Remembering Holiday as the “perfect training ground” for her storied career, Ms. Fiori expands on her journey to the top, and exploring new territory.

Pamela, you have such an amazing story. Was journalism always your path? Before I entered the world of magazines, I taught English at a high school in New Jersey, where I was born and raised. It never occurred to me to have ambitions as an editor until I walked into the editorial offices at Holiday. That changed everything. In what way did working at Holiday hone the perspective you later brought to Travel+Leisure and Town & Country? By the time I got to Travel & Leisure and, later, Town & Country, I was well prepared to edit, come up with story ideas, work closely with writers and with artists and photographers. I also understood how important it was to respect my co-workers, vendors and

Why were you inspired to write Holiday now? Actually, the idea came from Charles Miers, the head of Rizzoli International. We were talking about book ideas and when he realized I’d gotten my start at Holiday—a magazine he greatly admired—he suggested that I write about its history. As far as it being the right time, I would say that it’s about time, even long overdue. I find the book to be a love letter to golden age of journalism. Do you? Magazine publishing, as well as all print journalism, had its heyday in the Fifties. Like the world of advertising, magazines were top of mind, even as television was making its mark. Americans were avid readers and depended on magazines as a form of entertainment, information and stimulation. Although glossy, Holiday was substantive in its featuring of many remarkable writers of the age, from Ernest Hemingway to Joan Didion. Did this compel you to the material? Indeed, it did—not only for me but for millions of readers who turned to Life, Look, The Saturday Evening Post and others to inform and uplift them. Excellent reporting and narrative writing as well as great photojournalism were a combination that was hard to beat.

What do you consider your most lasting mark on journalism? Putting the reader first, always and forever, and setting high standards for them, my staff and myself. Aside from being a prolific writer of travel, what kind of traveler are you? Discerning but not jaded. I am curious and intrepid but not reckless. I also know myself and my limits, and won’t do foolish things. On the other hand, being overly cautious might make one miss thrilling experiences. If you could pop into a piece that was written about in Holiday, what would it be? Are there other pieces that you found particularly enticing? E.B. White’s essay “Here is New York,” written in the late 1940s. Kenneth Tynan on Havana during Castro’s reign, including his visit with Ernest Hemingway. Budd Schulberg’s unflinching take on Hollywood. rovence is of a particular beauty, a honeypot of a place where one finds lively markets, lavender fields, sun-bleached buildings and medieval charms, all wrapped in a pastoral embrace that the rest of the world can only envy. Which is why so much of the world comes here, including Benoit Rauzy and Anthony Watson, who found in the region’s village Vallabrègues, much more than just another pretty town (and certainly more than they bargained for). Here was the heart of a rich heritage that runs deeps on the banks of the river Rhône and inspired their thoroughly French studio, Atelier Vime. Atelier Vime is a success story not unlike that of many others in that it began as a bit of a fluke. As fate would have it, Rauzy and Watson, who were already keen collectors of vintage rattan and wicker prior to their latest coup, were not searching for anything other than a new house when they happened on an old but well-preserved hôtel particulier; there, in a scattering of sketches and baskets in an unfinished condition were the remains of a once thriving wicker trade in the village, where in the 18th-century as many as 450 out of 1800 villagers were wickerworkers. The mansion in their midst, which was built in 1730 for a notable local family and went on to serve as a seat of wicker making, was in the thick of it. Larger than what the duo envisioned, but with a generous courtyard, the property’s patined walls, faded paint and beautifully preserved fireplaces spoke— immediately and viscerally—to their artistic inclinations. In its past they saw the future, and in this discovery was their decision to establish Atelier Vime.

Showing a raw talent for both business and beauty, Rauzy and Benoit installed a wicker studio in the building and would, with the help of Provençale craftspeople to bring their designs to life, along with three soaking ponds for fresh wicker on the property, find an audience rapt for its work and establish an exciting new era for a trade that for at least three decades in the village had been completely extinguished. Those days are done. Over a relatively few numbers of years, Atelier Vime expanded its foothold in the design world and today offers a variety of hand-woven vintage pieces by the likes of legendary midcentury designer Charlotte Perriand, for one distinguished example, as well as designs made from raffia and rope and a collection of contemporary furnishings and lighting. (Perhaps we should have seen the now-operational interiors business coming?) Backdropped by a beautiful historic building, the studio’s rich aesthetic milieu responds to the present—thanks in large part to an exquisitely curated social feed that has brought it to the attention to some of the biggest names in contemporary interiors, including L.A.-based David Netto and French favorite Pierre Yovanovitch—but is based on the past. At the core of everything at Atelier Vime is this heritage. Part of its work, via cultivation and craft, is to help preserve the local ecosystem so that the reedy, flexible rattan will run as rampant as the river Rhône runs deep, and the centuries-old craft of a region exists for centuries to come. ateliervime.com

