President’s Publication

HEY Y’ALL!!

Hello friends!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! 2017 is here, so that means DCON is right around the corner! I am so excited for DCON, and I hope to see a lot of new faces there. Along with the new semester comes a clean slate for everyone’s hours. I know we just got back so it is hard to get back in to the swing of things, but our first Key Club meeting for the semester will be held on January 11th. We have so many exciting things this semester so do not miss out on all the fun. We will also be accepting new members this semester, so do not forget to sign up. New Year new you, so join our service adventure this semester!

Hope everyone had a wonderful break from school! Now that we’re back at school, we’re jumping right back into meetings, events, and service. We will be accepting new members this semester, so if anyone is interested in Key Club, be sure to spread the word to attend our first meeting of the semester. I’m excited for another semester of service with y’all! Yours in Service

Yours in Service,

Kelly Duong

The Fun in Helping Others By Aryssa Yoon10, Underclassmen Rep Just this year, our school club has partnered with Students Helping Students, a club that was created for students to volunteer to tutor other students. Nearly every other week the opportunity to help and tutor our fellow students is available. This club is especially geared towards who have English as their second language, and Key Club has helped the club reach out to students who are fluent in the native languages of many of the students who request assistance. This event is split into two branches, one intended to tutor students in math, and the other to help students with English. The event is split so that each branch can work effectively and provide the most help they can and tutors and students can collaborate together if they ever get stuck. SHS Tutoring is a very rare opportunity for kids to do some real good and spend time working to help each other.

And although the fact that tutoring the other students also helps the tutors of SHS Tutoring is pleasant, I would have to say that taking the time to know the students and help them learn is truly the best and main part of the entire event by far. When you take the time to realize the amount that the kids appreciate our help makes the whole event completely worthwhile and truly expresses the spirit of unity that is displayed in our school. SHS Tutoring is an event that I believe is often undervalued and overlooked but is one of the most rewarding and helpful events that Key Club offers. Tutoring and getting to know or connect with the other students makes the whole experience enjoyable and the feeling of helping others learn makes the entire event memorable and heartwarming.

Not only is tutoring the other students beneficial for them, but it also helps the tutor. When I help to tutor English, it also helps me develop a greater understanding for the concepts that I review and my overall knowledge of the subject; especially since I am tutoring English, because although it may be my first language, it is also one of my most challenging and thought provoking subjects. Nevertheless, SHS English Tutoring has even helped me in my English class, by developing my grammatical skills, my vocabulary, and renewing my interest in reading. 3
