Youth for eight consecutive years, with two Highly Commended and one Outstanding Performance Award. Vibration is a devised piece, largely improvised, choreographed and composed by the children. The project is based on the science of how sound travels. Much of the music was improvised in class lessons during topics on Year Three Metals and Magnetism, Year Four On the Move, Year Five Hot and Cold, Year Six Solids, Gases and Liquids. The children had great fun making up the story, and their message is clear: 'DON'T LET THEM STOP THE MUSIC!'

Do Nothing 'til You Hear from Me is a wellknown swing standard. This year is the 100th anniversary of Ellington's birth and the band is pleased to play this tribute to him. Ellis Island by New York-based saxophonist and arranger Bob Mintzer is a 6/8 melody inspired by the island of the same name, representative of the melting pot of modern culture that is New York.

addock School in Wandsworth has around 100 pupils aged between four and nineteen who have severe, or profound and multiple learning difficulties. The school has a thriving music department with choirs, ensembles and instrumental lessons. The senior ensemble is a percussion group with six students and is the most experienced group in the school. The ensemble has performed its own compositions for the past three years in the Wandsworth Music Festival, at concerts in the borough and at school. Last week the ensemble completed a tour of North Yorkshire, linking up with Risedale Community College, a mainstream secondary school, and Aycliff and Branspeth Brass Band.

The ensemble received a New Composition Award at the National Festival of Music for Youth earlier this year for its composition Black and Yellow. The work, with its two contrasting movements, evokes the moods the colours portray to the performers. The students use instruments, combinations of sounds and rhythmic motifs to evoke the feelings these colours represent to them. Black is therefore dull, dark and mysterious and Yellow is bright, sharp and cheerful.

antate Youth Choir was founded in 1994 as a mixed-voice youth choir and operates an open-door policy, so no audition is required. It now has a membership of 130 boys and girls aged ten to twenty-one who represent over fifty schools, colleges and universities, mostly in Essex, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire. The choir has performed in many major London venues and, during regular tours abroad, has sung in St Mark' s, Venice and the Basilica di San Francesco, Assisi. Cantate has recorded at Abbey Road Studios, appeared in BBC Radio 4'S Christmas Pantomime and contributed to the soundtracks of the Hollywood movies Prince of Egypt and Anastasia. The lively arrangement of Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit was arranged by Ken Burton for his celebrated London Adventist Chorale. The TES Millennium Anthem There's Only One of You was composed by Debbie . Wiseman with lyrics by Don Black and draws on themes from her composition Conversation for Orchestra which was commissioned by BT for National Orchestra Week. This contrasts in mood with lames Erb's classic version of the American folksong Shenandoah, which is reflective, linear and has an incredibly poignant ending. Steve Zegree is one of the most effective arrangers of vocal jazz in the USA today. His re-working of Berlin's Blue Skies shows great inventiveness and creativity; and yet, like Best lames Erb, his of luck for version is the next twenty-five basically years and keep up the simple and good and essential work. true to the Sir Peter Maxwell-Oavies originalCBE the prerequisites of all good arrangements.

he Coombs Quartet was formed in 1996 to attend chamber music weekends given by the Derbyshire String Quartet and to participate in the National Festival of Music for Youth. In 1997 they were awarded a Highly Commended Performance Award and in 1998 and 1999 Outstanding Performance Awards and were invited to 'busk' at the Schools Prom last year. The quartet members are Rosie langley and Jemima Cockburn (violins), Katrina Brown (viola) and Benjamin Gregor-Smith ('cello). The Presto from David Stone's Second Miniature String Quartet is a lively dance in the style of a tarantella, the theme of which starts with the viola and 'cello, before being passed to the violins. It is very rhythmical with a syncopated figure which is great fun to play! In Ragtime the players are asked to stamp with the heel of the foot keeping the toes on the ground - quite difficult to do loudly enough!

millennium, Beethoven's first essay in symphonic form, which received its premiere in 1800, stands on the threshold of a new century. The young Beethoven handles the orchestra, from the opening, with a characteristic sense of purpose. In itself, the music remains a bright and confident testament to a young composer sure of his genius. Kodaly's folk-inspired Hary fanos Suite has long been established as an orchestral show-piece. The Intermezzo draws together many of those elements which themselves communicate a particularly Hungarian flavour: quirky dance-like rhythms, modal themes and Kodaly's improvisatory employment of cimbalon. Beautiful solo passages provide the texture with light and shade.

