President’s Publication
HEY Y’ALL!!
Hello friends!
Hey y’all, I hope all is well! As we approach the end of the year, this will be my last month as president. As sad as I am, I am also ecstatic to see what lies ahead for our Key club. I would like to congratulate the new 20172018 board, and wish them the best of luck. I would also like to congratulate our new LTG, Moselle Rodriguez! I am so excited for DCON, and I hope more people will choose to attend DCON next year. I hope y’all have a wonderful rest of the year and complete all of the required hours. Service never stops so neither do we.
As this is my last newsletter as our school club’s editor, I would like to thank you all for being an amazing group of volunteers. It’s been such a great year and I can’t thank this club enough for the opportunities is has granted my fellow members and me. Congratulations to the new board! I know y’all will be great leaders and contribute to a successful club. Yours in Service
Yours in Service,
Kelly Duong

Jurassic Bark By Sai Cheruvu10, Vice President “Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats).” ASPCA. It’s quite sad to think that the pets we love and cherish are like those that are abandoned, unwanted and left to die. These animals can’t event talk to protect their lives. Houston is the city with a high shelter killing rate, but people at PetSmart are making a difference. Every Saturday, PetSmart hosts an animal adoption which allows pet fosters to bring in their dogs and cats to put up for adoption. Many of these dogs and cats come from tough places such as high kill shelters and abused homes. These animals deserve a loving home, and that is our mission when we volunteer at PetSmart. We walk the animals, set up the cages for them, play with them, and make sure that the animals are having a great time. The bonds we build with the dogs and cats in the couple of hours is unbreakable. It’s a bitter sweet experience when they get adopted because that means that we don’t get to see them on our weekly trips to PetSmart, but it also means that they found a loving home. The hope and excitement in the eyes of the dogs when we take them out to play with them is truly beautiful. You lose yourself in those eyes, forget their struggle, the lives that they lead and just see their desire for you to be happy. These animals may not seem as much, but their hearts are gold. The first time I went to go volunteer I was a bit afraid of the animals because I never was comfortable with pets, but these dogs in cages captured my heart. Many of them were kept in cages so they would remain under control, but I soon understood that they were friendlier and happier outside of the bars. One dog in general, Nelson, made my day. I was walking by him and he just seemed so shaken up and scared. At that moment, all I knew was that I had to make his day better. I took him out and started to walk him around. We would be intimidated by the other dogs, so I started to carry him around.
The best part was that he would let me hold him like a baby and everyone who saw him were instantly in love with him. He was also adopted that same day because one of the ladies that saw me thought that Nelson would be a good house dog to keep her company. After all, he found a loving home. Dogs like him made me come back every weekend to help with the adoption. Sometimes it’s stinky and requires a lot of patience, but it’s all worth it when you see a dog walking away to the happy life ahead. The world can be a tough place and the few moments you share with your pets can make a life worth living. It’s terrible to think that so many of our furry friends are being killed every day. It’s even more disturbing to think that there’s nothing we can do about it, but volunteering at PetSmart gives the opportunity to be the voice of the unheard and give them a second chance at life. Simply put, it’s wonderful to be a part of that experience.
