Natural Awakenings: 30+ years connecting readers with holistic health solutions
This month’s edition has some serious gems for anyone even remotely interested in exploring a few pathways to creating lasting positive change in their lives. If you’ve ever felt stuck in familiar routines or bogged down by past experiences, “Beginner’s Mind: A New Perspective on Life,” by Carrie Jackson, offers a refreshing shift in perspective. By embracing the Zen concept of shoshin—a beginner’s mind— we learn to approach life with openness, curiosity and the courage to see things anew.
For those living with chronic health conditions, the idea of “starting fresh” can feel out of reach. In “The Vital Role of Self-Care for Individuals with Chronic Conditions,” by Gabriel Jean Joseph, we are reminded that self-care isn’t just an act of kindness—it’s a necessity.
Of course, with the new year comes the familiar, often dreaded pull of resolutions. But if you’re tired of seeing good intentions fall by the wayside, “From Failed Resolutions to Real and Lasting Change,” by Benjamin Blackett, is a must-read. This piece highlights how lasting change isn’t about willpower; it’s about tapping into the power of our subconscious mind and changing it, consciously. By shifting our mindset, focusing on self-awareness, and taking small intentional steps, we can create lasting transformation—well beyond January.
A Special Thank You to Our Sponsors:
The overall theme of this edition is quite timely for me as I’ve been doing a daily meditation practice the past few months that is offered by Dr. Joe Dispenza. The practice, which aligns with his book Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, encourages participants to open their minds. Opening first to the notion that we have the power within ourselves to change fundamentally and second, to follow the practice of changing one’s mind on a dime when we find ourselves headed in a less than desirable direction.
The key for me, when successful, has been swiftness of reaction time, or the amount of time it takes for me to consciously recognize I’m going down the rabbit hole of an old negative thought pattern. While I’m not always successful in changing my mindset during those times, I realize that lasting change takes lots of practice and that practicing consistently is the golden key.
Too long of a story for this space, but I was recently left with a quote from a total stranger, who I came to know as Jeff Platt, after a brief encounter in a parking lot: “Change is the only thing in life you can count on. If you’re not impacting the change in your life, the change in your life is impacting you.”
The synchronicity of this random encounter was an aha moment that helped solidify the feeling that I’m on the right track, at least some of the time! One day at a time…
To a Happy and Healthy New Year for All!

Vision Therapy Can Correct Eye Turns — No Surgery Required.
Most people are told surgery is the only solution for an eye turn (strabismus). But science offers another option. Research shows that for certain visual conditions, non-invasive vision therapy can be an effective first-line treatment— often reducing or eliminating the need for surgery. ••••••••••••••••••
At Sunshine Vision, we address the root cause: the brain-eye connection. No cutting. No repeated surgeries.

Harnessing the Power of Whole Plant Extracts for Holistic Hair Care
Botanic Providence, founded by herbalist and formulator Jo-Anna Cassino, now offers a wide range of botanical hair care products that highlight the power of whole plant extracts. With a focus on sustainable, plant-based products, Cassino’s creations are designed to nourish both the body and soul.
One standout product is the Deep Emerald Hair Serum, infused with rosemary, blue tansy and lavender in a base of argan and abyssinian oils. This serum is not only a frizz fighter, but is also deeply nourishing for the scalp and hair.
Botanic Providence’s hydrosols, delicate, plant-based toners, capture the essence of plants through distillation and provide gentle hydration. “Misting your hair and skin with these hydrosols; before applying the serum creates an alchemical experience,” Cassino explains. For a moisturizing, texturedefining boost, she recommends combining the serum with one of her fragrant glycerites. “It’s a dynamic duo that hydrates and nourishes.”
In addition to this hair care line, Botanic Providence offers over 100 herbs, teas, accessories and other botanical beauty products. Cassino’s holistic approach to formulation reflects her commitment to plant-powered self-care.

Rebalance, Re-Energize and Rejuvenate with Colon Hydrotherapy
The Internal Wellness Center, led by Liz Marcano-Pucillo, a Certified Colon Hydrotherapist, offers a holistic approach to health through professional colon hydrotherapy. Since 2008, she has been helping clients improve, rebalance and rejuvenate their well-being by focusing on the connection between colon health and overall vitality.
“Menopause is a natural phase of life that profoundly affects women’s physical, mental and emotional well-being, yet it often comes with confusion, stigma and limited access to reliable information,” says board-certified health coach and owner Catherine Walter, NBC-HWC. “Women that are navigating menopause or preparing for it will gain access to expert knowledge and practical solutions tailored to their unique challenges, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health.”
Additional speakers include Dr. Anila Jha, OB/GYN, Carol Sullivan, MS, RD, CSO, LDN, and Deb Gowen, RN, CNM. Attendees will benefit from connections they make with all the expert speakers on hormone therapies, lifestyle shifts and holistic approaches, and from the support of other women in the community that are also experiencing similar life changes. Cost: $15, plus Eventbrite fees. Event location:1794 Massachusetts Ave., Lexington, MA. For more information or to register, visit tinyurl. com/menopause-therapies-unlocked.
“Colon health plays a fundamental role in overall wellness,” explains Marcano-Pucillo who is certified through the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapy (I-ACT). The colon absorbs water, nutrients and salts, while also hosting beneficial bacteria that help maintain balance in the body. “A clean colon can enhance digestion, boost energy, and contribute to improved overall health,” she suggests.
Colon hydrotherapy (sometimes called a colonic) is a cleansing process of the large intestine (colon) using purified water. She uses The Angel of Water system, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved method that’s considered to be the most advanced and client-sensitive in the industry, ensuring a safe and hygienic experience. During each session, water gently cleanses the colon, promoting natural elimination and enhancing overall digestive health. The system allows for the ultimate in client comfort, sanitation, privacy and dignity.
