The department, while highlighting its factual position on the matter and to clear doubts on the implementation of NFSA 2013 in the state, said NFSA became effective in the state from July and August 2016. For judicious and fair preparations of ration cards, F&CS said it was assisted by all stake holders including Village Council, Town Council, GBs and officials and serious steps has been initiated to check multiple holding of ration cards. away by them following the demonetisation move of the Government of India. Sources said that the militant groups kept the extorted money in cash, mostly in their camps in Myanmar and immediately after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the decision for demonetisation, the militant groups started making efforts to send the old currency notes to India so that they can use their sympathisers to exchange the notes to new ones. Though the vigil along the international border with Myanmar was intensified following the reports of the move by the ultras, they managed to send good amounts to India to exchange the old currency notes.

Sources said that according to intelligence inputs, the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) was keeping around Rs 6 crore in old currency notes in the camps in Myanmar. The outfit managed to exchange around 50 per cent of those in Nagaland. The outfit used the family members of the ULFA(I) militants, who are now staying in Nagaland and their sympathisers and associates in that state to exchange the old currency notes. S i m i l a r l y, t h e NSCN(K) tried to exchange old currency notes valued at around Rs 5 crore and the outfit also managed to exchange around 50 per cent of the amount. The outfit sent a group

to Zunheboto district for the exchange of currency notes. It is believed that the Manipur-based outfits also managed to get substantial amounts of old currency notes, but the amount is yet to be assessed by the security agencies. Sources further said that the issue has been discussed in various forums and the last meeting of the Unified Command on November 22 had also took serious note of the issue and the Assam Government has already wrote to the Government of Nagaland and the State Bank of India. The security agencies are also monitoring the situation so that the persons used by the ultras to exchange the old currency notes can be brought to book, sources added. K Y M C

The team raided Lahorijan Sunday Market, Sun City hotel and private warehouses of Danny Chand and Firoz Khan. lous traders involved in the mega scale bootlegging. The raid, which was carried out in two different phases by BIEO sleuths and the excise official, made a total seizure of over 40,000 cases of liquor worth Rs. 6 Crore. SC gives slew of directions with regards to racial violence against people from NE NEW DELHI, DEC 15 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court today passed a slew of directions, including setting up of a threemember panel headed by a Joint Secretary-level officer, to enhance a sense of security and inclusion of the people from north-eastern states who faced racial violence and hate crimes. The panel — comprising Joint Secretary (North-east), the Ministry of Home Affairs, and two other members to be nominated by the Union government — has been given powers ranging from ensuring strict action in incidents of racial discrimination, racial atrocities and racial violence and suggesting measures to curb such hate and racial crimes. The court also directed the government that the effective monitoring mechanism suggested by the M P Bezbaruah Committee in its report should be implemented and “should not like innumerable instances of its ilk, languish in dusty shelves of long forgotten archives”. It was also of the view that involvement of the law enforcement machinery is alone not sufficient to resolve the problem and stressed that mindsets have to be changed including in universities, colleges and ed-

ucational institutions, places of work and in society. After perusing report of the panel headed by Bezbaruah, a former bureaucrat and member of the North Eastern Council, and the Centre’s response to it, a bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur said, “We are of the view that in order to enhance a sense of security and inclusion,…the Ministry of Home Affairs should take proactive steps to monitor the redressal of issues pertaining to racial discrimination faced by citizens of the nation drawn from the Northeast.” “For that purpose, a regular exercise of monitoring and redressal should be carried out by a Committee consisting of the following members — Joint Secretary (North-east), Ministry of Home Affairs; and two other members to be nominated by the Union government (one of whom should be a public figure),” it said. However, the court refrained from passing any direction on the proposal for amending the Indian Penal Code by insertion of two new provisions — sections 153C and 509A –which was opposed by the Centre on the ground that sections 153A, 153B and 505(2) already exist as a part

of the penal provision and covers the situation of racial crimes. Also, the court took note of the Centre’s submission that the proposal was under examination and said “whether the law should be amended is for the Union government to decide in its considered assessment of the situation, the nature of the problem and the efficacy of existing provisions. A mandamus to legislate cannot be issued.” The apex court pronounced the verdict while disposing of the petition filed by Karma Dorjee and others following several incidents of hate crimes in Delhi against persons hailing from the northeast. The petitioners had said that the Bezbaruah panel had recommended changes in the IPC to curb and punish incidents of racial violence targeting people from the northeast. The petition had alleged that people from north-eastern region, who move out of their states in search of better opportunities in studies and jobs, were subjected to racial taunts and violence on a daily basis due to their physical appearance at the hands of people of their own country.

Dubbing allegations that the minister used his influence to clear bills as “unsubstantiated, false and baseless”, the ministry said vigilance officer S C Verma, who alleged corruption in the construction of two dams for NEEPCO’s 600 MW Kameng Hydro Electric Project in Arunachal Pradesh, had himself authorised the release of substantial payments to the contractor.

