Where am I

Where to go and what to do in the Myrtle Beach area Myrtle Beach’s 60-mile coast boasts 12 sun-filled communities, each bringing something special and unique to the area. Visit as many as you can during your stay and enjoy the variety of South Carolina’s Grand Strand and all it has to offer. Little River is not only the oldest community along the Grand Strand; it’s also one of the few places left where life moves at a slower pace. This fishing village is known for its fresh seafood and popular Blue Crab Festival. Visitors to Little River will enjoy peaceful days along the water and gain a deeper understanding of what southern comfort is all about. North Myrtle Beach is no longer just the home of the Shag, South Carolina’s state dance. Along a 9-mile stretch of beach, you’ll

6

find a place where the words ‘laid’ and ‘back’ fit together perfectly. While you’re on the North end, shag your way over to Atlantic Beach, an area sometimes referred to as the “Black Pearl.” Home to several annual festivals, visitors to Atlantic Beach can also see how this small town has been molded by South Carolina’s Gullah-Geechee culture. Beautiful beaches, delicious restaurants, stellar shopping, and never-ending entertainment can all be found in Myrtle Beach, the heart of the Grand Strand. A little further south you’ll find the small town of Surfside Beach, aptly nicknamed the “family beach.” The family-friendly atmosphere of both areas offers fishing, festivals, and tons of fun in the sun.

Fishing and surfing are among two of the most favorite past times in Garden City. This is the place to enjoy the cool ocean breeze while relaxing on the Atlantic’s picturesque coast! The seafood capital of South Carolina can be found a little further south in Murrells Inlet. It’s hard to miss the beautiful sunsets along the Marsh Walk, and everyone that visits should try a basket full of mouthwatering hushpuppies. Whether you’re golfing on a first-class golf course, relaxing on the beach, or shopping at a one-of-a-kind boutique, it’s easy to feel at home in Litchfield Beach’s friendly environment. Down the road you’ll discover Pawley’s Island, a historic community that was once the summer home to wealthy,

pre-Civil War rice planters. This area’s ‘at-ease atmosphere’ is what shapes the charm of one of the oldest summer resorts along the East Coast. Home of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and scenic downtown River walk is Conway, a quaint town with fine dining and shopping that follows a stretch of the Waccamaw River. If you’ve never tried chicken bog you’re in for a treat making a stop at the annual Bog-Off Festival in Loris, a small town known for its friendliness. Another small town with big charm is Aynor, home to the Harvest HoeDown Festival, where you can indulge in country living and a bit of history during your stay.

Pawleys Island

Litchfield Beach

Found at the southernmost end of the Myrtle Beach area, Pawleys Island is one of the oldest resorts on the East Coast and was the summer home to wealthy pre-Civil War rice planters, who retreated to the island to escape the heat and disease-causing mosquitoes. Some of these homes are still intact and historical markers throughout the small island give brief histories. Residents and visitors alike proudly call Pawleys Island, “arrogantly shabby,” and revel in its simplicity and natural beauty. The community of Pawleys Island boasts unique shops and restaurants sure to please every palate, but the slower pace encourages spending hours in hammocks gazing across the wide expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. Beach houses are passed down through the generations and upgrades are few. According to Josh Quigley, resident of the Pawleys Island area, arrogantly shabby means “old school and proud of it.” From this leisurely existence, Pawleys Island has developed its laid back, shoeless lifestyle. An afternoon crabbing in the creek, following by a feast of the day’s catch is the kind of beautifully simple day that entices visitors year after year. HammockCoastSC.com

Long walks on wide beaches erase the cares of visitors to Litchfield Beach. Quiet and reserved, Litchfield Beach’s sophisticated appeal includes world-class golf courses, fine dining and a slightly urban feel. Beaches are more sparsely populated here, and the natural beauty of sand and sea oats takes center stage. Established in 1978, this popular unincorporated beach community took its name from Litchfield Plantation, a lovely rice plantation on the Waccamaw River. Runners, walkers and bikers enjoy Waccamaw Neck Bikeway that is part of the East Coast Greenway, finding no better way to experience the sights and sounds of this beautiful area. HammockCoastSC.com

Murrells Inlet

Where spectacular views and seafood abound Murrells Inlet is quite a ‘catch’ to those who love the outdoors. The Marshwalk offers spectacular views and a chance to watch fishing boats come in with the days’ catch. Thrill seekers will relish opportunities to parasail, ride a banana boat or drive a jet ski. The young and young at heart will have a swashbuckling good time on pirate-themed boat tours that bring Murrells Inlet’s history of pirates and adventurers to life. Known world-wide for its beauty, Brookgreen Gardens showcases its extensive American sculpture collection with the best nature has to offer. Known as “seafood capital of South Carolina,” there’s a delicious dinner waiting after a busy, fun-filled day. This fishing village has a boating experience for every taste, from kayaking at sunrise to a day-long, chartered deep sea fishing excursion to the Gulf Stream. For those who like to cook their own seafood, local markets offer the freshest selection of shrimp, fish, oysters and crabs. After dark, things get lively along

the Marshwalk, with live music streaming from several establishments. Founded by Archer and Anna Huntington in 1931, Brookgreen Gardens was their gift to the community they loved. Today it is a National Historic Landmark with one of the most significant collections of figurative sculpture, by American artists, in an outdoor setting in the world. Visitors will always find something in bloom, no matter what the season, and the zoo offers an up close look at local wildlife. Directly across the highway lies Huntington Beach State Park, originally a part of the Huntington’s estate and now a must-see for the serious bird watcher. This 2500 acre park also offers ocean-side camping, fishing and nature programs along the three miles of beach and hundreds of acres of salt marsh. Whether up-close or at a distance, an encounter with nature is waiting in Murrells Inlet. Enjoy the great outdoors! HammockCoastSC.com VisitMyrtleBeach.com

