Welcome to the April issue of E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executives. This month we are featuring Global Game Changers, women making their own rules to win.

Before we get started I wanted to share a wonderful quote-something we can all relate to.

“BE KIND because everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.”

Sometimes we assume the other guy is having an easier go of it.

When in fact people just carry their burdens differently. We can rest assured, as humans, we will encounter a struggle. Let’s make our interface with our fellow man as pleasant as possible. Let’s be the one that helps to bring them back as opposed to the one that pushes them closer to the edge.

Many business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals while growing their businesses, have encountered great battles behind the scene. Their journeys were wrought with challenge and many times they sacrificed much more than they first anticipated.

As a business owner, pioneer or innovator- if you stay committed to the outcome and flexible (innovative) on the process, you will arrive at your destination less bruised, wiser, possibly faster and more aware of even greater opportunities.

Morocco Where Dreams Begin...

Amal is a talented self -taught designer who is originally from Morocco, she was born and raised in Casablanca city. She became interested in dressmaking and started designing at the tender age of 13. Through the loving guidance and mentorship of her mother, she began creating her own clothes to wear gaining much admiration from her peers requesting clothing for themselves thus starting her own retail business.

Q-What are you planning next?

A.-As soon as I finished the EMAAR BH -USA Project, i did my research about UAE, and i find out that there is a lot of hospitality brand then i went to visit home Morocco and i took the opportunity to visit UAE since its so close and it take only 7 hours traveling, and i had few meetings already planned with purchase department for their uniforms needs, during this visit i had the chance to communicate with leaders in hospitality, to find out about the middle eastern projects like Expo Dubai 2020, and the world cup 2022, then i start to plan to have an office in UAE, and to manufacture in Morocco in keeping the main office in BH-CAUSA, i would like to design uniforms for a luxury brand hotels and resorts for their entire hotels and an airline Crew as well.

As someone who spends a great deal of time online, living, eating, and breathing in technology, I am surprised at how many ad-hoc answers people throw out on forums and in comments about how Facebook is the answer to all your marketing problems.

Let me ask you a question, and depending on when you started your business your answer may vary, but what did you do be-

fore Facebook to market your business?

You see for those of us who have been around for a while - I began my business in 1985 at the age of 19 directly after graduating from college with a degree in IT. What I do, is what I have always done since the age of 14 - been involved in technology and marketing.

So having come from the decades of yellow pages, direct mail, bill boards, bench ads, magazine ads, trade shows, to AOL, Compuserve, forums, bulletin boards, yahoo, ezines, ad swaps, Google, to the onslaught of the social media platforms - your savior or stability of your business was and still is to follow the marketing success strategy;

Find your target audience Solve a problem they have Deliver the solution in the way they want to receive it So if you isolate Facebook as a marketing savior - let’s take a look at where following that advice may do more harm than good.

And let me be clear here, Facebook is an amazing social media platform, it is the most user friendly, able to connect with like minded individuals, join communities, and precisely target to a market through ads and boosted posts, but may fail at point #1 of the marketing success strategy formula.

The first question that must be answered is, Is your target audience on Facebook? For many professionals, the answer is no. It’s a great B2C environment - which is why major brands who sell to consumers are here in a big way. But if you are B2B - and you are a professional seeking another professional, in a specific tax bracket or employee qualification, then you may be barking up the wrong tree and your audience may be on Linkedin.

This is why social media strategists exists.

We aren’t technicians queuing your hootsuite, generating MEMEs on demand, or

posting random comments and replies, we take a 360 degree view of your business, it’s goals, and your desired outcomes, before having you leap on a social media bandwagon.

However, and this is the plague of the internet as well, many people have opinions out there that simply aren’t in your best interest because they don’t know your big picture.

So now we have gotten the warning out of the way. let’s assume you have qualified point #1 and your audience is here - now what.

On to point #2 - You need to solve a problem they have, and use Facebook or whatever social media and other marketing medium applies, to communicate that solution.

This means a multi-faceted approach to leveraging Facebook. Many start with a personal page, and that is fine for letting people get to know your personal side, and promote your business. The drawbacks here are when you hit the 5000 limit, and if you’re in business you will, you must go to the next step. So you might as well think from the very beginning what sort of structure you need. You can use your personal as your launch pad and

central login, but you’ll want to look at adding some more pages.

Let me use my setup to help you understand the differences.

First you have your personal page - http:// www.Facebook.com/TracyRepchuk (but at some point you hit the 5000 limit like I have) Then you may want to add your actual company name. This will help when you are growing beyond you, or if the company is the front game, then you definitely need to put your attention here - https://www.facebook.com/

InnerSurf/ (this would be when you set up as a company, organization or institution)

In my case I don’t put a lot of attention into the company as I am the front of the business, but we still need it. Next could be an extended page from you the Artist Band or Public Profile - (or local business or place, brand or product, entertainment or cause or community) In this case my public figure page is this - and that is where my attention goes.

The next type of page you can set up is a group based niche market or product page. This allows you to build a community of people interested in a topic, and keep discussions specific to that. This is great because people may not know who you are, but when they are searching for a topic, they will find yours and ultimately connect that way. An example of a group topic or product based group is this

https://www.facebook.com/ groups/internetsuccessmastery/ The last major use of Facebook (other than ads and boosted posts), is to promote an upcoming event. Again this has the advantage of telling people connected to you that there is an event coming up.

The event can be a live event, webinar, anything that has a specific date and instructions on how to participate.

This link lets you see upcoming events, and add your own event to the mix.

https://www.facebook.com/ events/upcoming So once you have determined who your target market is and where do they hang out, the best marketing methods and social media platform, and then solved a problem they have, now it’s time to deliver the solution in the way they want to receive it.

What that means is do they want a live event, coaching, one on one session, group session, do it yourself digital program, membership community, webinars with Q&A, books, DVDs, CDs, you on their location, you do it for them and any other way that emerges.

So Facebook is one of the tools in your toolbox, and as long as it’s the tool for you and your target market, then you want to take advantage of the many layers it has.

The thing I’ve learned after 30 years in business though is to diversify your marketing efforts, track your statistics and results for each of the methods you are using, and strengthen the ones that are converting, and drop off and add more options for the weaker ones. Getting fixated on one, or dependent on it, could expose the success of your future.

By constantly tracking, searching, and taking actions based on promotional results, will give you the strategies you need to keep your business viable, growing, and strong.

The campaign includes a series of short videos, called the “unfairy tales”, and evocative graphics as to the inherent unfairness confronting refugees. Some graphics highlight the abysmal numbers of children involved, while others put the spotlight on individuals who have treat refugees a manner constituting an act of humanity.

The "...initiative, #actofhumanity, emphasising that children are children, no matter where they come from, and that every child has rights and deserves a fair chance[i]." Appealing to the masses, the campaign sends a powerful message to both individuals and leaders around the world.

UNICEF’s Act of Humanity media campaign, when read in conjunction with formal press releases, implies that the agreement between the European Union and Turkey may constitute a crime against humanity in violation of the Geneva Conventions, the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, and the International Declaration of Human Rights.

“UNHCR is not a party to the EU-Turkey deal, nor will we be involved in returns or Page 39 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

detention,” stated a UNHCR press release[ii].

Under the agreement, for every Syrian refugee Greece accepts into the European Union, one refugee would be returned to Turkey[iii]. Under international law, Turkey has not been designated a “safe third country” or a "safe first country of asylum" based on its failure to adhere to Rule of Law, including the commission of wellknown human rights violations involving repression of the press, and the persecution of Kurds in Turkey and the bombing of Kurds in Syria.

The agreement requires legislation to be enacted by both Greece and Turkey. There is concern that Turkey will not timely enact appropriate legislation or that Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

any legislation passed would exclude nonSyrian refugees. The bill introduced in Greece failed to name Turkey as a “safe third country”. Cognizant of negative criminal ramifications, Greece previously sought concurrence from its European Union partners at an EU-Turkey summit several weeks ago by requesting the EU collectively declare Turkey a "safe third country". Several EU member states refused.

"I am deeply concerned about any arrangement that would involve the blanket return of anyone from one country to another without spelling out the refugee protection safeguards under international law," U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi told the European Parliament[iv].

There is also concern that about a lack of safeguards preventing Turkey from engaging in refoulement, or forced return[v]. According to a report released today by Amnesty International, Turkey has been Page 40 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

illegally forcing 100 Syrian refugees every day to return to Syria, with the total numbering in the thousands sparking concern as to Turkey’s intentions under the agreement with Greece and the EU[vi].

In addition, the UNHCR stated that Greece lacks sufficient capacity on the islands for assessing asylum claims, and a lack of decent and safe accommodations for asylum seekers pending examination of their cases[vii]. “People determined to be needing international protection should be able to enjoy asylum, without discrimination, in accordance with accepted international standards, including effective access to work, health care, education for children, and, as necessary, social assistance[viii].”

withdrawn its logo and aid workers from Greece[ix].Going forward, UNHCR will focus on protection monitoring to ensure that refugee and human rights standards are upheld, and provide information on the rights and procedures to seek asylum. NGOs are following suit.

United Nations agencies, including the UNHCR, and humanitarian aid organizations have criticized the deal as violating EU law and international law. Condemnation issued from Doctors Without Borders, who characterized the agreement as “cynical and inhumane”, and from Amnesty International[x].

Perhaps foretelling the future, six months ago, on October 31, 2015, with countries closing off borders to the 60 million people having been displaced as a result of armed conflict, a joint statement issued by Union Nations Secretary-General Ban Kimoon and International Committee of the Red Cross President Peter Mauer called on states to: ■ rein in armed groups and hold them accountable for abuses, and stop the use of heavy weapons in populated areas; ■ protect and assist displaced people fleeing insecurity, and help to find longterm solutions; ■ ensure unhindered access to medical and humanitarian missions; ■ condemn those who violate international humanitarian law; and ■ redouble efforts to find sustainable solutions to conflicts[xi] (Emphasis Added).

Condemnation is commonly defined as censure, to pronounce guilty, punishment and sentencing. Their statement contained a less than veiled hint that crimes against humanity were already being committed in violation of international human rights law.

I lived the craziest, most spectacular life in the fast lane for almost 20 years in my corporate career. I understood it as a requirement for making my mark in the world. All successful managers in my circle of influence lived like that.

60+ hours a week, breakfast lunch and dinner at the work desk, and a whole lot of determination. I averaged 2 hours of sleep a night, but never felt tired the next day. In fact, I used to run and hike a lot, had enormous amount of energy, and NEVER dozed off in meetings. And I don’t even drink coffee. No breaks. No slowing down. It was superhuman efforts at its finest. I continued to move up that corporate ladder with my adrenalin, and I liked it.

I thought I would live like that forever. Then my body told me, no can do.

That was when I realized for the first time how imbalanced and burnt out I was as a human being.

After the tough and aggressive cancer treatments, I vowed not to repeat the same unhealthy pattern that got me sick. I studied holistic health and got certifications, with the goal of coaching busy people take better care of themselves. I decided early on that the focus of my coaching would be on lifework balance and burnout prevention. I admit that changing career and starting my own business immediately after cancer was not easy. I had very little stamina and even less money, but I was absolutely confident that I would change lives.

Life-work balance and burnout prevention is my daily priority.

It has to be! There is so much on my plate. If I don’t take care of myself first, the quantity and the quality of my achievements will suffer.

