DESTINATION OVERVIEW
The Beach IS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR YOUR GROUP Miles of beautiful sandy beaches, inviting Southern hospitality and impressive meeting and event facilities are just a few of the many advantages to planning group travel to the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina.
This southern beach destination – known by locals as “The Grand Strand" – boasts a warm subtropical climate and 60-miles of uninterrupted coastline edged by the sparkling Atlantic Ocean. Wide stretches of sand and the sound of waves offer the perfect backdrop for successful and well attended events, compliments of Mother Nature that naturally allow for social distancing. Whether you’re organizing a family reunion, convention, business meeting, sports event or motorcoach tour, the staff of the Myrtle Beach Area CVB is ready to create the experience tailored specifically to your group needs. Group travelers often enjoy the same activities that bring millions annually to The Beach. Time outside of meetings can be spent taking a long meandering walk down Myrtle Beach’s 1.2-mile long award-winning oceanfront Boardwalk and Promenade filled with shops, carnival-like entertainment, dining, beach access, a pier, and the 200-foot-high SkyWheel Myrtle Beach. You may also enjoy
an afternoon round of golf at one of the more than 90 championship courses, many of which offer spectacular oceanside views.
For thrill seekers, Myrtle Beach’s water parks, theme parks, such as the new addition of the Funplex, parasailing, and many other attractions guarantee fun wherever you go. Those looking for a little rest and relaxation can indulge in one of the Grand Strand’s many fantastic spas, relax poolside, or enjoy a shopping trip. Both of our Tanger Outlet centers along with Barefoot Landing, Broadway at the Beach, and Coastal Grand Mall offer exceptional variety and value, while specialty boutiques at The Market Common and the Hammock Shops Village are easy to find and fun to shop. Evenings and dining out with your group are sure to be memorable as well. There are more than 1,800 area restaurants offering a wide variety of tasting experiences using locally sourced produce and seafood. Give your palate a jolt of new, fresh flavors and cuisine ranging from farm-to-table and reel-to-table to Calabash and Lowcountry, often infused with a French, Southern, and/or Asian chef inspired style. In addition to traditional restaurants, the new International Culinary Institute of Myrtle Beach at Horry Georgetown Technical
College offers individuals and groups unique classes as well as teambuilding events and demonstrations including the art of barbequing, wine pairing, and chocolate and pastry creations. If that’s not enough, after enjoying an amazing culinary experience, an evening spent at one of the area’s live theaters is a perfect complement to a great day.
Check out a myriad of award-winning shows at The Alabama Theatre, The Carolina Opry, Legends in Concert and Broadway Theater. Or, enjoy a little magic, comedy, and fun in an intimate setting at the GTS Theatre. There’s also the opportunity to travel back in time andexperience knights and pirates at either Medieval Times or Pirates Voyage dinner theaters. Each group traveling to the area requires an individual and memorable experience, and the Grand Strand’s eclectic and ever-growing mix of activities and accommodations will ensure that happens. Check out VisitMyrtleBeach.com to begin planning your trip today! This guide will help allow you to explore the many facets of our beautiful coastal destination and highlight how The Beach can best accommodate the needs and priorities of your group.

Getting Around THE MYRTLE BEACH AREA

Expediting travel time to the Myrtle Beach area is easy when you fly. Centrally located and convenient to all accommodations and attractions, Myrtle Beach International Airport’s airline partners, Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier, Spirit, Southwest, Spirit, and United, make traveling to Myrtle Beach easy and fast. Myrtle Beach International Airport serves as the area’s only commercial airport, though there are other local general aviation airports serving the private and corporate sectors flying to the Grand Strand. For more information, visit flymyrtlebeach.com
Driving to The Beach
Accessibility is one of the key factors in many groups choosing the Myrtle Beach area. Motorcoach charters and individuals can travel using both US routes 17 and 501, as well as SC 9 that provide direct access to the Myrtle Beach area from Interstates 95 and 20. The 28-mile-long Veterans Highway (HWY 22) offers an additional route from US 501 to SC 17. Carolina Bays Parkway, also known as SC 31, is popular with locals and extends from SC 9 to US 501 and SC 707. There are future plans to extend Carolina Bays Parkway even further south.

In addition, rental companies are available throughout the Myrtle Beach area.

