Moon habitat named 2023’s ‘Coolest Thing Made in Illinois’

SPRINGFIELD – The Rosenberg Moon Habitat was named 2023’s “Coolest Thing Made in Illinois” Wednesday in a contest hosted by the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association.

The habitat is manufactured by Ingersoll Machine Tools in Rockford, in collaboration with the Institut auf dem Rosenberg of Switzerland. At a height of 23 feet, the structure is designed to house two people at a time on the moon and is the world’s tallest single-piece 3D printed polymer structure.

“The habitat represents the very best of our state’s manufacturing industry, where creativity and determination turn dreams into reality – including living on the moon,” Mark Denzler, President and CEO of the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, said in a statement. “We are proud of the wide variety of products featured throughout this year’s competition, and hope this contest shines a light on the important work taking place on factory floors across Illinois every day.”

The annual “Makers Madness” contest is a bracket-style competition to celebrate manufacturers across Illinois. This year’s winner was announced at the Governor’s Mansion Wednesday and the contest is sponsored by Comcast Business.

The Rosenberg Moon Habitat beat out an initial field of 250 entries and emerged on top of three other finalists including the Drug Terminator, a portable drug incinerator designed to safely destroy prescription drugs or confiscated narcotics.

The habitat also defeated 17th Street Barbeque Sauces, which come in various flavors, and the 77GHz Radar for Driver’s Assistance and Automated Driving, which is a compact sensor that provides more precise warnings for drivers.

“Making the coolest thing today just means we can keep making the coolest things in Illinois tomorrow, and for future generations,” Jeff Ahrstrom, CEO of Ingersoll Machine Tools, said as he accepted the award Wednesday.

The governor used the opportunity to praise Illinois’ economic milestones, including receiving eight credit upgrades, surpassing $1 trillion in annual economic value and paying off the state’s short-term debt.

“We’ve incentivized growth in Illinois and it is working,” Pritzker said in his speech. “Our great state has always been a land of innovation and today, because of you, Illinois is home to over 18,000 manufacturers that employ over 600,000 residents up and down the state.”

Last year’s winner was Rivian’s all-electric R1T truck. Previous winners include a Self-Regulating Traffic Signal Heater by Termico Technologies, which heats traffic signals so they remain free of snow or ice, and the 797F Mining Truck by Caterpillar, the world’s largest mechanical truck. Food, nutrition benefits safety net for 1.7M Illinoisans

More than 1.7 million low-income Illinoisans depend on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), based on the most recent data from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS). As of March 1, the federal government reduced those benefits to pre-pandemic levels.

In Illinois, SNAP participants saw their benefits reduced anywhere from $95 to $250 per person per month, according to the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS). IDHS stated the reduction impacted 2 million people and 1 million families.

USDA data covers fiscal year 2020 from September 2019 through February 2020. That fiscal year, 1.71 million people in 877,028 families received SNAP benefits across Illinois. The per-person benefit averaged $116 per month in the state.

Nationwide, more than 41 million Americans receive food-buying benefits through SNAP. The program provided on average about $260 per month to individuals and $490 per month to families, according to USDA FNS data.

Nearly half of the Illinois SNAP participants — 747,958 — are younger than 18 years old. Another 238,006 are elderly, while 145,491 SNAP recipients were disabled and younger than 60.

Of SNAP participating families in Illinois, 79% had income levels at or below poverty. A

total of 33% of Illinois SNAP families received incomes from wages or work.

Since April 2020, all Illinois SNAP families received both the regular monthly benefit and the emergency SNAP allotment that ended March 1.

Each SNAP family’s benefits are determined by factors including household size, income and deductions. The benefit decreases varied, depending on each household’s size and financial circumstances.

“We understand and recognize that many Illinois residents have counted on these additional emergency food benefits,” IDHS Secretary Grace Hou said in a statement. Hou said her agency was working with food pantries to help them meet clients’ needs as they adjust to reduced benefits because of federal policy change.

On average, 9.4% of Illinois families lacked access to sufficient food between 2019 and 2021.

Reductions in SNAP benefits will also make an economic impact.

Each month in Illinois, an average of $199 million in SNAP benefits were issued in fiscal year 2020. About 9,257 retailers across the state accept SNAP benefits.

This story was distributed through a cooperative project between Illinois Farm Bureau and the Illinois Press Association.

What goes into a retirement ‘paycheck’?

During your working years, you generally know how much money you’re bringing in, so you can budget accordingly. But once you’re retired, it’s a different story. However, with some diligence, you can put together a “paycheck” that can help you meet your income needs.