So I choose to nurture my wellbeing even when a temptation hits to go back to my old habits of just getting it done now at all costs. This truly requires a bigger game mentality.

How does your game look like right now?

Climbing that corporate ladder, fame and fortune for which you’ve been sacrificing so much. You may have thought that this game in progress is your bigger game. It’s not a caliber of any Tom, Dick or Harry. It’s significantly better than that, so yes, it is a bigger game than most. However, sacrificing all to play your “bigger game” now in hopes of buying your life back later will not get you far. You are placing limitations on a game that could be even bigger. When will this “later” be, anyway? Is there a guarantee that there will be a “later” at all?

No. So play bigger. Now. Keep your eyes on the prize, the happiness that life-work balance will bring.

where people struggle so much to figure out components as basic as knowing who they are and what they want. Therefore, when you reset your attitude to manage your balance for greater happiness, you’re already playing the bigger game.

You will be considerably ahead of the curve. If you are suffering with the painful side effects of your superhuman status, know that the proper cure is at the level of the mind. Find your bigger game mentality in the things that truly matter to you. Do the following:

1. Positive Intentions What are your thoughts about the status of your physical, emotional, social health and life-work balance now? What is the decision you would like to make concerning your happiness and fulfillment? What is keeping you from the improvement that you deserve? Are you discouraged by the results of your previous attempts? How do you feel about yourself in your goal setting and implementation? How do you feel about trying again?

Set clear intentions for better life and balance. Positive intentions only! Mind is a powerful thing. Every morning when you wake up, set your intention to have your best day yet. Every night when you go to bed, reflect on the absolutely fabulous things that happened to you that day.

Intend to see the positive. Then you will only see the positive.

Positive intentions are always beneficial, no matter how they are created.

However, their power is more influential when set in positive origins rather than desperation. This is why I always suggest that intentions be set in the morning, before you have a chance to be distracted. As you get ready for the day, visualize what you want to see happen throughout the day. Imagine the possibilities for your empowerment on this day. How will you care for yourself to achieve a better life-work balance? How will this balance help you do more in less time? How will you choose to be happy? What nourishment will you feed your mind and body? How will you generate positive energy for yourself and those around you? Tell yourself that you will welcome the uncertainty of how your intentions will materialize. Let go of the specifics to which you have been attached.

Know that the universe will surprise you to help with your positive intentions to be happy.

2. Stop Living in Guilt Even with the best intentions, you will make less than desirable choices in the pursuit of your many goals. Emotions follow. Negative ones. Anguish, shame, disgust, disappointment, frustration, despair… the all-encompassing guilt. The inevitable regret after (or even during!) your poor choices (What?

The entire box of chocolates in one sitting?) is just pure guilt. Guilt. Yes, that negative emotion that comes when you know better than to do what you just did, when you know you didn’t live up to your own expectation. You have let others down. More importantly, you have let yourself down.

Then you feel like a failure, and more emotions follow – self-loathing, misery, depression, hopelessness….

Guilt is not something that goes away easily, and the damage is long lasting. Sigmund Freud described guilt as the unconscious punishing force within self that would lead to illness and most powerful of all obstacles to recovery.

Much of the guilt that many live with started early in their lives. Young children long for their parents’ approval and often think that they disappointed them when being disciplined. They believe they are being disliked because they didn’t live up to the expectations. Some children are immediately given the expression of love and support at the time of the disciplining, and some are not. Children’s self-image is delicate and easily influenced by how others treat them.

They often think that bad things

(divorce, unemployment of a parent, death in the family, etc.) happen because they didn’t behave better. The guilt that inhibits a young mind does not go away automatically. Time does not necessarily heal those guilty feelings. It must be a deliberate effort to release the guilt and move on.

Your physical body knows when there is a negative emotion present. This negative energy causes the physical body to suffer.

This is called psychoneuroimmunology.

Mind-body connection is a powerful thing.

Guilt is an immense emotion that threatens your balance and health on every level. It is destructive and punishing to the soul. Its damage is far greater than any other unhealthy choice you can possibly make.

So make the healthy choices first. Do the right thing. Avoid any guilt-inducing activity in the first place. But if you choose to eat that cheesecake, don’t make it worse by crying in guilt afterwards. Know that you’ll be paying the price for your choices (how will you burn off all those calories?) but minimize the damage. Don’t allow the agonizing guilt to creep in to your bigger game mentality. Just enjoy your cheesecake, and move on.

3. Forgive In order to free yourself from guilt, you must forgive yourself. It is the only way to find peace, healing, and happiness. Forgiveness may not come easily, depending on the scale of suffering that took place.

Many find it easier to forgive others than to forgive themselves. Why is that? Do you honestly think that you are unforgivable?

The answer to that question will expand into other questions about how your life is going. But for the quick read of this article, let’s start with the discussion of forgiving others, and then put “you” in the same ideas.

When someone has wronged you, negative emotions develop. As the injured person, it is easy to focus on the past that should have been different for you. You want to vent and let out some steam and keep doing it for a while. You obsess over anger and hold a grudge. You may even want to see the offender suffer just as much as you did. Payback time. It will serve them right. What goes around comes around, right?

Well, instead of the suffering your offender deserves, let’s talk about you and what these negative emotions do to you. The desire to remain angry and unforgiving hurts YOU every time. The lingering pain

Forgive. Let go of the negative emotions, accept the offender as is, and claim your power and healing. Accepting the offender does not mean that you approve of their behavior. It does not mean you must be friends from now on. It simply means you’re detaching yourself from the angry demand for them to change the past.

Do not wait for the offender to become worthy of your forgiveness. Separate the person from the behavior, and free yourself from the pain that takes away from your emotional and physical health.

Forgiveness brings miraculous healing. It brings hope. It liberates you from the emotional toxins that bring you down. This is especially true if the person that you haven’t forgiven is you. You must take this step to forgive yourself and others in order to develop the bigger game mentality that you need for your healthy balance. Let go, and forgive.

4. Practice the Love that You Want What kind of love do you want? How do you want to be loved? Have you ever been loved that way?

The desire to deserve love is the most basic and innate human characteristic.

True and sincere love lasts through the toughest times, dysfunctions, misunderstandings, frictions, challenges, as well as the happiest times, jovial moments, and positive chemistry. This is unconditional love. It believes in you when you’re not sure, comforts you when you’re afraid, forgives you when you don’t know if you could ever be forgiven, lets you live and learn on your terms, and sees the beautiful and amazing person that you are at all times. This is the type of love that we all want, isn’t it? But many believe that this love is difficult, if not impossible, to find.

I beg to differ. This unconditional love is a gift available to everyone.

Do you truly feel worthy of this unconditional love? If yes, why? If no, why not? My guess is that you have looked for this unconditional love before. You have tried your best to be loved unconditionally by someone. However, what you found instead was disappointment.

That is why you may think this unconditional love does not exist for you. You may have thought for a while that you do not deserve this love at all.

Well, let’s take a look at you. You, your mind and body, your talents, your potential, and what you have to offer to the world are a unique package that never existed before and will never repeat again in the history of mankind. You are uniquely worthy of the unconditional love that you want. But if you don’t feel that, think about your possible reasons. Maybe you’re trying to be something that you are not. Or someone has treated you badly, told you that you were not good enough, therefore you were not lovable. My guess is that they did that to you because someone else did it to them first. The unkind, or downright evil, words and actions are possible only when one does not understand one’s magnificent worth. Therefore, people treat others the same horrible way that they feel about themselves. If someone has wronged you, that’s because that person has strong issues with himself/herself first.

The sad part of that interaction is that the negative energy continues to flow when we hurt and be hurt.

Let’s stop this flow of negativity.

How is it done? Answer this question: Do you love yourself unconditionally? I certainly hope so.

We already established the fact that you are uniquely worthy of this love! This is why unconditional love is available to everyone… because it starts with you. Love yourself unconditionally, and you will find the capacity to love others and be loved by others unconditionally. So how will you do that? The 13th century Persian poet Rumi said it best.

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”

5. Smile Like You Mean It There is no substitute for a smile. It implies happiness. It brightens the tone of a conversation. It encourages someone in need of an approval. It lifts worries and burdens.

It communicates optimism. It reflects everything that you want your bigger game mentality to be.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have a great smile. Do you? We all look the most attractive when we smile. Here’s to your bigger game mentality, smile!

Smiling is a perfect example of how positive mind-body connection keeps you healthy. It triggers activity in your left frontal cortex, which is the area that indicates happy and positive emotions. It releases the feel-good neurotransmitter dopamine. Smiling helps reduce anxiety and regulate blood pressure.

More importantly, smiling is contagious and can easily lead to laughter.

If you’re feeling stressed out, take a deep breath and then smile. Find happiness in the present moment. What are the elements of your happiness? Can you feel happy and remain there without your mind wandering somewhere else? The flow of life does not rush. It does not resist. It accepts the timing and the pace as nature intends. Find happiness in that. Be of good cheer, and smile like you mean it. Do this throughout the day.

Success is something you already are.

Self-esteem is how we feel about who we are. It is a measure of how much we like ourselves. In order to attract success we must generate high levels of self-esteem every day.

It is often confused with self-confidence and that can create stress and confusion. Overachievers have an abundance selfconfidence; yet they may have low (or no) self-esteem. I call these people Zoom-Eekers or “Crash and Burners.”

The secret to feeling the success that you are is self-esteem.

These people always achieve what they set out to do, usually, at their own expense. They are typically pressureoriented, adrenaline junkies who thrive when the heat is on and crash afterward.

Self-esteem comes from being not from doing.

I learned this lesson in a traumatic way.

When I was 21 I learned what self-esteem was and realized I didn’t have enough of it. At an early age my self-esteem stopped growing and became what I call a “human doing.”

I felt that I had to earn my value by being a “good girl” and pleasing the people around me. Somehow during my childhood I got the message that I wasn’t good enough and had to earn my success. I became very accomplished at an early age and felt if I wasn’t achieving the next big goal I was a loser.

I had my entire life mapped out.

I was on the fast track to success until the age of 18 when

my fraternity brothers’ friend raped me and threatened to ruin my reputation if I ever told anyone what happened.

In that moment the entire direction of my life changed. In that moment, I felt robbed of all the value and gifts I had to share with the world. I felt damaged and empty with nothing to offer.

To cope with the situation I became a workaholic. I worked full-time while going to school full time; a recipe for disaster.

I kept that pace up until one day I literally couldn’t get out of bed. Instead of graduating college I was graduating intense therapy. I recovered and re-

connected with the world and my passion of dancing. I had started a successful business and was on the fast track again. I was planning to go back to school for choreography, only to be injured in a car accident.

I lost my business, unable to work for a year, and needed physical therapy for 3.5 years. The first 4 months I was in bed for most of the time unable to move. I was living back with my parents, no job and unable to serve anyone. It was during that time that I learned that success is my birthright and desires of the heart are always granted.

Have you ever heard the phrase, “What you focus on expands?”

Well, it’s true. You can look at a problem and look at it and look at it – and the problem eventually grows into something that seems impossible to overcome. However, if you look toward a solution, the problem eventually becomes irrelevant and goes away… it is miraculously solved. That is evidence, in your own experience, of the power and importance of focus.

Nowadays, cyberstalking is more common than physical harassment and the most dangerous of the three types of Internet harassment (cyberstalking, cyberharassment and cyberbullying).

