Homecomers boost to state Cong

DIMAPUR, MAR 8 (NPN): In a major political development, several veteran Congress leaders have returned to the party fold and more significantly, the “homecoming” event was addressed by the senior most and surviving veteran Naga politician and fivetime chief minister and former Governor Dr. S.C. Jamir, It may be noted that Dr. Jamir was at the helm of affairs when the current leaders of both the NDPP and NPF were also in the Congress till 2002/2003. The homecoming of former Congress leaders was a big psychological boost to the party rank and file although it remains to be seen if the party, which has been on a nose dive can politically resurrect itself. At a programme at the DDCC office to welcome 21 former Congress leaders- some of whom had joined the NPF and some who had formed Nagaland Congress, rejoined Congress (Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee) here on Friday, veteran Naga leader Dr. S.C. Jamir accused regional parties of bringing bankruptcy to

NL road parking fee: DCCI backs NLRBA DIMAPUR, MAR 8 (NPN): Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) Friday extended its support to the stand taken by Nyamo Lotha Road Business Association (NLRBA) against levying parking fees on vehicles along Nyamo Lotha (NL) Road, Dimapur. In a press release, DCCI said it must have been Regional Transport Authority (RTA)’s decision to levy parking fee and let DMC monitor the system. DCCI, however, said monitoring parking was not the DMC’s duty. It said duty and responsibility of a municipal body was to first look into sanitation and other developmental issues. Instead of utilising its manpower in those areas, DCCI asked “why is the DMC interested in monitoring parking tax and ready to deploy 30 staff for the tax.” DCCI also supported the charges made by NLRBA that the move to levy parking fee only at NL Road hampers business. It said there were also other road stretches where vehicle parking was “messy” and with congested traffic. DCCI has, however, appealed to NLRBA to keep in abeyance its decision to down shutters, saying it would discuss the matter with the appropriate authority.

governance and commercialisation in politics and that Nagas were blinded by materialism. Dr. Jamir lamented that Nagas had been blinded by materialism and allowed BJP to win an unprecedented 12 seats while other North Eastern States, barring Assam, had managed to checkmate the party. He opined that Naga society was in a delirium, adding that NPF was already exhausted while NDPP was only a “stop gap arrangement” to fool the people.

Dr. Jamir said Congress workers should have the courage to tell truth to the people and articulate very clearly that the party can serve, help and lead them. He remarked that the induction programme was being held at an opportune time, adding Congress was solidified. He called for shunning dissents and internal bickering within the party. Claiming that Congress was a party with vision and clear ideology, he asserted that the party would never be uprooted, even as he urged the party

NPF MLAs term NDPP reaction as ‘knee jerk’

DIMAPUR, MAR 8 (NPN): Responding to the ruling NDPP’s rejection of an internal proposal `by 19 NPF legislators addressed to the NPF legislature party chief T.R. Zeliang to explore an opportunity for an alliance of regional parties (NPF and NDPP) ; NPF described the NDPP reaction as a “knee jerk reaction”. The NPF legislators had asked Zeliang to explore alliance between the two regional parties prior to the Lok Sabha elections as it was genuinely concerned over the burning issues of Naga political solution, Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016y and the political polarisation in the region. NPF said the legislators who met at Kohima decided to write an internal letter to Legislature Party leader to hold consultation with party president on the possibility

of a regional party alliance within the State before the Lok Sabha election. It also felt that any effort for a coalition should be through “a front door approach and not through backdoor approach”. On March 6, a signed letter by 18 NPF legislators addressed to the NPF legislature party leader, T.R. Zeliang, mooted for a “coalition of regional parties- NPF (26 MLAs) and NDPP (17 MLAs). The 18 NPF legislators in their letter to T.R. Zeliang, cited the need to have a stable regional coalition in Nagaland to deliver the goods and “face any eventualities in the upcoming Lok Sabha election”. They also urged upon the party leader to “initiate necessary steps” to realize the objective as cited by formalizing modalities for a regional alliance with NDPP leadership.

workers to be active and propagate the programmes and policies of Congress. In his welcome speech, NPCC president K Therie welcomed the former Congress leaders to the party. Stating that Congress belonged to everyone, Therie expressed hope that with the joining of former leaders, the party would put up a united fight to “combating the BJP and its regional cohorts.” Therie disclosed that more leaders were expected to rejoin the party in the coming days. He also expressed

