Get your bearings– Exploring the Myrtle Beach Area The Myrtle Beach area’s 60-mile coast has 12 unique communities, each with its own individual style. Check as many as you can off of your list during your next vacation and enjoy the variety of South Carolina’s Grand Strand and all it has to offer. Little River is our northernmost community, and visitors will find life moves at a slower pace in this small fishing village. The historic waterfront is home to the popular Blue Crab Festival, as well as a favorite place to watch the fishing fleet come in with the days’ catch. Home of the shag, the South Carolina state dance, North Myrtle Beach is actually a group of
6
four smaller communities joined along a nine mile stretch of beach. In the middle of North Myrtle Beach, Atlantic Beach, also known as the “Black Pearl,” is a town molded by the Gullah-Geechee culture and home to several annual festivals. At the heart of the Grand Strand lies Myrtle Beach, offering beautiful beaches and shopping for everyone from bargains to boutiques and endless entertainment. Known as the “family beach,” Surfside Beach’s hometown atmosphere offers fishing, festivals and fun in the sun.

A little farther south in Murrells Inlet, a sunset stroll along the Marshwalk is the perfect way to enjoy the spectacular beauty of the area. Elegant, upscale Litchfield Beach is dotted with golf courses, one-of-a-kind boutiques and wide beaches. Just down the road lies historic Pawleys Island, once the summer home to wealthy, pre-Civil War rice planters.
Find out why the East Coast’s oldest summer resort calls itself “arrogantly shabby.” Conway, just a short drive inland, is fast becoming a mecca for local artists and craftsmen. This historic riverside town offers festivals and artwalks as well as a look back into the history of Horry County. Loris is known not only for its friendliness, but for the popular Bog-Off Festival. If you’ve never tried chicken bog, you’re in for a treat. Continue celebrating country living in Aynor, home to the Harvest Hoe-Down Festival.

Pawleys Island
Where Life Moves a little Slower Found at the southernmost end of the Myrtle Beach area, Pawleys Island is one of the oldest vacation spots on the East Coast beginning as the summer home to wealthy pre-Civil War rice planters looking for escape from the heat and disease-carrying mosquitoes. Some of these homes are still intact and historical markers throughout the small island provide historical background. Residents and visitors alike proudly call Pawleys Island “arrogantly shabby” and revel in its simplicity and natural beauty. The community of Pawleys Island boasts a bevy unique shops and restaurants and its slower pace encourages hours of hammock relaxation. Beach houses have been passed down through the generations, and according to Pawleys Island resident Josh Quigley, the community is “old school and proud of it.” From this leisurely existence, Pawleys Island has developed its laid back, shoeless lifestyle. An afternoon crabbing in the creek, followed by a feast of the day’s catch is the kind of beautifully simple day that entices visitors year after year. HammockCoastSC.com

Litchfield Beach Lovely, Unspoiled and Subtly Sophisticated
Long walks on wide beaches erase the cares of visitors to Litchfield Beach. Quiet and reserved, Litchfield Beach’s sophisticated appeal includes world-class golf courses, fine dining and a slightly urban feel. Beaches are more sparsely populated here, and the natural beauty of sand and sea oats takes center stage. Established in 1978, this popular unincorporated beach community took its name from Litchfield Plantation, a lovely rice plantation on the Waccamaw River. Runners, walkers and bikers enjoy Waccamaw Neck Bikeway that is part of the East Coast Greenway, finding no better way to experience the sights and sounds of this beautiful area. HammockCoastSC.com

Murrells Inlet The Great Outdoors
Murrells Inlet has so much to offer to those who love the outdoors. The Marshwalk offers spectacular views and a chance to watch fishing boats come in with the days’ catch. Thrill seekers will relish opportunities to parasail, ride a banana boat or drive a jet ski. Both the young and young at heart will have a swashbuckling good time on pirate-themed boat tours that bring Murrells Inlet’s history of pirates and adventurers to life. Known world-wide for its beauty, Brookgreen Gardens showcases its extensive American sculpture collection with the best nature has to offer. Known as “the seafood capital of South Carolina,” there’s a delicious dinner waiting after a busy, fun-filled day. This fishing village has a boating experience for every taste, from kayaking at sunrise to a day-long, chartered deep sea fishing excursion to the Gulf Stream. For those who like to cook their own seafood, local markets offer the freshest selection of shrimp, fish, oysters and crabs. After dark, things get lively along the Marshwalk, with live music streaming from
several establishments. The lively music, plus the delicious smell of cooking seafood, makes it nearly impossible not to stop and enjoy the fun. Founded by Archer and Anna Huntington in 1931, Brookgreen Gardens was their gift to the community they loved. Today it is a National Historic Landmark with one of the world’s most significant collections of figurative sculpture by American artists in an outdoor setting. Visitors will always find something in bloom, no matter what the season, and the zoo offers an up close look at local wildlife. Directly across the highway lies Huntington Beach State Park, originally a part of the Huntington’s estate and now a must-see for the serious bird watcher. This 2500-acre park also offers ocean-side camping, fishing and nature programs along the three miles of beach and hundreds of acres of salt marsh. This was also the summer residence of the Huntington’s and their castle-inspired home, Atalaya, is open for exploration daily. Whether up-close or at a distance, an encounter with nature is waiting in Murrells Inlet. Enjoy the great outdoors! MurrellsInletSC.com VisitMyrtleBeach.com