People who are managing online platforms for professional reasons, especially the ones whose presence is successful, are also another target at particular risk of being cyberstalked. It would be a tragedy if you completely ceased all your serial networking activities in order to avoid being cyberstalked. Instead, you have to learn how to defend yourself against this threat. The rules for prevention are simple, but they must become part of your life, of your company, and of your training procedure.

Vademecum to Avoid Cyberstalkers 1) Mask your IP address Don’t let your IP address out in the open, there is no need at all to tell anybody where your location is. Search for ‘proxy servers,’ ‘VPN services,’ or ‘hide my IP address.’

2) Don’t forget your privacy settings Particularly for your social media, you should review your privacy settings and limit the exposure of your personal information. You can do this in: Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, MySpace and Flickr. Also, don’t forget your email accounts and browsers as well.

3) Don’t use the free Wi-Fi My advice is that if you need a connection to the Internet, you should pay for one and forget the free Wi-Fi. Open wireless networks are

vulnerable to hackers and they provide an easy access point to get you private information. If you must use a free wireless and you are on your laptop where there are all your personal information stored, there are some safety rules to follow. Create a user account in your computer without administrator privileges and use only this account to surf with a free wireless. If at all possible, don’t login into any website, especially those for your: online banking, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. because on a free wireless it is very easy to steal your login details.

4) Logout Maybe you don’t know that, but not logging out your web apps - such as Facebook, Amazon, online banking, and any other app - is the same as if you left your house door unlocked. Hackers can go through your browser cookies and break into your accounts if you stay logged in.

Then they could act indisturbed, pretending to be you. I know what you may think about that, if you are the only user of a computer there is no real need to logout. I understand also how annoying it can be to login every time on each website. But if you think about the consequences, maybe you will find the task less wearisome.

5) Email addresses, the more the merrier

I myself use a different email account for almost every task: one for my online shopping, one for each of my social media, and so forth. Why not! They are free and having more emails helps to be safe online. Some people believe only paid email providers are good, but I don’t agree with that view. Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail and so on, are as good as any paid email and very helpful to use for safety purposes. 6) GPS and I don’t get lost We can’t live without it anymore, but we should learn to minimize the information we disclose about our location, when there are no compelling reasons to do otherwise.

Some people don’t know this yet, but many apps in your smartphones keep track of your localization, if you don’t adjust your privacy settings to stop them. For example, when you take photos with your smartphone and send them, if you don’t activate your privacy settings in your camera app, then you could communicate your location as well. Take just few minutes and turn off your GPS. For your safety, consider it!

7) To install or not to install There are apps I would have loved to install, but I eventually decided it was safer to live without them. Don’t download apps that ask for many of your personal details at once: age, gender, zip code, or to access your resources. All these details can help malicious users to identify who you are.

8) My phone, my life Yes, my phone is part of me and it stays with me all the time. Never, ever leave your phone alone when there are other people around, including your partner, especially if he/she is a possessive person. Nowadays, it is very easy to put spyware inside a mobile phone.

9) Usernames When a website asks you to create a username, don’t ever put your last name, nor your first name. Use a nickname not related Page 74 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Sometimes, it is enough to have the first name, last name, birth date and the name of an attended school to find out all the other details about someone. Those are already enough to get you in trouble.

10) Linking social media together If you have more than one social media you will be tempted to link all of them. Please, don’t do it light-heartedly!

When you connect them together, you will give away more information about you and it is not safe at all. Just use one social media at a time.

11) Passwords Don’t share with anybody your passwords and change them often. Many people tell me that it is hard for them to remember a difficult password. I know, that is difficult for anybody, including me. Indeed, I hope you don’t think that just because I am a security expert that it would easier for me to remember a difficult password. Not at all. Yet, since they are so difficult, it is harder for the hackers as well to guess them.

12) Friends and family could do you a disservice What do I mean? They take pictures and videos and they post them online without asking, have you realized that? Maybe you might tell them that videos and photos don’t need to stay on the Internet to have value.

How Do I Know Somebody Is Cyberstalking Me? It may sound like a trivial question, but it's not so much in practice, especially if you are seeking the help of the law enforcement.

Michelle Dipp Co-founder and CEO, OvaScience The El Paso, Tex. native already had the resume of a biotech wunderkind: she graduated from the University of Oxford with an MD and PhD, went on to serve as vice president of Cambridge-based Sirtris Pharmaceuticals – where she engineered the sale of the company to GlaxoSmithKline for $720 million – and eventually headed up GSK’s Ju specialized R&D unit, the Centre of Excellence for External Drug Discovery (CEEDD). In 2011, after seeing multiple friends struggle with fertility issues, she co-founded OvaScience to bring to market a breakthrough innovation that uses a woman’s own mitochondria to “revitalize” older eggs before they’re fertilized, improving embryo quality for in-vitro fertilization. So far, ten babies have been born using the technology, and the company is on track to start commercializing the product next year—except in the U.S., where the FDA has yet to approve it.

Cheng Wei and Jean Li There are basically two choices for ride-hailing apps in China – Didi Kuadi and Uber – and the homegrown company remains the big dog, with 80% market share.

Didi Kuaidi co-founder Cheng Wei is a cherubicfaced tech whiz who leaned on Jean Liu – the daughter of Lenovo founder Liu Chuanzhi and a former Goldman Sachs managing director – to finalize a merger earlier this year. The deal combined the Tencent-backed Didi Dache with Alibaba-backed Kuaidi Dache to create a giant capable of fending off rivals like Uber. In early September, the new company – which also has a new trans-pacific partnership with Lyft – was said to be raising $3 billion at a valuation of more than $16 billion, double its valuation in the spring.

Previously, Lomasney studied and worked in the field of nuclear decontamination, participating in decontamination efforts in Chernobyl and Fukushima.

Jessica Billingsley saw a need for a software platform for business operation in the cannabis industry after investing in one of Boulder, Colo.'s first dispensaries. Joining forces with Amy Poinsett, who owned a local web development firm, she decided to fill that niche herself, creating MJ Freeway. "We were the first cannabis-specific software company to enter the market, and we did so believing that when properly regulated and tracked, the opening of cannabis to free trade is good for the economy and the right thing for people who need medical access to cannabis," Billingsley says. The software platform includes tracking and reporting systems that help businesses account for products at every stage of production and sales.

For thirteen years of my life, I was bul by students and a teacher at school.

“Oreo!” “Geek!” “Shorty-by-nature!”

“Goody-two-shoes!” “Sell out!”

“Ugly!” “Big-eyed Freak!” “Geico Direct!” “Squirrel!” “Light bright damned near white!” These are names that students shouted and called me during my time in elementary, middle, and high school. Students made fun of my physical appearance and picked on me by saying I was skinny and short with a big forehead and big eyes.

Several students constantly picked on my clothes and shoes because they were not name-brand. I did not wear name-brand clothes until I was in middle school because my parents could not afford to spend hundreds of dollars on clothes and shoes.

They put their money on more important items, such as paying the mortgage on the house, having food to eat, and a comfortable home to live in. For thirteen years of my life, I was bullied by students and a teacher at school. Not only was I verbally and emotionally bullied, but students physically bullied me, as well.

On August 25, 1992, I stepped off of school bus 144 and began walking to my kindergarten class. Immediately, my gait came to a halt as a bully grabbed my pink, Barbie book bag from my back, unzipped it, and threw all my articles on the floor. My pencils, pens, coloring books, notebooks, and paper came tumbling to the ground. I knew that a student would come to my aid, reach down, and help me up. Unfortunately, no one did. llied me and began pointing, teasing, and laughing at me. I was mortified and embarrassed, but extremely disheartened that not one person came to my rescue. I bent down on the ground, picked up my belongings, placed them back inside my book bag, and walked to my kindergarten teacher’s class, trying so desperately not to cry. That was my first day of kindergarten; that was the first day of being bullied for the next thirteen years of my life.

From that moment on, I was bullied and threatened. In the third grade, a student constantly picked on me, and I told my teacher. The student became furious that I told on him that he threatened me and said Page 93 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

that if I told on him again, he would kill my family and me. In middle school, a bully demanded that I open the locker room door for her, and when I refused to do so, she bent back my arm and tried to break it. During PE classes and recess, students threw the ball and hit me in the head when the teacher was not looking. Kids made fun of me for being short and small. In one instance, a girl dangled me from a two story building and threatened to drop me because she thought it was funny to watch me suffer. Another time, a student deliberately invited me over her house for a sleepover and tried to smother me to death with a pillow. In high school, students relentlessly called me an “Oreo” and said that I “acted Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

white” because I was in Honors and Advanced Placement classes because I made A’s and because I knew how to play the piano and enjoyed listening to classical music.

According to my black peers, I wasn’t “black enough.”

I became so low from the words and actions of students that I contemplated suicide when I was 16 years old. Often times, I found myself alone or by myself on the playground, and when I was around a group of students, I still felt alone because I did not fit in with them. I thought to myself, “What is the point of going on with life when students are so mean to me?” Thankfully, I had a strong support system at home with my parents, and they kept me grounded and encouraged me. No matter how I was treated at school, when I came home, I knew I was loved and appreciated, and having that positive influence around me kept me alive.

told me, I kept persevering and was determined to succeed. I came out triumphant!

I graduated from high school with a 4.4 GPA in 2005, graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and a minor in Psychology in 2009, graduated from the University of Southern California with a Master of Education in Postsecondary Administration and Student Affairs in 2014. I have worked at three universities: the University of North Carolina’s General Administration System, North Carolina State University, and the University of Southern California. I have played the piano internationally in Europe and Africa. Even though those who bullied me tried to bring me down and told me I would not amount to anything, I showed and proved them wrong. I have accomplished many feats, and I am only 28 years old.

I became saddened with hearing stories of students being bullied at school that I decided to be vulnerable and share my story in hopes of helping those who have been bullied or are currently being bullied. In January 2016, I released my memoir Page 95 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

entitled BULLIED From Terror to Triumph, My Survival Story. In this book, I recount the physical and verbal abuse I experienced for thirteen years from students at school. From the shame and humiliation of having my arm almost broken to students throwing food at me in the cafeteria and on the bus, this book takes the reader on a journey into the pain, suffering, and heartache of one being bullied.

Readers will be inspired when they discover how I am victorious in overcoming these challenges, difficulties, and hardships, and in the end, I turn terror into triumph. Celebrities support my cause to end bullying, and I received endorsements from Jayne Kennedy, Carl Anthony Payne, Porscha Coleman, DeVon Franklin, Amy Newmark, and more. In addition to writing my book, I have had psychologist Dr. Gloria Morrow on my Online Talk Show talk about bullying and the psychological aspects of it. Furthermore, I share my bullying experience in the form of a rap to the theme song of the Fresh Prince of BelAir. I am currently working on an anti-bullying song and dance, and I hope to speak at more churches, schools, universities, and conferences to bring light on bullying because it is an epidemic. Bullying not only takes place at school, but it transpires in the workplace, church, online, everywhere. In my book, I not only share my story, but I provide statistics and resources that people can use if they are being bullied or think about contemplating suicide. When students realize they have a support system and know that they have someone who cares, it helps with coping and dealing with bullying situations.

For those who are bullied, I encourage you to speak out, stand up, and reach out. I made a

presentation to the Santa Barbara AntiDefamation League a couple months ago, and I learned this technique.

