One of my favorite things to do in my spare time is simply explore and since living in San Luis Obispo for the last three years, I’ve never run out of options. The eateries and shops are what give this town such a vibrant feel. From family owned restaurants to businesses that started originally as Cal Poly senior projects, San Luis Obispo’s establishments are full of rich history and welcoming energy. It would be impossible for me to choose the top places based on the sheer number of amazing locations alone, so that is why we’ve asked you, the community, to help.

Within these pages, are the top-ranked businesses, eateries and hotspots our community voted for. We’ve included categories from the best place to take that special someone out on a date to the best spot near San Luis Obispo to take off on your surfboard and catch a killer wave. I hope this edition of Poly Picks can serve as inspiration to discover a new place you’ve never been before. Congratulations to the Poly Picks 2023 winners. And happy exploring!

BEST BREAKFAST

Sally Loo’s Wholesome Cafe

If the name wasn’t enough to indicate its warm atmosphere, Sally Loo’s Wholesome Cafe’s rustic, small-town vibe creates a welcoming invitation to locals, college students and visitors alike. Owned by San Luis Obispo locals, the breakfast spot sits right next to the train station located in the historic railroad district. Inside, the walls are decorated with local art and illuminated by the light coming from the big, front-facing windows.

On weekends, silence is rare; the humming from the coffee machines and the soft folk music from the speakers isn’t enough to drown out the eager

customers in line and outside by the coffee window. If you’re wanting a seat at Sally Loo’s table, especially on a weekend, plan to arrive early to beat the crowd.

Ingredients are sourced from local farmers and artisans, a practice intended to support the surrounding community. The menu features a range of seasonal specials, breakfast plates, burritos, baked goods, sandwiches, salads and an extensive drinks menu.

Sally Loo’s has a little something for everybody, whether it be the Loco-Moco burrito, Sally’s waffle or the quinoa and arugula salad. Pair your meal with one of

its house-blended teas, an iced matcha latte or a locally-brewed beer. Breakfast or brunch can be enjoyed sitting in the cozy indoor dining area or outside on bistro-style tables.

Open daily from 8 a.m. to 2p.m., its friendly energy and farm-fresh menu make Sally Loo’s Wholesome Cafe the top choice for breakfast in San Luis Obispo.

BEST COFFEE SHOP

Kreuzberg Coffee

Located on Higuera and in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo is Kreuzberg California, offering coffee and more. Its namesake comes from the Kreuzberg neighborhood of Berlin. The coffeehouse is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., inviting you back for lunch and cocktails after your morning beverage.

On Wednesdays, Kreuzberg hosts an open mic night for local artists and singers to perform, as well as weekly Trivia Nights on Thursdays.

Operating as one of the larger coffee houses in San Luis Obispo, Kreuzberg always has ample seating. Dozens of tables in the main room surround the

barista counter and extend into the backroom, which has an upstairs nook.

An homage to a famous Berlin street mural adorns the front left wall. Surrounding it are framed photos of famous authors. Kreuzberg also allows people to rent out their two front nooks to work out of.

It’s easy to spend the entire day in Kreuzberg, especially while enjoying an iced chai latte with their famous breakfast burrito.

Widely known for its fresh ingredients and laid-back atmosphere, the venue is a must-visit for anyone looking to grab a bite to eat in San Luis Obispo.

High Street Deli has two locations: one in Los Osos and the other, nearest to Cal Poly’s campus, on High Street. Originally created based on the street name, the High Street store is their primary location.

BEST BURGER

Finney’s Crafthouse

Located on Monterey Street in downtown San Luis Obispo is Finney’s Crafthouse. This eatery has a menu full of delicious food and drinks, most notably its burgers. With eight burger options to choose from, you can’t go wrong.

Two of its most popular burgers are the jalapeño egg burger and the bison burger. The jalapeño egg burger comes with a juicy patty topped with cheddar cheese, bacon and a fried egg. Crispy jalapeños and a chipotle aioli add a little kick and truly make this burger complete. The bison burger meat comes from Flocchini Family Ranch in

Wyoming; The Wyoming patty comes with smoked gouda, bacon jam, cherry peppers and mustard aioli.

A new addition to the mix is the Double Stack Smashburger that comes on a potato bun. Customers also have the choice to substitute any patty with a bison patty, Impossible patty or veggie patty.