KOHIMA, MAR 8 (NPN): Nagaland joined rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day on Friday. A function was held at secretariat conference hall here in the afternoon, which was attended by chief secretary Temjen Toy. Speaking on the occasion, Toy asserted that Naga women performed better than men in every aspect and urged them to continue working hard and surge ahead to bring change in the State. He said half of the State’s population comprised women, and called for giving them equal rights. He regretted that domestic violence against women still took place in Nagaland, even as he thanked the 181 women helpline that provides 24hour emergency response to all affected women. He exuded confidence that sooner

than later women would be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts. In her keynote address, social welfare department secretary Sarah Ritse highlighted key schemes for women like the Mahila Shakti Kendra (MSK) under the Union Women and Child Development ministry. Ritse explained that the scheme would provide an interface for rural women to approach the government for availing their entitlements and empower them through awareness generation, training and capacity building, while student volunteers would encourage the spirit of voluntary community service and gender equality. In this regard, she said the State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW) would provide technical support to the government on issues related to women,

gratitude to all those party workers who have suffered for 16 years in opposition. Delivering shor t speeches, S.I. Jamir, Z Lohe, and Joshua Sumi expressed their happiness in rejoining back Congress fold. They appealed to let past misunderstandings be forgotten as Congress would have to put up a united fight to protect secularism and rescue people of the state by providing a viable alternative in the form of rejuvenated Congress. Giving concluding remarks, NPCC general secretary Capt. GK Zhimomi said that it was a tough decision when some Congress leaders differed with the party decision and decided to part ways more than three years ago. However, he said today’s rejoining of those former leaders puts all past bitterness to rest. Urging party leaders to look at the larger picture ahead, Zhimomi expressed hope that Congress would progress to greater heights with a united stand to deliver hope to downtrodden and suppressed people of Nagaland.

AIZAWL, MAR 8 (AGENCIES): Mizoram Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan has resigned nine months into his job to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Kerala. He is likely to fight against Congress parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor from Thiruvananthapuram. “I have resigned as the party wished that I should be in Kerala. I also wished to be in Kerala and hence I have quit,” Rajasekharan told a TV channel, Friday, according to IANS. Rajasekharan was made the chief of the BJP’s Kerala unit in 2015 before he was appointed Governor of Mizoram in May 2018. President Ram Nath Kovind has accepted his resignation, the Rashtrapti Bhavan said in a statement. “The senior leader from Kerala will be contesting the Lok Sabha polls,” said a source in the BJP who asked not to be named. Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi has been given additional charge of Mizoram, the Rashtrapti Bhavan said.

Congress demands probe into ‘missing’ Rafale files; AG now says file not stolen

PANAJI, MAR 8 (PTI): Congress president Rahul Gandhi Friday said probe into the “missing” Rafale papers should start from Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who had claimed files related to the deal were with him. Parrikar was Defence Minister when the Rafale deal was signed with France. Centre has told the Supreme Court some documents related to the multibillion contract have been “stolen”. Taking potshots at the BJP-led ruling coalition in Goa, Gandhi said like the government has “disappeared” in the coastal state, Rafale papers, too, have gone missing. Gandhi was addressing booth-level party workers under the banner `Jeet Ki Aur’ near here. “Like the government has disappeared from Goa, the files, too, have disappeared. If you want to inquire then start it from Parrikar,” he said. “Parrikar had told Cabinet that Rafale files are with him,” Gandhi said referring to a purported audio conversation between Goa minister Vishwajit Rane and an unknown caller that had references to the deal. AG now claims Rafale documents not stolen from Defence ministry: A day after claiming in the Supreme Court that the documents on Rafale deal had been stolen from the defence ministry, Attorney General KK Venugopal has gone back on his word. He now claims that the papers were not stolen

and what he meant to tell the apex court was that petitioners demanding a probe into the deal had used “photocopies of the original papers”, which have been deemed secret by the government. “I am told that the opposition has alleged what was argued (in SC) was that files had been stolen from the Defence Ministry. This is wholly incorrect. The statement that files have been stolen is wholly incorrect,” he told PTI, in an apparent damage-control exercise. At the open hearing on Wednesday, Venugopal told the SC that the “documents relied on by the petitioners in their review petitions were stolen from the ministry and should not be relied on”. “It’s a criminal act on the part of petitioners to bring these documents with them. They have come with unclean hands,” Venugopal had said. His comments in the apex court on Wednesday had caused a political storm, with Congress president Rahul Gandhi leading the opposition parties in targeting the government. INS slams govt’s stand on Rafale reportage: Indian Newspaper Society (INS),

