t’s the time of year when, once again, we give gratitude for what is most important. This is different for everyone, but for us, we reflect on family, the very foundation of our team—a brother and sister—and a close-knit group of friends who are wildly successful in real estate. Individually, we each have talents; but together, we are stronger, which is also true of the communities and clients that we are both thrilled and honored to serve. One such community is Crystal Cove, where the closing of 9 Del Mar—this issue’s “Final View”— is our highest priced sale in Crystal Cove history, besting only the record we set with the sale of 8 Mystique for $28 million. In Newport Beach, we also sold 26 Harbor Island for $25 million, making it the highest price public sale there in an astounding eight years. But it is one of our newer listings, 7 Pelican Vista, which commands our cover, not to mention a truly arresting view from its picturesque peninsula lot in Pelican Crest. With every amenity imaginable, this expansive estate epitomizes the finest in coastal resort living. These homes, and all other listings in our Address Book, are indicative of the unparalleled lifestyle we enjoy, but there are many interesting stories beyond our borders. This issue we present dispatches about the brilliantly reimagined restaurant Noma in Copenhagen; the stunning design campus Vitra; and the new hotel Jackalope in the heart of Australia’s wine country. Still, because home is where the heart is, Marcy recently opened her residence to host a fundraiser for Paws in Blue, an organization that supports Orange County Sheriff’s hardworking K9 unit. To all those who showed their support—and to you—we are eternally grateful.

DESIGN | Vitra Campus

What if you could spend a day in a park made up of several buildings designed by some of the most famous architects in the world? In the German city of Weil am Rhein—just across the Switzerland border and a few kilometers from Basel—this park exists. Vitra, the familyowned company to thank for this experience, broke ground in 1950. Today the company produces contemporary and design classics created by 20th century masters including Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson and Isamu Noguchi, to name a few. Developed in 1981, after a fire destroyed most of the factory buildings that existed on the site, Vitra Campus is multidimensional: it is a production site, a place of architectural experimentation, and a cultural destination for travelers. Amid a large, verdant park, each building was shaped by renowned architects and has its own aesthetic. All buildings, however, are in harmony with the natural landscape. Upon arrival here today, the nested structure of the VitraHaus by Herzog & de Meuron attracts visitors’ eyes. Spread over four floors,

Vitra’s flagship showroom hosts the brand’s home collection; placed in context to inspire, the collection is for sale. On the ground floor, the Lounge Chair Atelier enables visitors to observe a production stage of the iconic chair designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1956 and, if they wish, personalize a lounge chair with a selection of leathers, wooden shells and grains. Also designed by Herzog & de Meuron and opened in 2016, the Vitra Schaudepot, characterized by its red façade and pitched roof, hosts part of the extensive collection of the Vitra Design Museum. The museum is home to 20,000 objects, including 7,000 pieces of furniture, 1,000 lighting objects and numerous archives. More than 400 iconic pieces on display function as a historical porthole, taking viewers on a journey from 1800 to the present day. Highlights include the Ant chair (1952) by Arne Jacobsen, the Lockheed Lounge (1985/1988) by Marc Newson, and chair_ONE (1999/2004) by Konstantin Grcic. Whether on an architecture tour or a solo trip, visitors have the opportunity to discover a

heterogeneous ensemble that honors creativity in architecture and design. The Vitra Fire Station by Zaha Hadid; factory buildings by Álvaro Siza, SANAA and Nicholas Grimshaw; the Diogene living unit by Renzo Piano; the petrol station by Jean Prouvé; bus stop by Jasper Morrison and the Ring and Ruisseau by the Bouroullec brothers—among others—are some of this unique project’s many surprises. Added to one end of the park in 1993, the conference pavilion was the first design by Tadao Ando outside of Japan. Accessible via a footpath that echoes the meditation paths in Japanese monastery gardens, the pavilion features a spatial articulation where order meets balance, and a large part of its volume is concealed below grade. The restrained structure, which comprises several conference rooms, was built with great respect for the surrounding cherry trees, a detail particularly important in the architect’s culture. Both discreet and peaceful, this building celebrates the beauty of simplicity.

