T
he view from here is one of the pleasures of living in a coastal community. For most of the homes we represent, this means either a pool or the Pacific. But in the case of the residence on the cover of this issue, 11 Pelican Vista in Newport Coast, it means both. The only thing to compete with the view from the house is the one within it. But that ocean view is really quite something, as is the ocean itself—reassurance and a refuge, it’s something we all cherish. Please take time to read about Oceana, the international organization that advocates for the health and protection of our world’s oceans, and its SeaChange Summer Party, a fundraiser held in Laguna Beach to support the cause. We can’t consider the ocean without also recognizing what a wave of success it has been for M|W|A Associates. We’ve broken sales records on Lido Island, selling 820 Via Lido Nord for the highest price per square foot to date, and 26 Harbor Island in what marks the highest public sale in Newport Beach in the last eight years. Ranked #1 in per agent sales volume, #2 in Orange County sales volume, and #14 in volume in the nation by the Wall Street Journal, the accolades and efforts we’ve received are a testament to our team’s expansion into different coastal markets and acquisition of the strongest veteran agents in those territories. Find all our listings—maybe even one you can’t live without—in The Address Book. For inspiration, indulge our profiles of photographer Paulette Tavormina and Dutch designer Marcel Wanders, along with two other pictures of beauty, a Napa Valley inn and a hotel in Paris—you’ll have to hop an ocean to get there, of course, but do enjoy the view.
All the best,
and

OBJETS D’A RT Fine-art photographer Paulette Tavormina’s modern still-life milieus reimagine the wild and imaginative magic of the Dutch masters Words by Jenn Thornton
Photographs courtesy of Paulette Tavormina
ART | Paulette Tavormina
For Paulette Tavormina, perfection is in the imperfection— an old birdcage and a strand of pearls, a map and an eyeglass, flora and ephemera from the Paris Flea Market. With the precision of a symphony conductor, the acclaimed photographer channels the Old Masters, artfully arranging these or similar components in vivid re-creations of historical references that she captures with the click of her camera.
Tavormina’s infatuation with these figures only deepened; enough museums trips and she was sidelining, photographing art for catalogs at Sotheby’s and spending weekends reinterpreting the work she loved. “It was an idea, a dream that had actually been percolating for about 20 years,” she notes. Why the Dutch? “The color, the lighting,” she offers, “and because I love the simplicity of bread and a jug of wine, the pictures of everyday life.” Passionate in this pursuit, “I just kept on going,” she adds. Today Tavormina enjoys a rather coveted spot at the top. “It is amazing,” she concedes, considering the course that has brought her full-circle. “From working at Sotheby’s in the 1970s, when it was a much simpler place, to being part of its auctions” to authoring her eponymous tome Paulette Tavormina: Seizing Beauty. “I just really have to pinch myself.” Currently finishing her Trompe L’oiel series, which received a rapturous reception in Madrid, and giving thought to a forthcoming series with birds, Tavormina is always in search of a new reference, but need not look far for inspiration—her Manhattan apartment is filled with found treasures. “It is where I live and work,” she says lovingly. “I have all of my props around me; my butterfly collection, my shell collection, morning glories on the windowsill.” The very picture of beauty. paulettetavormina.com

PHOTO (THIS PAGE) BY BETSY PINOVER SCHIFF (PORTR AIT)
These painterly compositions are, like the portrait of the lady herself, fascinating—a bit here and a bit there. A lover of art history, Tavormina’s time at a Boston antique store led her to discover Sotheby’s New York, where she took “her first real job” in the president’s office. Little did she imagine that, years later, she would be not only be photographing for the famed house, but see her work be part of its auctions in New York and Paris, and shown at galleries from London to Madrid. Sotheby’s was a formative if unofficial art school for Tavormina who was similarly edified by evening courses at NYU and years in Santa Fe, where she got a crash course on research and authenticity while making props for a number of Hollywood films—including the handwritten resignation letter and all other papers for Nixon. Then, in being introduced to the female painters of the Renaissance, Tavormina was “gobsmacked,” she says, absolutely “enamored with the Old Masters.”

lessi, B&B Italia, Bisazza, Cappellini, Christofle, Flos, Poliform and Swarovski, among many others—all big furniture brands want Marcel Wanders because they know that collaborating with the Dutch designer guarantees success. He, it seems, has found the magic formula that continually proves him inimitable. The designer is a prolific creative mind, expressing his talent through a vast array of products and projects (whether commercial or residential). Across this diversity, however, some ever-present elements emerge: the will to innovate and be immediately recognizable and authentic, and the ability to amaze and reflect a sense of humor. “Everything has already been done,” he says. “It’s not possible to create something totally ‘new’—something that was never seen before—but we can create new combinations.”