Uber & Lyft are available in the Grand Strand. Car services can be requested, on respective apps, via your cell phone. Download Uber or Lyft and request a driver to pick you up, much like a taxi service. All transactions are handled through the app, so you never have to exchange cash or pull out your credit card.
Taxi Services
The Myrtle Beach area has an efficient and impressive taxi system. The numerous taxi companies each have their own phone number, but nearly all respond to a common dispatcher. This ensures visitors get where they need to go, when they need to.
Train Service
Amtrak train service is available through an in-land station in nearby Florence, SC. Passengers arriving by train may then either rent a car or board a bus to complete the remaining 60-mile trip to the Myrtle Beach area.

WHAT PLANNERS ARE SAYING
“Our clients love Myrtle Beach! It is one destination that we include in our schedule every year and have been for many years. There is no shortage of quality and reasonable lodging, lots of yummy places to eat, excellent entertainment possibilities and of course one of the loveliest beaches in the world! If you haven't tried Myrtle Beach as a destination you are missing out on one of the best!” Dave Baer
Baer Express Tours
“Bill and I want to express our sincere appreciation for the wonderful experience we had last week in learning about Myrtle Beach. The staff of the CVB went above and beyond to assure that our group experienced the flavor and essence of Myrtle Beach!”
Becky Peterson
Executive Director, Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Centers
“For the last 10 years I have been sending groups to Myrtle Beach. There is not another destination I work with than does what these folks do. When they say “Our local experts will assist you with all your group planning needs”, they actually mean it. They make me look really good year after year. My clients think I am a genius. Little do they know it is “My Team” at the Myrtle Beach Area CVB making my trips a big hit!!!”
“The Myrtle Beach Area CVB connected us with various travel resources, multiple hotels, and printing agencies in the area to meet our housing and transportation needs for over 3,500 attendees during our 63rd South Atlantic Regional Conference. This team is to be commended for going over and beyond the call of duty! We would strongly recommend the Myrtle Beach Area of CVB to assist any large group with meeting their goals for future events on the Grand Strand.”
Tom Rush
Utocqua R. Grissett
“I received the “Save the Date” cards for our conference in Myrtle Beach. They are simply gorgeous. You folks have been so kind and generous to provide these cards for our conference as well as giving us permission to use your artwork as our conference theme. Please accept my sincere thanks, again, for all of your assistance. You’ve been a delight to work with!”
“While planning our annual fall meeting of the American Hemerocallis (daylily) Society's National Board of Directors, I had the privilege of working with the staff at the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau. Thanks to their area expertise, their patience and guidance with my ever-changing requests, and their perfectly selected items, there is no doubt that our October meeting will be a great success for our 40 out of town/out-of-state guests.”

“The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau, went above and beyond the call of duty to aid in the support and success of the South Atlantic Shrine Association’s 2016 Fall Festival. This year’s success could not have been achieved without their guidance and involvement and we look forward to working with their team in the future.”
“After being in the travel industry for 45 years and having my own tour company for 16 years, I can honestly tell you that Myrtle Beach is a destination YOU should be bringing your groups to. Over the years it has evolved to the point where it truly does have something for everyone. It is also a very affordable destination and though not a walking city, it is easy to get around and very hard to get lost.”

CONVENTION CENTER
A GREAT SPACE TO MEET & MINGLE IN COMFORT Location
Conveniently located in the heart of Myrtle Beach, the Myrtle Beach Convention Center offers space to “Host Great Meetings.” Just 10 minutes from the Myrtle Beach International Airport, blocks from the ocean, and seamlessly connected to the 400room Sheraton Convention Center Hotel, the Myrtle Beach Convention Center has the technology IT team, culinary options, and professional staff to cater to the needs of every meeting and event planner. The convention center is a perfect venue for association, corporate, education and government meetings, as well as national and regional trade shows, faith-based conferences, concerts, large sporting events, tournaments and more.
Ample Space for Successful Shows
The 100,800 square-foot, column-free exhibit space can be divided into three sections, with the ability to convert one section to an area seat more than 2,500 people, making it the perfect home for general sessions and/or large assemblies. Thirty five-foot ceilings also leave plenty of room to accommodate most exhibits or a production crew’s needs.
A Space for Every Occasion
Our 17,000 square-foot ballroom was recently renovated from ceiling to floor, creating a refreshed, memorable experience at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. This impressive space is perfect for elegant banquets for 1,000 or more guests. The grand ballroom can also be divided to accommodate up to five large meetings simultaneously. Seventeen additional meeting rooms, ranging in size and flexibility, are conveniently located adjacent to the Ballroom and just steps from the Exhibit Hall. Planners requiring an intimate location for a reception will delight in the South Carolina Hall of Fame, which can be transformed into an area of beauty, function and fun in the evenings. Groups desiring a warm ocean breeze sweeping in from the Atlantic Ocean, have no better spot than the convention center’s 30,000 square-foot events plaza. It is the perfect location for outdoor receptions, oyster roasts, barbeques and other activities. It is also an ideal location for press conferences, small concerts and other celebrations.
The convention center’s 11 dedicated docks and drive-in access areas to each hall ensure that every event moves in and out on time and on budget.

