What is a Female Executive? I am the one that makes the bread, weaves the fabric, creates the peace, negotiates the smiles, shuts it down and wakes it all back up. I am the Swiss Army Knife of mankind. I am the one that gives birth and keeps life goingwhether I have to nudge it with my heart, my mind, my blood or my foot! I keep the bass rhythm of life moving. I am that female that executes the needed, the necessary and the fantastic. I am THAT female executive.

From the Editor and Chief Creative Officer Welcome to the Fall 2016 Issue of E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive. This month's theme is “When the Student (America) is ready the Teacher (Our Own History) will Arrive. I commend America for having the courage to address it’s own history which is OUR history-all of us. It’s a great thing we do to tell the truth and an even greater thing we do to learn from it. -Althea Ledford. Another thing about the truth. First it stings and then it heals but it always remains constant. Happily we are moving to the other side of this event-slavery, injustice and oppression. Slavery was a shared experience in America and a painful process for the entire country. Like so many other types of sin, long term consequences seem so far away, when one is lavishing in the power, lusts and spoils– of owning, selling and buying other human beings. But again, like so many other types of sin, when you wake up to what your actually doing or what you’ve actually done-there is shame, denial and the task of atonement. And the bigger the sin, the more painful the task of looking back at it. Healing starts when we can meet our actions with the truth. When we ca address pain from a higher source known as forgiveness. When we can acknowledge the awful and still hold peace and hope for the future. Hatred must be uprooted or it will continue to grow and bear fruit. Hatred cannot be tolerated in any color, gender, construct or format.
I hope you enjoy this issue. -Althea Ledford

How can you use Facebook Live? First of all let me give you a brief introduction to live video streaming. Live video streaming means that you can stream video live from a device, generally a Smartphone to anybody else who happens to have the app installed either on their Smartphone, computer or tablet device as well. Having live video streaming is a bit like having your own TV station, you can broadcast your own programming anytime that you want, however, unlike with a real TV station where you need a studio with lots of cameras and lighting, lots of expensive equipment and highly trained technicians, with Facebook Live all you need is a Smartphone and the app. Page 30 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Now of course the concept of video streaming has been around for a while with Meerkat, Blab, Periscope and others, but what the competitors don’t have is the power of Facebook behind them and when Mark Zuckerberg wants something to work, you can imagine the resources he will pour into it.
How can you use Facebook Live? The ways to use this app are only limited by your imagination. You can film a workout like one of my clients who have a fat and pain reduction process called Block Therapy. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
The ways to use this app are only Limited by your imagination. You can select a topic and chat over a cup of coffee - think a tamer version of Jerry Seinfield’s Coffee with Comedians. You can point it at yourself and talk Play a musical instrument or broadcast your band rehearsal to start promotions Do a product demonstration such as make up application or hair styling Start an “Ask” series on your topic Read your book and answer questions after If you own a restaurant you could have the cameras rolling in the kitchen or demo how to make certain dishes
How can you use Facebook Live for Business? Besides using it in ways I Page 31 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
described above, there are some big benefits to using it for your business such as brand building, establishing yourself as the authority, connecting more intimately with your followers, and staying ahead of your competition. so you can get as big an audience as possible
Facebook Live Best Practices Now that you have determined you’re going to use Facebook Live, it’s time to get some good practices in place. 1. Let people know ahead of time when you’re going to broadcast Promote via Facebook - you can also do a shout out Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
to your followers on Twitter, and if you’re aiming at a business audience then probably making a post to your followers on LinkedIn would be a good idea as well. Something else that you can do is to send an email to your list of course, just like you would if you were holding a webinar or something like that and of course you should post the date and time on your blog so that your blog followers can tune in and also anybody who happens to find your blog through an internet search can also login and find out when your broadcast is going out.
Facebook recommends that you go live for at le ten minutes and you can stay live for up to 90 m
2. Ensure when you go live when you have a strong connection. WiFi tends to work best but if you can’t find a nearby network then you’ll want a 4G connection. If you have a weak signal the Go Live button will be grayed out and you won’t be able to broadcast so you want to make sure that you’ve got that ahead of time before you start to do your broadcast.
Page 32 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
3. You also want to write a compelling description before going live and a great description will capture fans’ attention and help them understand what your broadcast is all about and that means they’re more likely to watch it right through to the end and they’re more likely to hear your message in its entirety. 4. You should ask your viewers to follow you and receive notifications when you go live. Call out that your audience can tap on the Follow button on live videos and videos that were live and then opt-in to get notifications the next time that you go live. Again it gives them more notification so that they’ll know ahead of time Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
invite their friends on Facebook to watch the video. Facebook recommends that you go live for at least ten minutes and you can stay live for up to 90 minutes so you’ve got a lot of scope there, a lot of time that you can use.
east minutes when your broadcast is going to go out. 5. You want to say hello to commenter’s by name and respond to their comment, because one of the great things about Facebook Live is that you can communicate with your audience, they can send you comments which you can read as you’re making your video and you can respond to them in real time. And your audience will be thrilled to hear you mention their name and answer their questions when you’re live. 6. You should broadcast for longer periods of time to reach more people because the longer you broadcast the more people are likely to discover you and they’re going to Page 33 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
7. Broadcast from your business page versus personal to be able to access more features within Facebook 8. Finally Facebook recommend that you be creative and go live often. You can try different types of broadcast, try giving a talk to camera, try giving a webinar or a liveinar I suppose you could call it over Facebook Live, you could try how-to, lots of different things just to keep your audience interested, to keep them coming back for more. Don’t do the same thing over and over again because that’s just going to be boring, and you should go live frequently to keep your audience engaged. You know out of sight is out of mind so you want to make sure that people keep coming back for more and that they see something that’s going to interest them every time. So I hope to see you on Facebook Live and shoot me a link when you’re live. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Why Vladimir Putin Favors Secretary Clinton

While the Trump campaign has vociferously applauded the Kremlin and its alleged support, the reality is that the joke is on Donald Trump. The other reality is that Moscow would much prefer to deal Secretary Clinton as president. Secretary Clinton is predictable, based not only on her tenure as Secretary of State from 2009 through 2013, but also during her eight years as First Lady from January 20, 1993 to January 20, 2001. Mr. Putin has used dark public relations or "Black PR", a process of destroying the target's reputation. It started on December 15, 2015 when Mr. Putin issued a statement that stopped short of endorsing Mr. Trump for president, stating, “[Donald Trump is] a really brilliant and talented person, without any doubt. It’s not our job to judge his qualities, that’s a job for American voters, but he’s the absolute leader in the presidential race. He says he wants to move on to a new, more substantial relationship, a Page 38 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
deeper relationship with Russia, how can we not welcome that? Of course we welcome that.” While a recent WikiLeaks dump of 20,000 emails belonging to the Democratic National Committee has caused political sensation, it has never been proven that the documents were obtained from Russian intelligence. This was followed by July 2016 media reports that the Kremlin had obtained all 31,830 emails sent from a private server by Secretary Clinton’s during her tenure as Secretary of State. Even though Russian intelligence is considered to be the most Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
eventually taken as truth, so that an unsourced narrative, repeated, will eventually become the “truth.”,” stated Paul Roderick Gregory, a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, at Stanford and Cullen Professor of Economics at the University of Houston specializing in Russian politics (Emphasis in Original).
capable nation-state cyberespionage and cyberwarfare power, it has not produced a single email. And, one must consider the fact that as Secretary of State, her private and government accounts both during and after her official tenure were actively monitored by U.S. intelligence officials to prevent hacking from ever occurring in the first instance. “Those who follow Kremlin propaganda understand that it is not necessary for Putin to have Clinton’s e-mails to cause serious damage to a Clinton presidency… The Kremlin knows that repeated lies are Page 39 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
As for Trump, many Russian scholars have depicted him as an undesirable wildcard, vastly unpredictable and not someone Mr. Putin has any intention of working with on sensitive matters affecting global stability and security. Among the many comments made: A lawmaker in Russia’s upper house of parliament speaking anonymously said a potential Trump presidency, “…sounds very attractive but it could end as a catastrophe for everyone. The problem? He is unpredictable.” “Clearly the conservatives are pro-Trump, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the top people really want Trump. It could be incredibly disruptive. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Can you imagine if all the things he has said come true?” I
think that there are very few sane politicians of any kind, including Russians, who would actually want a Trump presidency. But they are enjoying the spectacle…,” said Maxim Trudolyubov, a senior fellow with the Kennan Institute. Igor Ivanov, president of the Russian International Affairs Council, stated that a ““newcomer” would be harder to deal with: inconsistent, unpredictable, given to subjective and emotional decisions that can be very hard to rectify later on.”
Page 40 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Having a “…flighty and irascible populist who changes his mind three times a day” at the head of a nuclear superpower “may pose danger to the whole world and for Russia in particular,” opined Pavel Demidov, a professor at the Russian state MGIMO University. Konstantin Kosachev, head of the international affairs committee in the Federation Council, stated that under a Trump presidency, “a certain window of possibilities may naturally appear. But not all those possibilities may be desirable… Trump is not predictable enough.”
Secretary Clinton is predictable. While it is likely that she will continue many of Obama Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
administration’s policies, she is also equally likely to be influenced by her husband, former President William Clinton. During the Clinton Administration, the U.S.’s relationship with Russia vastly improved. President Clinton enjoyed a cordial relationship Boris Yeltsin, with whom he met with on 18 occasions. As Secretary of State Mrs. Clinton was responsible a “reset” in U.S. relations with then Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who served under then President Dmitry Medvedev, at a meeting held in Geneva. Called the “Moscow Spring”, it revitalized the relationship with Russia resulting in Page 41 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
a nuclear arms-control treaty and Russia acquiescing to NATO-led military intervention in Libya. The Geneva meeting also resulted in a tentative agreement to resolve the Syrian War; an agreement the Obama Administration failed to back. After Mr. Putin was elected a second time in 2012, protesters accused Mr. Putin of having rigged recent elections, Mr. Putin blamed Secretary Clinton, who had called the election results “dishonest and unfair” of giving “a signal” to demonstrators working “with the support of the U.S. State Department” to undermine his presidency. The decisive blow came when the U.S. sanctioned Russia on July 17 2014 Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

based on unlawful aggressions in Ukraine and the shooting down of flight MH17. In October 2014, Foreign Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that a reset of relations with the U.S. was "impossible", and that relations had been damaged by "destructive" and "stupid" Western sanctions. Going forward, what Secretary Clinton has thus far stated that the United States must work with Russia on issues of common interest whenever possible, like arms control, but also partner with allies to limit Russia’s transgressions when needed, as in Ukraine. The United States should Page 42 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
respond by strengthening the NATO alliance and improving the energy security of European states. At no time, has Secretary Clinton called for further economic sanctions and has made no reference to Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea. In sum, more than a Trump presidency, the Kremlin may simply be enjoying watching the myriad of problems unfold, many of which seem illusory at best, in the American presidential race. It is also likely that the propaganda war was not conceptualized to impact the American elections but, to serve as a subterfuge for the Kremlin’s aggressions in the European Union, most notably in Germany. Recently, I had the opportunity to interview an exceptional woman who overcame an obstacle that is extremely near and dear to my heart: bullying. Melissa Wilson, a survivor of bullying, turned the negative experiences she faced in middle school from peers into positive ones, and today, she is a successful and inspirational person! Currently, Melissa is the creator and host of the podcast, The Grass Gets Greener, and is an Associate Producer for the documentary film, Bullies and Friends. Melissa uses her past experiences, along with her background in psychology, to guide her in the work she does today. Her mission is to help those who feel stuck in life from past trauma, and assist them in leading an amazing life. Her story is one of sorrow and sadness, yet hope, and triumph. Page 48 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Tensie: Tell me about yourself. Melissa: I’m originally from Providence, Rhode Island where I spent the first 25 years of my life. I first left home to attend graduate school at Connecticut College. Two years later, after realizing that this wasn’t the professional path I wanted to pursue any longer, I went back into the workforce as a Research Assistant for The University of Rhode Island, while continuing to live in Connecticut. After spending two years there, I had the opportunity to pursue my own venture. I fumbled around for a little while trying to figure out what I wanted to do, and during this time I also got married. I came to realize that I wanted to use my past experience in some way to help others who were struggling with having been bullied just as I had struggled for so many years. I spent the next year or so learning as much as I could about how to Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
create a platform where I could do just this. In Spring 2014, I launched my blog, The Grass Gets Greener. Later that year, I released a podcast of the same name. Today, I’m living in Southern California where I spend my time as a podcaster, personal development coach for other bullying and childhood trauma survivors, and volunteer as an Associate Producer for the upcoming acclaimed documentary film on bullying and precedent setting bullycide court case, Bullies and Friends.
Tensie: Wow! You are very accomplished, and I love how you have a passion to help others, particularly those who are bullied. Why is this cause so important to you? Do you mind sharing your story? Melissa: I was 12 years old when my life got derailed. Due to the lack of quality Page 49 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
middle schools, I was enrolled into a Catholic school that was supposed to not only provide me with a good education, but also to protect me from the dangerous environment of a public school. Well, that’s not quite how it went. Instead, I found myself in an environment that was not welcoming of anyone new. Part of the issue was that I was entering a place where everyone already knew everyone. Except for me, that was. The bullying started on the very first day, and it didn’t end until I graduated two years later. I was bullied by every single classmate, and the teachers just let it happen. I don’t believe that everyone wanted to bully me, but it was either bully or be bullied. It happened during class, breaks, lunch, and gym. It was physical, emotional, and verbal. I was hit, things were thrown at me, spilled on me. I was called names and had rumors spread. Most significantly, I developed learned helplessness as a Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
result of all this. I felt like there was nothing I could do to escape it, and there was nothing I could do to stop it. I so badly wanted to fight back, but I had lost my will to do so. I wanted to reach out for help, but by the time I thought about doing that, I was already too paralyzed by shame and fear. Part of me hoped my mother would find out and do something about it, but part of me also hoped that my mother wouldn’t find out and do anything about it. It was a debilitating situation to be in, and it would set me up for many struggles for years to come. Even after I graduated and never had to see of any them again, I continued to suffer and punish myself for what had happened.

