Welcome to the June issue of E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive. This month’s theme is MADWOMEN, women that used their marketing genius to build empires. This week marks the end of two television programming landmarks—Madmen and David Letterman.

A few days ago MADMEN had it’s final episode and just tonight as I’m writing this, America is saying goodbye to David Letterman. Both shows were packed with nostalgia. With MADMEN, it was recreated, depicting the advertising world back in the 1960’s. While with David Letterman it ran in real time for over 30 years.

And based on the memory jolts presented throughout the MADMEN series, we were constantly reminded of how women were openly disrespected, undervalued and overlooked. So any success women experience from then to now came with a high price, very little support, even from other women.

This made naming this month’s theme MADWOMEN an obvious give away. These women faced and succeeded in a male dominated industry. In all cases they more than survived-they thieved.

We should all take notes and understand, the path of least resistance is not the path to your dreams. And to be labeled MADWOMEN because you stand up to gender bashing, racism, industry politics and countless forms of haters, is a good thing.

As you pursue your dreams and babysit your business, just know that some of your opportunities exist because someone blazed the trail ahead of you.

Welcome to the Franchise Forum. I think that May has come here way too quickly!

But be that as it may (sorry for the play on words), it is here. Now, of course there are numerous catch phrases that highlight May. Some of the more familiar adages are: “Make Hay while the sun shines.” Or, “Reap what you sow”.

How about, “April showers bring May flowers.”

If you notice that they all seem to be centering on the fact that somehow something you do now, could facilitate something better to happen in the future. That has a certain element in it that all franchises have because they are set up to help you with the beginning segment of building a business so that you and your family, down the road, will enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Follow The Rules? Or Make Your Own! I was enjoying breakfast at a hotel in Philadelphia last week while waiting for the hotel shuttle to arrive to whisk me off to the airport. As always I like to keep my ears perked to hear pertinent conversations about anybody who may be unhappy with their present job or career path.

I overheard two businesswomen talking about the benefits they were collecting from their current company. As I listened more attentively I realized that what actually had been transpiring was a high level employment interview. Evidentially there was a job fair taking place and I was smack dab in the middle of it! I listened to what the employer’s representative was saying about her company. It was quite impressive. Some of the incentives were, high starting salary, after 5 years there is a 2 week paid vacation , health benefits, 401k, maternity leave, etc.

As I listened, I realized that every one of the benefits were simply carrots laid out in front of the perspective employee designed to lock them into a lifetime of loyalty. In essence, there were rules that were laid out and if they are followed there would be a reward. However, if you own a franchise, for the most part, you make the rules by which you reap the benefits! successfully proven concept that is completely different but is exactly the same? And the "same" part of that statement has a long track record of being very, very successful. Now, what do I mean by that last statement? Sounds like jibber- ish or an oxymoron.

Well, this is my thought process. Some of the most successful businesses have been born out of similar concepts and business products or services that are well known or seemed to be played out to tears.

However, those businesses have still enjoyed a history of working very well because they contained a definite twist that earns it the right to be considered unique and different.

Here is an example What could be more annoying than a mouse in your home? Well, over 100 years ago, the mouse trap was the answer. I would venture a guess that over one billion have been sold over the years. I would deem that a successful product and the business of producing them is, like wise, a killer business. Actually, killer is the operative word here! In today's age, we are now a society that is always thinking green and being more humane to animals. So, naturally there is now on the market the "humane" mouse trap; One which catches the animal and then allows the “humane” release into the wild.

Now, I don’t know how many humane traps have been sold but here is the response I received from Google: (About 7,680,000 results 0.58 seconds). I guess that would indicate that quite a few have been Sold!

Everyone has the ability to think creatively, problem solve, and generate more ideas. It requires practice, the same way you need to train your body for the marathon. All too often, we let our brain go on auto-pilot through repetitive routines and rigid thinking, and fail to nourish our curiosity. Don’t rush through your day, but rather indulge in play, wonder, and joy. Notice what is happening right outside your window, and do so with the eyes of a six-yearold. Ask questions. Be surprised. By assuming a new perspective, you open yourself to discovery, learning, and your creative potential.

There are five easy steps you can do today to boost your creativity and discover the creative edge.

Here are five ways to make your workplace more creative and fun.

1) Invest in imagination. Allocate time to day dream and play with possibilities. At Google employees are given one day a week to work on a project of their choice that doesn’t fall within their formal job description. Google reports that they get many ideas that can be applied to the rest of their organizations’ core work. One of my favorite ways to tap into your imagination is to take an image and tell a story. Pick an image from a magazine and write a story. When you look at the image what do you see, feel, free associate without judgment and write a list of all the words that come to mind. Begin writing once upon a time and use every word on your list as if it were an old fashioned Madlibs.

2) Have recess. Do you remember the energy and excitement as everyone headed for recess? Children running all over the place; whispering, shouting, and laughing.

Children laugh an average of 400 times a day and that number drops to only 15 times a day by the time people reach age 35. Laughter releases endorphins which make you feel good. Laughing increases oxygen intake, thereby replenishing and invigorating cells. It also increases the pain threshold, boosts immunity, and relieves stress. When you are less stressed you are more creative. Have game day at work, dress up as your favorite superhero or crank up the music and dance and watch how the creativity begins to flow.

3) Cultivate curiosity.

Regardless of where or how we work, the best creative minds are the most curious. One of my favorite movies growing up was Auntie Mame.

Mame implores her young nephew Patrick to avoid dullness by “soaking up life, down to your toes. Eat an ice cream sundae for breakfast. Take a different route to work. Try a new restaurant.

Take class. Ask what if questions. Create a vision board on Pinterest. Pretend you are a tourist in your town. Share your knowledge or passion with your colleagues.

4) Do your brainstorming offsite.

Offsite meetings can be a great way for companies to take employees out of the office to brainstorm new business ideas, discuss company-wide issues and problems and teach employees new skills. Go to the amusement park and take a ride on the roller coaster or get in a hot air balloon. Go to a museum and see things from a new perspective. Walk and talk in the park.