With its sculptural forms made of angles and curves, the white undulating exterior of the Vitra Design Museum is attention-catching, emphasizing Frank Gehry’s talent and style based on deconstructivism, an architecture movement from the 1980s. “You have to find your signature,” says Gehry. “When you find it, you’re the only expert on it. People can say they like it or don’t like it. They can argue about it, but it’s yours.” Opened in 1989, the space is now home to up to 10 temporary exhibitions a year, exploring design’s past and present, and its relationship to architecture, art and everyday culture. At the borders of Switzerland, Germany and France, this collection of eclectic, purpose-built constructions that makes up the Vitra Campus is an ode to boldness and inventiveness. Here, some of world’s most renowned architects gave free rein to their imaginations, and created a one-of-kind dialogue. Several decades after its debut, the campus continues to fascinate architecture and design lovers from all over the world. vitra.com

N E W NOM A In Copenhagen, world-renowned Noma unveiled its new face last February. Designed as an urban farm by architecture firm BIG and interior designer David Thulstrup, it combines authenticity and a Scandinavian influence.

eing at the top for an extended stretch implies excellence, but applies pressure, too. This is something the chef-owner of Noma, René Redzepi, understands all too well. For several years in a row, his two-Michelinstar establishment was named best restaurant in the world, attracting flocks of international foodies to Copenhagen despite a reservation waiting list of several months. With such huge success, resting on his laurels could have satisfied Redzepi. Instead, continually striving for perfection, he took a big risk and, in February 2017, closed the restaurant, announcing that it would reopen one year later in new facilities, in a new location, and with a new menu. On February 16, 2018, the “new” adventure began. Now located on the outskirts of Copenhagen, in an idyllic and peaceful setting in the historic Christianshavn neighborhood, the new Noma—or Noma 2.0—is a nearly 14-square-foot urban farm, which comprises 11 interconnected buildings, with the kitchen at its heart. Stronger than ever, the restaurant was designed by renowned Danish architecture firm BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) and interior designer David Thulstrup—at the helm of his eponymous studio—who worked hand-in-hand with Redzepi to transform what was a former sea mine warehouse into the new Noma campus. “The challenge of this project was combining the practical demands of a busy restaurant, which requires materials that can handle a lot of wear and tear, whilst also being something that can only be experienced in that corner of Copenhagen, forever,” says Redzepi. In addition to the 2,200-square-foot garden by landscape gardener Piet Oudolf, the project has three independent greenhouses, where chef Redzepi can now grow his own products. A test kitchen, an open kitchen, a lounge, rooms for meat, fish and fermentation, two dining areas and staff quarters are part of the facilities. “Although these are new premises, it feels like the restaurant has been here for a long time,” says the chef.

S

tarting again, rethinking everything, inevitably implied a new twist in terms of cuisine. The year is now divided into three seasons, during which the menu changes to match the type of ingredients that are available at different times of the year. From February to the end of May, Scandinavian seafood is celebrated; from early summer to early fall, vegetables are menu stars; and from early fall to January, meat and ingredients that grow in the forest—such as berries, mushrooms, nuts, and wild plants—take center stage. In charge of shaping the chef ’s vision through the interior spaces, Thulstrup drew inspiration from the world of residential design, as one of the objectives was to convey a sense of place and a feeling of being at home. “Where in the world are we? The interiors had to reflect that,” explains Redzepi. “At the same time, each piece and each setting needed to be carefully selected so that everything was bespoke.” Adds Thulstrup: “A keyword for René was liveable, so we created honest, simple and modern spaces that are not over-designed.” Also at the heart of the concept was reflecting the new Noma’s immediate environment while taking into account the restaurant’s practical requirements. Thus, Thulstrup echoes the principle developed by BIG architects, which is that each building has a sole function and is made of a single material (wood or brick, for instance) chosen for its specific purpose. “The material is the decoration,” says Thulstrup, who took great care in choosing all the little details and finishing. He designed bespoke furniture, lighting, cabinetry, and asked artists to create artworks especially for this magical venue.

AC Noma

As in Noma’s previous iteration, the restaurant’s main dining room—with walls that look like stacks of wood and a central counter made of a 200-year-old naturally blackened beam found in the harbor nearby—continues to be intimate with a capacity of only 42 people per night. Featuring beams clad in white oiled Douglas fir, a private room—adjacent to the dining room— seats between eight and 16. In the lounge area, meanwhile, custom-made cream brick on the walls and floor are reminiscent of the clean and modern lines of 70’s Danish style. Bathed in natural light, the restaurant’s predominantly soft tones create an intimate atmosphere, while natural materials such as stone highlight the authentic character of the place. Designed to be like home, the spaces elegantly and discretely embody the restaurant’s 15year history while looking towards the future. “It’s a mixture of old and new. The idea was to reflect the restaurant’s heritage, but not from a nostalgic point of view,” says Thulstrup. “[The result] is very Scandinavian, but without any of the clichés of Nordic design. I looked to all eras, particularly less-explored furniture and art references. Everything is carefully selected, curated or designed and nothing screams more than the other. The whole thing has this sense of coherence and a 360-degree, holistic approach.” For Redzepi, “The end result is more than I expected,” he concludes. “Even though it’s a brand new space, it feels like it has been there for a while. It is a space that immediately settles you as you enter, yet it is unfamiliar once you start looking around.” Innovative and ambitious, Noma 2.0 is starting a new, exciting chapter. noma.dk

