Happy 115 Birthday Miami th

The Magic City turned 115 years young, and main representatives of the City of Miami were joined forces again to prepare for the annual revelry, a day full of celebration, history and fun for the whole family. Every year, 100% of the proceeds go towards funding a local worthy cause and this year’s goal was

be collecting funds for Bike Miami Days 2012, featuring a monthly Bike Miami Day from January – April 2012. The City of Miami was incorporated in July 28, 1896 and is one of the few municipalities in the nation founded by women, William and

Mary Brickell, and Julia Tuttle, known as the Mother of Miami. Last Sunday, July 24, Miami’s Anniversary celebration began with a Bike Miami Days event, and cyclists could choose to participate in the Full Route. Children had lots of fun too with arts and crafts, face painting, balloons and prizes,at

the Mary Brickell Village Oceannaire Courtyard. The Sunday Market, with arts and crafts, plants, jewelry, candles and artisanal and baked goods extended there hours in honor of Miami’s birthday, until 8pm. Complimentary tours of the Brickell area were available hosted by the Urban Tour Host .

For the Love of Art By Kimberly Carrero

A

dot is more than just a miniscule detail on top of an “i” or a period at the end of a sentence. To Katherine Wilson, a seventeen year old aspiring artist, it is a tool to create a masterpiece. Stippling is a form of art that consists of making a picture out of dots. This procedure is time consuming and very tedious; patience is definitely a virtue in this case. Her love of art started at a young age and continued to grow throughout the years. Her mother, Rachel Wilson, is at fault for this because every Christmas she would buy her daughter a sketchbook or notepad. As a youngster she obviously wanted to get new toys and dolls at that age but once she started elementary school she began to appreciate art. Dinosaurs and fairies were her favorite things to draw at that time and her talents blossomed into what it is now. At

first, she dreamed of becoming a professional tattoo artist but recently she came to terms with the fact that her heart wasn’t really into it. She found out that she truly desires to manage a gallery of her own. Katherine insisted me to call her by Kay while I interviewed her, she demonstrated a down to earth personality. Just by looking at her, you can see how she expresses her unique individuality by having a distinct fashion sense and hair style. With feathers in her ebony hair, wearing an owl tee and some skinnies, Kay lets me enter her visionary and aesthetic mind. Q & A’s:

really hope I get accepted. Do you have titles for any of your work? They’re untitled for now.

You’re 17, so you’re graduating soon. Any schools in mind? My dream school is the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota. I can remember the commercials they would advertise on T.V when I was kid perfectly. Ever since then, I just knew I had to go there. I’ve been working hard and I

Who are your favorite artists? When I was younger I went through a fairy phase and I really liked Amy Brown’s style. Later on, I discovered Salvador Dali. He’s freakin’ awesome. M.C Escher is a real great illusionist and one of my pieces was inspired by one of his.

What mediums do you usually use to draw? In order from most favorite to least favorite: Ink, Graphite Pencil, Charcoal, Colored Pencils, Paint That’s interesting, I would find pencil easier because you can erase any mistakes. I like ink because it is more permanent. I prefer black & white over color for some reason.

Dali is pretty awesome, are you a fan of surreal art? Yes! I love surreal art. What does art mean to you, exactly? Art is my gateway to let go of all my emotions I’ve been holding in and it feels very liberating. It’s like a stress reliever. People usually punch something when they’re angry, I don’t. When I’m angry I don’t destroy things, I make things. Why should people know about your artwork? What makes you different from other artists? Pieces of art are like fingerprints, each one is different and unique. They can tell you who a person is or how they interpret their feelings. My art is different and should be known about because I want people to understand how I see things and how playful my imagination can be, it’s my own and can’t be duplicated. Just like a fingerprint, it’s my identity.