Surfside Beach

The perfect family getaway It’s all about families in Surfside Beach, where visitors will find activities to please all ages. By the time the town was incorporated in 1964, the quiet, clean community had already established its reputation as a family beach. In the early 1800s, much of what is now Surfside Beach was owned by John Tillman and called The Ark Plantation, where the main crop produced was sweet potatoes. The original plantation house stood until the middle of the 20th century. Pristine, beautiful beaches are cleaned daily and supervised by lifeguards and police. Several beach access points offer showers, restrooms and foot showers, as well as handicapped accessible ramps. This eco-friendly beach encourages beach-goers to recycle by collecting cans, bottles and newspapers. The Surfside Beach Pier is perfect for sunset walks over the water or enjoying Sunday Serenades, a summer concert series. Fisherman interested in casting a line will find equipment rentals and bait available

10

in the Pier’s tackle shop. Originally built in 1953, this pier has been rebuilt at least three times, the last in March of 1993. Visitors can enjoy a game of tennis, bocce, shuffleboard and much more at the town’s seven public parks. All Children’s Park has playground equipment made especially for those will physical handicaps. The newest park, Passive Park, sits beside the public library and offers a place to enjoy the beauty of nature in quiet contemplation. Miniature golf courses offer hours of fun in Surfside and, for those who want a day out of the sun, there is still a lot to do. Enjoy a game of billiards or perfect a strike at the local bowling alley. For heart-stopping, fast paced excitement visit the local water park, which also features bumper boats, a race track, go carts and more. No matter the season, there’s always something fun to do in Surfside Beach. Generations of families, return year after year making memories that last a lifetime. SurfsideBeach.org

Myrtle Beach

The heart of the Grand Strand Opportunities for the perfect vacation are endless in bustling Myrtle Beach, from relaxing on the shore to unbelievable shopping, thrilling rides, exciting attractions and sizzling nightlife. A sophisticated cultural scene brings it all together, making Myrtle Beach a sought after vacation destination. Now a thriving metropolis, Myrtle Beach began as a getaway for employees of the lumber industry in Conway who would take the train to “New Town” on their free weekends. The area continued to grow until its incorporation in 1957. A contest to name the town resulted in “Myrtle Beach” after the area’s prolific Southern Wax Myrtle shrubs. Today, visitors have nearly unlimited opportunities for entertainment in Myrtle Beach. For beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean, take a leisurely stroll down the oceanfront boardwalk, and for a panoramic view from 200 feet above sea level, enjoy a ride on the new SkyWheel. Riding the waves on a boogie board is just the thing to cool off on a hot afternoon or visit one of Myrtle Beach’s water parks to beat the heat. To get up close and personal with some of the

ocean’s most interesting inhabitants, visit Myrtle Beach’s aquarium or see what a 70 mph hurricane wind feels like in the new interactive science museum. And nothing says summer like an afternoon of baseball at TicketReturn.com Field, home of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. For those who love to be active, Myrtle Beach’s state park offers maritime forests and unspoiled beachfront for camping, hiking, biking, fishing and even nature programs for all ages. The more adventurous will want to try jet skiing or parasailing. Art lovers will enjoy a visit to the area’s art museum, located a stone’s throw from the ocean and features world class exhibits year round. Myrtle Beach also is host to a well-known symphony whose concerts draws hundreds of music lovers. Nightlife in Myrtle Beach is another adventure to explore, with comedy clubs, music from country to disco and dancing to every beat. Exciting dinner shows featuring pirates and medieval knights are destined to be the night the entire family will never forget. VisitMyrtleBeach.com VisitMyrtleBeach.com

Garden City Beach

Atlantic Beach

Located directly south of Surfside Beach, Garden City Beach stretches south to the mouth of Murrells Inlet and straddles the county line between Horry and Georgetown counties. Year after year, the same families return to this small beach community for their beach vacation. The heart of Garden City Beach is the Pier, which boasts live music at night and an angler’s paradise during the day. Arcades filled with the whirls and jingles of games intermixed with the laughter of the players are a favorite stop for those ready to have fun after a day of play in the sun. Lighthearted, familyfriendly celebrations are held throughout the year, such as the 4th of July golf cart parade. The inlet meets the ocean here in Garden City Beach, and on the marsh side visitors find spectacular sunsets and restaurants serving fresh seafood. A stroll along the creek walk is a relaxing way to end the day. On the southern end of Garden City Beach, a marina offers boaters safe harbor and an interesting place for visitors to have dinner while enjoying the peace found where water meets land. VisitMyrtleBeach.com