IMPHAL, Dec 15: Manipur chief minister O Ibobi Singh Thursday inaugurated two newly created districts, Tengnoupal and Kangpokpi even as Nagas protested the creation of the new districts by staging rallies in four Naga inhabited hill districts. Amidst strong objection, Ibobi had inaugurated Jiribam district on Wednesday which was followed by inauguration of Tengnoupal and Kangpokpi districts today. Addressing the inaugural function at Tengnoupal district headquarters, Ibobi reiterated the reasons behind his government’s decision to create the new districts. The districts were being created for convenience of district administration,

he said. Also condemning the attacks on state police force hours ahead of his visit, Ibobi said that violent activities like attacking to police with arms will bring no good result. “Issues have to be settled through proper dialogue. There is no place for violence in a democratic setup,” he said. State deputy chief minister G Gaikhangam, revenue minister I Hemochandra, MLAs chiefs of various villages under the new districts and civil society leaders attended the inauguration function. Meanwhile, opposing the creation of seven new districts, Nagas in Manipur under the aegis of United Naga Council Thursday carried out protest demonstrations at the headquarters of four hills districts;

missioners. Effigies of chief minister O Ibobi Singh were burnt as part of the rallies. The rallies were organized under the banner of the UNC in protest against the creation of seven new districts “without consulting all stakeholders”. A statement of the UNC had earlier stated that the Naga body was formed to defend and protect the “ancestral homeland, identity, history, culture, tradition, custom and time honored institution of the Nagas”. The UNC said that it is a civil organization based on the democratic principles that honour all the communities and nationalities living elsewhere. “We expect respect and honour as we respect others,” the Naga body had added. In the statement UNC reiterated that the ongoing indefinite economic blockade including banning the construction of Trans Asian Railways was being imposed as the government of Manipur had utterly failed to honour and uphold the Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed between the Government of Manipur and Naga people as well as the written assurance given by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India on the issue.

On the other hand, BJP members shouted slogans while displaying copies of a news report which claimed that some people in the erstwhile United Progressive Alliance regime had allegedly received money in the AgustaWestland helicopter deal. ANPSA Zbto silent protest march

DIMAPUR: All Nagaland private schools’ Association (ANPSA) Zunheboto unit on Thursday staged a silent protest march at Zunheboto town against the multi-crore PDS scam, which was recently unearthed by a joint team of ACAUT and Concerned Citizens of Nagaland (CCN) in Dimapur. Extending strong support to the just cause initiated by ACAUT, the ANPSA unit alleged that the government of the day “chose to suppress the people’s movement with an iron hand” by arresting the ACAUT activists. It further called upon citizens to voice out the truth as indifference tantamount to complicity.

raise the issue of distress among farmers after demonetisation, was called by the Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien to speak but he could hardly make his submission as ruling party members created uproar. ”I have given the floor to the Leader of the Opposition. It is the convention of the House that when Leader of the Opposition or Leader of the House wish to speak, they are heard in silence,” Kurien said but BJP members did not heed. Union ministers too interjected as Azad rose to

speak with Information & Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu wanting to know what he wanted to say and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi saying the members of the ruling side want a discussion on the corruption issue. Kurien told Naidu that Azad had given a notice to raise farmers distress and even without a notice the Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the House are allowed to speak whenever they wish to speak. To Naqvi, he said the ruling side can give a notice to raise a discussion on the issue they want, and asked Azad to make his submission. Alleging that the Centre was anti-farmer and its policies were ruining crops, Azad said farmers are dying, their vegetables rotting and crops welting and they are not sowing seeds. Farmers in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and other states are facing grave distress and the Centre should waive off their loan, he demanded.

Sasikala to be next AIADMK chief CHE N NA I , D EC 1 5 (AGENCIES): Days after J Jayalalithaaa passed away, AIADMK has announced her closest aide Saikala Natarajan will replace her as the party chief. Jayalalithaa, who passed away on Monday evening after suffering cardiac arrest, was the party’s general secretary from 1989 to 2016. Sasikala, hailing from Mannargudi from Tanjavur, was living with Jayalalithaa in Poes Garden since 1991. With no ties to her own biological family, Jayalalithaa began to accept Sasikala as her sister and relied heavily on her support and counsel. AIADMK spokesperson Ponnaiyan on Thursday told that the rules will be amended if needed to place Sasikala in control. “It is the desire of the entire party,” he said, adding, “Sasikala has functioned as the conscience of Amma,” NDTV quoted him as saying.

Corruption, graft trademark... (Form p-1) NPF stand on ‘Good Governance Day’ vague: NPCC said NPF stand on declaration of Christmas day as “Good Governance Day” was still ambiguous and vague. NPCC said when it raised the matter that DAN government has not opposed the NDA government order, the NPF came out with a vague response and gone on record to say that NPF CEC has taken up the issue. Congress said if CEC took up the issue then it should be in public domain and speak up without hesitation and faltering. It said mere adoption of resolution would not help assuage hurt feelings of Christians in Nagaland, adding that NDA government would not take cognizance of that veiled resolution. NPCC said NPF has succumbed to manoeuvring of RSS and has completely “failed to thwart the Modi-RSS onslaught on Christianity.” Further, accusing TR Zeliang of being lenient towards Hindutva and RSS,

the Congress said he has virtually given them a free hand to assault on Christianity. NPCC maintained that Naga solidarity was tearing apart and disunity has surfaced as never before under an ineffective, corrupt and dictatorial regime. Meanwhile, NPCC claimed that “much-hyped” DAN legislators’ trip to Delhi for Naga political settlement turned out to be hoax. It said the trip was to impress the people that DAN government was committed towards a political settlement. NPCC said nothing was on record to substantiate their commitment except the one statement made by the chief minister TR Zeliang that Naga issue was nearing solution. Congress claimed that there seemed to be no spadework and no serious effort made by DAN government to facilitate the settlement. “Instead of working towards a solution the DAN government is gearing up for poll slated in 2018 and drumming up support for electoral gains,” NPCC said.

PDS scam: NLSF asks govt to deliver justice D I M A P U R , D EC 1 5 (NPN): Nagaland Law Students Federation (NLSF) has expressed dismay over the alleged PDS scam and appealed to the state government and law enforcing agency to deliver justice at the earliest. NLSF through its president Imliben Lemtur, speaker Nungshimeren and information and publicity secretary Ronald in a press statement also urged the state government not to shy away in ordering CBI inquiry, “If the government feels that they have not done anything wrong with regard to the PDS scam”. Rather, it questioned state government whether the people “don’t have the right to voice out against corruption?” NSLF asserted that Nagaland was not a dictatorial form of government and therefore, as stated in Article 19(1)(b) of the constitution of India, all citizens have the right to assemble peacefully and without arms.