ven those who have never been to Australia know of its ease, a character that one sees in its people, its manner, its air. One of the world’s most famously congenial places, it is also astonishingly beautiful, a country widely praised for its competing landscapes. One of these playgrounds is the Mornington Peninsula, where the natural environment is lush with vineyards, orchards and market gardens. Here the setting reaches, if not the actuality of a pinnacle, then something quite near it. This sunny Napa Valley for Melbournians is framed by two spectacular shorelines—one calm the other rugged—and defined by its delicious food and drink, with more than 50 cellars on the doorstep of the surprising newcomer Jackalope. Let any visions of a mythical creature from folklore fade so that the reality of Jackalope comes into focus, because this you want to see. The bold hotel conceived in partnership with architectural firm Carr Design Group, and the debut property of the emerging Jackalope Hotels’ brand, is located in quite possibly the last place one would think to look for it: on land dating back to the Edwardian era. What was then a hardscrabble parcel for grazing gave rise to a red-bricked homestead built in 1876 that served as a humble four-bedroom abode for more than a century. But how times do change, and, with the right architect at the helm, just brilliantly. Newly built on the same land, which is now the private Willow Creek Vineyard, the contemporary, monolithic, two-story Jackalope is a study in designer design, with 45 sumptuously done rooms featuring private terraces (with deep soak tubs optional, although we’d say mandatory), two significant suites and an infinity pool overlooking rows of well-ordered vines. Here, form and fashion, a clean posture and cosmopolitan colors, converge—again with ease. “The intention was to create a bold, surreal and contemporary The hotel embodies not only the soul property—one that would not be expected in a rural setting,” explains Tracy Atherton, group of the immediate landscape, but the general manager of Jackalope Hotels. “It was whole of its homeland, extending the warm, essential for Jackalope to tie in with the desire to full-hearted handshake of Australian hospitality present a luxury offering, but not in a form that one may have not experienced before.”

Wanderlust Jackalope

Let’s just assume you haven’t. While standing in stark contrast to the vinous vernacular, the hotel embodies not only the soul of the immediate landscape, but the whole of its homeland, extending the warm, full-hearted handshake of Australian hospitality—the very reason one consents to spending some 15 hours in the air to Melbourne, then driving the one hour beyond it to reach Jackalope—jet lag be damned. It’s nothing that a glass of wine won’t remedy anyway, and there’s plenty of that here. Jackalope owns Willow Creek Vineyard, which has, under winemaker Geraldine McFaul, matured into a premier producer of elegant single vineyard wines, from pinot noir to sauvignon blanc. And in these parts, where one trips over artisan producers in their sleep, that’s saying something. “We express our winemaking roots throughout the guest experience,” says Atherton. “From the obvious, like a glass of estate wine on arrival, to subtle storytelling, like our bath soaks made in collaboration with Hunter LAB, that comprises pinot noir grape skins and seeds off our vineyard. It’s a luxury, but it’s authentic and in the spirit of our surrounds. We try to express the essence of Australian hospitality through humble, unpretentious service, and the championing of local and regional produce.”

Every piece of art in the hotel plays an integral role in guiding guests through the hotel’s narrative of ‘alchemy.’ -Tracy Atherton