here are very few places on Earth where one immediately feels a sense of wonder from exposure to the natural landscape. The Retreat at Blue Lagoon is one such place. Located 45 minutes from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, on Reykjanes Peninsula— designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015—the Retreat opened its doors in 2018 and consists of a subterranean spa, geothermal lagoon, restaurant focusing on Iceland’s culinary traditions, and a 62-suite hotel. Designed by Sigríður Sigþórsdóttir, the founder and lead architect of Basalt Architects who spent time exploring the lava fields before determining the best site, the project aims to highlight the fascinating landscape and the revitalizing powers of geothermal seawater, renowned for its healing and rejuvenating properties. One of the main challenges for Sigþórsdóttir was adapting the construction process to the way lava unexpectedly behaves, and to fuse building and geology. In this paradise of relaxation and exploration, equal emphasis is placed on taking care of the mind, body and spirit, while the interplay of architecture, design and geothermal seawater is omnipresent. In the lobby of the Retreat, the lounge’s wood-burning fireplace gives life to a cozy atmosphere and wall-to-wall glass invites guests to admire the sublime surroundings. In the library, the view is also the main protagonist, while the gallery showcases a selection of ceramics. Part of a 1,600-piece collection from the Icelandic Museum of Design and Applied Art, the ceramics are by artists such as Ragnar Kjartansson, Kogga, Dieter Roth and Steinunn Marteinsdóttir, among others. In all the spaces where the furniture is mostly by B&B Italia (including brand classics as well as bespoke pieces exclusively designed for the Retreat), the interior design was conceived by Basalt Architects and Milan-based Design Group Italia (DGI). “What does ‘timeless sophistication’ mean?” asks Sigurdur Thorsteinsson, chief creative officer at DGI. “It means simple shapes. Each of the comfortably sized 62 suites has floorto-ceiling windows, no television (to ensure quietness) and a terrace on the lower level with views of the lava and lagoon—a 9,690-squarefoot waterscape—while offering endless perspectives on the upper floor. Through the lighting design, Liska/Verkis took a human-centric approach where both natural and artificial light aims to nourish and relax. Inspired by Iceland’s spectacular nature, artist Ragna Róbertsdóttir created several pieces for this project, such as the lava-based wall installation for Moss Restaurant and salt-based topographical “mindscapes” for the hotel’s five large suites. Accessible during four hours of the day and for guests of the hotel, the spa provides a unique experience where the human connection to the breathtaking environment seems to happen in a magical way. Daily yoga sessions, guided hikes and a seven-course gourmet journey are also available. rriving at MIL is quite an adventure. Located 11,500 feet above sea level, this restaurant created by Peruvian chef Virgilio Martínez—who also helms Lima’s famous Central Restaurante—provides much more than a gastronomic experience. It also offers the opportunity to dive into the culture of the region through a menu consisting of eight “moments” that reflect eight high-altitude ecosystems. All the dishes are made exclusively with local ingredients (many grown on-site) such as roots, native potatoes and different types of corn honoring the farm-to-table concept and taking Peruvian cuisine to new heights. Among the highlights from the menu, which changes according to the season, Andes Central is an interpretation of a traditional culinary technique from the Peruvian Andes consisting of slow-roasting root vegetables in a huatia, or traditional oven made of mud, while Diversity of Corn includes different native varieties including white corn, chullpi and piscoronto, combined with cheese. Beyond the food, MIL’s location is also truly unique. Situated in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, the restaurant is on the edge of the Moray archaeological complex, which is characterized by its concentric, stepped paths and is known for having served as an agricultural research center several centuries ago. “This enormous coliseum is composed of circular terraces supposedly designed to generate different microclimates,” says the MIL team. “It is said that this big piece of Inca architecture and engineering was an important center of agricultural experimentation.”

