United Batanguenos of Southern California, Inc.
UBSCI (United Batanguenos of Southern California, Inc.) was initiated by the tireless efforts of a successful businessman, Mel Mantuano on September 7, 1987. His main goal was and is to unify various clubs and hometown associations affiliated with the province of Batangas into a single cohesive unit to serve as an umbrella organization for all Batanguenos who were and permanently residing in Southern California at that time. Mr. Mantuano received very strong support from fellow Batanguenos such as: Joe Carlos, Greg Arriola, Roland Boceta, Alvin Castillo, Teddy Katigbak, and Willie Mendoza. This group spearheaded by Mel became the nucleus of UBSCI. On February 21, 1988, there were nine more efficient members who were added to the names mentioned above: Art Catapang, Romy de las Alas, Vic Chavez, Rollie Inciong, Robert Masangkay, Hermie Maramot, Paz Concordia, Ernie Remo and Zenny Sulit-Zoleta who suggested the name United Batanguenos of Southern California. Its name was unanimously approved by the body and on that day, Mr. Mel Mantuano was elected as the first UBSCI governor and known as “The Founder of UBSCI.” The legacy continued and other governors elected and have served their two-year- term include: Art Catapang, Romy de las Alas, Lydia Emnace, Cely de Sagun-Anuran, Johnny Pecayo, Willie Manacsa, Rose Pascua, Zenny Zoleta, Eric Villafranca (deceased), Nora Jusi, Roman Castillo, Romy Elepaño. Mylee Moncada-Ong is the current governor and is serving the second year of her term. In 1999, after Cely de Sagun-Anuran was elected and installed as Governor at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel, she incorporated UBSC, thus changing the name to UBSCI (United Batangueños of Southern California, Inc.). This idea was initiated by the previous governor, Lydia Emnace. The mission and vision statements of UBSCI still stand today: to help poor but deserving high school graduate scholars to attend college and choose their profession by maintaining academic excellence within the 4-year-term. These scholars have to go to a college or university within the province of Batangas. As of now, eight recipients have already benefited from our Scholarship Program spearheaded by Cely de Sagun-Anuran. UBSCI is still standing. It is actively on its 30th year of existence. The elected officers hold their positions for a two-year-term. Our website/fanpage is its first official one and hopes to be of service to reach out to the community here in LA County, the whole of Southern California and to extend through all the Batangueños in the province of Batangas and Batangueños all over the world.