“Whether you’re seeking to rejuvenate your digestive system, improve hydration or simply cleanse your body, colon hydrotherapy can be an essential part of your wellness routine,” adds Marcano-Pucillo.
Cost: Initial session with consultation: $140 or return therapy session: $100. Location: 150 Wood Rd., Ste. 403, Braintree, MA. For more information or to make an appointment, call 781228-6915 or visit InternalWellnessctr.com. See ad, page 12 and Resource Guide, page 34.

Age-Related Balance Issues Studied
In a study published in the journal PLOS ONE, 40 adults over 50 completed gait, grip strength, knee strength and balance tests. The gait test consisted of a self-paced walk back and forth on an eight-meter-long walkway. The strength tests were performed seated on a custom-made device that isolated the wrist and knee of the participant’s dominant side. For the balance tests, participants stood on both legs with their eyes open for 30 seconds, then on both legs with their eyes closed for 30 seconds. With eyes open, they also stood on their dominant leg for 30 seconds, then switched to their non-dominant leg for another 30 seconds.
The researchers found that the onelegged test on the nondominant leg showed the highest rate of decline with age. A diminishment in the ability to complete this one-legged balance test, especially for those that cannot balance for five seconds, indicates a significant propensity for falls that hospitalize millions of seniors each year.
Disadvantages of Food Pouches for Children
Sales of children’s food pouches with plastic spouts have increased by 900 percent since 2010 and now outsell jarred baby food purees. They are convenient, cost-effective and easy for kids to use without assistance. Traditionally, parents have spoon-fed pureed food from a jar for the first few months of a baby’s life. The pouches contain a single ingredient or a mix of vegetables, grains, yogurt and meat.
A 2019 study in Nutrition Today found that the food pouches they examined contained significantly more added sugar and fruit juice concentrate than jarred and other packaged toddler foods. Healthcare professionals have raised concerns that overreliance on the pouches could interfere with nutrition; longterm food preferences; dental hygiene, because the soft food sticks to teeth before being washed away; and speech and language development, as children miss the opportunity to manipulate their tongue and jaw when swallowing lumpy, textured foods. Children reliant on the smooth, sweet taste delivered by the pouches may also develop aversions to natural fruits and vegetables.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming Unlocks Personal Growth and Well-Being
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a psychological technique aimed at improving personal growth, communication skills and overall well-being. It serves as a powerful tool for fostering both personal and professional advancement, enabling individuals to reach their full potential.
Developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, NLP has gained widespread recognition across clinical, business and management sectors for its ability to influence change and
improve communication. Research, such as a study published in Britain’s Counselling and Psychotherapy Research Journal, demonstrates that individuals undergoing NLP-based therapy experience significant improvements in psychological symptoms and life quality when compared to a control group.
By recognizing the interconnectedness of our thoughts, language and behavior, NLP offers practical techniques to overcome mental barriers, address the root causes of issues—such as depression and anxiety—and boost emotional resilience. The focus is on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors, empowering individuals to break through obstacles, shift their mindset and achieve lasting personal growth. With tailored sessions led by a trained practitioner, clients work through challenges in a supportive environment, realizing their full potential.
Lata Patel, a Certified Medical Hypnotherapist (CMH) and Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist (CCht) with Soul Speaks Therapies, offers powerful therapeutic solutions, including NLP and hypnotherapy, to help individuals improve their emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. With over 20 years of experience, Patel specializes in working with clients dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, trauma and more.
Location: Waterlily Wellness, 0 Governors Ave., Ste. 2, Medford, MA. For more information or to schedule a free, 20-minute, online consultation, call Patel at 617-444-9236 or visit SoulSpeaksTherapies.com. See Resource Guide, page 35.
The Link Between Mold Exposure, Blood Sugar and Weight Gain
by Jessica Liggero, HHP, FDNP, SIBO Specialist
Weightgain, obesity and diabetes are becoming too common in today’s world. In some cases, these conditions can be traced back to over consumption of highly processed foods and a sedentary lifestyle. Further, there are those that maintain a healthy lifestyle yet still find themselves gaining weight and unable to lose it despite their best efforts.
Mold exposure or mold sickness can occur when a person breathes in mycotoxins from a water damaged building. Mycotoxins are a poisonous substance that specific species of mold produce, but not all mold produces mycotoxins. Mold can grow within 48 hours of water damage and anything over 50 percent humidity will accelerate its development.
Mold can be found in many places. A person can be exposed to mycotoxins in their home, work, gym, church, a restaurant, hotel or even their car. Air conditioning units and HVAC systems are also common sources of exposure. Sometimes a physical space or, most commonly, a basement, will have a musty smell. In most cases, this is a sure indication of the presence of mold. In other situations it can be harder to identify mold, as it can hide within the walls or behind furniture. A person could be regularly exposed to mold and not even be aware of it. A person could also have an inability to detox mold and have it in their system unknowingly for years.
There are myriad mold sickness symptoms, and different people can have different reactions to mold making it highly difficult to identify mold exposure as the primary source of chronic illness and weight gain. Some common symptoms are GI issues, brain fog, fatigue, insomnia, asthma, sinus infections and weight gain. Mycotoxins cause stress in the body which can create higher cortisol levels which can lead to an increase in glucose and A1C and could result in insulin resistance and pre-diabetes.
Mold exposure can also trigger other gastrointestinal concerns such as SIBO and candida overgrowth which further imbalance the gut microbiome and alter metabolism, potentially leading to weight gain. Recurring SIBO or chronic GI symptoms such as bloating, nausea, diarrhea, constipation and food sensitivities are frequently traced back to mold exposure. When a person experiences sudden weight gain and/or blood sugar issues without any change to diet and lifestyle, it’s possible that mold exposure could be the problem. Fortunately, a person could restore their health and lose weight simply by detoxing mold.