In the early 1930s, when African-Americans were restricted by segregation laws, Atlantic Beach, also known as the “Black Pearl” was formed as a vacation getaway for black families. It became a popular vacation destination, and black-owned businesses thrived in this small community nestled in the heart of North Myrtle Beach. Many residents are descendants of the Gullah-Geechee people, former slaves from the West Coast of Africa who lived and worked in the coastal area from around Jacksonville, Florida, to Wilmington, North Carolina. Today, residents of Atlantic Beach are working for preserve the rich heritage and traditions of their community. An annual festival celebrates the Gullah-Geechee culture with food, music and dancing. 843-663-2284

North Myrtle Beach Where the shag reigns supreme

The area now known as North Myrtle Beach has a rich history that began well before Europeans appeared. Originally the parttime home and retreat of the Waccamaw and Winyah Native American tribes, they called the coast, “Chicora,” meaning “the land.” The Spanish explored the area in the 1500s, and by the 1700s, what is now known as Cherry Grove was a successful indigo plantation, as well as the occasional home of the notorious pirate Blackbeard. Today, North Myrtle Beach is a thriving area and a favorite among tourists. In 1968, four existing communities, Cherry Grove, Windy Hill, Ocean Drive and Crescent Beach were combined to form the city. Throughout the year, festivals celebrate everything from St. Patrick’s Day to the end of summer. Strains of beach music can be heard in the Ocean Drive section nearly every night as those who love the state dance, the shag, slip and slide the night away.

An oceanfront amusement park on Main Street offers classic rides and amusements to please all ages, along with free summer concerts throughout the season in nearby McLean Park. Reptiles rule at a sanctuary that houses alligators, snakes, lizards and tropical birds. Beautiful beaches, fishing piers, boating and the world’s largest waterslide offer plenty of outdoor fun. Finding treasures and souvenirs are an exciting addition to any vacation. Well known for its wide variety of shopping, North Myrtle Beach has an eclectic array of outlet stores, malls, quirky flea markets and unusual boutiques. After a day spent enjoying all that North Myrtle Beach has to offer, gorgeous sunsets herald the end of daylight, and the beginning of a nightlife filled with excitement. Live theater, variety shows, dance clubs and more are part of the fun in North Myrtle Beach. The diversity of North Myrtle Beach guarantees something for everyone to enjoy. Little River

Conway

This small fishing village, located in the northernmost part of the Myrtle Beach area, provides a relaxing, laid back destination for travelers. For those seeking excitement, jet ski and boat rentals are available on the waterway. Deep sea fishing charters leave with the sunrise, taking anglers to some of the best fishing spots on the coast. Shorter fishing and party boat cruises are also available throughout the day. Evening trips on casino boats offer excitement and fun. Land lovers will enjoy a sunset stroll on the live oak lined historic waterfront. The commercial fishing boats come in, one by one, bringing fresh seafood to satisfy the hunger diners at local restaurants and seafood markets. Little River’s annual Blue Crab Festival, held every May, is a 30 year-long tradition that attracts thousands to a weekend of live music, arts and crafts, and, of course, seafood prepared in dozens of ways. October brings the Shrimp and Jazz Festival highlighting the delicious crustacean and the sounds of cool jazz. A visit to Little River leaves visitors looking forward to the next trip. Set on the banks of the beautiful Waccamaw River is the town of Conway. One of the oldest towns in South Carolina, Conway is the county seat of Horry County (pronounced OR-ee), and has all the charm and grace of an older Southern town. Treelined streets run through the picturesque historic district of Conway, inviting visitors to stay and learn more. A visit to the county museum, followed by a guided tour through the historic district is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. The charming downtown area has lovely historic architecture that houses unique shops, a thriving art community and interesting restaurants. Aynor

Loris

Incorporated in 1913, the small town of Aynor once had a bustling tobacco market, as well as a cotton gin, brickyard and several mills. Located 35 miles inland on Highway 501, this friendly community is known as “Little Golden Town.” September brings the Harvest Hoe-Down Festival to Aynor where country living is celebrated with food, games, music and fun for the entire family. The historic Hagood House, built in the 1920s, has been restored and is operated as a bed and breakfast, as well as a restaurant, offering visitors a charming way to enjoy Southern hospitality. Each November, the Native American Waccamaw tribe holds their annual Pauwau on tribal grounds just outside of Aynor. Festivities include tribal dance and demonstrations of the rich culture and heritage of the tribe. AynorChamber.com

Visitors driving to the northern end of the Myrtle Beach area will pass through the small inland town of Loris on Highway 9. Many find this close-knit town well worth the time to stop and explore. Loris began as a railroad town serving the lumber industry in the late 1880s and became the first town in the state to have its own newspaper, high school, bank, telephone system and doctor. Today, a revitalized downtown offers shopping, dining and southern hospitality. The local farmers market is a feast of fresh produce, home baked goods and arts and crafts. Nearby, the Waccamaw River is home to a wide array of wildlife, and the local environmental education center’s annual Forever Wild Swampfest is a unique opportunity to learn more about the natural world. On the third Saturday of every October, Loris is host to the Great Loris Bog-Off Festival. The day-long event celebrates this local dish of rice, chicken and sausage with a day of fun and festivity that attracts more than 25,000 people each year. The highlight of the day is the BogOff competition where visitors come prepared to sample and enjoy this popular local dish. LorisChamberSC.com