Any burger can be accompanied with tater tots, Idaho fries, truffle fries or sweet fries. Along with its juicy burgers, the restaurant has a long list of craft beers on tap as well as wine and cocktails. If possible, visitors should stop by for Happy Hour between 3 p.m.

Flour House

At Flour House, it’s the wood that makes it good. The local pizza bar and pastaria create authentic Italian pizzas by hand and by “amore,” which is Italian for “love.” Owned by San Luis Obispo local and ItalianAmerican couple Gessica Russo and Alberto Russo, Flour House specializes in “Pizza Napoletana,” “a heritage style so precious that it’s guarded by Italian law,” according to their website, flourhouseslo.com. The pizza dough, which is made of high-quality Italian flour, is the heart of Pizza Napoletana, cooked in the only imported Stefano Ferrara wood-burning oven handmade in Naples on the Central Coast.

Flour House’s mission is for its pizzas to be simple, healthy and flavorful. With DOP, which stands for “Denominazione di Origine Protetta,” — or Protected Designation of Origin — the ingredients in their dishes are certified to be locally grown in Italy and packaged with

artisanal traditional methods.

“Our style and the ingredients that we use definitely set us apart. It is like eating a pizza in Naples, Italy,” Gessica Russo said. “We try to keep it as authentic as possible; that’s our style of pizza. That’s our culture, so that’s how we keep it.”

Flour House stands out with their “Meter Mondays,” where guests can order either a half-meter pizza with various tastings that serve up to four people, or a one-meter pizza that serves up to eight people. Meter Mondays at Flour House provide a place for a special occasion or an outing with friends and family.

Voted Best Pizza in Poly Picks for three years, Flour House is here to give the San Luis Obispo community a taste of the original pizza that had been crafted in Italy for over a century. Flour House was ranked number 19 in a line-up of 50

Top Pizzerias in the U.S. by food critics in “Fine Dining Lovers,” where it was one of the only restaurants in a small town to be featured. In May, the restaurant celebrates their seventh anniversary, so come see for yourself to experience its renowned wood-fired pizza.

Ziggy’s

At Ziggy’s, a giant pink pig flying over palm leaves with little angel wings presents itself on the wall as you enter the building, but the magic doesn’t end there. Their quirky flying pig brand only paints half the picture of the dazzling artistic restaurant– one with music to stream and food to share. Open since February 2020, Ziggy’s is rated the best completely plant-based restaurant in San Luis Obispo.

From black bean taquitos to Dole Whip Pineapple soft serves, Ziggy’s caters not just to those following a plant-based diet, but also to those who want to treat themselves to good food. Part of their vision says that although many people have no intention of going vegan, they “just wanted to make GOOD FOOD… that happens to be less impactful on the environment.”

Ziggy’s is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Customers can order in person, over the phone, online and through delivery services such as DoorDash. With limited vegan dining options in the area, Ziggy’s is at the forefront of producing vegan food intended to welcome everyone in the community; not just those with dietary restrictions.

Many of Ziggy’s menu items recreate wellknown fast food treats that are generally unavailable to vegans or not as decadent with nonvegan products. Ziggy’s most popular dishes include the “Crunchwrap Supreme,” inspired by Taco Bell’s popular craving as well as the “Dirty Fries,” compared to In-N-Out’s animal style fries. They make strides in inclusive dining by recreating these treats for everyone to enjoy!

Ziggy’s strives for their food to make you feel something contributing to their artistic vibe and music. According to their website, Ziggy’s plays a variety of artists ranging from “Wu-Tang, sometimes The Clash, sometimes Marvin Gaye. Sometimes Madonna and sometimes Doja Cat,” according to their site, eatziggys.com.

Ziggy’s strives to provide a positive and inclusive environment according to their mission statement and they are, “honored to be able to bring you food for the journey.”

Cal Poly’s “Learn-by-Doing” spirit is embodied within Giuseppe’s Cucina Rustica. In 1988, student Giuseppe DiFronzo established the original location in Pismo Beach as his senior project, soon opening a second location in downtown San Luis Obispo. Integrating home-grown produce like tomatoes and grapes from their 12-acre Edna Valley farm into their dishes is just one of the ways a farm-to-fork mentality is modeled in their kitchen. Seasonal dishes rotate often and are based on specialties from certain regions of Italy. Giuseppe’s also boasts a lengthy wine menu, primarily consisting of Italian and Californian blends with a number of wines locally sourced from Paso Robles and Giuseppe’s DiFronzo vineyards.

