Chad Ochocinco, top NFL player, signs-on to be Bike For Life’s Spokesperson

W

ith the success of DECOBIKE it is only natural that they would want to give back to the community and to help create and foster the environmentalists of the future. Starting June 21, 2011 in cooperation with The City of Miami Beach Parks and Recreation Department, Bike For Life will offer classes and seminars on bike safety, repair, and enjoyment to dozens of underprivileged youth in Miami Beach. To help make biking even cooler Chad Ochocinco will now appear in Bike For Life’s Public Service Announcements to encourage kids to sign-up with this program to show them how cool it is to just get around on a bike without the expense of a car and the opportunity to save that money for college or other advanced training. He will also explain the health and environmental benefits to staying fit and thinking green. The Director and Founder of Bike for Life USA is Guerby Mertil, one of the original team members that is involved in the launch of DecoBike. Guerby has several years of experience working with nonprofit community organizations such as: Shake A Leg, Tools for Change, Soul on 7th, and more. He felt it important that even though you need to be 18 years old to ride a DECOBIKE, kids 12 to 17 would benefit immensely from these types

throughout the school year.” Bike for Life USA is partnering with Wal-Mart and will be receiving bike donations to be utilized in these classes giving them to the students who work on the repairs. The City Parks and Recreational Programs are offering the space for classes and offices to house Bike For Life USA at their 21st Street location. Bike For Life will begin classes starting June 21st and will be launching a membership drive through their website and Facebook starting on June 6th. For more information visit our website www.BikeforlifeUSA.com and our Facebook page at www.facebook. com/Bike-For-Life.

of fun seminars. Kids learning about this new trend in public transportation could be motivated positively to lead the way for what he calls the new “generation green”. “Not all kids can play football, basketball, or baseball” says Guerby, “but Bike For Life gives these kids an opportunity to get physically in shape

and learn all of the environmental benefits that they themselves could impact in terms of their carbon blue print and more.” Guerby understands what it is like to be a young kid on the street with nothing to do. He in fact turned his life around by pursuing a career in sports that kept him active during the times between 3:30 and 5:30 when a lot of unsupervised kids get into trouble. “Our classes will engage these kids during that critical time and during the summer months and

by Khalil Martin

...I got sponsors and each sponsor had to pay for space on my vest, so I made maybe $230 in 1 second...

Born Chad Javon Johnson on January 9th 1978, this outspoken and very entertaining NFL wide receiver is arguably one of the most recognizable faces in American sports today. Often described as a showboat and a gloryhog, I found that there is much more to him than some in the media would have you believe.I had the opportunity to sit down with him and ask him a few questions and even though I was biased (as I was already a huge fan) I developed a completely new respect for him as a person. The following is an excerpt from that interview and I hope it will make you see him for what he is : just an average guy who is amazing at what he does. - Hey Chad, today we want to ask you about DECOBIKE and about Chad Ochocinco as well. Me, I'm doing nothing, my life is boring. Lol. - What made you choose DECOBIKE? What we are doing with DECOBIKE is something that I have seen abroad as far as making transportation easy and affordable. Right now we are going through rough times as a country, so what DECOBIKE is doing is an awesome thing since you can ride all around Miami Beach while making people’s

lives easier and better. And if it is green, it is clean, which means we are not polluting the air and we make people save money as well. The key here is affordability. The fact that we are also reaching out to children is huge because we have an obesity problem in America which needs to be addressed, and DECOBIKE is doing its part to help fight obesity for I felt the need to associate with them and help spread the word. -How did the fact that your cousin Samari Rolle made it to the league in ’98 helped you along your journey? He was my motivation. I looked up to him, I adapted myself and tried to imitate the way he dressed, the way he talked, and I even copied the number he wore when he played. The only thing I could not copy it was how smart he was, it was incredible how well he managed to balance schoolwork and football at the same time. This was one of the reasons why I got out of high school and I started to go around in circles. I wasn’t focused at all and I felt that football would take me where I wanted to be; I thought it was going to be easy but after bouncing from Langston to Santa Monica (which took me 3 years instead of 2) and from

there to Oregon State, I decided to try what I like to call it “my Grandma’s Way”.

9th grade so it was really my first love but in high school, since football and soccer are on the same season, I had to think on - Hey, grandmas are always a long-term basis. There was no right! money in soccer back then, so I She was right from the start, I made my choice but the love for just never listened, I thought that the game is still there so I play talent alone was enough. soccer whenever I can. - We all have to learn our own way True, some people need to learn the hard way, so I eventually listened to her and got my life in order. - Yours is a success story despite the early obstacles (Langston , Santa Monica, Oregon State). What was it like to go to so many schools before getting the recognition that catapulted you to the NFL? I was a bad kid, I'm from Liberty City, I went to Miami Beach High School. I wasn’t a good student at all. You are laughing at me but my grandma has my school reports somewhere! - What was your high school experience like? Fun. Skipping class, detention, girls, and the Principal’s office, but I was very good on the field.

- How did you even come up with the idea for bull riding? When I saw that post on FB I was a bit worried. My twitter is so powerful! I was watching ESPN during a bull riding competition that was coming to Atlanta and I was already there so I tweeted "I'm riding the bull competition against the guy (valder-sumn), I was joking, but then the people from PBR tweeted me back saying “Oh, you are? Why don’t you come out here? We challenge you, we will give you $10,000 and a new truck if you can stay on the bull for 8 seconds". So I went there and I rode, and of course I only rode for 1 second.