Myrtle Beach Area Memories Last a Lifetime

Our visitors share what matters most on vacation My favorite memory is spending the day on the beach with my family and friends. Since I was little, I have been visiting with my family; but as I get older, I visit more with friends. With groups, the beach and entire area is great. It’s a family-oriented, friendly area that is safe and fun. Two of my friends recently got engaged on the beach, and that was a great memory that we were able to take part in and share forever. - The Alexander Family Brodhead, Kentucky

My favorite memory was introducing my mother and dad to the beach, along with their grandchildren. My parents had never visited the ocean, while we went to Myrtle Beach every year. Finally they came along with us and our children, ages 9 and 2. Seeing the joy in their eyes along with the little ones was amazing. Since 1970, every vacation in Myrtle Beach has its own special memories. We never vacation anywhere else. Now, my sisters and their husbands come with us, and we stay for a month in a beautiful condo on the south end of Myrtle Beach. - The Coakley Family Frostburg, Maryland

Myrtle Beach Memories

One of our favorite memories of our beach visits is searching for washed-up shark teeth. For hours, all four of us comb the beach looking for the ‘big one.’ Also, we write our family name and year in the sand and take a photo every year. We have met so many nice people on our trips, and actually have kept in contact with some. When we arrive, it seems like we are home. We know the local stores, mini-golf courses, restaurants and more. Each year, we can’t wait to visit and always hate coming back home. - The Haas Family Oregon, Ohio

We love Myrtle Beach so much and love to share it with family! A few years ago, we convinced my in-laws to come with us. We all had a great time! My husband and father-in-law fished while my mother-in-law enjoyed walking and reading on the beach. We all went to NASCAR Speedpark for dinner and my daughter actually got her grandparents and her Dad to race with her in the cars. It was wonderful! We got some GREAT pictures and even better memories. We all still talk about that trip, and I know my daughter made some priceless memories with her grandparents that will last a lifetime. - The Fields Family Fairborn, Ohio

The Fun Starts Here With all the rides, shopping and entertainment, you’ll have to think hard to remember you’re at the beach The Myrtle Beach area provides a new meaning and a higher standard to the word ‘vacation.’ The beach is your playground, and with over 60 miles of sand, sun, and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean, it’s easy to relax and relive those special childhood vacation memories. The fun may start at the beach, but it doesn’t have to stay there. Whether you’re vacationing with a big group or on your honeymoon, there is fun to be had at every turn. Myrtle Beach’s warm temperatures and abundant sunshine keeps everyone playing outside. Stay in the water and take a break from the sand while racing down a waterslide at one of the local waterparks, or spot dolphins while zipping around the surf on a jet ski. Test your bravery while parasailing over the Atlantic, or hold on tight as you embark on a fun-filled banana boat ride. Once you’ve had all the saltwater you can handle, get out of the ocean and soar into the sky on the east coast’s only 200-foot SkyWheel. If the ride leaves you wanting more of a thrill, hop on one of the area’s rollercoasters for more spins, dips and turns. Once you’ve had all of the excitement you can handle, head to one of the Grand Strand’s many miniature golf courses try your luck at hitting a hole-in-one. Explore the Myrtle Beach area’s great outdoors and discover the picturesque landscape for which the South Carolina coast is known. Two state parks, Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park, offer

Or, Brookgreen Gardens offers a more tranquil atmosphere, where visitors can enjoy the wildlife at the low country zoo while being surrounded by the most significant collection of figurative sculpture in an outdoor setting by American artists in the world. If you’re looking for a way to have fun without the sun, the Myrtle Beach area offers a number of fun-filled indoor

activities. Become a wizard at MagiQuest, take a ride on the hurricane simulator at WonderWorks, get in touch with your inner child and explore the Children’s Museum of South Carolina, or pet a stingray at Ripley’s Aquarium. If you do them all or even just one, you’ll be happy you escaped the heat for a little while. For our visiting shopaholics, the wide array of fantastic stores in the Myrtle Beach area will keep you busy. Indulge on your vacation at one of the areas upscale retail stores at the Market Common, while Barefoot Landing offers great

Save big when you shop with one of our two Tanger Outlet locations, each offering tons of different name brand stores from which to choose. With so many options, it will be hard to go home empty-handed. Whether you’re a fan of baseball, racing, or just enjoy sports all together, Myrtle Beach has got something special for you. Head over to the TicketReturn.com field for some good old fashioned American baseball. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans sure know how to play ball. Grab some delicious

boiled peanuts or a loaded hot dog, sit back, and cheer on the home team. If you like something a little more fast-paced, NASCAR SpeedPark will have you racing in circles until you feel like a pro. This family amusement park offers a variety of race tracks and arcades for everyone. For the ultimate thrill, drive or ride along in a NASCAR race car at Myrtle Beach Speedway with the NASCAR Racing Experience.

