Pawleys Island
AN HISTORIC VACATION SPOT Found at the southernmost end of the Grand Strand between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, Pawleys Island is one of the most historic resort communities on the east coast. It was once the summer home to wealthy pre-Civil War rice planters, and there are still twelve residences, which date from the late 1700s to the mid-1800s, intact in the historic district. Pawleys Island is proudly referred to as ‘arrogantly shabby,’ as residents revel in its simple charms and
natural beauty. Those charms rub off on visitors who enjoy the community’s unique shops, restaurants, and slower pace. It’s also home to three of America’s top 100 public golf courses. So, enjoy a walk on Pawleys’ delightful stretch of white beach, or kick off your shoes and lounge in one of the area’s popular rope hammocks which can be found at The Hammock Shops Village on Route 17. African American
CULTURAL HISTORY SITES The Myrtle Beach area has been greatly influenced by its African American heritage and roots that date back to the 1700s. From what we eat, to how we speak, so much of that can be traced back to the African History in the region.
Take an historic tour by visiting these sites: Brookgreen Gardens - The over 9,000 acres are on the site of four former rice plantations. It is home to a Lowcountry History Center and Lowcountry Trail which tell the history of what life was like on a rice plantation. Brookgreen offers several Gullah Geechee programs throughout the year. Sandy Island - Many of the current 120 residents are Gullah Geechee descendants. Today, its 9,000+ acres are considered the largest undeveloped freshwater island on the East Coast, and it’s a hot bed for viewing wildlife. Hobcaw Barony - This 16,000-acre
property is dedicated to research and education. It includes buildings and sites that reflect the lives of African Americans from the early 19th century through the first half of the 20th century.
Hopsewee Plantation – Features Gullah tours, sweetgrass basket demonstrations. Freewoods Farm - Learn about 19th-century life from the perspective of African American farmers. This is a 40-acre, still evolving “living museum” and the only African American historical living farm museum in the U.S. Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum - Artifacts from the
school and the period are on display, and a reference library of African-American history is available to the public.
Charlie’s Place and the Fitzgerald Hotel – Newly restored, this site celebrates the life and business of a prominent African American businessman, Charlie Fitzgerald.

PROJECT Lifesaver Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce helps protect visitors with Autism, Down Syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease who may get lost or wander off. Through Project Lifesaver, lost or wandering visitors with these special needs can be tracked through a personalized wristband that emits a tracking signal. Those who wear the wristband can be quickly located and returned to their families and
caregivers. The chamber has several wristbands that visitors with special needs can use during their stay in the Myrtle Beach area. Project Lifesaver relies on proven radio technology and a specially trained search and rescue team. When caregivers notify the local Project Lifesaver agency that a person is missing, a search and rescue team is dispatched to the wanderer’s
area and starts searching with the mobile locater tracking system. Search times have been reduced from hours and days to minutes. THE MYRTLE BEACH AREA GUIDE TO SWIM AND BEACH SAFETY VISITOR INFORMATION
Check Beach my
FAQ: If there is a swimming advisory at my favorite beach, does that mean water there is generally not safe? No. Short-term swim advisories are for isolated spots at monitoring locations where swimming is not advised. Most advisories are temporary – lasting only a day or two.
South Carolina beach monitoring season begins May 1 and runs through October 1. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) routinely collects water samples at more than 120 locations along South Carolina’s beaches. If high numbers of bacteria are found, they issue an advisory for that portion of the beach.
What is tested in beach water monitoring samples?
Advisories do not mean that the beach is closed. Wading, fishing and shell collecting do not pose a risk. Advisories are often issued after heavy rainfalls when higher bacteria counts are detected and often last less than 24 hours. The advisory is lifted when sample results fall below the limit of 104CFU/100mL.
What’s the best way to determine the most accurate, up-to-date information about the water quality at my favorite beach?
CheckMyBeach.com
Enterococcus bacteria are tested in the samples to indicate presence of bacteria in the water. Elevated levels of these bacteria can indicate possible contamination for a short period of time.
Visit www.CheckYourBeach.com and use the interactive GIS tool to find your beach and check the most recent test results for the area, as well as find information on all area beach access points and amenities.

THE ARTS THRIVE in Myrtle Beach EVERY VACATION NEEDS SOME CULTURE
If you’re looking to go beyond the beach and experience the Grand Strand’s arts scene, you now have more to do than ever. For a calendar of local cultural offerings, go to: www.theartsgrandstrand.org. There, you’ll find information on book signings, theatre, artsrelated classes, concerts, lectures, and much more! The Arts Grand Strand has recently started the area’s first Art Trail with 18 fine art galleries and 3 restaurants participating. The Art Trail stretches the entire 60-mile length of the Grand Strand from Calabash, NC, inland to Conway and southward to Georgetown. A map of the Art Trail can be found on their website, and printed rack cards are available at the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.
Myrtle Beach also has its own art museum! The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum features rotating art exhibits and a fantastic permanent collection of antique maps, prints and local artworks. The performing arts shine along the Strand as well, with the Long Bay Symphony presenting nearly 30 shows per year. The 70-member Carolina Master Chorale, an impressive community chorus, has also been enriching vacations through the power of music. For an evening out, enjoy both on and off-Broadway productions at Atlantic Stage. Conway’s Theatre of the Republic is consistently a local favorite for fantastic theatre productions.
Historic Myrtle Beach Every destination has a history For historical exploration, check out Freewoods Farm, where visitors experience life on an African-American owned farm. A little further south, in Georgetown, you’ll find the Gullah Museum which explores the fascinating Gullah Geechee culture through lectures, unique story quilts, and other authentic arts and crafts. Step back in time to a simpler period free of modern technology at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm in Conway. To learn what life was like for a slave on a plantation, explore the still-intact cabins at Hobcaw Barony. The Horry County Museum focuses on the history, prehistory, and natural history of Horry County, S.C., and educates the public about these subjects through exhibits, outreach programs, and events.