DESIGN | Marcel Wanders
S
ince opening his product and interior design studio in 1996, Wanders has designed over 1,900 projects with a multidisciplinary team from all over the world. Some of his pieces are included in the most renowned museums across the globe, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, MoMA in New York City and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Advocating for more romantic and humanistic design thinking, he strives to develop a personal language that catalyzed an era he calls “the Contemporary Renaissance of Humanism.” With a straightforward motto, the designer is “here to create an environment of love, live with passion and make our most exciting dreams come true.” In addition to his own studio and to satisfy his creativity, Wanders launched the design company MOOOI in 2001 with co-founder Casper Vissers. “When we started MOOOI, we promised each other it would become a legendary brand,” he says. “No one can create a legendary brand by doing ‘me-too’ products or branding. For that reason, we have developed our own fresh approach to product and style.” Today, MOOOI is a worldwide reference thanks to products designed by Wanders and other great talents such as Maarten Baas, Nika Zupanc, Studio Job and Jasper Morrison, to name a few. Meaning “beauty” in Dutch but written with an extra “O”—to imply an extra dose of beauty— the daring, playful, inventive, eclectic and refined style of MOOOI is based on the idea that design is a matter of love. Among Wanders’ latest interior design projects is Grand Portals Nous, a five-star hotel located on a magnificent beach in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, where openness and transparency, as well as craft and tactile design are key. The secret garden, pool, 98-foot water cascade and spa are must-sees. In Ecuador, Oh, Quito—created by the Dutchman & YOO in collaboration with Uribe & Schwarzkopf—is a nature-inspired residential project set in an exclusive urban neighborhood. In addition to the two towers with 102 apartments, it includes extensive public entertaining areas with a multi-purpose sports court, teen area and kids’ club, outdoor cinema on the 21st floor, sunset lounge, communal terrace, yoga deck and more, creating a sense of belonging and community. But his most spectacular recent project is a luxury hotel in Qatar—his first one in the Middle East—that opened its doors in October 2017. Nestled in an iconic building designed by SWA Architects and shaped like a falcon to reference the national bird, Mondrian Doha invites guests to discover a fantasy world. In the lobby, an enormous gold leaf bell and crystal chandelier set the tone. In the lounge, a surreal forest with a “Tree of Life” continues the journey to the atrium where a four-level spiral staircase acts as the focal point. “To create the hotel, we studied the city and the people,” the designer says. “We don’t create interior spaces; we create destinations.” Mosaics, video art, references to Arabic writing and historic souks (markets) are some of the many surprises of Mondrian Doha. “We mixed the local culture with the aesthetic of modern design,” he adds. “Every space tells its own story, so guests live a lot of different experiences.” Continuing with the inspiration from One Thousand and One Nights, the hotel’s 270 rooms feature Swarovski crystal chandeliers and made-to-measure furniture with tones that evoke the desert. Public and private, all spaces are an ode to Arab culture through a contemporary eye.
The daring, playful, inventive, eclectic and refined style of MOOOI is based on the idea that design is a matter of love.
Combining the unexpected and creating a new, poetic vision, embellishing living environments and bringing humanity back into design are at the heart of Wanders’ design philosophy. Day after day, he works to make dreams come true. marcelwanders.com

R E V I VA L A Napa Valley family with an emerging luxury brand and roots in the old world transforms a landmark home into an exquisitely styled luxury inn for the new Words by Jenn Thornton
Photographs courtesy of The Ink House
HERITAGE | The Ink House