WHAT THE ? by Stephanie Carrero Okay you know you seen it in the streets of Miami and on uploaded pics on your Facebook homepage and you’re wondering what is all this hype about?! Yes I am talking about the infamous planking global trend. It is all over place Tumblr, MySpace, Facebook, Youtube and there are even sites specially dedicated to planking such as www. plankings.org , www.plankinglove.com , www.plankingrules.com , www.iplanking. com, and www.plankinglol.com. Majority of Miamians think it is ludicrous and that the youth has way too much time in their hands. I decided to see how this popular phenomenon came about and you will be surprised to hear what I found out!

where humiliating initiation takes place and teens feel the need to be a part of a group that they are bound to do anything! It’s quite scary the things people would do to just feel like they are a part of something. Matter of fact a few years ago you may all remember the teen that lost his life in the University of Miami during a hazing ritual where he had to jump in the lake and then drowned.Biting: One word TWILIGHT. This is where people bite someone with the intention of leaving teeth marks and taking blood. Hepatitis and HIV make this biting trend extremely dangerous!

MyLifeStyle | MyEntertainment | Mypleasure | MyDining | MyFuture |

Europe and Japan started what was called “The Laying Down Game” which then became popular in South Australia but changed the name to “planking”. There was excitement in South Australia where young adults started planking as a prank in nightclubs which then lead to planking everywhere and pretty much anywhere! The stranger the place the better the plank and of course a picture would be taken to share with social networks, such as Facebook which has an Australian planking account that already has 86,000 followers! One of the main reasons planking is done is to show off daring planks or wittiness in their planks. Many people take their time in planking by using creativity and spontaneity. One planker even got caught planking on a police car and now officers are warning the public about the dangers of planking. I decided to ask the people of Miami what exactly they thought of planking and majority of the responses considered this trend stupid and were even upset when I mentioned the word PLANK. The other half of people just laughed at the thought of it and considers it as a fun new sport. But I came across one response that left me taken aback a man by the name of Harvey Gonzalez responded “According to Bow Wow and Xzibit planking is racist.” At first I was perplexed with such a response but when I asked why he considers planking racist it all came together. In the 1500’s and 1600’s slaves were shipped and before placed in the boat the slaves had to lay on a platform in a plank position where they were chained and attached to what was called

“plank” beds. Not only is planking considered racist but it is also dangerous depending where the plank is done. For instance, the first reported death was a 20 year old Australian male who attempted to impress his friends by planking on a balcony but little did he know he would accidentally fall 70 feet down to his death. Escalators, cop cars, mailboxes, roofs you name it anything you can imagine is being planked on. The question everyone is asking is why? One of the reasons of this global trend of planking is that it is a new art form for photo and filming for many artists. On the other hand, there are many that have no reason at all for planking except for pure fun. Whether you think it’s pointless, artistic or dangerous one thing is for sure I hope the next global trend is much more fascinating and productive. Check out other out of the ordinary trends: Flash Mob: Out of all these strange trends this is the only one I think is entertaining. A group of people get together at a certain time and place that is public and perform an act that is planned beforehand. I actually witnessed a flash mob here in Miami at Lincoln Road last year in October. Scared at first when a huge mob of about 100 people disguised as zombies ran down the streets of Lincoln rob screaming almost like a scene in thriller from MJ. There are different types of Flash mob such as freezing, dancing and so on. Hazing : Has been going on for years you may not know the term but I’m sure you either experienced , heard about it, or seen it in movies. Fraternities and sororities are known for hazing rituals

MIAMI-DADE PARKS TOUTED FOR ITS MIAMIDADE TRAIL DESIGN GUIDELINES AND BENEFITS STUDY The Miami-Dade Park and Recreation Department received the award of honor from the Florida Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (FLASLA), in the category of Planning and Analysis, for its Miami-Dade County Trail Design Guidelines and Benefits Study. This study provides standards and guidelines for County trails and greenways. In addition, this work establishes a methodology to analyze the benefits of trails such as vehicle trip reduction, increase in accessibility, reduction in pollution, effects on property values and job creation. “We are very proud to have been selected for this prestigious award,” said Miami-Dade Parks Director Jack Kardys. “This recognition is a validation of our tireless efforts to provide quality trails and greenways throughout Miami-Dade County.” This project also received honors from the American Planning Association (APA) Florida Gold Coast Section in the category of Best Plan, Report or Study and was also among the national finalist in this year’s ASLA Professional Design Awards in the category of Analysis and Planning.