ACAUT demands CBI probe; slams CM (From p-1) Terming it as absurd, in the way police objected to the protesters holding banners condemning T.R. Zeliang, Tinku and Nirmal, ACAUT reminded that it was a universal way of protest, where even effigies of political leaders are burnt. The violation of the fundamental rights and unlawful action of the police amounts to illegality, abuse of powers and clear violation of human rights, it added. ACAUT also said that the Nagaland police needed thorough training on the limits of their authority, “so that they can know what are their legal and constitutional orders and what are illegal and unconstitutional orders and not to follow unconstitutional orders”. “The brutality and abuse of the powers by state government using

its state machinery to crush the voice of the general public, voicing out against corruption is the strongest proof of corrupted government and further confirmation of chief minister trying to cover his corruption activities in the Food and civil supplies department in collusion with faceless conspirators operating within and from outside the state of Nagaland,” ACAUT stated. ACAUT said the bravery and determination shown by the people in the fight against corruption reflected the apathy and frustration of the present state of affairs in the state. New Delhi, Dec 15 (PTI): The Winter session of Parliament is on the verge of a washout as it failed to transact any business again on Thursday due to the standoff between the government and Opposition over demonetisation, AgustaWestland scam and some other issues. The session has only one day left. Even on the penultimate day on Thursday, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha continued to witness deadlock that began with the start of the session on November 16 over the manner in which a debate should be held on demonetisation and related aspects. The Rajya Sabha saw sharp exchanges between Treasury and Opposition members as they tried to outshout each other over different issues, throwing the House into pandemonium. The Opposition, led by Congress, said demonetisation along with vagaries of weather had hit the farmers and demanded farm loan waiver to give relief

It is a debt settlement issue between me and the Manipuri Truck driver Mr. Joy and Mr. Kewepe Wetsah is not involved. A Manipuri bound truck driver Mr. Tony was called upon by me to persuade his nephew Mr. Joy to return the money which he owes me. Mr. Joy took the money from me for logging business at his own risk. Art of getting away

t is a matter of concern, that the present NPFled DAN government has been engaged in fire fighting from one scandal to another when it should have dealt with transparency to book the guilty and not to protect them. There is a time to be flexible and a time to be firm. Against Corruption And Unabated Taxation(ACAUT) Nagaland has created a niche for itself when it started off as Action Committee Against Unabated Taxation(ACAUT) directed against the unending harassment, threats and intimidations faced by citizens who were being preyed upon for forcible collections by various outfits. In addition, ACAUT then also took up a very challenging task of unmasking the growing stranglehold of various syndicates that control each and every marketable item through a mafia-like grip and control. Public in almost all parts of Nagaland gave their overwhelming support to ACAUT on their endeavour to free society off activities by those who live off the sweat and brows of people. The government of Nagaland had to take the call and respond when the ball was tossed in its court by ACAUT when it set up an inquiry commission headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court. The recommendations of the commission is still to be made public. Of those issues that had the seized the interest of public was the mass offence called ‘backdoor appointments’ in almost every department. Nagaland has the highest number of people employed in the government in ratio to its population. It had been revealed that during 2011-12 the number of employees was 1,10,038 and by 201213 shot up to 1,20,819 and 2013-14 had shot up to around 1,40,000. The backdoor appointees are invariably regularised on the basis of having served for more than three years etc ACAUT took the government to court after which it was compelled to issue a memorandum making June 6,2016 as the cut off date after which any ad hoc appointment would be illegal but at the same time, legalised all past ad-hoc, contractual or backdoor appointments. Nothing more was heard after that. Interestingly on the same date the government issued its memorandum, the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers Organisation(NVCO) disclosed that there were 319 illegal appointments in the Health and Family Welfare department. Nothing was also heard about this matter. The ACAUT spearheaded Co-ordination Committee on Fuel Adulteration (CCoFA) conducted several raids on fuel adulteration and exposed the entire nexus. When government failed to order CBI probe, a bandh was organised. The organisers were picked and taken to custody but released after the chief minister sought time of seven days to order a comprehensive probe by SIT and if found unsatisfactory, an “independent inquiry” would be conducted. Nothing more was heard after that. The next was the raid on two godowns wherein it was found that two prominent non-Naga businessmen were running benami stockist firms for alleged diversion of PDS rice. A counter-FIR registered resulted in the complainants being jailed while the accused continue to remain scot free. Of the three issues, the adulteration racket involving SKO(kerosene) and raid of two godowns involving PDS(rice and wheat etc) are dealt with by the Food and Civil Supplies department, a portfolio looked after the chief minister. It remains to be seen how this issue would also be played out.

DailyDevotion “Approved to God” Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. —2 Timothy 2:15 If you cannot express yourself well on each of your beliefs, work and study until you can. If you don’t, other people may miss out on the blessings that come from knowing the truth. Strive to re-express a truth of God to yourself clearly and understandably, and God will use that same explanation when you share it with someone else. But you must be willing to go through God’s winepress where the grapes are crushed. You must struggle, experiment, and rehearse your words to express God’s truth clearly. Then the time will come when that very expression will become God’s wine of strength to someone else. But if you are not diligent and say, “I’m not going to study and struggle to express this truth in my own words; I’ll just borrow my words from someone else,” then the words will be of no value to you or to others. Try to state to yourself what you believe to be the absolute truth of God, and you will be allowing God the opportunity to pass it on through you to someone else. Always make it a practice to stir your own mind thoroughly to think through what you have easily believed. Your position is not really yours until you make it yours through suffering and study. The author or speaker from whom you learn the most is not the one who teaches you something you didn’t know before, but the one who helps you take a truth with which you have quietly struggled, give it expression, and speak it clearly and boldly.