If someone is hurting you, speak out by yelling, “Stop!” “Leave me alone!” “Don’t do that!” If someone is watching the bullying take place, please do not stand by and do nothing about it, stand up and become an ally to that individual who is being bullied. Lastly, reach out by telling a teacher, principal, administrator, adult, anyone who can help you. To those who are in the education system, please take it seriously when a student comes to you about being bullied. Students sometimes feel that they do not have a support system or that if they confide in a teacher or adult and that person does not do anything, they feel that the only way out is suicide. Please help those who reach out to you. You just might save a life.

I pray for the day that people will stop bullying and will not be malicious and evil with their words and actions. We need to be more tolerant, loving, and kind to those who are different from us. I pledge to do my part to stop bullying by being an ally, speaking out about this topic, and giving hugs, advice, and resources to those who are bullied. Mentoring Creating a PATH for Success

Expressing a desire to be a mentor, or to be mentored, creates an opportunity that has the potential to change your life while growing your knowledge, skill-base and selfconfidence. Being a part of a mentoring pair (a ‘dyad’) establishes from its onset, that there is a learning journey that is going to happen between two people. As I

discuss in The ATHENA Prodigies,

how fluid the journey is, and how well each person reacts to the ambiguity that can appear when mentoring, is dependent on how prepared both travellers are at the on-set of their relationship.

The creation of a roadmap at the beginning of a mentoring journey helps to make visible many of the stepping stones that are needed to support the relationship and validate that the return on investment (ROI) will be achieved. desire for a change in results or personal development needs to be matched with the mentees desire to learn and share back.

By defining the boundaries and expectations around various facets of the mentoring relationship at the beginning, they can

In my March column, I developed on the importance that desire has in a mentoring relationship. Desire can fade quickly if chaos is felt by either the mentor or mentee, limiting the ability for an emotional connection to be established. become the roadmap for your journey, keep you on course or be the guide you refer to when feeling lost or detour and adjustments from the plan are needed.

3 Steps for Creating a Path for Success “In order to set the mentor-mentee relationship up for success, the goal or outcome of the relationship needs to be established at the beginning” (The ATHENA Prodigies).

no consistency or clear vision of what success means to the dyad and how they are to get there. As such, it is important that the dyad be aligned on how they are to achieve success, or their goals (e.g. the ROI) at the beginning to provide focus and alignment on moving forward from the start.

Create a Safe Environment Creating a safe environment for learning is critical for trust to be built and maintained, and to establish open communication between the dyad. Although a desire to learn or help is at the foundation of a mentoring relationship, this desire cannot be expressed and shared if either half of the dyad does not feel safe in the relationship.

Creating a safe environment can remove any fears that are felt by either individual.

I share in The ATHENA Prodigies, that for parents or caregivers, creating an environment where children will be willing to share their ideas, dreams or fears is crucial for children to be comfortable with being vulnerable to not only provide insight into themselves but to receive guidance and mentoring.

oneself without repercussion are examples of different conversations that can be held between mentors and mentees, or caregivers and children, in order to create a safe environment through boundaries and expectations.

Establish Boundaries and Expectations Setting boundaries and expectations goes deeper than the “who does this and who is responsible for that” perspective. The dialogue around establishing what each person is responsible also plays a role in the initial development of trust between the dyad. To define expectations assumes that there has been a collaborative dialogue between the dyad, where ideas and desires are expressed and exchanged.

To create boundaries implies that there is an agreement whereby personal space and growth are not impeded by the other person. A mentee, or child for example, does not have the same learning experience if the mentor, parent or caregiver, is a constant figure and guiding every decision-making process. Space to learn, and even make mistakes, is needed by mentees and establishing how involved a mentor will be in a mentees activities needs to be discussed and respected. “Mentors take the leadership role within the mentormentee relationship … and must learn how to flex their presence based on the needs of the mentee” (The ATHENA Prodigies). Over-stepping boundaries can result in a loss of trust within the relationship, loss of confidence in the mentee or Page 105 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

decreased desire to help by the mentor. Establishing expectations can be viewed as what the intended Return-on-Investments (ROI) are from the mentoring relationship.

These can be tangible metrics or some other measurement so that at any point in time, the dyad can look at their results and confirm if they are on-track to meet their goals.

Establishment of ground rules are important whether the dyad be a parent-child relationship or a professional one. You want to foster, support and grow the desire for the other person to succeed and achieve results that are tangible and visible. Whether it be better marks, a learned behavior or increased sales, having expectations means that each person is aware of what the desired end result is. By being aware of the end result, the roadmap on how to get there can be created.

Create a Roadmap A roadmap created between mentors and mentees can become a valuable tool to support the success of a dyad. It becomes a formal guide that is used to periodically ‘check-in’ to make sure that the intentions of the mentoring relationship are being met over time.

A roadmap is different than defining expectations or measuring the ROI, in that is defines the “how” a mentoring pair is going to focus their direction and intentions with the ROI being the arrival at their destination. The “how” can include things such as the frequency of meetings between the pair, how information is going to be communicated or learned and in what logical order, and when checkins are required for the dyad to reflect on their journey and analyze if they are on track to meet their goals.

Where a roadmap can be beneficial is when it is identified that the dyad has Page 106 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

strayed from their intended path. Maybe results are not meeting the dyad’s expectations or an anomaly has caused the pair to have to shift their intended route. For whatever reason a detour is needed, the roadmap serves as a compass, and can help the dyad assess, discuss and collaborate on a new path of least resistance together.

The key is that barriers and detours are important, and sometimes serendipitous, learning opportunities that can be powerful and value-added. Sometimes it is from deviations that we learn the most about ourselves, each other and how to respond to the situation that we are in.

The opposite perspective is that a roadmap can also validate when results and successes have been achieved along the path to the final goal. By checking-in at different times, is it possible to reflect on the results achieved up to that point and have a discussion on what has worked well or needs improvement.

This becomes an opportunity for both mentors and mentees to assess if changes are needed to either the roadmap or their boundaries and expectations.

As learning is a fluid event, mentors and mentees need to be flexible to recognize when their actions or behaviors are not providing them with the results that they want, and collaborate on how to change what they are doing to change their results.

Benefits to Establishing a Path By creating a safe environment, boundaries and expectations, and a roadmap at the beginning of a mentoring relationship, it creates a sense of ownership in both the mentor and mentee. As mentoring is about relationship building as much as it is about learning, growing and results, there will be none of the above if ownership is not defined at the onset and then re-assessed periodically throughout the relationship.

Establishing a path for success is a tool that is focused on ‘how’ the ‘what’ results will be achieved. It provides a continuum of support to both individuals, keeping them both accountable to not only each other but to themselves for their own actions and behaviors.

At the onset of mentoring, a path can help a dyad create a visual of the starting and end points and what is needed to move from one to the other. It creates the opportunity for learning to be broken into smaller chunks and experiences, one building on the other.

Smaller chunks are less overwhelming for both the mentor and mentee, as information overload is difficult to express coherently or digest easily.

Being able to reflect on what has, or has not, been working to achieve results provides insight to adjustments that need to be made to actions such as teaching or communication styles based on how information is, or is not, being learned.

By building on the initial desire that brought a dyad together, collaborating on how success is going to be achieved ties into the element of emotional engagement that I discussed in my first column. The emotional engagement is what will help drive the desire of mentors and mentees to help the other to be successful, and to remain dedicated to the roadmap when resistance and perceived barriers are encountered. The emotional engagement will also feed into the desire for the dyad to flex their communication styles with each other as the relationship grows to ensure that results and success are achieved at the end of their path.

I have heard many an attendee make negative comments and excuses about the event and lack of contacts when all they did was hug the bar and expect folks to find them. Choose to shift and reset your energy and enjoy what the event will bring you. The contacts you make may be surprising. If it’s too hard to be there frankly, it’s best to leave because the negative impression you leave affects the image of your company.

8. Interest – Become an ambassador and referral magnet.

Networking Alchemists™ create connections and make referrals whenever possible. Listen to what others are saying and pick up on keywords that help you create connections in the database of your mind.

Introduce folks you meet at the event to others you have connected with there. This keeps you “top of mind” with everyone you meet at that event and beyond. 10. Thanks and Follow up.

Networking Alchemists™ understand that followup is the most important part of networking. Without follow-up why bother networking and wasting your time? Use a card scanner to scan the business cards you collect at an event into a database. Use the database to send a “Nice to Meet You” card after each event, followed by a phone call or email to set up a meeting. Today, it’s truly easy to do face to face meetings using technology such as Skype or Google Hangout. The key is to do it! Always remember to thank the person for connecting with you. Follow up with an email or thank you note and an offer to meet again for coffee or on skye to learn more about one another.

Have a second bag with rubber bands and paper clips for business cards you collect to keep them organized. Put brochures and flyers into a file folder.

Marilyn Harris, is a true Champion for women, leading thousands of Veteran and other women into elevation today into their own expansions and elevations both personally and professionally, by providing resources and education for women business owners. Marilyn’s unique strength manifested from her foundation of challenging her own PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) into a National Movement for other Veteran Women. Leadership is born from challenge, and Marylyn magnetizes to this word, in every accomplishment she has challenged another layer of support behind women around the Nation.

Marilyn initially began her foundation of leadership and strength in her own service in the Military, as a former Medic and Certified Vocational Nurse in the U.S. Army from 1981- 1992. Military, elevated her beyond her own personal or professional career focus.

Boot Camp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV), Oklahoma State University Veterans Entrepreneurship Program (VEP), V -WISE set out to make a difference for other Military Veteran Women, as also a National Ambassador for the Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship Program.

Marilyn is courageously candid about the challenges she along with other women met with daily in her Military service including emotional control, sexual harassment or the reality of a silent code on sexual misconduct or even sexual assault within the larger Military infrastructure of higher chains of com-

Featuring Female Vets, Opportunities and Resources. did not comply with the sexual pressure, many times led for women to actually be Court Martialed or simply lowered in ranks or out casted by their male peers in a mental health brandishing to even a Dishonorable Discharge. To face extreme adversity and discounted violations is in itself a woman’s greatest test, but to Champion one’s experiences and support other women on the vast level that Marilyn has initiated, reflects on her depth of moral integrity. It was not enough for Marylyn Harris to accept the Military Silent Code in her days of service, and upon her return to the public sector after her service, she had to address her own Military Sexual Trauma and PTSD issues by regularly attending Combat Woman Support Groups. In any roads of violation, elevation can manifest a purpose and growth for thousands of other women. Marylyn returned to her Nursing career and growth in her own Home Health Consultant business while continuing in education, yet she was always aware there was a need to manifest a change, an elevation and support behind Veteran Women.

In 2009, Marylyn researched with many colleagues, in realization Veteran Women in our Country were missing supportive alliances in growing their own economic stability and wealth generating companies after leaving the Military. In her devotion to synergy, Center, designed to assist the growth of potential of thousands of women veterans across first the region and soon the nation.

Marylyn launched the Nation’s first and only Women Veterans’ Business More than 30,000 women veterans in her local Houston office and eventually over 191,000 across the entire state of Texas received support in their own needs to actualize their economic growth in success in their developments of their own businesses. The Mission of the Women Veterans Business Center (WVBC), located in Houston, TX is to educate and empower women veterans, and their families who together work towards empowerment of women veterans after post-Military challenges many face, including potential PTSD, unemployment, depression or even mental illness or homelessness without the support behind their recovery and economic growth.