LOBSTER SEASON STARTS SOON, ARE YOU PREPARED? Lobster season is just around the corner and the Miami-Dade Sea Grant Extension Office wants to make sure that you are prepared. The official commercial and recreational lobster season begins August 6 and runs through March 31. In order to participate there are certain recreational regulations that you must follow: Recreational fishers must possess a saltwater fishing license as well as a spiny lobster permit in order to harvest spiny lobsters. Bag limits for the two-day sport season are 6 lobsters per person per day within Biscayne National Park and Monroe

County and 12 lobsters per person per day everywhere else. Anglers are responsible for knowing those areas closed to lobstering, such as the Biscayne Bay/Card Sound sanctuary, no take zones within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Everglades National Park, Dry Tortugas National Park, and areas within John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (Pennekamp is entirely closed to harvesting during the two-day sport season). In addition to standard safety precautions, such as the mandatory divers-down flag, divers and snorkelers harvesting lobster should be aware of the presence of lionfish while in the water. The invasive lionfish has become pervasive in South Florida’s waters and is likely to be found in waters where spiny lobsters occur. These double-sided waterproof lobster gauges have regulation information on one side and lionfish information on the other. Anyone harvesting lobsters must possess a lobster gauge and measure all lobsters while in the water. Lobsters must have a carapace length greater than 3 inches to be legal and must be kept whole while at sea.To receive your FREE spiny lobster gauge, go to: http://miami-dade.ifas.ufl.edu/ environment/sea_grant_anglers. shtml and follow the link to fill out a brief survey. Be sure to include your name, mailing address, and email. The Miami-Dade Cooperative Extension is a partnership of the Miami-Dade Consumer Services Department and the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. About CSD.The Miami-Dade Consumer Services Department (CSD), www.miamidade.gov/ csd, investigates and mediates consumer complaints, enforces the County’s consumer protection laws and business regulations, and licenses certain businesses. In addition, the department’s Cooperative Extension Division provides technical assistance to commercial agricultural growers, backyard gardeners, homeowners, and manages youth and family development programs. Jesus Chronicles “Matt” as she went on to explain that the name “Matt” was an old exboyfriend of hers and that she was embarrassed and regretted having done that to herself. She went on to mention that she had been inquiring about getting it covered up with a flower or something exotic but that it would have to be so big and dark that it would look even worse. I felt sorry for her. I know what it is to be in love, and make decisions in which you have to carry the burden for a lifetime, I think most of us do.

Out of curiosity I struck up a conversation with her. After a few pleasantries I asked her if she had a son. She denied having kids and surprisingly asked why I would ask her that. I pointed to the tattoo on her neck and told her I knew some friends who lovingly ink their siblings names or pictures on themselves. Her mood dimmed

I shrugged my shoulders and smiled at her as I could not think of anything better to suggest she do about covering up that tattoo. As I departed, I was halfheartedly thinking about her problem, when suddenly the Holy Spirit hit me with the solution....PRAISE JESUS! I walked out to my truck and grabbed my Bible and walked

back in to the store. I found the woman again about two minutes later, walked up to her again and asked if she believed in Jesus Christ, she said “yes”. Overjoyed, I explained that I had the solution to her problem. As she looked bewildered at me, I opened the Bible to the Gospel of Matthew. My Bible is structured in a way that each chapter has a brief summary heading, therefore it is easy to see what each chapter holds...miracles, fasting, prayers, etc. As I pointed to several chapters on several different pages, I explained to her that the actual words of Jesus was in this book and that you could read through it and pick a saying from Jesus’ teachings that pertained to your life the most, and simply put a “hew” on the backside of “Matt” and add a chapter number and verse. I could sense relief in her voice as she asked me to look up

Matthew 5:5 (Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth). I told her that “Now instead of regret, you have a treasure chest...that when people come up to you, they will ask you about that verse of scripture on your neck instead of an old boyfriends name, and this would give you the chance to save some souls to Heaven.... saving souls baby!!” I shouted pumping my fist as if I were at a Heat game. She smiled and said that she would read the Gospel of Matthew that night, She seemed sincere. Never in my life has it been so clear to me that Jesus Christ can turn a bad situation into a beautiful one instantly. This was the first time I have seen it work literally in front of my eyes. And considering my past, I am humbled that the LORD would use me to deliver His message. What an amazing God we serve!!