Surfside Beach Proudly Known as “The Family Beach” It’s all about families in Surfside Beach where visitors will find activities to please all ages. By the time the town was incorporated in 1964, the quiet, clean community had already established its reputation as a family beach. In the early 1800s, much of what is now Surfside Beach was owned by John Tillman and called The Ark Plantation, where the main crop produced was sweet potatoes. The original plantation house stood until the middle of the 20th century. Pristine, beautiful beaches are cleaned daily and supervised by lifeguards and police. Several beach access points offer showers and restrooms, as well as handicapped accessible ramps. This ecofriendly beach encourages beach-goers to recycle by collecting cans, bottles and newspapers. The Surfside Beach Pier is perfect for sunset walks over the water or enjoying Sunday Serenades, a summer concert series. Fishermen interested in casting a line will find equipment rentals and bait available in the pier’s tackle shop. Originally
10
built in 1953, this pier has been rebuilt at least three times, most recently in March of 1993. Visitors can enjoy a game of tennis, bocce, shuffleboard and much more at one of the town’s seven public parks. All Children’s Park has playground equipment made especially for those with physical handicaps. The newest park, Passive Park, sits beside the public library and offers a place to enjoy the beauty of nature in quiet contemplation. Miniature golf courses offer hours of fun in Surfside, and for those who want a day out of the sun, there is still a lot to do. Enjoy a game of billiards or perfect a strike at the local bowling alley. For heart-stopping, fast paced excitement visit the local water park, which also features bumper boats, a race track, go carts and more. No matter the season, there’s always something fun to do in Surfside Beach. Generations of families return year after year making memories that last a lifetime. SurfsideBeach.org

Myrtle Beach The Hub of the Grand Strand From relaxing on the shore to unbelievable shopping, exciting rides and attractions, and sizzling night life, opportunities for the perfect vacation are endless in Myrtle Beach. An urbane cultural scene brings it all together, making Myrtle Beach an ideal, oceanfront vacation destination. Now a thriving metropolis, Myrtle Beach began as a getaway for employees of the lumber industry in Conway who would take the train to “New Town” on their free weekends. The area continued to grow until its incorporation in 1957. A contest to name the town resulted in “Myrtle Beach,” inspired by the area’s prolific Southern Wax Myrtle shrubs. Today, visitors have nearly unlimited opportunities for entertainment in Myrtle Beach. For beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean, take a leisurely stroll down the oceanfront boardwalk or enjoy a ride on the new, 200-foot SkyWheel. Riding the waves on a boogie board is just the thing to cool off on a hot afternoon as is visiting one of the area’s water parks with slides, wave pools and fountains. Visit up close and personal with some of the ocean’s most
interesting inhabitants at Myrtle Beach’s aquarium or see what a 70 mph hurricane wind feels like in the new interactive science museum. And nothing says summer like an afternoon of baseball at BB& T Coastal Field, home of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. For those who love to be active, Myrtle Beach’s state park offers maritime forests and unspoiled beachfront for camping, hiking, biking and nature programs for all ages. Anglers can throw a line off of local fishing piers, while the more adventurous may want to give Jet Skiing or parasailing a try. Art and music lovers will enjoy a visit to the area’s art museum, located near the ocean and featuring world class exhibits year round, or a concert by the area’s well-known symphony. Nothing beats the night life in Myrtle Beach, with its comedy clubs, music ranging from country to disco, and popular dancing spots, while exciting dinner shows featuring pirates and medieval knights make nights out with the family times to remember. Generations of Fun
Where Past Meets Present
Located directly south of Surfside Beach, Garden City Beach stretches south to the mouth of Murrells Inlet and straddles the county line between Horry and Georgetown counties. Year after year, the same families return to this small beach community for their beach vacation. The heart of Garden City Beach is the Pier, which boasts live music at night and an angler’s paradise during the day. Arcades filled with the whirls and jingles of games intermixed with the laughter of the players are a favorite stop for those ready to have fun after a day of play in the sun. Lighthearted, family-friendly celebrations are held throughout the year, such as the Fourth of July golf cart parade. The inlet meets the ocean in Garden City Beach, and on the marsh side visitors find spectacular sunsets and restaurants serving fresh seafood. A stroll along the creek walk is a relaxing way to end the day. On the southern end of Garden City Beach, a marina offers boaters safe harbor and an interesting place for visitors to have dinner while enjoying the peace found where water meets land. VisitMyrtleBeach.com
In the early 1930s, when African-Americans were restricted by segregation laws, Atlantic Beach, also known as the “Black Pearl,” was formed as a vacation getaway for AfricanAmerican families. It became a popular vacation destination, and black-owned businesses thrived in this small community nestled in the heart of North Myrtle Beach. Many residents are descendants of the Gullah-Geechee people, former slaves from the West Coast of Africa who lived and worked in the coastal area from around Jacksonville, Fla., to Wilmington, N.C. Today, residents of Atlantic Beach are working to preserve the rich heritage and traditions of their community. An annual festival celebrates the Gullah-Geechee culture with food, music and dancing. 843-663-2284

