Birthing a Vision is Hard work & Messy Business Eliminate Fearful People Out of Your Inner Circle.

The critical point of success is when it’s time to push. These are the pivotal places in life that change you. It’s at those points we transform from regular Joes to super human, single minded torpedoes.

When the stakes get high enough you WILL dig deep. Adversity creates a resolve that goes past fear. It’s at those times your inner circle must be tight or you must stand alone. You cannot have anyone speaking fear in your camp. Think it yesspeak it never ! That’s why the sub title of this month’s issue states “Eliminate Fearful People Out of Your Inner Circle”. Fear, actually spoken fear will contaminate the resolve of the whole team. It will paralyze the team’s ability and determination to come up answers and solutions.

Fearful people die inside over and over again and recruit members while they do it. You want your inner circle or team to have a few seasoned warriors with war wounds. People that can take the truth, a sober gathering of facts and figure out how to increase the probabilities of success.

People that can say, I’ve done this before and we can do it again. The single most decisive element above and beyond good information and intelligence is the resolve to win. Remember the NASA team that received the message “Houston-we have a problem”? Up to that point things sere fairly routine. At and after that point every team member was ALL IN. Alert, fully cognizant of the crisis but able to think and focus way-way out of the box.

Oh and one more thing– sometimes life sends you air bubbles and if your panicking, your losing seconds of think time. You can’t pay attention to the air bubble opportunities. You must remain calm to think, use the air bubbles to get to the next rock. Climb on THAT rock, catch you breath regroup and come up with the next strategy.

It all started with good intentions, I saw my father pass when I was 14, after many years of suffering from cancer. A man with big dreams that didn't see it come to fruition - a business that never got launched.

We put so much pressure on ourselves, especially if we're a purpose driven entrepreneur. It means the world to you.

If that sounds like you, the best thing you can do for yourself is to go play. You could take up a new hobby, go on vacation or just take the day off. All of these will shift your perspective about your day to day work.

remember distinctly when I lost my edge. I was up 5-0 and lost the set. I got so in my head and started to thinkng thoughts like "I hope my forehand doesn't fail me. I eally need to win this point." I forgot about just playing and freely hitting the ball.

3. Make a Mess

When you bring more play into your business tasks, ou'll implement faster. This is because you won''t have perfectionism stopping you or paralyzing you with fear.

I can't help but laugh at myself because in hindsight, those episodes seem so ridiculous. If things weren't messy then what would I have to tinker with? Nothing.

And that would be NO FUN.

In my previous article we looked in more detail at how to select TVs and game consoles for this year’s ongoing shopping fest. Something key to both was the ability to increase functionality and entertainment by connecting to the internet. In this article, we will look at how we can optimize our home network so that we can take full advantage of our new tech. This will not be a deep dive into Wi-Fi technology itself, simply some background information followed by practical ways to make things better. I will also stay brand-agnostic, and instead provide tips on things to look for.

Waking up every day with our smartphones, we have all become attuned to connectivity without wires.

Gone are the days of long, curly, and winding cords connected to handsets. In fact, an actual telephone hardwired to a wall socket is a rarity these days. So when we think about connecting our home to the internet, it is with a full expectation that no wires should be required. Thankfully, the last few years have presented us with both increased speed and reliability in home Wi-Fi. What we know as consumer-grade Wi-Fi largely started in 1997 with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) 802.11 standards. This initial protocol provided what was then a blazing 2 megabits/second. Two years later, the IEEE released an update we know now as 802.11b that increased Page 32 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

speeds to 11 megabits/second. In the years since, the IEEE has released several generations of protocols such that today’s Wi-Fi standard is 802.11ac with an ambitious 1300 megabits/second (1.3 gigabit/second, or 1.3Gb/s) or higher. To accomplish this, three antennas (each carrying a 433 megabit/ second “data stream”) are used to create the aggregate 1.3Gb/s throughput. However as consumers it is important to be aware that the advertised speeds are only theoretical peak values that assume zero radio signal interference, no thick walls and objects, and perfect signal delivery. In the real world, we have hollow walls with thousands of feet of electrical wires running their length, microwaves working overtime to deliver us our breakfast, and every manner of electrical devices, each creating some type of radio signal noise. On top of that, we have neighbors vying for the same air space.

Once you’ve chosen your Wi-Fi device, picture your home and your rooms, and form an idea of which you would like to spend most of your time. If you have a big home, or multiple floors, you might opt for a more advanced setup involving multiple Wi-Fi devices. When you have selected the ideal room, think about the other things that are in that area. Is a microwave within 25 foot of the location? One of the frequency bands that 802.11ac uses is 2.4Ghz, where microwaves can cause over 60% signal loss.