- One and a half seconds. One and a half is right, it is hard and impossible to prepare for this. Everybody has seen a bull ride but not the potential in it. -How was your experience when You see, I got sponsors and each you played soccer? sponsor had to pay for space Great. I played soccer until the on my vest, so I made maybe

$220/230 in 1 second. So now you see the point of bull riding. - Major League baseball is the only sure thing right now. Any chance Ochocinco will pull an MJ and put on a baseball jersey? No I can’t bat, but I can steal a shitload of bases though. Do you think they would sign me as a pinch-runner only? - Go for it! And let Myami Magazine know if it works out. - How did you get involved with apps such as madChad? This guy I work with runs a software company so we came up with the twitter app and madChad just trying to figure out different ways to attack the market, madChad was very successful and we are now in the process of releasing madChad 2 so we will be adding new things to it and making improvements. - What is it like to work with Terrell Owens in two separate industries? Fun. T.O. is completely misunderstood unless you know him. You have to know him because the Media will try to make him look as a bad person but he is not, he is the kind of person that will say the things that people are scared to say but

What was it like having a show on VH1 (Ultimate Catch)? There were many women, 85 women at one time is fun. I was very respectful but I enjoyed it.

To be honest, I wasn’t aiming for it, it’s me just being me; like Manny being Manny (I was just hanging out with Manny yesterday, lol). I wasn’t trying, I had no specific goal to get there. They did one that said I was the second most influential person in the world. You didn’t see that one?

How did you handle that? It was easy, I just played it cool. A lot of different attitudes, a lot of different people, but that was a one-time thing and I enjoyed it. That is behind me now.

- I didn’t know about that one. Yeah, the New York Times did one, I’m sure you can find it, some Brazilian guy was first and Barrack was like 5th or something like that.

- You are engaged now. How is that like? Yeah, Evelyn. It ‘s FUN. She is someone who is very feisty, similar to me, and she keeps my attention and that’s my problem. She is very cool, we tell each other everything, and I love her to death.

- So you are more influential than Barack Obama right now. Wow. It’s because of his topics really, he has to be focused on politics and world issues, but I can be on porn one day and on football the next. So I’m all over the place which makes it much more interesting. But just stop and think for a second. Have you ever thought you could be more influential than the president of the United

need to be said. - Who is the better receiver? He is. Numbers prove it.

-In April 2011, CNBC listed Ochocinco as the "Most Influential Athlete In Social Media List”. How does that feel?

States? I never thought about it really, but it’s cool though (smirk on his face) - Talk about your four kids and what they mean to you. EVERYTHING - Is there a different Ochocinco at home than the one we see outside? What you see is what you get from me, 100% of the time. - Do you want your kids to play sports like their dad? Yeah, they do. My son plays football, the girls run track and cheerlead, so they do the normal things kids do as much as possible, they are busy, and as time goes on they will choose their own path, similar to what I did.

MARX brothers - How does it feel to be in a select group? You have an icecream flavor named after you Pretty good actually. - Who is the Chad Ochocinco of the NBA? Chad: I don’t think there is one. - Who is your favorite NBA player of all times? Jordan - Who do you think is going to win the NBA this year? HEAT - What would you do differently to solve the lockout that is not currently being done? It wouldn’t even have gotten to this point if I was commissioner.

- What is your passion besides football? SEX

- What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the name of Carson Palmer? Awesome

- Who was your hero when you were growing up?

-Marvin Lewis? (Bengals coach) Awesome

-Paul Tagliabue (former NFL commissioner) He was cool - Roger Goodell (current NFL commissioner) - That’s my dad - Randy Moss One of the best ever - Brett Favre THE best ever - Darrell Reeves The best right now -Better than Namdi? (Asomugha) Two completely different players all together - Who is the one player in the league that you would love to play with? Brady - Any chance of you playing for the Dolphins if we ever have football? NO, not happening. Lol.

Information about Hurricanes Hurricanes are severe tropical storms that form in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Scientists can now predict hurricanes, but people who live in coastal communities should plan what they will do if they are told to evacuate. Prepare for Hurricanes Get a kit of emergency supplies and prepare a portable kit in case you have to evacuate. Familiarize yourself with the terms that are used to identify a hurricane. A hurricane watch means a hurricane is possible in your area. Be prepared to evacuate. Monitor local radio and television news outlets or listen to NOAA Weather Radio for the latest developments. A hurricane warning is when a hurricane is expected in your area. If local authorities advise you to evacuate, leave immediately. Prepare to secure your property. Cover all of your home’s

windows with pre-cut ply wood or hurricane shutters to protect your windows from high winds. Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down. Keep all trees and shrubs well trimmed. If you have a car, fill the gas tank in case you have to evacuate. Plan to Evacuate Plan how you will leave and where you will go if you are advised to evacuate. If you do not have a car, plan alternate means of evacuating. Plan places where your family will meet, both within and outside of your immediate neighborhood. Identify several places you could go in an emergency, a friend’s home in another town, a motel or public shelter. If you have a car, keep a full tank of gas in it at all times in case you need to evacuate. Become familiar with alternate routes and other means of transportation out of your area. Take your emergency supply kit . Lock the door behind you. Take your pets with you, but understand that only service animals may be permitted in public shelters. Plan how you will care for your pets in an

emergency. Stay Informed Local authorities may not immediately be able to provide information on what is happening and what you should do. However, you should listen to NOAA Weather Radio, watch TV, listen to the radio or check the internet often for official news and instructions as they become available. Stay out of flood waters, if possible. The water may be contaminated or electrically charged. However, should you find yourself trapped in your vehicle in rising water get out immediately and seek higher ground. Be alert for tornadoes and flooding. If you see a funnel cloud or if local authorities issue a tornado warning take shelter underground, if possible or in an interior room away from windows. If waters are rising quickly or local authorities issue a floor of flash flood warning, seek higher ground. Stay away from downed power lines to avoid the risk of electric shock or electrocution. Do not return to your home until local authorities say it is safe. Even after the hurricane and after flood waters recede,