5) Design an inspiring and flexible work space. Google again had been a leader in this arena. Employees glide around the building on razor scooters and climb ladders between floors. They design their own workspace with treadmills and tinker toys while writing on walls. You can start small and rearrange the furniture. Hang art work on the walls or cover them with black board paint. Bring in fun things such as Nerf balls, a basketball and hoop, or party blowers.

One of my favorite places to go for meetings is

building that dates to the 1880's in the old meatpacking district, there are 6 rooms all furnished with vintage furniture, ethnic artwork, toys, books, magazines, colorful walls and filled with natural light.

However, contrary to psychopaths, sociopaths or common liars, they are not imposters in the most negative meaning of the word, but rather people with unusual skills that contribute to the defense of the country by sacrificing their own freedom and often their lives.

Two individuals can have the exact same response to the exact same question, and still if for one of them that is habitual behavior that is a signal of sincerity, while if that reaction is a deviation from the norm, that's clue that “may” indicate deception.

This is incorrect. Usually, during a conversation, eye contact is kept for 2/3rds of the duration, but this ratio may decrease for several factors. For example, cultural differences play an important role, but there may also be the simple lack of interest in the conversation or in the person who speaks, or you may be talking to an introverted individual. Ignoring these factors could falsely induce to believe that the other person is being deceptive.

So relying on eye contact as a universal signal of deception is an error, and it is far more effective to assess how eye contact patterns vary in a specific individual. For example, if someone significantly increases or decreases eye contact at once, that means that likely stress has perturbed a state of relaxation and something has to have caused this transformation. If you notice that a response causes a reaction that deviates from the norm, try changing the subject and maybe bringing it up again later, to observe if the same reaction recurs. Do not rely on a single signal, you need confirmation from multiple clues to reveal the emotional state of a person.

On the Blink When subject to great stress many people often increase their blinking frequency, but this behavior must not be immediately associated with deception.

Indeed, in many cases the opposite phenomenon can be observed, that is, when a person is lying they reduce their blinking almost to zero. This happens because the cognitive effort to repeat a scripted story maybe several times can be so great as to reduce any movement of the body, including the eyelids.

Suspicions can arise even when the information provided about a topic is abundant, but has little correlation with the argument itself. When asking anyone about a fact they were involved with, always pay attention to the amount of information they relate. Responding to a specific question with answers like “ I don't remember” or “I think”, “I believe”, “from what I can remember” denotes uncertainty. Obviously no one can remember every detail exactly, but if the question has critical importance to reconstruct an event then it is legitimate to expect a direct answer.

The Sound of the Truth An occasional liar who's not sold on the lie they are telling will hint at that with the tone of their voice. In fact, the tone will subside gradually as the lie is being told, becoming in extreme cases almost impossible to hear. Sometimes, an individual reacts that way only because the subject of the conversation makes them uncomfortable. Other tricks to delay answering are: repeating the question that had just been posed, increasing the pauses in a conversation between words or between concept. These are all yellow flags that are worth being looked into, barring the cases where circumstances require a few moments to think before replying, or when a person has a naturally slow response time.

A Touch of Deception This is another phenomenon often associated with deception. Touching or scratching the face, nose, mouth, and eyes can be symptoms of discomfort produced from increasing stress or anxiety, but not necessarily from lying. Sometimes it can be just an itch, sometimes a cold, a little dust in the eyes or an allergy. At a dinner with friends while having fun a person could still do things such as touching their own face as a gesture of self-comfort when thinking about a meeting they will have the next day, or thinking back to a fight with a loved one the day before. Obviously, however, there is also the chance that that might be lie-induced stress, so since when you see a similar behavior increase your attention, but don't jump to conclusions. Replying Without Answering Sometimes a liar is just unprepared to respond, so in an extreme effort they try to avoid giving a meaningful answer. Several actions and replies fall into this category, for example responses such as: “Why do you ask a question like that?”, “I will not respond to such provocations”, “No comment”.

Also resuming a point that had been discussed before the critical question, or even ignoring the question altogether are all forms of “no responses”, sort of barriers that are used when one doesn't know what to say, when they are uncomfortable, or when they are taken by surprise.

Look Out for Shyness Be careful when assessing truthfulness in presence of shyness. Shy individuals may be mistaken for liars by common standards, even when they aren’t at all. Their tension, agitation, and gestures are not related with deception. Take your time to test them thoroughly before coming to any conclusion.

One Doesn’t Cut It! Aside from the specific tips and tricks, always keep in mind this fundamental principle: just one isolate symptom of deception isn’t enough to establish that the person in front of you is a liar. After all, as the

Food is a huge topic. We all know people who have allergies or are on some prescription medication. As I developed my intuition, one of the first things I learned was to replace my logical deductive menu choices with intuition.

Try closing your eyes for a moment and ask your body, what do I feel like eating right now? Using this simple technique, my choices changed to a healthier fare. Instead of a cheese tuna melt, coke, and french fries, I’d glance through the menu and realize I felt like having a salad or healthier sandwich. Eat organic whenever possible and more importantly, eat slowly and mindfully. When you are deliberately conscious and present in your body and aware of what's in your mouth as you eat, your eating habits will improve.

Sleep with lights off, turn the gadgets off. Good quality sleep is critical to outperform yourself physically, mentally or emotionally. There are many good, affordable, wearable activity trackers on the market, some measure sleep patterns. As you go to sleep, set intentions to release stress or even dream about solutions to challenges. Plan to wake up with solutions, feeling better and better.

6. To Thine Own Self Be True: Engage Your Heart Daily gratitude and appreciation. Love yourself, appreciate your opportunities and be grateful every day. Do not compare yourself to others. Everyone has a unique thumb print—not better or worse, just different. Know you are here for a reason. The truth of your individuality is enough. You are the perfect “You.” When you show up with fearless courage and fully engage your heart, your compassion and caring will be rewarded. Remember that!

Begin with the End in Mind: Add Intentions and Attitudes Stephen Covey was right when he wrote, “Begin with the end in mind.” Imagination and visualization combined with an emotionally driven positive mental attitude is a powerful recipe for manifestation. Paying attention to your most powerful emotions is the secret sauce.

Clarify your personal life mission, vision and purpose. Make sure it’s in alignment with your work. If it’s not, apply your fearless courage to make a change. If you don't change something, you create internal stress that often will manifest as health challenges, allergies, short temper, inability to focus and just plain unhappiness.