usic-making has been a vital element in the life and practice of St Malachy's College, Belfast for the past forty years. Drawing together boys from the widest spectrum of backgrounds, the orchestra, originally an ad hoc collection of six enthusiasts, today boasts some seventy committed college instrumentalists, who give willingly of their own time to rehearse challenging programmes. In recent years, the orchestra has gone beyond its North Belfast home to make appearances in the National Concert Hall, Dublin and Belfast's Ulster Hall and the internationally acclaimed Waterfront Hall. A fitting work as we look forward to a new

Currently BBC Radio 2 School Band of the Year, Smithills has performed at the Royal Festival Hall on several occasions and has previously been invited to perform at the Schools Prom in 1995 and 1997. The band has toured Norway, Holland, Scotland, France and Japan and was awarded first prize at the 1997 World Music Contest in Kerkrade, Holland. While Fanfare for the Common Man, heard atthe beginning of tonight's programme, is frequently heard in films and at major award ceremonies such as the Olympic Games, Bolero continues this sporting connection, recalling the most successful Torvill & Dean ice routine. Principal Cornet lynsey Hayes performs the beautiful solo All the Way transcribed from the Sinatra/Riddle collaboration while the first performance of Saecula Nova, composed by the conductor, brings the band's programme to a close.

he 'A' Team consists of nine eleven to thirteen-year-olds (eight pan players and one kit player) who have been playing together for two years. Introduced to the school four years ago playing the pans is open to anyone and is a very different way of learning to make music from the traditional way we usually learn in this country. There is no written music, and the children on the soprano pans pick out the melody. The guitars and 'cello enhance and develop the tune as well as combining with the bass pans to provide harmonic background. The original arrangement is provided by the Musical Director. Having memorised the melody the children listen to each other and discuss how the separate pans can develop and enhance the theme thus learning the skills of harmony and improvisation using ostinato, etc. The programme tonight is based on traditional tunes from South America which would have been handed down orally, and demonstrates the contrasts in tone and texture which can be achieved on instruments which are usually associated with volume and rhythm.

urrey County Youth Music and Performing Arts provides lessons and other musical activities for over 8,000 students around Surrey. The County Youth Orchestra, formed in 1967, is no stranger to the National Festival of Music for Youth and has played in the Schools Prom several times over the years. Together with Surrey County Youth Choir and other school choirs from Surrey they give major concerts in the Royal Albert Hall every other year. The last concert, in November 1998, featured 1,500 students, and the choir in tonight's performance includes many players and singers who.performed Vaughan Williams' Sea Symphony with soloists Amanda Buckland and Alan Opie. Carl Orffwas born in Munich on 10 July 1895. Until the composition of Carmina Burana, when he was over forty, he was primarily known as a music teacher. The premiere of the work was given by the Frankfurt Opera on 8 June 1937. It was a big hit and has continued to be extremely popular ever since. The title Carmina Burana literally means Songs ofBeuren which are poems from an early thirteenth-century German manuscript which was found in 1803 in a Bavarian Benedictine abbey.

The group is extremely popular in the High Peak having been in the 'Search for a Star' Competition in March 1999 and finalists in the Derbyshire Young Band of the Year in April. Jonathan Brumhead is the composer, arranger and keyboard player, while loran Dubaic and Andrew Dent are the vocalists who complete this lively, enthusiastic and confident trio.

Malcolm Arnold wrote his second set of English Dances in 1951. The first dance is an orchestral tour de force with especially interesting parts for side-drum and piccolo. The second movement is a jig and is followed by a tender movement with the mood of a sad folk-song. The last movement is a fitting finale, overflowing with excitement. The Pomp and Circumstance Marches form a series of five military marches for orchestra, four of which date from between 1901 and 1907 and the last from 1930. The celebrated patriotic words of A C Benson were added to the first march in D Major for a gala performance to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII.

In Each Other's Arms began life as an instrumental piece after hours of experimentation. The lyrics were added later and Jonathan insists that the words reflect hypothetical situations or friends' experiences! I Can't Wait (A Moment Longer) was similarly composed and has an excellent structure (thanks to 'A' Level harmony lessons!) with an exciting modulation at the end to add extra sparkle.