roads may be weakened and could collapse. Buildings may be unstable, and drinking water may be contaminated. Use common sense and exercise caution. If you are not able to evacuate, stay indoors away from all windows. Take shelter in an interior room with no windows if possible. Be aware that there may be a sudden lull in the storm as the eye of the hurricane moves over. Stay in your shelter until local authorities say it is safe. Hurricane Evacuation Centers DEM partners with Dade County Public Schools and the American Red Cross (ARC), to operate Hurricane Evacuation Centers (HEC). These HECs provide refuges of last resort for those individuals who need to evacuate and are unable to make their own evacuation/ sheltering arrangements, such as with friends, family, or in hotels outside of the evacuation zones. Bus Pickup Points For those individuals who do not have their own transportation to the HECs, this is provided by Miami-Dade Transit via “emergency evacuation bus pick-up sites” throughout the County’s evacuation zones. Any of the following Miami-Dade Transit Agency Bus Pick-Up points will be activated only for hurricane evacuations. Residents should listen to the media or call 3-1-1 to find out when the buses will transport people from the pick-up points to Red Cross Evacuation Centers. Buses that will transport people for hurricane evacuations will have a special notice on the front of the bus where the route information is displayed.

atching this bar on a good night and you may never want to leave. The people here are as important as the is food to make Burger and Beer Joint what it is. Divided into two main sections the first being the main dinning and seating area. It has a more

relaxed feel to it then the second sections being the full on bar. You can still order off their menu, but you will either be at the bar, at a small cocktail table or on the wall. As for that menu, it holds a list of 99 beers, and burgers with a gourmet twist as said by there web site. What I had on my visit was B&B

o G s t Le t! Hea

rated b e l e ple c ’games o e p Many B, Heats ffs and in B & the playo s g durin NBA Final

signature burger Mustand Sally. It was a massive, and tasty. First thing that caught my eye was the branded marks of the B&B logo directly on top of the brioche bun. Second the Lettuce and Tomato was on the side. What I noticed in my first bite of the burger, was

that the red onion marmelade was rather sweet, and the prosciutto was salty, and the brie cheese was mild in flavor while still making it self known. Did the over sweet, and to salty notes ruin the burger? Not at all, in fact as proclaimed by B&B, there is some real gourmet flavors

going on. The one item I had yet to mentions that brought all of the different flavors together was the 8 oz Wagyu beef patty it self. It’s the star of the show hands down, with one hell of a supporting cast of brie Cheese, red onion marmelade, and delicious sliced prosciutto.

B&B gave me a biker bar vibe with a feeling that really anyone would enjoy the place. The beers are plenty to choose from, and the food is quite good for any burger joint in the country. B&B is a great place to grab a drink and good food for any occasion.

Located in midtown, it just might be some of the best wings you are going to find anywhere. At Hurricanes’ grill and wings, you are going to have a wide selection of sauces to accompany you with your wings.

T

he atmosphere at Hurricanes’’ is light and fun brought on in part by the tropical island décor. The bar is well stocked with top self starts, and the beer is no weak link. In fact the selection is a bit special. At Hurricanes’’ you can get a beer that you will not find anywhere else. It is there Samuel Adams Specialty Brew. It has a great hops note with a full body taste with out the full body feel. After a few sips on that great beer I dove into their wing sampler. The first was the

Category 1, Garlic, Parmesan & Herb that had a crispy outside and moist meat inside. The second was also a Category 1 Teriyaki Glaze baked to juicy perfection. The third was a nice elevation to Category 2 Thai Ginger & Garlic glaze Baked just as good as the last one. To round out the sampler they gave us a Category 3 Gold Rush. It was a enough heat to activate your taste buds and excite your pallet. The wings were fried and the tossed in the Gold Rush sauce that had the flavor or Honey mustard with a

hint of heat. I know I will be going back to take on the next Category of heat, and even have a go at there Category 5, the highest they have. Never the less, I encourage you to try it all out your self, and enjoy their full menu of items they have for your enjoyment. Don’t forget to give their Salads a look at. With items like the Grilled Mahi-Mahi Baja Taco Salad, and the Honey Pecan Chopped Chicken Salad, you might be tempted to make them your whole meal. Or some starters like the world famous

Garlic & Parmesan fries which I can tell you are damn good. From their fresh seafood, Burgers, sandwiches’, which I suggest you, give their Philly a go. Or the fiesta flavors that focus on mainly tacos. I like the variety of the menu, and find it to fit in well with the South Florida crowd. The Wings however, are no doubt the main attraction and rightfully so. With your many choices of sauces in 5 Category of heats and large enjoyable list of beers and beverages you are sure to find with you are looking for.

Anticipation >>>by Alex

To anticipate anything is to have an preformed idea, a predetermined outcome preset in your mind. I hate to anticipate, to take a blind step forward; to build a prejudice about something I have no facts to base it off of. I find it especially bad, when it comes to food, mainly because you are most importantly doing your self an injustice. You are robbing your self of a chance to be surprised, to explore and discover a new flavor combination, or assortment of textures. I am only human, and as much as I fight to not create some expectations of 8oz burger I must admit I had a few. This is what I knew before I walked in. The first being that 8oz beat the national average of restaurants failing in the first year, which is well in the 80%, and are still standing strong. The second being it has a great location that is very accessible, an important factor in any business. Finally the third being, that you can drive past it at almost anytime its open and they are nearly always full. Taking in all these factors it had to guess that it wasn’t just the name that keep the place going, rather it had to be the food. Let me tell you it is

most certainly not just the food. Don’t get me wrong; the food can stand on its own at anytime. What I really was curious about, happened to be the carefully considered beer list. Some of my personal favorites on the beer list are: Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA, Chimay triple White, Left Handed Milke Stout, Left Hand Sawtooth Ale, and Brooklyn Local One just to name a few. Sure they’re not your Bud, and Bud lights, and other well known imports, but to be blunt, forget those. You’re wasting your time sipping on familiarity. I like the adventuress aspect of the