Marylyn Harris only fittingly as a “Champion” and one that elevates “Change” in her daily support behind over two hundred thousand veteran women, was met with a very surprising phone call which appeared on her Caller ID, as “White House,” in a day, like no other she will never forget. She received a call from the White House, with invitation with her family to receive her “Champion of Change Award.” She had been nominated without her knowledge, and elected the recipient of this Honorable Award in 2013, meeting President Obama and the First Lady. Marylyn continues to be Honored with various Awards and was recognized as a Veteran Business Champion of the Year for five- state Small Business Administration Region VI. Boccadigabbia is an Italian winery situated on the hills in front of the Adriatic Sea, just outside Civitanova in Le Marche. The Alessandri family who bought it directly from the last pretender to the French Imperial Crown, namely Prince Luigi Napoleon Bonaparte, owns the winery. Today the Alessandri family continues the tradition of cultivating French grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir as well as Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio in their vineyards. In 1996, the family extended their land further by purchasing the wine estate Villamagna, which is situated on the Montanello hills close to Macerata. grape varieties such as Montepulciano, Maceratino, Sangiovese, Malvasia di Candia, and Verdicchio.

Walking in the footsteps of Napoleon In the early 19th century, in the wake of the French Revolution so to say, the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte founded the Kingdom of Italy in 1805 being a French client state and very much influenced by the ideas of revolutionary France. Napoleon I became thus King of Italy while he nominated his stepson Eugène de Beauharnais to viceroy.

A French-inspired administration was adopted where the Italian states were divided into departments and districts. Here I am not going to dwell too much on the French system, but in 1808 as a result of the dissolution of the Papal States, the Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

region Le Marche, among other central Italian regions, were included in Napoleon’s Kingdom of Italy and three new departments were instituted. Thereafter, in 1810 the viceroy Eugène de Beauharnais received 2,300 farm estates and about 130 palaces in the Marche region as an appanage. At the Congress in Vienna in 1815, the leading European powers decided that these properties could remain in the hands of Eugène de Beauharnais.

Now why is this interesting? Well, because the farm Boccadigabbia was one of these, so-called, Bonaparte possessions in Le Marche that were then transferred to Eugène de Beauharnais. In Civitanova, the number of estates belonging to the Bonaparte administration was around a hundred.

part of a larger estate named Fontespina, which after World War II was divided into smaller land lots and sold off. The Boccadigabbia farm continued to belong to members of the Bonaparte family until 1956 when, as mentioned above, the Alessandri family bought it. An interesting detail is that you can still find an old ceramic tile in the farmhouse bearing the name of Boccadigabbia with the Napoleonic coat of arms above.

of a more local and traditional wine production. However, it was decided in the 1980s to revive the old French tradition by replanting grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir at the estate. Together with the grape varieties they are cultivating at the Villamagna estate, they produce an impressive range of wines of very high quality, whites, as well as reds.

have been the strongest wines produced in Le Marche, thus putting historically powerful wines such as the French-inspired Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the back seat. Furthermore, the family suffered another dark period in the late 2000s due to a sad tragedy for one of their employees. However, they are now back with enthusiasm and energy trying to get the winery back on track and spreading the word again about their impressive French-inspired wines, as well as the wines produced from more native grape varieties.

My visit to Boccadigabbia About a month ago, I visited this winery for a vertical* wine tasting they had organized for a group of wine writers, bloggers and wine makers via their PR firm for wine marketing.

During the first evening, we were all invited for a dinner at the fish restaurant Ardesia in Civitanova just by the sea front. While entering the restaurant I got a sort of flash back thinking I had already been there, but as I had been to a cocktail bar called Hemingway when I was last in Civitanova I thought I might be mistaken. Later on, Elvidio told me that it used to be a cocktail bar, indeed, so I was actually having dinner in the same place where I had had a drink some years before. Talk about funny coincidences. The evening was fun with Elvidio, his son Lorenzo and his daughter Agnese entertaining with stories about the family, their winery, and the Civitanova area.

During the dinner, we had the opportunity to taste several different wines from Boccadigabbia paired with the delicious fish courses. We started out with their white wine, Le Grane Colli Maceratesi Ribona DOC 2014, which is a 100% Ribona wine.

The Ribona, also called Maceratino, is a native grape variety that is only grown in the district around Macerata. It is a wine with a straw yellow hue and notes of citrus fruits and other ripe yellow fruits. It is a fresh, salty, and well-structured wine with a slightly bitter aftertaste.

With the appetizers, we also had their Pecorino Falerio DOC 2014 which is a 100% pecorino wine. The pecorino grape is another native variety in Le Marche. It is a straw yellow wine with fruity as well as smoky influences and notes of flint, and almonds. Overall, it is a very elegant and full-bodied white wine. It pairs well with seafood, but also with veal, chicken, and other white meat dishes.

Chardonnay Marche 2007, which is a 100% Chardonnay wine. The wine gets its name from an old castle in the area, Mons Alperti.

This is a wonderful Chardonnay from Boccadigabbia and while you are sipping on this wine it makes you think of the white wines from Bourgogne. It is fermented and aged for 4-5 months in Allier barriques, after which aging is continued in steel vats and in bottle.

This certainly contributes to its structure and elegance. It is a smooth and full-bodied wine with aromas of ripe fruit such as pear and plum, with a rich and warm taste.

Later on with the second fish courses, such as the delicious polenta and monkfish or a mix of fried fish, we also tasted some of their red wines. These were their Rosso Piceno DOC which is a blend of 50% Montepulciano and 50% Sangiovese, the Saltapicchio San Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

giovese Marche IGT (100% Sangiovese) and Pix Merlot 2010. They are all interesting red wines that can be paired with meat dishes of different structure.

An Akronte vertical wine tasting The following morning we woke up to a beautiful and sunny day, having breakfast with a view of the sea. It was the D-day, when we were to attend the vertical wine tasting of Boccadigabbia’s flagship wine, Akronte. This is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine that was named after the river Caronte that runs in between the vineyards.

We tasted vintages ranging from 1992 to 2010 covering different internal phases and trends in the winery’s production of this important red wine. Akronte is a wine which Page 146 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

has a long maturation on the grape skins followed by aging for 18-20 months in French barriques and finally in bottle for several months. Thus, it is a full-bodied and well-structured wine with a long aging potential. It is a fresh wine with in general notes of fruit, flowers, spices, and under vegetation.

The first battery of vintages we tasted going from 1992 to 1998 followed by the second battery from 2000 to 2008 clearly delineated the longevity of the wines. The wines were indeed still going strong after many years presenting smooth tannins, considerable freshness, and persistence. notice a considerable change, in fact Boccadigabbia made substantial changes in 2010 deciding to take on Emiliano Falsini as an external oenologist and consultant working side by side with their own oenologist and wine maker Francesco Pennesi. The new trend from 2010 presents a different Cabernet Sauvignon from Boccadigabbia, not diminishing the importance of the earlier decades though. The 2010 is a very complex wine with an impressive freshness, with notes of flowers, fruits (a bit different fruity character than before), grass, and minerality. Overall, a wine with a great potential and very much similar to the Cabernet Sauvignon wines from Bordeaux.

They also have a wine shop in the center of Civitanova in case you want to stop by to purchase their wines. The area around Civitanova is beautiful being located just by the sea. Therefore, you can enjoy the beach as well as touring the inland and discovering Boccadigabbia as well as other wineries in the area. *A vertical wine tasting is when you

My Wine Story

From Sweden to Chianti From a small town in southern Sweden to the heart of Chianti and Florence in Italy, my journey started in Ystad, which used to be known as a smugglers nest during the Hanseatic Era, while today it is the place where the police inspector Wallander solves crimes.

It is an idyllic small town by the seaside. My journey thus started in Sweden, bringing me to Florence a bit more than 15 years ago to do a Ph.D in history at the research institute of the European Union. After receiving my Ph.D. and teaching Modern History at the university for a couple of years, I decided to stay in Florence, changing my career path by using my second degree in languages and becoming a freelance Page 148 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

My interest in wine has always been there throughout my years in Italy, however it was only roughly 5 years ago that I decided to try out a sommelier course. I had seen an advertisement on Facebook about the local Fisar course in the center of Florence, and I thought it sounded very exciting. (Fisar is one of the Italian sommelier associations and they organize courses where you get accredited as a sommelier.) Therefore, I convinced a friend to come with me, even though she actually didn’t drink much and still does not. This turned out to be one of the best ideas I have had in recent years, as it brought us to discover a new and fascinating world of oenology, wine history, wine tastings, and much more. It all lead us to continue the course, attending all three levels in one sweep. For about three years now, I have been a sommelier and it is a genuinely fulfilling passion where you learn something new and meet interesting people in the Italian wine world almost every day.Fresh as a sommelier, I started elaborating my idea about combining wine and translation. Together with some fellow sommeliers from Fisar and a British translator colleague, we developed the concept Words & Wine. This one-day seminar on wine terminology in Italian and English was held in Florence nearly 3 years ago. I continued to develop this wine and terminology concept to better fit a translator-

The first of these seminars was held at the wine estate Il Borro (near Arezzo) in June 2014. In the autumn of 2014, we organized another Words at the Winery seminar at the winery Feudi di San Gregorio, near Avellino. During last year, I held smaller informal minicourses about wine in Tuscany and a wine tasting every now and then together with my fellow sommelier, Nadia Padrin, and for Fisar Firenze.

At the moment, I am working on putting together a new seminar on wine terminology in English for translators and people in the wine and tourism sector.

Ingredients  1/2 15 ounce package rolled refrigerated unbaked pie crust (1 crust)  1 tablespoon olive oil  1 cup finely chopped leeks (white part only)  1/2 cup finely chopped fresh fennel  3/4 cup coarsely chopped kalamata olives  1 tablespoon snipped fresh thyme  4 ounces Gruyere cheese, shredded (1 cup)  Snipped fresh fennel tops (optional) Page 151 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Procedure: 1. Allow pie crust to stand at room temperature according to package directions. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside. Roll pastry into an 11-inch circle on prepared baking sheet.

In a medium skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.

Cook leeks and fennel in hot oil for 5 to 6 minutes or until tender but not brown. Remove from heat. Stir in olives and thyme. Cool slightly.

3.

Spread mixture in the center of the pastry, leaving a 1-1/2-inch rim uncovered on the edge. Fold uncovered pasty up over filling. Top with cheese.

4.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until pastry is golden. If desired, sprinkle with snipped fennel tops. Cut into wedges and serve warm. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Make Ahead Tip Prepare as directed through step 3. Cover and chill for up to 24 hours. Continue as directed in step 4.

This year has been a time of many terrorist attacks in our world. These are expected to escalate, making this a more critical time than ever. Security measures taken by governments are not a guarantee they will not happen again, nor are diplomacy efforts by global leaders. Media in all forms has inundated all people, and the dramatic visual coverage seems endless. So what about our children?

They have been exposed to a dangerous view of humanity when they should be enjoying an innocent childhood. As parents we do everything we can to shield our children from bad news, but when breaking news hits the media it’s unavoidable. Images of mangled bodies as well as buildings permeate television screens and Page 156 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

social media. The reality of these attack require conversations with our children, because they are listening to ours. What they hear, after what they see, is up to us, and we can’t be silent. Whether attacks are in the France, Kenya, Iraq, Nigeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Cameroon, Chad, Israel’s West Bank, the United Kingdom, or the United States, we adults find ourselves in disbelief. Consider how our children must be feeling. How they process senseless, inhumane, and cowardly acts of domestic and global terrorism has the same impact as it has on adults, so they need wellinformed adults to help them understand and mitigate their fears. We are faced with finding the right words to use to deal with the collective and personal feelings Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

apprehensive, fearful, and insecure. Finding effective ways to reassure our children is necessary. We must let them know that we understand their confusion, but what is the best way to support and guide during these difficult times?