Tensie: How incredibly sad you were treated this way. Your story is similar to mine in that I, too, was emotionally, physically, and verbally bullied by students at school. Hearing you tell your story breaks my heart. You seem to be such a nice person. Why do you think students bullied you so badly and how did you deal with students’ mean behavior towards you? Melissa: The simplest explanation is that I was an easy target. I was an outsider, and I stuck out like a sore thumb. They knew I didn’t really belong there, even though one of the students had been a childhood friend. And I was uncomfortable from the beginning. Wearing a uniform and following strict orders just Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
wasn’t my style. But whatever my style was, it didn’t exist for much longer. I tried to be as conforming as I could in the hopes that it would protect me. It didn’t of course, and I got picked on for every little thing that was still uniquely me: if I wore my uniform slightly differently, if I had a bad hair day, if I had a pimple. It didn’t matter what it was. It was all fuel for the fire. I dealt with it the best way I knew how at the time. That meant that I kept it to myself and tried to keep anyone outside of school from finding out about it. I was so ashamed and embarrassed that I didn’t want anyone to know. I thought that if someone found out, they would make fun of me, too. I believed that the bullying was all my fault and everything that was said Page 51 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
about me, and that was a source of criticism, was true. I thought I was flawed. I no longer liked myself and began to see myself in the ways that those who bullied me saw me.
Tensie: I empathize with you. It is a shame that students treated you this way. Did the bullying affect your self-esteem? Melissa: Being bullied absolutely affected my self-esteem. Not only did I see myself as flawed, but I also felt like no one would be able to like me for who I was. This led me to shut down and shut everyone out. I got to a point where I no longer trusted anyone, either. I believed that everyone was a threat and would only end up hurting me. As a result, I continued to try my best to conform so that I could stand the best chance of having others approve of me. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
It’s interesting because even though I didn’t want to let anyone get close to me, I still wanted their approval. I was very sensitive to criticism. I was so ashamed of the person I was led to believe I was that I couldn’t put myself out there in any capacity. I stayed home, and I didn’t go out of my way to talk to others. I actually was able to do well academically in high school, and I felt good about my abilities in that regard, but overall, I was very guarded and didn’t have any close friends.
Tensie: I am glad you did well academically in high school, despite the way students treated you. It’s interesting how what other people think of us can greatly affect our self-esteem. How long did the bullying last? And did you tell teachers or administrators about what was transpiring? Melissa: The bullying lasted for two years in middle school. Luckily it didn’t continue into high school. This was thanks in part to the fact that I went to a different school from any of those who had bullied me. I was able to have a fresh start. I never told any of the teachers or administrators, but, they did seeit happening. The students in my class Page 52 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
used to snap elastic bands at me from across the room in front of the teacher and nothing was said about it. Another time, during recess, someone deliberately spilled a drink on me right in front of a teacher and nothing was done either. These situations were really upsetting to me because it sent me the message that I was all alone to deal with this and, no one cared enough about me to help.
Tensie: Thankfully, you overcame the bullying and are a successful woman today! Do you think the words from your bullies motivated you to prove them wrong? Melissa: Absolutely! One of my favorite sayings is, “The best revenge is a life well Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Human Rights lived.” I don’t think that I was always motivated this way, though. At first it was just about survival, but once I started healing and getting my life back on track, the motivation definitely followed. And when I first came across that saying, I knew that it would become a motto for my life.
WITHOUT Womens Rights
Tensie: Well said! Tell me more about your accomplishments and your podcast, The Grass Gets Greener. Melissa: It’s taken me a while to feel like I have accomplished anything significant because of how much being bullied set me back. That said, while I am proud of such things as graduating from college, traveling to Europe by myself, and becoming independent, I would say that my Page 53 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

greatest accomplishment to date has been creating a space through my podcast for other survivors of childhood traumas to share their stories and impact the lives of others who are still struggling. It never ceases to amaze me when I hear stories from the listeners of my podcast, or past guests, about how their lives have been impacted by one another. I am immensely grateful to have the privilege to serve others in this way, and while I desire to make even bigger impacts in the future, it is an accomplishment that I am proud of today. The Grass Gets Greener podcast is the show for survivors, by survivors. I began it almost two years ago in October 2014. Each week I’m joined by a survivor of childhood trauma or abuse, who shares their story of what they went through and how they’ve been able to get to a place today where they are not only surviving, but are thriving. In sharing their stories, they are able to provide hope and inspiration for those who are still struggling from whatever past trauma they’ve gone through.
Tensie: This is awesome! Kudos to you! You are doing such great work. How can people contact you or follow you on social media? Melissa: My information is as follows:

The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. It was established by Act of Congress in 2003, following decades of efforts to promote and highlight the contributions of African Americans. To date, the museum has collected more than 36,000 artifacts. Nearly 100,000 individuals have become charter members of the museum. When the NMAAHC opens on September 24, 2016, it will be the 19th and newest museum of the Smithsonian Institution. Page 58 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
There are four pillars upon which the NMAAHC stands: 1. It provides an opportunity for those who
are interested in African American culture to explore and revel in this history through interactive exhibitions; 2. It helps all Americans see how their stories, their histories, and their cultures are shaped and informed by global influences; 3. It explores what it means to be an American and share how American values like resiliency, optimism, and spirituality are reflected in African American history and culture; and 4. It serves as a place of collaboration that reaches beyond Washington to engage Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

The NMAAHC is a public institution open to all, where anyone is welcome to participate, collaborate, and learn more about African American history and culture. In the words of Lonnie G. Bunch III, founding director of the NMAAHC, “there are few things as powerful and as important as a people, as a nation that is steeped in its history.”

Out of concern, a white professor of Bond’s at the University suggested he change his career path and put aside his dream of becoming an architect one day. In a 2004 interview with the Washington Post, Bond recalled his professor saying, “There have never been any famous, prominent black architects… You’d be wise to choose another profession.” However, after spending a summer working for AfricanAmerican architect Paul Williams, Bond knew that he should continue following his dream and overcome racial stereotypes in the field.

Information Hoarding, Overload, DeCluttering, Searching & Finding

In America, we consume twice as many material goods as we did fifty years ago. “In America, we consume twice as many material goods as we did fifty years ago. Over the same period, the size of the average American home has nearly tripled, and today that average home contains about three hundred thousand items. On average, our homes contain more televisions than people. And the US Department of Energy reports that, due to clutter, 25 percent of people with two-care garages don’t have room to park cars inside and another 32% have room for only one vehicle. (…) And still one out of every ten American households rents off-site storage - the fastest-growing segment of the commercial real -estate industry over the past four decades.” Joshua Becker: The More of Less Page 66 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
The common tendency is that we all are hoarders. We buy, get, and own more and more stuff day by day. We hoard clothes, shoes, bags, drawings of our kids, postcards, mugs, jewelry, and much more. They take more and more space, but we don’t want to get rid of these things for several, mostly emotional reasons. And this tendency also goes beyond our homes and personal lives: we do the same thing at work as well. Besides the hoarding of physical goods, we also store more and more digital information, intentionally or not: e-mails, downloads, documents, presentations, pictures, charts, etc., thinking they’ll be useful “one day,” sometime in the future.
Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Of course, in many cases, it makes sense to store and keep these items, since they have real business value. But they become outdated and unnecessary more often than we realize. We have to face with one of the biggest challenges of the digital age: information overload.
Information Overload While working, we get more and more information each day. We also create more and more. It is unavoidable. It is a part of our everyday life. We not only have to store this huge volume of content, but also need to process everything: we have to understand, analyze, and work with. We have to respond, take actions, and make decisions. Page 67 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Statistics show that the average person today processes more information in a single day than a person in the 1500s did in an entire lifetime (before printing was invented). [Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ news/science/science-news/8316534/ Welcome-to-the-information-age-174newspapers-a-day.html]
Have you ever thought about the impacts of this? The volume of information gets especially crazy when we accumulate it within the organization over time. There are more and more enterprises with the challenge of having hundreds of millions(!) of documents, increasing every day, stored in many different systems. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Dealing with this amount of content is a real problem that creates a serious headache for many.
Information Hoarding Indeed, a big percentage of this information that you store and process is really useful. But at the same time, much of them are just waste. We tend to keep documents and e-mails not only because of their real business value, but because of we “like” them, or consider them to be “possibly relevant” in the future.
But the chance we never open these items again is actually very high. (I have to admit I am not an exception either.) Also, many documents become outdated over the time, and we don’t clean up. This massive information overload results in that finding the information we need to get our jobs done takes more and more time. Sometimes we cannot even find what we are looking for, and we re-create the same content, over and over again. This leads to more and more duplicated and multiplied content, and besides the find ability challenges we have to face with, it is also hard (or sometimes impossible) to decide which document is the most valid, up-to-date version.
These challenges all drive us to the conclusion: we need something that helps. The first thing to consider is de-cluttering. Identifying the clutter in your information inventory is not as easy as it might sound, though. Some techniques you can use:
Organize: Using folders in file structure, e-mails and other information management systems is evident, yet many of us don’t use its full potentials. We can create folders and subfolders, and organize our files and e -mails into these, to improve quick findability in the future. For example, you can order your e-mails into folders by customer, project, event, year, etc. It’s always up to your preferences, defined in advance. I have a separate folder for Events, where I add a sub-folder to each conference and workshop I speak or teach at. To keep it clean, I also created a sub-folder called “Past” for the events in the past.
I also have a separate folder for customer projects as well as community engagements. (Illustration A)
The result is more time spent with searching and less success with finding what we need.
Page 68 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Filter: Filtering for e-mails
Filter out: Similar to filtering
which you need to get a task done is a great feature most e-mail clients provide. You can do this in your file browser as well as in most content management system. For example, you can filter for particular persons in the From field, specific customer names or stock signs in the subject, attachments, etc. A great bonus is that you can save these filters for future use in most of the email clients.
for specific content, you can also filter out what you do not need. This might be a temporary filter, for your current needs, or you can permanently delete the items which are identified as clutter by these filters. For example, contracts that are older than five years, specific document formats like PDFs, or e-mails where the subject contains some specific keywords.
Tag: Simple and often under-
(Illustration A)
valued feature is to tag the emails and documents. While we can organize into one folder every item, unlimited number of tags can be used. Therefore we get more freedom for organizing and filtering.
Use automatic rules: Everything described above can be automated in most of the e-mail clients. You don’t need to select the same filter criteria again and again: save it and enjoy, anytime in the future. By using these tools, you make the first, very important step towards better organizing your digital assets. They help you to achieve better productivity.
Page 69 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
And they also help something “behind the scenes” you might have never considered so far: Search. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Search Applications I am sure you use Search every day. On the internet, Google and Bing are the big ones. If you look for books on Amazon, the interface you get is also search-driven. So is Yelp when it comes to restaurants. Or Expedia for travels. Probably you also have one or more search application(s) in your organization, which you can use to look for enterprise content such as customer agreements, payment history, product details, project information, financial charts, marketing campaigns, and much more. As a search expert, I can see though how everyone is struggling with understanding how these applications actually work. These search applications are like magic “black boxes.” And while it’s true we usually cannot have any impact on their work inside, we can do several things to improve the quality of results. First of all, let’s see what these engines can do to provide responses (results) to your questions (queries). Search is an action with the intent of getting relevant and useful content which helps you to get a particular task or job done. Search is usually initiated by some user interaction: in most cases, entering a query, choosing some filtering options, or navigating by a menu. Page 70 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Search can be intended for a single document or item, or a small set of documents. For example, looking for accommodation for your family vacation. Searching for the current lunch menu in your office’s cafeteria. Or gathering purchase history of a customer. Search also can be exploratory search when you want to explore the available options and collect the useful pieces for your current need. For example browsing a travel agency’s website, gathering ideas where to go for family vacation. Or overviewing the latest documents in your department, to get a sense what your colleagues have been working on recently. Behind the scenes, every search process is supported by a search engine. This is a Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
one which directly interacts with you, the user. When you enter your query on the user interface, select the desired option, or use the pre-defined filters to express what you are looking for, this component of the engine receives your query, tries to understand, analyzes, processes, then requests the desired items from the Search Index.
software or software package which receives your input (query), processes it and returns with the “responses” (search results), within a second. The results have to be reliable and relevant. There are several search engines, with different features and limitations, as well as different strengths and weaknesses. The goal of this series is to provide a general insight into what you can expect from various search applications - without diving into the deep technical details. To understand the basics, it’s enough to know that each search engine contains three main components: The first component is called Query Processor. This component is the Page 71 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Search Index is a huge store for everything that can be searchable by the system. The search engine doesn’t go directly to the myriads of information storing systems to collect what you need. Instead, it stores and maintains a special “inventory” which is called Search Index. This search index is responsible for storing what should be findable, and providing the relevant results when a query happens. How the content goes to the index is the responsibility of the third, Indexer component. Whenever you create new content in a system which is connected to search, the content gets noticed by the Indexer, then crawled and processed, and in the end, it will be stored in the Search Index. Same happens when you modify something that already has existed - the Indexer processes it, and then updates the proper entry or entries in the Search Index. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
It’s an interesting thing that many of us talk about SEO (”Search Engine Optimization”) when it comes to web content, but we don’t even consider that the same concept does exist in our organization as well. When we add a new blog post or article to our website, we try to optimize its metainformation, structure, keywords, and much more to make it have a higher Google position. But when it comes to internal documents in our office, we don’t really care. But we should! The techniques at the beginning of this article were introduced to be used to optimize content for your own use. But actually, these methods optimize content for findability as well. The better your content is, the better the search engine can work with it. It’s an easy win, isn’t it?

THE COGNAC SOAKED AROMA of Coq au Vin wafting from your stovetop are going to your head when all of a sudden, your culinary trance is interrupted by is a knock at the door. She’s here, it's her first date at your place and you’ve brazenly offered to whip up something delicious for her to lure her over to your lair. So far so good, you’ve done your due diligence by asking her what she likes to eat, what she likes to drink, you’ve even tuned in to her musical preferences. Being the clever sleuth that you are, you’ve taken the time to listen attentively to her responses and have even made mental notes on any additional clues she’s dropped about what delights her. You’re sure you haven’t missed a thing. The aroma of your daring culinary efforts and attention to detail will definitely not go unnoticed, women are very sensually stimulated and… hold on there, pardner, put down the toys! I’m simply talking about the moment your date crosses your threshold for the first time, she will have her guard up and whatever hits her olfactory glands first will tell her volumes. It’s natural instinct for a woman to be on the lookout for anything suspicious or potentially threatening. Much like a cat cautiously sniffing everything when she enters a new house, your date will be looking for reasons to bolt as she enters unfamiliar territory. It’s your job to help her feel safe, protected and secure. Your Coq au Vin will do much to alleviate her “doorstep doubts” but there's more to consider. Page 76 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

