he journey of longtime friends Julien Lombrail and Loïc Le Gaillard started 13 years ago, when they opened their inaugural space in a former carpenter’s workshop in London’s Chelsea neighborhood. Two years later, in 2008, they opened another space, this time in the upscale neighborhood of Mayfair, and the only one in the British capital. In 2011, it was on to Paris. Then came 2015, a milestone year for the French duo, who launched Carpenters Workshop Roissy, an 86,000-square-foot space on the outskirts of Paris dedicated to bringing together the most talented artisans for the purpose of artistic research and development. The same year, they opened Carpenters Workshop Gallery in the United States, on New York’s Fifth Avenue. Since then, the gallery’s reputation for producing and exhibiting functional sculptures by both established artists and new talent has grown. Success, however, does not stop here for the French entrepreneurs. Attracting more and more collectors all over the U.S., Lombrail and Le Gaillard recently decided it was the right time to take the plunge with a new, permanent location on the West Coast. “After opening our East Coast space, we quickly began to grow our client base across the United States and thus have been frequenting San Francisco,” Le Gaillard says. “We were immediately struck by the city’s rich cultural scene and vibrant design landscape. The fact that San Francisco is supported by an active and engaged collector base made the city a clear choice. We also feel that more than other cities in the U.S., the taste of the new generations in San Francisco is evolving quickly towards a more contemporary approach, where craft and technology exist side by side, which is exactly what we do.”

owner, renowned design impresario Ken Fulk. “For our West Coast debut, we were looking for an unusual space—off the beaten path in an architecturally interesting space, as we do for our other galleries,” explains Le Gaillard. “The former Saint Joseph’s Church, which has been immaculately resurrected by Ken Fulk, not only seduced us by its splendor and potential, but also by Ken’s singular vision for this unique project.” Occupying the mezzanine of the building, the gallery’s surrounds offer many possibilities to be creative and innovative. Pieces by iconic artists including Nacho Carbonell, Atelier Van Lieshout, Maarten Baas, Wendell Castle, Vincenzo De Cotiis, Mathieu Lehanneur, Sebastian Brajkovic and Studio Job will be regularly featured as part of the impressive decor spread over 9,000 square feet. On the ground floor, boutiques including the sole U.S. shop of French apothecary brand Buly 1803, an Assouline book corner and Ken Fulk’s Flower Factory complement the curated offerings for design and art lovers. “The interaction with the Saint Joseph’s Art Society should also create an interesting cross-pollination between the city’s creative community,” says Le Gaillard. Every year, the program at Carpenters Workshop Gallery San Francisco will include two individual exhibitions, in addition to the rotating artworks.

WOR LD Design Fortuny

Established at the beginning of the 20th century by its innovative, enterprising namesake, preeminent fabric brand Fortuny remains a force in 21st century design.

Words by

JEN N THOR NTON

“The Painters Children in the Japanese Room,” an 1874 oil on canvas, hangs with renown at the Museo Del Prado in Spain and is significant for its clear artistic merits and the intimacy of its subject—the painter’s children, daughter Maria Luisa and son Mariano, members of what was then considered Spain’s most artistically accomplished family. Just 3 years old in the painting, little Mariano sits on a divan, a silk textile covering his fragile form, with his inspection of the material marking a ripening interest. The boy who grew to become the preeminent textile designer and creative engine of his age, known to the world by only one name—Fortuny—needed first to grow into his gifts. In Paris, he painted with his uncles and studied sculpture with Rodin; in Germany, he learned chemistry; and in Venice, he discovered his life’s work, parlaying early experimentations with electricity into a lighting innovation for the theater and, with his wife Henriette, fashioning the Delphos dress, which transformed early 1900’s fashion from restrictive to elegantly comfortable, worn by the likes of dancer Isadora Duncan. All the while at his home, Mariano was printing textiles. When the outbreak of World War One complicated sourcing silk and velvet from Italy, he changed his medium to cotton and took a painter’s approach to make the material look like silk, applying layer upon layer of color, achieving the best of both worlds: a fabric with the aesthetic richness of silk or velvet but with the durability of cotton. “When woven,” explains Mickey Riad, current creative director of Fortuny, which he co-owns with his brother and sister, “100 percent, long staple Egyptian cotton has much more overlap, which gives the material strength, along with a beautiful sheen and an amazing capacity to absorb color.”