The Mac & Cheese was smooth, rich and cheesy, sort of reminds you of grandmas recipe perhaps... selection. There is at least two beers you have not had ever that I promise you will be hurtled into your top 10. 8oz burger bar fuels the curious and rewards the bold. Feeling even more trusting in the family at 8oz? Well you should, give the Specialty Beer Cocktails a go. Yes, you heard me right, beer cocktails. It’s the philosophy of Eric, the owner,

that these brewers spend years dialing in their product to the point of pure enjoyment. For example, the drink Snake Bit has been around for years. But Eric put his own take on it and let me tell you. One strong pull and you will be rewarded with a flood of Woodchuck amber cider layered with Left Hand Milk Stout. Or the Magic Hat Melon bomb, made with magic hat and midori melon liqueur served bomb style. Being a proper bar that the 8oz is, they have a great selection of top shelf spirits as well. Fancy your self a burger and beer guy or gal, let me tell you this is your church. I started my night with

Poppa E & the E Band

C

The sound of Blues

omposer, multiinstrumentalist and vocalist Big Poppa E is a prominent and influential figure in the late

20th century blues and roots music. Though his career began more than four decades ago with American jazz, he has broadened his artistic scope over the years to include music representing many varied genres. Born Mutasim Ra’id Faisal in New York on May 4, 1948. His father was a jazz pianist, composer and arranger of Caribbean descent, and his mother was a gospel singing schoolteacher from Louisiana. Both parents encouraged their children to take pride in their diverse ethnic and cultural roots. His father had an extensive record collection and a shortwave radio that brought sounds from near and far into the home. Early in his childhood, the young musician learned to play the tenor and alto sax, trombone and harmonica, and he loved to sing. He discovered his father’s guitar and became serious about it in his early teens when a guitarist from Mississippi moved in next door and taught him the various styles of Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Reed and other titans of Delta and Chicago blues. New York in the 1950s was full of recent arrivals, not just from around the U.S. but from all over the globe. “We spoke several dialects in my house – Southern, Caribbean, African – and we heard dialects from eastern and western Europe,” Poppa E recalls. In addition, musicians from the Caribbean, Africa and all over the U.S. frequently visited the Faisal home,

of adventurous recordings, including Blues A Healer, Crossroads and Anthology du Blues. In 2008, Poppa E’s version of Terraplane Blues was nominated by the International Academy of Independent Artist for Best Blues Song of the Year and his album, Blues Healer was nominated for Best Blues Album of the Year by Cash Box Magazine. Poppa E’s recorded output slowed somewhat during the 2010 as he toured relentlessly and immersed himself in the music and culture of his new home in Miami. Still, 2010 saw the well-received release of Big Poppa E Live in 2010, as well as his celebrated children’s album, Children’s Classics on the Black Owl

and Poppa E became even more fascinated with roots – the origins of all the different forms of music he was hearing, what path they took to reach their current form, and how they influenced each other along the way. He threw himself into the study of older forms of AfricanAmerican music – a music that the record companies of the day largely ignored. Musi, as he was affectionately called, studied economics at Syracuse University in the late 1960s and later law at the University of Chicago. Inspired by a dream, he adopted the musical alias of E and later was crowned “Big Poppa E” by one of Miami’s top promoters, DJ Oski. After graduating, he headed west in to Los Angeles, where he worked as a studio musician for the next

15 years for numerous high-profile studios, including Bolic Sound, Motown West and Sussex Records. Around this same time, Poppa E also mingled with various blues legends, including Koko Taylor, Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, and Sleepy John Estes. This diversity of musical experience served as the bedrock for Poppa E’s first three recordings: Southern Style: blues Sessions (2006), Mississippi Reminiscence (2007) and Five Long Years, A Tribute to Carey Bell (2008). Drawing on all the sounds and styles he’d absorbed as a child and a young adult, these early albums showed signs of the musical exploration that would be Poppa E’s hallmark over the next few years. In 2008, Poppa E carved out a unique musical niche with a string

Music label. Poppa E is headed back into the studio in early 2011 to work on a new projected aptly entitled, Bootleggers Blues. As the title suggests, this twelve-track set marks the fortieth anniversary of Poppa E’s rich and varied recording career by mixing original material, chestnuts borrowed from classic sources, and songs written by a cadre of highly talented guest artists from around the globe. “The one thing I’ve always demanded of the records I’ve made is that they be listenable and danceable,” he says. “If the record is danceable, it’s listenable, it has lots of different rhythms, it’s accessible, it’s all right in front of you. It’s a lot of fun, and it represents where I am at this particular moment in my life. This record is just the beginning of another chapter, one that’s going to be open to more music and more ideas. Even at the end of forty years, in many ways my music is just getting started.”

at Tobacco Road There are a few moments in your life when you are standing in one place and feel greatness. You feel like you are apart of something far bigger then your self’s, and that you are going to make a difference. The lights are as bright as the hope in the sky and the smell of the food is as inspiring

as the mission of safe Ta-Tas’. The crowd of support was impressive for an organization focused on combating the ill tragedy of breast cancer. The people of Tobacco Road banded arms and supported a cause that is more then worth supporting. “We are committed to fighting cancer at every stage”,

is the slogan of save the Ta-Tas. They are focused on fighting this cancer “through education, prevention, research, and community support for those struggling with the disease. “ I need to give a shout out to DJ Oski at the Tabacoo road Hodown. He went big for everyone giving us a great mix to

celebrate the fight against breast cancer. Also the people at: Latin burger, The Flying Saucer, The Red koi, Sweetness, Dolci Peccati, and Yuminess inside all came out to support a cause that we all came together to support, did you? Look for your opportunity to support an origination that may affect you or neighbor.