Jessica Liggero, the owner and founder of Rebalance Your Routine, helps people improve gut health and detox mold by using functional labs and making holistic modifications to diet and lifestyle. For more information, a free initial consult or to make an appointment, call 617-459-8114, email Jessica@RebalanceYourRoutine.com or visit RebalanceYourRoutine.com. See Resource Guide, page 35.
Elephants Mitigate Climate Change
African forest elephants, a smaller cousin of the savanna elephants that inhabit the dense rain forests of central Africa, are natural climate-change mitigators. They shape their forest habitats by dispersing seeds from large, carbon-storing trees through their dung. Some of the seeds of trees responsible for the greatest carbon sequestration do not germinate until they are digested by the elephants.
As they forage for food, African forest elephants trample the dense underbrush, which promotes the growth of taller, denser carbon-capturing trees. Because the litter left from foraging is not easily decomposed, more carbon is accumulated in the soil. A 2019 report in Nature Geoscience estimates that one forest elephant can increase net carbon capture capacity by almost 250 acres, the equivalent of one year’s worth of emissions from more than 2,000 cars. African forest elephants are critically endangered as a result of illegal poaching and habitat loss.
Drones Reveal Lost Cities
The Silk Road was a series of ancient trade routes that once connected China to the Roman Empire. Research published in the journal Nature reported the discovery of two fortified cities—Tashbulak and Tugunbulak—in the mountains of southeastern Uzbekistan, 7,000 feet above sea level. Urban centers above 6,000 feet are rare.
The discovery is important because it had been assumed that ancient trade routes avoided the mountains of Central Asia. Archaeologists used light detection and ranging equipment (LiDAR), a drone mapping technology, to create a detailed map of these large urban centers, which included watchtowers, fortresses, complex buildings and plazas.
Quantum Energy Wellness
Generating the Energy to Heal
by Wendy Nadherny Fachon
Lyanne Perras’ shift from running a health insurance agency to owning and operating the Quantum Energy Wellness healing center has been a rewarding transition. Recalling her past, she says, “I was witnessing increasing premium costs and drastic cuts in benefits at the same time that I was watching the decline of health in our state. I was feeling unfulfilled and stressed out in this work, so I had to make a change.”
Diagnosed with celiac disease in 2000, Perras eventually sought to heal herself by switching to clean, organic foods. In 2012, she attended the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and became a Certified Health Coach. She also completed Level I Reiki training, which brought her more in touch with the healing energy she held within her own body.
In 2022, Perras learned about the Enhanced Energy System (EESystem) while watching an interview between Jason Shurka, founder of UNIFYD Healing, and Dr. Sandra Rose Michael, holistic healer, integrative biophysicist and inventor of the True Bio-Scalar Fusion Technology. The EESystem generates scalar waves that optimize, energize and harmonize the cellular energy within the human body. UNIFYD Healing’s vision was to establish a global network of public healing centers and help those in need around the world, by making the technology more accessible, affordable and available to everyone. While the technology had been available to the highly wealthy for 20 years, knowledge of the technology was finally becoming public. UNIFYD already had 15 centers, and Perras became excited about the idea of setting up a center in Rhode Island. First, however, she had to do more research. The nearest center was in New
Jersey and seats were already booked for six weeks in advance, so she had to make a reservation and wait. When she entered the EESystem for the first time, she was moved by the calmness within the space. Every person in the room was relaxed, content and happy. She spoke with the owners about the technology, business challenges, customer testimonials and even customer complaints.
Perras placed her order for a 24-unit system in September 2022 and opened Quantum Energy Wellness on May 1, 2023. The space resembles a small movie theater. Four towers of computers are positioned and calibrated to generate a beneficial balance of energy throughout the room. Each tower has six color screens, and each screen displays a different set of vibrant colors and lines of code that move at varying speeds up or down the screen, emitting photons of light and scalar waves. Zero-gravity chairs provide comfortable seating. The client sets a healing intention, then settles back, lets their mind go and enters a deep state of relaxation.
“Our bodies have an amazing capacity to self-heal,” says Perras. “When you cut your finger, eventually it heals on its own. The EESystem supports your body’s own natural healing capability. Like a wireless battery charger, the EESystem provides the energy your body’s cells require to repair mitochondrial and DNA damage, reversing effects caused by a multitude of toxic exposures.”
Perras enjoys sharing client stories. “An 80-year-old woman from Maine, diagnosed with a cancerous tumor, said, ‘I know this stuff works.’ She wanted to integrate scalar wave therapy with nutritional therapy. She traveled to visit her sister in Rhode Island every weekend for a period of four months, and she slept overnight in the EESystem. Her body responded well and her scans showed no signs of the cancer.”
One skeptical man, after spending two hours in the EESystem, said, “I don’t know what I just did, but I have no knee pain. I’m a believer now.” Perras also talked about a father who brought his two young sons to sit with him in the EESystem. They sat while engrossed in their portable video games. After a third visit, the family got a call from one of the son’s teachers commenting on his improvement in behavior. She reported, “He’s paying attention and making wonderful contributions to the class.”
After her first one-hour session, another client wrote a lengthy testimonial listing the benefits she received, which included decreased stress, pain relief, increase in mobility, reduction in head tremors and elimination of a headache. Perras is quick to caution new clients, “The results are not always so instant. The EESystem requires multiple sessions, a commitment to healing and supportive lifestyle changes. Come in with an open mind and a clear intention, and you’ll see how this works.” People can read more testimonials and locate some 200 centers through the nationwide network at UnifydHealing.com.
Location: 693 Quaker Lane, West Warwick, RI. For more information or to book an appointment, call 401-228-9100 or visit QuantumEnergyWellness.net. Learn even more at eesystems.com. See ad, page 3 and Resource Guides, pages 35, 36 and 38.