Design Fortuny

As demand for his textiles increased, Mariano established a factory in a former convent on the island of Giudecca. Opened in 1921, the factory is still the base of Fortuny’s production, currently staffed by 28 artisans “using the same machines and secret technique and processes that Mariano developed a century ago,” says Riad, whose tenure at Fortuny began after his father, an attorney, inherited the company from Mariano’s sole predecessor, American interior designer Elsie McNeill Lee (later Countess Elsie Lee Gozzi), the exclusive distributor of Fortuny through her Madison Avenue showroom. Named Mariano’s successor by his widow Henriette, the Countess did more than anyone to bring the brand from the churches and museums of Mariano’s day into people’s home. This responsibility is now the Riads. Just 22 and 23 at the time the brothers Riad started rebuilding Fortuny from the ground-up, they were at first viewed skeptically (“the final nails in Fortuny’s coffin,” as Mickey remembers it). It was, he continues, “Who are these young punks who think they can come take over the Rolls Royce of fabrics?” But in slowly remaking the company they have known their entire lives, the Riads won over representatives.

PHOTOGR APHS: COURTESY OF FORTUNY

Today, in addition to 400 fabrics, Fortuny has international showrooms across the globe, including a beautiful new boutique inside Dessin Fournir on La Cienaga in Los Angeles. They recently launched a new fabric collection in Paris inspired by the origins and writings of Taoism and this year will introduce new collaborations that join Fortuny at the Met in New York, Brick House by Philip Johnson, Blair House in D.C.; Hermitage in St. Petersburg and many other places. Its fabrics were also central to Maria Grazia Chiuri’s last haute couture collection with Pierpaolo Piccioli for Valentino. The challenge for Fortuny is moving toward the future while honoring the past. “For many years we looked at it as being curators of a legacy and preserving it,” says Mickey. “We realized that it’s not just about the history, it’s about the spirit of Mariano Fortuny. That allowed us to take the brand to the next level. Mariano revolutionized the world of fashion, theater, lighting and textiles, and influenced almost every person on the planet in some form or another. Fortuny has always been about the future.” fortuny.com

In applying a modern, très chic touch to a Parisian townhouse for Christian Dior, two of the most significant creative accomplices in the couturier’s world pushed forward a new frontier for interior design.

The beautiful, sophisticated fashions of Dior set the tone for his interiors.

do with the family heirlooms project. Everything was fresh, luxurious and, because it was Dior, garnered a great deal of publicity.

n the years following the Second World War, Christian Dior’s iconic “New Look” presented a stunning sartorial rethink; this broad call to civility was brave, bold permission to dream again, and to dress. It was also a vision, one that the paragon of Parisian fashion and two of his colleagues and contemporaries, both influential French aesthetes, adapted into a fresh interior style. Chronicled in the lush new tome Dior and His Decorators: Victor Grandpierre, Georges Geoffroy and the New Look, the little-known story is a fascinating exploration of the relationship between fashion and design—and three exceptionally brilliant men.

“It really launched this whole idea of what I call ‘New Look’ decoration, which was the equivalent of the New Look dress in interior design,” describes Maureen Footer, author of Dior and His Decorators. One found the architecture, boning, structure and careful seaming that defined Dior designs in the interiors of a house that was fashion itself, full of life-resonating rooms. “All three thought about the great French classical tradition,” says Footer, “and yet because they were contemporary men who were part of the artistic dialogue of their time, they also brought a real modern sensibility to the house. The rooms were beautiful, but also incredibly luxurious, warm, comfortable, and I would say even sexy, which a wonderful word because these were rooms that embraced life and drew you in. Rooms you wanted to run into, have a delicious glass of champagne and gossip.”