Start your network with a solid Wi-Fi device that advertises (and conforms to) the IEEE 802.11ac standard. Make sure it is not a “draft” device, but a bona-fide “final” ratified protocol version. You will be able to find this in the fine print and in the specifications of the device. They might also be referred to as “Wave 1” for the draft versions or “Wave 2” for the final versions. There are many brands to choose from, although in truth one brand might use the same innards as another. Thus a more famous name might not net you any gain and will instead cost you more money. Minimize your proximity to the microwave or avoid using the microwave when you expect to do most of your web browsing. Do you have wireless speakers on a particular wall? If so, try an opposite wall. Is there a Christmas tree within 15 feet or any form of blinking lighting? As strange as it may seem, these too can emit signal noise that can degrade your Wi-Fi. How about a fish tank or large mirrors? The water will block the signal and the mirror will reflect some of the signal. Is there a corner where you have a lot power cables plugged in? The electromagnetic signals produced by electricity flowing through the power cords can negatively impact Wi-Fi as well. One final item that can be more than just a nuisance is a wall that uses “chicken wire” as the substrate for plaster.

Once you’ve found the best way to deal with location and environmental issues, there are features of Wi-Fi devices that can help make the most of the available signal. Wireless Multimedia Extensions (WMM) are a way for the device to prioritize the network traffic. The video and audio pieces of network data will get first dibs and a higher percentage of the available bandwidth. Enable this setting during your configuration. Beamforming is a method used to effectively create a beam between the Wi-Fi device and the connecting device. It will no longer be a broad wave (

after signal wave) sweep, but instead more of a focused and direct transmission. Enable this if you have a setting to (en)force beamforming. If your client device does not support this, it will still be able to connect. When it comes time to configure your access point, take advantage of the ability of newer hardware to use both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies by giving both the same service set identifier (SSID) name, password, and authentication method. Finally, enable any options for multiple channel widths such as 40MHz, 80MHz, and 160MHz. After all of the above, you’ve hopefully found a spot that is the best compromise possible. It is reasonable to expect a great connection if you are within site view, or 10 feet, of the Wi-Fi device. As you start to move away, the variables start to play a bigger role such that you may still get a fairly strong and solid signal, but your network transfer speeds may suffer making things like watching YouTube videos stutter or pause to

Successful corporate intrapreneurs under that it’s not enough to have a good idea.

The words entrepreneur and corporation don’t usually show up in the same sentence. One connotes a penchant for creative, seat-ofthe-pants risk-taking, while the other usually suggests “we’ve always done it this way” risk aversion.

But “out-of-the-box” thinking is more necessary than ever in today’s marketplace, as corporations respond to changes in the world economy. Professionals

working within corporations are being increasingly rewarded for using entrepreneurial skills to meet challenges in innovative ways.

Marie, for example, pioneered an integrated system at the corporation she works for that gathers and compiles data from around the company for executives to use in their decision-making. It has evolve d into a necessary part of data

management for the corporation worldwide.

Rich suggested and took on the challenge of merging three products from three previously separate divisions within the multinational corporation where he works. By bringing these products under one umbrella, the organization realized a cost savings of $5 million a year.

Intrinsic in these real-life corporate examples are characteristics normally attributed to “intrapreneurs,” a term defined by the American Heritage Dictionary as, “a person within a large corporation who takes direct responsibility for turning an idea into a profitable finished product through assertive risk-taking and innovation.”

Successful corporate intrapreneurs understand that it’s not enough to have a good idea. They also have to know how to get their ideas sold in the organization.

Professionals with an entrepreneurial bent— intrapreneurs—feel a degree of ownership, take risks, make decisions and take responsibility willingly. Intrapreneurs are visionary and independent.

They thrive on change, but they also know how the changes they want align with their company’s objectives. They have good communications skills, and a high sense of curiosity and self-worth.

Their mindset is more of creating a business than running a business.

Intrapreneurs definitely don’t buy into the “It’s not my job” way of thinking, and they are more concerned with achieving results than gaining influence.

However, sometimes those with innovative ideas have a hard time articulating and selling their ideas because of self-imposed boundaries or limitations. This is usually where coaching comes in and can be of great benefit, to individuals as well as company-wide.

Intrapreneurs benefit from their “find-a-way-to-get-it -done” attitude in the form of praise, promotions and increased job satisfaction. They see how they can make a contribution and bring value—playing in the game, rather than sitting on the sidelines.

For the organization, when individual barriers to performance are removed, retention, productivity and profits go up. Commitment and company loyalty surface; so does innovation and creative problem-solving. An infectious intrapreneurialism begins to take hold, which attracts even more intrapreneurially minded management.

These two aspects alone saved his company millions of dollars.

He saw company profits increase even during the dot-com crisis.

Other industries, such as nursing, use intrapreneurialism as the foundation of transforming nursing leadership amid the healthcare challenges today.

Add to that the stress of deadlines, cutbacks, and communication difficulties, and it’s easy to send the wrong message. The coaching process provides a safe haven to explore and position new ideas. Having the opportunity to evaluate a new idea, understand its impact to the organization and role-play how to best present it for buy-in, is crucial for creating solutions that benefit the corporation and its employees.

Based on a bit of research done by a YouTube channel called “Talking Down the Sun” and a report from the Guardian Publishers we have some dismal facts about women directing major films. Out of 2,000 films surveyed ,women made up 13% of Editors, 10% of Writers and only 5% of directors.

In this article we will discuss some great movies directed by women and a bit of information about the directors themselves.