From Failed Resolutions to Real and Lasting Change
by Benjamin Blackett
Every year, New Year’s resolutions are met with hope and determination; yet, most fail by the end of January. This isn’t from a lack of motivation or willpower, but rather from our inner narrative, which accounts for 95 percent of our brain’s activity, sabotaging our conscious efforts to change.
Understanding the Subconscious Mind
The subconscious mind governs our habits, emotions and automatic responses. It’s like an iceberg, where the visible portion—the conscious mind—represents only 5 percent of our mental activity, while the submerged part drives most of our decisions and actions. Unless we address these ingrained patterns, superficial resolutions are unlikely to succeed. The necessary heart-centered approach to lasting change begins with adopting the mindset of the person we aspire to become. Instead of focusing on statements like, “I’m going to lose weight,” ask, “What would a healthy, vibrant person do? What daily choices would align with that life?” This perspective shift encourages action rooted in possibility rather than limitation.
Start With Noticing
The first step in shifting subconscious patterns is self-awareness. A simple bodyawareness exercise can help connect us with the present moment:
1
Close the eyes and notice the sensations in the feet, then move upward through the legs, torso and arms.
2 Focus on the heartbeat, recognizing that it beats without our conscious control.
3
Pay attention to the hands, face and even the tip of the nose, bringing awareness to one’s physical presence. This practice helps anchor us in the present where we can more easily notice our thoughts and feelings as they arise.
From Awareness to Action
Once awareness is cultivated, identify areas of longing and discontent in one’s life. What do I truly want? Ask this question addressing these four life quadrants:
Health and Well-Being: What does optimal health mean for me? Define whether it’s the energy to play with one’s kids or the stamina for a 10-mile daily run.
Relationships: Am I seeking deeper connections, peace in existing relationships, or a loving intimate partnership?
Vocation: Does my work align with my values and passions? What would I love to do with my free time? What does abundance look like for me?
By clarifying our vision, we move beyond vague goals to something deeply personal and meaningful, empowering ourselves to follow through in creating a life we love.
Crafting a Vision for Change
Imagine stepping into one’s desired life. For example, if the goal is to exercise regularly, think about why this matters. Perhaps the vision is that of skiing, dancing or playing with grandchildren. Then ask: What routines would this version of me follow? How would I prioritize my time? Now, align daily actions with this vision. Start small; set a daily intention to walk for 10 minutes or prepare nourishing meals. Consistency matters more than grand gestures.
The Power of Support
Accountability is essential for meaningful change, as it helps provide clarity that individuals often cannot achieve on their own. Coaching plays a significant role in this process by offering the structure and support needed to reprogram subconscious habits, making transformation more accessible and sustainable. Finding a coach or support group helps with navigating challenges and celebrating progress, ensuring that change feels attainable and rewarding.
Why Resolutions Fail—and How We Can Succeed
Traditional resolutions often fail because they stem from self-criticism rather than self-love. People set goals to “fix” themselves, focusing on perceived inadequacies. This negative mindset undermines our efforts. Instead, shift the attention away from what we want to eliminate and toward what we want to create. For instance, replace “I’ll stop eating junk food,” with “I’ll enjoy nourishing meals that energize me.”
The new year offers a chance to reimagine one’s life—not through fleeting resolutions, but by cultivating awareness, clarifying our desires and aligning our feelings and incremental actions with the person we wish to become. Real change happens incrementally, as life coach and personal development expert Mary Morrissey states, “Every baby step will take you all the way to the top of Mount Everest, if that’s the direction you’re headed.”

Understanding the Health Implications of Silver Fillings A Guide to Mercury Exposure
by Candida Castillo, DMD, CAGS, FAGD
Mercury amalgam fillings, commonly called silver fillings, are found very commonly in both children and adults. The material that composes these types of dental fillings is made from a mixture of mercury, silver, tin and copper. Some mixtures contain as high as 55 percent mercury. In the last decade, research has shown the alarming health implications silver fillings have in the body
due to their toxicity. Understanding these potential health implications is important in order to make informed decisions when undergoing dental procedures.
Mercury Exposure and Its Health Risks
According to the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology (IAOMT), mercury is a known neurotoxin, and
this poison is recognized as a chemical of major concern because it poses a dangerous threat to public health. Most human exposure results from fish consumption or dental amalgam reports the National Institutes of Health and the IAOMT. Amalgam releases mercury vapors throughout its lifecycle, especially when the dentist places the amalgam in a tooth, but it can be intensified by the number of fillings and other activities such as chewing food or gum, brushing teeth, teeth-grinding, and by consumption of hot liquids. Mercury is also known to be released at a higher dose during the removal of dental amalgam fillings according to the Campaign for Mercury Free Dentistry and the IAOMT.
Adverse health effects that can be associated with mercury include fatigue and weakness, headaches, cognitive issues (brain fog, memory loss), mood changes (anxiety, depression, irritability, difficulty concentrating), digestive problems, metallic taste in the mouth, systemic inflammation, hormonal imbalance and cardiovascular problems. Toxic effects of mercury exposure can present as a combination of symptoms that may change over time.
The potential effects of silver fillings on the body vary by individual. An array of co-existing factors influences this personalized reaction to dental mercury, including the presence of other health conditions. The number of fillings in the mouth, dental habits and the immune system of an individual can all contribute to different symptoms and levels of toxicity, too. While some individuals react very poorly to low levels of mercury exposure, others might experience subtle or non-specific symptoms.
Managing Mercury Exposure and Safe Amalgam Removal
Mercury accumulates in the body, and any amount of mercury taken into the body should be considered hazardous. The effects of mercury exposure are even more insidious because it can take many years for symptoms of mercury poisoning to manifest, especially with low-level and chronic exposure. It’s important to prevent and minimize exposure to mercury from silver fillings when other biocompatible options are available.