MyLifeStyle | MyEntertainment | Mypleasure | MyDining | MyFuture |

During my travels the other day I ran across a beautiful woman with amazing green eyes at a local supermarket. She was much shorter than I with long black hair and several tattoo’s on different parts of her body, one in particular that stood out was the name “Matt” across the side of her neck. The script was a very nicely done pseudocursive with letters about one inch tall and totaling about 4 inches in length, so it was rather sizable and took up about half the side of her neck.

dentures Lets talk about dentures. Choosing to wear dentures is a personal decision that must be made with the advice of your dentist, and with your full knowledge of all benefits and risks involved, as well as treatment alternatives. It is essential that you understand not only the how and why of denture prosthesis, but also what to do and what not to do while continually caring for your dentures Important Information Regarding Dentures Millions of people who have missing teeth or who suffer from severe dentition problems wear and function well with traditional dentures. The likelihood of tooth loss increases with age, but can also be caused and/or accelerated by poor dental hygiene or some form of accident. Dentures are prosthetic devices created as a replication of human teeth and are worn in the mouth in the event that natural teeth are missing. They are typically made out of an acrylic resin that sometimes incorporates porcelain or metal and come in different styles and designs to fit the particular needs of your mouth. Benefits of Dentures: Dentures provide great benefits that can significantly improve your health and appearance. Modern technology and design have led to advanced yet natural looking dentures that not only restore lost functionality but also improve image and even tighten sagging facial muscles that result from tooth loss. The following are several key benefits that should be known when considering what dentures can provide: Dentures are often the least expensive way to resolve problems associated with missing, loose, badly decayed, sensitive, or very unattractive-looking teeth. Such problems can include superficial gum injuries, difficulties with chewing and eating food, especially crunchy or tough food, and unsightliness when speaking or smiling.

By replacing lost teeth, dentures restore the ability to speak more easily and pronounce words clearly. Dentures make it possible to have whiter, straighter teeth than would otherwise be possible without an immense financial burden. Dentures can last for periods of up to five to ten years with proper treatment. Disadvantages/Risks of Dentures: Although dentures are a relatively affordable substitute for natural teeth they are not in fact like your natural teeth and the decision to use dentures should be well thought-out. The following issues should be considered: Dentures require time and effort before you get used to the feel of the prosthesis in your mouth. The likelihood of a denture patient’s success or failure rests in large part with the patient’s determination and adaptability. Dentures have unique care and maintenance requirements that you will have to incorporate into your daily lifestyle. Dentures make it harder to speak for first-time users. Some people will find that having dentures basically requires them to relearn their methods of speech. Issues include awkwardness with pronunciation, the tongue struggling to form words, and unwanted sounds, such as whistling, clicking, and smacking. However, most of these problems lessen or go away entirely with time and experience, and are made better if you make sure your dentures stay in their proper position. Dentures may lead to irritation and oral sores. These are usually caused by chewing action but may also be due to clenching or grinding teeth or even food particles getting stuck beneath the dentures.Taking adequate breaks from wearing your dentures, cleaning them thoroughly on a frequent basis, and occasionally massaging your gums while your dentures soak will reduce or remedy this situation. Traditional dentures are not anchored in bone and

>> by Dr Valeria Soltanik (dmd p.a. dn16609)

are not held in by roots like natural teeth. They instead sit passively on top of the gums and are held in by muscles and suction. As a result, this may cause difficulty chewing certain foods by making the dentures move out of place or fail to adequately grind the food involved. Dental paste (adhesives) or implants (which are surgically placed and more expensive) can be used to anchor dentures in place. You may still have to be more selective with your food choices and eat slowly and carefully. Dentures can cause foods to taste differently. While dentures are made from neutral components free of chemicals, they may still cause certain foods to taste weird or not as good as they used to. However, since taste buds are located predominately on the tongue, this is usually a transitory issue that lasts only during the adaptation phase and will likely disappear when you become acquainted with your dentures. ITypes of Dentures Partial Dentures: Partial dentures correct gaps in between your teeth and are anchored to natural teeth still present in the mouth. A partial denture is something to consider when you are missing some but not all of your natural teeth. This type is particularly useful and beneficial to remaining teeth because it prevents their decay, assists functions such as chewing, possibly improves speech, and eliminates the risk of shifting out of place. Complete Dentures: Complete dentures are an option given to those who need to replace an entire set of teeth. Other Options: Although partial and complete dentures are the two basic types of dentures, there are a couple of options on how best to incorporate these into your life, as well as different methods of installation. These choices include immediate dentures and overdentures. For more details call us to set an appointment to 305-466-2334.