Breast Cancer Chef Sandra Flores Shares her Story

My name is Sandra Liliana Flores. I am the only child born to two hard working Colombian immigrants. Amparo and Efren who both came to New York City alone in the sixties, to work and find their niche in life. They met by chance one day while my mother was at work and received a package my father was delivering, they married six months later and are still happily married today.

I was born four years later and we lived in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, NYC. For those of you who don't know

what Washington heights is, it is a very rough part of NYC...the ghetto if you will. I grew up there at very dark and dangerous time during the AIDS and crack epidemic, which along with my parents guidance has given me the tough resilient foundation that I possess today.

At age thirteen my parents moved us to Flushing, Queens where I had a culture shock.

Though highly diverse, the area is predominantly Asian and this is where I fell in love with Asian cuisine. The authentic kind...not the take out Fugazi American version.

See some of my fondest memories are rigging my tv antennas with aluminum foil, tape or just plain standing there holding them in place and resting during commercials...and for those of you who've watched PBS there really aren't any!

Before you know it my kids were older and I had been working in restaurants and clubs doing various jobs and had catered for local shops and restaurants. During this time I was an assistant to the owner of a trucking company located in the famous junkyards next to Shea Stadium where Citifield now resides (you should know by now I'm also a Met fan apart from being a die hard Yankee fan all the way!) It was here that I decided to make a huge sacrifice and enroll myself into The French Culinary Institute in SoHo NYC. There I learned from some very talented, dedicated and caring chefs. They taught me there is nothing like Fois Gras, technique, French is the best, timing, if you can cook French you can cook anything, and when in doubt....add butter. I learned that Flan had many fancy pseudo names and respect for the art in a different light. These are values which I carry with me every time I walk into a kitchen....oh yeah and France rules!

Upon graduating in 2008 I opened a small cafĂŠ in the upper Eastside of Manhattan and closed it by 2010 due to hard economic times.

That experience has taught me that I can't do everything myself and an understanding of the business aspect of the food industry. Since then I have gone to working in trendy mixed menu Asian restaurants even proficiently working the wok and tandoor. I love learning new food and techniques and will continue to challenge myself.

In 2013 was a sous chef on tour with Top Chef Allstars and opened a lot of restaurants throughout NYC that still have the same concept and menu I developed.

In 2014 I dominated the airwaves of season 12 on Hells Kitchen with Chef Gordon Ramsey. Right up until the finale!

Upon my return home from wrapping up filming the show two months later, I was not feeling right...was not myself. I was running about six miles a day and in the top condition of my life, but had severe fatigue. I felt as if all my energy was being sucked away to some unknown place and wouldn't stop. Upon my insistence to doctors that something was wrong with me, my life came to a screeching halt. The volume got turned way down and the lights got turned off... I got diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. I felt like my life was over and I could die.

Two months later I had a double mastectomy, the nine centimeter tumor that plagued me and thirty of my lymph nodes removed. I've suffered chemotherapy from hell. My good doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering have brought me to the edge of death trying to kill my cancer with treatment, to the point where I lacked the strength to walk. I endured 25 rounds of radiation and lost another one of my trademarks, besides my Double D's!... I also lost my pride and joy, my long golden hair, but not my will to live. Luckily I got to

A Call to Modernized , Improve Transparenc Socially Sensitize Today’s Law Enforcement New Term for an Alarming Trend “Contempt of Cop”

Over and over we are hearing complaints from the motoring public of instances when an errant police, seemingly drunk with power decides to exert his authority just because. As in the recent case of Hialeah Police Officer Harold Garzon who initiated a traffic stop for “loud music” upon hearing N.W.A. ‘s “Fuck Tha Police” coming from a car stopped at a red light. Turns out, 26 yr old, double Harvard graduate, Cesar Baldelomar knew a thing or two – about a thing or two. Really? You’re really playing that song? Pull Over” Garzon ordered.

Baldelomar wasted little time informing Officer Garzon that he was well aware that the Supreme Court had struck down any law banning loud music in 2012. Garzon was not impressed.

Three traffic citations later: one for insurance, a seatbelt violation and having an out-of-state plate, Officer Garzon had shown Baldelomar who was in charge.

As a twenty year veteran sergeant of the Los Angeles Police Department I recognize that Cesar Baldelomar had unwittingly just entered “Contempt of Cop” zone. Apparently, Officer Garzon became angry when he felt his authority had been challenged. Haven't we seem examples of this before: Mike Brown in Ferguson, Eric Garner in Staten Island, and Ezell Ford in Los Angeles?

What about that loud music violation? Isn’t that the probable cause (PC) for the detention. Wasn’t that what first drew Officer Garzon’s attention?

A police officer finds you guilty of offending his sensibilities; you get smart; and then you pay. “Pay” can mean a traffic ticket, a trip to the hospital after a use of force incident, three-hots and-a-cot after being booked for assault on a police officer or death.

It’s time to put an end to department supervisors, police associations and chiefs of police who circle the wagons, when officers engage in behavior that ends in an unlawful detention, illegal arrest or deadly force. Police Offices who demonstrate a lack of judgment, abuse their authority, manufacture probable cause and outright lie, should not be given the “gift of resignation”. Police Officers who have demonstrated that they are ill-equipped should be fired and banned from seeking employment with any other police agency for life.