A woman’s olfactory glands are generally much more sensitive than a man’s. Like a fine French perfume “nose” or seasoned sommelier, her nose will detect the slightest nuances and can reveal volumes about you. The portion of women's brains that is devoted to scent detection is larger than that of men's. One theory is that women require a greater sense of smell for selecting a suitable mate. In other words, men can mate with many women and have children with each of them and have many offspring in a given time period. In contrast, women can only have one baby in a nine month time period so it makes sense for them to be more selective about their mate. Male scent may confer key data like testosterone levels (which can be desirable), and information about genetic compatibility or lack thereof via major Histo compatibility complex (MHC) genes. (1) While you may not be able to tell what your friends have been munching on, I know a gal or two who can easily detect when you’ve lunched on filet mignon before seeing her. One of my own dates was quite bewildered when I correctly guessed the label and year of chardonnay he’d been sipping earlier at a business lunch. Our sense of smell has been proven to create the strongest sense memory, indelibly cementing a moment in time with a particular scent and emotion.
Page 77 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Think of how you feel, besides hungry when you get a whiff of someone’s BBQ or campfire in passing. Puts you in another moment, doesn’t it? The object is to have your lady anchor your scent with a romantic, ‘scentsual’ experience. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
You know that old saying “I smell trouble”? Well, besides the aroma of a homemade meal you know she’ll love, here are three tips to avoid setting off one of her most powerful “trouble detectors” her nose:
You know that old saying “I smell trouble”?
Survey says that women prefer a recently showered man – clean is sexy. A bit of cologne is appealing, a light, fresh scent that will make her want to lean in closer for a sniff of your warm neck rather than back off for some fresh air. No doubt you’ve been bowled over at one point or another by a passerby’s perfume so obnoxiously foul that it could knock a buzzard off a garbage truck. Same thing but multiply that tenfold for her. The same goes for your breath. Meaning avoid not just the obvious – onions, garlic, salami, smoking, etc, that day and the day Page 78 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
before (it’s shocking – the afterlife of the aforementioned items). On the day of (prior to her arrival) also avoid beer, red wine, sugary foods, sodas strong cheeses and other pungent foods. Your breath should have her thinking, “hmm… I wonder if he’s a good kisser”, not “excuse me, I I think I forgot something on the stove!”. To a woman, bad breath is the death knell as far Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
chugged. Breath mints can temporarily mask things when in doubt, but don’t leave them in view. Women notice the details. They remember them. Take heart, the attention to detail you’ve demonstrated by creating a succulent, fragrant meal for her first date at your place will definitely not go unnoticed. She will appreciate all your hard work more than you know. If you want her leaning in close behind to get a peek at your skillet it’s equally important that you put the same effort into making sure you smell as delicious and tempting as your dinner. Who knows… your whipped cream, fresh berries and chocolate drizzle may end up somewhere entirely different than the intended dessert plates :-)
as smooching goes. Drinking plenty of water, about eight glasses a day will help flush toxins that can cause halitosis. Choose water over juices and flavored drinks to help meet the quota and keep your breath fresh. Caffeinated and alcoholic beverages don’t count, sorry, they’ll dehydrate you, negating all that water you just Page 79 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
By using the tidbits offered in this and my other posts to your advantage you’ll easily step into being the confident, irresistible gentleman you are. In the early 1900’s Fredrick Taylor created the notion that organizations should function like machines and that followers represented cogs in the machines. Cogs to be replaced when worn out or no longer of lasting value. Fast-forward to today and that notion of being expendable is still alive and well! Why? Because many traditional business schools still perpetuate that same
A New Breed of Follower Followers today prefer a more diplomatic and relational environment that fosters the ability to grow into a position while clearly offering alignment with the leader and the company’s mission and vision. Traditional business schools would balk at this description and roll their eyes at the notion of catering to followers over profits, but the research doesn’t lie as you can see in this Harvard Business Review Article. Followers have a strong desire to follow as much as a leader has a strong desire to lead depending upon the situation and context.
The Leader Needs to Grow Too
idea of a mechanistic approach to leadership. However, much has changed, most notably, today’s followers and their preferences for leadership styles.
Page 84 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
I have to admit in my early years of leading, I was often trying to find my way when interacting with followers and was driven more by what I thought a leader should look and act like, rather than what best served the follower. It wasn’t until I began to see the tremendous capacity for influence upon others that I began to understand the importance of developing my own leadership philosophy. You see, I understood that my philosophy could be informed by the examples of others, the theories I researched and my own personal experiences, however, it became clear to me that the true test would be found in Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
developing my own perspectives on leadership behaviors through experience. I use the word test because it would involve risks associated with leading well or failing miserably when I interacted with my followers. For that reason, I began to think deeply concerning my own values and what I hold dear or what I regard with disdain in terms of leader behaviors.
Developing a Leadership Philosophy That being shared, my own personal philosophy of leadership is still evolving based upon situational
occurrences with followers and my faith. However, there are certain values and beliefs that must be present when formulating my leadership style preferences. These values include, but are not limited to the presence of what I call, “Relationship Cultivation” or the belief that followers should be first over the company’s bottom line profits. I share this with you today, because it is Page 85 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
my strong belief that a leader should develop both a servant mentality and a high level of ethics in order to foster a well rounded and healthy leadership philosophy. The servant leader embodies many of these "Relationship Cultivation" characteristics and seeks to serve followers as they grow and develop.
A Leadership Path Forward How can leaders destroy this myth that followers are expendable and should be replaced at the very first sign of trouble?
At a very practical level, leaders can be the catalyst in their respective organizations by fostering an organizational culture of hope that creates more followers who are actively engaged and bought into the Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
companies. This is a core concept of my high value I Speak Life Academy Private Coaching™ program. When followers are bought into the culture and mission and vision of the organization, they are more likely to be productive which creates a self -fulfilling prophecy of the company being more profitable and successful in both the short and long-term. The Case for Hope as a Catalyst So, what is this ethereal thing called hope and how can it be the catalyst for creating an organizational environment where employees are valued in a significant way? The positive psychological constructs of hope can be defined as a process or endeavor to think about one’s goals and the motivation to take action to achieve them. The Positive Psychology literature reveals this as an overall process that requires two components of goaldirected thought…“agency and pathway.” Agency and Pathway Thinking Agency thinking is the ability of an individual to compartmentalize their actions, behaviors and desired path forward with a strategic way of thinking to overcome a Page 86 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
problem or achieve a certain level of success. While pathway is the concrete plan to take action on the necessary steps to bring that agency thinking to life. When you have agency thinking and the necessary pathway, hope becomes manifest and is birthed forward. So, you see when a leader creates a culture of hope by deputizing followers and mobilizing their followers own internal resources, they have become valued and actualized members of the organization who have a stake in the
overall functioning and long-term success. In today’s society, with an unstable job market and an up and down economy there has never been a greater need for followers to hold on to hope regarding their work contexts. Furthermore, a work environment built upon hope provides a roadmap for a follower to realize internal desires to achieve goals and reach success and selfactualization. For example, while two Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
followers may have similar natural abilities and talent, the more hopeful one is likely to be more successful, especially in moments of stress in a workplace context. In other words, a followers hopeful thoughts reflect the belief that one can find pathways to desired goals and become motivated to use those pathways, which impacts the well -being and overall success of their particular situation. Therefore through a leaders cultivation of hope, they not only assign a high value to their followers, but they create a lasting legacy of influence.
framework for followers to understand how they too should engage one another. Followers who then engage hope and then enact hope in their broader organizational cultural context create a positive movement for existing employees and other followers who may be on boarded to the organization as well. How? In this Harvard Business Review Article the impact of a leaders actions is explored even further. Make no mistake, followers will either rise to the occasion to be successful or remain low, dependent upon how they are perceived and treated by the leader. In my free Pillars of Success Course, key behavioral characteristics are revealed that point to what both leaders and followers can do to best position themselves to rise rather than remain low. At the end of the day and in my estimation, the true measure of a leader’s impact is found in the health and productivity of his or her followers. Are they fulfilled, healthy and productive? If so, then the leader is on to something special and it should be cultivated, celebrated and modeled for others to see. After all, if you have something of value, shouldn’t it be shared with others?
Hope is Contagious What is the impact of a leader that instills hope in their followers over the long-term? The impact is tremendous. When a leader creates a regular atmosphere of hope through their actions and communication style, they are intentionally creating a

The "Romance scam" is a kind of fraud that can yield one of the highest possible returns. It is also one of the subtlest forms of scam and one of the most serious and despicable. In addition to ruin people financially, it can also leave them psychologically shattered. In 2015 alone “IC3 received over 8,000 complaints related to these threats with a combined reported loss of nearly $ 203,390,531 .” The proportion of women over the total number of people that are scammed this way is about 82% in the US. This is the population that I will be focusing on. These figures should have already been declining drastically, considering the conspicuous amount of information on this issue available both on the Internet and through the FBI. On the contrary, this plague is expanding like wildfire in all Western countries, continuing to claim victims even in the first areas that were traditionally targeted such as the US and the UK. Believing that only ingenuous women are prey of those sharks is wrong.
police the hell they have gone through. It is indeed easy to judge, but I can assure you it is also wrong. Some scammers are masterful at the wicked art of hoodwinking people and until you end up in their net it is difficult to understand.
Victimology of a Romance This type of fraud is enacted by giving the victim the illusion of having found their soulmate, which is the dream of many women, but the reality of few. Dream is the keyword here. Most single women who want to fall in love generally have a clear idea of how her ideal partner should be, often in great detail. In fact, the desire to find their significant other is for some so strong that just a photo of a handsome person and the courting worth of a romantic film will be enough to make them believe to have found them, even if the the match with their ideal is loose. And that's when they actually fall for a scam.
The victims often have a good education and career, especially those who do not have time to socialize because of their work. Frequently, fearing to be judged and being ashamed of having been cheated, they do not report to the Page 92 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Falling in love, as we all know, it is not something rational. One can fall in love with someone without having anything in common. The physical attraction involves several factors: the look, the smile, the facial expressions, the way of speaking, gesturing, walking, the personality, the charm, the smell. The attraction produces dopamine, according to scientists, and makes lovers dependent on each other. During this period, the person in love does often not discuss of subjects that could induce their partner to think that the two are not meant for each other, for fear of losing their beloved. When they actually lose that person, they suffer from dopamine withdrawal and they look for another partner to compensate. That's when they are most vulnerable. Even more so, many couples get married without having ever discussed how their life
together will be, how they will raise their children or how they will manage their finances. They are convinced that thanks to their love they will find a solution to everything. Often the awakening comes too late when they go to live under the same roof. This kind of people does not need a scammer to deceive them. They tend to do that themselves. Imagine when a woman of those gets caught in the net of a scammer who nurtures her fantasies, how easy it is for them to get what they want. What surfaces by many reports of victims is that all women had remained fascinated by the courting and agreed that the period in which they were being scammed had been the most beautiful of their lives. In most of them also a strong sense of guilt arises once the deception is discovered. Guilt is typical of many victims, even if that is completely unwarranted. Yet, when a relationship comes to an end, looking back we often realize that we should have called a halt much earlier. If we didn't, it was because we felt somewhat dependent. I was impressed by a victim's account stating that "in bars there aren't men who court you" and that even if cheated it was worth it in a sense to experience certain emotions. I was wondering if this revelation by this woman was nothing else that the same sense of guilt that others had felt, after they realized at some point that their relationship was not real, but they kept pursuing it not to lose the illusion of being

happy. Breaking up would have meant being alone again and having to find another soulmate. Many already know the difficulty of finding one in a lifetime.
Profiling a Scammer Statistically most online scams are run from West Africa with a good prevalence of Nigerians and Ghanaians. However, given the success rate of this fraud, scammers from other countries have built their own operations. It is also noteworthy that many of them have studied in the West thanks to scholarships and upon return to their home they found it more lucrative to scam people than to do something good for their countries. They speak and write good English and are familiar with the culture and customs of their targets, so as to be able to pass themselves off as Westerners without troubles. The nationality with which they introduce themselves to their victims depends on the country where they lived. It could be the US, the UK or another European country. However, most scammers have never been to the US and what they have learned comes from the movies and the Internet. Those are the ones that are often easier to recognize. For example, when the scammer who has not lived in the US says to the victim to have graduated from Georgetown Page 95 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
University, it is enough to go a little bit more into that topic and the scammer will start to stall to avoid the subject. In fact, no matter how much information they can collect, there is a chance in a million that they can learn about all aspects of the life of an American campus if they never set foot inside one. However, beware of those who have really lived there. Sometimes, they have a whole team following several victims, while they give directions and help to answer questions, but not immediately. If one had to rely only on grammar or spelling mistakes to assess whether the man they met online is genuine, it would be easy to cross out some real good and honest candidates. However, when someone uses Google translator while trying to pass for an American or a British, then there should be no doubts. Since not for all women it is easy to recognize a scammer, I set for myself the goal to provide some more practical information about them. Reading through the studies done in the field of romance scam in the US, Australia and EU, I realized that they were all essentially based on the accounts of the victims. Yet, to study and to analyze the experience of someones else, especially if they are emotionally involved, doesn't tell the whole picture and certainly it has nothing to do with feeling it on your own skin. It seemed obvious that I could not really allow them to scam me for real, but I could Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
go very close. I just had to find a scammer and make him confident that I believed everything they said to me. Judging by the amount of women who fall into this trap, I thought it would have been an easy task to find my “scammy love”. As absurd as it may sound, though, I could not find one at first.
Seeking My Beloved Scammer After setting up two profiles on two different sites without pictures, I received contact requests,
Page 96 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

but no scams. Therefore, I opted to take a photo of me from afar wearing sunglasses, so that I could not be recognized. I published the picture on a very wellestablished website. I received about 200 visits in one week, but still no scams. There was something in my profile that attracted men who were looking for a woman, but that wasn't appealing to scammers. Why? So, I went on and read what was in the profiles of women in their 40s and 50s. I discovered that from mine it was not evident at all that I was looking for my soulmate. My low level of romance wasn't helping me either. I described myself for what I was in reality. Determined, pragmatic, independent, balanced. It was like telling the scam: stay away from me, you
will waste your time, you will never convince me with your lies, I will I get along just fine without a man. So, I changed my tune and this is part of my adjusted description: “I want what we all think we want. To love & be loved- fiercely. To skydive, free fall into trust.. With laughter. The sobbing kind, & hot, fearless loving. I want days in bed, & nights out, walking, talking, laughing, hands held - joyous & grave, whatever it takes & afternoons spent exploring all of the above. My life is rich, this is a fabulous time. I'd like to share that with someone confident enough not to be dazzled by my world. Beauty, success are not better, simply different. But it takes a certain kind of man, a man confident in his own self, not to feel undermined by mine. My ideal man would be tall, self assured, calm, with a good sense of humor. He would need to be a truthful man, with grounded values and a love of all people. And not too grown up, please. An optimist, please. The sun can't always be shining, but when you are with someone you love, who cares !!
Results: 3478 visits in about 12 days and hundreds of messages. I could not talk to everyone, there were too many. But how was I to figure out who was a scammer without talking? I knew that they use pictures of attractive men, they say they do not smoke. They pretend to be Christians, widowed or Page 97 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

divorced and to have at least one child of whom they are solely responsible. Other common misrepresentations are those of being graduates, professionals and enjoying a good financial situation. At this point, I took an educated guess and I excluded all the men who did not say to have all those features. Exactly 9 remained, all attractive. 2 of them were true, 7 were scams. I gave them exactly what they were looking for: a DREAMER. Romance is for them the first sign that a woman can be a good prey.
Throwing the Hook I replied to all 7, but I received a response from only 1. Incredibly, most of them had already been deleted from the site as "inappropriate profiles". For fear of losing the only one I had left, I immediately accepted his proposal to write to each other in private. Immediately after that, also his profile disappeared, but it was him who had deleted it. I was eager to know if I was on the right track, as I thought. At this point, I just had to let them scam me. Finally my "romance" was about to begin and like a flood it overwhelmed me... Keep reading about my investigation on next month's issue. You won't be disappointed. Creating your Own Authenticity Every woman living has to create her own authenticity;
there are no road maps for us because our mothers and grandmothers were living in a culture where their options for authenticity were limited. Life has not just happened to us the way it might have happened to our mothers and grandmothers and greatgrandmothers.

We are among some of the first women to have the opportunity to live a considered life rather than one that just happens to us. It is important to note that we have made choices of our lives that have led us to be part of this transitional experience of being women.
As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “we are the sum total of the choices we have made. And, we can begin to make a choice to redesign our lives in ways that work as women power brokers. We can learn a lot by watching other women engaging in trial and error as they invent their lives. A lot of us have watched other women and made decisions Page 102 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
that we wanted to live our lives differently, and there are some of us that realized that working for ourselves was more authentic and more fun. And many of us are finding ways still to express our authenticity in a corporate environment. Realizing that I had a desire for change and compassion for especially women, I quickly surmised that my joy was in helping women to transform their lives for greater success. This vision led me to develop “Personal Best” Success Life Growth and Development Seminars for women, which I conducted for 9 years and throughout the continent of Africa and in California where I implemented both Leadership Retreats for corporate men and Life Growth and Development Seminars for women. awakening (and I was in corporate life at the time and at the top of my game), I was inspired and moved by God in 2000 to “recareer” (His suggested term) and leave my corporate job in higher education. In 2003, He led me to step out on “faith” and with $5,000 and a “dream” I started my own company, which I named Young Enterprises because at the time I could not think of some “sexy” provocative name for the business and I started the journey to become a woman power broker. Today, we will cover the ten secrets of successful women power brokers in this country, and how you can use these secrets to spur you to re-ignite your vision for more success. Like everyone, you have desires, dreams, talents, and gifts that God has given you to use and make this world a better place.
Women’s Power Brokers I have been fascinated for years about why some people are able to take a little bit of information and turn their lives around, while others, armed with the same tools, change nothing. I found the answer to be very simple – ACTION! Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Successful women and men state they put their thoughts, dreams, and plans into action instead of passively waiting for things to change! So, stop considering all the angles, the negatives, what people may say to you, weighing the pros and cons and just go do it. Without ACTION there is no change. Without change, there is no excitement. Without excitement, life becomes dull, boring and monotonous. Move forward and just do it. Research shows the most expedient way to change how you think or feel about something is to take action. Once you do something about your situation, you will begin to see results. So put on a smiling face. Simulate optimism and outgoingness. Remember, going through the motions can trigger the emotions. Opportunities never come to those who wait; those who take action and dare to change capture them!
The following are five (5) qualities of women power brokers. 1. A Woman Power Broker takes care of herself – able to maintain a heartfelt, handholding relationship with herself, while going through something that Page 104 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
is challenging, confronting, difficult or painful. She has compassion for herself when she is going through the hard part. She is resilient – can put her hand over her heart and ask, “What’s right for me?” 2. A Woman Power Broker communicates her needs to others and sets boundaries that are healthy for her. She allows herself to remain soft and tender because she knows there is strength in tenderness. She recognizes the power in her ability to be compassionate, to forgive, to be grateful, to be generous and to be moved and inspired.