north Myrtle Beach Home of the Shag
The area now known as North Myrtle Beach has a rich history that began well before Europeans appeared. Originally the part-time home and retreat of the Waccamaw and Winyah Native American tribes, they called the coast, “Chicora,” meaning “the land.” The Spanish explored the area in the 1500s, and by the 1700s, what is now known as Cherry Grove was a successful indigo plantation, as well as the occasional home of the notorious pirate Blackbeard. Today, North Myrtle Beach is a thriving area and a favorite among tourists. In 1968, four existing communities, Cherry Grove, Windy Hill, Ocean Drive and Crescent Beach were combined to form the city. Throughout the year, festivals celebrate everything from St. Patrick’s Day to the end of summer. Sounds of beach music can be heard in the Ocean Drive section nearly every night as those who love the state dance, the shag, slip and slide the night away.
An oceanfront amusement park on Main Street offers classic rides and amusements to please all ages, along with free summer concerts throughout the season in nearby McLean Park. Reptiles rule at a sanctuary that houses alligators, snakes and lizards. Beautiful beaches, fishing piers, boating and the world’s largest waterslide offer plenty of outdoor fun.Finding treasures and souvenirs are an exciting addition to any vacation. Well known for its wide variety of shopping, North Myrtle Beach has an eclectic array of outlet stores, malls, quirky flea markets and unusual boutiques. After a day spent enjoying all that North Myrtle Beach has to offer, gorgeous sunsets herald the end of daylight, and the beginning of a nightlife filled with excitement. Live theater, variety shows, dance clubs and more are part of the fun in North Myrtle Beach. The diversity of North Myrtle Beach guarantees something for everyone to enjoy. Little River
Preserving the Past
Where Life Slows Down
Set on the banks of the beautiful Waccamaw River lies the town of Conway. One of the oldest towns in South Carolina, Conway is the county seat of Horry County (pronounced O-ree), and has all the charm and grace of an older Southern town. Tree-lined streets run through the picturesque historic district of Conway, inviting visitors to stay and learn more. Visitors to the L.W. Paul Living History Farm will have the opportunity to participate in the activities of the everyday life of a farm family living in Horry County between 1900-1955. A visit to the county museum, followed by a guided tour through the historic district is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. The charming downtown area has lovely historic architecture that houses unique shops, a thriving art community and interesting restaurants. Top it off with a stroll on the Riverwalk for a perfect day in historic Conway. ConwaySCChamber.com
This small fishing village, located in the northernmost part of the Myrtle Beach area, provides a relaxing, laid back destination for travelers. Little River has been inhabited since the establishment of its first trading post in the 1700s and provides adventures on both land and sea. Jet Ski and boat rentals are available on the waterway while deep sea fishing charters leave with the sunrise, taking anglers to some of the best fishing spots on the coast. Shorter fishing and party boat cruises are also available daily, and evening trips on casino boats offer excitement and fun. Land lovers can enjoy a sunset stroll on the live oak-lined historic waterfront as commercial fishing boats come in, bringing fresh seafood to satisfy diners at local restaurants and seafood markets. Little River’s annual Blue Crab Festival, held every May, is a 30 year-long tradition attracting thousands to a weekend of live music, arts and crafts, and seafood, and October’s Shrimp and Jazz Festival never fails to impress. A Taste of Southern Hospitality
A Small Town With Much to Offer
Incorporated in 1913, the small town of Aynor once had a bustling tobacco market, as well as a cotton gin, brickyard and several mills. Located 35 miles inland on Highway 501, this friendly community is known as “Little Golden Town.” September brings the Harvest Hoe Down Festival to Aynor where country living is celebrated with food, games, music and fun for the entire family. The historic Hagood House, built in the 1920s, has been restored and is operated as a bed and breakfast, as well as a restaurant, offering visitors a charming way to enjoy Southern hospitality. Each November, the Native American Waccamaw tribe holds their annual Pauwau on tribal grounds just outside of Aynor. Festivities include tribal dance and demonstrations of the rich culture and heritage of the tribe. AynorChamber.org
Visitors driving to the northern end of the Myrtle Beach area will pass through the small inland town and close-knit community of Loris on Highway 9. The community began in the 1880s as a railroad town to service the local lumber industry and became the first town in the state to have its own newspaper, high school, bank, telephone system and doctor. Today, a revitalized downtown makes for a great stop off the beaten path, offering quaint shopping, dining and southern hospitality. The local farmers market is a feast of fresh produce, home baked goods and arts and crafts, and the nearby Waccamaw River is home to a wide array of wildlife and the local environmental education center’s annual Forever Wild Swampfest. On the third Saturday of every October, Loris hosts the Great Loris Bog-Off Festival. The daylong event celebrates this Southern favorite dish of rice, chicken and sausage with a day of fun and festivity that attracts more than 25,000 people each year. The Bog-Off competition brings out the best area cooks, and visitors come prepared to sample a variety of seasonings and secret ingredients in this savory local dish. My Myrtle Beach
Visitors Recall Their Favorite Myrtle Beach Area Vacation Memories 38 years ago when we were first married, my husband and my best friend and her husband started taking our vacation together. We would rent a beach house in Surfside (No air conditioning, pool, dish washer, washer & dryer, television or phone), but we loved it. Each year, we would rent another house. Then we both had two children, so we moved up to a condo. Later the boyfriends and girlfriends had to come, then it was their husbands and my son’s wife. We were now at 10 of us, so we moved to a bigger condo. Eight years ago the grandchildren started being born so now we are up to 16. We still love Myrtle Beach! Our families haven’t missed a year in the last 38 years of being together for that one week of vacation. We still love it just as much today as then.
2009 was the first time we vacationed in Myrtle Beach. It exceded our expectations.. The resort that we stayed at was great, very kid friendly. There was so much to do and see in Myrtle Beach. We loved everything about it. The water temperature was outstanding...no need to get used to the cold ocean water, because in Myrtle Beach the water is simply just warm!! We loved it so much, we are returning again this year!! It was an awesome vacation destination for our entire family....Can’t wait till summer!! - The Polanowski Family Wilkes Barre, PA