The Redundant New Year Resolution…Solved!

I was at a New Year’s Eve party at a friend’s home last year and of course there is always a great deal of joy and merriment to be had by all.

While engaging in some playful bantering with some close friends, I noticed that a middle aged woman very smartly dressed was sitting and sipping a glass of Chablis.

What I am noticing while writing this article is that, perhaps, the theme should be not Holiday Resolutions but Holiday Procrastinations! Seared Day Boat Sea Scallops, Fall Asparagus Salad With Romesco Sauce By chef Ron Dupre Seared Day Boat Sea Scallops Ingredients  servings

lbs medium Day Boat Scal-

lops  2 tsp Spanish extra virgin olive oil  fresh ground black pepper  fine ground sea salt

Procedure: Clean scallops by removing connective muscle if necessary. Pat scallops dry and season with salt and pepper.Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a 12 inch nonstick skillet over moderately high heat until hot but not smoking, then sear half the scallops about 12, turning once, until golden brown and just cooked through about 4 minutes total. Transfer to a plate as cooked and keep warm. Sear remaining scallops in same manner, wiping out skillet and adding 1teaspoon of oil.

 Roasted Asparagus Salad with Serrano Ham  2 bunches of trimmed medium asparagus  1/4 of a small Peeled Red onion  1oz of Serrano ham  two hard boiled eggs  fine ground sea salt to taste  fresh ground black pepper to taste

Procedure: Preheat oven to 450f, spread asparagus on baking sheet. Roast asparagus until crisp and tender turning occasionally, about 10 minutes. Transfer asparagus to platter to cool. Once cool, cut asparagus on a 1/4 inch thick bias.Thin Julienne the red onion and Serrano ham. toes, or 1 large tomato large roasted red peppers, well-drained  1 cup extra virgin olive oil  1/2 cup sherry vinegar (approximately)  1/4 tsp red pepper flakes 2

Procedure: Roast garlic by first rubbing off excess dry skin from garlic head.

Then place on baking sheet and drizzle a bit of olive oil on top. Roast in oven for 20 min at 300f or until garlic on inside is roasted and soft. Place almonds and hazelnuts into food processor and process until finely ground. Pour a few tablespoons of virgin olive oil into a frying pan and quickly fry bread on both sidesare browned. Remove from pan and allow to cool.Cut cored tomatoes in half and toss sprinkle with some olive oil and salt. Roast tomatoes for at 375f for 30 min or until well caramelized.Once bread is is cooled tear into 6 pieces and process with nuts. Add tomatoes and continue to process. Squeeze roasted garlic from the skins into the processor. Add roasted red peppers and continue to process until a thick puree. While processor is running, slowly drizzle in the oil and vinegar. Add salt to taste.

Gianduja Tart with Chocolate-Cookie Crust Procedure: 1. In a small bowl, sprinkle the gelatin over 1 tablespoon of water; let stand until the gelatin is softened, 5 minutes. In a medium saucepan, bring the cream and 6 tablespoons of the sugar to a simmer; remove from the heat. Stir in the gelatin until dissolved. Add the gianduja and salt to the hot cream and let stand until melted, about 3 minutes; whisk until smooth.

Scrape the mixture into a glass bowl, press a sheet of plastic wrap directly onto the surface, and let stand until cooled, about 1 hour.

Ingredients        

1 3/4 teaspoons unflavored powdered gelatin 3 cups heavy cream 7 tablespoons sugar 1/2 pound gianduja chocolate, chopped (see Note) Pinch of salt 8 ounces chocolate wafer cookies, broken into pieces 1 stick unsalted butter, melted 3/4 cup blanched whole hazelnuts

2. Meanwhile, spray an 8-inch springform pan with nonstick cooking spray. In a food processor, pulse the cookies until fine; transfer to a bowl. Add the melted butter and the remaining tablespoon of sugar and stir until coated. Press the crumbs over the bottom of the springform pan and refrigerate the crust until firm, about 30 minutes.

3. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Spread the hazelnuts on a baking sheet and toast for 12 minutes, until fragrant. Let cool.

4. Pour the gianduja filling over the crust and scatter the toasted hazelnuts over the surface (they will sink and then float to the surface). Refrigerate the tart uncovered until firm, about 6 hours.

5. Run a small hot knife around the edge of the tart.

How to Handle That Hanover!

When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day.” ~ Frank Sinatra as quoted in The Hangover Survival Guide Certainly there is nothing that will make you appreciate health more than a nasty hangover and chances are if you drink you’ve experienced one. So if one of your New Year’s resolutions is to be hangover free in 2015, then read carefully. By following these strategies and tips you can celebrate without paying for it later.

The first and most important thing to do is celebrate responsibly and if you need to drive don’t drink or secure a designated driver. The consequences of ignoring this advice will be far more painful than any hangover.

Next drink lots of water throughout the evening. One of the major causes of morning-after headaches is dehydration. Alcohol in any

form dehydrates so to avoid this fate, drink at least as much water as wine (or other alcoholic beverage) during the evening and then drink an extra big glass of water before bed.

Another important strategy is to slow down. Not only will you enjoy the wine more, but your kidney can only handle 3-4 oz. per hour. So sip, don’t gulp, and pace yourself. Along the way make sure to eat.