Super 8 Judging by the hype, you might think that Super 8 was an actual companion piece to Amblin movies (E.T., The Goonies, Close Encounters) rather than a result of their inspiration. But that sense of nostalgia

proves claustrophobic in J.J. Abrams’ latest film, an adventure about a group of kids who unwittingly document an extraterrestrial disaster the government is covering up. Thanks to its secretive marketing campaign, anticipation is so high that Super 8 seems destined to score a home run at the box office, but its evocation of ‘80s-era Spielberg may not rally home viewing sales among the post-VHS generation. Newcomer Joel Courtney plays Joe Lamb, a kid in a small Ohio steel town trying to come to terms with the death of his mother. His father Jack (Kyle Chandler), a Deputy Sheriff, would rather serve the community than spend time with his son, so Joe commits himself to his friend Charles’ (Riley Griffiths) student film and enlists 16-year-old Alice (Elle Fanning)—an older woman—to play its leading lady. But after a secret shoot with Charles’ Super 8 camera accidentally captures a spectacular train crash, they

find themselves in the middle of a major conspiracy as Jack tries to solve the mystery of the train’s killer cargo faster than the government can conceal it. Amblin is probably second only to Disney in creating stories about dysfunctional families that find happiness after surviving some fantasy scenario, and the appearance of their moniker over the opening credits only cements the fact Super 8 is trying to draw from the same creative well. But writer/ director J.J. Abrams tackles Super 8 like it’s a time capsule, emphasizing cartoony period details while ignoring the cohesiveness of the stories that came before his. The bigger problem is that Abrams never manages to merge the story of Joe and his dad with the science fiction stuff. It’s in the moments Abrams attempts to combine emotional payoffs with popcorn-style thrills that the film rings most false, like when he means for us to sympathize with a creature clearly capable of large-scale destruction, or in the finale, when he cathartically reunites Joe and Alice with their estranged fathers at the exact same time But it’s certainly not all bad: Abrams’ handling of the burgeoning romance between Joe and Alice is so tender and beautiful that the only disappointment is that there isn’t more of it, and the film the kids make ends up being at least as imaginative, entertaining and emotional as the one that they’re in. With two terrific directorial efforts under his belt (Mission: Impossible III and Star Trek), Abrams is obviously capable of finding the humanity in high-concept entertainment, but his aptitude for making characters compelling outweighs his ability to do so in the context of a cohesive story. (Two

years later, Star Trek’s plot holes are still being discovered even by its most ardent admirers.) And ultimately, nostalgia isn’t enough to sustain this one, because its focus on kids actually betrays the fact that the folks most interested in it will be adults. Super 8 is at best a trip down memory lane, but it’s also a reminder that we reminisce about the movies that inspired it not just because they came at a crucial time in our childhoods, because they were genuinely great. Unfortunately, this one isn’t. Distributor: Paramount Pictures Cast: Joel Courtney, Kyle Chandler, Noah Emmerich, Elle Fanning, Riley Griffiths, Ron Eldard Director/Screenwriter: J.J. Abrams Producers: J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Steven Spielberg Genre: Science Fiction Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, language and some drug use. I began my career in the medical field in Open Heart Surgery and, I also worked for Lifelink with the University of Miami, in Naples, on a Transplant Team. My colleagues knew I was interested in moving to Miami to work at Jackson Memorial Hospital. I always said, if you can work at Jackson Memorial you can make it anywhere. Jackson Memorial is a Level One Trauma Center and is the best trauma center out there.

“Life is too short to live without total pleasure!” After 13-years in the medical field, I moved to Miami to start my own jewelry business in 2009, at the Dolphin Mall from a kiosk. I chose the Dolphin Mall because it is Internationally Friendly and I loved the idea of picking up passengers from the airport and bringing them in the mall. In 2010, an opportunity presented itself and I moved to California, and transferred my business to Sacramento, and opened a small shop there. I worked the

jewelry business during the day and opened Hollywood Sex Toyz and worked that at night. I started with 5,000 items and has grown to 70,000 items that are sold worldwide. I have a global sense and sell outside of the USA and Canada. I’m a member of the National Association of Professional Women (NAPW). I take pride in my products and I love the fact that I’m able to continue helping people overcome a

very sensitive matter. I hope to continue to help others overcome their barriers in life and fulfill their needs. In 2011, I continue to broaden my entrepreneurial skills in Florida and other states in the future. Kimberly’s philosophy: “Life is too short to live without total pleasure!” Thank you for your business! Kimberly Brasseale Hollywood Sex Toyz

Victory Tradeshow Management concluded its tenth EXXXOTICA Expo, as over 20,000 people attended in South Beach at the Miami Beach Convention Center. EXXXOTICA Miami Beach, presented by HotMovies.com, celebrated love and sex, and the six-year expo has become a staple in the SoBe community.

Thousands of returning fans and first time attendees flocked to the convention center despite the high temperatures and impending rapture. Leading national and local media reported from the expo floor, documenting EXXXOTICA’s wide range of seminars, stage shows, contests, exhibitors and adult stars. The media and fan consensus labeled the fan expo as an immense triumph and a rousing success. “EXXXOTICA continues to improve every year, and as a result, we experience overwhelming support from the community of Miami,” said J. Handy, Director of Victory Tradeshow Management. “An increased female focus of attractions made for a much higher percentage of women this year. We spoke with as many female and male attendees as possible, and the feedback was extremely positive. Thank you to all the sponsors and exhibitors who contributed to the overall success of the show. We are looking forward to our next stop, EXXXOTICA Chicago.” MiamiBeach411.com states that the fan