The orchestra last played in the Royal Albert Hall a year ago when they accompanied the rock legend John Otway with whom they recently recorded a CD. PROGRAMME NOTES MUSIC FOR YOUTH FANFARE

he Music for Youth Fanfare was composed specifically with the Royal Albert Hall in mind. Its special qualities, unlike any other concert hall in London, seemed to cry out for some imaginative positioning of the instrumentalists in the band. The piece is meant to be uplifting and full of joy. The music is highly unified with the two three-note cells at the very start forming the basis for all that follows. The tam-tam also acts as a unifying device heralding the opening of the piece and finally introducing the Coda . The concert organ of the Royal Albert Hall was also a source of inspiration. Since I was a child, my excitement at the Promenade Concerts was always heightened by the possibility that I might hear that magnificent instrument playing full blast! I have used the organ sparingly, making use of the extreme registers: the lowest 32 ft pedal notes, with their ability to literally shake people in their seats, to create a feeling of awe and expectation and the highest pitches to give a sense of space and light. The Fanfare certainly has Copland at its heart, not surprisingly given the brief, but by the end a certain Britishness seems to shine through! Christopher Slaski

St Keverne Youth Band opens its programme with Handel's well-known Allegro Deciso from his suite The Water Music. In contrasting style, a quartet follows, made up of four cousins who play a beautiful arrangement by Stephen Bradnum of Joyce Eilers Bacak's The Irish Blessing. To end its programme the band has chosen music attributed to Henry VIII and arranged for brass band in fine style by Stephen Roberts.

896 saw the formation of the very first

village band in St Keverne whose members were men from the local stone quarries. Many children later filled vacancies in the band but it was not until 1994 that a separate youth band was formed, then with only seventeen players. The youth band has since gone from strength to strength and now numbers some seventy players at various stages of

The children have been closely involved in the creation of this piece, offering many ideas and suggestions, working on the characterisations and extra script. There is a recorder solo by Rebecca Bell who, with others in the group, helped with the writing of the music used in the performance.

~rkside is a small, independent school

in Northampton. The performers are an entire year group and, while the school has a fine reputation for music, drama and dance, many of the children performing do not take part in any vocational activities beyond the normal classroom curriculum. Their teachers are not music specialists but are keen to give their pupils as many experiences as possible. The children have worked very hard to reach a high standard, which has resulted in being invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall.

The Train to Glasgow is based on a poem of the same name by Wilma Horsbrugh. It involves drama, music, sounds using the voice and the body, choral speaking and movement with an underlying train rhythm.

he BYCO operates as part of the Bromley Youth Music Trust, and since

its formation in the 1970S has won a number of awards at the National Festival of Music for Youth and also in the International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna. The orchestra has toured in nine European countries and Canada and is in the process of recording their fourth CD. Future events include a Queen Elizabeth Hall concert with Bromley Youth Concert Band in March next year. Chacony represents a collaboration between two of the greatest English com posers. Written by Purcell, the piece is based on a chaconne theme which is played by all the different instruments in turn, although often hidden by other melodic material. Britten's edition represents a particularly dramatic and musical interpretation of this wonderful piece. Yesterday has become one of the most well known songs of the twentieth century and this string orchestra arrangement by Nicholas Woodall is based on a recent rendition of the piece by the group, Wet, Wet, Wet.

Mike Batt's poignant Bright Eyes, famous for its association with the film Watership Down, is presented in an arrangement by Islwyn Evans. he Jazz Quartet is from Norton Knatchbull School, Ashford, Kent and has been together for about three years_ Jazz groups from the school have appeared at many National Festivals of Music for Youth and at seven previous Schools Proms. This group was awarded an Outstanding Performance Award at this year's festival, all four players received improvisation awards and Nick Peck also received a New Composition Award - all this in the group's first National Festival. The quartet have a full diary and have appeared at the South Bank on several occasions, at Kensington Olympia, The Brighton Centre, on Carlton TV and at many other events. They have now left the school and three are pursuing their musical education further. Members of the Jazz Quartet are David Holland (saxophones), Nick Peck (piano), Mark Adair (bass) and Mark Salisbury (drums). Bananas, Bananas, Bananas was written for this evening's performance by the talented pianist/composer of the group Nick Peck and has its roots in Afro-Cuban and Latin styles. The Jazz Quartet will link this into the captivatingly beautiful ballad Blue in Green and will then lead into

another of Nick's pieces, 500 Days Until Tomorrow, a scorching swing number. All the players will feature as soloists. .

he BYMT Berkshire Youth Orchestra is the senior orchestra of Berkshire Young Musicians Trust. It draws its members from across the county of Berkshire. The orchestra rehearses on intensive short courses during the holiday periods and gives regular concerts in the county. This is the second time the orchestra has appeared at the Schools Prom. Plans for the coming year include the first orchestral concert in the newly renovated Reading Town Hall, a performance ofVerdi's Requiem with Reading Festival Chorus and a tour of Italy with visits to Florence and Rome. Gershwin spent the summer of 1925 writing this concerto, originally entitled The New York Concerto and was the soloist at the first performance, given in Carnegie Hall. Written in the form of a classical concerto, the work had an overall plan of Rhythm, Blues and more Rhythm. In Gershwin's words. the opening movement 'employs the Charleston rhythm. It is quick and pulsating, representing the young enthusiastic spirit of American life'. Opening with sledgehammer blows on the timpani, the movement moves through sinuous Charleston rhythms, quiet and indeterminate blues, breathless piano cadenzas and grandiose tuttis.