Align with your truth. Sometimes, the right coach can help with this process. Start each day with that positive mental attitude. Add the feeling of positive anticipation. I encourage my students and clients to say, "Somehow, some way!" You never know what amazing miracle or wonderful surprise will show up in your life.

3. A Stitch in Time Saves Nine: Meditate to Develop Mindfulness Many tell me, “I don't have time to close my eyes and center.” If you relate to the saying, "a stitch in time saves nine,” then consider this: when we set aside five to fifteen minutes each day to stop, relax, tune out the world and breathe, listening for an inner quiet moment, the benefits will outweigh the time invested.

It’s easy to do. Start with a specific focus: why am I doing this now, what do I need or want in my life? Relax your body. Consciously breathe deeply. Let your mind be present here and now, not on the past or the future, just be here now. Think to yourself, “Go to my center quiet place.” Imagine the center point of a still lake that has no ripples and no movement. Practice inner quiet for a few minutes daily.

Soon, you will find your intuition is working better. Insights, inspiration and answers will just bubble-up into your awareness, and you'll flow through life like a well-trained ninja -- ready for anything, responsive and on top of your creative game.

You can think of that baggage as being packed in four kinds of suitcases —

the “Big 4” energy blocks that dictate how we see the world and that hold us back from reaching our unlimited potential. Today we take a look at the four heavy “suitcases” we may be carrying and explore how to lighten that load.

Here are a couple of common limiting beliefs that hold many of us back. How about you have to work really hard to achieve success? Or that successful people are lucky? Or that you have to have money to make money?

Limiting Beliefs beliefs are those that hold you back from success. If you do not believe something is possible, you’re not likely to attempt it. Even if you do attempt it, you won’t devote much energy to achieving that goal.

Limiting beliefs are general beliefs about the world, your environment and situation, and the people around you that stand in your way. More often than not, you accept a limiting belief as true because you’ve learned it from someone else, or from an “authority,” such as the media, a book, or a movie.

You assume that it’s “just the way it is.”

Here is a classic example of a limiting belief: Up until 1954, it was commonly held that running a mile in under four minutes was impossible. Moreover, physiologists believed it was extremely dangerous even to attempt it. Yet on May 6 of that year, Roger Bannister crossed the finish line in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds, thereby disproving the myth forever.

It’s remarkable that Bannister accomplished his feat.

It required that he completely ignore the prevailing, limiting belief and construct an entirely different belief system for himself. What others saw as a limitation, he perceived as opportunity. And once he disproved the presumed limits of the human body, less than two months later, another runner, John Landy, broke Bannister’s record with a mile dash of 3 minutes and 57.9 seconds. What’s more, within just a few years, dozens of runners were leaving the four-minute mark in the dust.

There are several ways to challenge limiting beliefs. You can explore the effect the belief has had on your life, look for proof of its truth (or lack of proof), or modify the belief or aspects of the belief to better serve you.

Simply examining the belief with questions like “How true do I believe that is?” and the rhetorical “Where did I get that idea?” can also work remarkably well. Once you overcome limiting beliefs, they can no longer hold you back.

Assumptions

An assumption is a belief that is based on the premise that because something happened in the past, it is automatically going to happen again.

When you make choices based on your assumptions, you are letting the past control the future. Assumptions hold you back, because when you already “know” that something won’t work, you probably won’t even consider doing it. Even if you do attempt it, you won’t have a lot of energy for, or be engaged in what you’re doing, since you don’t really believe it can work. When you hold on to your assumptions, you miss out on many possibilities.

Imagine this scenario: A new salesperson has done five sales presentations, and none of the prospective clients have decided to buy her product. If she makes the assumption that she is not good at E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive Page 71

doing presentations, then it’s unlikely that she’ll put her all into soliciting them. And, even if she does end up doing one, the catabolic energy she brings with her to the presentation may actually repel her potential sales (and without her even realizing it, she has created more proof that her assumption was correct).

Here are what some typical assumptions might sound like: “If I don’t do it myself, it won’t be done right.”

“My kids are lazy and unproductive.”

“I’m no good at interviewing.”

“No one listens to what I’m saying.”

Because assumptions are primarily based on personal experience, they are internalized and emotional, and somewhat difficult to let go of. Delving deep to remove the emotion of the past experience may be necessary before moving forward.

The main question to ask when challenging an assumption is simply, “Just because that happened in the past, why must it happen again?”

This month, when you just “know” that something won’t work based on your past experience, recognize your assumption for what it is, question it, and consciously choose to let it go and take positive action.

Interpretations When you interpret something, you create an opinion about an event, situation, or experience. In essence, you create an explanation and then look for evidence to support its validity. When you make an interpretation, you don’t even see that other explanations exist. In actuality, though, an interpretation often represents only one viewpoint among the many that are possible.

Your interpretations hold a strong energetic charge, which affects your emotions and actions. If you believe your viewpoint of a particular situation is the only explanation, you might not be aware of another point of view.

You may end up wasting a lot of time and resources marching off in the wrong direction. Because you don’t see that other possibilities exist, you remain stuck in your story, and feel like you have no control over the outcome.

So let’s say you come into work one day, and your boss barely nods hello, and then goes into his office and closes the door. If you think that your boss acted that way because he is angry with you, you might spend the morning wondering what you did to get him mad, and you might be hesitant to approach him with the great idea you’d come up with on the way in to work.

As with assumptions, interpretations are personal and are somewhat difficult to let go of and challenge. Holding on to them may seem like the easy way out, as facing them may move you into uncharted territory. However, challenging your interpretations opens you up to a world of possibilities.

Typical interpretations may sound like this: “He doesn’t like me.”

“She thinks I’m incompetent.”

“They don’t want to follow orders.”

“My son is just not interested in doing his homework.”

Interpretations can be directly challenged by asking, “What’s another way to look at that?” Just realizing that there are other ways to look at something lessens the power of your interpretation. One way to do this is to imagine what another individual’s perspective of the situation might be. Asking for someone else’s point of view on a difficult situation (even if they are not directly involved) can break existing paradigms and open pathways for more successful solutions. Challenging yourself or others to argue the point of view directly opposite your interpretation also works remarkably well to arrive at new informaPage 74 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

In the example of the boss above, perhaps the reason why he barely acknowledged you was that he just received a disturbing phone call about a family member, or he had a deadline that had to be met — or…….Well, there are many possible explanations. What an opportunity you’d miss if you decided not to present your great idea based on your false interpretation.