Get in the Water A relaxing vacation can turn exciting when you take your activities out on the water Our visitors love that “it’s five o’clock somewhere” feeling they get as soon as they arrive in the Myrtle Beach area. There is just something special about relaxing in a beach chair with your toes in the sand and a cold drink in your hand. But there is also something special about climbing onto a big, yellow banana boat in the Atlantic Ocean with your friends and family screaming with excitement as you head over a wave. Bodies of water are plentiful along the Grand Strand, whether it’s the Atlantic Ocean, Intracoastal Waterway, or one of the many inlets and rivers, and a relaxing day beside the water can quickly become one of the most memorable when you decide to take the plunge. If you’re looking for an extreme water adventure, the Myrtle Beach area has plenty of options for you. Take your vacation to new heights while parasailing over the ocean or zoom just above the water on a speedy airboat. Jet ski, windsurfing and kiteboarding rentals are also available, for the true daredevils who visit our shores. Maybe you’re looking to be out on the water, but want to relax as well. It doesn’t get more relaxing or romantic than a sunset cruise around Murrells Inlet. Get even more intimate with Mother Nature and see our scenic wildlife up close while paddling through

the calm water on a guided kayak tour. The Myrtle Beach area may not be known for the biggest waves, but it is a great place to learn how to surf or try paddle boarding for the first time. Local surf shops offer surf lessons for beginners who are ready to hang ten, and visitors can even head out to a serene spot on the river for some paddleboard yoga! For those who love fishing, there’s no better place to put your rod and reel to work. Happy anglers make their way

back to the marina after a full or partial day of fishing on the Gulf Stream with a charter boat. There are also a number of piers along the Grand Strand for those wishing to keep their feet on firm ground with plenty of fish to catch! With so many opportunities to be out on the water, your vacation is bound to be full of splashes, plenty of excitement and lots of memories. Don’t count on staying too dry during your stay with us—get out there and enjoy the surf!

Out of Harm’s Way Have fun while playing it safe

There is nothing better than cooling off with a nice swim in the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. But before jumping in, here are ten safety tips for ocean swimmers to keep in mind: 1. Swim near a lifeguard. 2. Never swim alone. 3. Obey all posted warning signs and flags. 4. Protect your head and neck by not diving into the surf. 5. Avoid the use of alcohol and drugs. 6. Beware of trash and broken bottles. 7. Leash your boogie board or surfboard. 8. Don’t fight the current and signal for help if necessary. 9. Watch small children closely. 10. Don’t forget the sunscreen.

If caught in a rip tide: 1. Don’t fight the current 2. Swim out of the current, then in to shore 3. If you can’t escape, float or tread water 4. If you need help, call or wave for assistance

Clean Water, Safe Swim

The Myrtle Beach area keeps an eye on the surf The health and safety of residents and visitors are of the highest importance to the municipalities in the Myrtle Beach area. To ensure that area beach water is clean and safe, a voluntary beach water monitoring program is underway in cooperation with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. During the summer months, the surf is regularly tested. If unacceptable levels of bacteria are detected, the area affected is posted with an advisory.

The possibility of pollutants in ocean water is greatest after a heavy rain, when runoff from lawns and streets can pick up fertilizer, pesticides and trash. Swimming immediately after a rainstorm and playing in shallow tidal pools or in the water discharging from storm drainage pipes should be avoided. Swimming in contaminated water may result in minor illnesses such as sore throats or diarrhea. Natural organisms can affect anyone with certain existing health problems. VisitMyrtleBeach.com

Entertainment under the Stars

Everyone loves a little imagination, especially entertainers in the Myrtle Beach area From pirates to comedians, local theaters along the Grand Strand light up the stage with excitement. Whether you enjoy Broadway show tunes, head banging Rock-and-Roll, or good ‘ole country, the Myrtle Beach area has a show for you. Reminisce the night away listening to music from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. The ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ of the audience are audible when watching an amazing magic and illusion show complete with daring escapoligists, eye-poping illustionists and incredibly quick-change artists. Even with a mouth full of delicious chicken or a perfectly-cooked rib in your hand, you won’t stop cheering on your favorite knight and his steed while in the midst of a jousting match. Elsewhere on our shores, pirates fight it out on land and sea and happy families leave exciting shows saying, “Arrrgh matey,” one too many times. These family-friendly, themed shows are sure to leave you delighted and ready to see another. Whether you’re going back in time to a 70s disco era or catching up on the latest dance moves, live entertainment in the Myrtle Beach area is something all visitors can enjoy. The real fun begins when the sun sets and the stages light up!