O
n the outskirts of St. Helena in the heart of Napa Valley, the historic Ink House stands sentry to all it surrounds: well-ordered vineyards, rolling mountains and unobstructed horizon. This immersive scene makes it difficult to picture the landscape as the rough, unsettled country it once was. And while the view is beautiful, it’s the vision that one remembers— the vision that brought Ink House founder Theron Ink from the middle of the country out West, where in California he found fame and fortune as a celebrated agriculturist, his legacy as a Napa Valley pioneer as firmly rooted as the area’s age-old grapevines. Built in 1885 on Helios Ranch, the two-story Italianate was the Ink family home. The property later served as a bed and breakfast and as the adopted home of Elvis Presley, who bunked here during the filming of Wild in the Country. None of these incarnations, however, were as sophisticatedly nuanced or attuned to the building’s inspired heritage. Achieving this, ironically, would take the efforts and vision of yet another prominent Napa Valley family, the Castelluccis. A close family with all members involved in its business, the Castelluccis trace their ancestry to Italy where, generations ago, their forebear Luigi Castellucci made wine in his basement in Calabria. Today the family grows grapes on Spring Mountain and, in 2012, embarked on bottling its own wines, an essential part of its burgeoning lifestyle brand based on Italian family tradition—an intersection of old world warmth and new world luxury. In requisitioning and lovingly restoring the Ink House, Castellucci siblings Marco and Maria have cultivated an intoxicating hospitality experience in keeping with this ethos. Vibrantly redesigned, the Ink House’s rich history is keenly felt but subtly expressed in masculine lines and luxury touches wrapped in a modern elegance that complements what is an obvious sense of establishment. Each of the inn’s four rooms have been reimagined in the spirit of their original and adopted occupants (one is a tasteful tribute to Elvis Presley, another operates as an almost private residence, with a private portico) and there is an unfussy autonomy about the place as one moves freely and easily from the lovely living area, to the lustrous kitchen, to the observatory (a cozy glass chrysalis on the third floor). The kitchen is open and well stocked to satisfy the sudden urge to grab a snack or a glass or wine (like the luscious Lucia, a supremely refreshing white from the Castellucci collection), or perhaps prepare an impromptu picnic. Outside, the grounds are meticulous, with a tidy lawn and gravel walkways, a vined pergola, perfectly placed fountains and restorative lounge areas. The contemporary arrangement is juxtaposed with the ranch’s massive original barn, a study in architectural character that looms over all, and a remnant from earlier days. That the tension of old and new is so thoughtful, so tone appropriate, is a credit to the sensitivity brought to the project, which is best described as a broad consideration of high-end hospitality within a modern wine-country context—casually elegant, experiential, and responsive to contemporary expectations. The air is pleasantly void of pretense, and yet, should one wish to summon the house car (a Bentley) or curate a special experience, they need but ask their personal Maître d’étage, unless he has already extended the offer, such is the effortlessness at Ink House—a place that, like the finest wine, has been aged to perfection. inkhousenapavalley.com, castelluccinapavalley.com

PA R ISI A N ICON After a four-year renovation, prestigious Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel recently reopened its doors, combining history and modernity in a subtle way Words by Karine Monié Photographs courtesy of Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel

ne side of Paris’s majestic Place de la Concorde, a building built in 1758—originally designed by architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel at the request of King Louis XV—continues to capture the world’s attention. The emblematic Hôtel de Crillon, which features a neoclassical-style façade adorned with sculptures by Nicolas Coustou and Corinthian columns, was the residence of the Count de Crillon and his family for years and was also frequented by Marie Antoinette for piano lessons before becoming a hotel in 1909. Since then, kings, aristocrats, presidents, and icons of film, fashion and art—including Charlie Chaplin, Andy Warhol, Meryl Streep and Madonna—stayed in the palace. After being acquired by a member of the Saudi royal family in 2010, the 18th-century property went through a complete transformation, the objective of which was to preserve its legacy while injecting contemporary touches. Architect Richard Martinet restored the landmark façade and grand reception rooms on the second floor—which are classified heritage landmarks—and landscape architect Louis Benech shaped Hôtel de Crillon’s whimsical courtyards. But one woman was the velvet hand behind one of the most impressive and extensive hotel renovations in Paris. For four years, interior architect and artistic director Aline Asmar d’Amman skillfully orchestrated this massive project. Born in Lebanon in the 1970s, d’Amman spent her youth fascinated by art and literature—thanks mostly to her Francophile mother—in a context and time when constant changes and war were prevalent. Seeing demolitions in her country forged her aesthetic preference for theatrical settings and convinced her to use architecture as a way to rebuild and, in a certain way, be a means of rebirth. In 2011, d’Amman founded her studio Culture in Architecture, in Beirut and Paris, with a clear idea in mind: to follow, as she puts it, “the deep belief in the power of Mouldings and beauty to elevate the soul and provoke addictive memories of places, in the fields of architecture, interiors, furniture design and artistic direction.”