This month, before you “jump to conclusions” and believe the first story that comes to mind, consider other possibilities that could lead you to new, empowering choices and actions.

The Gremlin

The final block we’ll talk about - the gremlin - is the most difficult to overcome, because it’s the most personal and holds the most energy.

This barrier is the gremlin within every one of us — the inner critic. You know that little voice in your head? That voice that tells you not to try, never to take a risk, always to take the safe road, and to compromise your life by playing small? That’s your gremlin, and the message from your gremlin’s warning is that you’re just not good enough to reach the summit of success.

Regardless of any evidence to the contrary, the gremlin’s annoying voice continues to whisper, “It ain’t gonna happen.” This debilitating message bubbles up in many forms: “I’m not smart enough, experienced enough, and attractive enough.” It all comes back to a simple and quite vicious block, “I’m just not good enough to cut it.”

Your gremlin is highly personal. It is rooted deeply inside you and carries the most intense emotional charge of any of the blocks we’ve explored.

Your gremlin thrives on fear. When you hear its whispers, your motivation to try withers. You dread failing, feeling pain, and being embarrassed. You can even be scared of succeeding if the gremlin convinces you that you’ll fail eventually.

So what are some typical gremlin statements? Do you hear any of these statements from your own inner critic?

“I’m not effective.”

If you’re not achieving what you want to, it’s most likely one of these four that’s keeping you stuck.

We need to learn to make conscious choices, choices that are made in the present moment, without all the emotional “baggage” we carry around. This month, think about examining the various content of your extra suitcases. Unpack some of them, and see how much lighter you feel.

“Who am I kidding, here?”

“I’m not smart enough to really do this job right.”

“I don’t have enough experience.”

“I don’t deserve great success.”

“They are going to find out I am a phony.”

Being aware of your gremlin is the first step towards lessening its power. Once you realize that your gremlin exists, give it an identity. Name it – and then, if you’d like, make it even more real by drawing it, sculpting it, or seeing it in your mind – whatever works for you. In doing this, you discover that the gremlin is only a part of who you are, not your whole identity. By seeing it in objective terms, you sap some of its strength. Gremlin work can be quite involved and is most effective when you are guided by a certified coach.

Yield: 4-6 portions Ingredients Amounts 4ea. English Cucumbers (med. size)  ½ c.

Sour Cream  ¼ c.

Honey (Clover)  1 ea.

2. Place all ingredients in a medium size bowl EXCEPT for Spanish Paprika.

You want to pick out the “perfect” wine to impress your client but everything looks like it is written in a foreign language. After only a few minutes the server asks if you have made your selection so you decide to order the most familiar thing on the menu. You are not sure your selection will coordinate with your meals and it costs more than your boss will tolerate for a client dinner. This type of list is a relatively

new approach that is organized by the flavor profile.

A typical category might be fruity whites or powerful reds and the wines in that category may be ordered from mildest to fullest. This allows diners to look for the type of wine they enjoy and then order options in the same flavor category. Your favorite grapes or countries may be located in many different categories. Once you get the hang of these lists, they are tons of fun. They don’t require any special knowledge of geography or grapes—just a knowledge what you like.

Now you should have a better understanding of the three most common ways that restaurants organize their lists. The geographic and grape varietal lists will account for 80% of the lists encountered, but the progressive list may be a growing trend. The next time you take an important client (or that special someone) to dinner they will be impressed with your ability to find the right wine in no time!

More Secrets to Ordering a Great Bottle of Wine Every Time!

Do Your Homework: The first step to ordering a great bottle happens before you arrive at the restaurant. See if the wine lists are online. If so, you can get an idea of what they offer and do a bit of research. If not, you may want time after you are seated to digest the wine list and narrow down your choices. The easiest way to do this is to order sparkling wine to begin. Italian Prosecco or Spanish Cava are usually my choices since they’re tasty, affordable and pair nicely with most appetizers.

Speak Up: Ask the sommelier or server for suggestions. Most are eager to help and have tasted most (if not all) of the wines on their list.

Those of us who have chosen wine as a career enjoy drinking wine every night but don’t necessarily have large budgets. Sommeliers and servers will know the best bargains because that is what we are drinking at home!

Don’t Break the Bank: If you are on a budget but don’t want the client to know that, point out a wine in your price range and then ask for an alternate suggestion. Any good server will recommend something within $10 of the wine you pointed out. Don’t go for the least expensive bottle, however; look for the second or third level wines.

The lowest priced wines are actually marked up the most, sometimes 4 or 5 times cost, whereas higher priced wines might only be marked up 2 times cost.

Get the Point: Let’s face it, we are not experts in French, Spanish or Italian but that doesn’t stop us from enjoying the wine right? If you find a great wine you want to order but are afraid to pronounce it, look for the Bin Number listed to the left of the wine. Many restaurants use these as a method to organize their wine inventory. If the list does not list bin numbers, then point to the wine in question and any astute server will get the message.

Hidden Gems: Resist the temptation to order the cult favorites like Opus One or other highly sought after wines with name recognition. These wines are expensive because, like Gucci or Cartier, the brand’s status is part of what you are paying for. Many times you can find wines that are similar in quality for much less, especially if you are willing to try lesser known grape varietals or regions.

Ask your sommelier or server. They will be able to recommend the best buys.

Keep on Sipping: Try to taste as much as you can at home or at free in-store tastings. Retail wines are usually only marked up 30-50% over cost as opposed to the standard 2-3 times markup at a restaurant. Experimenting at home will give you the experience to order great wine you’ll love when you are out!

There are Places – I Remember One is the Hidden Gems of British Columbia: White Rock

When people think of British Columbia, they tend to think of Vancouver or Victoria, or perhaps Whistler, but there are so many hidden gems to explore in this beautiful province of Canada. White Rock in one of those hidden gems.

The Semiahmoo Bay is well-known as an excellent bird -watching area. White Rock has 4 distinct areas: 1) Uptown, which has shopping, art and

Across the bay is the San Juan Islands of Washington.