The problem with modern dietary research is that it is so often wrong and contradictory. And the myths generated from them do so much more damage than the original problem. Part of the reason why this happens is due to reductionist thinking. Reductionist thinking takes a complex problem and reduces the answer to its most simplest elements. Which by the way usually misses Page 110 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
mistakes in treatment because there is simply too much guesswork. People today are sicker than they were 40 years ago when the research about the connection between fat and heart disease first came out.
The History of a Big FAT Lie In 1955 at the World Health Organization in Geneva, a very influential researcher named Ancel Keys offered his “lipid hypothesis.” He claimed that dietary fat raised cholesterol, which subsequently increased the rate of heart disease. The American Heart Association immediately Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Nina Teicholz, an investigative journalist, wrote a book called The Big Fat Surprise in 2014. She dove into the world of fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and heart disease and found very little connection between dietary fats, including saturated fats and the onset of heart disease. But she did find a link between artificially hydrogenated (trans) fats such as margarines and heart disease. Remember how they told you to switch from butter to margarine?
butter to margarine? jumped in and embraced his hypothesis, warning that butter, eggs, meat, and other saturated fat-rich foods contributed to heart disease. They began to pitch a low-fat diet to prevent it. At the time, heart disease was rising and they didn’t know why. They thought this was the answer. At first he claimed that all dietary fat was dangerous. Later in 1970, with his Seven Countries Study, he reported that the fats that posed the most danger were saturated fats (from animals). He said that unsaturated fat in vegetable oils could benefit health. Since then, there have been many studies that have debunked the lipid hypothesis. Page 111 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Yet, many conventional dieticians, nutritionists and especially MDs still hold on to this fallacy. Your medical doctor is very likely still prescribing statin drugs like Lipitor for lowering high cholesterol levels. You should note that statin drugs are the biggest money maker of all pharmaceutical drugs, to the tune of $100 BILLION. Other Ways to Look at the Problem There’s an old adage: One man’s meat is another man’s poison. Dr. Peter D’Adamo ND introduced to the world in the mid 1990s a groundbreaking idea that we are greatly influenced by our individual blood types. We should not blindly adop one-size-fits-all-diets. I was a practicing professional engineer when I first heard of Dr. D’Adamo’s book Eat Right For Your Blood Type. I had some mysterious symptoms, including Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
painful joints. A friend and colleague who was a blood type O vegan, told me about the book and how it was helping her to REGAIN her health. As a blood type O she was supposed to eat red meat. Intrigued I bought the book and absorbed the premise that our blood types have a huge influence on our diet, our body type, our personality, our response to stress and even the type of exercise we should do.
Fats direct nutrients to the nervous system.
After reading the book, I made a cold -turkey decision. I got rid of the foods that weren’t good for us. But I also found out that because we were in a mixed blood type family, that it would take a bit more planning. No matter I was up to it. I am a blood type A. My husband is a blood type O. My sons are also split this way. In short, blood type O’s (and B’s) require red meat and therefore saturated fats to keep healthy AND thin. They have an ample amount of stomach acid to digest red meat. You don’t need a lot of protein, just a few ounces every day.
do much BETTER with plant proteins, chicken and fish. The low fat diet prescribed to prevent heart disease is perfect for the Blood type A person. It was Dr. D’adamo’s father, also an ND, who wondered why the same low fat diet did wonders for some people, but made other people worse. Now we know why. In my practice I use the Blood Type Diet along with Chinese Dietary Therapy, which really makes food a very powerful and customized healing tool.
Benefits of High Cholesterol
There is NO proof that high cholesterol causes heart disease but there is plenty of proof that low Blood type A’s on the other hand, don’t cholesterol makes you sick. 8. Fatty plaque buildup in the arteries is due, in part, to low levels of sunlight and Vitamin D. 9. The body considers cholesterol a desirable substance and recycles about 50% of it from bile fluids. 10.Vascular walls become weakened or brittle, and susceptible to cracking and leakage if the body is deficient in the full spectrum of 70+ minerals required for optimal health From a Chinese Medicine perspective, fats create a sense of security, heaviness and a grounding effect. Grounding
is important because it gives you a sense of stability in your body and in your life. 1. Old people with high cholesterol live longer. 2. High cholesterol protects against infectious disease. 3. People with lower cholesterol tend to suffer from more respiratory allergies, such as hay fever and asthmatic attacks. 4. Higher cholesterol levels seem to encourage more muscle gain when exercising. 5. Total Cholesterol levels below 200 lead to emotional instability, low self-control, aggression, violence, & suicide. 6. Plaque buildup in the arteries (atherosclerosis) is not caused by fatty foods. 7. Diet contributes only to 15% of total body cholesterol. 85% is manufactured by the body. Fats build body tissues. Fats help the body metabolize fluid better. This means that the body is able to distribute and use fluids more efficiently, thus reducing swelling and bloating. Fats transform into energy and warmth. It’s the most efficient way to store energy in our bodies. Fats direct nutrients to the nervous system. We need fats so that our nerves and brains function properly. We need fats to have beautiful plump skin. When I see women with ultra dry brittle hair and wrinkled, crinkly skin, I know that they’ve been on a low fat diet for an extended time. Ask yourself this question and be honest while answering, “Do I really feel and look at the best level of health that I can be?” Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Fat Becomes Body Amour Even vegetarians get overweight. You’ve heard all the conventional reasons for putting on weight – it’s usually due to poor diet choices, too little or no exercise, and too much high calorie alcoholic drinks. Or it’s just because you’re getting “old”. On the one hand you can’t neglect your diet. But there are MORE overweight and obese people precisely due to the low -fat and high-carbohydrate diets that people have adopted. These meals are much less satisfying, so there’s a lot more eating during a meal. When the stomach is full, it signals to your brain to tell you to stop eating. You’re satisfied.
Fat makes meals more satisfying QUICKER and therefore you find yourself full sooner and then you STOP eating!
Fat makes meals more satisfying QUICKER and therefore you find yourself full sooner and then you STOP eating! I found in my work with helping people to lose weight that the more they felt in control of their lives the more they felt in CONTROL of their body and therefore weight. I found that large people are very sensitive. They either felt hurt very deeply sometime earlier in life or they were left in situations that made them feel highly unprotected and exposed. Their reaction was to wrap themselves with a fat, protective layer. Page 114 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Case 1, middle-aged woman, mother of 3. She had been large all her life for her short frame. When her husband divorced her during his mid-life crisis, she started to put on even more weight until she came to me for help. Putting her on a different diet and treating her with acupuncture certainly helped to give her more energy and lose weight. But the empowerment coaching really helped her to make decisions in her life. She changed her mind. And with it, her body changed too. The pounds came off and for the first time in her adult life, she was smaller than she’d ever been. All because she began to feel powerful about her abilities, she shed her armour. What You Can Do Here are some simple changes you can make: 1. Whole foods are the order of the day for all. You get all the necessary nutrients including your fats without too much fuss and guesswork. Make a commitment to your health by eating well. 2. If you’ve been faithfully on low-fat diets, add something with saturated fats in each meal so that you feel full and eat LESS. 3. Refrain from drinking or gulping down copious amounts of liquids with your Page 115 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
meals. It dilutes stomach acid, which makes digestion very inefficient and ineffective. 4. For red meat eaters, you’re already doing this. However unless you’re a professional (full time) athlete you need just 2 – 4 ounces if you’re a female, 4 – 6 ounces if you’re male. You may consume meats up to 7 meals per week. 5. For vegetarians, definitely add eggs and cheeses to your diet. 6. For vegans, there’s not a lot of choice in plant foods. Peanuts are your only choice of safe fats and according to the Blood Type Diet, blood type A is the one who can easily eat them! 7. If you follow a blood type diet religiously, then you can choose the correct foods that really are right for you. 8. I highly recommend simple food combining. Having too many food groups in the meal gives you a full feeling, but it’s a bloated feeling which means that you’re not digesting well. 9. I suggest eating lots of green leafy vegetables with a small amount of protein. The leafy green vegetables, especially kale, collard greens, and baby salad green, arugula provide enzymes to help you digest proteins. Or you can also eat these vegetables with whole grains. 10.When you’re eating out, do what I do. I nix the carbohydrate, such as white rice or potatoes. I’m often offered a double portion of vegetables along with the portion of meat. I always say yes! You’ll find in no time that you can fit back into those skinny jeans! Why We Need More Women Directors In Hollywood! The first in the new series by 360 Karma
I recently had the honor of being interviewed on USC TV (University of Southern California) by young women of the school aspiring to be involved in television and media as producers, directors, and other positions in the industry. As you probably know, Hollywood is still an old boys club, and it is difficult for a woman to get ahead. For instance, it was brought to my attention that Fox and Paramount have about 50 movies slated for the next couple of years and none of them have a female director. That’s right- 100% male directors. Hard to believe in this day and age, isn’t it? The problem with this scenario is not only the injustice of it- but that it truly affects the quality of the films to be missing all the qualities that a female perspective brings to the table. Where research show men are decisive, analytical, and aggressive- women Page 118 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
on the other had are more collaborative, patient, and passionate. It is important to have both at the decision making table in the movie industry and in any industry. The 360 Karma endeavor is to nurture the idea of women helping women to lift them into more positions of influence. This is so important to impact the world is a positive way. I really enjoyed the experience and their exuberance about my career in film. I loved their questions about who I admired, and how I accomplished my documentary film projects, and what my advice I had for them. I mean, who doesn’t like that advice question- really?! Lol I hope that by doing this interview I impacted some of these young ladies to follow their dream, their calling , their legacy to be a creator of extraordinary films and television. The Cost of doing Business in America “Thieves in the land of milk and honey,” By Demetrius Mitchell
Page 121 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Credit and finance companies do not afford the average citizen the same type of leisure when settling debt.
“Thieves in the land of milk and honey,” is a common point of view among average, Wage earning. Americans. Wall Street criminals represent a fairly identifiable character from pop culture; some would even consider them an icon. Although the average American would not agree with someone stealing another person's hard earned money, someone stealing from a conglomerate induces the Robin Hood effect. People feel this is fair because these Fortune 500 corporations exploit the environment and use loopholes in tax law to elude paying taxes. Not only do these companies pay no income tax, but according to multiple financial surveys and federal census the average time it takes a big company to pay back suppliers is around 280 days. Credit and finance companies do not afford the average citizen the same type of leisure when Page 122 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
settling debt. These companies market themselves as an American business with an international reach and commercial material is pumped into the everyday life of anyone watching TV, using the internet, or listening to the radio. Information from focus group studies is used to reach the conclaves pitted throughout the American populace. There's a commercial for various urban demographics, likewise for the rural demographics. For example, safe, fuel efficient automobiles are marketed to “Soccer Moms,” represented by middle class white women with kids while luxury SUVs are marketed to those driven by success. Promotional material is designed to reach each type of identifiable demographic in an “easy to swallow” pill of injustice. They scream “Here We Are!” an American company owned and operated by Americans, to not only provide the highest quality product or service, but to make the average citizen's daily life better. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Marketing material is designed to be overtly American using national and religious holidays to amplify the significance of the promotion. Junk mail has been an annoying part of American life since the 1940s. During the 1940s people had the option to read or discard promotional material but in today's media outlets ads, pop ups, and billboards are impossible to avoid. Product information invades our intellectual space with little to no regard for peace of mind. The distraction is overlooked because the common belief was that patronizing these companies was essential to a healthy American economy. Maybe in the 1940s this was true with the Made In America stamp acting as a bonafide seal of approval. Nations from around the globe used these markings to define the highest quality product: American products. The idea that these companies were critical to maintaining America's infrastructure through our tax Page 123 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
system was implied. As a society, Americans wondered if they could maintain a healthy economy with a strong infrastructure if they did not participate in strengthening the legacy of these companies. Roads, schools, police and fire stations, jails, hospitals and more were seen as the products of a functioning tax system. After speaking to
international suppliers, it was discovered that they believe the fall in demand for American products is due to the absence of the “Made in America” branding associated with quality products. Instead “American products” are tagged with a “Made in China” brand, which means it’s affordable, available and cheap. Along with the politics, unfair labor laws, and pollution it makes for far less desirable implications. Developing nations savvy to these opportunities will benefit in the short term. Complete or raw product material is being outsourced from the United States as business culture teaches “cheaper” is better. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Greed is the driving force for foreign companies providing services and products to Americans. Pure unadulterated greed weeds out budget glitches and sterilizes risks to a highly predictable algebraic equation. Statistical anomalies are calculated and countered to satisfy investors while product development is seen as a risk factor. Instead of innovating the goal became maintaining a steady growth rate, increasing executive pay to record rates. During a key moment in the housing market, the bubble burst and rising fuel costs caused executive pay to rise almost 30% while the rest of the country suffered in the worst recession since The Great Depression. Banks, financial institutions, and brokerage firms began to collapse under the weight of predatory lending. Confidence in the American market further waned, causing a steep drop in consumer spending. As the spending habits in America mirrored the ills of the economy, companies were cutting overhead at any cost. For the last 30 years the United States has steadily increased its dependence on foreign production. As each wave of growth and recession splashes against the sands of progress, outsourcing becomes an increasingly acceptable technique for managing risk. Corporate dogma and the false security of Wall Street statistics remains the Page 124 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
active ingredient in risk management. The relatively small sect of the American public actively participating in the stock exchange may benefit from such practices but the loss of employment opportunity weakens the economy at large. American companies are increasingly becoming less American, not naturally, but to benefit the stock box score. Globalization has always been a staple of the American economy but paying for the resources and labor is not part of the original formula. Changing these fundamental properties Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