interview fatjoe

by Andrés Carrero

After sitting with Fat Joe, I became more educated about him & Terror Squad. In the interview we covered the discovery of DJ Khaled, Rick Ross and more artists. We also covered how he is trying to live a healthier lifestyle and many other topics. I hope you enjoy the interview. Joe, MYAMI Magazine wants to touch on a few things, especially on your success throughout the years, I mean we could go back to 1993 with Represent to Summer 2011 with The Darkside Vol 2. Can you inform our readers and viewers about Fat Joe and his success in Miami? Well, Miami is really special, when I was going through the death of Big Pun I felt really depressed and when I

came to Miami I received a lot of love, which felt great because I was able to escape the depression. That gave me a special bond and love for the city of Miami. Afterwards, I moved to Miami and then I discovered DJ Khaled. We signed him and got him on the radio. It’s funny because when I first came down here they were playing Luke and Bass music. So then we got DJ Khaled on the radio and he starts playing Mobb

Deep, Fat Joe, and Nas. Real hip hop music, it really changed things. DJ Khaled is like my little brother and he always used to ask me to let him do an album and I was like “Nah nah”, until I said “You know what lets do it!” We flew to New York and took him to the record label and I told them “Yo, you need to listen to this” and they weren’t having it they said “Joe, we don’t sign and make CD’s with DJ’s.” So, I was like “Man, if you

have love for me and trust what I am doing, this kid is a monster”and before we knew it he went GOLD. As well as hitting the charts at number one and addition to his success, he brought Rick Ross. into the scene. Then, a really good friend, Robert Fernandez, who is like family asked me what I thought about PitBull and I was like he is extremely talented and before I knew it I had cosigned PitBull, as well as

Trick Daddy. Very interesting, now to let you know, MYAMI Magazine really concentrates on the city. What can you tell our upcoming artists in Miami about how to stay positive and have faith that dreams come true? I mean it’s beautiful on one side of the bridge but the other side is not as great and there is a struggle behind the palm trees. Can you hit the power

People really need to stop taking so many carbs, it is extremely bad for your health...... ....I feel like when they see that Fat Joe really did it, it motivates people to know that everything in life is possible.

points on what they should do being that there is so many talented people in this city. Well you know for one, I call it spade to spade in Miami. If you are an upcoming artist you need to get an attorney and also learn the business aspect of the game. As far as the location, we happen to be in a unique and beautiful city. It’s really a magical place, especially with what the Heat brought this year. Musically, Lil Wayne lives here so does Rick Ross, Fat Joe, and DJ Khaled. You know the Corporates it’s definitely poppin’. I remember back in the day if you wanted to get heard you had to go to NY or Atlanta, now it’s in MIAMI! As an artist you live in a unique city, so if you see Fat Joe at the car wash slide him a demo, if you see Pharell harras him he lives down here. In my eyes, it is a very unique situation. I had viewed a video with Jay Z and Young Jeezy called” Murder Music”, is that going to be on your next release? Jay Z? Nah, I have done nothing with Jay Z. It’s that internet hype, just the other day they said that Fat Joe is dead! Sure enough, I was on the treadmill feeling great. Yeah, never trust the internet. So how about the next release The Darkside VOL 2? The Darkside will be a free mix tape. Cool & Dre are the executive producers for that, they are almost done. We are also working on our main album called “Global Music”. The first single is featuring Chris Brown as well as touring a lot. I just got back from Dubai, France, Italy & Australia. My family is pretty spread out, so instead of making an underground Hip Hop album, I would just make an album that everyone could relate to. I did see that you have done things for the kids in the past, what would you say Fat Joe will do in the future for the kids? I am really trying to educate parents of childhood obesity. I mean I have lost many friends, family & loved ones to this disease. To give you an idea in the past year I have lost 7 at really young ages due to heart attacks. I believe that we need to let the parents know that you do not need to eat the rice and the beans just eat the meat and a salad or vegetables. People really need to stop taking so many carbs, it is extremely bad for your health. I feel like when they see that Fat Joe really did it, it motivates people to know that everything in life is possible. It’s just adapting to a healthier lifestyle which is what everyone should want to live. I am also trying to get a