experience was even better at the 2011 expo. Matt Meltzer of the popular South Beach website wrote, “EXXXOTICA is one of the most accessible, carefree, fun events that comes to South Florida every year. Because much like the [adult] industry itself, EXXXOTICA doesn’t take itself too seriously and just wants people to have a good time. And as long as the good folks who run it maintain that attitude, they’ll always be welcome in South Florida.” “A walk on the wild side,” is what Miami’s CBS 4 called EXXXOTICA in its news segment from the convention. The popular piece ran 12 times, while focusing on all the expo offered to fans, from videos and gadgets to celebrities. “People loving love!” “Fun for everyone!” wrote SoulofMiami. org to describe EXXXOTICA’s diverse experience. The roar of female applause filled the convention center when Miami area university students took off their shirts on stage as part of the Shane’s World sponsored “Hottest Frat Dude Contest,” as well as when the Men of Adonis dance troupe performed. Male attendees were thrilled to meet their favorite adult stars and enjoy the famed Ms. EXXXOTICA competition. For couples, the expo offered seminars on improving intimacy, erotic burlesque shows, a concert on the AEBN.net Stage by hip-hop legends 2 Live Crew, and exhibitors with the newest products for bedroom fun. Exhibitors took note of the show’s great attendance. Courtesy of an article in the Miami Herald, erotic artist Fang Ling Lee said, “I used to do shows, galleries, all that stuff—it’s really stale. So I started doing [EXXXOTICA] shows,

and the clients I get are incredible.” “EXXXOTICA Miami was friggin’ awesome,” exclaimed Maxine, CFO of Swipes Lovin Wipes®, an all-natural sex wipe. “As a new company, we had no idea what to expect, but from start to finish, we had a fantastic experience and will definitely be back. We made great contacts, sold out of product every day and created buzz at the show and after-parties. Definitely worth every penny! Thanks EXXXOTICA for welcoming Swipes with open arms… and legs!” Pete Housley, the founder of Naughty Tweet Network, the expo’s social media sponsor, said, “EXXXOTICA Miami 2011 was simply out of control! We had a blast meeting and tweeting with the biggest adult stars in the business.” Dirty Diablos director Dommy B stated, “EXXXOTICA Miami is my favorite adult expo. The talent loves it, too. All the girls love to fly to one of the sexiest places on Earth, meet their fans and pose for pictures.” Vickie of Twisted Cherry, an adult novelty retailer, added, “This weekend at EXXXOTICA was fabulous! We made a ton of money and made a ton of friends. We can’t wait for Chicago!” Attendee Bo Hoppe sums it up best: “Everybody that comes in here is comfortable. The world we live in, the society we live in, makes sex sound dirty. Here, it doesn’t seem like that. It’s not dirty, but more welcoming. This is the kind of convention I am willing to spend money on.” (Courtesy of the Miami Herald.) Concluding its sixth year in South Beach and overall tenth show produced, EXXXOTICA is the largest adult consumer event in the country. EXXXOTICA Miami Beach, Victory Tradeshow Management’s flagship event, was the first show taking place in 2011. Next up is the much-anticipated debut of EXXXOTICA Chicago, which will be July 8-10 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, as well as a return to Los Angeles August 26-28 and the New York/New Jersey Metropolitan area November 4-6. All EXXXOTICA Expos feature “Ladies Free Fridays” where all women are admitted to the show free of charge. Exhibitors interested in securing booth space and sponsorship for the EXXXOTICA Expo should contact Victory Tradeshow Management at info@vtshows.com or call (215) 462-8800. of grandmas recipe perhaps. Just the way you would want it. If they didn’t tell you what it was, you would think it was just a regular burger with more flavor and depth to it. You would find the burger to be lean but still juicy. Its not that turkey burger crap, sorry but for me that’s not a burger, its not an Ostrich burger which I would like to see make a resurgence in the US. What they do have at 8oz is a great Bison burger, also known as a Buffalo. For me it was at this point I could tell there was some real culinary know how being done at 8oz. The Bison burger I had, was anchored by their roasted garlic tomato followed

by the patty cooked exactly to a medium middle temperature and topped by their blue cheese bacon dressing. Each burger place has a signature burger. As much as I’d like it to be the Bison, no bias here, the Smokehouse Burger assuredly take its rightful place as the house special. It’s a no joke, big, full flavor burger. It’s a serious burger that doesn’t take itself serious. The Applewood bacon, aged Cheddar, Lettuce, Tomato, and fried onions with the Smokey BBQ sauce will give you all the reason to love this culinary juggernaut between two buns. To be frank there isn’t much to not like about and for me, I wasn’t able to find anything wrong with it. At this point a little dessert might be your next move, and sure take the normal way out, not me though. I finished my night with a Colorado Car Bomb; made with Left hand milk stout, Baily’s, Bushmills served bomb style. It was full-body, rich and smooth, prefect for an amazing gastro adventure. My hats off to the whole crew at 8oz, they know what they are doing and doing with great pride. I can’t say enough good things about 8oz Burger

Bar, and thankfully they don’t need a bloke like me peddling my words like a cheap trick. The food and drinks do plenty of the talking. So stop on by for either a return or make it your first time, but don’t take my word for it. Go and enjoy your own taste, but hurry before the anticipation begins to build.