1.2 Miles of Boardwalk Fun The best place to walk a mile at the beach Taking a walk along our shoreline is a lot more fun on Myrtle Beach’s popular 1.2-mile boardwalk and promenade. You can stroll along, taking in the Atlantic Ocean’s breathtaking view all while enjoying numerous shops and restaurants along the way. Stretching from the Second Avenue Pier to the 14th Avenue Pier, and constructed with nearly 800,000 nails, 555,000 screws and 10,000 bolts, the Myrtle Beach boardwalk and promenade is something the entire family will enjoy. The boardwalk features three different sections, each varying in width and shape. The first section is all about visitors enjoying

a serene, peaceful and natural environment and beach experience. The second section of the boardwalk is all about high intensity fun! Walking along this section, you’ll find the best beachfront stores and shops. With all the different sounds and upbeat energy, it’s like being at a carnival on the beach. The third section is made up of comfortable benches and natural landscaping. Relax and enjoy the view on your walk while exploring this section of the boardwalk. Project Lifesaver

Device tracks missing people The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, one of the largest chambers of commerce in the Eastern United States, operates three visitors centers and is teaming with a group to help protect tourists with autism, Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease who may get lost or wander off. Through Project Lifesaver, lost or wandering visitors with autism, Down syndrome or Alzheimer’s disease can be tracked through a personalized wristband that emits a tracking signal. Those who wear the wristband can be quickly located and returned to their families and caregivers. The chamber has purchased several wristbands that visitors with special needs can use at no charge during their stay in the Myrtle Beach area. This is the first time

82

in the United States that Project Lifesaver is being offered to visitors, according to Project Lifesaver International. Project Lifesaver relies on proven radio technology and a specially trained search-andrescue team. When caregivers notify the local Project Lifesaver agency that a person is missing, a search and rescue team is dispatched to the wanderer’s area and starts searching with the mobile locater tracking system. Search times have been reduced from hours and days to minutes. Horry County Public Safety is the first public agency to be Project Lifesaver certified in South Carolina and only one in four to be certified in the state. For more information about Project Lifesaver, call the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce at (843) 626-7444 or visit one of our three welcome centers.

From This Day Forward… Planning a Myrtle Beach area wedding A wedding on the beach is the dream of many couples coming to the Myrtle Beach area to tie the knot. With a little advance planning, your special day can be everything you dreamed of and more. A visit to Conway, the country seat, is your first stop. Marriage licenses are issued at the Probate Court Office (843-915-5370). It’s in the County Courthouse at 1301 Second Avenue, Conway. Marriage licenses are issued between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, but the office is open until 5:00 p.m. Georgetown is the county seat of Georgetown County and marriage licenses are issued at 401 Cleland Street, Room 140 (843-545-3274). The office is open 8:30 am-5 pm. Both Probate Offices are closed for all legal holidays, so it is very important to plan your trip accordingly. To receive a marriage license from the Probate Court, you’ll need to: 1) file a marriage application; 2) file a statement, under oath or affirmation, that the persons seeking the contract of matrimony are legally entitled to marry, together with the full names of the persons, their ages and their places of residence; 3) pay the appropriate fee; and

84

4) observe the 24-hour waiting period. If either person is under 24, a birth certificate is required. Everyone must show a photo identification. All ministers of the Gospel, Jewish rabbis, officers authorized to administer oaths in this State, and the chief or spiritual leader of a Native American Indian entity recognized by the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs are authorized to administer a marriage ceremony in South Carolina. Fees range from $50 for county residents to $100 for out-of-state residents. Non-commercial weddings are allowed on public beaches throughout the area, but commercial weddings are only allowed on the handful of oceanfront lots that extend to the high tide line. Both commercial and non-commercial weddings are allowed in public parks in the City of Myrtle Beach with an approved permit. Contact the City of Myrtle Beach Parks Division at 843-9182332 for permits. You must rent a shelter if one is available. Permits for weddings may be denied based on factors including traffic and neighborhood impact.

Held every Labor Day weekend, this family friendly event offers free beach music concerts (practice your shag-dancing skills) and, of course, heaps of Southern-style barbecue. Don’t miss the Saturday barbecue championship when top pit masters from around the county compete in a smoky cook-off. GrandStrandEvents.com Loris Bog-Off Festival Delicious chicken bog is the star of this annual festival, held every October in Loris, South Carolina. The basic ingredients of chicken bog are chicken, sausage and rice, but visitors will have a hard time deciding which delicious variation is the best. Come enjoy the friendliness of this small southern town, as well as plenty of tasty food, entertainment, fireworks and more. lorischambersc.com

Little River ShrimpFest The sounds of cool jazz drifting through live oaks and the smell of fresh-caught shrimp cooking are a combination hard to beat. Visit historic Little River on Columbus Day weekend for this fun festival that offers games for the kids, entertainment, arts and crafts, and plenty of delicious shrimp. littleriverchamber.org Taste of the Town Having a hard time choosing which restaurants to try on your Myrtle Beach vacation? Sample them all! Held every May, this fun festival features live music, arts and crafts, children’s activities and, of course, the delicious blue crab! bluecrabfestival.org

The Grand Strand’s Best Waterfront Dining Located in the historic fishing village of Murrells Inlet, the Marsh Walk is a mile long wooden boardwalk along a natural saltwater estuary. Native Lowcountry wildlife and the vibrant saltwater marsh offer unexpected delight throughout the seasons. Egrets, graceful herons, jumping fish, oyster beds, fresh salt air breezes and the sun glittering across the water are just the beginning of your adventure. Stroll the Marsh Walk and experience the rich history and abundant natural beauty that is Murrells Inlet. From Native American tribes to Spanish explorers and early English colonists, the history and the natural landscape make Murrells Inlet the perfect setting for the Marsh Walk. In the 1800s, pirates sailed our coastline and hid in the Inlet’s winding creeks, waiting to plunder England-bound ships. The locals traveling by train were picked up by steamboats that docked at