While mercury silver fillings have been widely used in dentistry for over 150 years, concerns about the potential health risks associated with exposure have been extensively studied by the IAOMT and the International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine (IABDM). The recommendation is to use a SMART protocol for safe amalgam removal or the removal of metal fillings with mercury in them. It should be done by an experienced, certified and accredited dentist to ensure it is done correctly and to minimize health hazards and side effects that can occur with amalgam removal.
Dr. Candida Castillo owns Bio Dental located at 2148 Mineral Spring Ave., in North Providence, RI. She works closely with patients on both their dental and overall health. She is a biological/holistic dentist who is passionate about promoting the critical connection between mouth and body. Using the latest advancements in technology to make diagnoses more accurate and treatments highly efficient, the practice uses the SMART protocol and mercury-free alternatives for dental fillings. Beginner’s Mind A New Perspective on Life
by Carrie Jackson
The new year brings a fresh focus on growth and forward thinking. An intentional way to harness this is to adopt the Zen Buddhist idea of shoshin, or beginner’s mind. This approach guides people to experience life with curiosity and openness, helping them let go of old patterns. It is a way of being that encourages practitioners to abandon preconceptions, embrace the world with a sense of wonder and see things from a more optimistic perspective. By examining and releasing old ways of thinking, expressing gratitude and incorporating different
practices, the mind, body and heart open to novel opportunities.
The Beginner’s Mindset
“The idea of being open to the situation comes up repeatedly in meditative traditions,” says Steve Rogne, owner and director of Zen Shiatsu, in Evanston, Illinois. He notes that in his practice, shoshin is an essential part of shiatsu, a form of massage therapy that uses gentle pressure to stimulate the body’s acupressure points and meridian channels. Shoshin can aid in unblocking stagnant energy and
harmonizing the flow of qi, or vital energy, in the body.
“As a situation arises, we have our natural responses, which may include wanting to change what is happening. Another perspective is to ask, ‘What if I accept things the way they are?’” Rogne explains. “Accepting situations for the way they are is the foundation from which we can respond. It’s like a preparation for action without being the endpoint. We can simultaneously be open and respond mindfully.”
Learning to accept what is happening can also help us break old patterns of
thinking and reacting. “There is a very common human dynamic to move toward the things we want and away from the things we don’t want; however, this can lead to a fixed response pattern that limits our growth,” says Rogne. “In shiatsu, we help people to recognize those patterns and find the balance between active response and trusting with faith. This trains us to listen to our inner wisdom and relax into outcomes that aren’t what we prefer.”
Mindfully changing patterns can open us up to new experiences that we had previously shut out. “You may find a willingness to move forward in new relationships, even though you’ve experienced that relationships can be painful, or perhaps you find the willingness to speak up even though there’s a chance you won’t be heard in the way that you want,” Rogne notes. Keeping a receptive mind helps to open us up physically, as well. “In both shiatsu and the shoshin mindset, we trust that every person’s body is already working on its own healing. When we let go of our fixed holding patterns, the internal circulation is freed up, leaving the best possible opportunity for the body to regain all the healthy rhythms of the organs and reduce conditions such as chronic pain,” Rogne asserts.
Optimism
Having hope and confidence about the future is essential in cultivating a beginner’s mind, helping to counter some of the fear and intolerance that can undermine our lives. “A shoshin principle is that there is not
anything fundamentally wrong with us or with the world. This allows us to move forward with positive faith and engagement,” says Rogne.
“Optimism is a belief that good things will happen and that things will work out in the end,” says Victor Perton, founder of the Centre for Optimism, an Australian-based think tank dedicated to fostering realistic and infectious optimism around the world. “With optimism, we enter each experience expecting fresh possibilities, guided by a sense that there’s something meaningful to discover.”
This positive outlook has myriad benefits. “Optimism nurtures healthy longevity and acts as a powerful protector against major health threats like heart disease, cancer and dementia,” says Perton. “Optimism also lowers the risk of cognitive decline, as optimistic people tend to be more socially and physically active, helping stave off dementia and age-related memory loss.”
A 2022 study of more than 150,000 racially diverse, older women published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that the most optimistic women were healthier, lived 4.4 years longer than the least optimistic women and were more likely to live past age 90.
A positive outlook can help navigate the stress and anxiety of life. “Optimism doesn’t mean ignoring the challenge; it means approaching it with the belief that solutions are possible. Optimism and a beginner’s mind work together in this way, helping us to stay open to new paths, resilient in the face of setbacks
and appreciative of life’s small, beautiful details,” opines Perton.
Incorporating small, intentional practices into our day can help us cultivate optimism. “Smiling with genuine warmth—even at strangers— can shift our outlook, and asking others, ‘What’s the best thing in your day?’ brings a positive energy to conversations,” says Perton. He also recommends simple grounding practices like gardening, yoga and meditation to nurture curiosity and positivity, noting, “Through these small habits, optimism becomes a daily practice and, in time, a personal superpower for resilience and joy.”
Reframing Our Outlook
Reflective practices encourage us to explore our goals with a fresh outlook. “Journaling is a practice that is just for you, and you’re not intending to share it with anyone else,” explains Shawn Brown, a Baltimore-based wellness facilitator and yoga teacher who helps clients find a path to being their authentic selves. “It really allows you to examine what is popping up and what you are curious about. This might be learning a new language or starting a new yoga practice. When we look at things as a beginner, we are open to what we are truly interested in.”
A regular gratitude practice also helps bring us back to a place of grounding. “When we tap into gratitude, it expands our propensity to be creative and allows us to drop into the present moment. This is where we live, but when we think of the future or ruminate on something
that happened in the past, we are pulled out,” says Brown. She encourages clients to take breaks throughout the day and recall a person, place or experience for which they are grateful. “Think about something that makes the corner of your mouth turn into a smile,” she suggests. “It can be as simple as gratitude for your partner who bought dog food or a neighbor who moved a package off the porch. This brings us back into our lives right now, and that’s where the beginner is.”
