MESSAGE

On behalf of the University of the Philippines, I extend my warmest greetings to the UP High Preparatory Elementary Integrated School Alumni Association of North America (UPHPEISAANA) on your 7th Annual Grand Reunion and Induction of Officers. I greet you, the UPHPEISAANA officers and members, families and friends, on this joyous and momentous occasion.

I also congratulate the newly inducted officers of the UPHPEIS-AANA. I sincerely thank the immediate past officers led by President UPHPEIS-AANA President Bobby Canseco for your loyal and dedicated service and outstanding leadership, and I join the UP Community in offering our continued support for the new UPHPEIS-AANA officers.

I have always believed that our alumni are our vital partners in achieving our vision of UP as a leading regional and global university. You, the members of the UPHPEIS-AANA, are proving this to be true. Through your fund-raising efforts, you have provided the school with a brand new set of audio equipment for the high school auditorium, and for the coming year, you are targeting other UPIS-initiated projects such as termite treatment for the classrooms, repainting of the grades 3-6 library, and acquiring furniture and computers for the high school laboratory. Your support of the UPIS’ public school teacher training programs also helps improve the quality of education the UPIS students receive. For all of these, and all other projects you may choose to undertake in the future, I thank you. However, while all of these are substantial contributions, your most valuable gift is your unwavering faith in your Alma Mater. The UPIS continues to uphold the legacies of honor and excellence of its previous incarnations: the UP High School, the UP Preparatory School, the UP Elementary School, and even briefly the UP Comprehensive High School and the University High School. Its alumni continue to reap honors in every field. Indeed, just recently, a UPHPEIS alumnus, Maestro Ryan Cayabyab, was elevated to National Artist.

Our UPIS students continue in this tradition, excelling in academics, in sports, in the arts and media, overcoming perennial barriers such as a lack of budget or equipment along the way. While we are working to remove these barriers, watching our UPIS students excel and seeing the achievements of our UPHPEIS alumni has inspired in me a recognition of the confidence, courage and indomitable spirit, the lakas ng loob, of the UPIS graduate. Long may this spirit reign.

Maraming salamat po. Mabuhay kayo, UPHPEIS-AANA, at maligayang pasko sa inyong lahat!

DANILO L. CONCEPCION President

MESSAGE On behalf of the Officers and members of the Organizing Committee (OC) of the UPHPEIS-AANA, it gives me the greatest pleasure to welcome all of you to our 7th Grand Annual Reunion in Whittier, California! Our theme this year is, “Sustaining our Commitment of Support to UPIS.” We are a young alumni association, borne out of the desire to support our Alma Mater when opportunity presented itself eight years ago. The indomitable spirit of a dozen individuals, with that “Yes we can, and yes we will!” attitude, has allowed us to bring many alumni from all over USA, Canada and the Philippines. Since our first reunion in 2011, we have all contributed towards the improvement of the UPIS’ new facilities and adoption of specific classrooms in 2012 through our fundraising efforts along with the provision of equipment and furniture in 2014. We have provided funds to support displaced UP Tacloban students following typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013, and for the construction of a guardhouse on the UPIS campus in 2015. We have also attained our tax exempt 501(C)3 status in 2015! We cancelled our annual reunion in 2016 to mourn the passing of our past President Melba Solidum-Lim, but we resumed our annual gathering on December 2, 2017 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Whittier CA. We successfully raised funds for the purchase of an audio-visual equipment for the Bulwagan Hall in the Elementary building. Unfortunately, another HS batch beat us to it by donating another equipment. So instead, we purchased and shipped the audio equipment for the large Auditorium in the high school building. We also supported the UPIS Teacher’s program of conducting workshops to train public school teachers to prepare them for the new K-12 education program. Now we are again gathered, not just for the joy of renewing ties and friendships, but also to continue our funding efforts in support of UPIS’s top 10 projects and its public school teacher training workshops. As “Iskolars ng Bayan”, we will continue to reach out and support deserving public schools in coordination with UPIS - to bring honor and praise to our Alma Mater. Whether you graduated or partially attended UPHPEIS, remember you belong here! Mabuhay at pagpalain tayo ng ating Dios. Maligayang Pasko at Manigong Bagong Taon!