So will you be getting your

feet wet with apparel or liquor? I do remember FJ560, will you be doing anything in the near future? Well, we are working on a liquor brand, so we are in the process of that but what we are working on is a cooking show with Queen Latifah. We will have an in studio audience, it will be like a Rachel Ray. The way we will be doing it is like we will be cooking chicken, rice and beans and the reason why we are cooking it is because it’s Marc Anthony’s favorite plate. So lets give it to Marc

Anthony and then he comes out. We have very creative ideas to getting well known celebrities on the show and we are really excited to get started on that. Thanks for coming through Joe and educating my readers on what Fat Joe is doing. Best of luck and we wish you much more success. Thanks for having me! Make sure to view the video on MYAMITV and pick the issue up, MYAMI Magazine representing baby!

show that would help the kids that get bullied in school. The main thing is to reach out and stress health to these kids because a lot of them are dying early and getting diabetes. That is the most powerful thing I could do as a person to help inspire them to know that it is possible. I mean I am a gangster rapper and I do have skeletons in the closet but the main way that I could give to the community and helping people is to teach these kids & educate them about health.

KVETCH... A kvetch is defined as a person who complains chronically. I’m a kvetch or a bitch depending on how sensitive you are. If you’re easily offended or take life too seriously, you may not enjoy what I have to say. With that being said; let the bitching begin! Last week I was invited to one of my closest friend’s birthday parties. He is a super fabulous, pill popping, shit show of a gay man, so of course his party was at Twist. I abhor Twist! There is nothing worse than being in a building filled with good looking men and not one of them is interested in what I’ve got to give, but nonetheless I agreed to make an appearance. After driving around looking for parking for fifty-five minutes, I was extremely perturbed; especially after the parking spot I found was eight blocks away from the night club. I did the schlep in my high heels, (pissed off with every step) to find a mile

long line at the door. I politely informed the door guy that I was there for a birthday party in which he scoffed at and sent me to the end of the line. Of course I waited in the line for all of two minutes before sending a pissed off text to my friend & then starting the eight block schelp back to my car. Every girl who has walked on Washington Ave by herself at 1:30 AM knows the lewd remarks that are made by every Joe Schmoe on the street. Guys: Give me a break! Whistling, honking, or saying “Yo ma!” is not going to make me stop my stride to talk to your dumbass. As if being a single girl in Miami isn’t hard enough, now we have to contend with Kim Kardashian & her twenty-caret engagement ring. Really? I’m all about being Zsa Zsa Gabor gaudy but twenty-carets is a bit pretentious, particularly for a girl who got famous for making a porno with Brandy’s

little brother. Speaking of big assed annoying women; Coco & Ice T now have their own reality show. First of all Coco has an ass like a cement truck & Ice T is simply disgusting. How did they get a TV show? Tuning into an overly tanned peroxide blonde and her hasbeen rapper husband is exactly what I want to watch during my free time…NOT. I patiently await their home videos to surface and that’s when I am REALLY going lose it. Take that back; I’ve already lost it! Dealing with Miami men is enough to drive any sane woman to the Nunnery or an insane asylum. I’ve come to the conclusion that dating in Miami is a form of self-masochism. Miami men are all trying to be something that they’re not. My favorites are those who wear every dollar they’ve ever made & have a negative checking account balance. Your True

Religion jeans and Louis Vuitton loafers may look great but your inability to take me out to a nice dinner is not so hot buddy! The women that entertain these fools (e.g. all my girl friends) keep this depressing reality alive. I don’t get it! All my girl friends are hotty patotties who are all dating LOSERS. This drives me to drink large amounts of alcohol at the local watering hole several nights a week, which also puts a dent in my dating life since I don’t find degenerate losers attractive. But hey; the majority of Miami women do. Girls: Realize what you’ve got & even if it isn’t much, you still have a vagina and most men want that. Also, do me a favor… when men do their routine acts of stupidity; call them out on it and preferably in public so you can embarrass the hell out of them. Maybe this tactic will help eliminate the losers. Your bitchy friend, Nicole.