When the tide is out, you can explore the sandy flats and tidal

pools, as the water recedes almost the entire way out to the end of pier. While I was at the end of the pier, I watched a group of people fishing and saw a seagull feast on a tasty crab.

The city gets its name from its legendary white rock, just on the beach near the pier.

It is a glacial deposit left behind during the last glaciation. It became white from the shellfish eating seabirds, but the city keeps it painted white today.

The rock weighs 486 tons and is 4 meters high.

White Rock’s promenade stretches for just over 2km. There is easy, and plentiful, pay parking along the stretch of the promenade. There are also plenty of benches and grassy spots, perfect for picnicking. The waterfront is full of coffees shops, ice cream/gelato shops, fish and chip shops, plenty of other restaurants and sidewalk cafes. I enjoyed a delicious latte while wandering along the promenade and watching the locals on

On a Sunday mornings, the Hemingway Waterfront Public House is popular for it’s $4 breakfast, usually with a line at the door waiting for the restaurant to open. their morning run.

White Rock hosts a number of festivals throughout the year, including the Annual Sea Festival in August, the Fall Festival of the Arts from SeptemberOctober, the White Rock Irish Festival in March, and many more.

If sports are for you, White Rock is perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding, cycling and hiking. This small city boasts 13 parks with plenty of trails and areas to explore. If you’re interested in learning more about the history of White Rock, stop by the White Rock Museum & Archives, right next to the pier (admission via donation). The museum has a charming gift shop as well. White Rock has a lovely mild climate year-round, and it manages to miss out on some of the fog and rain that the rest of the area gets. It’s the perfect place to escape from the city and catch some sun.

Back in those days though, the goal was the book. I imagined I would write the book and then it would sell and I would be a famous professional writer. The perfect ending to a perfect life.

As my first rejection occurred and I came to the conclusion I wouldn’t be the youngest published writer, writing a book went on the back burner for real life.

While in Canada running a poetry organization, I decided to create a publishing company as I didn’t see how else to get my work out there, and I was encountering a lot of other great writers who needed help.

(The Poetry of Business), six other authors, and published a magazine called Poetry Canada that was distributed around the world.

Here is what I discovered as a publisher; - publishing is a lot of work - writing books is easy - selling is even harder.

Even with a book tour in Canada’s largest bookstore - Chapters - the book did not sell well.

Even with a fully developed sales page that I paid $5000 for (back in 1996), and a large poetry organization at my disposal, it failed as far as sales, and reaching my goal of becoming a bestselling author.

It was then that I could see without marketing, or a target market for your book, if you are writing it to make money, there will be a problem. Lessons learned, but I still didn’t know what to do with them yet. All the books I had published were great, well written, but no target market. And

Simply because for most people it takes too long to create a book, and then if you think the book is the money maker, that is where your plan could collapse.

The book IS NOT YOUR MONEY MAKER. It is the front of a funnel - so don’t start on that unless you have a backend the book feeds. I went from nobody, to bestselling author, to making 6 figures to being awarded New Internet Marketing Success of the Year within my first 6 months, and then appearing on the World Internet Summit stage - fully paid by them from California to Singapore for my first speaking engagement in front of 3400 people. That launched another back end selling from the stage.

The key is to make this a part of your multiple streams of income by leveraging the book as an inexpensive front end to your funnel or you can

make it your business card and give it to high end clients as a differentiator and foot in the door.

When I launched my book, I was making pennies per copy. Your book is never about the book - despite the effort, blood, sweat and soul you poured into it.

When you go into your funnel marketing- based on that, you will be able to let go of short term gain for long term results.

The key is you are looking for a no brainer decision at a price point they are comfortable with. The better they know you - the more you can ask. If they don’t know you well start with a $997 offer for $497, if they know you a bit - $1997 for $1497. To go much lower than $497 it will be hard to make money fast enough to have made the book and book launch effort worth it.

So how does it convert well irresistible offer fantastic price for what they are getting bonus items that make it a no brainer book purchase and upsell offer well written sales page well done presentation. Additional advanced elements JV partners also promoting for 50% of the upsell - this is what Brendan also had

If you can’t have any other products in your funnel except for a book, then it’s the lead in for speaking gigs and contacting corporate sponsors to get their logos in your book (have a private label version printed for them), and use them to get speaking gigs where you get your fee and your book is donated.

So a book isn’t a magic pill that will take you from obscurity to best seller to recognized expert.

You do that. You are just using the book as a tool. It takes marketing - just like every other stream option.

This is a fantastic product to quickly increase your exposure and perceived value in an industry,

When I did my book I worked on marketing as much as I wrote, to prepare for the launch. Even if you have a publisher, they just publish. Your job is to promote and sell it.

Creativity Brightens The Spirit

Listen to Bach or the lyrics of Lennon and McCartney; watch Meryl Steep in The Devil Wears Prada, Michael Jackson moon-walk or Baryshnikov soar; read a great novel or write one.

What a joy.

I love good books, am a voracious reader and never more jazzed than when I am writing a novel – how does my private eye protagonist bring the evil bastard to justice while the love of his life isn’t aware that the guy she is working with is trying to jump her bones?

I have another passion that could more accurately be classified as a fetish: I am a ceaseless observer of advertising and marketing campaigns – print ads, radio and television commercials, websites, marketing pieces, packaging and PR offerings.

I relish great ad campaigns. They make me smile.

Drives me crazy to see corporations spend millions on production and advertising costs for sophomoric commercials that appeal only to the drug addled minds of college freshman.

Somehow he’ll work it out.

In our professions we express and expect productivity, opportunity, and sometimes, contractual agreements. In all of personal or professional connections we strive to experience a quality interaction, a sense of security, personal validation, and a confirmation of similarity or common ground. In all societies relationships reflect worth and significance, but in some they rank at the highest level of meaning.

The Arab World utilizes strong family connections in a system called Wasta. Wasta evolved to preserve the social structure of various tribes, and allowed leaders to distribute the tribe’s wealth to preserve peace and harmony. It protected the tribe from internal competition.