Fair pricing makes Giuseppe’s popular with locals, tourists and students alike. The excellent quality of both food and customer service keeps everyone coming back. Giuseppe’s gluten-free

and/or vegetarian options make meal choices accessible for all patrons.

It is no surprise this staple has earned its place as the best Italian restaurant SLO has to offer.

Above all, SloDoCo’s sense of community is clear based on its reputation alone. With an environment so welcoming, couples have even gotten engaged at the shop! The community fostered at the store is a classic smalltown feel that welcomes everyone.

As SloDoCo feeds hungry Cal Poly students at all hours of the day, they always keep you in mind. Their website assures you by saying, “Can’t choose just one? Don’t worry; we have a dozen box with your name on it.”

Moondoggies Beach Club

Conveniently located downtown at the corner of Chorro and Monterey Street, Moondoggies Beach Club is a hub for Cal Poly students hoping to skate, surf or soak up some rays on the Central Coast. Since 1986, the locally-owned surf shop has provided community members the attire and supplies for their outdoor adventures. The store’s walls are adorned with old surfboards and skateboards in every color, as well as beach hut-themed structures.

“We try to transport you to a different place when you come here,” assistant manager Luke Edler said. “We make it

a place where you can shop, but also just hang out and talk about surfing and skating.”

The store stocks a range of popular skate and surf brands, many unique to the area alongside their own line of Moondoggies merchandise. Moondoggies prides itself on being accessible to all surfers regardless of experience level.

“A lot of our customers that we help with surf-related gear are beginners. If you want to come and get some cheaper gear that’ll get you in the water, we’re a great place to start,” Edler said.

With summer approaching, Moondoggies is an essential stop when making a trip downtown. Check out the San Luis Obispo location at 837 Monterey St., or the Pismo Beach storefront at 781 Dolliver St.

BEST SURF SPOT

Morro Rock

With so many beaches around San Luis Obispo, it may feel hard to choose which spot has the best surf.

Morro Rock in Morro Bay is a renowned surf spot that Poly Picks voters say has the best break on the Central Coast.

Falls and winters bring the best surf with the biggest and most consistent waves of the year. As the temperatures rise, springs and summers have all the locals and college kids heading to the beaches around San Luis Obispo to soak up the sun. With six miles of coastline, surfers can spread out if it gets too busy by Morro Rock. Many advanced surfers go a few hundred yards north of the rock to “the pit.”

Nonetheless, the picturesque Morro Rock allows surfers to catch waves next to the famous 576-foot rock and enjoy slightly cooler weather with the short drive north from San Luis Obispo. The long waves are a surfer’s dream.

Morro Bay’s beaches are filled with sand dollars that surfers can grab as a memento. Then, a short drive away, surfers can immerse themselves further in the beachfront town.

One of the best parts about surfing near Morro Rock is that there is plenty of parking, especially in cooler months. The extra space allows surfers to change into their wetsuits and grab their

boards. A short walk to the beach and you’re in the cool, refreshing water of Morro Bay.

Bishop Peak

San Luis Obispo and hiking go hand in hand. Just a mile away from campus, Bishop Peak stands out above the rest — literally!

The trail peaks at 1,549 feet in elevation and is the highest of the Nine Sisters of San Luis Obispo County. Bishop Peak can be seen from Cal Poly campus or downtown. The Central Coast centerpiece stands in the neighborhood off of Foothill Drive.

There is a reason this hike is part of the Tri-Tip Challenge. The 3.5-mile out-and-back trail features a handful of switchbacks and a climb of a few rocks at the top is home to a breathtaking

360-degree view of all of the town. In total, the hike should take between two and three hours. Many hikers chose to hang out at the top, eat a snack and listen to music before heading back down.

The trail is open yearround and it is one of the best spots to hike and a great trail for a person looking to take their dog with them. With trailheads on Patricia Drive and Highland Drive, whichever uphill trek is taken is worth it for the

spectacular summit overlook. Other activities include bird watching, running and rock climbing at Bishop Peak.

Located only 15 minutes from Cal Poly, Avila Beach has everything one could want from a quick beach day.