They have earned three Grammy Awards, five Latin Grammy Awards, 5 MTV Video

Music Awards Latin America, three Premios Juventud awards, nine Billboard Latin Music Awards and 13 Premios Lo Nuestro awards. Latin rock superstars Maná got their start in Guadalajara in 1986 when singer Fher Olvero, guitarist Ulises Calleros, brother and bassist Juan Diego Calleros, and CubanColombian drummer Alex González joined together, initially signing with Polygram. Unsatisfied with the direction in which the label wanted to take them, they switched to Warner Music by the time their debut, Falta Amor, was released in 1992. Shortly after, however, Ulises left and was

replaced by keyboardist Iván González and guitarist Cesar Lopez, who remained with the group only for their seminal 1994 album, Donde Jugaran los Niños?, the record that propelled them into the ranks of Latin rock stardom. En Vivo, which captured the energy of Maná’s live show, was released in 1995, the same year that new guitarist Sergio Vallin made his first appearance, on Cuando los Angeles Lloren. After Sueños Liquidos came out in 1997, the band began to receive heavy global attention, particularly in the U.S., that was solidified after the release of MTV Unplugged in 1999 and an appearance on Carlos

Santana’s record Supernatural with the song “Corazón Espinado.” The legendary guitarist returned the favor when he performed on Maná’s 2002 Revolución de Amor, the record that definitively showed them for the stars they were and gave them a Grammy for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. Four years later, the band’s sixth studio album, Amar Es Combatir, recorded at Miami’s The Hit Factory, was released. In its first week, Amar Es Combatir became the highest charting debut for a Spanish-language album by a group on the Billboard 200.

Food

By Ye Jun

as medicine Few would like the idea of adding medicine to food, but for the Chinese, sometimes food is medicine, and adding natural herbs to dishes may mean the creation of a gourmet dish with healthy benefits. Some of the ingredients often used this way includes ginger, ginseng and angelica root. For instance, ginger is often infused in boiling water to create a home cure for mild throat infections or to prevent the onset of a cold after one is caught in heavy rain. Ginseng is slowly stewed with chicken to replenish energy or qi deficiency. Angelica is a popular tonic herb, often added to a ginger-and-mutton stew to make a warming winter soup. Such healthful cooking has given rise to a genre of restaurants that specialize in herbal cuisine. Herbal Cuisine Kitchen is one example, with a whole menu featuring a variety of dishes incorporating healthy herbs, beautifully presented. Roucongrong, or cistanche, is a parasitic root plant produced in the deserts of Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia. Locals dub it “desert ginseng”, and cook it with mutton and beef to strengthen the kidneys, as a natural aphrodisiac for men. Herbal Cuisine Kitchen adds it to lamb tripe, served as a cold appetizer, and also cooks it with seafood in a clay pot. There is more fungus on the menu, including the celebrated lacy bamboo fungus, slowly braised with turtle skirts and ganoderma. Ganoderma

is credited with all sorts of health-giving properties from just good-for-you to anticarcinogenic. It is a tonic soup very suitable for the season. Even beef ribs are given the herbal treatment, cooked with a vegetable mash and papaya to make it really tender. Venison, a more gamey meat, is another energy booster and here, it is braised with aged tangerine peel or chenpi, dried figs and jujubes to achieve a perfectly balanced tonic. Chef Lee Wang has more than 20 years’ culinary experience and confesses he is influenced by his father, a Chinese traditional medicine doctor. The chef says it is possible to use Chinese herbs in everyday cooking for healthier eating. But he adds that eating must be balanced with exercise and enough rest. The use of herbs in food has generated some recent controversy. For example, wild ginseng may be a too strong tonic for some, and pregnant women should avoid saffron. An official regulation limits the number of herbs used in restaurants to 300. Wang says that’s way below what’s used in Chinese households. The average bill at Herbal Cuisine Kitchen is 150 yuan a person in the dining area, and 300 yuan in the private rooms. Wang is also executive chef at Green Loulan Muslim Restaurant, which serves both Muslim cuisine and healthy herbal dishes. You can contact the writer at yejun@chinadaily.com.cn.

make your own cake Mini Molten Chocolate Cakes with Mocha Sauce Ingredients 4 ounce(s) dark or bittersweet chocolate (60-75% cacao), coarsely chopped 2 tablespoon(s) unsalted butter, cut into chunks 1 tablespoon(s) granulated sugar 1 1/2 tablespoon(s) light cream 2 teaspoon(s) instant espresso powder, or granules dissolved in 1 tablespoon hot water, divided 1 tablespoon(s) light corn syrup 1 large egg 2 tablespoon(s) canola oil 1 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract 1/8 teaspoon(s) salt 5 tablespoon(s) confectioner’s sugar 3 tablespoon(s) all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon(s) unsweetened Dutchprocess cocoa powder 2 teaspoon(s) very hot water