Cultivating a sense of play can also tap into a shoshin mindset. “As adults, there’s a need to have a goal or expected result in any situation. When you’re a beginner, you don’t have a specific outcome because you’re just learning. Play, especially with kids or an animal, is free-form engagement without the need to get it right or check something off our to-do list. Releasing the need for control and perfection opens us up and expands us for so many other options and possibilities,” Brown says.
Brown encourages her yoga students to be open in the way they
approach their practice. “Coming into a pose in a different way can give us a new experience of it,” she says. “My approach to yoga is not that we’re trying to do the posture, it’s that we’re trying to feel the posture. It’s a mirror of our being and can indicate if you are feeling strong, tired, energized or wobbly. Rather than attaching a label of good or bad, you just notice, and that opens us up.”
Especially in the new year, Brown urges clients to replace “I have to” with “I get to,” which presents more of a growth mindset. “This is the time to reframe our goals,” she points out. “Trying something new, like taking a West African dance class instead of your regular spin class, shakes up the routine and keeps your mind and body learning. You get to be pushed out of the comfort zone, and that’s where the magic happens.”

Applying Shoshin to Everyday Life
by Carrie Jackson
Kalika Yap, a Los Angeles-based serial entrepreneur, author, coach and podcast host, offers these tips to cultivate shoshin, or beginner’s mind:
• Acknowledge wisdom and smarts, then set them aside. While it is okay to recognize our knowledge and experience, it is also important to consciously set aside preconceptions before approaching a task or problem.
• Ask open-ended questions. Replace statements with questions, such as: “What if we tried this other way?” or “How might we solve this differently?”
• Embrace curiosity. Approach each day with a learner’s mindset and seek out new experiences and perspectives.
• Practice active listening. Value the input of others, regardless of their level of experience, and listen to understand, not to respond.
• Reflect and adapt. Regularly reflect on experiences and what has been learned, and be willing to adapt the approach based on new insights.
• Encourage team creativity. Emphasize the importance of a beginner’s mindset within the team and create an environment where team members feel safe to share new ideas.
• Welcome failure as a learning opportunity. View failures as opportunities to learn, grow and analyze what went wrong to see how to make improvements next time.
• Stay humble. Approach every situation with humility and a willingness to grow, and remember that there is always more to learn.
Exercise With a Smile Turning Workouts Into Playtime
by David J. Sautter, NASM (CPT, FNS, PES), ACE (SCS)
When it comes to exercise, many people think of rigid routines, grueling workouts and strict schedules, but joyful movement can make fitness fun, flexible and something to look forward to. It could be as simple as walking through the park, dancing in the living room or playing outside with the kids. Unlike traditional exercise routines that feel like obligations or chores, a joyful approach to fitness focuses on engaging in activities that feel good both physically and mentally.
“Movement does not have to be intense or complex; however, it must
be intentional and innate,” says Katia Mashni, a health-and-wellness coach and registered dietitian/nutritionist in Michigan. “When you find and engage in an exercise program you enjoy, you are far more likely to stick to it and adopt it as part of your lifestyle because it makes you happy.” A 2020 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health of more than 2,300 adults found that those engaged in moderate and high levels of activity had significantly higher life satisfaction and happiness than those with low activity levels.
Fun Fuels
Fitness Success
Fun is a powerful motivator when it comes to fitness. A 2020 review of more than 2,800 studies and papers by researchers at Victoria University, in Australia, found that when people had fun exercising, they were significantly more likely to consistently exercise. By regularly engaging in our favorite activities, we can create a healthier relationship with fitness. A study published in Frontiers in Psychology of more than 200 participants involved in
different levels of activity found that after four weeks, active participants had higher levels of happiness, life satisfaction and self-esteem.
Adding Joy to Workouts
• Listen to music. An energizing playlist of favorites is a surefire way to boost a walking, running or strength-training routine.
• Exercise with friends or family. Increase the fun quotient by turning a gym workout or outdoor hike into a social event.
• Try something new or revisit a childhood favorite. Explore activities such as biking around the neighborhood, hulahooping in the backyard or swimming at a local pool or beach. “I encourage people to get curious,” says Courtney Pelitera, a dietitian with a passion for sport and performance nutrition. “Maybe you loved swimming in high school, or you have always wanted to take your dog out on a hike, or the pickleball leagues popping up everywhere sound like fun to you. Try it out! We all start somewhere, and being new to something might even bring you into friendships with others who are also new.”
• Dance around the house. Turn household chores into a dance party by moving to the rhythm while cleaning or cooking.
• Play with pets. Get active by running, walking or playing fetch with the dog or by creating a fun obstacle course to do together.
Releasing the Guilt and Pressure
Many people feel judged or intimidated when it comes to fitness. Embrace these strategies to break free from the pressure to exercise perfectly or to follow an intense workout routine.
• Let go of perfection. Focus on progress, not perfection. Every bit of movement counts, and it’s okay if goals or milestones are not achieved right away.
• Set a realistic pace. Whether starting or returning to fitness, it is important to honestly evaluate exercise readiness. Joyful movement is about doing what feels right for the body.
• Avoid comparisons to others. Everyone’s fitness journey is different, and trying to match others can take the joy out of it. Celebrate personal achievements, no matter how small.
• Focus on fun, not performance. Place less emphasis on the quality of the exercise movements and more on how pleasing those efforts are.
• Choose comfortable environments. Whether a solo walk in nature, a quiet yoga session or dancing at home, choose settings that feel relaxing and happy.