the apex body of the print media industry, Friday expressed its outrage over the government’s stand before the Supreme Court on Rafale deal reportage and called for repealing of the Official Secrets Act (OSA). INS statement came days after attorney general KK Venugopal sought dismissal of a petition for a review of Supreme Court’s earlier judgment on Rafale deal on the ground that the fresh plea relied on documents “stolen” from Defence Ministry and that investigations were going on to find out if it was a crime and violative of the OSA. “The INS has expressed its shock and outrage at the reported threat of action under the draconian Official Secrets Act against The Hindu. The threat made in the Supreme Court by the Attorney General, who had appeared on behalf of the government in the Rafale case hearing, is unconscionable and utterly unacceptable in a democracy,” the statement said. INS has asked the government and political parties to come together and “repeal the antediluvian law” as it is sought to be used against the media for publishing “unpalatable truths about the government”. This law has no place in a democracy where the freedom of press to report on governance and administrative decisions is constitutionally protected. The protection extends to the confidentiality of sources, it said.

M’laya Cong boycotts Governor’s address

Correspondent

Shillong, Mar 8: In a stormy start to the Budget session, Opposition Congress on Friday boycotted Governor Tathagata Roy’s address to the Meghalaya assembly as a mark of protest over his recent tweets supporting for calls of boycotting of “everything Kashmiri” following the terror attack at Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir that killed 40 CRPF jawans. Emerging out from an emergent Congress Legislature Party meeting, Leader of Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma told reporters that his legislature party decided to boycott the Governor’s address saying that his tweet has created a rift in the nation. The former Chief Minister also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s failure to sack Governor Roy’s following his “anti-national” messages. “… he tweeted saying that all the Kashmiri goods should be boycotted, people should not visit Kashmir. Does it overwhelmed for the nation when a person holding a constitutional post not less than a Governor of a state can engage in this kind of message which is capable of creating a rift among the citizens of the nation,” Sangma said. “When there is a terrorist attack, the nation fight is against the terrorists not against the community or people, Will such people like the governor, if there is an event of such ter-

Protest against eviction drive at Lankaijan reserved forest in KA Correspondent

Diphu, Mar 8: Eviction drive in Langkaijan area of Karbi Anglong in the inter-district border of Karbi Anglong and Hojai had to be suspended following stiff resistance and protest on Friday which resulted in resorting to baton-charge. According to magistrate on duty,

Norsing Bey, police resorted to baton charge to tackle the situation. Security forces later recovered large quantity of sharp weapons from the site. Earlier, despite protest approximately 10 illegal constructions were dismantled. The eviction drive was carried out by officials and staff of Land Revenue department, forest department of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council

assisted by police, para military and executive magistrate. It may be noted that the reserved forest land is located within general area of Lankai Jan around 30 kilometers from Diphu HQs and administrated by Phuloni revenue circle. The whole government land has been allegedly occupied by doubtful Bangladeshi nationals who are utilizing the occupied land for agricultural

purpose. Karbi Anglong’s additional deputy commissioner Norsing Bey and magistrates Karpun Patir, Kilunteule Zeme and Mukur Borah; superintendent of police (SP) Gaurav Upadhyay; additional SP (Headquarter) Indranil Baruah and KAAC deputy secretary in charge of land revenue Michael Timung and secretary Tensing Rongpi led the eviction team.

rorist attack in the northeast states and tell the people to boycott northeast, boycott the goods of northeast. These are the kind of people who are dividing the nation and trying to give fodder to the anti-national forces,” Sangma added The veteran Congress leader expressed concern over the lynching of Kashmiris across the country following the terror attack and Governor’s Roy tweet. “If a Governor who is holding a constitutional post is making such a narrative, what is going to happened to the nation if he say there is a bomb blast in northeast, boycott all the goods of the northeast , boycott all the northeast. What is he ultimately going to achieve. He is going to achieve the agenda of all anti-nationals who have the designed to disintegrate this nation,” Sangma stated. Noting that Prime Minister should have pull out the governor following his “antinational” message, the Leader of Opposition said,” he (Roy) should have been remove from the office in the best interest of the nation to send a strong message and to vindicate what he said to the nation.”