Personal networks in Russia are called Blat. In Cuba it’s called Sociolismo, the reciprocal exchange of favors by individuals, usually relating to circumventing bureaucratic restrictions or obtaining hard-to-find goods.

And China has one of the most coveted of all relationship connections called Guanxi (gwan‐shee). It’s the penultimate in relationship impact when doing business with the Chinese, who have a cultural system that is rich in distinct national style. That style took shape within the terrain of China over more than 5,000 years ago. The Great Wall kept China a relatively enclosed geographical area, with exceptional natural advantages for Chinese culture to evolve into a stable and independent system.

In China the rule of Guanxi dictates success in interpersonal connections and professional networks. Relationships are more important there than in many countries. Guanxi translates as “relationships” or “connections” but it means far more.

As I said, there are many types of relationships in our lives, and Guanxi is most interesting because of traditional Chinese culture. Confucianism, Taoism, Marxist philosophy, and the influence of western culture have shaped it.

There’s a well-known Chinese proverb that says, “The rules are fixed, the people are flexible.” This quite aptly describes Guanxi. It’s one of the most powerful forces in Chinese culture, and especially business. Now that China has become the emerging superpower of the 21st century, the old saying, “Who you know is more important than what you know” holds very true.

FACT: The foundation of Chinese culture impacts consumers more than the influence of Western culture so if you are going to do business IN or WITH Chinese nationals it is important to understand what drives them as people and consumers.

Seniority is also important in China right down to when you give out name cards; make sure you start with the most senior person before moving down the line. Also, make it a point to stretch out with both hands to either receive of hand out a name card.

Based on strong ties of blood relations and social group identities. Outsiders gain entry only when a mutual friend vouches.

By relying on unequal personal obligations, guanxi networks reduce transaction costs, mistrust, and deceitful opportunism. Thus, efficient economic exchanges can occur outside formal organizations and social institutions, helping China to make its transition to a market economy.

Guanxi – it’s the magic tool. A person having wide guanxi is considered to have great guanxi “resources.”

1. A personal connection between two people in which one is able to prevail upon another to perform a favor or service, or be prevailed upon.

2. Based on relationships, but relationships do not guarantee the development of guanxi.

3. Long-term social obligation.

4. An active connection.

5. A dynamic process of reciprocal exchange.

Form of social capital.

The term guanxi also expresses an obligation of one party to another. If you have "guanxi" you have type of currency. It’s like money. It’s a resource that can be saved, spent or exchanged between different parties, even exhausted or overextended. Implicit to this arrangement means you will reciprocate when the need arises.

The growth of guanxi practices in China can be associated with the breakdown in social order during the Cultural Revolution and as a product of economic reform and the emergence of capitalism.

With the further progress in the market economy and an emerging democratic civil society, the importance of business guanxi will be gradually reduced rather than increased. In addition, the emergence of legal system, formal rational bureaucra cies at the firm level, reduced power of government on market, and increased contract -based agreement help to reduce the impor tance of guanxi in the future.

"Face" is an abstract concept that can be described as a combination of social standing, reputation, influence, dignity, and honor.

Guanxi may sound like a simple concept, but it’s really complex. One cannot transgress social codes, so factors like sensitivity, reputation, success, integrity, moral character, selfesteem, emotional linkages, and respect these are all closely tied to “saving face,” another crucial aspect of guanxi.

Although in the West we tend to appreciate people who are "brutally honest" or who get to the point quickly, the - opposite holds true in Asia.

Important meetings are often preceded with hours of face building before getting down to business.

From a Western perspective, it is very difficult to fully appreciate just how critically important the role of face is in the day-to-day lives of the Chinese.

Face is a concept of central importance because of its pervasive influence in interpersonal relations among Chinese.

Loss of “face” causes embarrassment and makes it impossible for her/him to function properly within the community. Causing the Chinese partner to lose “face” will damage the business relationship. Giving “face” is a very important concept in China: you must give appropriate respect according to rank and seniority to avoid making her/him look bad in public. Why is this important? Because 93% Chinese think “face” is very important!

Chinese thinking is indirect. American thinking is direct and straightforward. Let's look at behavior that promotes one’s self-interest. China is a collectivism country, which means it’s a low individualism country that reflects a “We” mentality that subjugates individual to the benefit of the group, and emphasizes ties of kinship and close personal relationships.

• Individual conforms to the group norm and adopts group opinions in exchange for reciprocal care and protection • Each member of society is primarily concerned with his or her own interest and those of the immediate family.

The Chinese-born founder of a well-known technology company recently made a distinction between Western and Chinese business cultures. In the West, he said the focus is on "covering your ass"; risk and liability are top of mind and Western businesses spend a lot hiring lawyers and designing contracts to control risks.

The mindset comparison between Chinese and Americans is dramatically clear.

The Chinese tend to be: • Indirect • Implicit • Intuitive • Seeking the path • Non-linear thinker • Introverted and self-restrained • Valuing privacy is not that important • Doing business is all about building a personal long-term relationship.

When Americans are doing business, they tend to be: • Direct • Explicit • Rational • Seeking the truth • Linear thinkers • Analytical • Extroverted • Aggressive • Valuing privacy as a priority • Doing business is all about the short-term, and separate from personal relationships.

In China, it is all about "giving face"; getting your counter party on your side so as to avoid confrontation and lawsuits. He made it clear that he regarded the Chinese culture as inherently superior.

In terms of human relations, again the differences are obvious. Social networks and interpersonal relationships are more complicated in China than in the U.S. .

• In China, people are INTER-dependent.

The role of trust, family, and favors serves as a foundation for these traditional methods of interpersonal connections and networks, and whether other cultures and countries westernize, internationalize, or modernize, these systems will continue. For western professionals these are essential realities to recognize and understand when doing business in other parts of the world, especially Asia.

The Chinese, based on their philosophy of life, look at time as a process of eternity. What is the point of keeping such a tight schedule? Rice will grow by seasons not by minutes; the sun will rise day after day. What really matters is how life can be made natural and enjoyable each day. If one is always processed by time where is the quality of life to be found? The Chinese look upon each experience as different and unique, not accumulative in a linear fashion.

China’s impact on American business is inestimable.

What CAUSED my body, after 30 Years to TRIGGER my Celiac Disease?