• Dress for comfort. Wearing feel-good workout clothes adds confidence and reduces self-conscious discomfort during exercise.

Improving Insulin Sensitivity Naturally
by Dr. Gary Kracoff
Insulin resistance occurs when the body’s cells become less responsive to insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps cells absorb glucose from the bloodstream for energy. As a result, glucose builds up in the blood. Insulin resistance can lead to prediabetes, characterized by slightly elevated blood sugar levels, and eventually Type 2 diabetes, where chronic high blood sugar and insufficient insulin production occur.
Common symptoms include fatigue, increased hunger, difficulty losing weight, frequent urination, excessive thirst and both high blood pressure and cholesterol. Tests to diagnose insulin resistance or Type 2 diabetes typically involve measuring fasting blood sugar and Hemoglobin A1c, which reflects blood sugar levels over the past three months. These tests help determine whether a blood sugar issue exists and guide appropriate treatment.
In response to insulin resistance, the pancreas produces more insulin, but over time, the body may struggle to keep blood sugar levels in check. This can lead to elevated blood sugar, a hallmark of prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance is also linked to metabolic syndrome, weight gain, chronic inflammation, and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, blindness and amputations.
Metformin, a first-line prescription drug for Type 2 diabetes, lowers blood sugar by reducing liver sugar production, decreasing intestinal sugar absorption, and activating AMPK, an enzyme that regulates energy balance. Side effects can include gastrointestinal discomfort, such as diarrhea and nausea, and it may affect thyroid function in some individuals.
GLP-1 medications mimic the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1. Used to treat Type 2 diabetes and obesity, they stimulate insulin secretion, suppress glucagon release, delay gastric emptying, and improve insulin sensitivity. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, injection site reactions and, in rare cases, pancreatitis. Many insurance companies do not cover these drugs for weight loss, and their cost can range from $800 to $1,100 per month.
Berberine and Dihydroberberine are two natural supplements that have shown promise in managing insulin resistance and stabilizing blood sugar. Berberine, found in over 500 plants, enhances insulin sensitivity, regulates glucose metabolism, and supports heart health. It works by improving insulin effectiveness, increasing glycolysis, slowing carbohydrate breakdown, and promoting beneficial gut bacteria. Its side effects are generally mild
and include digestive discomfort.
Dihydroberberine (DHB), the active metabolite of Berberine, is five times more bioavailable, offering better absorption and fewer gastrointestinal side effects, especially when combined with sunflower lecithin. DHB improves insulin sensitivity, reduces blood lipids, boosts adiponectin (a protein that enhances glucose uptake) and activates AMPK. It’s more potent than Berberine and can be an effective alternative for managing insulin resistance, blood sugar and weight loss.
Fasting blood sugar and A1c should be checked by a doctor before the decision to pursue any therapeutic options is made. Early intervention is crucial in managing insulin resistance before it requires prescription medication. Prescription diabetes medications should not be stopped or ever replaced without medical advice.
Dihydroberberine benefits:
• Improves insulin sensitivity
• Improves insulin resistance, helps with insulin sensitivity
• Supports GLP-1 activity, aids in weight loss
• Lowers oxidative stress and inflammation, is a potent antioxidant
• Reduces leaky gut
• May help reduce the buildup of fat in the liver
• Aids bile and bilirubin secretion
• Supports autophagy and healthy aging
• Lowers bad LDL cholesterol

The Vital Role of Self-Care for Individuals with Chronic Conditions
by Gabriel Jean Joseph
There is an increasing acknowledgment that individuals suffering from chronic conditions must take charge of their health and actively participate in self-care practices. Chronic conditions, which include enduring health issues such as diabetes and heart disease, require continuous management. Out of all the hours available in a year, individuals with chronic conditions typically spend just a fraction of that time interacting with healthcare professionals. The majority of their time is spent on maintaining their health, preventing illness and managing conditions independently.
Self-care refers to the actions taken to enhance or sustain one’s health. It encompasses healthy practices such as proper nutrition, regular physical activity and adherence to prescribed medications. For those with chronic conditions, self-care is particularly
important to enable them to lead more fulfilling lives despite their health challenges.
A significant aspect of such an approach involves managing health through three fundamental steps: promoting health through positive habits, monitoring symptoms to identify issues early and managing illnesses by attending to symptoms, enabling individuals to respond promptly if there is an issue with their health.
Barriers and Complexities in Self-Care Research
Research on self-care has significantly increased since 1946. A review of PubMed indicated that by 2015, there were more than 2,400 articles addressing the topic of self-care. Despite this growth in awareness of the topic, several challenges persist. One major issue is the inconsistent use of terminology like “self-management,” “self-monitoring”
and “self-care” which are often used interchangeably, which can possibly lead to confusion.
Another challenge is the complexity of self-care. Factors such as stress, depression and emotional wellbeing can impede a person’s ability to engage in self-care. Research indicates that even mild depression is associated with diminished efforts. An individual’s perception of their health can have a strong impact on their self-care behaviors. Additionally, the influence of others, including family members and healthcare providers, in facilitating self-care is an essential area for future research.
Harnessing Technology to Enhance Health Management
The application of technology in assisting individuals with health management has become more prevalent in recent years. Tools like mobile applications and online platforms are currently aiding people in tracking their health expectations and monitoring symptoms, while others adhere or facilitate monitoring physical activity and maintaining motivation. These advancements are particularly beneficial for individuals with chronic illnesses requiring continuous management by providing reminders for medication, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The integration of technology in self-care practices is anticipated to expand as more nations implement policies that promote eHealth or digital health initiatives, according to the World Health Organization. These resources empower patients to become more proactive in their health management.