Demand for Rengma district in Naga context

f not humanly then traditionally speaking, when a boy of family is grown into certain maturity to be independent, then there comes a set of obligation rather mandatory that begin to invite the very parents, together with the closed family members for a discussion for the future references of a boy without much delay, regarding of his yearly cultivation and crops, relationship towards neighbourhood or awaited in-laws as per traditions and customs, most importantly about bringing up of one’s own offspring becomes central core of issue. As such with no option but own him with separate house and marry him off quickly in consultation with bounded family members. If not. There is always a tendency of that boy behaving differently in the form of disobedience, irritating, non-cooperation and even to the extent of charging his own parents, the clear indication of his resentment, therefore his desires, aspiration and wishes are also to be understood minutely and granted at the end of the day as responsible parents. Likewise, today the demand for up gradation of full fledge administration headquarter of Tseminyu, (the oldest subdivision) to District headquarter appears to be keeping “Yarrow unvisited” which is safely and quietly preserving in a cold storage refrigerator wrapped in a “lackadaisical formula”. Which is not too encouraging rather highly questionable as far as my urgency and requirement are concerned, because I am already over aged for many years as per my document tells with valid and the recognised university where we studied together, therefore, it is a legitimate right of mine to know rather update myself with the latest position and development of my demand and requirement. Because delaying in meeting/fulfilling my urgency is no more required at any form, since no Nagas should be left behind as far as their unique identity, cultures and traditions are

co-existence in unison, thereby own me a separate home with beautiful wife, so that I can begin my family as well as my agricultural activities which may lead me to hoist even a “Feast of Merit” with your supports. Hereby “My requirement is my requirement” and “My urgency is my urgency” because I cannot deny myself anymore, so address it with utmost sincerity and top priority without further delay, As far as “Dignity and Prestige” of Nagas are concerned, the Rengmas have never ever been bow down or surrendered before anyone, even before the supremacy of British Raj under any circumstances since gone by days. To cite an example, in 1874 there was a battle called “Battle of Tesophenyu” it says during the chieftainship (Ponghon) of Mithong of Tesophenyu, when the British troops wanted to carry out the extensive tour of exploration through the jurisdiction of Tesophenyu, there, he firmly replied the inability of White man to pass through the conducive atmosphere of perfect unity set up under his leadership by saying “Neither man nor tiger had ever been allowed to pass by his country, so also shall allow not White men” Still then Dr. Brown and his men had forcefully violated the will of village chief by way of their supremacy, no doubt Tesophenyu fought as real warriors and gave tough reply with their naked spears and daos, besides erecting panjis (Akusu) in around the village, where some British were grievously injured while confronting, Even though the village suffered heavily, precious life were taken away, filled granaries and houses were burnt down into ashes, and yet whosoever or whatever it may be, this is the only strong opposition and war took place between the British troops and the Rengmas in Rengma country. While resisting, Mithong the chief of village was shot at his “Toe” by British sophisticated rifle, for which the village conscien-

tiously decided to escape him to one Tiger’s cave at Bonsuka Hill, now it is popularly known as Mithong Khvu (Cave) without any disputes where he died of injuries. Never mind the result of battle was quite humiliating and a great catastrophe one, but today one can proudly say that they fought well as a real Naga warriors or like Naga head hunters, and so it was nothing else or less but just for the unflinching love and protection of their beautiful mother land. Subsequently the village was annexed with no option and good numbers of artifacts and valuable items were taken away to River Pitt Museum London which must be return back to us, thereby, hope and pray that good sense prevail among us, that the government of India must recognise and uphold the courage and bravery, that village have shown in defending our mother land at the cost of precious blood from being exploitation by foreigners, so also the British as a gentleman also must tender unconditional apology once again, before Nagas for taken away precious life and rendered our forefathers homeless with no fault of theirs, so that even the departed souls are too compromised and may “Rest in Peace” in their fallen asleep. Recalling the past of Nagas in general and Rengmas in particular, the first European to see Rengma was Lieutenant Grange in 1839, at Mohung Dehooa in the plain region of Assam as per record and by 1848 Rengma village in the Mikhir Hills were already paying revenue, however, the villages in the Naga Hills remained unvisited and independent for many years, nevertheless in 1866 when an administrative base was set up at Samaguting (Chumukedima) by captain Gregory who was replaced by John Butler, the land of Rengma was the main source of formation of headquarter encompassing both the present neighbour states which cannot be denied nor neglected. Again in between 1914 – 18 when the first world war

( WW1) broke out, 200 (Two hundred) Rengma youths were chosen and sent to France (Europe) as a labour corps, who contributed immensely by way of their outstanding bravery and truthful which also speaks a big volume in the anal of Naga history, which is loudly and clearly mentioned in Memorandum submitted to the honourable Chief Minister of Nagaland, through the Additional Deputy Commissioner Tseminyu on 27th July 2016 during peace rally held under the umbrella of Rengma Hoho. Equally contributions have been made by Rengma people, if revisit the past of Naga history be it political or socio when the Nagas returned from Europe a club called Naga Club was formed in 1918, there Nrilo Rengma was one the active and founder members of club and Rusilo Rengma (Dobashi) was a signatory of the Memorandum submitted to Simon Commission on 10th Jan 1926, which was the first ever memorandum submission by Nagas. In the field of literature, Yonthongshuo of Tesophenyu (Dobashi) popularly known as Interpreter whom the British called Yanthangsao assisted James Philip Mills (J.P Mills) M.A the Indian civil service (ICS) Honorary Director of Ethnography Assam, then the Deputy Commissioner Naga Hills in bringing out the Rengma Naga, which was published in 1937 by Macmillan & Co. limited London. beyond doubt the responsibilities entrusted to him were carried out accordingly where himself toured around and settled quite many numbers of land disputes, including neighbouring Lothas and Semas, representing the Deputy Commissioner Naga Hills none other than Dr. J.H Hutton (Bor Shaha) however, death took him away untimely while serving the government in Kohima and even the mortal remain could not be taken to native place for burial due to transportation inconveniences, even though the full “Guard of