THE FUN NEVER ENDS WHEN YOU PLAY AT The Beach Sports tourism remains a top driver of the group sales market for the sixty miles of the Grand Strand. The Myrtle Beach area continues to be well positioned as a destination within the regional and national sports tourism event industry. Combining our picturesque beach location, hotels and attractions with our world-class venues, the future remains bright for continued growth in sports tourism. The venues in the Myrtle Beach region rival any across the county. And the range of sporting events held at these venues runs the full spectrum from basketball to baseball to track and field to volleyball and softball. Non-traditional events such as cornhole, cheer, dance, wrestling and gymnastics are growing and finding the value in bringing their events to Myrtle Beach. These events take over our ball fields and courts, while filling our hotels, attractions and restaurants. And while youth sports remain a growing segment of the sports tourism industry, Myrtle Beach welcomes adult events in the key off-season months. More recently high-profile events such as the Myrtle Beach Invitational and the new Myrtle Beach Bowl have provided our region with marquee ESPN events in the fall season. While attracting fans from across the country to cheer on their favorite
MA 60:01 21/72/11
university, the events also provides live television exposure for the Myrtle Beach area as well.
You cannot be a major player in the sports tourism industry if you do not have the venues to host these events and championships. The John T. Rhodes Myrtle Beach Sports Center, which celebrated their 5 year anniversary in 2020, features over 100,000 sq ft of space that can accommodate 8 basketball or 16 volleyball courts in a flexible indoor setting. The Grand Park Athletic Complex remains one of the most sought-after outdoor diamond complexes on the east coast. The 9 lighted turf fields and 2 natural grass fields remains booked throughout the year with baseball, softball and soccer tournaments. Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium underwent a major renovation and is opened for business. The stadium boasts a world-class outdoor track, a new Daktronics video board, field turf and press box. Adjacent to the stadium is the Ned Donkle complex offering additional baseball/softball fields and a turf field. North Myrtle Beach offers several sports tourism related complexes as well. The North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex is home to 8 lighted natural grass
multipurpose fields as well as 6 lighted baseball/softball fields. Outside of these major sports venues, the Myrtle Beach Convention Center offers 100,000 sq ft of exhibit hall space and is home to cheer, dance, volleyball, e-sports and the annual Beach Ball Classic basketball event. Annually, Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach are home to several road races that take over our streets, providing another unofficial sports venue. And don’t forget about our 60 miles pristine beaches and our Intracoastal Waterway. It’s hard to bring up sports in without mentioning the first official game of the area – golf. With over 70 championship courses, groups and players at any level will find variation in style, location and difficulty. Course designers such as Palmer, Norman and Robert Trent Jones are just a few of the greats. It’s no wonder why so many call the Myrtle Beach region “Golftown USA!” Take a look at the following pages to learn more about great sports facilities in the area and an impressive list of some of the best golf courses in the nation. “Year after year, our coaches, players, & parents constantly tell us simply how much fun they are having in the area. With tons of attractions, shopping, entertainment, and miles of sandy white beaches there is always something for the entire family to enjoy. Along with the greatest facilities and amenities the city has to offer, it is truly a win-win for all involved. Our basketball tournaments have grown in size every year since coming to Myrtle Beach. NTBA is now hosting 800+ teams a year in the Myrtle Beach area and the MBACVB is a big reason why we have grown so much. Any event operator should highly consider bringing their event to the city.”
John Whitley
“Myrtle Beach has been a great home for our volleyball tournaments. With the addition of the Myrtle Beach Sports Center we have doubled the number of teams attending. The abundance of great hotels, restaurants, and activities make it easy to run a successful event!” Alex Sing