All born at the beginning of the 20th century, Dior, Grandpierre and Geoffroy had intersecting talents and a shared perspective informed by living in monumental times, during which they not only experienced war, revolution and intense geopolitical shifts, but exoticism and Modernism, flappers and jazz. An artist and dreamer who loved architecture, Dior shrugged off a career in diplomacy for the cabarets and cultured bohemia of Paris. In this fluid moment, Dior met the well-connected Geoffroy, who was doing film sets and fashion illustrations. While Geoffroy continued to work in couture, Dior established a flourishing art gallery. Once the Great Depression made a risky investment of contemporary art, Geoffroy engineered Dior’s introduction to the proper haute couture circles in France. Later, when the occupation of Paris saw Dior flee to the South of France, he met the artistically gifted Grandpierre, a photographer working in the theater. With a natural affinity for one another and a similar vision, Dior and Grandpierre forged the creative partnership that would power the Dior brand back in Paris.

Heritage Dior

A house that contemporized old codes and conventions while simultaneously resuscitated French classicism was a true novelty at the time. “What was so daring was that they knew the rules well enough to know how to break them successfully,” says Footer. “The fact that they used 18th century French furniture in an everyday way, they connected the past to the present.” Other elements, like sumptuous fabric in gorgeous jewel tones and rich floral colors, reverberated a modern current throughout the house. Consider what were smokingroom touches—leather tufted sofa, Louis XVI chairs, a humidor, cognac decanter and English mahogany—in the solarium, rather than the usual suspects of delicate ferns and metal and wicker furnishings.

Deeply entrenched in the Dior universe, Grandpierre designed Dior boutiques, micro-managed matters of packaging, branding and more; Geffroy, more than anyone, created sumptuous, elegant interiors that spoke to the same inspiration as Dior’s dresses. In this context, they turned their creative attentions to designing a town home suitable to the couturier’s skyrocketing station—7, Boulevard Jules-Sandeau. Where Dior boutiques featured a calm, gray and white palette to show off the clothes, the designer’s townhouse mixed elements of French classicism with an exuberant 1950’s freshness. One of the first Parisian homes redecorated top to bottom after the war, this was not another making

As all great homes do, 7, Boulevard Jules-Sandeau reflected its owner. Dior the man was a lover of art, music and history whose acquisitions in the home illustrated these passions with a poise the designer always showed. In sum, Footer says, “The house is really his statement of what constitutes civility. There’s all this joyous sensuousness—upholstered walls, rich velvet, beautiful flowers, French furniture. All of it shows that he was a very civilized man. He enjoyed the richness of life and made every day an occasion.” A vision still very much in fashion.

aking 10 years to complete, The Jaffa, a unique project located in a historic yet vibrant area in Tel Aviv, hosts 120 rooms and suites, and 30 luxury residences. Owned by New Yorkbased hotel and real estate company RFR Holding (founded by Aby Rosen) and operated by Marriott’s The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts, The Jaffa opened its doors last August in a 19th-century neo-Roman structure, which was once a hospital and French monastery. The hotel also spills over into the adjacent, contemporary building. British designer John Pawson led the whole project with the help of local architect Ramy Gill—who specializes in conservation—and a team of restoration experts, making sure the property would be aligned with contemporary travelers’ needs while paying tribute to its past. “After purchasing the building, I asked Pawson to bring his minimalist interpretation to the classical monastery building,” says Rosen. “His sensitivity to the incredible history manifests itself in his thoughtful design, introducing new life and purpose to the building.” Situated at the top of the 4,000-year-old Jaffa Port, the hotel features panoramic views of the Old City, the sea and the contemporary skyline of Tel Aviv, where classic, art deco and modernist buildings coexist. The lobby welcomes guests with historic vestiges from a 13th-century bastion wall. Mid-century pieces by Japanese designer Shiro Kuramata and French designer Pierre Paulin, as well as artworks by Damien Hirst surprisingly yet harmoniously complement the atmosphere, and set the tone for the blend of old and new that permeate the rest of the hotel. Both this wing and the U-shaped historical building comprising outdoor corridors with columns and arches, and lofty ceilings—all reminiscent of the past— surround a peaceful, leafy courtyard.

“Throughout the project, the aim has been to preserve and retune the existing historic and archaeological structures whilst also adding significant contemporary elements.”