calls for other changes to maintain an acceptable profit margin. This balancing act continues to affect the flow of the economic resources in the United States. New marketing, pricing, and advertising strategies began to populate the business world. As time goes on, Americans make strides in social justice and equality. Social awareness movements became the crushing weight upon the shoulders of the wealthy. Actually paying employees and buying resources eventually lead to the excessive outsourcing we observe in today’s market. The objective is to get the product out Page 125 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
cheaper but as the price steadily increases, to counter the increase in the price of living, which affects employee compensation. In a country economically dominated by the top 1% of the population this represents a great injustice.
Americans are the world’s greatest consumer of goods. Consumers control the market through the trends affecting supply and demand sequences. Stock market statistics further blur the lines by projecting results and trends before they happen. Satisfying the shareholders becomes key, not the health of the company or how such health affects the remaining market. Market health trumps company health, promoting a misleading picture of the economy at large. The simple truth is that the economic health of each individual person represents the most valuable property of the economy. If the buying population begins to suffer they spend less so the companies counter by cutting operating cost. Risk management and cost cutting strategies has become its own industry. These guys come up with ways to cut costs at any means which doesn’t always end well for the employee or customer. Unlike other business principles the paying of taxes is the cost of doing business in America. manufacturing became the quick fix solution, especially for large companies. Paying taxes became a risk factor to be calculated out of the bottom line within the downsizing cycle. Paying taxes was no longer considered an American duty to keep the country strong but rather an element of business. Unlike other business principles the paying of taxes is the cost of doing business in America. Preserving public interest is fundamental to the market. If 1% of the population controls over 90% of wealth but pays a lower tax rate than the remaining population the product and worker suffer. Education, public health, and municipal infrastructure survive on paid taxes. Therefore tax avoidance is simply not good for America. Page 127 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Increasing potential customers’ quality of life should be a top concern for large companies. A better educated, motivated populace would require a higher pay than their foreign counterparts but they spend a lot more. The pure speed at which American trends flow drives consumer spending, basically meaning: people want new stuff. If the largest consumer begins to spend less the market suffers greatly due to lack of volume. Reconditioning shrinking resources only holds off the pending decline in profits. If there are no customers to buy products how can the business stay in the green? Stabilizing the condition of the consumer should be a top priority to business leadership but remains a problem in the midst of the market jungle. Municipal systems build, curve and create Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
opportunities that are essential to the success of future customers. Investing in the youth especially benefits future corporate interests. The issue is that shareholders and executives alike thirst for the immediate turnaround to protect their investment and lower the risk factors. Rarely do C Level executives factor the long term effects on society exposed to unfair business tactics. Cheap labor equals a cheap product, which usually doesn’t build a healthy rapport with the client. Although paying an employee more will seem to lower profits it creates a better product which will cost more to make a sell at a higher price. As products become cheaper and lower in quality, what will confine the limits of such a downturn? American companies are building infrastructure in other countries to fight certain risk factors, regulation and taxes. Employment opportunities previously offered by a particular company are now overseas, but the market is in the United States. Diversifying company operations by outsourcing labor and resources allows the company to claim they are an international organization. Not identifying as an American company shields companies from feeling the pressure of having to participate in the maintenance of the market and the American economy.
Large companies should consider the benefits of gaining local grassroots support to boost customer loyalty.
Page 128 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Imagine working in a building collectively owned by you and your neighbors. This building, during the day, is used by various shop owners and merchants to sell their products. Imagine you bought items every day from one of these merchants who didn’t have to pay a fee to do business. This doesn’t seem like such a big deal until you consider the maintenance of the facility. If every person that works in the building contributes to the upkeep but the general manager is the only person receiving the benefits, how is this fair? The general manager represents the political process that allows Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
these companies to avoid paying taxes. Roads, bridges, interstate freeways, waste management and product regulations suffer when tax revenue wanes. Raising tax and/ or interest rates on the general public does little to supplement lost corporate tax revenue. A well armed army of tax lawyers and compromised politicians protect the 1%’s right to not pay any taxes. This tradition is the fundamental property of the American way. How can a company operate freely within a marketplace without helping maintain the condition of the market? Greed. Generational wealth has no country, Page 129 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
therefore no loyalty to the rules of any regulatory system. Circumventing these national systems eventually corrupts economic stability. Infrastructure will decrease to a lower operating standard; will crumble everything from schools to roads. Unlike any other populace in the world America’s consumer spending is essential to the success of “American” companies. If Americans were paid 30% higher wages they would essentially spend 20% more in expendable income. Large companies should consider the benefits of gaining local grassroots support to boost customer loyalty. People are creatures of habit. If the proper incentives are available Americans will spend as much as possible because that is our nature. People living below the poverty line will still purchase a luxury product driven by pure impulse. Families earning a decent wage push the limits of their budget to maintain a certain lifestyle defined by culture, style, and trends. In the mid 1990’s the SUV craze hit the United States with no regard for gas prices or interest rates. This trend continues in today’s economy, pushing luxury automakers to enter and dominate the direction of the market. The simple fact is that the average person who purchases one of these Uber luxurious SUVs will hardly, if ever, drive on an unpaved road. SUVs represent a trend that defines a person’s status from the suburbs to the inner city. This is the gift of having the trendsetting power of the American consumer, so why not empower this consumer base? Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
The price of doing business in America is owed to the people, for relentlessly buying everything that hits the shelf. When companies resist paying into the system at large they essentially weaken the consumer base, effectively cutting the opportunities available to the people most important to the system: the buyers. The issue, as mention before, is greed; the gross overreach to guarantee the stream of revenue by superseding natural risks and anomalies. As corporate strategists go down the rabbit hole of dash and cut the road becomes ever more finite. The system can only implode given this pattern of use. Simply protecting the wealthy with a false sense of health using the stock market as a barometer only benefits the executives and shareholders. If stock is doing reasonably well in the market the perception is the company is successful. The price of this success is rarely known to the general public. When a company outsources, dodges the tax system, and downsizes its domestic employee base, it negatively affects the core of their success. So the company will show a profit on paper but this is due to opening up overhead by Page 130 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
cutting cost. Current cost cutting techniques are killing the marketplace dynamic. The upside to this is that it has become the catalyst to the recent surge in American start up companies. Locally sourced American made products, furnished by boutique style companies are the leading trend in new age company profiles. One of the side effects is a rise in American owned businesses; another, less appealing side effect is the cost to the American worker. If the American worker suffers due to the practices of the most powerful companies in the market, the market will eventually suffer. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
If the American worker suffers due to the practices of the most powerful companies in the market, the market will eventually suffer suffer..
In the future, this trend to turn from the American worker will give the public economic freedom, but cost the public proper infrastructure and educational funding. The cost of doing business is that America should provide adequate funding for all municipal systems. As a nation we should hold these companies responsible for their actions by becoming aware of business practices that have a negative effect on the American populace. Supporting locally grown business has a positive effect on the community. Since these companies are generally smaller than their international corporate counterparts they have considerably Page 131 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
less ability to dodge the tax system. Lobbyists who represent these companies have close ties to the higher ups in the legal system like judges, mayors, and prosecutors. Smaller companies cannot afford the legal protections larger companies have at their disposal. The size of these mega companies has a gravitational effect on the systems used for checking and balancing their activity. Systems are hard to balance when the pieces are too large unless it is simply one piece. When the pieces of the system are smaller they can conform to environmental changes with less effort. This is why a department store may not have the newest fashions like a boutique because of the size of the order. A department store makes larger orders of less products to appeal to a large range of customers while smaller outlets service a more direct client base. Servicing the consumer base more effectively and paying taxes is great for the long term future of the market. Although this is great for the market it presents a real challenge for the large companies. Their inability to absorb the trends in an ever changing socially driven market will eventually outpace those companies ability to change. The cost of doing business in America will eventually cost major corporations their place in the market. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Fattoria di Fibbiano is a winery and agritourism situated in Terricciola, between Pisa and Volterra, in Tuscany. This is a very beautiful area of Tuscany, even though a little less known for its wine production than other areas such as Chianti Classico, Bolgheri, or Montalcino. Fattoria di Fibbiano produce wines with indigenous grape varieties and they also have an agritourism with apartments as well as rooms for rent. During the last months, I have visited the winery at two different occasions and I have also been staying one night at the agritourism.
The history behind Fattoria di Fibbiano Talking first more specifically about Terricciola, it is a small town of Etruscan origin. It is called the cittå del vino (the city of Page 146 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
wine), as wine has been produced here for more than 3000 years and is thus a part of the local identity and culture. Fattoria di Fibbiano’s philosophy is to continue on this thread of culture and tradition, cultivating indigenous grape varieties instead of more international grapes. In the 1960-70s in Tuscany, the trend for many wineries was to start producing Supertuscans with more international grapes, while the Cantoni family in 1997 decided to do something different and instead focusing on the native grapes and produce wines with a more traditional touch. Thus in the end of the 1990s, they started to select a set of native grape varieties, replant them and in that way restore their vineyards to what they once had been. The estate in itself dates back to the Middle Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Ages when it was owned by the noble family Gherardi del Testa Barasaglia. It was only further on in the 18th century that the estate was extended to the structure and size it has today. Then, in the 20th century, more precisely in 1997, the Cantoni family from Milan decided to change their lives and careers, especially Giuseppe himself who was an industrial executive by that time decided he wanted to return to his family roots as a farmer when he retired. They found Fattoria di Fibbiano in Terricciola while touring Tuscany, and thus decided that it was the right place for them to be. They have since then renovated it all and turned it into a successful winery and an agritourism. They are following an organic way of farming since they started out, but they are only officially certified since this Page 147 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
last year. They are also a 100% renewable farm, thus being self-sustainable regarding energy use. Today the sons Matteo and Nicola run the winery together with their father, Giuseppe. So Giuseppe is the steady and constant presence and support behind the scenes, while Matteo is taking care of the more commercial side and Nicola is the oenologist and responsible for the winemaking part. In that way, it is a completely family run winery, as they do not need any external oenologist. The Cantoni family believe in looking upon wine and winemaking as part of their identity and cultural heritage. Even though their agricultural history stems from Lombardy, where Giuseppe’s parents were farmers, they have continued that Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
tradition in Tuscany creating an identity and history all their own.
Art and Wine In the courtyard, there is an art piece that they have commissioned from an artist. They wanted this work of art to symbolize the identity of and work carried out at the estate. As it is indeed a winery, the artist decided to create a main structure out of old barrel hoops and then stick, or slot, old demijohns inside the steel structure. These demijohns were used in the past by the families living in the area to come to the farm and fill them up with bulk wine. In that way, they had wine for the rest of the year at home. The vision of the artist is, firstly, to show the formation of a bunch of grapes by Page 148 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
having stuck the demijohns inside the structure. The second interpretation of the artwork is a Champagne flute with the demijohns being the bubbles striving upwards. The vineyards When the Cantoni family bought Fattoria di Fibbiano, the vineyards had been neglected for a generation, Matteo Cantoni told me, but they had never been uprooted. Thus, they today still have vineyard lots where they cultivate Sangiovese that are 120 years old. (Have a look at the vineyard here.) This part of Tuscany used to be the bottom of the sea a couple of million years ago. Therefore, the soil here consists of fossil shells and clay. In fact, when you go for a walk in the vineyards you see big sea shells laying around everywhere on the ground. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
This provides a lot of minerals that the vines can absorb which leads to complex and well -structured wines with a wide range of aromas. Fattoria di Fibbiano is focusing on cultivating indigenous grape varieties for Tuscany, such as Colombana, Vermentino, Sangiovese, Colorino, Canaiolo, and Ciliegiolo.
The wines... They produce six different wine labels, namely Fonte delle Donne, Sofia (rosé wine), Le Pianette, Casalini, L’Aspetto, and Ceppatella. All the names are area names that you can find on the map of the property. White and Rosé Wines Fonte delle Donne IGT Toscana - This is a Page 149 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
blend of 50% Vermentino and 50% Colombana. The Colombana is a very old grape variety but in the 1960s, it was to a great extent replaced by other types of grapes. It is a fresh and mineral wine with mainly notes of citrus fruits. Sofia (rosé wine) IGT Toscana - This is a 100% Sangiovese rosé wine. It is a wine with a pale pink color and with notes of red fruits, such as cherry. It is a rosé wine which pairs well with white meat and fish courses.
Red Wines Le Pianette IGT Toscana – This is a 70% Sangiovese and 30% Colorino wine. Usually one only add 3-5% of Colorino to give more color to the wine, but at Fattoria di

Fibbiano they are using a Colorino Bianco (white Colorino) and therefore they have chosen to add 30% of this grape here. The Colorino Bianco is still a red grape but with a much lower concentration of pigments. The wine is aged for 6 months in barrels of Slavonian oak and 3 months in bottle. Casalini Chianti Superiore DOCG - This is an 80% Sangiovese and 20% Ciliegiolo wine. When Matteo Cantoni was a guest in my #WinesOfItaly Blab, he told me that as Fattoria di Fibbiano lies on the top of a hill, on very dry soil, the Sangiovese therefore gets very complex and powerful and provides great structure. They then try to experiment with how to mix it with their other native grape varieties. This wine here is then aged for 8 months in barrels of Slavonian oak and Page 150 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
3 months in bottle. It has the typical notes of cherry as well as of raspberry and mulberry. It is, as said, a well structured wine with smooth tannins. L’Aspetto IGT Toscana - This is a 50% Sangiovese and 50% Canaiolo wine. It is aged for 12 months in tonneaux, 6 months in cement tanks, and 6 months in bottle. This is an intense ruby red wine with notes of mature red fruit, spices, and a touch of herbs. It is a full-bodied and elegant wine. Ceppatella IGT Toscana – This is a 100% Sangiovese wine, which is made with grapes selected from the oldest vineyard of the estate and the area in Tuscany in general. This is a 120 years old vineyard and thus they are very proud of being able to produce such a wine. For the moment they are marketing the Ceppatella from 2011, so if you buy a bottle Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
of this red wine you are indeed drinking 115 years of history. It is a wine aged for 6 months in tonneaux where the malolactic fermentation also takes place, 14 months in barrels of Slavonian oak, and 5 months in bottle. It has notes of marmalade, spices, tobacco, and cacao and a long persistence. All in all, it is a very structured, smooth, and elegant wine. A particularity Another particular aspect here, is that their wines, both the white and red ones, are transferred into cement tanks after the fermentation in steel vats. Regarding the red wines, they are transferred to wood barrels for aging after the malolactic fermentation has occurred in the cement tanks. They are then often transferred back again for some months in the cement tanks before they are Page 151 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
being aged in bottle. Their white wines are not released on the market until at least 1,5 years after the harvest and the red wines are aged for 2-4 years before their release. Thus, you get more smooth red wines. They use the cement in order to help the wine to breathe and evolve and to not get too much influence from the wood taste wise. Visit to Fattoria di Fibbiano As mentioned above, the Fattoria di Fibbiano is both a winery and an agritourism. Therefore, you can both book a stay and relax by the pool as well as get a tour of the winery. If you are interested in following the harvest and see how it is done, you can book a stay now in September and October. They also have a wine shop where you can purchase the wines. My Wine Story My interest in wine has always been there throughout my years in Italy, however it was only roughly 5 years ago that I decided to try out a sommelier course. I had seen an advertisement on Facebook about the local Fisar course in the center of Florence, and I thought it sounded very exciting. (Fisar is one of the Italian sommelier associations and they organize courses where you get accredited as a sommelier.) Therefore, I convinced a friend to come with me, even though she actually didn’t drink much and still does not. This turned out to be one of the best ideas I have had in recent years, as it brought us to discover a new and fascinating world of oenology, wine history, wine tastings, and much more. It all lead us to continue the course, attending all three levels in one sweep. For about three years now, I have been a sommelier and it is a genuinely fulfilling passion where you learn something new and meet interesting people in the Italian wine world almost every day.Fresh as a sommelier, I started elaborating my idea about combining wine and translation. Together with some fellow sommeliers from Fisar and a British translator colleague, we developed the concept Words & Wine. This one-day seminar on wine terminology in Italian and English was held in Florence nearly 3 years ago. I continued to develop this wine and terminology concept to better fit a translator-