Where will this paycheck come from?

Social Security benefits should replace about 40% of one’s pre-retirement earnings, according to the Social Security Administration, but this figure varies widely based on an individual’s circumstances.

Typically, the higher your income before you retire, the lower the percentage will be replaced by Social Security. Private pensions have become much rarer in recent decades, though you might receive one if you worked for a government agency or a large company. But in any case, to fill out your retirement paycheck, you may need to draw heavily on your investment portfolio.

Your portfolio can provide you with income in these ways:

• Dividends – When you were working, and you didn’t have to depend on your portfolio for income to the extent you will when you’re retired, you may have reinvested the dividends you received from stocks and stock-based mutual funds, increasing the number of shares you own in these investments. And that was a good move, because increased share ownership is a great way to help build wealth. But once you’re retired, you may need to start accepting the dividends to boost your cash flow.

• Interest payments – The interest payments from bonds and other fixedincome investments, such as certificates of deposit (CDs), can also add to your retirement income. In the years immediately preceding their retirement, some investors

Procrastination Killed the Cat!

Procrastination killed the cat! A catchy title that makes you think. But procrastination can kill the cat, your dreams, your opportunities, and everything else that you waited to feed. I’m positive that if you wait to feed a cat for 30 days or a year, you will most likely kill the cat. It’s the same when we don’t work on (feed) our goals, dreams, and opportunities by procrastinating. They tend to fade away or die. Procrastination delays and kills our goals, and even the day-to-day things-to-do list. Why Not do those tasks today?

Procrastination is a common behavior that affects everyone by delaying or postponing a task for another reason typically for one that’s more pleasurable or doing nothing or avoiding it. Procrastination can hold you back and lead to missed deadlines, incomplete work, and decreased productivity.

The four biggest reasons why we procrastinate include fear of failure or making a mistake, lack of motivation, time management, and distractions. People tend to put off things for tomorrow because of fear of failure or making a mistake. We hope that with more time, we can prepare more or have less anxiety. They lack the motivation to get started so they don’t start. People with poor time management skills tend to prioritize by spending time on less important easier tasks. Distractions are all around us vying for our attention as we are constantly drawn away from the important task at hand.

Why do something today, when you can do it tomorrow?

Ecclesiastes 11:4 Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap. (NIV). God instructs us not to be idle but to sow so we shall reap. Procrastination keeps putting off the inevitable, which only makes it worse. We only have limited time so

use your time wisely. Scripture reminds us of the importance of being diligent and doing work with a sense of purpose and urgency. Proverbs 10:4 “Lazy hands made for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.” (NIV).

To overcome procrastination, you need to identify the root causes of your behavior to postpone or avoid tasks and develop effective strategies against it. It’s important to develop certain personality characteristics. Three key characteristics are self-discipline, perseverance, and responsibility. Self-discipline allows you to control your emotions, actions, and thoughts. Perseverance provides the mental toughness, resilience, and ability to continue working on a goal, even when faced with obstacles, setbacks, and failures. Responsibility requires taking ownership and being accountable for your actions and the resulting outcome.

Here are some effective ways to kill procrastination:

1. Create a to-do list. Get a notes app or paper and write down all the things you must do regardless of significance. Then prioritize them in order of importance with deadlines. Go through the list from urgent to least.

2. Set a timer or alarm. Using a timer breaks down your work into manageable chunks of time which provides a deadline to motivate you and makes you more productive.

3. Eliminate distractions. Turn off the television, podcast, and phone, get off the internet and social media, and stop trying to find something else to do besides your urgent and need-to-do tasks. Create a work environment that is free from distractions. What things in your life do you keep procrastinating on and waiting until “tomorrow”? Kill procrastination today by starting a task now. Y? Why Not! ywhynotshow@gmail.com

increase the presence of these interest-paying investments in their portfolio. (But even during retirement, you’ll need some growth potential in your investments to help keep you ahead of inflation.)

• Proceeds from selling investments –While you will likely need to begin selling investments once you’re retired, you’ll need to be careful not to liquidate your portfolio too quickly. How much can you sell each year? The answer depends on several factors — your age, the size of your portfolio, the amount of income you receive from other sources, your spouse’s income, your retirement lifestyle, and so on. A financial professional can help you determine the amount and type of investment sales that are appropriate for your needs while considering the needs of your portfolio over your lifetime.