A few things to know about 8oz Burger Bar.. Our food takes a little longer than your typical burger joint- we make everything fresh to order just for you, so please don’t expect microwave speed- we don’t have one. No guest is more important than the one waiting before them. Our mothers are the only ones to get the first available seat. The customer is not always right, not in South Beach anyway, we've seen how some people here act. So no matter what car you're leasing from The Collection, you will be treated with love and respect, and we ask you treat us the same in return. If the music's too loud, ask and we'll turn it down. If something is on TV you want to watch, ask and we'll try to find it. No sunglasses at night, save that for Liv or Louis. Need to talk to the owner? Ask for Eric. He is usually in the restaurant, but if he is not, he can be reached on his cell at (786) 3757079. Please feel free to call, text or email eric@8ozburgerbar.com

moment you step foot into Sandbar you know that it is going to be a good night. You instantly feel the energy in the room, on that particular night the energy was at a maximum with the victory by the Heat over the Bulls. There is more to enjoy then the great fans of Miami, the drinks at Sandbar are focused to meet your desire. The food as well is right on par, like D-wade to King James. Light smooth creamy blue cheese dip is a standard at the Sandbar, when ordering their house wings. The hot, fresh made to order appetizers are a great start to a menu that features a variety of selections that include fresh seafood, steak and wonderful chicken. The execution of the food is on point for your favorite local bar, the services is attentive even for the size of the crowd a place like Sandbar attracts. Looking for a gathering of true Heat fans, the search is over. Sandbar is stocked full of fans as well as top shelf drinks and specials. Sandbar is a place where you are taken care of as is if it is your everyday watering hole. Looking or something more up beat, Sandbar has that as well. This bar is flexible and likable. With events as dirty Tuesday’s that drafts a crowd for all walks of south Miami life. Its very hard not to like Sandbar, that is why I give it a 4 star out of 5 for the food the drinks and the atmosphere.

Miami Food Trucks

Thanks to our sunny weather, our mix of many cultures and the availability of large parking lots, Miami has passionately embraced the food truck phenomenon. From single trucks that park next to an office building, to giant cuisine caravans that gather in public parking lots, food trucks are now a permanent part of the Miami landscape. The menus are as varied as Miami’s local population. Cuban hamburgers, gourmet Vietnamese, fish tacos, dim sum, grilled cheese,

gelato – if you’re craving it, you’ll find it served from a truck somewhere in Miami. Social media sites like Twitter and Facebook are the best way to get updates on food trucks’ schedules and whereabouts. Some gatherings have a regularly scheduled time and place. Others are more ad hoc (owing mainly to struggles with code compliance in Miami-Dade County). Miami Beach currently prohibits food trucks, but this may change in the near future. Despite code compliance

issues, Miami food trucks are here to stay. Before you go, be sure to check Facebook or Twitter to make sure the food truck gathering is happening at its usual time and place. Temple OF THE People

www.myamimagazine.com

There are few places in the city that have such a deep rooted and fierce loyalty of followers as the Transit Lounge.

On my particular visit the doorman was rocking a great mustache, the kind that curls up in a loop. For some, this may not be a detail worth noting; for me, this is minute facet of an indicator to the experience of the people, drinks, and fun to be had. Upon the first step in this temple of the people, you notice the amount of space, the openness and freeness you can experience. The bar, as it should be, is right ahead of you when walking in. Anchored by two gatherings of the liquor selection like two beacons of relaxation. Transit lounge attracts those who don’t take them selves to seriously; they don’t worry about the little things in life. They come here to relax, and enjoy the atmosphere, good drinks, and great people. The main room of Transit features a stage for live performance, and a pool table (always a plus). For me this location doesn’t properly hit its stride until you walk out side. You are greeted by the creativity framing the walls that surrounds the property. The graffiti is true art in a captivating raw form. The main stage is on your left when walking into the outside, with the logo of the bar projected behind it, the main outside bar

being at your right and a smaller bar with a grill straight a head. I don’t feel out of place, awkward, or unwanted. On the contrary, I feel very much at home, welcomed and accepted. I have to commend the staff at transit lounge. Each staff member is with a great story and personality, combined making up a team that is always working together while being friendly and social. The kind of people you yourself might want to have a beer with. The music evolves as the moon migrates across the night sky. The music fills the area as the people dance, talk, and drink. If you find your-self hungry the staff has that solution also. The small bar has a grill attached with great food. It brought me back to a cook out in the summer. The hotdogs tasted good due to the house seasonings they add, and the burger doesn’t disappoint. Cook to order to your preferred doneness, and seasoned with the house magic. It all seems to blend together at the transit lounge for me, and maybe that’s why I have this love affair with it. It invokes the sensations that bring me back to my Midwest roots. For me I can say with absolution that I feel deep down that the transit lounge has what it takes to remain the temple of the people.

Additional impressions will be taken after your dentist prepares the abutment teeth for the bridge. During the first visit, your dentist examines the health of your gums and other teeth to evaluate if you are a candidate for a dental bridge. If you are a candidate for a dental bridge, you are given a local anesthetic so your dentist can prepare the teeth required to support the bridge. If the support teeth are decayed or badly broken down, your dentist may have to build them back up before they can be used as support teeth for a bridge. Next, your dentist takes an impression of the prepared teeth with a putty-like material that is used to create a model of your teeth. Your bridge is fabricated based on this model by a skilled lab technician so that it precisely fits the prepared teeth. It is important that your restoration fit perfectly to avoid

While your bridge is being fabricated, your dentist fits you with a temporary bridge so the teeth and gums can be protected from damage until your permanent bridge is ready. To complete the dental bridge procedure, you must return to the dental office for a second visit to have the bridge fitted and cemented. After your dental bridge has been cemented into place, your dentist will provide you with hygiene information to maintain the performance and longevity of your restoration, along with the health of your teeth and gums. A special bridge floss threader will allow you to properly and thoroughly floss the areas surrounding your bridge and between the pontic and underlying gum tissue. It should be used daily to prevent the build-up of plaque and bacteria. Proper brushing with fluoride toothpaste should be performed at least twice each day.