dominated audience together with a couple of translator colleagues, changing the course name to Words at the Winery. The first of these seminars was held at the wine estate Il Borro (near Arezzo) in June 2014. In the autumn of 2014, we organized another Words at the Winery seminar at the winery Feudi di San Gregorio, near Avellino. During last year, I held smaller informal minicourses about wine in Tuscany and a wine tasting every now and then together with my fellow sommelier, Nadia Padrin, and for Fisar Firenze. At the moment, I am working on putting together a new seminar on wine terminology in English for translators and people in the wine and tourism sector. “If you weren’t you, would you be your friend?”
While in college, I was in a group of friends that gathered every Saturday to watch The Lawrence Welk Show on PBS. None of us had any money, so this was how we took a break from our rigorous studies. We loved the costumes and the wigs… they were so, uh, far out. We enjoyed each other’s company before and after the show, with munchies and discussions on various topics. One evening, after we turned off the TV, one of the girls blurted out a question. “If you weren’t you, would you be your friend?” “Absolutely!” I replied. “Why wouldn’t I be?” Stunned silence. Page 158 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Everyone looked at me like, how can you say yes so quickly. Then after a few seconds, one of the guys spoke up, “That’s a hard one. I don’t know the answer to that.” “I don’t either. I’m not sure what I would think of me,” someone else chimed in. There were about ten of us in the room, and I was the only one who said yes. “That’s because you’re fun,” they told me. “You’re all fun, too!” I replied. “Why wouldn’t you wanna be your friend?” “Don’t know… not sure… I think I might want somebody different.” Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Do you ever feel that way? What do you look for in a friend? Do you possess the characteristics of a good friend? Your friends will say that you do, but you may not see it. What is the discrepancy here? What is your perception of yourself? How does this perception affect your friendship with yourself? Are you truly your friend, your own advocate and cheerleader? Are you what you want? Why, or why not? How does this relationship with yourself influence your relationships with others? Well, let’s just say it… how doesn’t it! Page 159 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Your relationship with yourself is the one from which you can never escape. It all starts out well when you’re a small child, and then you get hurt, and other people’s opinion of you or how they treat you affects your confidence. Then somewhere along the line, you decide you would like yourself better if you were more like someone else than your own self. If you were wittier, less awkward, with different hair color, in a smaller wardrobe size, better organized, and had more money – if you were living the wonderful life of the gifted, the good looking, and the rich that everyone approves. It will be a tremendous life, the one that will definitely enable you to give back and serve more people. So if that is what you want, set your goals and make it a priority to reach them. Just don’t unfriend yourself simply because you’re not there yet. Don’t be disgusted with failures and slow progress. But it sounds all too common, right? But how
In the midst of your challenges, can you be your own friend? What do you say to and why does this happen?
yourself when you’re discouraged? Can you say the things that you would say to someone else who is in need of encouraging words? Do you deserve your own friendship and support? Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Our desire to deserve love is one of the strongest, most basic human need. We all want to belong. Acceptance is a powerful motivator. Friendship matters. One disapproval can be devastating. It can block your progress by hurting you for the rest of your life. Is one person’s disapproving opinion really that powerful? It can be, but only if you allow it to be. First, let’s talk about where this disapproval comes from. Is it truly your friend? Someone who knows who they are, what they want, and where they’re going? In other words, someone who is their own friend? I doubt it. Someone who fits in that description would encourage you to do the same – to find out who you are, what you want, and where you want to go. It may appear to be a disapproval, especially when you’re emotionally involved in that moment. But if this is the kind of person that you have on your side, take it as a simple attempt to guide you to reach higher and learn from it. Most “disapprovals” that damage your confidence and causes you to unfriend yourself is from those who have already unfriended themselves. They have no idea who they are, what they want, or where they’re going. That is why they pick on you for being the fine
person that you are. They refuse to celebrate your gifts and growth. They feel jealous and powerless, therefore, they attempt to take your power by cutting you down. This is not a disapproval of you. This is their own disapproval of themselves. They are saying the same things that someone else has said to them first. They repeat those same words to themselves, and out of habit they say the same things to you. This is a vicious cycle. You must break this cycle. Do not give them any power. Do not be swayed by words and actions that are below your
Page 160 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
standards. They are not powerful enough to influence you or the most important relationship in your life – your relationship with yourself. Be your own friend no matter what. If your friendship with yourself is not where you want it to be, figure out why. Look inward. Dig deep and tell yourself the truth. Love and forgive. Dejunk the elements that do not improve this relationship. Without this dejunking process, you will always feel off-balance and burned out, whether you realize it or not. Page 161 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Then look outward. Are there relationships that drain your energy without ever filling you up? These junky relationships occur at all levels. Anyone who keeps on taking without giving back, uses you for their gain only, and puts you down instead of building you up does not deserve you. Build positive relationships with those worth having in your life. Eliminate oppressive relationships. Spend time with people who respect you for who you are. Avoid negativity in all relationships – personal, professional, intimate, and casual. If you have a hard time pulling away from toxic relationships that do not serve you, go back inward and improve the relationship with yourself. What would you tell a friend who needs to leave negativity but can’t? You would tell them to do the right thing, to take better care of themselves, correct? Be that voice of reason for yourself. Check on your self-respect and know that you deserve respectful relationships with others. Strengthen and improve your relationship with yourself. Without this, your transformation for life-work balance and burnout prevention will not progress. Do not miss out on the chance to become your own friend. This relationship improves the quality of your life in all levels. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

IT: Thanks so much for taking the time out to speak with me Jacob. I’ve been following your work for a while, so it is a privilege to have you here today.
IT: Wow that is powerful. You often mention tapping into one’s ‘inner warrior’. Where do you draw inspiration from, which you use to activate others?
JG: Thank you so much for wanting to feature me Itiah, and for reaching out.
JG: From within…..you see if you do not go within, you go without. Everything you ever need to know or learn has already been programmed within you. You simply need to meet your master intuitive guide who is waiting to introduce you to this intelligence. Inspiration is only something you can meet when you are activated to the highest of levels within you. Once you drive down this highway, life will never be the same again. Ever. I also draw inspiration from the amazing people and things on this planet. Our world is full of inspiration everywhere you look. The problem is we are all so busy that we often miss it. Walk through a park, go to a waterfall, visit an island, snorkel in the coral reef, and you should be inspired by the very beauty of what exists in this life.
IT: Great! Let’s get started. How would you describe who you are and what you do? What does the world need to know about Jacob Galea? J G : I am a modern day Alchemist. My magic is to take ordinary things and transform them into extraordinary things. You see, in life we are all made up of the same substance that moves the universe, the same make up that performs miracles never believed until seen. What I do is to work through the heart and minds of the audience or in my sessions to ACTIVATE a feeling within people that connects them to their greater calling in life. Everyone deserves to live a life of abundance, but so few do. Why is this so? It’s because we are conditioned to accept second best. We are not driven to learn about the secrets of the subconscious mind, how it works, and what it can do for us. So now the world needs to know that a new breed of ‘Activational’, not motivational, speaker and coach is here. I am bringing about a new consciousness, and following my calling to lead people into new waters where they can dive into the life they have always desired.
Page 167 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
IT: A great reminder to not take our surroundings for granted. And you are well suited to be that master intuitive guide to help people unlock what is within. Speaking of which, tell me more about your new mission, as if being an international keynote speaker, author and business coach isn’t enough to juggle. JG: (smiles) My new mission is to build the next generation of SUPER humans. IT: That sounds like an audacious vision. Some might start imagining people with super hero powers when they hear that, so tell me what it means to you to be a 'Super Human'? Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
JG: What I mean by super human is people who are living at their highest potential and living in heaven every day by pursuing their passions, dreams, and chasing all they are called to chase. The mission is to teach everyone on this planet how to really use their mind power in conjunction with their emotional intelligence; a secret that isn’t typically taught. We have Super markets, Super cars, Super foods, Super models, but what has happened to Super Humans? The Super You? The result will be for the masses of the population to all be healthy, wealthy, and happy. Not just the 10% that currently and truly exist. “I want to encourage people to be the best version of themselves. You are not meant to merely exist but to have a deep purpose in your life, and your mission is to realize it.”Jacob Galea IT: That brings us to your aptly titled book, Birth of the Super You. How did you come up with the concept? JG: Birth of the Super You is a book I wrote talking about my journey first and what impacted me along the way to meet this Super version of me that I had never met before. The book also dives into some intense yet easy to read chapters on living the ultimate life. I wanted to go back to basics and guide everyone on what and where to look to birth the super powers that lie deep within them. This journey of the Super You will educate people on important areas of their life that are vital to their growth and development. I sought to awaken people to the infinite possibility they possess; activating their Page 168 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
purpose and showing them how to create the life they’ve been dreaming of. My book is a guide to help people take their life and career to the next level; to become limitless. I’m grateful that I have been able to help countless people unleash their inner corporate warrior and master their mindset, including celebrities, CEO’s and athletes alike. Chapters like, Entourage, Limitless, and Abundance are something I wish I read at any early age of my life. Now every person has access to this knowledge in an easily digestible book. IT: So it sounds like your new mission to create a generation of super humans is an extension of your book. JG: Exactly. IT: Let’s talk about how to plan to carry out your mission. I hear that you are launching a new clothing line combined with an international speaking tour called ‘I Will Not Be Stopped’, and you refer to both as a movement. How would you describe the ‘I Will Not Be Stopped’ Movement? JG: I am extremely passionate about all human beings being able to tap into their inner powers and break free from the mental demons that stop us all from moving forward. When you get up in the morning and put on the I WILL NOT BE STOPPED affirmation active range, you will begin your day in the most powerful state of mind. This affirmation when repeated and seen on your clothing will uplift your soul, energy, and condition you to win and be the best version of you possible. With your mind expanding, Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
you will redefine the limits of your apparent world. As such, this is not just another brand; this is a movement - the activator for the rest of your life. IT: I definitely see how powerful adopting this mindset can be. How did you choose the affirmation, ‘I Will Not Be Stopped’? JG: For years I have worked as a coach and one of the tools that I have implemented for peak performers are the power of affirmations, you should never underestimate how your words create your reality. One of the most powerful affirmations I have ever worked with is “I Will Not Be Stopped”. It has a special energy and power about it that never fails. I decided to take this to a whole new level and let the world have access to this magic movement that when said creates your ultimate destiny. After all, this is what people deserve- to have hidden secrets and techniques revealed. When something has movement it becomes Unstoppable. IT: Definitely. So what is the impact that you want to make on people who attend your tour? What do you want people to think, feel & do? JG: I want people to feel the Unstoppable force and power that they have within their soul, and for them to want to step into their greatness by living a full, rich, happy and abundant life. Why are people conditioned to live average, to feel they need to be stuck in a rut; stuck on the rat wheel of life? Page 169 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Not Be Stopped’ tour is in Los Angeles, California speaking to 200 Silicon Valley Entrepreneurs. What is it about what you do and how you do it that made America come knocking on your door? JG: What I speak about is different. I do not intend to motivate people. People should be able to motivate themselves. I do not intend to waste someone’s time where they get no real value or experience. If someone takes the time out of their precious schedules to hear me speak then believe me I want to give them 1000 times return on investment. I want them to walk away with something so deep and meaningful that it activates a feeling within their soul that makes them question what they do, why they do it, and what they need to do to be better, faster, smarter, and of course happier. America is so ready for this fresh approach, the people of America are so ready to experience something that is so satisfying, so invigorating and so life changing. Case Study Teaching our children to code is a white hot issue. Almost half a million tech jobs lie unfilled in the US today and this number is set to double by 2020. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Case Study
It’s not surprising then, that nine out of ten US parents want Computer Science taught in their child’s school. However, hands-on programming is only taught in one quarter of K-12 schools. Even in the UK, where coding has been on the national curriculum from age 5+ since 2014, there is still a distinct knowledge and confidence gap amongst parents and many teachers. Diversity remains a persistent challenge too, with women holding only 30% of jobs across 11 of the world’s largest tech companies in 2014, and girls making up only 22% of the students who took the Advanced Placement Computer Science exam last year in the US. Page 177 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
So how can we encourage and support our kids – particularly our daughters - to take up coding, and what is the best age to start? I found myself asking these questions last year, when my daughter was 6 and her switched on grandmother asked if she was coding yet. I had worked in digital industries for 15 years alongside dozens of programmers, and was clear that coding was an essential life and career skill. Just as I was keen that she learn Math as a life skill, without imagining she would become a mathematician, I was keen that she learn the principles of coding and computational thinking in an increasingly tech-driven world. That said, I wasn’t all that clear about getting started... Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
I looked around for fun and engaging apps and games to inspire a really creative girl who wasn’t that into Math at the time AND to provide sustained learning. I struggled! So I knocked heads together with two other moms in digital and we came up with mama.codes (www.mama.codes) – a family-friendly online code club offering step by step projects that parents and kids aged 3-8 could make at home on their tablets.
young children are hard hard--wired to abso patterns – including coding language
We believe coding is fundamentally a language skill, and should be taught from a young age. More than parents realize, young children are hard-wired to absorb language patterns – including coding languages.
And more than they realise, parents are ideally placed to support their child’s digital literacy, alongside their speech, reading and writing. Rather than re-invent the wheel, we chose to provide step by step guides to creating projects using an excellent free coding app called ScratchJr (http://www.scratchjr.org/). Page 178 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
It was created by the Lifelong Kindergarten research group at the MIT Media Lab, the Developmental Technologies research group at Tufts University, and the Playful Invention Company and is free to download on iPads, recent Android tablets of at least 7 inches and Chromebooks. We studied how young children develop speech through the repetition of word patterns in songs and rhymes and sought to mimic this in our coding projects, including Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
game, and even The Wheels on the Bus song when he started at just 3 years old. At our workshops at schools and with families, it’s been a joy to see children’s eyes light up when they realise the creative power of coding and the instant reward of making things happen just as they want them. We have also seen first hand how coding has supported their math and literacy with its focus on logical and sequential thinking. In just five months, we already have some tech stars in the making!
orb language es. plenty of raucous songs and rhymes for beginners of all ages. One surprising thing we learned was that children don’t need to be able to read to be able to code. My 5 year old son is now more fluent in coding than writing. He can express himself and tell his own stories far more easily via a touchscreen than a sharpened pencil.
Case Study Information I spoke to one of them, Matilda Passmore, aged 8 from London, and her mother Louisa, about how they both used mama.codes to build their coding confidence. “I’d like my three girls to have the opportunity to take whichever course they want at college and pursue whichever career. I don’t want them to be limited because they didn’t have the right building blocks as children,” explains Louisa.

“Once the mum can do the basics, the kids can get up and running with minimal instruction. Matilda will just take the laptop and watch the mama.codes project on that, and code on the tablet with minmal help from me.” “Matilda has two younger sisters and they are getting inspired and learning from her. They are starting to help out on her projects. It’s a natural way to get younger siblings involved,” adds Louisa. What has Matilda enjoyed most? “She’s really enjoyed the singing and the interactive elements – the fact you can put your own voice into it. She’d follow a mama.codes project then make it again adding her own twist or flourish – she was Page 180 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
hacking it!” reports Louisa. “She even created her own birthday card in code.” “When her friends are round from school they do a bit of coding, it’s fun. They want to show their friends, they don’t think it’s like school work.” And what will she code next? “mama.codes is a great springboard for children to discover a whole new world of opportunities with technology,” says Louisa. “Over the summer, her school holiday project was to be an ambassador for a particular area – so she decided to built her own website about the Isle of Wight where we went on holiday. She loved doing it, and I loved it too!

