Music resonates with all of us, it plays a powerful and evocative role in our lives – it punctuates our memories and changes our mood. It transports us to other worlds.

of emotions in a safe and creative place. We can enjoy a strong sense of community through our shared endeavours and a powerful sense of achievement on nights like tonight.

Equally the memories from tonight’s concert will stay with us all for ever. The young people, friends and relatives will look back on their performances with pride and warmth. They are performing on a world-class stage and I hope that tonight’s experience will inspire them to continue with their music making for many years to come.

Incredibly, Music for Youth has supported more than two million young people since it was established and we have big ambitions for the future. Our 50th birthday celebrations in 2020 will kick off with our first concert at the Barbican in March, featuring exciting new collaborations and entirely original music.

For nearly 50 years Music for Youth has been creating such life-changing experiences for young people from all over the UK. We believe that active music making should be available to everyone – regardless of their postcode, social circumstances or ability to pay. That’s because the impact of playing an instrument or singing goes way beyond the rehearsal or performance itself.

Back to this evening, and tonight we’re going to hear a spectacular showcase of the best and brightest young musicians from across the country. Their heart-warming performances will leave you inspired by our young people. They are the future.

In an ‘always on’ digital world, having the chance to escape and ‘switch off’, while doing something creative that you love, has tremendous value. In music, we can explore a wide range

Judith Webster Chief Executive, Music for Youth

MASSED ENSEMBLES AT THE MFY PROMS

MASSED ENSEMBLE

WHAT IS A MASSED ENSEMBLE? Massed Ensembles are one of the cornerstones of the Music for Youth Proms and involve around 1,000 young performers. At each evening of the Proms a different Massed Ensemble represents a different region of the country. After months of creative development and rehearsals, hundreds of young people come together to perform in a once-in-a-lifetime, large scale performance on the world-famous Royal Albert Hall stage.

NEWHAM MASSED ENSEMBLE

WHAT DO WE SUPPORT? • Innovation • Collaboration • Good practice in teaching and learning • Opportunities for’ young people to take part in something beyond their normal experience, meet other young musicians and work with new artists • Audience development – active involvement in securing support for young people

2019 MASSED ENSEMBLES We are delighted to introduce the regional massed ensemble performance projects that will be presented at this year’s Music for Youth Proms.

TUESDAY 12 NOVEMBER

Newham’s Community Opera – Full Circle

The Young People of Newham with John Barber and Hazel Gould* arr. John Barber and James Brady

The two partnerships whose projects were selected are: • Newham Music & Lister Community School • Norfolk Music Hub & Norwich Theatre Royal

London Borough of Newham Age: 8–19 Musical Director: Amy Haynes Project Lead: Nicola Williams Lead Organisation: Newham Music Partner Organisation: Lister Community School Newham Music is the award-winning Hub for the London Borough of Newham, committed to inspiring lives through music, unifying and motivating children and young people across the borough. Newham Music is a regional leader in music education, providing tuition, projects and performances to over 15,000 young people annually. Lister Community School is a specialist school in Music and Science. A mixed comprehensive secondary school, Lister welcomes both students and staff from a diverse multicultural background. Music has been put at the centre of school life at Lister and has given fantastic opportunities for all students to broaden their experiences. Full Circle is Newham’s Community Opera, written by the young people of Newham. Inspired by belonging, togetherness and second-chances, 300 young people from Newham schools came together to tell their story, through their music and their words. This opera has given our young people the opportunity to share their challenges, hopes and ambitions.

Full Circle is a celebration of the rich cultural diversity of our community, showcasing the wealth of talent and creativity in our young people.

The young people involved in this project are showing that there is a wealth of talent and creativity in Newham that should be celebrated.

Full Circle was awarded Outstanding Musical Initiative at the Music Teachers Awards for Excellence 2019.

Inspired by stories of togetherness, place-making, second chances, including refugee experiences. Students have rejected outside pressures and embraced each other, empathising with their neighbours and recognising the basic similarities amongst themselves, which really speaks to the nature of the project and provides hope and inspiration to those of us who have witnessed it. By bringing so many talented young people and schools together, Full Circle has raised the musical standards for all.