Honour” was accorded in memorial of rendering the services that till his last breathe. As Nagas also underwent various tests and trials from different angles, there no Rengmas have ever neglected the cause of Nagas, while supplementing or complementing the memorandum submitted at Tseminyu, the first Naga National Flag was solemnly hoisted in Rengma country on 22nd March 1956 at Parashen under the leadership of AZ Phizo, after reading out the following passages from the Holy Blble (1) Romans 8: 18 by Whenha Rengma (2) Gospel of St. Mathew 6: 33 by Khriesaneisa Angami and (3) Romans 8: 33 by Kruzhulie Angami and followed by National Anthem “God bless my Nagaland” as stated, the very first Naga hoisted flag was made rather woven by 4 (Four) Rengma women of Sendenyu on the advice of AZ Phizo. Of course sometime humanly forgotten yet Rengmas have equally lost many precious lives for the cause of Nagas. As such neither justification nor proofs are required as far as their supreme sacrifices and tortures are concerned. W h e r e b y, t o d a y a genuine demand for Rengma district may be considered as urgency and unavoidable basis, without hesitation and granting it shall clearly send out a good Message across the border too. Since the Rengmas are living in a rectangular strip of land between the Angamis on the south, the Semas on the east, the Lothas on the north, and the southern Rengmas living in Assam since the time immemorial which is known as Rengma Hills. The present population of Rengma stands at 56844 with 9152 households have every right to complain, and no one can deny that they have not been given their due-whether politically or socio-economically, further it may be mentioned here that when Nagaland was created as the 16th state under the Union of India by an act of parlia-

A reflection on my kitchen-hand-towel and Christmas (From previous issue) Jesus and kitchen hand towel: Jesus did not come to this world as an expensive coat suit. He came as a rag - like a kitchen hand towel. He was born into an ordinary manger much like the place where we keep our kitchen hand towel. He was not born in a luxurious palace even as we do not store hand-towel in cosy almirahs. He made himself available to all people. Had he been born in a palace, it would be not possible or too difficult for common people to come and see him. Kitchen hand towel is easily accessible by everyone even as Jesus did not refuse anyone (poor or rich, sinners, tax collectors, immoral men and women, Jews or gentiles). The rich people and the poor alike owned kitchen hand towel. Throughout his life, Jesus continuously served others like kitchen hand towel. He did not seek for fame and high status as coat suit. He did not ask others for a favour for the good deed he did for them. He dirtied his hand and cleansed others. He touched the wounds of the lepers and washed his disciple’s feet. He sacrificed his body to be broken so that we might become whole. Despite his immense service rendered

for the betterment of human beings, people rejected him like a torn piece of cloth. Coat suit people & dirty people: We, the coat suit people, ought to say ‘thanks’ to those who remained dirty to sustain our life. These dirty people formed the rags, fragments and the broken ones in our society. Even the old, differently disabled people, the sick, farmers, women, children, and others - are all important in one way or the other. They are no less important than the educated and the rich people even as kitchen hand towel is no less important than the costly coat or polished shined shoe. One should not look down on someone simply because their hands are dirty. In fact life continues because their hands are dirty working for us. It is the kitchen-hand-towel-section-of-people who produce food for us. They mend our broken shoes, dress our unscrupulous hair, clean our dirty clothes and so on. It is they who cook food for us during every special occasion. Their hands become dirty just for us. They sacrifice sleepless nights. They experience the brunt of wintry cold. They also struggle with the heat from fire as they cook food for

feast. Their clothes are dirty and they look messy. They do not eat the tasty portion of meat but reserve for others. This section of people certainly represents kitchen hand towel whose contribution remained invisible and unrecognised. One may say that cleanliness is next to Godliness. But only a dirty hand can lead people to God. In the end, a dirty hand that serves others is even better than the clean lips that preach. Kitchen hand towel and Christmas: On Christmas, Jesus became the kitchen hand towel for all people. So everyone must share this joyous occasion equally. We do not celebrate Christmas for Pastor or mission workers. It is not for Christmas speaker. It is not for big officer. It is for Jesus Christ. Everyone must be treated with equal respect and dignity. There cannot be class system in Christmas. A church chowkidar/ peon ought to be treated on a par with Pastor. A cooks for Christmas should not be treated as inferior to Christmas speaker. Christian ministers should not be treated as more important than a mere church member. A simple villager is not a lesser human being than a high salaried gentleman. Sadly so often,

we, coat suit people, steal this special occasion to make ourselves more important than others. We must become one with the kitchen-hand-towel people to make this Christmas a meaningful one. Christmas is truly a best time to recognise and acknowledge the dignity and value of each other. Let’s humble down and reconsider the value of small things that we possess. This may help us to understand the value of people of those whom we consider as rags, broken pieces and fragments in our society. Christmas will be truly meaningful only when we celebrate knowing that Jesus came for the least and the last ones. Hence, let us celebrate this Christmas by gathering all the rags, broken pieces and fragments in our society even as Jesus restored the meaning of the leftovers after feeding the five thousand men. Jesus came as a rag - giving meaning to life of those people of kitchen-hand-towel status. Be the kitchen-hand- towel and serve someone during this Christmas. By the way, who is going to eat the best portion of meat this Christmas? (Concluded) Z. K. Pahrü Pou, BTC, Pfutsero