Wanderlust The Jaffa

The hotel’s two restaurants occupy the basement of the old structure, featuring original vaulted ceilings. Don Camillo serves a blend of Italian and Mediterranean flavors, while Golda, a New York-style deli with a bistro feel, is in a space with raw stone walls. In every room and suite, soft tones prevail, creating a relaxing ambience, with photographs by Israeli artist Tal Shochat adorning the walls. In some areas of the contemporary building, Pawson introduced modern elements while also referencing the traditional architecture of the Middle East, such as the Mashrabiya, a type of decorative bay window typical of Arabic residences. Also part of the experience: an outdoor swimming pool, sundeck, fitness center, shop, 4,500-square-foot L. Raphael spa and lounge with Pawson-designed backgammon tables that pay homage to traditional games that merchants play in the Jaffa market. “Throughout the project, the aim has been to preserve and retune the existing historic and archaeological structures whilst also adding significant contemporary elements, creating a powerful new spatial narrative, charged with atmosphere and a seamless sense of place, plans and elevations flexing in response to the site walls and to key landmarks in the surrounding cityscape,” Pawson says. With recessed stained-glass windows, majestic arched ceilings and ornate plasterwork details, the most impressive space—furnished with contemporary, colorful seating and tables—is The Chapel, a bar lounge that truly epitomizes the designer’s vision of making the most of the grandeur of a historic building while giving it a new life. thejaffahotel.com

PHILANTHROPY | COVENANT HOUSE

It’s an opportunity for our young people to be around people who have had some success, who can share their stories and share love in a really positive way. -Bill Bedrossian, on the benefits of Covenant House California volunteers

Independence Movement Words by Constance Dunn

G

ive a man a fish, it’s said, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. In the case of Covenant House, the nonprofit that for over 40 years has helped nearly 80,000 homeless young people a year, the saying could be: Teach at-risk youth important life skills, and you’ll help house them for a lifetime.

Philanthropy - Covenant House

Founded in the 1970s in New York City, Covenant House has since expanded to 31 locations, primarily in the United States. The largest organization of its kind in the nation, Covenant House is currently in the midst of a rapid expansion plan, and Orange County is on their radar. “There is no one serving those 18- to 24-yearold young people who are experiencing homelessness, at least from the perspective of providing them with housing,” says Bill Bedrossian, CEO of Covenant House California, of the nonprofit’s California locations. Covenant House California is a 24/7 operation, with doors open to youth in crisis needing immediate shelter, as well as those seeking longer term, transitional housing. In addition, the nonprofit has developed a comprehensive body of services—from job training to substance abuse counseling—to support youth from all walks of life, with the objective of freeing them from homelessness forever. This goal, however, requires much more than putting a roof over a young person’s head. “We take a holistic approach when we talk about healing with young people,” says Bedrossian. “First and foremost we are talking about basic needs, such as their physical health. But then also their mental health, as well as their spiritual well-being. For a lot of young people, that’s an important part of who they are, and who they want to be.” covenanthousecalifornia.org

What are some of Covenant House’s biggest successes? We’ve got a 40-year track record, as well as some really well-developed best practices that we know work. We know that 92 percent of the young people that move through our program, to the transitional housing and end up independent—stay independent. We feel proud of what we do and we know that it works with young people.

Philanthropy - Covenant House

Is Covenant House involved with victims of human trafficking?

The reality is homeless youth are the most vulnerable population to human trafficking. That’s not specific to L.A. County or anywhere else in the country; it’s also happening in Orange County. About one out of every four young people that we work with tells us about experiences of being trafficked—primarily sex trafficking, but also labor trafficking—while they’re homeless.

How does Covenant House receive funding? We are primarily funded through the goodness of people’s hearts, as well as some very generous corporations and foundations. We’re excited to be able to provide service in Orange County because of a lot of our support comes from really generous people in Orange County, and they are very excited to support something right in their backyard. What should potential volunteers know? What I think is so unique about how we ask people to volunteer is, we tell people: ‘Whatever you love to do, please come do that with our young people.’ It can be playing basketball, playing board games, doing Bible studies or teaching financial literacy. Anything. It’s an opportunity for our young people to be around people who have had some success, who can share their stories and share love in a really positive way.