MyrtLE BEaCh MEMOriEs
es My favorite Myrtle Beach memory was in 2008. My son Dominic was six-years-old. We rented a shark charter. My son loves to fish, and we both are shark lovers. That morning we set off for the big hunt. There were six of us on the boat, but I only knew my son. One of the couples told me that the only reason they went on the trip was because they wanted to see him catch a shark. As the morning went on, everyone had a turn to reel in some large sharks. When it came to my son, he hooked a 150lbs 6 foot Dusky shark. He was able to fight with me helping for about 5-10 minutes. Then I had to reel the rest of the way and I almost couldn’t do it. But we landed the shark and took a picture before they released it. Later that day, we went to Broadway and to a shop where you can build your own remote control car. After spending hours at the shops at Broadway we finally ventured back to our condo in Garden City. As we were getting ready for bed, my son looked at me and said “Dad this was the greatest day in my life.” These words from my six-year-old brought tears to my eyes. Two years later, I still hear him tell me the stories of that day and he still believes that day was the best day of his life. Thanks Myrtle Beach for giving my son and I memories that we will never forget!
It is difficult to identify just one Myrtle Beach area memory. My family regards Myrtle Beach as our personal “Zanadoo.” A retreat of sorts-where we go to “get grounded” and re-connect as a family. To my family and I, Myrtle Beach is an almost spiritual experience that we must complete at least once a year, regardless of the economic climate. If I had to pick just one experience however, it would be the Pelicans season opener in 2009. The environment that night was magical; the weather was great, the family was there, and the seats were awesome. - The Watrous Family Utica, NY

There is plenty to do indoors in the Myrtle Beach area. The new Wonderworks Science Center is filled with excitement, including a flight simulator and the chance to experience hurricane force winds. For the young and young at heart, a visit to the Children’s Museum of South Carolina offers interactive exhibits that both educate and entertain. the most discriminating art enthusiast. Summertime brings baseball and a chance to eat peanuts and crackerjacks at BB& T Coastal Federal Field, home of The Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Fireworks displays can be found weekly throughout the area, a sure bet to please a crowd. Outdoor concerts abound and most are free, but be sure to bring a lawn chair. Opportunities for play are endless in the Myrtle Beach area. If you would rather be on the water than in it, take advantage of one of our many boat tours. It is easy to find the perfect way to set sail, from banana boats to tours that take you down winding

rivers past plantations that once were the center of a wealthy rice culture. Other ocean bound tours give visitors up close and personal encounters with an amazing array of wildlife, including dolphins and maybe even bald eagles. Abundant fishing is another exciting option, from day-long deep sea charters to short trips that stay closer to shore. There are plenty of ways to play after dark – some are exciting and fun, but for the brave and adventurous, mysterious and scary ghost tours, offered seasonally, provide a thrill that might keep you wondering – is it real? Local storytellers weave rich (and sometimes frightening) tales of “haints
and hags” that go bump in the night, bringing the rich history of our area to life. Local theaters offer a dazzling array of live music and dinner shows highlighting world class talent. For swashbuckling fun, try the new pirate adventure dinner show. Love to dance? Nightclubs featuring a variety of music from country to disco are just waiting for you to cut a rug. Or maybe a visit to the north end of the Myrtle Beach area to dance the shag would suit you better? Whatever your taste, the Myrtle Beach area has plenty of places to play. And, isn’t that what vacation is all about?

A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK
Brookgreen Gardens
Connects Nature, History, and Art!
T
he lady standing at the brochure rack said to her husband, “Let’s go to Brookgreen Gardens today. We haven’t been there in years and they’ve added a lot of new things and I think the kids will enjoy it. “ What they found is a place where art, history, and the natural world merge seamlessly, a place where both adults and children rediscover and reconnect with nature. Open daily, this National Historic Landmark offers boat rides, overland excursions, a Children’s Discovery Room, interactive animal programs,
and a new Butterfly House. These programs will shed light not only on the sculpture, plants, and animals seen at Brookgreen but also on the rich history of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Set within 9,100 acres, this place is Brookgreen Gardens and for more than 80 years visitors have come to treasure the beauty of the gardens, the outstanding collection of art, and the animals in their native habitats. So, like the lady standing at the brochure rack, make plans today to see what makes Brookgreen Gardens ever changing and simply amazing.

Tips for Swimming Safely Play It Safe With These 10 Safety Tips for Ocean Swimmers • Swim in an area with a lifeguard • Swim with a buddy • Swim sober • Don’t fight the current (signal for help) • Don’t float where you can’t swim • Watch small children closely • Don’t dive into the surf (protect your neck) • Leash your boogie board or surfboard • Ask a lifeguard about ocean water conditions • Look for, read and obey all beach safety flags (yellow, lifeguard on duty; blue, aquatic danger; red, no swimming allowed)
If caught in a rip tide: 1. Don’t fight the current 2. Swim out of the current, then in to shore 3. If you can’t escape, float or tread water 4. If you need help, call or wave for assistance
Your Guide to Beach Safety in the Myrtle Beach Area Clean and Safe Water The health and safety of residents and visitors are of the highest importance to the municipalities in the Myrtle Beach area. To ensure that area beach water is clean and safe, a voluntary beach water monitoring program is underway in cooperation with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. During the summer months, the surf is regularly tested. If unacceptable levels of bacteria are detected, the area affected is posted with an advisory.