Wanderlust Jackalope

With Mornington Peninsula is a place for serious foodies, Jackalope is doing its part to elevate that reputation with an immersive food and drink program of its own. Cocktail bar Flaggerdoot is set in the property’s old homestead but redone with a chic, contemporary sensibility where herringbone floors and open fires fuse with edgy installations and a one-off electric-blue pool table. These touches (including installations courtesy of international icon Rick Owens) complement a creative cocktail menu featuring a mÊlange of classic and in-house concoctions. Doot Doot Doot is a fine-dining concept, with refined a more apt description of the space itself. The eatery is top-to-bottom tantalizing, from its sparkling setting to its fresh, flavor-driven selections, pure and botanically inspired, with limited-release wine to wash it all down. Rare Hare, meanwhile, is the winery restaurant, where season shapes a robust menu. One is drawn off property (not easily, mind you) by the prospect of what waits in the Mornington Peninsula, where coast and country come together to form a recreation-rich environment. Should one

bypass an in-room massage, oil-infused soak in a Japanese bath, or rejuvenating swim at Jackalope, there is plenty of which to partake in the Peninsula. Outstanding food and drink notwithstanding, the area is a draw for top golf; courses carved out of the landscape feature fairways amid glistening ocean and outstretched horizon. From sheltered bays and pounding surf, to diving, fishing and standup paddle boarding, adventures from many quarters call. Returning to Jackalope is always an arrival. This is in large part due to a cornerstone of Jackalope—art. Standing as a sentinel to the place is a monumental black aluminum sculpture that casts a large shadow over the hotel’s forecourt. Its presence joins an array of other artworks, all thoughtfully curated to complement the overall aesthetic. “Every piece of art in the hotel plays an integral role in guiding guests through the hotel’s narrative of ‘alchemy,’” shares Atherton. One looks around in honest assessment and can only agree. It is absolute magic. jackalopehotels.com

The main level consists of a grand living/dining salon with a towering ceiling; a gourmet kitchen and morning room that open to a massive great room with panoramic views; a gracious guest suite, office/library, second kitchen, sizable butler’s pantry and teen room. The upper level offers an expansive master suite with dual baths and closets; three additional bedroom suites; and a secondary laundry room. The subterranean level includes a large entertainment space with bar and wine cellar; home theater; gym; nanny/housekeeping suite; large primary laundry room; and eight-car garage. Outside, the loggia overlooks a beautiful pool, spa and cabana, and features spectacular ocean, harbor, Catalina Island, city lights, sunsets and other coastal views all the way to Palos Verdes.

PHILANTHROPY

Gone to the Dogs Words by Jenn Thornton

S

upporting local law enforcement is a passion for the civic-minded Pamela Roossin, a custom jeweler by profession but a commissioner with the Orange County Advisory Council by avocation. In the latter role she has come to recognize the county’s K-9 officers as the “unsung heroes” of our community. So on Oct. 27, Roossin and Marcy Weinstein, both devoted dog lovers, welcomed 200 guests—including K-9 officers and their handlers—to the first Paws in Blue fundraiser at Weinstein’s home.

Philanthropy

The gorgeously adorned event was truly a breed apart, featuring large-scale floral installations; gourmet food and drink; a K-9 demo and photo ops; and a rousing performance by SoCal superband The Jacks. The event’s call to auction proved particularly enticing. The live auction caused a bidding war for luxuries including millionaire suit packages from Hong Kong Tailors and a spur-of-the-moment donation from Undersherriff Don Barnes that he dubbed a “Shootout With the Sherriff.” At one point, remembers Roossin, “The back and forth bidding for a diamond necklace was so high, I had to give a time out!” Not to be outdone, the silent auction presented everything from theater tickets, dinners and portraits to fine jewelry, just in time for holiday shopping. “You name it, we had it,” shares Roossin. The extensive planning paid off—well into six-figures territory. “Pretty impressive,” says Roossin. “Way more than I thought! There were no egos—it was all about the dogs. Everyone was there for the cause. They did what they could do for Orange County.”

MWA Q&A with Paws in Blue’s Pamela Roossin Talk about the role that K-9s plays in our community. The K-9 unit has a special piece of my heart. K-9 officers are the first line of defense for police officers that put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe.

Philanthropy

What inspired this fundraiser? We have four K-9s in our unit that need to retire and no money to replace them. It costs between $16,000 to $17,000 for the dog, the training, and the handler, because the Orange County Sherriff’s Department uses the very best. Our dogs go out on calls all the time. It’s our dogs at the airport, our dogs at bomb scares. They are brave heroes and deserve to retire when it’s time. Where will the funds go? There is not enough money to meet the need—the training, the armor. Our dogs train on a horrible dirt field. When it rains, they can’t train. Everything gets dirty. So we need artificial turf for the dogs. I’ve got a lot of aspirations! Will there be a second Paws in Blue fundraiser? I was going to say no, because it’s so much work, but it was the most fun. Marcy and I wanted to have a super-fun party where everyone would want to come and learn about our passion and the cause. We had the most beautiful cross-section of people. The vibe was just so special. I had the time of my life. It was the best night.