As I’m sitting here contemplating my navel I’m thinking about what my first article should be about. The thoughts are coming fast and furiously about all the topics I can share with you and what will make a good “first impression.” You see, it is important to me that you want to keep coming back every month and read my column. And not just read it every month, I want you to be EXCITED and LOOK FORWARD to reading it every month. As the thoughts are continuing to come fast and furiously , I am, immediately reminded of the quote from the famous comedian, W.C. Fields - “If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit.” I know I just can’t do that, because anyone that knows me knows I have too much integrity; and would not want to insult you by attempting to “baffle you with bullshit.” I am thinking of all the thousands of writing tips, ideas and thoughts I can give you
Then it dawns on me, all of a sudden I know where to start; with one of the most prolific writers of all time Ernest Hemingway. and where to begin.
Let me set the scene for you: Havana, May 1954, - the Madrid café where George Plimpton, an American journalist, writer and literary editor, (also one of the founders of the literary magazine, The Paris Review, which is still in existence Page 188 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
today) is interviewing Ernest Hemingway. During the interview, George Plimpton asks Ernest Hemingway, “What would you consider the best intellectual training for the would-be writer?” “Hem” replied, “Let’s say that he should go out and hang himself because he finds that writing well is impossibly difficult. Then he should be cut down without mercy and forced by his own self to write as well as he can for the rest of his life. At least he will have the story of the hanging to commence with.” To be honest, I don’t think we need to be so dramatic; however, Hemingway has a point, we all have to start our writing somewhere. Today, writing well is more important than ever. Far from being the province of a select few as it was in Hemingway’s day, writing is a daily occupation for all of us — in email, on blogs, social media, and through articles and books. It is also a primary means for documenting, communicating, and refining our ideas. As essayist, programmer, and investor Paul Graham has written, “Writing doesn’t just communicate ideas; it generates them. If you’re bad at writing and don’t like to do it, you’ll miss out on most of the ideas writing would have generated.” So what can we do to improve our writing short of hanging ourselves? Below and over the next months I will share insight from some exceptional authors and myself for you to use, regardless of the Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
type of writing you do. Even though, the thoughts and ideas shared will be predominately focused on the “craft of writing,” most of the thoughts and ideas will pertain to writing projects of any kind, whether it is something as simple as an email or more multifaceted as a blog, social media, an article or book. As with anything else, we are starting at the beginning. The beginning for me is looking at writing as a whole process, unto itself, which starts with sitting down, and just doing it. However, not all of us have the ability to do that. Believe it or not, there is a process to writing – which many writers follow naturally, and when a writer can’t.
What is an author to do? Well I will tell you. Most authors when thinking about writing never think they are ready to start writing. Steven Pressfield, author of thirteen books has an approach to writing and starting before you’re ready, which I love… Page 189 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
”[The] Resistance knows that the longer we noodle around ’getting ready,’ the more time and opportunity we’ll have to sabotage ourselves. Resistance loves it when we hesitate, when we over-prepare. The answer: plunge in.” Sometimes we just have to start before we are ready. I know that for me this is very true. As I prepared to write this column, this statement couldn’t be any truer for me. I kept getting ready, to get ready. For me, even though I knew my overall subject for this column is writing, first I had to figure out what part of the writing process should I start with, especially for this first article. I knew the topic had to be something I cared about. I knew I didn’t want it to be the same topics everyone else has done, like word count, scheduling time to write etc., I will save those for a later time, once we know each other better. I also know there is nothing new on the planet; however, I wanted to have my own distinct approach and one that you could hear which would inspire you to sit down and just write. The infamous author, Kurt Vonnegut talks about this way, “Find a subject you care about and which you in your heart feel others should care about. It is this genuine caring, and not your Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
games with language, which will be the most compelling and seductive element in your style.” Now I figured out my subject: starting at the beginning, the real beginning. Now it was time for me to make a decision about my style of writing. So, I looked to P. D. James for her thoughts on getting started. When P. D. James, author of twenty books, was interviewed on the subject of getting started with a writing project, she was quoted as saying; “Don’t just plan to write—write. It is only by writing, not dreaming about it, that we develop our own style.” Once again, I knew I just had to just sit down and start writing. My research was done and I was as prepared as I was going to be for this article. To be honest, this article didn’t come as easily as I had hoped, prayed and trusted it would. In finding my style for at least this article, let alone future articles, I know that I really like to use various quotes, probably more than anyone else. Why, you ask? The answer is simple, quotes inspire me. It really doesn’t matter, whether they are serious or funny or whom the quotes are from; whether it is a famous author, celebrity, politician, or historical figure. I use the quotes to give me direction; they become my compass, “my true north,” especially for writing projects, let alone the rest of my life (more about that later).
Page 190 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
The next thing I do when commencing a writing project, is prewriting, which covers everything I do before starting my rough draft. As a minimum, prewriting means coming up with an idea. That’s where quotes come in. The quotes give me ideas and inspiration for the direction I want to take with my writing project and then I expand on it. Let me give you a perfect example of this. When I started writing this article, I thought iI was going to write about how to get started on a writing project and writing what author, Anne Lamott, in her book, Bird by Bird (1994), calls “Shitty First Drafts.” The article ended up going in a slightly different direction because of this section on quotes using them for ideas and inspiration and weaving them into the article the way I have here. To be truthfully honest, I initially didn’t realize how important the usage of quotes was to me at this point in my personal writing process until now. I have always included quotes in my public writing, mostly to make or land a point, and of course when doing that they give massive credibility to my thoughts or ideas I was presenting. However, when writing this article, I had one of those, “Aha” moments, so you can see this point of what writing can do for you. As I mentioned earlier in a quote from Paul Graham “...you’ll miss out on most of the ideas writing would have generated.”
Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
In this case, writing generated a direction of inspiration by using quotes. I know for me that I like writing what inspires me and what I want to read. By writing what I enjoy reading makes it easier and more fun for me to write by sharing my thoughts and ideas. As a matter of fact, Mark Frauenfelder, author of The Mad Professor and Rule the Web, says, “Don’t forget to write the book that you want to read,” I apply his philosophy to all books, articles, blogs or any other written content that I publish. I don’t know about you, with the world being so serious these days, I always like to read something that has humor in it, to make me laugh or chuckle. I don’t know about you for me writing allows me to humor myself. David Shenk, author of, The Forgetting and The Genius in All of Us, believes, “Let some of you come through. You’re obviously not writing a memoir here, but this book is still partly about you — the world you see, the way you think, the experiences you have with people. And trust me, readers are interested in who you are. So don’t be afraid to let bits and pieces of your personality and even life details seep into the text. It will
Page 191
breathe a lot of life into the book.” Even though, David Shenk refers to books, I am here to tell you, know that it applies to whatever you are writing. I trust you were able to get some insight to who I am and what I am here to offer you over the next months. I look at it this way, if I can share my “humor” with you no matter how trite or trivial it might be, if I made you laugh or chuckle I have accomplished my goal of transporting you from where you were into my world even if it was just for a few seconds. I trust that by reading some of these ideas and thoughts they will make the voice in your head whisper, “I can do this” a little louder when your eyelids snap open before dawn as you sit down to write, like Hemingway did. I trust the commentary here inspires the creation of many great books, articles, blogs, emails and messages. I’m deeply grateful for the time and attention you have given to read my column. Next month, we will continue with the writing process with what Anne Lamott calls, “Shitty First Drafts.” I look forward to next month and “Spinning Your Words of Wisdom into Wealth.”

A Beacon Of Justice, Security and Rule of Law: German Chancellor Angela Merkel By Cynthia Lardner Page 195 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel is widely viewed as the most powerful woman not only in the EU but in the world. Today, Ms. Merkel is confronted with widespread criticism primarily from fringe groups in Germany threatening Germany’s long-standing status as being a leader in justice, security and adherence to Rule of Law. Mrs. Merkel, who has served as Germany’s Chancellor since 2000 and is a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is not only up for reelection in September 2017 but there are a number of key state elections coming up. Russia’s propaganda campaign against the CDU, as well as the Christian Social Union (CSU), Germany’s controlling party, is well underway. Weaponising German Elections “Russia is starting to weaponize electoral processes in Europe,” stated Joerg Forbrig, senior program director of the U.S. German Marshall Fund in Berlin. “Europe when united is a problem for them [the Russians]. It doesn't work when the whole of Europe joins together,” stated Anne Applebaum, Pulitzer Prize Russian Scholar, Director of the Transitions Forum at the Legatum Institute, and an adjunct fellow of the Center for European Policy Analysis. Page 196 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Applebaum added that by causing destabilization, Mr. Putin undermines the EU, which represents democracy, is based on Rule of Law, and is ideologically different from Russia, stated Applebaum. What better place to strike than Germany, which since World War II, has been the EU leader in justice, security and adherence to Rule of Law. Today, with Ms. Merkel at the helm, that tradition has continued.“The underlying logic is that when you Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

discredit Chancellor Merkel and Germany, you also weaken Europe,” stated Juergen Hardt, foreign policy spokesman in the Bundestag for the CDU/CSU alliance. Mr. Putin’s aspirations in Germany extend well beyond meddling in elections to being imperialistic and expansionist. Germany is especially important to Mr. Putin both historically and based on its location. Germany is a neighbor to countries between its borders and Russia that are largely sympathetic Page 197 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
It is the refugee crises which has been most damaging to Ms. Merkel. Ms. Merkel has welcomed over 1.1 million refugees to Germany. With 16,000 refugees having this far arrived every month in 2016, officials are bracing for a total of 300,000 refugees to arrive in Germany by year end. That number is dependent upon the deal Ms. Merkel negotiated between Turkey and the EU, which is on the brinks of falling apart, creating the possibility that Turkey will allow immigrants to flood into EU. This number is also dependent upon where Russia Despite over-burgeoning the German immigration system, Ms. Merkel’s slogan has been “Wir schaffen es” or “We can do it.” On July 28th, Ms. Merkel confirmed the continuation of Germany’s open-door migration stance, stating, "We decided to fulfill our humanitarian tasks. Refusing humanitarian support would be something I would not want to do and I would not recommend this to Germany.... Anxiety and fear cannot guide our political decisions.” She added, "Let me be clear, we are at war with Islamic State; we are not at war with Islam." Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Previously Ms. Merkel had stated, “The question is not whether we are able to change but whether we are changing fast enough… When it comes to human dignity, we cannot make compromises.” “Merkel was "courageous" in her response to Europe's refugee crisis and he highlighted the importance of the U.S.' relationship with Europe's largest economy… Germany remains one of America's closest and strongest allies - an indispensable partner not only for our own security and those of our NATO allies, but also for the security, the prosperity and the dignity of people across the whole world,” stated President Barack Obama prior to an April 24, 2016 meeting with Ms. Merkel. Page 198 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
In recent months, Ms. Merkel’s humanitarian and democratic values have not served her well with her constituency. In July, Ms. Merkel’s approval rating dropped from 59% in June to 47% in July. In addition, two-thirds of the Germans polled are opposed to her open door policy. A July 11, 2016 Pew Research Center survey found that 61% of Germans believe the recent influx of refugees will "increase the likelihood of terrorism in our country." The survey also found that 61% of Germans believe Muslims in their country "want to be distinct from the larger society." The drop in approval ratings coincides with four over-publicized 2016 attacks. In July 2016 there were two attacks by refugees on Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
German nationals with the only fatalities being the terrorists themselves. There were also two attack in February and July but they were committed by German nationals. In a break from the CDU party line, Berlin CDU Senator Frank Henkel, on July 25th, conceded that, "No one should delude themselves: We obviously have imported some brutal people who are capable of committing barbaric crimes in our country. We have to say this clearly and without taboos. This also means that we must deal aggressively with Islamism. If we do not, we risk that German politics will be perceived as being detached from reality." The drop in overall approval, including within the CDU, has given rise to another other political party in German, The Alternative for Deutschland (AfD), linked to Mr. Putin and widely viewed by mainstream Germans as neo-Nazi. Additionally, there Page 199 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
is the the Patriotic Europeans Against The Islamification of the Continent (PEGIDA), also labeled Neo -Nazi. Both groups are gaining momentum against both the CDU and CSU.
The Alternative for Deutschland As of September 4, 2015 the AfD, which has ran against Merkel’s party on an antiimmigration platform, had secured representation in nine out of 16 German state parliaments. Nationally, the AfD is polling at around 12 percent. In Berlin AfD support is approximately 14 percent. According to Alina Polyakova at the Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center at the Atlantic Council in Washington, the AfD which is headed by Frauke Petry and Jörg Meuthen, supports Mr. Putin, and receives Russian funding. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
The AfD was originally founded in 2013 to oppose German-backed bailouts for poorer southern European countries. On the heels of Brexit, as many countries are evaluating their commitment to the EU, Mr. Meuthen reiterated the AfD’s position that the Euro should be abolished as a currency. But, it was in May 2016 the AfD adopted an anti-Islam policy. On August 19 2016 the AfD announced that the its youth wing had linked up with the youth wing of Mr. Putin’s United Russia party, the Young Guard of Russia. The AfD’s growth is troubling in a country where 10-15% of all Germans support Mr. Putin who in 2014 stated, “I expect that the citizens of Germany will also support the aspiration of the Russians, of historical Russia, to restore unity.” This is quite troubling when read in context with Russia’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov’s March 2016 statement that, “During at least the past two centuries any attempts to unite Europe without Russia and against it have inevitably led to grim tragedies, the consequences of which were always overcome with the decisive participation of our country.” Page 200 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
The Lisa Affair The Kremlin has been no holds barred when it comes to meddling in German politics. Most prominently is the “Lisa Affair”. A 13-year-old ethnic Russian girl and German model Gina-Lisa Lohfink claimed she had been raped by a two immigrants in Germany. The allegations were eventually determined to be false but not before the precipitating widespread protests spearheaded by the AfD, and adversely impacting Germany’s March 2016 regional elections in which Ms. Merkel’s party suffered stinging losses. German officials are confident that the alleged rape was created by Mr. Putin’s propaganda machine. Mr. Lavrov used Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