MAKE GROUP TRAVEL FUN AT The Beach
Whether you are visiting for work, sports competitions or reconnecting with friends and family, The Beach provides a plethora of optional activities. When time allows, our beach is your playground. While a trip to The Beach is an easy choice, the fun extends to our thousands of activities and attractions. Exploring the Myrtle Beach’s great outdoors and discovering the picturesque Carolina landscape is always a favorite activity for groups. Two state parks offer everything from hiking trails to picnic areas to fishing piers while one of the largest exotic reptile parks in the world can be found at Barefoot Landing. Brookgreen Gardens offers a more tranquil atmosphere where your group can explore the most significant American outdoor collection of figurative sculpture in the world. Miles of nature paths decorated with indigenous South Carolina flora and fauna provide a unique and scenic experience. During the warmer months, take a break from the beach and experience the thrill of racing down a waterslide at one of the local waterparks, or visit one of the area’s many amusement parks for a thrilling roller coaster ride. To get the best view in town, a visit to the 200-foot Myrtle Beach SkyWheel is a must. And a little friendly competition is always fun at one of over 50 mini-golf courses. You can even form a mini-golf tournament for your group! If sports are more your speed, your group could head over to the TicketReturn.com field for baseball with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans or take a trip to the Broadway Grand Prix or The Track, where guests can experience driving small race cars. With so many options to choose from, it’s easy to make the most of downtime in Myrtle Beach.

Life on the Water EXPERIENCE
WATERSPORTS, FISHING, TOP AQUATIC ACTIVITY OPTIONS Life on the water is good here, partly because we have so much of it! Relaxing alongside the Atlantic Ocean in a beach chair with a cold drink is a given while at The Beach, but there are so many other activities on the water to try. Beyond the ocean, the beautiful marshes, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the scenic Waccamaw River provide a variety of water-centric activities. A guided kayak tour is a great way to see wildlife. For an adventure, rent a jet ski, windsurf or kite board and enjoy the ride! A speedy airboat is a fun way to get around, and parasailing will send you toward the heavens for a thrilling new vantage point of the Grand Strand. Tackle a wave on a banana boat or enjoy a dolphin cruise. If you’re seeking romance, indulge in a sunset cruise—some even provide dinner and live entertainment on-board. A guided kayak or canoe tour is a great way to see wildlife, and surfing lessons are sure to keep younger ones busy. Last but not least, fishing is one of the area’s most popular activities. Whether you cast a net in the marsh, fish from one of the many piers, or choose a deep-sea excursion to the Gulf Stream, you’re sure to have a good time.

T he Beach EXPLORE FINE ARTS, THEATER, HISTORY & MORE! Add some of the area’s best art, music and history to your event. Many groups traveling to the Myrtle Beach area enjoy offering cultural exploration options to their members. The Grand Strand’s variety of fine arts, music and rich history provide plenty for those looking to go beyond the beach. The Horry County Museum showcases the destination’s diverse and interesting history, while the Franklin G. BurroughsSimeon B. Chapin Art Museum features rotating art exhibits and a fantastic permanent collection of antique maps, prints and local artworks. New to Brookgreen Gardens in 2021 is the inaugural exhibit in the new Rosen Galleries. This exhibit includes paintings, sculpture, etchings, lithographs, and drawings by great 19th, 20th, and 21st century artists in the fields of botanical and zoological illustration, sporting art, and other fine art depicting the purposes of Brookgreen Gardens – sculpture, plants, animals, and history. The performing arts shine along the Grand Strand as well. The Long Bay Symphony presents nearly 30 shows per year, as does the 70-member community chorus, Carolina Master Chorale. Groups can enjoy both on-and off-Broadway productions at Atlantic Stage and Conway’s Theatre of the Republic, both local favorites for fantastic theater productions. Some production companies will even offer discounts for large groups attending performances, so be sure to ask. Groups interested in a little historical exploration should check out Freewoods Farm and experience life on an African-American owned farm. A little further south in Pawleys Island is the Gullah Museum, which explores this region’s fascinating culture through lectures and authentic arts and crafts. Guests interested in the history of the Civil War may wish to visit the South Carolina Civil War Museum. Or, find out what life was like on a local farm during the early 20th century by spending time at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm.