Building Resilience and Managing Stress
An additional critical component of self-care is resilience, defined as the capacity to recover from challenging circumstances. For individuals with chronic conditions, this ability is vital, particularly when faced with stress, such as job loss or critical issues that arise, which can disrupt their health management routines. Resilience helps individuals to maneuver obstacles and remain committed to self-care, even during turbulent times.
The Future Outlook
Enhancing self-care for individuals with chronic conditions necessitates an emphasis on the obstacles they encounter and the development of strategies to facilitate improved decisionmaking. The field of self-care research is expanding, with innovative approaches, such as prayer;, meditation; reading an insightful book; getting a massage, facial or manicure/pedicure; finding an affirmation and repeating it; or learning grounding techniques like walking barefoot, squeezing clay, noticing all of our senses; treating ourselves with kindness and compassion; or simply wearing cozy clothes and unwinding.
The integration of technology and other methods to bolster resilience show potential for future advancements. By empowering individuals and their caregivers and promoting proactive health management, we can elevate the quality of life for those affected by chronic illnesses. An increased emphasis on self-care is likely to yield improved health outcomes and contribute to a more robust and healthier community.

Advancing a Couple’s Fertility
Natural Solutions for Women and Men
by Madiha Saeed, M.D.
The prospect of parenthood can bring a range of emotions to couples trying to conceive—from excitement and jubilation to worry, frustration and sadness. According to the World Health Organization, one in six people worldwide experience infertility in their lifetime. Many couples hoping to conceive turn to costly medications and painful procedures designed to manipulate hormones, help with ovulation issues and prepare a woman’s body for pregnancy. In addition to researching such medications and procedures, couples should explore natural alternatives that nurture and support their ability to conceive. “Fertility is not just about hormones,” says Nashat Latib, a certified functional medicine doctor
specializing in natural fertility. “Consider what is going on in your whole body.”
“Males and females are equally at the root of fertility struggles, and sometimes the roadblocks can come from both sides,” observes Aumatma Simmons, a naturopathic doctor, endocrinologist and author of Fertility Secrets: What Your Doctor Didn’t Tell You About Baby-Making. “It is essential to pinpoint the root causes of fertility problems.”
For women, fertility rates naturally decline with age, from a 25 to 30 percent chance of pregnancy in their early-tomid-20s to about a 5 percent chance by age 40. Other health concerns such as ovulation issues, endometriosis, uterine fibroids and polycystic ovary syndrome
can complicate conception and the ability to carry a baby to term.
When fertility issues arise, often the focus is placed on women, but about half of the cases can be attributed to the men.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 12.8 percent of men aged 25 to 49 experience infertility, and the rate is rising. Factors like low sperm production, poor sperm quality, oxidative stress, blockages preventing sperm release, undescended testicles and cancers contribute to male infertility. Other health problems, including diabetes, infections, hormone imbalances, autoimmunity and tumors, can impact both men and women.
Rainbow Nutrition
Diet plays a significant role in overall reproductive health. Simmons stresses the need for a diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, healthy fats and whole grains to provide the essential nutrients that support fertility. Phytonutrients—natural compounds in plants that provide health benefits—optimize male and female fertility and help the body eliminate toxins. Simmons also recommends limiting processed foods and refined sugar, which can negatively impact hormone balance.
“Nutrients found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy and kohlrabi can help regulate and metabolize hormones,” says Latib. “Nutrients found in grapes and berries can improve the quality of the eggs and sperm by reducing oxidative stress; protect reproductive cells from damage; support successful embryo implantation;
regulate ovulation by modulating hormone levels; and promote hormonal balance. Compounds like lycopene in tomatoes and watermelon have been shown to improve sperm motility and boost immune function by providing antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.”
Latib adds that pairing foods from different color categories in meals helps maximize the positive effects of phytonutrients. Examples include a berry smoothie with spinach, a stir-fry dish with a rainbow of vegetables, a tomato and mushroom frittata, a cauliflower rice bowl with turmeric and veggies, and a kale salad topped with sweet potato.
A Clean Lifestyle
Toxins are all around us, and hormonedisrupting chemicals found in cosmetics, plastic packaging, toys, carpets and pesticides can have serious consequences for male and female fertility. Latib suggests using glass instead of plastic whenever possible and eating organic fruits and vegetables to reduce the pesticide and herbicide exposure.
“Be cautious of endocrine disruptors such as bisphenol A, commonly known as BPA, and phthalates that are used to make plastics. They are found in food packaging, water bottles and food-can linings,” says Simmons, adding, “Even ingredients like ‘fragrance’ can contribute to hormonal imbalances and gut-health issues.”
Stress can negatively affect fertility, underscoring the need for stress management. Simmons recommends quitting tobacco use, reducing alcohol intake and practicing yoga or meditation to improve overall reproductive health. Exercise can also reduce tension, improving health and fertility.
Latib recommends high-intensity exercise during the first half of a woman’s menstrual cycle and restorative movement and exercise in the second half of the cycle. For men, she notes the importance of supporting testosterone levels with regular exercise and sufficient sleep, limiting unhealthy environmental exposures and consuming adequate levels of nutrients like zinc and vitamin D.
Reducing Inflammation
Chronic inflammation can negatively
impact fertility by disrupting hormone balance and damaging reproductive tissues. Oxidative stress occurs when the body’s free radicals and antioxidants are not balanced, leading to damaged reproductive cells and fertility issues.
Both Latib and Simmons recommend working with a fertility specialist to assess a couple’s health, fertility and lifestyle factors. The assessment should include hormone testing to measure levels of testosterone, luteinizing hormones, follicle-stimulating hormones and prolactin; nutrient testing for zinc, selenium and antioxidant levels; a gut-health assessment; and a thorough evaluation of environmental toxin exposures.
“Your body is smart,” emphasizes Latib. “Nothing is unexplainable. If you are having trouble conceiving, there is a root cause. A functional fertility practitioner can guide you through the process.”
