Christina Khin Tun

My name is Christina Khin Tun (သဲထြဋ္ခင္ထြန္း). I was born in Arcadia, raised between the lines of both Duarte-Monrovia, and as a junior, I presently attend Monrovia High School, a place I consider a close home. My parents, who were both born and raised in Yangon, Myanmar, immigrated from their hometown to where we live now, California, US.

Q2) What are your performances/ good credentials/ volunteering works for your school and for the Burmese community?

Some things I’m currently involved in are Renaissance/ASB, Math And Science Academy, MASA Mentors, Mandarin Club, Key Club, CSF Club, Interact Club, SpyderLab, Envision: Medicine, along with DSA Live Tv Broadcast. Although for the Burmese community, I’ve been participating in events such as the “A Sunny Day” musical, the Net Myanmar Association, Thingyan festivals, and the reception supporting Congresswoman Judy Chu.

Q3) Who are your biggest influences?

My biggest influence or a person I aspire to be like would be my parents. Both my mom and dad provided me with a strong base in aspects of both social and academics. They raised me and helped me build on my strengths as well as encouraged me to try new things that I didn't wanna explore but then liked it. My mom is the one who mainly powers my academics. When I was little, I used to procrastinate a lot. She would sit with me at the table to help me solve adding and subtracting problems in elementary at night. I would pretend to fall asleep sometimes because I found math boring then and my mom would wake me up telling me that I have to complete it. I’d say her way of encouragement is mainly towards the idea of being limitless and giving everything a shot before ditching it. My dad is the one who powers my stabil ity and openminded towards others. During our car rides to school, sometimes I would wake up cranky and moody. Waking up to go to zero-period pe class early in the morning was not what the average person ideally likes. My dad had to put up with me every day and yet, still found a way to make me love those car rides before and after school regardless of how my day went. His way of support is comforting and neutral. Both parents' influence on my life has made my thinking and mindset change in comparison from when I was little to

Q4)now.Future goals?

Some personal aspirations are self-growth, selfsatisfaction, and feeling passionate about my future career while some academic aspirations are to become valedicto rian when I graduate high school, go to my dream school, UCSD, and majoring in chemistry and biology since those are my top 2 favorite subjects.

Q5) How much do you know about your country? Have you been to Myanmar? If so, list some favorite places, things, or memories.

I've been fortunate to accompany my mother to her hometown of Myanmar since I was a child. During our visits, I stayed at my grandmother's house, and to be honest, I loved the mosquito nets. I used to fantasize myself going camping in those nets. Me and my mom would walk to stores outside of the house and I remem ber being terrified of going between cars in traffic. It was a little scary, but it was a memorable experience for me. And, of course, the cuisine was delicious. If I had to pick a dish, “Llehpet Thoke” would be the one. For dessert, “Falooda” is my true love. Although me and my mom stayed in Yangon most of the time, we did get to reach out to other parts of Myanmar such as Bagan and Mandalay with my aunt. The buildings in Bagan were ones I’d never seen before and the structure of Bagan amazed me. Hot air balloons were flying in the air when I visited Bagan and it seemed fun but unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to ride one. It will for sure be on my to-do list when I get to visit again. In Mandalay, I got to visit some family members and got to go with them to the Jade Pagoda, King Palace. Overall, going to Myanmar is an experience that will stick with me. Unfortunately, I haven't been in a long time due to the ongoing covid and the present status of Myanmar. I do hope, however, that the people of Myanmar will thrive throughout this moment and be able to regain freedom.

Q6) Are you proud of being an American Youth? How so?

As an American Youth, I am proud of be ing able to be part of communities that are welcoming and also contributive. With our generation, a lot has changed from child hood to adulthood. The events in the past 2 years have been somewhat unexpected and for communities to have overcome that and try to live similar to daily life, I’m proud.Q7)A message you want to share with the younger generation of Bur meseLookAmericans.afteryourselves, the younger generation of Burmese Americans, or whoever is reading this. You have or should have influence over your life. Take advantage of possibilities for self-development and do it for your self; romanticize life. If feeling over whelmed by the amount of pleasing people, it is necessary to take care when undertaking things. There will always be times when we are caught in negative events or memories, but there is always a way out. Find a common ground or mentality to help you through the day, and be appreciative of everything that has happened to you, good or bad. <3

But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy become to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words, a truth this horrifying would make it impos sible for him to continue to love her.

Verity wouldn’t truly be considered as a romance-based novel to me, but a story filled with suspense, and bone-chilling plot twists. Actually, it’s hard to even place Verity in a specific genre of books; a lot of psychological thrillers, romance, suspense, and even the topic of crime played a major role throughout the book. The overall ending was something I had not expected at all, but left me with a strong aftertaste when I finished reading each chapter. The book was captivating and it took me a good ten minutes to process everything that happened at the end of the book. I have a strong

feeling that anyone who finishes the book late at night will instantly hop on the closest device near them and search up, “Verity Manuscript or Letter?” It was certainly the first thing I did after giving ten minutes to myself to truly digest everything. I wouldn’t recommend reading this novel late at night because of the way Colleen Hoover described most of the scenes. Throughout the book, each scene felt very realistic and unsettling, but made me even more curious about flipping over to the next page. The one thing that left me with a certain level of doubt throughout the book was how the husband, Jeremy Crawford was shown and described; he is de scribed as a loving and caring dad, and a romantic, charming husband to his wife, Verity Crawford. In the end, we see that he uncovers the dark secrets behind Verity and what she truly thinks of her life, her kids, and her husband. I didn’t enjoy how Jeremy and Lowen’s relationship developed over the small amount of time it started. It felt wrong to read, as Jeremy’s wife was clearly in critical condition after the accident and how he was still a husband and father. The relationship could’ve de veloped over a longer period of time instead. The romance throughout the story was rocky and way too rushed for my liking, and I person ally didn’t enjoy it compared to Colleen Hoover’s other books. As a psychological thriller and suspense genre enthusiast, I absolutely loved reading the book besides its rushed romance and turning each page made my jaw drop every few sec onds reading between each word, letter, and line.