he Garforth Community College Gospel Choir draws its members from one of the largest comprehensive schools in the north of England. They have been together for two years and perform at many charity concerts in the local area. Any student from the college is free to join without audition. Written music is not used but harmonies are improvised and then consolidated. At present the choir comprises 130 pupils, and the signing and choreography are undertaken by the students themselves. Felicity Hayward, a soloist in the choir, composed the first of the three songs being performed.

he Kirklees Senior Percussion Ensemble is made up of students aged fourteen to eighteen. In tonight's performance they are featuring trumpet and saxophone soloists whilst using the percussion ensemble almost like a jazz combo. The group played at the National Festival of Music for Youth earlier this year and was delighted to be awarded an Outstanding Performance Award. Latin 7 is an improvisation on two riffs written by Matthew Delaney. It is a culmination of work done on odd time signatures and Latin American rhythms. The piece is aleatoric in everything but the overall shape and structure and therefore the melodic content is largely improvised.

orthamptonshire Massed Choir, Orchestra and Dancers was formed especially for tonight's Schools Prom and the performers involved are all taken from Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Service and include the County Youth Orchestra, singers from Brackley, Daventry, Duston, Favell, Ferrers, Kettering, Kingscliffe, Nene Valley, Northampton, Roade, Towcester, Trinity, Wellingborough and Guilsborough Music Centres and dancers and actors from Brackley, Kettering and Wellingborough.

The role of the Service is to support local schools and the community of Northamptonshire with facilities and expertise for the development of the perform ing arts. To meet this challenge some fourteen Music and Performing Arts Centres meet on a weekly basis offering a full spectrum of musical, dance and dramatic opportunities. This evening's performers represent a selection of the 3,000 studen ts that regularly attend those centres. Premiered in 1995 at the Royal Albert Hall, Chris Hazell's cantata The Journey was inspired by a drive on the M40 motorway and what can be seen along the way. Brilliantly written and arranged for young voices the words remind us, in a lighthearted way, of the damage and pollution that we cause - a message for us all!

urnfurlong Jazz burst into life at Turnfurlong Middle School in 1992 and has since earned itself a remarkable reputation having played at many prestigious venues, including the Royal Northern College of Music, London's Dominion Theatre, Hilton Hotel Park Lane, Birmingham's Symphony Hall and the National Exhibition Centre. The band has played twice at the Child of Achievement Awards before the Prime Minister and many TV celebrities, and has appeared on Anglia TV and on BBC TV's Blue Peter. One in four children learn a musical instrument at Turnfurlong Middle School where there is also an orchestra, choir, recorder consort and other groups which are led by the school's Director of Music, Sue Hird. Instrumental music specialists from Aylesbury Music Centre work in school to support these activities. TJB's programme 'takes-off' with a short burst of Mission: Impossible, the theme tune from the famous television programme and film of the same name. The exciting melody sits on a two-bar rhythmic riff played by the bass guitar and trombone. Along with Take Five and Mars from The Planets, Mission: Impossible must rank as one of the world's most famous tunes with five beats to the bar. ggleScliffe School is an 11-18 comprehensive with 1,200 pupils. In February of this year it gained 'Arts College Status' specialising in music, drama and dance. In addition to presenting concerts locally, the school's brass band, chamber

orchestra, choirs, orchestra and chamber ensembles have collectively made thirtyfive appearances at the Royal Festival Hall as part of the National Festival of Music for Youth. The school also hosts the North East Regional Festival on behalf of Music for Youth. This year the orchestra was awarded an Outstanding Performance Award for the sixth time since 1993. Johann Strauss's Radetsky March is often played on the Last Night of the Promenade Concerts. The audience always joins in by clapping the beat - in time!! - of the main march tune. It is named after a famous Austrian soldier called General Radetsky who commanded the army at a time when Austria was at war with Italy. The 1812 Overture was written for the commemoration of the seventieth anniversary of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow. It is famous for its dramatic ending using (real!) cannon shots, heavy brass and percussion. The Pomp and Circumstance Marches are a series of five military marches in symphonic form. The first march is now best known because of its link with the words Land of Hope and Glory. This link came about when