Wachesaw River landing and then carried by horse and buggy to their cottages. Many of the steamboats’ cooks settled in Murrells Inlet andopened their own restaurants, giving the area a reputation for flavorful cuisine long ago. Today, the Marsh Walk is in the heart of “the seafood capitol of South Carolina.” While the dining alone makes this a top choice destination, the Marsh Walk also boasts a wide variety of activities for the whole family. You can come for lunch and play all day or come for the day and play all night. Enjoy live music nightly all along the Marsh Walk; dine and dance to everything from rock, piano, country, jazz, alternative and shag. Ocean sightseeing and dolphin watch cruises, dive training, kayaking, scuba diving and parasailing are all available. Boat rentals, jet skis, and chartered fishing trips round out the excitement along the waterfront.

Download the Marsh Walk App! Visit www.marshwalk.com for menus, entertainment and map.

Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday Myrtle Beach is known as the “Seaside Golf Capital of the World”! With more than 100 of the most unique, challenging, and picturesque golf courses in the world, as well as plenty of things to do off the course, Myrtle Beach and the surrounding Grand Strand offers something for every type of golfer. In 1967, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday was founded as a not-for-profit organization to promote golf vacations and golf events. Today, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday includes nearly 100 Grand Strand golf courses and resorts (www.GolfHoliday.com). Many of the Myrtle Beach area’s golf courses host professional and amateur tournaments including the PGA Tour Superstore World Amateur Championship

118

each fall, which is played out on more than 70 different courses throughout the area. In addition, the annual Father & Son Team Challenge attracts nearly 1,600 participants to compete in various categories for three days of gold. Fathers and sons, grandfathers and grandsons, uncles and nephews, stepfathers and stepsons are all welcome. During the summer months, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday sponsors Family Golf Tournaments at various courses. Also, checkout Myrtle Beach area’s “Kid’s Play Free Program,” that allows junior golfers (kids 16 and under) to play for free when accompanied by a paying adult. For a list of participating courses, visit www.GolfHoliday.com.

Top 5 Reasons Myrtle Beach is Golf’s Best Trip Myrtle Beach is golf’s most popular destination. Practically everyone who plays golf has visited the area or certainly knows someone who has. But if not, here are the top 5 reasons Myrtle Beach should be the preferred destination for your next golf trip: 1. “It’s the Golf, Stupid” It’s a golf trip we are talking about and no destination can match the number and quality of courses offered along the Grand Strand. More than 50 area layouts have earned a 4-star designation from Golf Digest and 12 have been ranked among America’s Top 100 public courses in recent years. 2. Everybody Loves a Good Bargain Everyone wants to maximize value, particularly in difficult economic times, and no one does it better than Myrtle Beach. The area has the ability to accommodate just about any golf trip budget. The chance to get away, play golf and blow off a little steam can be therapeutic, and Myrtle Beach makes it possible for everyone. 3. If You Can’t Have a Good Time Here... Unlike some other destinations that roll up the sidewalks at sun down, Myrtle Beach is almost as much fun off the course as it is on. Whether it’s shopping, dining or a night out with the boys, it’s hard not to have fun in Myrtle Beach. 4. Golf SUPERstores The Grand Strand is home to four of the game’s best retail stores. PGA Tour Superstore and Golf Dimensions each have two area locations and have nearly every golf related item imaginable. It’s like putting a kid in a candy store. 5. Everyone is Welcome Face it: rightly or wrongly, golf is perceived as an elitist sport. In Myrtle Beach nothing could be further from the truth. From blue collar to white collar, men and women, young and old, Myrtle Beach, more so than anywhere else, welcomes everyone with open arms.

2013Digest116-119.indd 119

PGA.COM “TOP 9 FAMILY GOLF RESORTS” PGA.com readers voted the Myrtle Beach area as the number two spot in a round-up of the top nine family-friendly golf resorts. The destination was recognized for its plethora of golf resorts, plus the additional activities and offerings that families can enjoy while on vacation.

One-And-Two, Three-And-Four, Five-Six– The Smooth-Stepping Shag

A visit to the northern end of the Myrtle Beach area will certainly lead you to beautiful beaches and bright sunshine, but as the sun sinks into the western sky, strains of beach music will call you to join the smooth, surefooted dancers swaying and swinging to the beat. This is the Shag, the state dance of South Carolina. The Shag originated here in the ‘40s and ‘50s and has been a favorite of young and old

ever since. Twice a year, Shag dancers enjoy a weekend of smooth moves and partying in the Ocean Drive section of North Myrtle Beach – there is even a Junior S. O. S. weekend for the younger dancers! Similar to the jitterbug and swing dancing, the Shag is slower and smoother. When watching the experts on the floor, from the waist up they look calm and relaxed, but their feet seem to defy the laws of gravity. Come join the fun! VisitMyrtleBeach.com