Occupying a rustic building with a square-shaped plan, a central stone courtyard with trees, an inner garden and a roof covered in woven ichu grass, the project comprises four wings. One is home to the restaurant, which features windows overlooking to the sublime landscape, helping to connect the interior with the exterior. The three others are dedicated to research projects led by the chef. “The entrance stairway to the restaurant was designed with blocks of stone worked by local artisans,” says the team

of Estudio Rafael Freyre. “The steps in the stairway gradually become small terraces where native plants are cultivated. This way, we created a small transition space whose lytic materiality and graduated shape connect the archaeological area and MIL. (…) We think it is paramount for architecture to tie into the local communities and bring continuity to the historical legacy of their traditions. After remodeling the building, originally designed by architects Óscar Borasino and Ruth Alvarado, the restaurant merges into Moray’s natural, cultural and social setting organically and respectfully.” Traditional materials from the Andes and artisanal techniques such as local earth, fibers, minerals, stone carving and finishes in adobe and colored clays were used throughout. “The first step was to harken back to these construction techniques and get to know them in-depth,” the Estudio Rafael Freyre team explains. “We sought to recover them in order to reinterpret and integrate them with contemporary technologies and processes, allowing us to develop and reinvent them. We believe in a close relationship between the materials, climate, altitude, history and artisanal traditions of each place.” With a capacity of 20 diners and only open for lunch, MIL was created with the objective of respecting the surrounding nature. It also involves the local communities (of Kacllaraccay and Mullaka’sMisminay) who participate into the project as they work on the MIL’s lands and receive half of the harvest. Cacao, coffee and liquors are also produced here.

Given all that is offered, it took 10 years to bring this project to life, following an approach that combines anthropological aspects, gastronomy, the landscape and science in order to both respect and reflect the fascinating place where MIL sits. Through his passionate approach to food and experimentation in his laboratory, Martínez strives to connect with people, nature and the Andean world. hat sterling Hollywood icon John Wayne was larger than life, but not larger than his own largesse. Wayne was known for working hard but was less celebrated for his soft spot for helping others. Generosity did not make Wayne famous; it made him something far more significant—human. In the movies Wayne battled outlaws in lawless lands and enemies on foreign shores, but in life he waged a 15-year war against cancer, first of the lungs and then of the stomach, succumbing to the disease in 1979. In typical Wayne fashion, he did not go down without a fight. Decades later, he’s still in the trenches, speaking more of the man than the myth. “Often the character of the man reflected in his movies was a mirror of the man

himself,” says Stacy Mulder, vice president of the John Wayne Cancer Foundation (JWCF), whose offices are in Newport Beach. “He was a loving dad, dedicated friend, community leader and allaround pillar in society. He had a heart for the people and a strong faith in doing what’s right.” These values are the ballast of JWCF, which was formed from Wayne’s desire for his family to leverage his name in the fight against cancer to save the lives of others through funding cuttingedge research and new life-saving treatment protocols. Under the oversight and auspices of the Wayne family, JWCF raises awareness and funds for programs created to improve cancer patients’ outcomes and save lives through research, education, awareness and support.

This includes the foundation-funded Block the Blaze skin cancer education and awareness program that has educated over 465,000 youths in 16 states (including nearly 25,000 California junior lifeguards last year alone) and, most recently, the John Wayne Grit Series. Named for the attribute Wayne had in spades, these 10K and half-marathon runs take place in John Wayne movie locales including Lone Pine, California and Ridgway, Colorado. Foundational to its mission is the John Wayne Cancer Institute, which was formed in 1981 and is now located at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica. Through the cutting-edge facility, “More than 170 Alumni Fellows of the John Wayne Cancer Institute are now doing research and treatment across the country,” says Mulder. Its signature one-two punch—renowned research and advanced technologies applied to the development of life-saving cancer treatments, including Sentinel Node Biopsy—is helping revolutionize cancer treatment worldwide. A new year ahead brings more opportunities for the JWCF to further its work. All because Marion Morrison, born in a small town in Iowa, came to California and used his fame to launch a mission to touch others across the world. Sounds like a plot straight out of Hollywood, and perhaps were the protagonist anyone other than Wayne, that’s all it might have been. But, Mulder notes, “John Wayne put just as much emphasis on things that were important to him personally as he did to things on the screen.