Your group will look forward to meals ranging from live dinner shows and popular themed restaurants, to locally caught seafood and decadent Southern fare. Some of the area’s most popular restaurants offer one-of-a-kind waterfront views along with their carolina coastal style cuisine and seafood. Groups traveling a little further south of central Myrtle Beach will find the Murrells Inlet area, known as the seafood capital of South Carolina. Lowcountry favorites like shrimp and grits are always popular with group travelers, while the area’s local ‘farm-to-table’ cuisine is found in restaurants along the Grand Strand, ensuring locally sourced fresh food is served to their tables. We also offer a large sampling of international flavors including; Caribbean, Moroccan, German and Italian cuisine. Traditional American cuisine is also available, with a number of popular steakhouses that keep visitors coming back again and again. One of the area’s trendy tapas bars or hip sushi restaurants fits the bill perfectly for those searching for a larger group atmosphere. But, if a low-key, private setting is what you have in mind, Myrtle Beach’s cozy bistros or upscale dining restaurants provide the perfect atmosphere. No matter the craving, the Myrtle Beach area’s wide variety of restaurants ensures all appetites will be appeased. In the following pages, you’ll find plenty of information to help you start planning the culinary experiences that will shape the perfect group meeting or convention in the Myrtle Beach area. WORLD-CLASS ENTERTAINMENT LIVES AT The Beach
The Myrtle Beach area showcases the best music, dance, comedy, dinner theater, celebrity concerts and movies in a variety of venues. The Carolina Opry, now in its 32nd season, continues to earn national accolades for its music, comedy and dance show. Its sister production, Time Warp takes audience members on a musical tour of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. The theater also welcomes a series of celebrity guests and, in November and December, the theater is transformed to a winter wonderland for The Carolina Opry Christmas Special. The popular Alabama Theatre hosts live concerts throughout the year, and audiences continue to love their nightly musical dance revue, ONE The Show. Myrtle Beach is home to one of the Legends in Concert locations, bringing fresh entertainment and new shows on a regular basis. Elvis sightings are always possible at this original tribute show. Another perfect option for groups wishing to enjoy dinner with a show is an arena-style dinner theater. Take to the open seas with Pirate’s Voyage Dinner & Show, Dolly Parton’s interactive and entertaining dining attraction. Patrons will receive a savory pirate meal as they watch swashbuckling buccaneers battle it out on the high seas. Or, take a trip to Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament where audience members travel back in time to the 11th-century. Serfs & Wenches keep the feast moving as Knights joust on horseback to win the attention and favor of the royal princess. Crowd-pleasing and exceptional live entertainment offers something memorable for everyone in your group. Check the following pages to discover just how many intimate theater options you have in Myrtle Beach.

ENJOYING The Beach SAFELY
With tens of thousands of people swimming in the ocean and pool daily during the summertime, the Myrtle Beach area has an excellent safety record. But it's important to take proper precautions when near water. Here are a few water safety tips to make sure your visit to our many beaches or pools is as fun and safe as possible.
Beach Safety Tips •
•
• • • • • •
• • • •
•
74
Look for and obey all beach safety flags. If you are unsure of the meanings of each flag, please reference the signs posted at the nearest beach access. Swim in areas with a lifeguard. Listen and follow lifeguard's directions and warnings. Swim with a buddy Swim sober Don't fight the current (and signal for help!) Don't float where you can't swim Watch small children closely Don't swim or surf within 75 yards of piers or where people are fishing Don't dive into the surf (protect your neck!) Leash your boogie board or surfboard Ask a lifeguard about ocean water conditions People with open wounds or compromised immune systems should avoid public bodies of water Know the local rules and laws (visit the municipality's website for more info)
Pool Safety Tips •
•
•
•
•
•
Watch Children - It is important to not drink alcohol, look at a phone, or nap while your children are swimming. Teach Kids to Swim - It is recommended that your child take swimming lessons prior to going on vacation where pools and the beach are the main attractions, even if they teach basic skills in the water. Use Life Jackets - Do not use air filled or foam toys, such as water wings, noodles, or inner tubes as they are not designed to keep children safe from drowning. Enter Water Feet First - Jumping or diving into too shallow water can cause injuries that are preventable by knowing the depth of the pool. Never Swim Alone - Even for confident swimmers, it is important to use a buddy system to prevent an emergency. Learn CPR - Everyone, regardless if you have children, should learn CPR for emergency situations.

Located off Farrow Parkway near Myrtle Beach International Airport, this former U.S. Air Force base was reimagined into a village concept with lakes, bridges, top restaurants, local shops and much more. You could walk for hours and never see it all.
Broadway at the Beach
Speaking of shopping and entertainment, you will want to check out Myrtle Beach’s Broadway at the Beach. Anchored by the Ripley’s Aquarium, Wonderworks, and many more attractions, shops, dining and entertainment venues, Broadway is South Carolina’s most popular attraction. The Myrtle Beach Grand Strand is the Golf Capitol of the World and home to more than 90 golf courses. What better way to enjoy one of our sunny afternoons and socially distance throughout the year.
Enjoy an outdoor stroll along the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, named by Conde Nast Magazine as one of the Top Nine Boardwalks in the US. The 1.2 miles of boardwalk offers excellent views of the Atlantic Ocean and easy access to fun shops and our Myrtle Beach SkyWheel.