Eating while drinking can slow down the absorption of alcohol. Milk can also help line the stomach.

All drinks are not created equal with regard to their hangover causing potential.

Congeners, like tannins from red grape skins, are natural by-products of alcohol fermentation. The higher the congener content in your drink, the greater the hangover you can expect. Clearer liquors like gin and vodka have the fewest congeners, whereas darker liquors like bourbon and red wine have the most. Red wines also contain a higher concentration of histamines than whites so if they give you a headache, try an antihistamine or switch to white. Some people are sensitive to the tannins found in red wines, chocolate and tea which can cause migraines. Tannins can also intensify the dehydrating effects of wine.

or Sparkling wine as well as mixed drinks with sodas and tonics will hit your bloodstream faster than their bubble free counterparts. The carbonation is thought to create pressure in your stomach pushing the alcohol into your system faster than drinks without bubbles. So save the Champagne for a late night toast and choose drinks that are not mixed with carbonated beverages. While beer is a carbonated beverage it is usually much lower in alcohol than wine or spirits so it will not be as much as a problem.

Many people who wake up with a wine headache will blame sulfites which are usually not the culprit.

Sulfites have been used safely to preserve wine throughout history. People who are sensitive to sulfites will have trouble breathing, which is a much bigger problem than a headache! If you know you are allergic to sulfites, try organic wines that are lower in sulfites. Sulfites naturally occur in wine, so it is impossible to find a wine that will have no sulfites.

Ladies unfortunately we have to pay more attention to all of this than the men in our lives. Women process alcohol slower than men due to their higher percentage of body fat, lower body weight and lower levels of the stomach enzyme dehydrogenase, which works to break down alcohol. So keeping pace with the guys may give you bragging rights but it will definitely make you more intoxicated—and more prone to a hangover. So let the guys win that battle and when you wake up feeling fabulous you’ll win in the end.

The Doctor’s Corner A Partnership between UC Riverside Medical School and Riverside Women’s Club.

The Riverside Woman’s Club has been a longtime fixture, and pulse of Riverside, California for over 117 years. Health education is one of the core projects of the Riverside Woman’s Club, who has worked with a number of organizations and agencies over the years to promote these efforts. Sarah Maloy is considered the first female physician in Riverside, and with Mrs. Martha E. Hewitt founded the Riverside Woman's Club in January 7, 1896.

The first meeting was held a Dr. Maloy’s office on Main Street, in walking distance from our current club location on 4092 Main Street in Riverside, California.The original purpose and objective of the club "was to aid educational, social, and material improvement of the community. That said, in the spirit of Dr Maloy the Riverside Woman’s Club has come full circle, and is committed to continuing the legacy of community service, and addressing pressing national health care issues, assuring the well being of citizens in their community. The Doctor's corner's (per Riverside club President Alison Eccleson) has been a great collaboration and as brought UCR’s Medical School and the Riverside Woman’s Club together, with core missions that build upon one another, and meeting the needs of the community .

The Doctor's Corner was established in 10/2013 by co chairs Dr. Desiree K. Reedus MD,MS,FACC, and Reatha Reedus MFA of the Riverside Woman's Club. A partnership was created with the UCR Medical School under the Leader ship of Dr. Emma Simmons UCR Associate Dean of Student Affairs have medical students work with the community and provide community based education, while at the same time broadening their educational experience by learning how to be doctors through potential patient interaction.

The Riverside Woman’s Club and the University of California Riverside (UCR) Medical School have entered into a unique partnership to help medical students develop their communication skills when dealing with their patients and educate the public on important health issues.

The program, featured in a recent article in the Press Enterprise Newspaper, helps to better prepare medical students by addressing skills physicians are required to possess when treating patients by giving students a chance to discern common concerns among patients in order to better develop a positive bedside manner. By reaching out and mentoring undergraduate students, the medical school students further nurtures and perpetuates the educational process, while at the same time fulfilling the healthcare needs of our community. “By fostering a relationship with undergraduate students (many from UCR), and exposing them to the fantastic educational resources that UCR medical school provides, many students will select to train here in Riverside County, “ says Dr. Desiree K. Reedus. Then subsequently in turn, after medical school graduation, many of these same students will select these to embark on their medical careers in Riverside County, providing this community with much needed medical services. The latter is very essential in meeting the health care needs since Riverside County is considered a physician shortage area. Currently there are not enough doctors to serve the needs of the citizens in this community.

3) May 13, 2014 dealt with issues involving Gerontology osteporosis, nutrition, safety (including fall and fracture precautions, and with daily living) bone preservation and physical fitness. Maryin Altamirano was the medical school student lecturer at this event.

4) 8/5/2014: National Night Out, Medical school student Leila Magistrado had booth and provided lecturer pertinent to adult and childhood vaccination. Making vaccinations available is one of the core projects of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs through their partnership with Shot@Life. General club meeting for the Riverside Woman’s club are held the second Tuesday of every month.

5) November 1, 2014: The 2014-2015 Doctor's Corner Kick off took place on November 1st 2014 and was held at the Riverside Woman's Club in Riverside California. The program started off Doctor's Corner co-chair Dr. Desiree K. Reedus making a brief introduction which was immediately followed by a audience welcome by Riverside Woman's Club President Alison Eccleson.