Become a better version of yourself >> by Stephanie Carrero At some point in all of our lives we let ourselves go for various reasons and when we want to get back on track its not only difficult but at times feels impossible. Not to worry my fellow readers, I created a guideline that will help individuals toward a healthier and happier lifestyle. As you roll out of bed, start off your morning saying 3 good things about yourself out loud as you look in the mirror. I know this might sound foolish but it will bring a smile to your face and is a great way to start off the day. First thing in the morning before breakfast, drink an 8 ounce glass of water with squeezed lemon or lime. This will eliminate the retained water weight in your body. An early morning stretch for about 10 minutes will help you start off a stress free day and will help you make healthier decisions throughout the day. FRUITS!! During the day its great to eat fruits as snacks not only are they healthy but they are delicious!! Throw those Doritos, Snickers, and junk food out the door and eat something fresh like an apple, watermelon, or strawberry. Remember the saying you are what you eat! Wouldn’t you rather be as fresh as a cucumber instead of a greasy fried onion ring? Think about it. • Vitamins are extremely important! • Vitamin B-12: great for a boost of energy; • Vitamin C: great for the immune system and helps in preventing the common cold. • Vitamin D: essential for women because we tend to lose vitamin D as we age. • Vitamin E: incredible for healthy skin. • Biotin: great for skin, nails, and hair. These vitamins are not only essential to add to your lifestyle but also helps retain from overeating.

Try not adding salt and sugar to your food. If you must use sugar, use natural brown sugar. Do not use any artificial sugars such as, Splenda and Sweet and Low. Drink tons of water! Even trainers with incredible physiques take a gallon of water with them everyday! Not a gym person? That’s fine go for a walk in the park or take a stroll by the beautiful beaches of Miami. My friend lost 25 pounds by just walking 1 hour a day 5 times a week in 3 months. If you enjoy going to the gym workout at least 3 times a week: * Before any workout stretch and warm up for 15 mins. Day 1 -Work on arms, biceps and triceps Day 2 -Work on legs and lower body Day 3- Work on chest and back * Add core each day * After working out with weights do 30 minutes of cardio: bike, elliptical (actually works you out more then the treadmill), and if you do decide to use the treadmill put it on INCLINE (this is good for your gluteus maximus). *Make sure you always do weights before cardio. Dance!! Go out on a girl’s night and dance, dance, dance!! Or for more exciting workouts take Zumba classes or try dance workout videos. Weigh yourself every week and keep track of your progress, set a goal and work towards it. Massages are not only relaxing but help sculpt the body it helps alleviate lower back pain, improves circulation and are great for tight and sore muscles. Sauna’s open your pores and release toxins in your body which is great for the skin, and stimulates the functions of other organs. These are a few tips I created to help guide you to a healthier version of yourself. However, most importantly you must learn to love yourself and who you are. Embrace your flaws as well as your beauty because it’s the flaws that makes us unique and gives us a little character.

Cholesterol

Your body needs some cholesterol. But if you have too much—of the wrong kind—it starts to build up in your arteries. Cholesterol is produced naturally by the liver, and also comes from eating certain foods, such as eggs and red meat. Too much of the bad kind, LDL cholesterol, raises your risk of heart disease, stroke, and other conditions. Low levels of the good kind, HDL cholesterol, can have the same effect. 7 Causes of High Cholesterol Do you have high cholesterol? You’re not alone—so do about 100 million other Americans. High cholesterol comes from a variety of sources, including your family history and what you eat. Here is a visual journey through the most common causes. Your diet Eating too much saturated fat (like the kind found in this classic breakfast) can cause high cholesterol. You will find this unhealthy fat in foods that come from animals. Beef, pork, veal, milk, eggs, butter, and cheese contain saturated fat. Packaged foods that contain coconut oil, palm oil, or cocoa butter may have a lot of saturated fat. You will also find saturated fat in stick margarine, vegetable shortening, and most cookies, crackers, chips, and other snacks. Your weight Your beer belly isn’t just bad for your social life. Being

overweight may increase triglycerides and decrease HDL, or good cholesterol. Losing that gut can go a long way toward improving your beach bod, too. Your activity level Hey, get off that couch and get moving. Lack of physical activity may increase LDL, or bad cholesterol, and decrease HDL, or good cholesterol Your age and gender After you reach age 20, your cholesterol levels naturally begin to rise. In men, cholesterol levels generally level off after age 50. In women, cholesterol levels stay fairly low until menopause, after which they rise to about the same level as in men. Your overall health Don’t skip your annual physical, and be sure to have your doc explain your heart disease risk. Having certain diseases, such as diabetes or hypothyroidism, may cause high cholesterol. Your family history Aren’t they cute? But they can be dangerous, even when they’re not gossiping about each other. If family members have high cholesterol, you may also. Cigarette smoking Come on, you already know this one. Smoking can lower your good cholesterol. And it can kill you. So why not quit smoking

The dangers of artificial food colors Citrus Red 2, Red 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2 and Green 3, --which include some of the most commonly used artificial food colorings-have all been identified as being, or being contaminated with, potential cancer-causing chemicals, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. And Blue 1, Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 are known to trigger reactions in those with allergies. History paints an ugly food color portrait.

Until the twentieth century, food coloring could only be obtained from what people found in nature. Ancient Romans used saffron and other spices to put a rich yellow color into various foods Other frequently used natural colors included paprika, turmeric, beet extract, and petals of various flowers. But many of the other frequently used natural colors were not only unappetizing, but downright dangerous Bakers added chalk to whiten bread, for example, and sweets

manufacturers loaded candy with vermilion (which contains mercury), red lead, white lead, verdigris (which is a copper salt), blue vitriol (which contains copper) and Scheele’s green (which contains both copper and arsenic). The science of food coloring evolved from there and technology created a new kind of dye derived from coal tar, a waste product of coal gas and coke. The synthetic dyes came to be known at coal-tar colors and they are what we still use

today. By the beginning of the 20th century, some 695 of these had been synthesized, and over 80 were on the market. While they were generally a safer alternative to metal salts and used in less quantity, they were still unregulated. In 1938, responsibility for regulating and enforcing color was granted to the newly instituted Food and Drug Administration. At that point, there were 15 synthetic colors approved for use in foods, 6 of which are still used today.