Preparation 1 .Position rack in center of oven; preheat to 350°F. Generously coat the mini muffin pan with cooking spray. 2. Place chocolate and butter in a medium microwave-safe bowl. (Alternatively, see “No microwave?” below.) Microwave on High for 1 minute. Stir well, then continue microwaving on Medium, stirring every 20 seconds, until the remaining chocolate melts completely. 3.To prepare filling: Stir together granulated sugar, cream, and half the espresso mixture in a small microwavesafe bowl. Microwave on High just to steaming, 20 to 40 seconds. (Alternatively, combine in a small saucepan and heat over medium-low heat until just steaming.) Stir until the sugar dissolves. Add

corn syrup and half the melted chocolate (reserve the other half for the batter); stir until completely smooth. Cover and transfer to the freezer until cold and firm, about 30 minutes. 4.To prepare batter: When the filling has been chilling for 20 minutes, whisk egg, oil, vanilla, salt, and the remaining espresso mixture in a medium bowl until very smooth. Return the remaining chocolate mixture to the microwave. Microwave on Medium, stirring every 20 seconds, until just warm again (do not overheat). In two batches, whisk the egg mixture into the warm chocolate until well blended. Sift confectioners’ sugar, flour, and cocoa over the batter and whisk in just until smoothly incorporated. 5.To assemble cakes: Remove the filling from the freezer. Spoon half the batter into the mini muffin cups, about

1 rounded teaspoon per cup. Spoon 1/2 teaspoon filling onto the center of each (reserve the rest for the sauce). Divide the remaining batter evenly among the muffin cups, about 1 rounded teaspoon per cake. Smooth out the batter to cover the filling. 6.Bake the cakes on the middle rack until the edges look dry and puffed but the centers still look very underdone and puddinglike, 6 to 9 minutes. Let cool on a wire rack until firm, about 2 minutes. Place a cutting board on top of the pan and invert the mini cakes out onto it. If the cakes are stuck to the pan, run a knife around and under them to loosen. 7.To prepare sauce and serve: Thoroughly stir very hot water into the reserved filling, 1 teaspoon at a time, until very smooth and slightly fluid. Serve the warm cakes drizzled with the sauce.

VOTED BEST BAR IN MIAMI 2010

By Andrés Carrero

About the party it was great it was filled with an amazing group of people, the drinks were cold and the music was banging with a Live Band outside in the Patio area and the DJ inside banging great tracks..This is my version of Cheers. They recently renovated this dive to include an entire outdoor area with a full service tiki bar, tables, stools, a protective awning. The beer prices are the best, if my memory serves me right its 6

Headed to Billy’s Too Pub to celebrate Mickey Mundays Birthday & the release to Tall Tales. The Cd has short stories on what Mickey really went threw in the 80’s,I sat with him and Carlos Alvarez from Green Vinal and was so entertained with the tracks that I highly recomend if you want to hear Mickey Munday’s exclusive memories make sure to pick it up it is a keeper you could find it on Itunes. If you dont know who Mickey Munday is then you should ask some one, he has lived and worked in this city of Miami for many years,he was the GURU of transporting very expensive packages in the 80’s making a hefty amount of dollars. I strongly suggest and urge if you have not view Cocaine Cowboys make a must see to educate you on what really happened in the 80’s in Miami.

dollar pitures until 2:00 am and then the price jumps to $9. Aside from being open until 5:00am on most days (which is simply awesome to any veteran bar hopper), the best things about Billy’s Pub Too are firstly, they serve Yuengling on tap which is great for those trying to escape the corporate domination of watered down light beer. Secondly the party & events like tonight get entirely out of hand with everybody n their mamma gettin’ Guchi Mane ‘Wasted’.The party people are generally good looking and fun loving. Last but not least the staff is great. I highly recomend to give it a shot, nice dive bar to meet really interesting people and enjoy a bite and a drink. I give a shotout to their staff an amazing group of people!