ment, the Constitution (Thirteenth Amendment) Act 1962, the Interim Government (1961-62) had 2 (two) Legislative Assembly seats for Rengmas, but when the general assembly election was held in 1964, the Rengmas were deprived and cheated with only one out of two seats? Instead of allocating additional seats, which is highly questionable as far as equality or fairness is concerned, therefore the “Missing seat” must be restored immediately because every Naga must go hand in hand, while shouldering the responsibilities together both in gone by as well as present days in all aspects be it in administrative system, political system or socioeconomic system. So, today it is greatly felt that the aspirations and desires of Rengmas district Demand must be respected and protected beyond without compromising, in line with better understanding and coordination in a healthy environment, with no more Rally, Demand, Protest or Bandh, which brings untold suffering to the people in around. Besides consuming major portion of our own economy, resources, time and energy indirectly, instead of investing in a productive areas. Sometime it also invites unnecessary type of apprehension or mistrust towards one another with no reason. Rather let this demand of up gradation of “Rengma District” be one of the most peaceful and loving demanded district in Naga history, and let the “Rengma District” shall be called “Romantic District” of Nagaland with beautiful women and men around, since the time immemorial of British and the father of Naga (AZ Phizo) who could not resist the beautiful smiles of Rengmas, not forgetting the posted officials at Tseminyu to feel “At Home” with peace loving people around you, hence, make a Rengma district a reality as your own in united under the caption of “Denial of Rengma district is denial of justice to Nagas” David Jemu, Tesophenyu Village

Detectors arrested and criminals let loose

Sir,

While nullifying the facts finding steps taken by the ACAUT in relation to the recent imbroglio of PDS by giving false and concocted justification of replacing the plastics bag in lieu of torn jute bags while keeping in the concerned godown where the ACAUT team seized those alleged replaced plastics bags. It is quite open now that those wrongdoers in terms of law of the land are roaming freely while the facts finding detectors are put behind the bar in the present PDS crises. From the moment of detection of those plastics bags and thereupon the landing of the ACAUT to Judicial Custody, the ACAUT team were acting as the hunters to catch hold of the black marketers, however, to the astonishment of the right thinking citizen the ACAUT leaders have been put behind the bar without any realm and rhythm instead of booking the real culprit according to law by making an unfounded counter ‘FIR’. Such action is highly uncalled for and unwarranted. In this prevailing situation an independent impartial team like CBI or NIA should be made to indulge and deeply investigate into the scam and booked the culprits according to the laws of the land in order to give deserving punishment without further delay. It is also quite scandalous that the criminals were let loose while the detectors (hunters) have been arrested without any justification. Therefore, I on behalf of the GBs and Village Chiefs of Nagaland earnestly appeal the Government to act upon swiftly and promptly according to the law and immediately arrest the real culprits and not only the detectors and give a befitting punishment in the interest of justice of law. Earlier in the day, the Left and the Trinamool had found common ground -- on the streets before RBI’s regional office -- to protest against Patel. Banerjee’s party today had put out a list of demonetization deaths - putting the figure at 97. Seven of the deaths were from West Bengal. On that list was 52year-old Kallol Roy Chowdhury, a state government employee who suffered a heart attack as he stood in line for cash at an ATM on December 3. Mamata Banerjee has promised his wife a job. People have died across the country due to the cash ban, the Trinamool claims. Among them, retired CRPF soldier Rakesh Yadav who shot himself after failing to get money from banks and ATMs for daily expenses.

Patel had just reached the airport around 6 pm to fly out of the city when he was met by angry Congress workers bearing black flags. As the mob threatened to swamp him, Patel’s security staff just about managed to rush him into the airport with some difficulty. The Consumer Complaints Council or CCC had found that Patanjali’s claim for its ‘Kachi Ghani Mustard Oil’ that rival makers are selling mustard oil “adulterated with oil made by solvent extraction process with neurotoxin containing Hexane”, was not substantiated. Patanjali had also failed to substantiate its claims for Patanjali Fruit Juice, where it had claimed rival brands as “expensive juices containing less pulp”. Similarly, it also failed to substantiate its claims in the ad for cattle feed ‘Patanjali Dugdhamrut’ as “other companies mix 3 to 4 per cent urea and other non-edible things in their cattle feed.” In May this year, ASCI had rapped Patanjali Ayurveda for “false and misleading” claims in its various advertisements, including its hair oil and washing powder brands, while issuing list for month of March.

Patanjali has been asked to pay the fine within a month. A case had been filed in the court against the company in 2012 by the District Food Safety Department after samples of mustard oil, salt, pineapple jam, besan and honey produced by Patanjali Ayurveda had failed quality tests at Rudrapur laboratory. The products were found to be in violation of sections 52-53 of Food Security norms and section 23.1 (5) of Food safety and Standard (packaging and labelling) regulation. Silver too cracked below the Rs 41,000-mark by falling Rs 450 to Rs 40,950 per kg on poor offtake by industrial units and coin makers. L o n d o n, D e c 1 5 (Agencies): An operation to evacuate a rebel-held enclave in the Syrian city of Aleppo is now under way, Red Cross officials say. The ICRC is bringing out 200 wounded people. A fleet of ambulances and buses was also seen heading into eastern areas as part of a wider evacuation. Fighters and civilians had been due to leave on Wednesday, but an earlier ceasefire collapsed. Government forces took nearly all remaining rebel-held parts of Aleppo this week after a four-year battle. Syrian state TV said that “4,000 rebels and their families would be evacuated from eastern districts on Thursday”, adding that “all the procedures for their