Guide to Myrtle Beach Area Airports The Horry County Department of Airports was created in 1987 to act as an agency of Horry County. The director of airports is appointed by the county administrator. There are four airports managed by the Horry County Department of Airports. We’ve included some additional information below, but for the most up-to-date airport information call (843) 448-1589. Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) The Myrtle Beach International Airport serves as the only commercial airport for the Grand Strand and offers service for private companies. The airport is located just one mile from the ocean in central Myrtle Beach. Currently in expansion phases, Myrtle Beach will grow by seven additional gates with completion of the new terminal, set to open in 2013. Myrtle Beach Aviation This general aviation, fixed-base operator, is located adjacent to Myrtle Beach International Airport and provides fueling and hangaring services. The new 11,500 square foot general aviation terminal is a modern facility designed for the comfort and service of those who use it. www.myrtlebeachaviation.com. Grand Strand Airport (CRE) Located within the city limits of North Myrtle Beach between Highway 17 Business and the Intracoastal Waterway, this airport serves private and corporate aircraft with parking, refueling and maintenance. The full-service, fixed-base operator located at this airport can be reached at (800) 433-8918. Conway-Horry County Airport (HYW) Located five miles west of the county seat of Conway, the Conway-Horry County Airport serves general aviation aircraft with parking, refueling and maintenance. Loris-Twin Cities Airport This airport is located just two miles northeast of Loris on Highway 301 and serves as an unattended airport for public use. The Twin City-Loris Airport serves as an excellent training airport for practice approaches and landings by private aircraft.

Where to ‘Park It’ In the Myrtle Beach Area

March 1 marks the beginning of seasonal parking regulations on Ocean Boulevard. Parking is prohibited on the Boulevard from March 1 through September 30. Short-term parking has been extended to three hours, instead of two. Short-term meters are located mainly near the boardwalk/downtown area of Myrtle Beach. New, more-descriptive meter stickers will tell customers which meters offer all-day parking or short- term parking. The stickers also make clear that it costs just $6 to keep an all-day space. That $6 per day rate is comparable to, or better than, private parking fees. Currently, the parking meters are in effect from March 1

through September 30. Park by phone is also available in Myrtle Beach. Park by phone allows parkers to feed their meters via their cell phones, so they don’t need change. To use Park by phone, a parker simply calls the toll free number shown on the meter. Repeat users are recognized electronically, so that all they need to do is enter their meter number and the amount of time they wish to park. New users can register with their first call or do so online at parkmobile.com. Any parking charges are billed to a credit card along with a 35 cent per use fee. For more information on parking meters and pay stations visit CityOfMyrtleBeach.com/Meters.html. VisitMyrtleBeach.com

A Grand Strand Cultrual Experience Discover some the area’s best art, music and history While the Myrtle Beach area is no stranger to fine arts, music or rich history, new developments and area renovations now provide those looking to go ‘beyond the beach’ with more options. Several area museums showcase the destination’s diverse and interesting history, while the locally-loved Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum features rotating art exhibits and a fantastic permanent collection of antique maps, prints and local artworks. The performing arts shine along the Strand, as well, with the Long Bay Symphony presenting nearly 30 shows per year and the Carolina Master Chorale—an impressive 70-member community chorus—hosting show-stopping concerts throughout the area. Visitors wishing to do a little historical exploration could check out the Myrtle Beach Colored School that served African-American students in the Myrtle Beach area for more than 20 years. The building now serves as the Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum and Education Center and provides a window to the area’s past and a doorway to the future. Located at 900 Dunbar Street in central Myrtle Beach, the historic school is open for tours from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday. On the south end of the Myrtle Beach area, another living history museum can be found at Freewoods Farm, where visitors experience life on an African-American owned farm. A little further south in Pawleys Island is the area’s Gullah Museum that explores this fascinating culture through lectures and authentic arts and crafts. Visitors interested in the history of the Civil War may wish to visit the South Carolina Civil War Museum at 4875 Hwy 17 Bypass South in Myrtle Beach, where Civil War-era firearms, edged weapons,

140

clothing, books and much more provide visitors with a unique glimpse into the past. The site of the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base and the Historic Myrtle Beach Air Force Museum has outdoor exhibits, plaques and more located on the grounds and is located in the popular Market Common area of Myrtle Beach. The Horry County Museum at 428 Main Street in Conway highlights the area’s history through exhibits ranging from quilts to tools used in the activities of daily life on a tobacco or cotton farm to local art. Take it a step further and actually experience what life was like on a “one-horse farm” at the L.W. Paul living history farm just outside of Conway. The beautiful downtown area of Conway offers galleries showcasing the work of local artists, a Gullah shop and glass blowing, while Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet is considered the finest presentation of outdoor sculpture in the world. Created in the 1930s by Anna and Hyatt Huntington, visitors to Brookgreen Gardens are able to view more than 900 works, see indigenous wildlife and learn more about local history. Keep even the youngest visitors happy with cultural experience at the Children’s Museum of South Carolina in Myrtle Beach, packed with exhibits that fascinate children while teaching them more about the natural world. For an evening out, visitors can enjoy both Broadway and off-Broadway plays at Atlantic Stage, the area’s only non-profit theatre. At Uptown, home of the Carolina Improv Company, experience the spontaneity and laughter of improv geared for everyone from the youngest to the oldest members of the family. Conway’s Theater of the Republic just celebrated its 42nd season along the Grand Strand, and recent productions include The Full Monty and Sunset Boulevard.