BOBBY CANSECO President, UPHPEIS AANA

University of the Philippines INTEGRATED SCHOOL

We join UP High-Prep-Elem-Integrated School Alumni Association of North America (UPHPEISANA) in celebrating the 7th Annual Grand Reunion and Induction of Officers! I came to know your group through your president, Mr. Bobby Canseco (UP High ’73), who visited UPIS sometime in February 2018 . Everytime a batch of alumni like you, visit UPIS and tour around the new school building, we, teachers, take pleasure in listening to your narratives of classroom memories, experiences with teachers, childish quarrels, pure and authentic friendships, and all pursuits and adventures of growing and learning. In the process of your recollection, we are amazed at how instantly you are transformed as high school boys and girls again, teasing and laughing, recounting jokes only your class shares and understands. We are grateful that for this year, the celebration articulates your continuing commitment to support UPIS. Last September 2018, we received the PA system you sent and it was set up in the auditorium. Through this message, we are sending our thanks to UPHPEIS-ANA . Your support inspires us to maintain excellence which you, our graduates have continued to exemplify. Your support, as your way of giving back to your former school manifests service. As we relentlessly aspire for a better society for Filipinos, we know that our work of educating our students, with you as our partners will mean something in the future. Mabuhay ang UPHPEIS-ANA!

UPHPEIS PROJECTS UPDATE

In 2011, a call was sounded from Manila to “Adopt a Classroom” and provide for the classroom needs of the newly constructed UP Integrated School (UPIS) facility. US-based alumni from each class of ’70, ’71, ’72, ‘73, ’75, and ‘76 sprang into action and held monthly meetings. They created a database of alumni from North America, which would become the basis for soliciting donations to fund the UPIS needs. Calling themselves the “Organizing Committee” (OC), these dedicated and motivated alumni reached out across the US, Canada and the Philippines and hosted the First Grand Reunion in December 2011 at the Holiday Inn-Buena Park, CA. It was a fun-filled event attended by 220 alumni and guests! Encouraged by this successful turnout, the OC again hosted the 2nd Grand Reunion in December 2012 in the same location. At this time the first set of officers were inducted into office. A silent auction and raffle yielded $2500, which allowed the UPHPEIS-AANA and UP High ’70 in tandem to initially “adopt” the Geography Room.

Our 3rd Grand Reunion in December 2013 was held again at the Holiday Inn-Buena Park. We celebrated not just the adoption of our classroom but effective November 2013, we were legally recognized as a Non-Profit California Corporation and approved as a 501(c)3 non-profit, tax exempt organization.

In late 2013, Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) caused extreme devastation with untold numbers of lost lives and property damage especially in the City of Tacloban. Moved by this tragic incident, the OC organized a dinner dance on June 21, 2014 and successfully raised and donated $1,000 to UP’s current assistance program for those students.

Our 4th Grand Reunion on December 7, 2014 was at the Diamond Bar Golf Course & Banquet Facilities. The 5th one was held on December 5, 2015 at Josephine’s Bistro in Cerritos, CA. We continued our efforts to raise funds for the recently constructed UPIS building to support the completion of other classrooms and related school projects. In 2016, the OC cancelled its annual grand reunion to mourn the passing of our 1st UPHPEIS President Melba Solidum Lim; she went home to be with the Lord on October 30, 2016, and she is sorely missed. The 6th Grand reunion resumed on December 2, 2017 at the DoubleTree Hotel Whittier, raising funds for the school’s audio-visual and sound system for the Bulwagan Room. The audio equipment was delivered to UPIS in early 2018 but was set-up at the High School Auditorium where it was needed more. Also this year, we partnered with the UPIS Extension Service Committee, which conducts public school teacher workshop-seminars to help prepare public school teachers for the new K-12 education program. Our first beneficiaries were the Camp Crame High School teachers.

We remain committed to participate in various opportunities to give back of ourselves, our time and our resources for the benefit of our Alma Mater. Let us continue to support the students of UPIS and help establish their bright future by providing them with the best possible tools for attaining the highest standard of education today.