President Eccleson recognized all guests including De Anza district president Jeannette S, De Anza District Dean, Second vice president Pat Farmer, and recent past California and Western Region Jeannie Award winner Linda Hicks. Margaret Van Hove then presented information about Riverside Woman's Club history and origin (established in 1896). Terri Lippert Riverside Woman's Club Dean, then reviewed all of the current projects and mission of the Riverside Woman's Club. Dr Reedus then spoke about the Doctor's Corner and her experience since initiation in 10/2013. Students Leila.Magistrado and Maryin Altamirano last year's doctor's corner student participants then each spoke about their experience with the Doctor's corner and how worthwhile the program had been and how warm and encouraging the Riverside Club women had been to them, and in so doing contributing in a positive matter to their educational experience. Dr. Reedus then introduced Dean Emma Simmons, MD, MPH Associate Dean Student Affairs UCR School of Medicine, who introduced the students that will be participating in the Doctor's Corner for the 2014-2015 school year Katherine Tsai, Jennifer Simpson and Mayra Hernandez. Reatha Reedus Co-Chair of the Doctor's Corner then separately introduced representatives from California State senators Mike Morrell's office and Richard Roth, who presented recognitions to the Riverside Woman's Club for 117 year of continuous non profit community service. Recognitions were also given to Dr. Simmons for UCR and and its participation with the Doctor's Corner, and its commitment to provide community education and for its concern about the health and welfare of the community. After the recognitions, Dr. Reedus then concluded the program with thank you's, and ended the program with an inspirational poem by Lebo Mashile

Doctor's Corner Outcome: The students have been very well received, already conducting themselves in such a professional and effective matter, while at the same time demonstrating patience, and consideration. Despite their demanding medical school studies, they have taken the torch so to speak and ran with it, providing community medical based education. The club has benefitted from receiving education, and both have benefitted from the support and relationship with one another. The students have expressed great gratitude and appreciation from the support and encouragement that they have received from the club.

Don't get your hopes up. In the latest years, we have realized that no one is immune. Sooner or later the storm could fall upon you. When that moment comes, you must be prepared.

Train for Crisis and Ch Unfortunately, being used to solving everyday business problems doesn't give someone the ability to solve all problems whatsoever. Crises have nothing to do with common issues encountered during business routine. I have witnessed senior executives of large corporations fall to panic attacks and be completely overwhelmed, all their certainties collapsed in a moment.

The type of crises that I am going to help you deal with is that of a sudden and brutal event, either a natural one or created by human hand. In both cases, it can be devastating if you are caught unprepared. Definitely, we're talking about a crisis that can jeopardize your company's future. The biggest mistake, that an executive could make in these critical moments, is to project a sense of insecurity. That can happen when you realize that the options ahead of you are not the ones that will resolve the situation easily.

Is a Picture Worth a Thousand Words?

“Television and movies are full of immediate scenes, visible to the eye, ready to be experienced first hand. This has influenced stories and novels more than we realize.

Twentieth-century audiences now insist on seeing what they are reading.”

That quote is from the great writer, editor and publisher, Sol Stein, and is taken from his must-read book for writers, Stein on Writing.

He wrote the book for writers of both fiction and non-fiction.

Here’s a paragraph from my detective thriller, Mind Games, (which was recently optioned for a motion picture – can I get an “Amen!”)

The intersection of Bancroft and Telegraph is next to the South Gate of the UC Berkeley campus and, green light in their favor, was awash with students hustling to their next class or cappuccino. As I sat at the red light, a bare-bellied Asian co-ed being towed by a Harlequin Great Dane walked in front of my car talking on a cell phone. She was wearing hip-hugger jeans that apparently stayed aloft by being Velcroed to her pubic bone, but turned not one male head in the crosswalk, which made me feel like a dirty old man.

Nothing the matter with those 140-character thought molecules but readers want information that they can use. And that can take several well-chosen words.

Did you know that the average content length for a page that ranks in a top 10 position is 2,000 words? Or that if a post is greater than 1,500 words, it receives 68.1% more tweets and 22.6% more Facebook likes?

So tell your story, and tell it visually, and tell it well.

What works for fiction can also work for non-fiction, including marketing text.

Here is a paragraph from an article on positioning bottled water brands.

With evocative retro graphics, the Liquid Salvation label sports either a sexy she devil or a Betty-Grable-like seductress with one of the flasks strapped to her upper thigh behind a red garter. “Pure Water for an impure world.” http:// www.ontargetresearch.com/2013/03/18/ water-wars/ The point is that writing should be as visible as possible. This applies to marketing and press copy as well. And it does not have to be in the micro-sized Internet bites called tweets.

But don’t forget that visuals rule: articles with images get 94% more views; using videos on landing pages can increase conversions by 86%; videos get 267% more links than normal posts; and 20% of people will read text while 80% of people will watch a video with the same exact content.

Whether text, image or video, the message that gets delivered should be based on surveys of your target market. Having found out what your public needs and wants, you can craft your message to parallel that demand.