the fictional event to terminate Russian diplomatic relations with Germany under the guise that Germany had failed to protect an ethnic Russian.“The Lisa Affair was a real eye-opener,” stated Forbig. Germany already has a special unit tasked with countering Russian disinformation and it works on the assumption that Putin’s goal is to topple EU-friendly governments and replace them with proRussia parties, regardless of where they fall on the political spectrum. The EU assembled a similar task force this past March charged with the “correction and fact-checking of misinformation” and to “develop an EU narrative through key Page 201 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Trouble for Ms. Merkel’s CDU party is also brewing in Saxony-Anhalt, a poor state notorious for being the most rebellious of the German states. There, the CDU is clinging to a narrow five percent margin. Noted for inciting racism, xenophobia and Islamophobia, the PEGIDA is a movement started in Dresden that has been demonstrating on Mondays since 1989 in Saxony, Dresden, Leipzig and Berlin. The PEGIDA adopted the "We are the people" chant in these marches. OF course, there are always massive counter-marches, especially in Berlin. The PEGIDA’s organizers have been called “far-right extremists and demagogues” by German authorities. On October 1, 2015 10,000 PEGIDA supporters marched through Dresden protesting Ms. Merkel’s plan to establish an additional 100,000 places in refugee reception centers in the EU and the Balkans. Protesters carried a placard depicting Ms. Merkel wearing a hijab. From October 2015 through the date of this rally the number of PEGIDA supporters skyrocketed from a mere 350 to over 17,500 people. Just weeks prior, the PEGIDA issued a 10point-program demanding stopping the influx of asylum seekers, adopting a German asylum emergency law, suspending the Schengen treaty, imposing stricter border controls and exiting the EU if the German government fails to adopt its program. In response to government threats to ban the PEGIDA, on July 18 2016 the PEGIDA announced the creation of a new political party, the Popular Party for Freedom and Direct Democracy (FDDV). Lutz Bachmann, the founder and the leader of the PEGIDA, stated the FDDV supports the AfD in the upcoming elections and "shall only field candidates in a limited number of constituencies.” When German President Joachim Gauck made a late June 2016 visit to Sebnitz, in Saxony, the PEGIDA protesters taunted him with shouts that he was a “traitor to the people” and “politically pathetic”. On August 1, 2016 2300-2900 people protested in Dresden at an anti-immigration and anti-Islamism PEGIDA rally. On the main stage, the slogan “Stop the Islamization of Europe!” was prominently displayed. One of the speakers, blaming Ms. Merkel for the recent attacks by refugees, proclaimed that, “Islamist terror has come to western Germany, particularly to Bavaria, inciting chanting by the protesters that - “We are the people!” and “Merkel must go!”. Banners and placards reading “No more solidarity – it is Bullsh*t!”; “Kick throat cutting terrorists and Islamist crowd out of Germany!”; and “No mosques!” were waved by protesters. Several demonstrators were observed wearing tshirts bearing the slogan “Rapefugees are not welcome!” On August 17, 2016 Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel made a campaign stop in Salzgitter, in Lower Saxony. Based on his support of Ms. Merkel’s open-borders position, Mr. Gabriel has become a hate figure for Page 202 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Germany’s far right. He was met by twenty men wearing masks taunting him with hate slogans. While Mr. Gabriel initially “flipped off” the protesters, he quickly recovered his composure inviting the protesters to have a constructive discussion with him, which they declined.
The Christian Social Union The Christian Social Union has been the CDU's sister party in Bavaria. They are not traditional rivals, but "fraction" friends. On July 29, 2016, Thomas Jahn, CSU Vice chairman, lambasted Merkel's opendoor migration policy, stating, "We need to control our borders. That is the most important thing at the moment. And we need to send the dangerous people with Islamist ideology back to the countries outside Europe and the European Union." His sentiments were echoed on July 30, 2016 by Jens Spahnl, the CSU MP for Steinfurt and Borken and deputy finance minister, who stated, "My impression is that we all underestimated a year ago what was in store for us with this big refugee and migration movement. Integration is a Herculean task that does not end with a three-week language course." Mr. Spahn also stated, “Germany may not be the right country for those who want to keep their wife in a burka or niqab, especially now that we have become such a sought-after destination for so many. We need to send some strong signals about what is acceptable and what isn’t.” He also called for a burqa ban: "A ban on the full body veil — that is the niqab and the burka — is overdue... I do not want to have to encounter any burqa in this Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
country. In that sense, I am a burqaphobe." Mr. Spahn is expected to be Ms. Merkel’s primary competition in next year’s federal elections. Ms. Merkel, despite all of the discursiveness in Germany, is still expected to prevail in the 2017 election.
September 4th MecklenburgVorpommern State Elections On September 4th German state elections were held in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Ms. Merkel’s electoral district, a north-eastern region on the Baltic Sea, in which all 71 seats were up for grabs. The latest post-poll projections show the center-left Social Democrats won 30.3 percent of the vote. Traditionally, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has been governed by a corroborative and highly construction coalition between the SPD and CDU, mirroring the power structure at federal level.
Page 203 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Ms. Merkel's CDU party claimed only 19.3 percent of the vote placing it third place and behind AfD the which garnered 21 percent of the vote. In the days prior to the election, polls had placed the CDU as running neck and neck with the AfD with each party expected to receive 21 percent of the vote. Speaking on August 16, 2016 Ms. Merkel stated, “But this phenomenon of Islamist terrorism or [Islamic State] is not a phenomenon that came to us because of refugees but one that we already had.” While Ms. Merkel has repeatedly stated, “We can do it”, voters who have traditionally voted for her are left the flock. “She says we can do it, but actually we can’t do it and then they call somebody with such views a far-right radical,” said Klaus-Dieter Bauske of Mirow and a CDU member until 2006. “I am not sure whether I will vote this time, but if I do, it will be the AfD.” Ms. Merkel responded with new initiatives to stop the flow of migrants in order to convince Germany that she is keeping it safe. But, it was too little too late. Addressing supporters, local AfD leader LeifErik Holm boasted that, "Perhaps this is the beginning of the end of Angela Merkel's chancellorship today," even though the AfD gained limited political power as a result of the September 4th election; an election based a omnificent campaign of xenophobic scaremongering. Leaders in the CDU party, in post-election comments failed to exhibit solidarity. For instance, CDU politician Wolfgang Bosbach stated that the arrival of hundreds of thousands of migrants without documents had "put the wind in the AfD's sails". In twelve month preceding the election, Mecklenburg-Western registered not a single Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
high-profile criminal incident, such as terrorist attacks or rape, carried out by asylum seekers, and a decline in theft and violent crime. Conversely, Police in MecklenburgVorpommern recorded seven incidents of attempted arson at refugee shelters in 2015. The AfD’s propaganda campaign played to the fears of the German people, who have been spooked over what are isolated instances of violence in other states considering the sheer number of refuges involved. The propaganda campaign was indirectly or directly funded by the Russian government. Mr. Putin is expert at weaponising information or misinformation. Consider the failed Dutch referendum as to opening up EU to Ukraine as a trading partner. Its proponents were funded by Russia who is embroiled in conflict at every level with Ukraine. By analogy, “Those who follow Kremlin propaganda understand that it is not necessary for Putin to have Clinton’s e-mails to cause serious damage to a Clinton presidency… The Kremlin knows that repeated lies are eventually taken as truth, so that an unsourced narrative, repeated, will eventually become the “truth.”,” stated Paul Roderick Gregory, a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, at Stanford and Cullen Professor of Economics at the University of Houston specializing in Russian politics (Emphasis in Original). Take for instance, the post-election comment by Gero Neugebauer, a political scientist at Berlin’s Free University, who opined that, “People will see this as the start of the ‘Kanzlerdämmerung’ [twilight of the Page 204 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
chancellor]. If a lot of CDU members start seeing this defeat as Merkel’s fault, and members of parliament start seeing her as a danger for the party and their own jobs, the whole situation could escalate out of control.”Prior to this election, pollsters felt that Ms. Merkel could hold on to the chancellorship. Now, it is an open question. Ms. Merkel has yet to state whether she will stand for a fourth term.
Up-Coming September 18th State Elections in Berlin In Berlin, the capital and a city-state in its own right, one poll showed the CDU had 18 percent of the vote, down one percentage point from June. In one early August poll, the CDU early was predicted to take 28.3 percent of the vote, the CDU only 23 percent and the AfD not far behind with 14 percent. What is certain is that the AfD is emerging as a legitimate contender. "The problem is not just 10 AfD members out of 140 representatives in the state parliament. That won't change the city. A big problem would be when the AfD takes one or two seats at the district level. The district councils have influence over budgets worth millions and hundreds of administrative employees," stated Berlin mayor Michael Müller. AfD’s frontrunner Holm has called for stronger ties with Russia and an end to Ms. Merkel’s migration policy. Mr. Holm’s campaign statements includes warnings about the spread of Islam. The AfD has stated a new campaign that proposes the banning mosques in a country that respects freedom of religion. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Yet, the mere suggestion by AfD has created ripples across Europe by other nationalist and xenophobic fringe groups, supporting Mr. Putin, such as France’s National Front, Austria’s Freedom Party and Britain’s Ukip and English Defence League, intensifying the East-West rift among the dominate EU member states. Gerald Knaus, Founding Chairman of the European Stability Initiative, during an August 30, 2016 talk at The Hague Institute for Global Justice on the EU accession process for the Balkan states, stated that he fears that Islamophobia and Eurosceptic views, such as those espoused by the AfD and the PEGIDA are going to spread to those countries striving to come into compliance with the EU’s stringent Rule of Law requirements. If the EU accession process is too prolonged, Mr. Knaus stated that, “The enlargement process fails and new ideas will shape the region.” Mr. Knaus confirmed that the Putin propaganda machine was already hard at work in the Balkans.
Conclusion While Ms. Merkel is steadfast as a beacon of justice, security and Rule of Law, the EU, as well as other democratic nations must continue in their support of her fine leadership as without a stable Germany, the security of the Europe is at an even greater risk from Russian interference or, worse, aggressive expansionist actions.

A Bigger Crisis Looming? In an unprecedented move, Germany has advised its citizens to stock up in case a civil defense emergency arises. A 69-page German Interior Ministry document stated that, "an attack on German territory, requiring conventional defence of the nation, is unlikely" but that citizens should stockpile 10 days of food and enough water for five days. Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization
Presents
Nana and Nick Brandt
With 10 years of experience under her belt as top executive of a small but powerful organization, Nana had made more right choices than wrong. And her group had survived because of it. They had bested some of their rivals for resources and survived the elements and even full-on attacks by their natural and unnatural enemies. Nana carved out a place for themselves in an adversarial and competitive environment, one as unforgiving and harsh as an oppressive government regime. While on the surface all looked in harmony, she was fully aware that Frankie, a younger female exec, was next in line to take over and alert to any weakness Page 214 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
Nana might have. She knew full well if she faltered, Frankie would happily step in to take her place and, in a moment, she would lose all control and command of the team she had worked so hard to build and protect. Her team had come to trust her implicitly. She held full sway over all important decisions made and almost minute to minute kept herself on high alert in order to continuously move her team into the best strategic positions for forward progress. When a windfall opportunity presented itself to consolidate and secure a position for the group in the relative safety of a wildlife preserve run by Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
world-renowned conservationist, Lawrence Anthony, she seized it. Footnote: (The full story can be found in an engaging book entitled: The Elephant Whisper. ) The elephant herd over which Nana was matriarch was finally in relative safety and could thrive Conversely, Qumquat and her family did not fare as well. While internationally renowned fine art photographer Nick Brandt memorialized her in a stunning photographic portrait, this magnificent elephant and two of her children were killed by a fierce enemy -– a poacher. We all need to be competent executives managing our day-to-day lives, whether you are leading a herd of elephants, or running a family, a job, a department or a company. And survival is what it is fundamentally about. Not the crude definition of survival – barely eking out an existence – but rather, how to obtain real survival, which includes thriving with abundance in all areas of your life and for all that are connected with you – from your mate, to your children, your extended family, friends, business associates, other life forms and every aspect of the world around you. This is a Life Assisting Life approach to living – a method for better survival taught by the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization (LAEO). “Whether we are working with industry leaders or children, indigenous tribes or government regulators, LAEO helps people understand that no life survives alone. This better connects everyone with the natural world, resulting in more constructive decision-making and workable solutions. We take an educational approach that brings about life assisting life instead of life clashing with life. Page 215 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
We named this field of environmental science, Cooperative Ecology , and it guides every choice, decision, and strategic plan we make,” said LAEO’s Senior VP & Science and Tech Committee Coordinator Diane Wagenbrenner. Some of LAEO’s “Co Eco” lessons prompt selfexamination: How does each of us survive better? The answer? Start by simply looking! Look around yourself and decide to be more aware of the condition of people and things around you. Then find something you can do to make it a little better; to bring things into a little better harmony with the rest of the world; to help life co-operate a bit better with the rest of life. “Co Ecoing” some area of a person’s existence, whether that part of their life is relatively insignificant to them or is vitally important to their survival, is a fulfilling endeavor. A truly stellar example of this on a grand scale is Nick Brandt's extraordinary undertaking to stop the poaching of elephants in the Amboseli eco system in Kenya and Tanzania, and to bring the local villagers into better harmony with the natural world around them. Since 2001, Brandt has been documenting the vanishing natural world and animals of East Africa through his haunting, majestic photographic portraits of elephants, giraffes, lions, gorillas, rhinos, and other large mammals. Returning to Africa to continue his work, he repeatedly found that magnificent wildlife he had photographed in earlier trips had since been poached or needlessly killed. He became painfully aware of the urgent crisis facing wildlife conservation in East Africa.
View INHERIT THE DUST Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
Deciding to do something about it, he joined forces with world-renowned conservationist Richard Bonham. Together, they formed Big Life Foundation, raising the necessary funds to hire and train rangers and provide the needed outfitting for stable outposts including buildings, uniforms, tents, food, Jeeps, and weapons. Big Life has empowered over 350 Masaai rangers from nearby villages. As a result, poaching has been dramatically reduced to almost zero in an area covering over 2 million acres.
But the story does not end there. Three years after the conclusion of his African photographic book trilogy, On This Earth (2005), A Shadow Falls (2009), and Across the Ravaged Land (2013), Brandt returned to East Africa to photograph the escalating devastation to the continent’s natural world. In a series of epic panoramas, he recorded the impact of mankind in places where animals used to roam, but no longer do. In each location, Brandt erected a life size panel of one of his animal portrait photographs, setting the panels within a world of explosive urban development and toxic wasteland. The arduous months of production to create each work resulted in stunning panoramas published in an oversized volume entitled Inherit The Dust in March 2016 that includes two incisive essays by the artist. Accompanying exhibitions featuring large-scale prints are being held at prestigious galleries in New York, Los Angeles, London, and Berlin, among other cities. Page 216 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
On April 20th of this year, the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization (LAEO) held a celebratory Earth Day event at the Fahey/Klein Gallery showing of the Inherit the Dust Exhibit in Los Angeles. Brandt was presented LAEO’s Elephant Whisperer Award for his extraordinary accomplishments as an artist, humanitarian and conservationist. Local LAEO members were able to meet Brandt, view his exhibition, and participate in a Q & A about his work to discuss solutions for bringing better cooperation between all life. Brandt’s Big Life Foundation story is worth connecting to at BigLife.org. Co-founded in 2010, this nonprofit has proven to be one of the most successful conservation programs in the world, dealing with conflict issues between man and elephant. While Earth Day seems to bring mostly bad news pushing negative messages about the many things wrong with our planet, we encourage people to focus on what is working, what is going right, and what can be done to make it better. Female Executives like Nana serve to set an elephant example for Cooperative Ecology Living. It is time more people Co Eco-ed their lives! Author’s note: In 2012, Qumquat fell to a poacher’s bullet. Nana still lives in peace with her herd at Thula Thula private wildlife reserve and can be seen there on the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization’s extraordinary Eco Safaris to South Africa. In 2009, she got a cataract, and Frankie promoted herself to Matriarch of the herd. Barbara Wiseman is the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization’s International President. Meet one of Our
NAFE Women
Reatha Reedus., Nafe Member and a Multi Talented Women I first meet Reatha Reedus 6 years ago when I joined the GFWC Menifee/Sun City Women’s Club. In 2012 Reatha also became a member of my Menifee Nafe (National Association of Female Executives) group. Reatha totally has a heart for volunteering something she has been doing her entire life. She has been active in countless organizations and projects over the years some she started because she saw a need. She has mentored small business owners, volunteered for the Temecula Valley Senior Citizens Center and Food Bank, supported the Arts and developed “Going Red for Healthy Hearts”, a community summit highlighting and educating the public on heart disease in women. I had the opportunity to work with her on one of the Go Red projects along with her beautiful and talented daughter, Dr Desiree Reedus, a cardiologist, who currently is in Indiana heading up the Urgent Care department at the VA Hospital where she serves our Veterans in need. Page 230 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
For many years Reatha served as the chair of various committees for the Temecula Film Festival, where she initiated a program encouraging seniors and those with disabilities to partake in the festival activities. One her projects with the Film Festival was designing and hosting Hospitality Suites for the film makers. She for many years also chaired the Arts and Partnership Committee for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in The DeAnza District. As a member of the Riverside Women’s Club she and her daughter Dr. Desiree Reedus started the “Doctors Corner” with first year students assigned by the Dean from the first Medical School in Riverside. They have the opportunity to be mentored by Dr. Reedus and also gained valuable knowledge from the many members of the Riverside Women’s Club. Reatha is also amazing at decorating, many times I have asked her to take that unique talent to help me with events I was chairing like the GFWC Menifee/ Sun City Women’s Club Tea, many Nafe projects and last year I asked her to help me with the help of others to decorate the stage for the Temecula Valley Symphony Christmas Concert, which looked amazing. She has helped decorate numerous Nafe Conferences over the years as well and people are always in awe as how beautiful things look. Below are a few photos of some decorating she did for the Riverside Women’s Club Reatha was born in Alabama, and raised in Louisville. Kentucky and Cleveland, Ohio. She moved to California in 1970, and first lived in Claremont where she also got her Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html
MBA from Claremont Graduate College. She currently resides in Temecula, California where she has been a long time resident and very active in many community activities and events. She is the oldest of 7 children 2 boys and 5 girls. Her hobbies are all types of art, which includes painting, ceramics, sculpturing and a variety of crafts, she has a knack to create beautiful things. Over the years she has won many awards, one of her latest was the Soroptomist Club Women of Significance Award and the President of the United States Call to Service Award for her over 4,000 hours of community service. She has received many awards from State and local government agencies as well. She continues to help the GFWC Riverside Women’s Club with other projects including their English Tea schedule for November. She is also a total support to the Menifee Nafe Network where she is also a member. Reatha is certainly the person you want on your Team no matter what project you are doing, I know I love it when she is part of my team on the numerous projects I get involved with.

What Does NAFE Mean to Me When I joined the Riverside Chapter of NAFE, I believe although the intent may have been to connect and network with other professional women, I did not expect the profound personal relationships I have developed. Nafe has provided an extension of myself that I was seeking to cultivate and expand. The experiences and encounters with each of the ladies have been and is actively influential in my life and I in theirs. This network offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere that encourages me to continue my interactions. The connections I have developed provide intense private and excellent business relationships that have allowed me to grow and be of service to those I come in contact with. The training and the speakers that are available has increased my knowledge and the potential to excel while focusing on specific areas of business and life Nafe Riverside Network is the perfect organization that allows women, such as myself to come together, motivate each other and offer reciprocal help and assistance one to another. It has enhanced my life in ways that have helped me give of myself without feeling used or abused. The supplementary leadership skills attained have given me the ability and opportunity to reach out to women of all ethnicities, economic and social diversities, meeting their needs and providing insight into any given situation.