The best advice I can give to parents, family members, caregivers, and teachers is to offer your child reassurance that they are safe. Professional bereavement counselors are experts on this matter, and they recommend four actions we can take: 1. Language matters: For children of all ages, the most important thing is to reassure them that they are safe. Do not get into the political context with primary-aged children. That may come up in Page 157 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

conversation with older children, but the importance at any age is offering the reassurance that they are safe. For pre-school children, use concrete language: do not say, “This person went to sleep” or “We’ve lost that person” - because that could instill fear or anxiety in that child about going to sleep.

In addition, what does “They are lost at the mall” mean? Be accurate and mindful of the impact of your language. It is usually not until the age of five or six years old that children understand that death is permanent.

2. Age-appropriate conversations: For preschool, think about how much exposure your children have had. Maybe they have overheard the news, so the conversation could be Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

quite brief: acknowledge what has happened, and say that lots of people have died because of a bad incident. You can say that we do not know why this has happened.

3. The perpetrators: You should talk about a bad action or behavior - not bad people.

With children, you must be careful about the language: people aren’t bad - it’s something bad that they’ve done - this helps prevent anxiety in children, and fears that ‘bad people’ are coming to get them.

4. Social media awareness: Secondary school aged children will have come across news about terror attacks already on social media. Remind them that some of the things they have read there may be incorrect. Have a conversation with your child about what they think has happened.

Talk about the images they have seen these can be more powerful than words. If they see an image, and haven’t had a conversation with someone they trust, they will build up these images something that is so big that it’s unmanageable for them; you don’t want a child to start fantasizing that someone is going to come after them. There’s good advice from experts like Sally Peck, an American who writes for the Telegraph, one of the United Kingdoms biggest newspapers.

As a former primary school teacher and university lecturer, she offers some great suggestions I have found effective: • Promote peace: I explained to my grandchildren, who range from pre-K to college, the facts of what had happened, I try to shift their focus Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

towards the coming together of the people in these terror attacks, those who are the helpers, who are providing aid to the injured, and to know that people around the world are working to keep everyone safe.

If your children are watching media show them the ambulance workers, doctors, security workers visible in scenes from the attacks who are helping people to be safe.

We need to let our children know that the majority of the world wants peace. As Fred Rogers, the American children’s television host and a childhood hero to many, was fond of saying, “Whenever there is a catastrophe, always look for the helpers because if you look for the helpers, then you’ll know there’s hope.”Shield them: Certain politicians’ dangerous reactions that terrorists were carrying out “an organized attempt to destroy Western civilization,” it gives the terrorists more perceived power than they deserve. Hysteria is exactly what the people carrying out these acts want, and it is exactly this sort of hysteria from which we need to protect our children. Keeping a level head during times of uncertainty and fear is the adult’s job. We must demonstrate strength to our children because that is what will empower them as opposed to frightening them into more anxiety or panic.

Our children are processing a great deal of information, more than we adults ever had to deal with when we were kids. The greatest gift we can give them is hope for their future as they process senseless acts in this very large world in which they live, and are learning to be Page 159 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

By Laura Brin In 2016, millions of women around the world are breaking through glass ceilings and following dreams their mothers never dared to dream.

Even so, many working women are left with a nagging guilt, wondering how their ambitions will affect their family life.

In countries served by HER: Hope. Educate.

Rise, Central Asia Institute’s (CAI) social fundraising initiative to support women’s education in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, the first generation of educated women will face these same challenges. However, these women know the pursuit of higher education will pave the way for their daughters to create better lives.

A growing number of studies suggest working mothers and mothers with advanced degrees create a strong legacy for their daughters to follow.

In a 2011 study for the Utah Women and Education Project found that mothers have a huge influence on their daughters’ decisions to attend college. The study found the most important thing a mother can do to encourage her daughter to attend school is to be an active role model. Daughters of college educated mothers and mothers who encouraged them to attend college were more likely to enroll than daughters with mothers who did not.

Many social studies focus on the disadvantages children face when mothers join the workforce.

Reading these stories can undermine a woman’s choices. Women around the world wonder, “Am I doing the right thing?”

Just by attending college, talking with children about college, or helping with homework and applications, children have a better chance at completing education. When mothers value education and careers, daughters are more likely to chase dreams of their own.

In short, the answer is “yes”. Children, especially daughters, reap huge benefits when their

maternal influence was the leading factor that determined whether children stayed in school or left before graduating.

According to the study, “Researchers found that for every year a woman stayed in full-time education, the likelihood of her daughter also staying for an extra year increased by 20%.”

A college degree and career path are help close the perceived gender gap in families, and women are a strong academic role model for their children. While women are at work, their daughters are inspired.

They look to their mothers as role models and dream of their own futures.

This trend is spreading around the world. Women are attaining higher degrees: Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorates. Their daughters are learning there are no limits to their futures. When mom is the head of a company, starts her own business, or works outside the home, daughters grow up imaging themselves in those roles. The legacy they leave for their daughters means she has less doubt about her Page 164 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

abilities and a wider array of opportunities.

The studies that support these educational benefits in children of educated and working mothers are growing. We’re learning more details about how they bestow their legacies on their children.

In 2015 the New York Times reported on one of the most comprehensive studies that follows the link between maternal education and education of daughters. The study covers 50,000 adults in 25 countries and reports on education, work status, and income.

The article explains, “Daughters of working mothers completed more years of education, were more likely to be employed and in supervisory roles and earned higher incomes.”

These findings can be echoed all over Central Asia where women have earned degrees and returned home to help their villages. In countries that face extreme poverty, instability, and threats from war; an educated woman can bring hope to her entire village along with empowering her daughters.

In these countries the child of literate woman has a 50% greater chance of surviving past the age of five. If just 1% of women attend Secondary Education classes, a country’s GDP increases by .3%. An educated woman is more than twice as likely to send her daughter to school, rather than keep her home to help with the household. Educating one girl empowers an entire community, and the benefits will continue for generations.

CAI has been working to educate girls in Central Asia for decades. The organization has laid the groundwork for the legacy of education and upward mobility for hundreds of women. The first girls who studied at CAI supported schools and continued on to secondary educations now have families of their own. They are the first generation of role models who will leave a new legacy for their daughters.

Jahan Ali was one of the first girls to graduate from the first CAI supported Korphe School in Baltistan, Pakistan. Before CAI, Jahan’s future looked very different in her isolated village near at the base of K2, the second highest mountain in the world.

Jahan’s mother died when she was young and her father, the son of the village Chief, was often away tending to the duties of the village. With no school in the region, the Jahan and her siblings had little hope of becoming more than subsistence farmers.

When the school was built with funds from CAI, Jahan studied voraciously. Once she reached eighth grade she knew she wanted more. She saw herself as a doctor, a healthcare worker, or a teacher. For the first time she and other girls in her village could dream about new possibilities.

CAI sponsored Jahan to continue her studies and obtain a secondary education in Skardu, the capital city of Baltistan. She lived with male relatives and had to get used to the noise, traffic and new social norms of the city. She studied hard and finished Page 165 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

two years of secondary education and four years at Skardu Government Degree College for Girls where she studied to be a “Ladies Healthcare Worker.”

“My life is really changed because CAI supports my education and now I am educated,” Jahan says. “I am standing next to all those girls getting education and I am so proud. If CAI didn’t help, I would be in my area, in my village, not knowing anything.”

Her appetite for knowledge has not wavered. She attended classes to learn English, computer skills, and often took supplemental classes during vacations. Jahan also earned a degree in Psychology and Education. She wants to be a teacher and inspire other girls to pursue higher education.

“I want to get master’s degree in English,” she explains. “And then I want to teach in one of ‘Dr. Greg’s’ schools. I want to help many people in Braldu Valley.”

Jahan married in November of 2010 and had her first child one year later. With support from CAI, she relocated to a larger city to pursue her advanced degree. She has joined the tribe of women balancing higher education, a job and family duties. She has joined the tribe of women whose education creates new opportunities for her children and the young girls she will teach in the future.

There are hundreds of girls like Jahan who are changing the way their daughters will see the world. They are creating a legacy of peace, hope and the ability to dream. This isn’t to say that we don’t appreciate people in life, relationally, professionally, or appreciate things that make an experience in life more enjoyable.

But there is a profound difference in the knowing. What is your mind telling you, and what does your heart know? That internal knowing is what bridges the gap between suffering and peace. Between fear, and love. Fear tells you, ‘I want to make you safe.’ Love tells you, ‘You are safe.’ Love is truth. Fear is not. Fear is an illusion that lives in your thoughts.

What about the desires in your thoughts that run your life, convincing you that until you have them, you cannot be happy? What is the internal dialogue that you are constantly listening to sound like? You cannot be happy until you get the promotion. You cannot be happy until you own the company. You cannot be happy until you are married. You cannot be happy until you have a child. You cannot be happy until you get that mortgage and live in the house of your dreams. You cannot be happy until you pay off that mortgage. You cannot be happy unless the courts award you custody of the children. You cannot be happy unless you have been validated by every person in life that you demand attention and acceptance from. Does any of this sound familiar?

Thoughts will sabotage you. The mind can be a blessing or a curse. When we let go of desire, the identification of desirous thoughts, there will be a sense of freedom.

Peace. After all, our natural being is to be without need. This is where true peace is found. I heard someone tell me once, “Free and rich are the ones who want nothing.

Even from God.” This really resonated with me, because at that point in life, after experiencing many challenges, I had already come to the realization that nothing is forever, and everything is for a while. This is truth. This is freedom. Knowing this gives you the power back to the only thing that is real. And the only thing that is real, is the present moment. Knowing this allows you to live in love, and not fear. When you can let go of the mental noise and conditioned mind patterns that have been running your life, you can begin to release all hindrance or restraints that have been stopping you from embracing the true reflection of life itself. Life itself is love. Not want. Life itself is being. Not waiting to become. Life itself is now. Not past or future.

Instead of focusing completely on the thinking mind, begin to put your attention within.

Shut off the chatter in the mind, and practice this by simple meditation. It need not be complicated. Don’t order, wish, complain, or cry out for things. Rather get still, focus within, and listen to what your heart is trying to tell you. This is meditation. It is being still in your mind. It is part of every tradition in the world. It has nothing to do with religion, belief, idolatry or doctrine.

Many confuse this with prayer. There is a difference between prayer and meditation.

Prayer is your speaking to God. Meditation is allowing God or Spirit to speak to you.

But it speaks in silence. And it is in that silence that it begins to manifest into intuition, inspiration, which means in Spirit, and

enthusiasm (enthios), which means to be in touch with God. Prayer is going outward, and meditation is going inward.

Meditation is to be still, and know. “Be still and know that I am God” {Psalm 46:10}

For those of you that have already begun to take personal steps toward inner growth, I honor you in your journey. As you stay open to this presence, you will begin to see things manifest outwardly in life as you begin to express love from within. Surround yourself with loving people and walk toward peaceful environments. Embrace the grace that you are so deserving of, as thwarted wanting is no longer inhabiting your thoughts.