From its row of shops and restaurants to swing sets on the sand, Avila has a wide variety of attractions that allow visitors to relax and take in the view of the water. Unlike some other beaches, Avila usually has a decent amount of free parking available, which factors into what makes it a favorite spot for Cal Poly students.

breathtaking 360-degree view of San Luis Obispo including Morro Rock and the Nine Sisters chain. In between are vistas of grass hills that fade away as the oranges and pinks of the sunset escape behind the horizon.

There is no better spot in all of San Luis Obispo — and maybe California — to see the sunset. The location is second to none. The scenic overlook is tucked right into the city and the sights at the top show all the beauty of the Central Coast from the mountains to the beaches.

Many will take snacks and a blanket to picnic at the top as they watch the day slip away.

Simply put, words cannot describe how incredible Prefumo Canyon is. You must go check it out for yourself!

The main beachfront spans over 2000 feet, leaving plenty of room for people to lay down a towel, relax and enjoy the atmosphere. The beachfront also has a pier that stretches 1,685 feet long.

Unfortunately, the pier has been closed for a few years now based on structural engineering recommendations, but visitors can still walk under it during their stroll through the sand.

Avila Beach also hosts a weekly farmer’s market every Friday, where vendors, accompanied by live music, sell local produce.

During most of the year, the weather at the beach is perfect, with sunny weather warm enough to warrant a quick swim in the ocean. Due to the weather and soft sand, many visitors can be seen spending time in the water.

Hotel SLO

Hotel San Luis Obispo has established itself as a hot spot for residents and people who visit San Luis Obispo.

It’s located on Palm Street, in what used to be San Luis Obispo’s vibrant Chinatown. Lots of Chinese-inspired architecture and artwork are featured in the hotel’s three stories.

Right as you walk in, the circular living wall draws inspiration from moongate passageways in Chinese gardens. The logo, which utilizes the letters “S-L-O”, is meant to look like an abstract face.

The restaurant, Piadina, extends through the entire ground floor and into a back patio space. On Mondays, their pizzas are half-off, drawing in college students looking for a nice meal on a budget. The rooftop bar, called the High Bar, offers panoramic views of downtown San Luis Obispo and beyond, and they’re even more enjoyable with a specialty house cocktail in hand.

Most rooms in the hotel have private balconies, perfect for sunbathing and seeing San Luis Obispo from new heights.

With more than 100 vendors set up across several downtown city blocks, the Farmers’ Market is not something to miss. The market is a relaxing way to unwind from the week and get outside with other members of the SLO community. This evening activity can also lead into the night if you choose

to stay for dinner or visit some of the downtown bars.

The vendors consistently feature new items depending on the season, so there are goods for any occasion. Not only are there booths with products for sale, but local organizations will also often be present to share information about their missions and values.

Shell Beach

Now that the rainy weather is behind us, we can finally go outside and bask in the sun. Get some friends together, grab some snacks and go enjoy a picnic at Shell Beach. This is a small, quiet spot less than 20 minutes away from campus.

Don’t let the name fool you: You won’t find many seashells, but there are a lot of opportunities to climb and explore the rocks. Make sure to bring closed-toe shoes because the sand is very rocky.

This beach isn’t crowded like Avila and Pismo, so it’s a great spot to lay out and relax. Surrounded by cliffs, the beach feels private and free of tourists, and it's

a great alternative to Pirate’s Cove if the busy beaches aren’t your scene. There aren’t any stores and shops within walking distance, so make sure to pack plenty of snacks. If you’re looking to surf or swim, you’ll want to go somewhere else because of the large rocks near the shore.

This is a great beach to walk around and explore; the cliffs are fascinating to look at and there are a few open crevasses for bonfires. The beach is mainly populated with locals playing with their dogs, so there is plenty of room to spread out on a big picnic blanket.

Next time you have a free afternoon, grab some good food, good friends and enjoy this quiet and beautiful spot.

Mustang Village Townhomes

Securing housing in San Luis Obispo is a battle anywhere, but if you are searching for the epicenter, look no further than the Mustang Village Townhomes. The townhomes easily sell out before most other apartments, so if you are interested in these hot commodities, you will have to move quickly.

The apartment complex's popularity is a tribute to its quality. The apartment homes come fully furnished with stainless steel appliances in renovated units, vinyl wood plank flooring and air conditioning units in some 2x2 townhomes.

Mustang Village claims the title for the

closest off-campus housing by far. It is even closer to campus staples such as Kennedy Library and the Recreation Center than both on-campus continued student living communities and some first-year residence halls. Mustang Village has its own walking path feeding directly into campus next to Alex G Spanos Stadium.