evacuation are ready”. A statement from the Russian Centre for the Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in Syria, part of Russia’s ministry of defence, said the Syrian authorities had guaranteed the safety of all members of the armed groups who decided to leave Aleppo. Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia Muslim movement backing the Syrian government, said there had been “big complications” but that “intensive contacts between the responsible parties... led to re-consolidating a ceasefire to exit armed fighters from eastern districts in the next few hours”. The rebels confirmed a new truce had come into effect at 03:00 GMT and that a new deal had been

agreed. Russia’s defence ministry has said buses will take the injured, civilians and rebel fighters to the neighbouring province of Idlib, most of which is controlled by a powerful rebel alliance that includes the jihadist group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham. The buses will reportedly leave Aleppo on the road through the government-controlled south-western district of Ramousseh heading towards the rebelheld town of Khan Touman, only about 8km (5 miles) away. Hamish de BrettonGordon, director of Doctors Under Fire, said its plan was to take the wounded to its main hospital 25km away, over the Turkish border.

Drugs worth $239 mn torched in Pak

Islamabad, Dec 15 (IANS): A staggering 51 tonnes of drugs, including heroin and cocaine, were burnt by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) in Rawalpindi on Thursday. The narcotics torched at the ceremony were estimated to be worth $239 million. These were seized in raids carried out by the ANF and from smugglers at airports during 2016.

At the ceremony, ANF Director General Maj. Gen Nasir Dilawar Shah said the force has arrested 1,479 smugglers in the last 10 years -- 505 of whom have been sentenced. He said Pakistan has been free of poppy since 2005, and added that in the past decade, 298 tonnes of narcotics worth $896 million have been set on fire. He said drugs were being produced and smuggled the most in Afghanistan.

Dhaka, Dec 15 (PTI): Toughening her stance against fundamentalist groups like Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has warned that those who had sided with Pakistan Army and rehabilitated war criminals during the country’s 1971 liberation war will be tried. “Those who had handed them the flag of independence are also equally responsible for their crimes. They will also be tried like the war criminals on the soil of Bangladesh,” she said. “Now it is time to try those who had sided with and rehabilitated the war criminals,” she said at a discussion organised by the ruling party to mark Martyred Intellectuals Day yesterday. But she did not specify any timeframe for doing so. Hasina noted that the war crimes trial in Bangladesh will continue like that of World War II in Germany. “No strategy or conspiracy will save them. Because this is the path of justice. Truth and justice always prevail,” bdnews quoted her as saying. “The Pakistani forces would have never been able to know the alleys of Bangladesh had some disgraceful people not been born among us,” Hasina said.

Putin is world’s most powerful man

New York, Dec 15 (Agencies): Vladimir Putin was the world`s most powerful person for a fourth straight year in 2016, Forbes magazine said on Wednesday in its annual rankings. US President-elect Donald Trump is in the second place. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi ranks ninth on the Forbes list of 74 of the World’s Most Powerful People. “Russia`s President has exerted his country`s influence in nearly every corner of the globe,” the US business magazine wrote. “From the motherland to Syria to the US Presidential Elections, Putin continues to get what he wants.” The 64-year old Russian leader is “unconstrained by conventional global norms (and) his reach has magnified in re-

cent years,” Forbes said. The magazine wrote that at number two, Trump, who takes over the US presidency in a little more than a month, “has a seeming immunity to scandal, both houses of Congress on his side, and a personal net worth in the billions.” Trump, who was elected US president last month, was listed 72nd in Forbes` 2015 power rankings. Third place this year went to German Chancellor

Angela Merkel, who has been at the helm of Europe`s economic powerhouse for 11 years and announced plans to run for re-election next year. Barack Obama, who placed second in 2015, plummeted to 48th place this year as he waits out the final weeks of his presidency, with his Democratic Party ousted from the White House after Trump`s shock election win and out of power in Congress. The list includes China`s President Xi Jinping on the 4th spot, Pope Francis (5), Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates (7), Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (10), French President Francois Hollande (23), Apple CEO Tim Cook (32), North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (43) and ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (57).

Senator hits out at Trump’s Secy pick over Russia ties

Washington, Dec 15 (IANS): A senior Republican Senator has said he would not support any Cabinet nominees of President-elect Donald Trump who oppose sanctions against Russia. His remarks were aimed at US State Secretary-nominee Rex Tillerson, who is CEO of oil giant Exxon Mobil, and is known to have close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I can’t imagine I would vote for anybody that believes that we should not sanction Russia given the fact that they did interfere in our election,” Xinhua news agency quoted Lindsey Graham as saying in an interview on CNN.

‘One billion’ accounts affected by Yahoo hack

Lo n d o n, D e c 1 5 (Agencies): Yahoo has said more than one billion user accounts may have been affected in a hacking attack dating back to 2013. The internet giant said it appeared separate from a 2014 breach disclosed in September, when Yahoo revealed 500 million accounts had been accessed. Yahoo said names, phone numbers, passwords and email addresses were stolen, but not bank and payment data. The company, which is being taken over by Verizon,

passwords and security questions. The California-based company has more than a billion monthly active users, although many people have multiple accounts. There are also many accounts that are little used or dormant. Cyber security expert Troy Hunt told the BBC: “This would be far and away the largest data breach we’ve ever seen. In fact, the 500 million they reported a few months ago would have been, and to see that number now double is unprecedented.” Yahoo said some of the

breach could be linked to state-sponsored activity, as with the previous attack. Prof Peter Sommer, a specialist in digital forensics at Birmingham City University, said he could be persuaded it was a statesponsored hack, “but at the moment I’m not”. In September, when Yahoo disclosed the 2014 data breach, the company said information had been “stolen by what we believe is a state-sponsored actor”, but it did not say which country it held responsible.

She must win the third game against the ruthless Spaniard, the oppoenent who defeated her in the Rio Games title showdown.