When tapping into your investments as part of your retirement paycheck, you’ll also want to pay special attention to the amount of cash in your portfolio. It’s a good idea to have enough cash available to cover a year’s worth of your living expenses, even after accounting for other sources of income, such as Social Security or pensions. In addition, you may want to set aside sufficient cash for emergencies. Not only will these cash cushions help you with the cost of living and unexpected costs, but they might also enable you to avoid digging deeper into your longterm investments than you might like.

You may be retired for a long time — so take the steps necessary to build a consistent retirement paycheck.

Heart Smart

On this week leading up to Good Friday and Easter, I encourage you to think of two simple words. These words are found in Ephesians 2.

The chapter starts with this, “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world…” And then comes the two words: “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ … and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

Think of where we’re at at the beginning of Ephesians 2 — dead in our sins. Lifeless. Unable to save ourselves. And later in the chapter? We’re saved. We’re made alive with Christ. We’re raised up with him and seated with him in heaven. What a transformation!

And the hinge that makes this possible are those two simple words: “But God.”

This Holy Week is all about those two words. We were dead, but God. We fall short, but God. We were without any hope, but God.

Whatever heaviness burdens you this week, know that God is there. He’s proved that he’s a turn-it-around God as Jesus made his way to the cross. Jesus lived a perfect life, but God willed for Him to die, so that God’s people would be saved.

MINISTER: REV. GERALDINE COLVIN SUNDAY SERVICE.......................10:00 AM

Jesus’ “but God” was filled with rejection and sacrifice so that ours might be filled with forgiveness, love, and resurrection.

You were dead. You were forsaken. You were lost. You were helpless. And maybe as you read this, you’re still feeling those things. BUT GOD, because of his great love, has offered you the free gift of salvation. He offers you life.

May God bless your Good Friday and Easter observances this week.

Pappas: Cook County property taxes due April 3

Property owners have less than a week to pay First Installment bills for 2022 property taxes, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said today.

Taxes must be paid by Monday, April 3, 2023, to avoid late charges imposed by state law.

Payments made online at cookcountytreasurer.com before 11:59 p.m. on April 3 will be recorded as on time.

“The majority of property owners are taking our advice and paying property taxes online,” Pappas said. “It’s the hassle-free way to pay from the comfort of your home. Plus, you get an emailed receipt after you pay.”

First Installment bills are typically due March 1, but state lawmakers had to extend the due date because Second Installment bills for 2021’s taxes were late last year. Nearly 1.8 million Tax Year 2022 First Installment bills were sent out in early March.

To make a payment or download a copy of your tax bill, visit cookcountytreasurer.com:

• Select the blue box labeled “Pay Online for Free”

• Search by property address or enter your Property Index Number

• There is no fee if you pay from your bank account

You can also pay your property tax bill:

• At any Chase Bank location

• From a checking or savings account at more than 200 participating community banks

• By mail with a U.S. postmark no later than April 3, 2023

• At the Treasurer’s Office, 118 N. Clark St., Room 112, Chicago, Illinois 60602

Partial payments are accepted. Late payments are charged 1.5 percent per month, as currently mandated under state law.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST AT AL POST 8141

CALUMET CITY: Pictured are some of the guests at American Legion Post 8141--Claudia Paolone, her friend Paul, Ricky Dominiak, Judy Dominiak (Ricky’s Mom) and Jim and his sister Diane Osterello. Just out of the picture is Rich Dominiak. The Legion hosted a Pancake Breakfast and all proceeds benefitted Veteran’s programs and events.

CESARE AND HIS FAMILY TAKE IN THE GRANT PARK EASTER EGG HUNT: All set to get out and gather easter eggs is Cesare and his children, who live nearby and regard the Easter Party as a rite of spring passage. “I want my kids to have the same fun I had growing up,” he noted. “My parents took us to all to the local Easter Parties and I have pictures of them all! Great fun!”

***

PANCAKES BY HARRY TRIPPLET AND COMPANY--Guests took advantage of Post 80 in Whiting and a full course breakfast of pancakes, biscuits and gravy, sausages, eggs, and a special treat, a chocolate butter dressing for our pancakes, courtesy of Harry Tripplet. Pictured here are Eddy Marco of Dyer, Indiana and Janet and Simon Pavosevic of the East Side. Janet is a well known (now retired) bartender at some of the most popular lounges in Whiting, like the Center Lounge, and others on the East Side. When asked what is the most important trait for a bartender to have, Janet noted, “remembering faces and names and lots of discretion.”