As the name suggests, these townhomes are filled with Mustangs due to the sheer number of continued students who snatch up these residences each year.

Aside from proximity, Mustang Village provides ample amenities with two community pools, a fitness center, six

laundry centers, a private park equipped with barbecues and unlimited utilities included in monthly rent. Student’s often have more important things to worry about than being overcharged for your utilities, so that’s why Mustang Village offers unlimited electricity usage with no hidden fees or caps to ease tenants' peace of mind.

The complex is located next to bustling streets like Foothill and California Boulevard with numerous, essential stores in walking distance such as Rite Aid, Lassens, California Fresh Market, Scout Coffee and 7-Eleven.

Kennedy Library

With constant assignments and tests, finding a place to study can be challenging, especially during midterm and finals season. Kennedy Library is the place to go, offering numerous amenities and resources to utilize.

To satisfy hunger during long hours of studying and classes, students can head to Julian’s Café Bistro, open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and located on the second floor near the staircase. Julian’s offers a variety of drinks from caffeinated to non-caffeinated and food options such as pastries and sandwiches.

Kennedy Library also offers various environments and noise levels on each of the five floors, accessible by the elevator or stairs. The first few floors are louder for collaboration with friends; discussions overlap with one another contributing to the overall sound. As one escalates to the higher levels, the environment becomes tranquil, offering a quiet and focused ambiance for studying.

Resources at the library include printers and computers available for use. Located around the library, with the use of one’s PolyID and Cal Poly

login, one can access a monitor to view assignments or print out papers for class. Study rooms can also be requested and used for group projects and working with others. The rooms offer screens and whiteboards to work on assignments. Numerous outlets are also provided throughout the library to accommodate the number of students and electronics. Most outlets can be found along the walls by the windows, the windows providing natural light and the outlets preventing worry about electronics running out of battery.

Cal Poly’s Kennedy Library is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays and closed on Saturdays. For days when the library isn’t open, there is the Hub24, located alongside the main library, open all day, every day.

BEST ON-CAMPUS LAWN

Dexter Lawn

Arguably the central hub of Cal Poly’s campus, Dexter Lawn brings together a large amount of Cal Poly’s student body. The lawn is located across from the Walter F. Dexter building and relatively close to the library, architecture and engineering buildings. Many students pass through the lawn on their commute to their classes, giving it a lively atmosphere.

Dexter Lawn is also a popular stop for clubs and organizations to set up booths, giving it a feature that most other lawns on campus do not have. Sometimes clothing vendors can be spotted setting up shop on the lawn,

giving students an opportunity for a quick thrift session between classes. And, if you’re lucky, some booths often hand out free food.

The lawn is also very open, with shade provided by tall California redwood trees. The lawn can provide a relaxing intermission and getaway from the stress of classes. There can be almost something enlightening when one lays in the grass after sitting in a classroom for most other parts of their day. The cool grass paired with the warm energy gifted by the sun can be a truly euphoric experience

BEST REC CENTER CLASS

With access to the Recreation Center, students can take part in more than 15 different fitness classes, from Aqua Fit to Fusion Pilates. However, the yoga classes stand out above the rest.

There are a handful of yoga offerings all with their own special purpose. Vinyasa Flow is what one would picture when hearing the term “yoga class.” As the name suggests, Vinyasa Flow focuses on breathing and a seamless connection between yoga poses. Everyone from beginners to experienced yogis will enjoy this class.

Next up is Yin Yoga. Yin is one of the best ways to wake up in the morning because it is a slower form of yoga and participants will spend most of their time on the ground. Yin Yoga takes one through conscious breathing and longheld stretches.

Hatha Yoga focuses on breath and posture the most out of any of the classes. The meditative practice helps individuals center their minds and bodies to create a connection of balance, power and strength. Poses and postures are more static and held for longer periods of time.

Power Flow is a more energetic version of Vinyasa Flow.

Sculpt is one of the more intense yoga classes. It combines the flowing movement of Vinyasa with interval cardio training. It is a workout that gets the heart rate up while also helping students stretch and tone their bodies. Small hand weights are commonly used in this class to increase the intensity. However, like all yoga classes, it ends with the calming savasana pose to cool down, where the yogi lays on their back connecting the body, breath and mind.