In the game against Sun, Sindhu lacked sharpness and that reflected in her poor challenges to the Chinese’s delectable drop shots and half smashes. Sindhu trailed from the beginning and never managed to equalise. At the beginning, she was trailing 3-7 and the best she managed to bridge the gap was at 8-10. But Sun ran away with four straight points to stand at 14-8 before dropping a point and then again notching six points to be at 20-9. Sindhu tried to delay the inevitable as she registered six straight points. But it was only a matter of point for Sun and the Chinese sealed the game at 21-15. In the second though, Sindhu improved her game and fought for each point against Sun. But the Chinese was clearly the better player. She took a 5-2 lead but Sindhu equalised at fivepoint mark. Afterwards, Sun led and Sindhu was always trailing. The Indian trailed until the 15-point mark where she equalised but Sun was determined to finish the match in the second game. Sindhu gave fight for only two more points and conceded the game 17-21.

The Frenchman finished clinically with the outside of his right boot after a deft pass from Toni Kroos. Ronaldo, who won his fourth Ballon d’Or earlier this week, had already squandered a gilt-edged

Lu c k n ow, D e c 1 5 (IANS): Home favourites India overcame Spain 2-1 to set up a semi-final clash against Australia in the Hockey Junior World Cup at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium here on Thursday. Marc Serrahima’s successful penalty conversion had given Spain a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute. But India fought back in the second half with penalty corner conversions from Simranjeet Singh (57th) and Harmanpreet Singh (66th) to march into the last four stage. After this win, Harendra Singh-coached India will face the task of going past Australia, who got the better of European power-

house the Netherlands 2-1. The last time India reached the semi-final of the tournament was in 2005 in Rotterdam. They had finished fourth then. The other semi-final will be played between double defending champion Germany and Belgium. While Germany eased past England 4-2, Belgium edged past Argentina 4-1 (1-1) via penalty shoot-out. The match between India and Spain turned out to be a tough fight and the European team stifled the hosts with strong man-toman marking. India got a couple of penalty corners but due to technical flaws like poor

trapping and bad execution, they were not fruitful. Spain, meanwhile took the lead after earning a penalty corner in the 22nd minute. Serrahima’s powerful flick to the right low corner beat Indian goalkeeper Vikash Dahiya to give Spain a 1-0 lead, much to the frustration of the decent crowd in attendance. Spain managed to keep their lead till the half-time and in the second half, it seemed the equaliser was difficult to come by as the Indians kept making a mess of penalty corner opportunities. But in the 57th minute, it changed. Even though it was a poorly executed penalty corner, Sumit managed to

hit a powerful blow straight at the Spanish goalkeeper Albert Perez, who blocked it before the ball popped out. Simranjeet tapped the ball in quickly before the goalkeeper could react to make it 1-1. After the equaliser, the confidence of the Indians grew and with the crowd behind them, they pushed hard for the lead. Nine minutes later, Harmanpreet made amends for his earlier mistakes to fire a grounder past Perez to make it 2-1 as the crowd erupted in joy. The strike marked the third goal for Harmanpreet, who was being criticised for his poor penalty corner conversions.

Conte’s men are six points clear of Liverpool, who stole above Arsenal into second place courtesy of a 3-0 win at Middlesbrough in which Adam Lallana scored twice. Having seen his side beaten 4-3 at Bournemouth and then held to a 2-2 draw by West Ham United, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp dropped goalkeeper Lorus Karius for Simon Mignolet. His side went ahead in the 29th minute

when Lallana headed in from England team-mate Nathaniel Clyne’s rightwing cross. Lallana teed up Divock Origi to add a second on the hour and eight minutes later the Belgian returned the favour as Lallana claimed his second goal. pulled up the BCCI for trying to mislead the court and warned Thakur that he may land in jail if the apex court pronounces its order in perjury proceedings. “Why are you trying to mislead the court? If you want to escape perjury charges, you ought to apologise. At every stage you have been trying to obstruct. Everyone wants to go around and continue to hold the post even after 70 years. This is such a lucrative business that everyone wants to go on forever. “Freedom of expression allows you to disagree with the order but you can’t obstruct implementation of order. Once we pronounce the order

(in perjury proceedings), you will have no other place to go except jail,” the court said. The top court also referred to a letter by the current ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar and said even he has said that Thakur had asked for such a letter, which he had refused. While the bench was dwelling on the issue of Justice R M Lodha panel’s suggestion to appoint former Home Secretary G K Pillai as an observer of BCCI, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the board, said, “we have strong reservations but I don’t want to come out with the reason in public domain”.

L O N D O N, D e c 1 5 (Agencies): Cesc Fabregas’s goal earned Chelsea a 1-0 victory at Sunderland on Wednesday - their 10th in succession - as Antonio Conte’s side surged six points clear at the Premier League summit. Fabregas, who came in for Nemanja Matic, curled in from Willian’s 40th-minute cut-back to establish Chelsea’s longest winning run within the same league campaign since 2005-06. Chelsea, for whom Eden Hazard missed out due to a knock, have won all 10 league games they gave played since losing 3-0 at Arsenal on September 24,

Pogba rolled Yohan Cabaye before slipping a ball through to the Sweden international in past the Palace defence where he slotted home past the keeper from an acute angle.

New Delhi, Dec 15 (PTI): The Supreme Court threatened to initiate contempt and perjury proceedings against BCCI President Anurag Thakur for asking the ICC CEO for a letter but denying it on oath, warning he may have to go to jail if found guilty. The court reminded the BCCI top brass that Thakur as President of the board had asked for a letter from ICC CEO Dave Richardson that the appointment of a CAG nominee in the cricket body would compromise with autonomy and amount to government interference.