The possibility of pollutants in ocean water is greatest after a heavy rain, when runoff from lawns and streets can pick up fertilizer, pesticides and trash. Swimming immediately after a rainstorm and playing in shallow tidal pools or in the water discharging from storm drainage pipes should be avoided. Swimming in contaminated water may result in minor illnesses such as sore throats or diarrhea. Natural organisms can affect anyone with certain existing health problems.

But, there are many other ways to enjoy the water whether you’re a daredevil sportsman or just want to learn more about what lives in the water. The Myrtle Beach area is surrounded by water – in addition to the gorgeous Atlantic there is the Intracoastal Waterway, rivers and inlets. Beautiful sunset cruises are perfect for relaxing and seeing the sights or try a shell hunting trip on a slow moving pontoon boat. Nature cruises are perfect for dolphin sighting, and for those looking for speed and thrills, speeding above the water on an airboat is a ride not soon forgotten! These are just a few of the ways to enjoy the waters of the Myrtle Beach area. Want to test your stamina with an extreme sporting adventure? Myrtle Beach Boardwalk & Promenade– The Best Mile on the Beach Welcome to the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk! Stretching from the Second Avenue Pier to the 14th Avenue Pier, the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is home to festivals and events all summer long including Ocean Boulevard’s Hot Summer Nights at Plyler Park, located in the heart of the downtown area. Highlights of Hot Summer Nights include: Live Concerts on Tuesdays and Saturdays A “Kids Carnival” on Monday nights featuring inflatables, bounce houses, face painters, jugglers, balloon artists, stilt walkers and more! Wednesday night features an amazing fireworks display off the 2nd Avenue Pier. Sunday nights feature juggling, acrobatics, a fire show, stilt walkers, human statues and more! Thursday features a strolling bagpiper on the Boardwalk and on Friday, a strolling Dixieland band. The 1.2 mile-long Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Boardwalk and Promenade traverses through the sand from the 14th Avenue to 2nd Avenue Piers in Myrtle Beach. The boardwalk provides oceanfront views of the pristine oceanfront, numerous shops and restaurants along its path, and is divided into three different sections. The northernmost portion winds down from the 14th Avenue North Pier to Plyler Park. The mid-section is located from Plyler Park to the former Pavilion Amusement Park site at 8th Avenue North and encompasses more of a carnival-like atmosphere with oceanfront dining and businesses. The southernmost end of the boardwalk leading up to the 2nd Avenue pier has a meandering oceanfront park. Interesting facts: The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk took nine months to build, cost close to $7 million and is made up of
68
nearly 800,000 feet of lumber. Builders used about 300,000 nails, 555,000 screws and 10,000 bolts to complete the project! To keep the Boardwalk user-friendly for everyone, Myrtle Beach has put the following rules in place. • From May 1 through Labor Day, pets are allowed on the boardwalk only between 5 and 10 a.m. From the day after Labor Day through April 30, pets are allowed on the boardwalk at any time, but must be on a leash at all times, and you must pick up and properly dispose of any droppings. • Bicycles are allowed on the boardwalk on the same schedule as pets. (Law enforcement bicycles are allowed year-round.) • Skateboards, roller skates and rollerblades are prohibited on the boardwalk. Segways and other privately-owned motorized or electric vehicles also are prohibited, except those for handicapped or disabled individuals. • Feeding birds is prohibited. • Glass bottles and containers are prohibited. • Littering is prohibited. • Alcoholic beverages are prohibited, except in approved sidewalk cafes. • Soliciting, vending or distribution of free products or samples is prohibited, except for three City Council-approved vending franchises at Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Avenues North.

Project Lifesaver
Device Tracks Missing People The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, one of the largest chambers of commerce in the Eastern United States, operates three visitors centers and is teaming with a group to help protect tourists with autism, Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease who may get lost or wander off. Through Project Lifesaver, lost or wandering visitors with autism, Down syndrome or Alzheimer’s disease can be tracked through a personalized wristband that emits a tracking signal. Those who wear the wristband can be quickly located and returned to their families and caregivers. The chamber has purchased several wristbands that visitors with special needs can use at no charge during their stay in the Myrtle Beach area. This is the first time
in the United States that Project Lifesaver is being offered to visitors, according to Project Lifesaver International. Project Lifesaver relies on proven radio technology and a specially trained search-andrescue team. When caregivers notify the local Project Lifesaver agency that a person is missing, a search and rescue team is dispatched to the wanderer’s area and starts searching with the mobile locater tracking system. Search times have been reduced from hours and days to minutes. Horry County Public Safety is the first public agency to be Project Lifesaver certified in South Carolina and only one in four to be certified in the state. For more information about Project Lifesaver, call the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce at (843) 626-7444 or visit one of our three welcome centers.

One-And-Two, Three-And-Four, Five-Six– The Smooth-Stepping Shag
A visit to the northern end of the Myrtle Beach area will certainly lead you to beautiful beaches and bright sunshine, but as the sun sinks into the western sky, strains of beach music will call you to join the smooth, sure-footed dancers swaying and swinging to the beat. This is the Shag, the state dance of South Carolina. The Shag originated here in the ‘40s and ‘50s and has been a favorite of young and old ever since. Twice a year, Shag dancers enjoy a weekend of smooth moves and partying in the Ocean Drive section of North Myrtle Beach – there is even a Junior S. O. S. weekend for the younger dancers! Similar to the jitterbug and swing dancing, the Shag is slower and smoother. When watching the experts on the floor, from the waist up they look calm and relaxed, but their feet seem to defy the laws of gravity. Come join the fun!