I ate pizza, drank beer, indulged in many a wheat item for most of my life and felt just fine… Until one day I didn’t. That day turned into weeks and eventually into years, 7 years to be exact. I felt powerless to what was happening inside and outside of my body and I felt like I was losing control. The symptoms would come and go, confusing doctors across the board on what the cause was, so time and time again I misdiagnosed.

Vertigo was the first and by far the worst symptom to hit me; never a day went by that I was not dizzy, I learned to get use to it. There were also: incessant

restless leg syndrome, serious depression, and severe lethargy.

For a while I thought I might have had Narcolepsy, the sleeping disorder, but that wasn’t the case either. I detoxed with cleanses and starved myself because I felt better with no food, this only exacerbated an already worsening condition.

Celiac disease triggered other issues as well like: thinning hair, anemia, malabsorption of vitamins, general body aches and weakened tooth enamel.

As time passed the symptoms progressed and got worse, yet the diagnosis was still a big question mark. I was accused of making it all up and told to see a psychiatrist for mental instability. I definitely felt mentally unstable, frustrated and generally pissed off. I felt so bad one way or another that slowly over time I retreated to the comforts of my home and became a hermit.

I was known as the chronic canceller because the sickness would come on so suddenly that I would have to break plans at the drop of a hat.

I withdrew from family, friends stopped calling and soon it was just me, alone and I

preferred it that way. I didn’t have to explain or pretend to feel ok with a fake smile covering it all.

I ran through jobs and my savings due to extended periods where I wasn’t able to work or would have to leave early due to illness or my general bad attitude would get me fired.

I hated the lonely and bitter person I had become as the depression started to consume every piece of me. I would be immobile for days, sometimes weeks and by the last two years it turned into months. My quality of life had seriously diminished and if I was not such a strong woman, I probably would have ended it, because that is all I thought about. I knew I could not live like this for the rest of my life and the people who were suppose to help me called me crazy; so I retreated

into myself and into the bubble life I had created.

Finally, in November of 2010, a friend of mine invited me to do a focus group for a diet called, 7 Days to Slimdown.

This was a food-based diet where the company would cook and deliver healthy meals everyday for 7 days and I had to participate in a spin class every morning. I had no idea how I was going to get up to exercise when I could barely motivate to shower, but somehow I did. Within a few days, I was already starting to improve. By the end of seven days I felt like a new person and stronger than I had in years. I was waking up happy with a smile on my face and for the first time in forever, there E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive Page 117

was no nausea or vertigo or fatigue. What the heck had happened, surely it couldn’t be the exercising, because I had already tried that. On the last day during the weigh in I was talking to another participant about all the medical problems I had up until that point and how baffled I was about my life completely changing in one week.

She listened patiently and then said, “you should look into getting tested for Celiac Disease.”

My response, ‘For what? What the heck is Celiac Disease?’

For the next week I scanned the internet and read everything I could on-free and Celiac disease. The more I read the more I realized I had finally figured out what was wrong with me. I went back to the doctor who called me crazy and told him to test me, now. It must have been my feisty nature that kept him tight lipped this time around and he took a blood test first and then went ahead with the biopsy to be sure.

I had finally figured it out after seven years through a casual conversation with a stranger. The first thing I did was go to Veliac Disease.

People start taking probiotics and supplements to try to regain their health, but the fact is, with a compromised intestine those supplements probably are not being absorbed. My first six months I had to get vitamin B & multi-vitamin packed shots in my butt to make sure my body was getting what it needed.

I also purchased liquid vitamins from Whole Foods that I could drop under my tongue for instant absorption. The shots and liquid turned out to be the best options for my body getting healthy quicker.

The first 6 months to a year were by far the hardest. I made mistake after mistake, eating things I assumed were gluten-free but weren’t like: soy sauce, licorice, french-fries or Bloody Mary mix on football Sundays. I wasn’t tediously reading every label ALL the time or asking enough of the right questions like I should have been; but I didn’t know and the learning curve was huge.

It seemed no matter how much I educated myself on the do’s & do not’s, the effects of cross contamination and reading labels, I was still getting sick. Which was very overwhelming because now that I was feeling almost 100%, I had no desire what so ever

I learned wheat gluten was in more things than I had even imagined, like the coating in my multi-vitamin and one of the main ingredients in my lip balm. to take any steps backwards.

Going gluten free isn’t as easy as deciding to though, especially if it is not a choice but a necessity. Healing and living a gluten-free lifestyle takes research, constant awareness, and patience. The villi in my intestines had been compromised and malabsorption of integral vitamins and minerals had occurred. Just because you switch it up to a gluten-free diet, it does not mean that all of a sudden you are cured, I think this is a huge mistake easily made.

One of the hardest and most frustrating parts about having Celiac Disease and being glutenfree is continuing to get ‘glutened’ after the fact.

In the beginning I also weaned myself off of sugar, dairy, oats, etc… I tried to stay on a detoxing whole fresh food diet for the first 3-6 months to help my body heal. I'd heard from others that after going GF they couldn't eat dairy anymore or

there was no way I could live without cheese, oats or certain GF grains;

please don't make me give up cheese. Giving it all up for a few months instead of the rest of my life was definitely worth it.

Little by little I introduced it all back and haven't had a problem; though I did have to give up wine for two years because I would sneeze and sneeze within the first couple sips. I was hoping that would go away and finally it did; now I am able to drink wine with no sniffling issues at all, unless it is cheap.

I think the weaning process in the beginning is extremely important to not only healing the body but also for not creating any more intolerances when the intestine is at such a fragile state. the body thoroughly before driving it again. Your car runs better and longer after you’ve changed the oil and tune it up on a regular basis; it's the same concept with the human body. The beginning is tough, trying to figure out what to eat, what not to eat.

People ask me, how do you stay so thin? Well, while everyone is eating whatever they like, I’m the one in the corner eating from the veggie tray, the only gluten free food available that is safe. No matter what people say, eating gluten free is not a fad for those who need it, trust me it is real and the only way to treat Celiac Disease.

Getting back to the original question though… the jury is still out on that and may be for a long while.

Maybe my Celiac was triggered in 2003 after a bad E Coli infestation while I was living in Guatemala. My intestines had shut down for two weeks, losing 13 pounds in 6 days and I was sick for about a year after. All I know is that somewhere along the way Celiac disease reared its ugly head.