Discreet yet extremely talented, d’Amman has never clamored for the clean lines and spotlight. However, the exquisiteness of Hôtel de Crillon attracted a lot of attention. Instead of doing everything solely with her team, which noble materials, designed the hotel’s historic salons and three suites, d’Amman called on the skills of four other designers, who helmed specific spaces: Tristan Auer was tasked with the reception area and lobby, Brasserie d’Aumont where the (led by chef Justin Schmitt), Cour Gabriel and Cour d’Honneur, and mix of heritage and the Gentlemen’s Grooming Salon; Chahan Minassian was responsible for the 60-seat bar Les Ambassadeurs, Jardin d’Hiver, one Michelin-star innovation, and restaurant L’Ecrin (with the creative dishes of young chef Christopher Hache), the swimming pool, the Rosewood Spa Sense and suites; Cyril in timeless elegance. Vergniol drove the design of the corridors and 124 guestrooms; and design titan Karl Lagerfeld decorated two suites, together called Les Grands Appartements. Convincing fashion guru Lagerfeld—whom she chose because of his broad knowledge of the 18th century—required a dose of audacity, considering d’Amman had never met him. “I needed to find a way to catch his attention, so I decided to do something that was really true to me, something authentic,” she says. “I made him a handwritten letter and brought it in person to his boutique in Paris.” Twenty-hours later, d’Amman received a call from Lagerfeld. “He told me he found my approach elegant and quite original, as no one today sends hand-written letters anymore,” she smiles.

-Aline Asmar d’Amman
Like a music conductor, d’Amman coordinated everything with precision, a listening ear and strong artistic direction. After hard work by everyone involved in the project, including some of the best French contemporary artists (such as Laurent Grasso, Jules de Balincourt, Claire Adelfang, Laurence Amelie and Ubaldo Franceschini) as well as exceptional craftsmen and female artisans (including Ingrid Donat, Zoe Ouvrier, Marie Khouri, Victoria Wilmotte, Marie-France de Crécy and Lauren Collin), Hôtel de Crillon reopened in July 2017. Mouldings and ornaments combined with clean lines and noble materials create a luxurious atmosphere where the mix of heritage and innovation, and raw and precious, results in timeless elegance. The sophisticated interior spaces pay tribute to Paris and the French art de vivre. A bridge between the 18th and 21st century, Hôtel de Crillon reflects the perfect balance between conservation and transformation. And the magic continues.