From This Day Forward… Planning a Myrtle Beach Area Wedding A wedding on the beach is the dream of many couples coming to the Myrtle Beach area to tie the knot. With a little advance planning, your special day can be everything you dreamed of and more. A visit to Conway, the country seat, is your first stop. Marriage licenses are issued at the Probate Court Office (843-915-5370). It’s in the County Courthouse at 1301 Second Avenue, Conway. Marriage licenses are issued between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, but the office is open until 5:00 p.m. Georgetown is the county seat of Georgetown County and marriage licenses are issued at 401 Cleland Street, Room 140 (843-545-3274). The office is open 8:30 am-5 pm. Both Probate Offices are closed for all legal holidays, so it is very important to plan your trip accordingly. To receive a marriage license from the Probate Court, you’ll need to: 1) file a marriage application; 2) file a statement, under oath or affirmation, that the persons seeking the contract of matrimony are legally entitled to marry, together with the full names of the persons, their ages and their places of residence;
3) pay the appropriate fee; and 4) observe the 24-hour waiting period. If either person is under 24, a birth certificate is required. Everyone must show a photo identification. All ministers of the Gospel, Jewish rabbis, officers authorized to administer oaths in this State, and the chief or spiritual leader of a Native American Indian entity recognized by the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs are authorized to administer a marriage ceremony South Carolina. Fees range from $50 for county residents to $100 for out of state residents. Non-commercial weddings are allowed on public beaches throughout the area, but commercial weddings are only allowed on the handful of oceanfront lots that extend to the high tide line. Both commercial and noncommercial weddings are allowed in public parks in the City of Myrtle Beach with an approved permit. Contact the City of Myrtle Beach Parks Division at 843-918-2332 for permits. You must rent a shelter if one is available. Permits for weddings may be denied based on factors including traffic and neighborhood impact. VisitMyrtleBeach.com

Let’s Go Out to Eat! Find Your Favorite Food in One of the More Than 1000 Restaurant Choices One of the great pleasures of vacation is dining out – no cooking, dishes to wash or menu to plan! The Myrtle Beach area offers an incredible variety of restaurants, with every taste and budget in mind. The hardest part is making that delicious decision – where do we eat? Seafood is always a favorite, whether you like it broiled, fried, sautéed or maybe even raw. From all you can eat buffets to fine dining, the seafood here is fresh and delicious. Traditionalists will be delighted to find that fried fish platter or southern country supper – and don’t forget the hushpuppies! For land lovers, there are plenty of options from great Italian to Brazilianstyle steakhouses. If the kids want burgers, don’t worry, there are plenty of places to find them. Is Thai food your favorite? Or maybe you have a craving for sushi? No problem, all of these can be found in the Myrtle Beach area. The Myrtle Beach area has many small, family owned restaurants that feature fresh, local cuisine, prepared a number of ways. The “farm to table” movement has arrived here, with locally grown and prepared food taking top billing. Want a meal with a view? Head to the waterfront and enjoy a spectacular sunset while you eat.

DinE Home of Carolina Coastal Cuisine There’s been a revolution in cooking in the last decade or so in the Myrtle Beach area. Many professional chefs are putting a more modern spin on traditional Lowcountry dishes. “Carolina Coastal” is how this culinary genre is often described. It’s rooted in using a wide array of locally and regionally fished, grown and produced foods. Chefs use local ingredients like Carolina rice, stoneground grits, shrimp, blue crab, grouper and country ham in traditional recipes handed down from the local Gullah community and rich cultural history. The Gullah are African-Americans descended from slaves brought to the southern colonies in the early 18th century, specifically for their ability to cultivate rice. Most of their foods are stewed, grilled or roasted; very little is fried. There’s also a trend to more fresh, more local. In fact the South Carolina Hospitality Alliance has created a “fresh on the menu’’ designation for restaurants. To qualify, a least 25 per cent of the ingredients have to be locally grown. That’s easy in an area known for its fresh local seafood, rice, grits, sweet potatoes, peaches and berries. While restaurants up and down The Grand Strand prepare this cuisine, one of the most interesting spots to experience it is Murrells Inlet, seafood capital of South Carolina, 25 minutes’ drive south of central Myrtle Beach. Murrells Inlet is in the heart of the Low Country.
There are plenty of options for the budget conscious as well. Early bird specials and coupons are available, as well as restaurants that feed the kids for free! Cafeteria-style service offers a way to please everyone without breaking the bank. For breakfast, the traditional pancake house is sure to please everyone. Or maybe a specialty coffee drink with a pastry is more to your liking? However you fuel up for the day there are lots of options. Lunch offerings range from the small, intimate restaurant to the familyfriendly chains that please everyone. From peach cobbler to shrimp and grits, the Myrtle Beach area has a memorable dining experience in store. Let’s go out to eat!