ALMOST TIME TO COLOR EGGS AND TRY FOR PRIZES: The Beecher Community Center was the location for the annual Easter party for the kids in the far suburban village. Pictured here are Roman Mathy, three and a half, along with his Mom, Morgan Whorrall, Grandmother Leaan Corbin and Jess Kelson. Roman donned a pair of sunglasses and tried to decide what color pen he would use to creatively color an egg for the Easter Bunny to judge. In all some 200 kids took to the community Center for the Easter Party which included games, treats and some neat prizez.

THE DOMINIAK FAMILY GETS AROUND

: Rich and Judy Dominiak of Calumet City and some of their family at Steves Lounge in Hegewisch for the Friday Fish Fry. Only one more Friday, April 7, 2023 left during this Lenten season 2023 to take advantage of the wonderful Steve’s Fish Fry. Pictured along with Rich and Judy are their sons, Ricky, Joe and Dan along with Joe’s wife Aggie. The family tries to get together as often as possible for a festive meal somewhere local! ***

BABY GOATS CHARM THE KIDDIES

AT EASTER PARTY: Luckily, the weather cooperated Sunday April 2, 2023. The Sollitt Staff put up a temporary barnyard and brought in the baby goats for the children to “Ohh and Ahh over.” They are 10 week baby goats, and as we can all see, the kids were enchanted by them! Sollitt Tap, 11830 Sollitt Road is in an unincorporated area of Kankikee County and is the only business in that area in the community of Beecher, Il In addition to the Eaaster Egg Hunt that day there was a petting zoo (seen here) and music by Michael Satarino.

***

TIM VON ALVER AND HIS NEW PUPPY: The four month Beagle came to live with Tim and his family in Beecher just today, Palm Sunday. He was introducing her to his friends and promised the dog would be treated “just like family.” In days gone by the Beagle was considered the most ‘family friendly’ dog in the universe and was advertised as such by none other than the American Kennel Club!

***

PASSOVER – APRIL 5, 2023

Passover or the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called ‘Pesach’ in Hebrew, traditionally begins in late March or early April. Considered one of the oldest in history, this holiday is the first day of the Jewish ritual of Passover, which lasts seven or eight days. The festival celebrates the freedom and exit of the Jews from slavery in Egypt over 3,000 years ago.

On February 17, 2023, a client came to our office in Merrillville, Indiana. He brought a bill from a hospital in Chicago for $9,626. I made copies of the papers and went to my office to start checking it. Then, I asked the client to join me in my office so that we could make phone calls together.

First, we phoned his Medicare supplement insurance company. I told them about the bill and asked if they got the bill or not. They had not received any claim for the client this year yet. Then, we phoned the hospital in Chicago together. In that call, I learned what the problem was. The hospital filed the claim with Medicare and the client’s old insurance company. I corrected them and worked with them to change their files so that the claim could be filed correctly.

It was a simple error that was probably caused by someone at the hospital being rushed or not paying attention. Getting the client’s file with the hospital will allow the

hospital to file the claim correctly. Once the claim gets to Medicare and the correct insurance company, our client should have little or nothing to pay on the bill.

All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. The Medicare system is not perfect and the people working in the Medicare system are not perfect. This agency helps our clients with such medical bill problems at no charge to demonstrate that we really do care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not help clients like this, maybe you should switch to use our insurance agency.

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered through book stores or online.

Real Estate Questions & Answers

Question: We are thinking of selling our home. We have lived here for 30 years. Will we have to pay taxes on our gain?

Answer: You can sell your primary residence and be exempt from capital gains on the first $250,000 if you are single and $500,000 if married filing jointly. All you have to do is live in the house at least 2 of the last 5 years. Exemption is only available once every 2 years.

Plus, you can add your cost basis and costs of any improvements that you made to the home to the $250,000/$500.000 amounts.

Example: A married couple, purchased a home for $500,000 in 2015. The neighborhood experienced tremendous growth, and home values increased significantly. Seeing an opportunity to reap the rewards of this surge in home prices, they sold their home in 2022 for $1.2 million. The capital gains from the sale were $700,000. As a married couple filing jointly, they were able to exclude $500,000 of the capital gains, leaving $200,000 subject

to capital gains tax. If they had sold for $1.0 million, there would be no capital gains tax. $1.0 million sales price - $500,000 original purchase price = $500,000, which would be exempt from taxes.

Always consult a tax professional, as a double check and because of the mention of cost basis and improvements mentioned earlier.

This is an excellent incentive to invest in real estate, as up to a $500,000 gain is not taxable.

And as Mark Twain once said “A person doesn’t know how m:uch he has to be thankful for until he has to pay taxes on it.”

Except in selling your home!