ERIC NEFF
23 Avalon Vista, Pelican Crest “We felt very fortunate to have Eric’s perseverance and guidance throughout our search for a local move. As we were in no hurry, and did not have specific requirements, it took great Realtor patience to maneuver us through the search. Eric proved his professionalism as he presented numerous options based on our evolving likes and dislikes over many months. Eric is always cheerful and encouraging with his market knowledge which enabled us to finally reach our home search goal. Eric was beyond helpful to us in the closing. Due to him efficiently providing all asked for information as well as contributing a wealth of knowledge helped us have a smooth efficient closing. Eric’s outgoing personality, experience and honest approach makes an ordinarily stressful time pleasant and enjoyable. We have since recommended MWA to friends and hope our great experience with Eric and his awesome team, Rex and Marcy, results in many more happy clients.” -John & Carolyn Young
MARC Y WEINSTEIN & REX MCKOWN
28 Fairway Point, Pelican Hill
“We have had the privilege and honor to have known Marcy and Rex for 17 years. We moved
to Newport Coast in 2001 from Palos Verdes Estates and were very fortunate to meet Marcy Weinstein, who is hands down the very best real estate agent in the area. We have bought and sold 4 homes in Pelican Hill, Pelican Crest and Crystal Cove areas. We also rented a beach house in Laguna Beach and a rental home in Pelican Hill. Marcy and Rex have represented us in all these transactions. We have been good and friends over the last 17 years and have found Marcy and Rex to be most thoughtful, caring and professional.
We put our trust in them and they came through with very satisfactory outcomes. They always look for a win-win scenario, where everyone walks away a winner. We highly recommend
Marcy and Rex to anyone looking for the best real estate representation. Their results speak for themselves. They are experts in this market and will work diligently and tirelessly to make your transaction a success.” -Lee & Myra Perlman
LENA GHEZEL
3 Midsummer, Crystal Cove Our family has been working with Lena Ghezel for years now. From our first transaction with Lena to our most recent, she some how manages to continue to exceed our expectations as she is always bringing something new to the table. She was always able to meet our goals and timeline, no matter how difficult they were. When selling she would always get us top dollar for our home. And when buying she’ d negotiate the best price for us, on some occasions lower than we thought possible. She really does fight for her client and keeps their best interest in mind over her own. She is not your traditional broker, she is a partner in the transaction. She helps with every single step of the process, including overseeing a construction project, handling the staging of furniture, helping her clients obtain loans, and much more. There really is no one I know that comes close to Lena when it comes to brokering, no matter how small or large the transaction. In fact, very few people are as dedicated to their job the way Lena is. I couldn’t possibly recommend her more. -The Ghaneian Family
“I have worked with McKown/Weinstein and Partners for the last 4 years. They have represented me on my last four homes. I have
found them to be very knowledgeable, professional and consider them to be an important part of my team. Since we are
primarily spec builders it is very important to have agents that have a very good overall understanding of the market. Rex, Marcy and

A
long the palm-lined bluffs of a private villa overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Laguna Beach, a gathering of about 400 guests came to honor the ocean at the annual SeaChange Summer Party (of which MWA's very own Jeff Blasingame serves as vice-chair). It was the 11th year for the award-winning event, hosted by Oceana, the largest ocean conservation MWA Q&A organization in the world. This year’s guests We caught up with Oceana Board Vice Chair Valarie were entertained by actor and emcee Ted Van Cleave, a passionate ocean advocate who co-founded Danson—a passionate supporter and Oceana the event over a decade ago, and co-chairs it to this day: board member—and treated to a performance by singer Katharine McPhee, who serenaded guests under the summer sky with evocative renditions of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “God Bless the Child” among other tunes. Kicking off with a cocktail reception and silent auction, the sold-out soirée was followed by a seated dinner and an energized live auction with items ranging from exotic excursions to French Polynesia, Africa and Aspen, to an array of luxury goods offered by Zegna, Ferragamo, Louis Vuitton and BMW—whose plug-in 530e Luxury Hybrid was as a hit. Afterwards, the gathering made its way to the post-party lounge to dance and mingle. With proceeds aimed at supporting Oceana’s local and worldwide efforts, the event raised more than $1.2 million for the cause. CEO of Oceana Andy Sharpless took to the stage to discuss the night’s theme, the protection of coral reefs—oft-referred to as the “rainforests of the sea”—and share the organization’s recent wins—a wave extending from local waters to seas as far away as Chile and the Philippines: “Oceana’s teams are winning battles that will give the corals a chance.” oceana.org
Q. Another sold out event! When you co-founded SeaChange, now in its 11th year, did you envision this? Frankly, no I did not. I guessed that the people of Orange County cared deeply for not only their local coastline, but would be interested in supporting an effective organization working to also protect the oceans around the world. And would love an epic party. They did not disappoint on either bet! Q. What got you involved—and keeps you passionate about producing this standout occasion? Working with the amazing SeaChange [t]eam to make this party happen is an opportunity to directly help fund Oceana’s meaningful victories. Everyone that supports the event with time, talent, and treasure can draw a straight line from their contributions to healthier oceans. It is really a chance for us all to be involved in something bigger than ourselves. That is powerful. Q. What was one of your favorite moments from this year’s spectacular event? I personally welcome our wonderful guests to the party upon their arrival. It is fun for me but is also very gratifying and humbling. Q. What do the funds raised this year mean for the organization’s global conservation efforts? Like any effective enterprise, Oceana needs adequate resources to carry out its restoration and protection strategies. SeaChange contributes significantly and directly to providing those needed resources. And SeaChange raises awareness—about the challenges the oceans face and about what Oceana is doing to meet those challenges head on.