Meet the Chefs
These Talented Professionals Ensure a Delicious Dining Experience Casey Blake Chef Ervin “Casey” Blake II, a Pawleys Island, S.C., native, got his start in the restaurant business by lying about his age to get his first job bussing tables and soon moved on to cooking. He got his second job at Drunken Jacks a few years later and after three years became the Executive Chef. Casey studied at Horry-Georgetown Technical College, but most of his skill comes from hands-on experience. Now on his 18th year with Drunken Jack’s Restaurant, this seasoned chef oversees both Drunken Jacks Restaurant and Inlet Affairs Banquet and Catering. Casey has gotten local recognition for winning “The Best Damn Chowder” award from the Murrells Inlet community and attends annual food shows for ideas on the latest food trends. Bradley Daniels Originally from Orlando, Florida, Bradley’s passion for cooking was sparked by the memories of watching his grandmother cook. After graduating from Carson-Newman College in Tennessee, Bradley returned home to attend Le Cordon Bleu in Orlando, and to work for celebrity chef Todd English at his eclectic seafood restaurant Bluezoo. Under the guidance of Executive Chef Edward Bilicki, Bradley’s culinary skills flourished. After leaving Bluezoo, this passionate chef expanded his culinary education at several prestigious restaurants where he fell in love with the concept of drawing from indigenous ingredients and cuisines. As Executive Chef at Croissants Bistro & Bakery, Bradley uses local and fresh ingredients, drawing from the many farms and fisherman that South Carolina has to offer.
Curry Martin Born and raised in the South, Curry Martin has always had an appreciation for good food served in a comfortable atmosphere. A graduate of the culinary arts program at Johnson and Wales University, Curry interned at The Cloister at Sea Island. In 2000, Curry traveled to France where he apprenticed with Restaurant Pierre Orsi in Lyon and Restaurant Michel Rostang in Paris. Today, this innovative chef focuses on keeping flavors of foods as natural as possible, using simple, yet the highest quality product available. It’s easy to enjoy the game here. Book a tee time online to ensure a prime location or season for your adventure, or take advantage of numerous specials offered by area courses. Summer rates provide optimum seasonal value; playing early in the week or in the afternoon are ways to enjoy the best of the sport even on a budget. Some courses offer free play for kids, one round free after playing three or a reduced rate for last-minute tee times.
110
Golf packages are another way to make the most of the experience, with dozens of area hotels and resorts offering special deals. Some packages include lodging, tee times, taxes and fees, meaning golfers can spend their time on the course rather than on the phone making plans. With its selection, quality and value, the Myrtle Beach area continues to live up to its national reputation as a top golf destination.

Golf is Family-Friendly This Summer, Enjoy a Round With the Kids Introduce your children to the game of golf and make memories they’ll never forget. Throughout the summer, area golf courses participate in a “Kids Play Free” program, allowing children ages 16 and under to play free when accompanied by a paying adult. This is great news for golfing families. For beginners and those wishing to improve their swing, The Golf Capital of the World has partnered with a few of the game’s best instructors to create special Golf Summer School programs. Summer school has never been more fun with expert tutelage and state-of-the-art instruction

equipment. Your quest for higher education will guarantee future success on the golf course! And, some of the world’s best golf courses will be hosting Summer Family Golf Tournaments, featuring a series of single-day events designed to allow families a little golf competition with their family vacation. Hosted once per week during the summer months, the format is a two-person Captain’s Choice (scramble) using the Callaway System, so no handicap is necessary. Each event includes three divisions: Open, Couples and Adult/Youth.

The favorite way for visitors to get to the Grand Strand is by car, but if you’re planning a long weekend getaway, fun shopping expedition or a golf outing, Myrtle Beach transportation can accommodate. Visit our online map to navigate the Myrtle Beach area like a local on our new highways. Traveling by Air If you’re the traveler who wants to get to the Grand Strand fast so you can begin enjoying the sights and sounds of the Myrtle Beach area sooner, no problem. Flying to the Myrtle Beach area is quick and effortless with so many wellknown carriers including Delta, Continental, Myrtle Beach Direct Air, Spirit, Northwest, United and US Airways. Check to see if your location flies to the Myrtle Beach area. The Myrtle Beach International Airport serves as the commercial airport for the Grand Strand and also offers service for private companies. Once you’ve arrived, don’t fret over transportation to your ultimate destination. Myrtle Beach transportation is available whether you’re seeking a rental car, taxi or limousine service. In addition to the Myrtle Beach International Airport, there are several other local airports serving the private and corporate sectors. Traveling by Car We want you to visit so we’re working hard to expand roadways for travel to South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach area. A proposed Interstate 73 corridor would create more of a direct route for visitors to the Grand Strand from states throughout the upper Midwest and Northeast. Want to know how “close” you are to the Myrtle Beach Area? Take a look at these cities and the driving distance from them.

The Horry County Department of Airports was created in November 1987 as an agency of Horry County. The director of the airports is appointed by the county administrator. There are four airports managed by the Horry County Department of Airports. For additional airport information call 843-448-1580. Grand Strand Airport (CRE) Located within the city limits of North Myrtle Beach, this airport serves private and corporate aircraft with parking, refueling, maintenance and with full-service, fixedbase operators. This is an ideal stop for people visiting the North Strand or transiting from the Northeast to farther South. Conway‑Horry County Airport (HYW) Located five miles west of the county seat of Conway, this airport serves general aviation aircraft with parking, refueling and maintenance. The Conway-Horry County Airport is home to the North American Institute of Aviation (NAIA), one of the finest aviation schools in the nation. The school offers complete ground and flight training to secure FAA private, commercial and ATP licenses. The school has a college-type atmosphere with dormitories for full-time students. Twin City‑Loris Airport Located two miles northeast of Loris, this facility serves as an unattended airport for public use. This is an excellent training airport for practice approaches and landings by private aircraft. Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) Located approximately one mile from the Atlantic Ocean in Myrtle Beach, the Myrtle Beach International Airport serves as the only commercial airport for Horry County and the Grand Strand. The airport is a full service airport including all Bureau of Customs and Border Protection. Myrtle Beach Aviation The general aviation, fixed-based operator, located at the Myrtle Beach International Airport provides aircraft fueling and hangar services.