Since there are so many areas that can be affected by gluten, the list of symptoms are long and growing.

Restaurant glutening and CROSS CONTAMINATION is a huge problem, especially with items that say ‘GF’.

The actual ingredients they use might not have gluten but where it is prepared, the pans they cook it on or the utensils used, might be; especially when corn is used, unless organic or certified gluten-free.

For example, on a rare occasion that I happened to be eating out, I was explaining the seriousness of my situation to the waiter and could feel him rolling his eyes as he was taking my order; I knew there was going to be a problem. As he placed my very specifically ordered salad before me, laden with croutons, I bit my tongue and nicely explained again I was a medical Celiac etc etc.

He took my salad away and within moments had brought the same salad back minus the croutons; I could see the little crumbs all over. I looked at my friend, we grabbed our jackets and decided to leave; but not before having a strongly worded conversation with the manger.

For a Celiac, it only takes a few crumbs to create a glutening effect that hits within minutes; bulging my stomach so bad I look 3 months pregnant. I feel lucky that I have overt symptoms because I can and will never cheat. Most though, 9 out of 10 people to be exact, are asymptomatic and still eat gluten because they aren’t seeing or feeling the true damage being done inside.

My advice, ALWAYS READ LABELS, all labels. If you cannot read labels then ask questions, if you do not get an answer you feel comfortable with then do not eat it. Always bring some sort of snack reserves with you just in case, this has saved me more often than I can say. The last thing you want to do is be so hungry that you decide to eat something you know will make you sick. Call ahead to restaurants and ask about how they prepare their food and about cross contamination.

Do your research to educate yourself so you can educate those around you.

And most of all, do not give up, it does get easier and in the long run you are healthier because of it.

The Foundation’s mission is to enrich, educate, empower, and prepare at-risk teen AfricanAmerican and Hispanic girls through a Leadership and Empowerment Academy.

To date, two successful programs have been implemented with a total of 47 participants and their parents with the Perris Union Valley High School District. However, the need to include more teen girls is critical. Due to demand for a program of this caliber to be implemented in other high school districts, the program has been expanded to include teen girls in one targeted high school in the Moreno Valley Unified School District. The program is unique in that it is youth-driven and centered on leadership and empowerment.

It recognizes the importance of nurturing the Inland Empire’s young female leaders as they begin to understand their own power in creating “positive’ change through leadership, community engagement and advocacy.

Overall, the Success 4 U Teen Leadership and Empowerment Academy (TLEA) provides a comprehensive leadership program targeted towards at-risk teen girls. A parental component is included in the program to achieve positive and greater program success and sustainability. The primary outcomes of the Teen Leadership and Empowerment Academy are: 1) to develop the leadership and life skills of teen girls, 2) to help them navigate adolescence, 3) to reduce teen pregnancy rates, 4) to prepare them with the essential mathematic skills that will assure them of success in high school and college, 5) to increase high school graduation rates, 6) to increase their exposure to role models, mentors, and their knowledge of future career options, 7) to develop financial awareness and skills, and 8) increase their communication skills to develop healthy relationships among peers, counselors, teachers and parents.

These outcomes are achieved through leadership institutes, life/growth empowerment and experiential learning workshops, field trips, special seminars and programming for parents. The program’s approach is to impact teen girls’ lives through holistic programming delivered by trained practitioners and experts from various disciplines (academia, medical/health sciences, business, financial entities, faith-based and other nonprofits).

The concept of incorporating the participation of the parents in this youth programs set this initial teen program apart from others in that it was proven that mandatory parental involvement resulted in greater program success and sustainability.

Nicolle Wallace

Author, political commentator. She previously served as

communications chief during the presidency of George W. Bush and in his 2004 re-election campaign.

In 2008, Wallace also served as a senior advisor for the McCain–Palin campaign. She is a co-host of the talk show The

View.

She is the author of the 2010 novel Eighteen Acres (a reference to the 18 acres on which the White House complex sits),a fictional narrative about three powerful women at the top of their careers—the first female U.S. President, her chief of staff and a White House correspondent.

Wallace said, "It's my best attempt at a story that I hope people will pick up and read and enjoy and maybe feel like they're getting to see what it's really like in the White House in this entirely fictional story."

Eighteen Acres received praise from several sources and across the political spectrum. The Washington Post book reviewer wrote: "To say that Nicolle Wallace's 'Eighteen Acres' is one of the best novels I've read about life in the White House may be faint praise—there haven't been many good ones—but her book is both an enjoyable read and a serious look at what high-level political pressures do to people."USA Today said "Nicolle Wallace actually knows what she's talking about"and The New York Times called the book "an engaging, easy read."TV personalities such as George Stephanopoulos, Rachel Maddow, John King, and Andrea Mitchell also praised Eighteen Acres.

In September 2011, Wallace published the sequel to Eighteen Acres, It's Classified, about a fictional presidential campaign troubled by a mentally-ill vice presidential candidate. Wallace said the premise was inspired by her experience as a Senior Adviser to the McCain/Palin campaign.

Her New Book Madam President Madam President, the third novel in the Eighteen Acres trilogy tells the story of a single extraordinary day in the life of the White House.

President Charlotte Kramer is preparing for an in-depth day of interviews with CBS News–a production that the White House refers to as a “Presidential Day in the Life.” The purpose of the CBS filming is to pull back the curtain on President Kramer’s second term White House, particularly now that she has all of the scandals of the first term behind her. Charlotte’s new Press Secretary, Dale Smith, is charged with shepherding the two dozen news crews through the day.

Dale and Charlotte have a complicated personal history, but they’ve been able to put the past behind them.

Melanie Kramer, the country’s secretary of defense, and one of President Kramer’s closest advisors is also asked to participate. The perfectly scripted day is upended by a surprise critique from the President’s own daughter.

While the White House scrambles to prevent the family feud from overtaking the rest of the day’s events, the White House staff hears news of an explosion in New York City. A few minutes later, they hear of more attacks. Soon it becomes clear that this is not typical day in the life of the White House. Rather, it’s a day of terror and violence that the nation has not seen since September 11, 2001.