M&M’s,Business and Life

When I talk about leadership, corporate culture, management style, and diversity I can’t help but think about M&M candies.

Everyone loves these brown, yellow, red, green, orange, and blue crunchy chocolate pods. So many people tell me they have a favorite color, and some claim that each one tastes different. Well, if I were an M&M I would be yellow because those are my favorite – and I think they do taste different. But despite that I still enjoy each one!

What is your favorite color? Do you think it tastes better than the other colors?

Many do not know the story behind M&Ms, it’s fascinating and inspiring. Do you know what the letters M&M stand for? The first “M” is for candy maker Forrest Mars, Sr., who invented the recipe after witnessing soldiers from the Spanish Civil War "eating little round pieces of chocolate encased in a hard sugary coating." He received a patent for his manufacturing process in 1941 and took his concoction to Bruce Murrie at the Hershey Corporation.

That’s where the other “M” comes from. As partners, these savvy businessmen made a deal to provide chocolate to the troops during World War II - even though chocolate was rationed for the public. They were packaged in small, cylindrical cardboard tubes we wouldn’t recognize today.

By 1948 the packaging changed to the brown plastic pouch we know and love today, but the candies then were violet, red, yellow, brown, and green. Eventually violet was replaced with tan, and tan was replaced with blue. The imprinted letter “M” was once black and now it’s white. We also have more colors, flavors and sizes too: Peanut Butter, Almond, Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Dark Chocolate peanut, coconut, Wildly Cherry, Mint Crisp, pretzel, minis, baking bits, and customized colored and flavored M&Ms with seasonal colors added for holidays.

M&M candies represent a great story about the power of a small family company with only one product of one color and flavor is now the Mars Corporation, one of the largest food manufacturers in the world. They had a global vision that responded to a growing and changing market. beliefs. They faced many new challenges, but never forgot the importance of corporate culture. The fundamental part of the corporate culture of Mars is based on business principles handed down from generations before, and the knowledge and wisdom clarified priorities and working practices for the company. It helped Mars behave correctly in the some very complex situations.

In 1983 Mars corporation released the Five Principles, a success model based on Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency, and Freedom. The principles bridge the Mars family traditions to their future. The evolution of Mars corporation has reflected growth and learning, a new understanding of knowledge and human capital, and the increasing importance of corporate responsibility to the global environment. Mars emphasizes the need for employees to find the balance of work within life – balance that is most appropriate to the diverse community in which they are a part.

The Five Principles are demanding, and they run deeply throughout the company. It has guided them since its beginning, and te Mars firmly believes they have helped the company come this far and will take them well into the future. In an era when almost every corporation has its statement of values, I find Mars Five Principles a great reminder of good judgement.

The emphasis is on behaviors for success in the modern world - embracing greater diversity, giving employees greater freedom to act and focus more on the quality of life of all.

The first principle is that the consumer is their boss, so Mars tirelessly seeks to understand their needs and build lifelong relationships through products and brands that bring joy to changing cultures and lifestyles. company recognized that change is constant, and in business that means you have to evolve.

Secondly, quality is Mars uncompromising standard toward excellent products, and delivering them with minimum impact on the environment.

I am very impressed by the third principle Mars adopted, which is a demand for total responsibility from every level of management. All associates are asked to take direct responsibility for results, to exercise initiative and judgment, and to make decisions as required. By recruiting ethical people well suited to their jobs and trusting them, they are accountable to their own high standards.

Teamwork drives their common goals, and although divisions are fully responsible for achieving its own mission, they are interdependent and ready to respond to others. Active communication powers company objectives, plans, activities and needs, and active communication also resolves differences equitably.

Private ownership gives Mars the freedom to take a long-term perspective on making investments, building businesses and providing for the well-being of their employees. This spirit has driven Mars in the past, and I believe it make it the guiding force for their future.

So that’s the complex story of a simple candy that has changed the world. I find it fascinating, and a real lesson about American business, leadership, corporate culture, management style, and diversity.

For an international corporation to take ethics seriously, to respect and value its workers, to have an environmental commitment as well as high food standards – well, that is pretty impressive to me.

Next time you eat an M&M you’ll remember this Mars story – its’ a good one… just about as good as the little yellow M&Ms I’m chewing right now!

Life is Not Always Easy But I Believe, We Are in Charge of Our Destiny!

I was on my own at age 15 and lied about my age so I could get a job and each job I took I would go in early to learn all I could so that the next job would be better and better. That first job was in San Francisco. I eventually went back to Hawaii, and at age 21 was working at the Hawaiian Village Hotel as their first Director of Personnel. It was called Personnel back in the those days. I learned from many masters in those days, one of them was the great Henry J.

