HEY Y’ALL!!
Hello friends!
Hey ya’ll! The DCON theme was announced, and I am so in love with the theme: The Wizarding World of Service!! Words really can’t explain how excited I am for DCON! Our club is trying to find various ways to fundraise for DCON and the Red Cross because we want a lot of our members to attend. Other than DCON, I am totally FALLing in love with all of the wonderful upcoming volunteer events that we have planned. I hope all of our members will be able to attend, and push themselves to serve their community. I know balancing school and volunteering can be hard, but it is definitely not impossible. Service never stops, so neither should your dedication towards Key Club!!
It’s amazing that we are already over halfway through the semester! Our wonderful Secretary, Eghosa Amadin, has posted a file with the number of hours each member has for the semester on our FB page. With less than two month left of the semester, make sure you are attending events! If there are any discrepancies with how many hours you have, please let us know!
Yours in Service,
Kelly Duong

Grace Changes Everything By Nadia Rodriguez10, Historian
This past month, I’ve been going to this place called Grace Care Center, every Friday. It’s basically a rehabilitation center for the elderly and adults with disabilities, injuries, or homeless, and let me tell you, it really is worth going to. Each week I go, I always find myself meeting new people and being inspired by their stories. Like, each and every one of them is so different, and they all have their own story to tell. One person that really stood out to me was 65 year old, Miriam. She’s from Egypt and she’s been at Grace Care for 7 months. This is her story: In 2002, her and her husband had gone to the Bahamas to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. However, this trip was anything but enjoyable. What was supposed to be a 7-day long vacation shortly turned into a 3-day trip, with an urgent rush to the hospital. While jet skiing on afternoon, Miriam’s ski had flipped on her, injuring both of her legs in the jet blades. She was rushed to the hospital, where they told her that, if she was lucky enough to live, she would be permanently paralyzed for the rest of her life, and that she would never be able to get up from her wheelchair. Well, here she was, 12 years later, alive and walking with the assistance of a walker, telling me her story. Listening to Miriam’s story was really inspiring to me. I mean, how many people do YOU know that can say they survived a near death jet-ski experience? I had asked her “How did you do it? How did you keep fighting, even after everyone was telling you to give up?” and I remember she said, with a smile on her face,
“I don’t care what others said about me, because I know that God had a better plan, and I knew he would help me through this because grace changes everything.” Grace changes everything. Wow. Those words really stuck with me. The fact that an ordinary woman had such an extraordinary belief in her faith, and didn’t feel put down regardless of what others said is, to me, what a true hero is. Ever since that Friday, October the 7th, I have been going to Grace Care every week after school to visit Miriam. Although it is only an hour event, I always find myself staying after 30 or 40 minutes extra to share with others and help make their day. It truly is a great feeling to make someone’s day by just sitting down and sharing a laugh!