Stop looking to the world for fulfillment, happiness, validation and love. You were given the Divine gift of love within that far exceeds any temporary pleasure that the external world can bring. This love is infinite. This love is eternal. No one and no experience has the power to take it away. It is your free gift. It is locked in a safe within your heart but you have the key. As you open it, you will dwell in the realm of where true joy resides. This joy is triumph. To find triumph is to have found success. It is to have found the one thing that truly matters. Because the truth is success is not a destination you arrive at, or a title that you achieve. You don’t arrive at it because you already have it. Success is inherent. It is an immanent attribute that dwells deep within. It’s there. You just need to find it. And to find it, is to have achieved the secret to success. another person or thing, rather as a state of being. Knowing that it is not something outside in the world, but is something that is within. It is infinitely greater than anything this world can offer. This is the knowing.

This is your bridge that will fill the gap and take you from suffering into peace. It is your return to love.

In last month’s article titled “Power and Control”, I discussed the characteristics of Domestic Violence and gave support and solutions in how to get your power back. To further assist my readers that are now taking positive actions toward non-violence because of this, I invite you to find that Divine love that dwells deeply within, and begin to build the bridge that will lead you out of suffering. Be encouraged to walk away from the dark clouds of power and control, and walk toward the love and light that awaits you. Know that you are so special, and are such an important part of the Universe.

Know that you are an expression of love itself, which is now a bright, warm light inside your heart. And that light will never leave you. You may need guidance and reminders on how to return to that love, but know that the potential is always there to live in that love. Love is a state of being, that arises when you open up to that inner awareness.

As you become self-fulfilled, and know who you are, non-violence will prevail. Nonthreatening behavior will be the only behavior that you accept where someone speaks and acts in a way that allows you to feel safe and comfortable when you express yourself. that respects each other’s emotions and feelings. You will only have relationships of trust that supports each other’s goals, activities, and friends. Instead of being in controlling relationships, as in the past, you will now only accept equality in relationships.

I propose, however, that after you walk away from a domestically violent relationship, you take the inner time that is needed for you. Don’t have any intimate relationships for a while. Put the focus on yourself internally. I suggest that as a woman, you examine your inner self, and do your spiritual work before engaging in a new relationship.

After that time, it may be that you are completely fulfilled as a single person, and that’s completely fine too. During my alone years, which

hardly felt lonely, I experienced the best times discovering the essence of who I was. I became so alive and open to experiencing the wonders of life. The beauty of it all, is that we are constantly discovering, and growing, and loving internally every moment. This is our gift. This is our treasure. Knowing that we can always go within for answers, for love, and for peace is such a beautiful thing, because the struggle stops. When there is no more struggle, we can begin to express love in so many ways, specifically and most importantly to oneself. One wrong relationship can

lead you into suffering for many, many, years. Because of my personal past experience I implore you to stand tall. Be brave and proud of the person that you were incarnated on this earth to be. You don’t want to just survive the challenges at hand, do you?

No. Rather, you want to thrive the challenges and keep them under foot. Choose your path and choose it with wisdom, not ignorance.

With love, and not fear. Stand aside for no man or woman that denies you of your very essence and purpose in life. Don’t waste precious ‘now’ moments to flourish. See your path clearly and walk from strength to strength.

It is not all about the struggle. That is a lie! It is all about how long you are willing to suffer.

Stop living life in a Hallmark quote that you found on-line or on Facebook that tells your ego that this is the way life is.

Life itself is always the present moment.

Life is safe and infinite. Not dangerous and fleeting. It is the present moment, and is where love dwells. It is your inner purpose, and it never changes. Your outer life deals with time and space. What you manifest through circumstances, people, happenings and events will always depend on your choice. Choose to love, not fear. Choose to be present, and let go of ego. Letting go of the ego, the identification of thought, is the end of suffering. The external life experiences change all of the time. It must, or we would never evolve. If you can stay present, and live through your inner purpose which is always the present moment, you can manifest a loving and balanced outer purpose, no matter what challenges arise.

Is a leader born or is a leader chosen? Can you learn it or is it an innate talent only displayed by a select few?

Leadership is one of those ambiguous terms that is often thrown around like jargon- yes I’m a leader…we need a leader…follow the leader. Over the next several articles I am going to discuss the impact power, passion, character and transformation all have on us and why they are so tightly tethered to our ability to recognize leaders. How do we nurture leadership within ourselves in such a way that we are uniquely transformed?

When we were kids that game- follow the leader was about doing what the guy in the front was doing. If he climbed a ladder-we climbed a ladder and if he did jumping jacksso did you. Just do what that guy did and you were a great follower; conversely they were a great leader. It was easy to see who was the leader in that context- it was the person making all the decisions and going first.

It’s much more complicated now that we are adults. We don’t want to blindly follow- but in many of our work environments and industries that is what is asked of us and required of us if we want to stay gainfully employed. It is often confusing, and rightfully, so to understand who amongst us is worthy of being followed.

Passion is Power In the infancy of our careers we had goals and dreams about our future and identities within our professions. It is important to have that to fuel the hard work and uphill climb to success. Passion was our food- our mainstay- to weather the storms of disappointment and disillusionment about how to manage significant decisions and complex situations. Passion is the necessary ingredient that makes all the work worth it. Without passion- anything we do is drudgery.

I am not suggesting that every passionate person is always energetic or sure of their direction; or even enjoying where they are in their journey.

No- passion isn’t so mundane as to be considered a superficial emotional state. Rather, passion is a mental state of determination, endurance and unflappable faith. The expression of passion can be widely varied and if we look closely, is the fundamental link that identifies leaders from followers. Passion has nothing to do with position, education, privilege or acknowledgement. It comes from a deeply nurtured sense of self and recognition of how you want to live your life.

Anything you do- if you do it well- taps into your passion. I am convinced it is the lifeblood of leadership. The more passion you bring to your work and your tasks the more likely you will be recognized as a leader. Passion translates to power. The power to make change happen- not “out there” but within YOU first and foremost. Passion allows your character to develop and grow in such a way that it influences your decision matrix so profoundly- you cannot imagine making a decision that isn’t grounded in who you are and what you value. Passion is the power to transform ourselves and others; to deliver on the impossible and challenge limits.

Passion and Character I don’t believe leaders are few and far between. I also don’t believe that they come with significant titles or high paid positions. I believe that leadership is linked to passion in such a way that if you find and fuel someone in what they are passionate about- they will evolve in their character in such a way that they will be valued and recognized as leaders. I believe that the transformation of passion into power can be engaged by anyone willing to examine and apply this to themselves first.

So- if a leader can be me and can be you- then what is it exactly that we need to do with our character to make that happen? I don’t think it’s an organic thing inthat it doesn’t require a focused effort. Transformation doesn’t just “happen”. The vulnerability and awareness it takes to move from one state to another is either chosen or avoided. am suggesting we have some measure of control over what we do in response to our circumstances. Leadership that transforms does so without cohersion. There is a certain measure of strength that is found in gentle persuasion and genuine concern for others. Sometimes leaders must know when to take a stand and draw their sword for battle; but the most significant piece of highly influential leaders is their ability to bend and nurture others. Knowing when to be Joan of Arc and when to be Mother Teresea requires dedication to personal transformation so you know when these things are required of you. Nothing is worse than misinterpreting a situation and commanding the room with an inappropriate display of your power as a leader. We can all think of people who have done this with devastating effect.

The challenge facing many women in leadership is exactly that- they have been taught that power only comes with the ability to force change. Power is about not being swayed to consider alternatives and to be unswervingly focused on the predetermined outcomes we intended to manifest when we began. Power has become a distinctly masculine enterprise with very specific examples and outcomes that typically revolve around leaders who were men. Right or wrong- women face a unique set of challenges in showing their character (both masculine and feminine) and understanding that both types of character attributes are indications of power and passion.

Power and Promise The concept of servanthood and its relationship to power has been a topic of discussion amongst leadership scholars for over a decade. What is it about serving others that makes leaders so effective? measure because they understand that their actions are done on behalf of those they lead. The invitation now is to accept that well-rounded character is more powerful than how hard you can fight.

1) Listening At first glance listening might seem to be an “others” centered skill. Can you be attentive, seek information and connect. Yes – it is all those things.

However, listening is also the act of applying agape love to focus on our inner voice and listen to our spirit.

There have been many times where my gut, my spirit or my body have given me messages about the decisions I faced that I ignored. I was listening to others but not to myself. I valued others but not what my heart was telling me. There is power in listening to the communication we receive from within. Power because if we do not honor who we are as people we cannot honor others.

I have thrown myself on my own sword more times than I can count. I did so because I mistakenly thought that in order to demonstrate I could listen I was required to shelf the feelings and thoughts I was having about the circumstances I engaged. I think that many women misinterpret listening and the concept of being “selfless” in their listening strategies to the point where their ability to be genuine is ultimately removed. How can we listen to others if we are not truly present? If we are not completely honest within our self-communication.

context of YOU comes from listening intently to what your spirit says so that you can offer with deep sincerity that gift to others. The ability to transform our character through listening allows us to contribute reflectively to the growth of others. THAT is power.

2) Empathy How many times have you been told “I understand” and you got the distinct message that what was meant was “stop talking about this” or “I don’t really care so I don’t need this level of detail” or “I gave you an answer so I’m not required to do anything further”? Did you feel understood? Did you feel heard?

Empathy and listening have deep connections to one another. They are both required for us to see people as people and not as their behavior. Empathy enables us to hear what isn’t being said and to connect with the experience someone else is having. To be misunderstood is to remove any chance at trust, faith and allegiance to a leader. han remove it or negate it. Empathy gives importance to listening so that we can connect our hearts to another. Leaders who nurture their ability to temper listening and empathy with their passion are able to unite people in ways that are seemingly impossible. “I can hear what you’re not saying” is the hallmark of empathy.

There have been times when I have sat at tables with people who have the positional power to impact the lives of countless others. I have heard their words and their versions of “law”, “rights”, and “policy”. Yes- they are correct some of the time and are making logical decisionthat are void of empathy. I am convinced

that this is reciprocal in that they are not understood to be truly afraid of failing or rejected within their roles to step into the arena of listening empathetically. So-who should start? Should it be the one with the positional power who should display empathy?

Well, no. Leadership isn’t about position; it’s about character. What moves the room and has the highest impact is to listen for the emotion and experience of others. Their frustrations, their inadequacies, their fears. When I have done that I have chosen not to wield my sword and spout policy or law back- but to acknowledge that they feel stuck or cornered. It has been empathy that brings change and shifts toward trust. Passion and Character and Power…Oh my!

Listening and empathy are just two of many characteristics that women in leadership must return to and deliberately engage. Our power comes from the combination of our character and our wiliness to deliberately transform ourselves from a one dimensional understanding of leadership to an inclusive paradigm that honors listening and empathy as tools that inspire others.

As you reflect on your definitions of leadership and how your passion has been either built or sapped- ask yourself how much of that has to do with your definitions of who you are as a leader and how much effort you have placed on your own character

in that definition.

Leaders are not born- but they sure are people who understand they must grow or fail in the task of leadership.

Here Runs Girl Powerrr!!