One of the most impressive and inspiring changes to come out of this project has been the relationships that the young people have built with each other. The community opera brings young people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, through music written by them – their words, their music. By creating and performing this musical story together students from many different cultures and backgrounds have connected on a personal level that has brought out the best in them. Built partnerships and friendships in schools and ensembles throughout an area that regularly sees vulnerable young people from disenfranchised communities and ‘borough line’ disputes ending in violence.

NORFOLK MUSIC HUB AND NORWICH THEATRE ROYAL A Kind of Magic Flute

The world is waiting

where will you take your ensemble?

Jonathan Preiss arr. Jonny Gee

Prague, Paris, Barcelona, Lake Garda and many more.

Norfolk Group Leader: Emma Rowitt Conductor: David Stowell Choir Directors: Tom Appleton and Ellie Alderton (The Come and Sing Company) Stage Director: David Stevenson Designer: Emma Wee Norfolk Music Hub, in partnership with the Come and Sing Company and the Norwich Theatre Royal present A Kind of Magic Flute; an eclectic fusion of Mozart’s original and salsa. Having taken a selection of Mozart’s famous opera’s ‘greatest hits’ and intertwined them with the rhythms and instruments of Brazil, we invite you to join us in this unique and thrilling performance. Our performance involves pupils from schools across Norfolk, and has exposed those who would not usually have access to such experiences to the chance to perform on stage at not only Norwich Theatre Royal, but now the Royal Albert Hall! The section entitled ‘Challenges’ has been Composed and Orchestrated by Evie Hinchliffe, Emily Crook, Christopher Brooke and Stanley Butcher, with additional themes by Matthew Dockray, Scarlet Bishop and Thomas Luccini.

This is a piece based on Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’ and was commissioned by the Norfolk Music Hub and Norwich Theatre Royal for the Norfolk Opera Project. The original work ran for an hour and the version being performed at the Royal Albert Hall has been prepared specially for Music for Youth 2019 . Performing an Opera is a new experience for the musicians in Norfolk and they have thoroughly enjoyed it. It has also encouraged many of the performers to investigate further, not only the original Magic Flute but many other operas too. To be able to perform it in the Albert Hall is a great thrill for everyone.

Whatever your budget, whatever your aspirations, let Club Europe create the concert tour your young musicians deserve.

The aim was to allow as many pupils from across Norfolk as possible to experience performing in the Royal Albert Hall, an opportunity these pupils would not be able to access otherwise. This has been a once in a lifetime experience for a number of wonderful pupils from Norfolk. Norfolk Music Hub & Norwich Theatre Royal would like to thank all involved in the project, and give special thanks to Norfolk County Council and parents, without whom this would not have been possible.

THE WANDERING WINDS

The Wandering Winds is an instrumental brass funk quartet that formed three years ago as a group of school friends from South-West Cornwall. They started out busking Christmas carols in the local town and this inspired them to become a fully fledged busking act that now fuses various styles and adaptations of popular music. They now bring high-energy brass funk to streets around Cornwall, as well as various local music festivals. They hope to share and inspire in others their love for instrumental music making, with intense, uplifting, high energy performances. Romano Bezzi-Coddetta*, James Garland, Thomas Lawson, Micho Tao

Since then, ‘Riverdance’ has gone on to become an international phenomenon as a two hour stage show of Irish traditional dance and music. OLDHAM MUSIC CENTRE YOUTH ORCHESTRA

The Oldham Youth Orchestra comprises of around fifty young musicians and is the senior orchestra out of three that rehearse weekly at the Oldham Music Centre. Rehearsals include sectionals and the main component sections of the orchestra – woodwind, brass and strings – all exist as separate ensembles with their own, unique concert schedule.

The orchestra, under Director of Music Gerard Booth, likes to tackle a wide variety of styles. Naturally, there is a significant focus on the traditional orchestral repertoire, but they like to mix this up with more contemporary popular music that incorporates an even wider variety of instrumentation. Their recent MFY Connects Award, which took place at The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, gave them a real opportunity to explore the ‘session orchestra’ style and there they worked upon a number of bespoke arrangements that featured the use of a full rhythm section and a woodwind section expanded to include a full set of saxophones. The orchestra itself is a regular participant in Music for Youth events. It has also toured extensively, with previous trips taking in such destinations as New York (twice), Italy, Germany, Belgium and the Czech Republic amongst others. The group will be revisiting Belgium in the near future, accompanied by the Oldham Music Centre’s Youth Brass Band and Wind Band.