In Hawaii I married and moved to the states, but after 10 years of marriage I found myself divorced and the single mom of two children 8 and 4. I was still working and still learning Kaiser who owned the Hotel.

and each new job brought me more knowledge and more responsibility. During those times I was living in Bellevue, Nebraska and working in Omaha and then in Virginia where I worked in Washington, DC. I stayed single for awhile and then met my second husband; we lived in the Virginia area and then moved to Houston, where we separated. While in Houston working for a wonderful company which later was liquidated by the State of New York I found myself with a job offer to join the State of New York Liquidation Bureau in New York City, and took the opportunity and my children and I by then I had another daughter who was 4 when my husband and I separated and we moved to New Jersey. years to do my job as the Director of Administrative Service for the State Insurance department, Liquidation Bureau a job I held for five years before moving to Washington, DC and taking a bigger job with an even larger staff. During my second marriage I helped my husband also build a thriving business, and during our marriage we had all the finer things that money could buy, but he was a womanizer so I felt that I did not want to compromise my values or my family values, so I left. I also felt that he would honor his commitments to us to support the children and I when the no fault divorce was granted, but he did not and there I was again with just what money I could earn to support myself and my three children. But I believe that what the mind perceives it can achieve.

Life as a single mom was not easy and many times during those times I had to work three jobs to support my family. I also learned then that there was no such thing as women helping women as mentors and I vowed then that what ever I learned I would spend the rest of my life sharing with other women, and I have been able to stick to that promise for over 25 years now and I will continue that mission until I take my last breath.

Needless to say she was not happy about that, but we did that and moved to Northern CA where I continued to do my marketing consulting and added public relations to the work I was doing. Also found time to be part of the Optimist Organization and became a distinguished Lt Governor for the organization.

In New Jersey I helped to start a battered wives shelter known as the Greystone manor as back in the 70’s there were very few safe houses.

In 1985 I decided I just did not want to work for the Government anymore as my job was too stressful and I was going home with pains in my chest and stressed out and I knew if I continued that I would probably be dead and what good would that be for my children if I was dead. At that time I was receiving NO support money from either ex-husband so it was totally up to me.

In my career over the years I had learned a lot and had moved up to Executive level. In those positions I was always selling new ideas and strategies so felt that perhaps I could take my marketing skills to help other small businesses. So I left the government, I remember even in the beginning my children were not that supportive as they were use to me going to work everyday and several times said to me “Mom get a regular job”. But I never gave up and the clients came and we were able to live even better than we had lived in the past. During that time my mother who I really had never lived much with became ill as she had a major stroke and I felt it was important to come and be near her. At that time my youngest daughter was ready to start High School in VA in the fall and we packed up Page 106 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

In about two years my mother and step father moved to Southern CA, but I promised my daughter we would stay until she graduated and started college and I did that. Then I moved to Southern CA to be nearer to my mother who was in a wheelchair and who continued to have slight

My children never could understand why I would give up everything to be near and help to care for my mother since she really had never been a mother to me, but I told them she is still my mother and I was her only child and that if I did not honor her as my mother I would be no different than her who never honored me as her daughter. I do believe though strokes

as she went through the sickness that we did form a small bond and I never regretted being there for her, so when she died I was at peace knowing that I had been the best daughter that I could possibly be, even though she had not been the best mother..

One thing that sort of hurt me was that a few years ago my father gave me all the photo albums, there were about 8 of them and they dated back to 1936 the year I was born and there was not one photo of me in any of the albums so I have no photos of me as a child, it was as if my childhood never existed.

I am blessed as a Single MOM I was there for my children first and they all have done great and are very successful in their own worlds. I am a grandmother to four and I have three children that I am totally proud of, who each day makes me even prouder. I remember the day my youngest daughter called me and said “Mother I just was nominated President of the Company. YOU always told me I could be President”. This company is a very large LA Company and she was selected by the Executive Team all men to head the company, I was so proud as I am when the others call me and share their accomplishments as well.

Being a single mom for any of us is not an easy task and my ex husbands never took time to have the children spend time with them, so it was me all the time during their years of growing up that had to be there for them. A task I loved and will always cherish.

Life is about SHOWING UP as to me SHOWING Up is like a treasure map, you never know what Treasure you will find, and I certainly have been blessed with so many treasures in my life. I have met and still communicate with people I met over 50 years ago and I love hearing about their lives and their families and many have told me that knowing me changed their lives, that is a greater gift to me than all the monies in the world. There was a point in my life about 25 years ago that I was about Power, Position and Money and I worked very hard and was earning great money which also helped my children have all that I could give them. But one day I was driving home on a road after doing some research at a library for a talk I was going to give and a Drunk Driver was coming right at my car door, and I remember grabbing the wheel and saying to myself “I

can’t die today I

have not had time for Fun in my life”. It was like a miracle as instead of hitting my car door he hit my bumper and spun the car around 7 times and I was able to get out E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive Page 107

of the car and then I was worried about him, but he was so drunk that he was totally okay, the next day I could not move and for over a year it was difficult to walk but again we are in charge of our destiny and I knew I had lots of work to still do and so many people to help that it was not about me and I had to get better and I did. I did not know until last year that my birthday March 8, always fell on International Women’s Day, but now I know why I always felt like I was an International Woman., this year on March 8 I will be 79 years old.

Over the years I have received many many awards like Office Depot’s Business Women of the Year, SBA’s Business Women’s Advocate, YWCA Women of Distinction, Rotary Club of Menifee “Service Above Self” award, plus many awards from Senators, assembly individuals, the President of the United States Call To Service Award and so many more.

Life is not about wining awards but it is nice to be recognized for the work one does that touches lives and makes a difference.