myrtle Beach Parking & meters March 1 marks the beginning of seasonal parking regulations on Ocean Boulevard. Parking is prohibited on the Boulevard from March 1 through September 30. This also marks the return of dedicated transit lanes for public transportation vehicles (Lymo), other buses (charter or private, more than 15 seats) and emergency vehicles. Southbound, the lanes run from 29th Avenue North to Mr. Joe White Avenue and from Eighth Avenue North to First Avenue North. Northbound, lanes run from First to 29th Avenue North. The transit lanes are in effect from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily, but all traffic may use the lanes during other hours. (Delivery vehicles are allowed to use the transit lanes between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. to load or unload.) When the lanes are in effect, from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., regular traffic is allowed to briefly enter the transit lanes to bypass a vehicle that is turning left. Regular traffic should return to the general-purpose lane immediately after passing the turning vehicle. Vehicles turning right may briefly merge into the transit lane to facilitate the right-hand turn. Park by phone is available in Myrtle Beach.
Park by phone allows parkers to feed their meters via their cell phones, so they don’t need change. To use Park by phone, a parker simply calls the toll free number shown on the meter. Repeat users are recognized electronically, so that all they need to do is enter their meter number and the amount of time they wish to park. New users can register with their first call or do so online at parkmobile.com. Any parking charges are billed to a credit card along with a 35 cent per use fee. Short-term parking has been extended to three hours, instead of two. Short-term meters are located mainly near the amusement parks. New, more-descriptive meter stickers will tell customers which meters offer all-day parking or short-term parking. The stickers also make clear that it costs just $6 to keep an all-day space all day. That $6 per day rate is comparable to, or better than, private parking fees. Currently, the parking meters are in effect from March 1 through September 30. For more information on parking meters and pay stations visit CityOfMyrtleBeach.com/Meters.html

Experience the Past–Embrace the Present Myrtle Beach Area Cultural Arts Scene The arts have long been a part of the Myrtle Beach area, but the past few years have brought even more offerings for lovers of the cultural arts. Several museums in the area highlight our rich history and our own Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum features rotating art exhibits along with an impressive permanent collection of antique maps, prints and local art work. The performing arts are alive and well with the Long Bay Symphony performing approximately 30 shows per year and the Carolina Master Chorale, a 70 member community chorus, collaborates with the symphony throughout the year. The Myrtle Beach Colored School served African-American students in the Myrtle Beach area for more than 20 years. Now, a new Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum and Education Center provides a window on that past, as well as a door to the future for all. Located at 900 Dunbar St. in Myrtle Beach, the historic school is open for tours from 10 amnoon on Monday and 1-4 pm Tuesday-Friday. On the south end of the Myrtle Beach area, another living history museum is found on Freewoods Farm, where visitors experience life on an African-American owned farm. A little farther south in Pawleys Island is the Gullah Museum which explores this fascinating culture with lectures and authentic arts and crafts. Visitors interested in the history of the Civil War may wish to visit the S.C. Civil War Museum at 4875 Hwy 17 Bypass, South, Myrtle Beach. History buffs will be fascinated by period firearms, edged weapons, clothing, books and more. The Market Common District is situated on the site of the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base and the Historic Myrtle Beach Air Force Museum has outdoor exhibits, plaques and more located on the grounds. The Horry County Museum at 428 Main St. in Conway highlights the history of the area with

exhibits ranging from quilts to tools used in the activities of daily life as well as exhibits of local art. Experience what life was like on a “one-horse farm” at the L.W. Paul living history farm just outside of Conway. The beautiful downtown area of Conway has galleries offering the work of local artists, a Gullah shop and glass blowing.
Considered the finest presentation of outdoor sculpture in the world, Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet was created in the 1930s by Anna and Hyatt Huntington. Today visitors can view more than 900 works, see indigenous wildlife and learn more about local history. Even the youngest visitors can enjoy a cultural experience at the Children’s Museum of South Carolina in Myrtle Beach, packed with exhibits to fascinate kids while teaching them about the natural world. Enjoy Broadway and off-Broadway plays at Atlantic Stage, the area’s only non-profit theatre. At Uptown, home of the Carolina Improv Company, experience the spontaneity and laughter of improv geared for everyone from the youngest to the oldest members of the family. Conway’s Theater of the Republic just celebrated its 41st season. Recent productions include Hairspray and A Tale of Two Cities.

The Gang’s All Here! Find the Perfect Vacation Rental for Your Group Memories of beach houses packed with family are a part of most of our histories – those days when collecting shells and steaming crabs were the most important tasks at hand. Make new vacation memories with a Myrtle Beach area beach home rental – the options are endless! The Myrtle Beach area has vacation rentals ranging from the ten bedroom executive home, with all of the latest amenities, to rustic oceanfront cottages
reminiscent of vacations past. Invite your college roommates to share some special time together in a condominium complete with an on-site pool and Jacuzzi. Organize that long put off family reunion in an ocean front beach house with plenty of room for napping babies and resting grandparents. Whoever you gather together for your next beach reunion, the Myrtle Beach area will provide the place for your special time together. VisitMyrtleBeach.com