Students Run LA Non Profit Foundation elevated our Olympic Trial year’s 2016 LA Marathon with an uplifting growth this year in “Girl Power!” It seems like only yesterday, when we were all teenage girls striving for our athletic dreams. Remember reading about Gail Devers who overcame disabling Grave’s Disease, placing in the globe’s top ranked as a 100 meter hurdler in her Track & Field career? Wilma Rudolph, at age nine (9), tossed away her leg braces she wore daily from being born with Polio and shocked the world as she elevated to become the first woman ever to win three (3) Gold Medals in the 1960’s Olympics, and reminding us of the impact of just those two words, “Girl Power!”

Students Run LA’s Co-Founder Eric Spears, shared the Non Profit program has uplifted each student girl or boy into goal setting and realizing their achievements from this large number of Secondary and At Risk Low Income School Students.

SRLA Marathon Youth Running Training program with 175 Public Schools and 3200 teenagers ages 13-17 participating in our Nation’s inspiration for more than a handful of teenagers outside of LA today. The LA Marathon Producer and Conqur Endurance CEO “Chief,” Tracey Russell and Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti are amongst numerous company and city generous sponsors who have supported this program’s growth and publicity since its initial beginnings of Harry Shabazian, an East Los Angeles Continuation High School Teacher, challenging his students to train by his side after his exhilarating completion of the LA Marathon.

Downtown Value student, Maricela Arcos, age 14 in her second year running the LA Marathon, shared before she joined the SRLA program, she was similar to her peers and never set any goals for herself.

Marathon at age 13, attends the same Downtown Value School, and grew up observing her athletic family since she was only eight years old, cheering for her father who completed five yearly Marathons. Rebecca shared her mature views, “Many kids my age associate exercise as something negative, however this experience is so much fun and I am building real friendships. I have grown through this athletic challenge to truly believe in myself. I also have more focus in my academics and found the balance of my education and my training time with SRLA.” Rebecca, a possible future Coach, also wished to share with her many school friends who have not challenged themselves in this program. “It is not about being the fastest runner. It is about persevering in endurance training and growing daily till you believe in yourself.” Valeria Rodriguez, age 15 loved the challenge of training and running in her first LA Marathon in her sophomore high school year. Valeria found running the LA Marathon a foundation for any life challenge in her future. Valeria shared, “My memory of the coaches training and actually completing this 26 mile Marathon challenge will inspire me for the rest of my life.” Our interviews spoke for themselves how many girls are challenging others to keep up with their pace! ONE WOMAN’S CHALLENGE IS ANOTHER WOMAN’S TRIUMPH! Mexico City born Alicia Ibera, the #1 2016 LA Wheelchair Marathon runner, in her early 20’s, found her life’s Dream within her beginning journey of challenge. Her worries or expectations are few, but her determination and passion surpasses any limited thoughts since her childhood. Our own support behind Wheelchair Athletes rarely was about the race as much as we found the depth of the story in the journey to that race day. Alicia was a special interview as she frequently laughed and was so passionate even in her tears of joy in her communications with me. She shared her constant gratitude for what she describes as “God’s with a beaming smile after winning the LA Marathon Page 191 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

placing 02:15:56 for “Top Wheel Women,” Alicia was raised in a Blessing.” In her very early years, long before I met her small town in Mexico City. Her early years were met with medical confusion and she was under hospital care in the years children are running and playing outside. Her diagnosis and treatment was not addressed in its early stages and finally after years of hospitals and pain in her leg, she was diagnosed with Cancer. The Doctor in Mexico had decided when Alicia was a young girl, the cancer and infection was too deep and the only “cure” was to amputate her leg below the knee. Alicia shared this initial foundation in her childhood truly was God’s Blessing to guide her life into challenge of the roads less followed. She was a single mother at a young age and yet the first time she observed the Wheelchair Athletic Events and heard about the Paralympic Games, her heart’s passion awakened and her life’s fire was ignited without any hesitation.

Alicia Ibera is in her early 20’s and filled with joy after she expresses her faith in God’s guiding journey for her life, has filled her heart with gratitude and never any bitterness or resentment. She truly was such an inspiration to interview, Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

I have to share her audio interview today. She inspires those athletes without any loss of limb, and the millions of single mothers who can’t find the time to challenge themselves. Alicia Ibera is a spiritually grounded and strong leader for all women in her resilience and beyond her Marathon Time, her focus is on her manifestation to be on the Rio Paralympic Team later this year.

We rarely stop to imagine our lives if we were without a limb, and how loss is truly only perception.

Our own daily expression of gratitude after experiencing seven severe Hit and Run and Traumatic Brain Injuries, fueled our personal passion for the Wheelchair Athlete division of any sport today and we affirm Alicia Ibera will inspire women globally especially from her sincere pure confidence and humbleness that surrounds more than a competitive athletic prose, but reflects her integrity as an inspiration for millions of youth or adults in wheelchairs today. As Alicia rolls past the obstacles set her sites on Rio, it might be a sign that she could be “this generation’s Wilma Rudolph,” as her faith fuels her strength and her dreams.

#1 RUNNER’S MANTRA FOR PEACE LEADS THE WAY GLOBALLY Ukrainian Samunnati Nataliya Lehonkova, achieved her Personal Best Time of 2:30:42 in the 31st Skechers Performance LA Marathon.

We both coincidentally have a a focus in daily meditation and strive for World Peace. Nataliya was born in the Ukraine in 1982, and at the young age of 12, began endurance running. By the age of 18, she was running on Sri Chinmoy’s International Marathon Team and passed the Torch for the World Harmony Run, founded in 1987 by Spiritual Master, Sri Chinmoy. She is honored as the globe’s fastest woman runner in the International Sri Chinmoy Spiritual Centers.

Over many years this World Peace Torch Run expresses global influence for all beings to live a more harmonious and peaceful existence. Like some insidiously evolving financial plague, the world of banking is changing before our very eyes.

Perhaps it is striking your awareness. Perhaps not.

What are negative interest rates?

This means that you pay the bank or the government for holding your money. For example, a government entity issues a bond. Traditionally, the city, state or federal government would pay the investor who bought the bonds an interest rate.

Say, again just for example, 5%. You buy a $50,000 bond and the government pays you $2,500 per year in interest until the bond matures

and they pay you the principal. Or, You buy a CD at your bank that pays you 2%.

But now, in Europe and Japan, the bank or the government is charging you for the privilege of holding your funds. You buy the bond for $50,000.

The government pays you no interest and when the bond matures, they give you $49,500.

The Coming Financial Crisis a Look Behind the Wizard’s Curtain.

When the bubble breaks – see 1 & 2 above – and to me it is not a question of if, but when - bank holidays (temporary bank closures) will ensue.

There will, of course, be other ramifications, but “Bank Holidays” (cute euphemism) are a likely occurrence.

I am not writing this to freak you out. But this situation continues to deteriorate, and one can’t stick one’s head in the sand either.

Here are a few simple steps to take to give yourself some protection and breathing room.

If you bank with one of the big “Money Center,” multi-branch banks (e.g. Bank of America, J.P. Morgan Chase, Citibank, Wells Fargo) I would encourage you to move your banking to a smaller regional or local independent bank or a credit union. The switching may occasion a bit of inconvenience, but these larger banks are pregnant with exposure to the derivatives casino.

Take some Andy Jacksons or Ben Franklins out of the bank and put them in a safe at home. The amount is up to you, but I would suggest that you accumulate a month’s expenses in actual cash.

Remember if banks close, your ATM won’t function and credit card limits could be reduced to the balance due.

Important datum: in a deflationary environment, cash is king.

If you don’t have any precious metals (silver and gold bullion coins) buy some. I recommend 1 oz. silver coins called silver eagles. As a minimum, I would accumulate a month’s expenses in silver eagles (they are currently about $17.50 a piece as I write this – Spring, 2016).

Check locally for a reputable bullion coin dealer.

Meet one of our

NAFE Women on having a small garden party at her home and committed herself to doing make up for these girls as well, on the day of their prom. What started out as a small vision and it up being a community who donated over 100 dresses to the cause. Every day Don came home to find the rack in her front porch filled with dresses from people that just wanted to give back and help Dawn support the vision. It outgrew her house, and in the first year 15 to 20 high school girls participated in the program. The numbers grew in 2014 to about 50 and in 2016 OPG the vision expanded to include military and other ladies with financial hardships in the entire Southern California region. Operation Prom Girl expects well over 100 participants in 2016.

Dawn is a new member of Nafe in California but she has been serving women and young women for years. She is the CEO/Founder of Operation Prom Girl.

Operation Prom Girl was founded in 2013 by Dawn Schultz, who moved to the Inland Valley Empire after spending her life primarily in Los Angeles, CA. It was incorporated in 2015.

Dawn had been a makeup artist for 20 years and as a single mother of three, had help when somebody stepped up to help with the expenses of getting her own daughter to prom. Had this not happened, her daughter would not have attended. Dawn also was not able to go to her own prom, and she knew how important this was for girls.

The first year, Dawn intended to pay forward the prom by attempting to use social media to get the word out there that she was collecting dresses for disadvantaged girls or girls with special circumstances. She was only planning

Dawn says "We now have over 900 dresses and counting, and we collect shoes, dresses, make up, and accessories year-round to support the cause. No girl of any age should ever be without a pretty dress. We support the community year-round by participating in, and supporting different events". ***Operation Prom Girl is run 100% by volunteers and donations. As of yet, we are not financed and are selfsupporting to help make these girls dreams and visions become a reality *** The heart of OPG is to love yourself from the inside out.

Each year OPG holds a one day event focusing primarily on high school girls. This includes a full program with guest speakers as well as several workshops. The girls are treated to a full lunch, raffle prizes, and giveaways, and finally the selection of that special dress and shoes!

Operation Prom Girl then conducts follow-up sessions for the girls to assist them in any of the areas they identified with on form they fill out during the event.

Dawn says “Our vision is to make sure girls understand that they are beautiful and that they need to make a start- A change in their thinking- to loving that reflection that's looking back at them in the mirror”. "Comparing ourselves to the standard that the media throws at us on a daily basis is not reality, and when we start loving ourselves for who we .are and how God sees us, it is the beginning of us being able to do any

thing we set our mind and our goals and our visions to” says Dawn.

Dawn has the pleasure of working side by side with Linda Harris, who is the director of operations Dawn says “ she is the organizer. I am the visionary. I couldn't do it without her and the handful of great volunteers who showed up to this year's event. Both Linda and I come from diverse, and difficult backgrounds and childhood/adolescent lives of blighted circumstances. We both moved to the Inland Valley Empire area of California around the same time from other areas, and by using the social media platform - I was able to share with thousands of people my vision, Linda was able to see that on Facebook, and connect with me and help to make this vision a reality. God definitely has a plan and he is working it through Linda and I! " Dawn goes on to say, "We would also like to give a huge heart of thankfulness and gratitude to Robbie Motter, Nafe Global Coordinator Joan Ring, and NAFE, who in an urgent situation helped us with the cost of a storage unit at Statewide Storage until August - when I did not have funds to accomplish the task. Up to that point, the dresses were all in my house on clothing racks and we were living upstairs! NAFE has been the most loving and supportive group of women networkers I have ever met in my life. And I've been to a lot of networking and community meetings.

These women really gather around you and bring you up from the pit instead of kicking you down into it. It was an absolute blessing to stumble upon NAFE through a friend and NAFE member, Kathy Bundy, and God knows we will continue a relationship into the future!"