Shillong-based Editor, publisher fined for Court contempt Correspondent

DC-349

SHILLONG, MAR 8: Meghalaya HC on Friday held the Editor of The Shillong Times Patricia Mukhim and her publisher Shobha Chaudhuri, guilty of contempt of court and sentenced them to sit in the corner of the court room till the rising of the court. Diposing a case of contempt, a division bench of Chief Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir and Justice Sudip Ranjan Sen said, “In exercise of the power vested on us by Article 215 of the Constitution of India, we sentence both the contemnors to sit in the corner of the court room till the rising of the court and impose a fine of Rs 2 lakh each which is to be deposited with the Registry within a week and then to be deposited in the welfare fund of this high court.” In default of the payment, the court said both the contemnors will have to undergo six month simple imprisonment and the paper will be “banned”. Counsels, S. Dey, N. Syngkon, K. Ch Gautam and C.H. Mawlong volunteered as Amicus Curiae in the case, while K. Paul and S Thapa represented the contemnors. The contempt proceeding was initiated against the English daily on the basis of two reports published on December 6, 2018 and December 10, 2018 under the caption “When judges judge for themselves” and “High Court pursues retirement benefits to judges, family”. The report had claimed that according to the order, Sen, who incidentally retired on Friday, wanted several provisions for retired chief justices and judges and their spouses and children. “Besides providing medical facilities for the spouses and children, the order stressed the need for providing protocol, guest houses, domestic help, mobile/internet charge at the rate of Rs 10,000 and mobile for Rs 80,000 for judges,” the newspaper had published. On March 1, Mukhim and Chaudhuri filed two affidavits in the registry without any permission and later tendered unconditional apology, which the court observed to be “calculated strategy so as to avoid punishment”. “The contemnors all along have contested the matter and finally the realising that the contest is not in their better interest have tendered unconditional apology at the last moment. The contemnors being responsible persons should not have indulged in the acts falling within the purview of derogation to the administration of justice,” the bench noted. Moreover, the Court also found that Mukhim has made derogatory comment “Will God reserve the choicest of abuses for us journalists? That’s what the earthly God to believe” in the social media December 17, 2018. “When She (Mukhim) was confronted the on February 25, 2019 for those remarks, she had no answer,” the Court noted.

OPINiON/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post Vol. XXIX NO. 91 Dimapur, SATURDAY, MARCH 9, 2019

I

Political chess

t was long expected that having been made to sit out in the opposition, the NPF which had enjoyed continuous power from 2003 to 2017 for three terms, would soon be facing difficulties in remaining “intact” the very words used by the party media cell while reacting to the news published in Nagaland Post regarding fresh crisis within. A day after the NPF rejoinder, it was ironic that over 20 of its MLAs began to take shelter in a luxury hotel in Kohima to ask its leader (T.R.Zeliang) to forge a coalition of regional parties (NPF with NDPP) in the state. The reasons for the demand appear to be for “delivering” goods to the people and also in view of the changing national political scenario on the eve of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The changing political scenario may be explained as borne by a series of poll surveys conducted in recent months which indicate that the ruling BJP which won a massive mandate of 282 MPs was unlikely to win a majority and could even be elbowed out by a combination of non-NDA political parties. The NPF has 26 MLAs presently and according to sources, a spark was lit two days ago when a senior NPF leader had disclosed that he could be leaving the party. In this regard, it was also speculated that some six to seven of them were willing to go along with the leader to join the NDPP. The NDPP has 18 members and if there are six or seven from NPF defecting to the party, then these will attract the provisions of the Anti Defection Law. It requires at least 18 NPF members to cause a split in the legislature for the formation of a new group prior to eventual merger with NDPP. After the recent February 27,2018 the verdict was inconclusive though the PDA alliance of NDPP and BJP won a total of 30 seats. The NPF in alliance with NPP won a total of 28 seats. The lone independent and JDU then gravitated to the PDA and which led to panic rush by NPP. The PDA depends wholly on the support of the four MLAs from NPP(2) and one each from the JDU and Independent. On the face of it, the position of the PDA is precarious but not necessarily under threat. Members within NPF are not exactly as united as the party would like others to believe and that is not unusual. In fact both party president Dr.Shürhozelie and legislature party leader T.R.Zeliang have had huge differences with regard to having any truck with the BJP. Both find themselves in the same platform by circumstances after their bitter split in June-July 2017 when Zeliang pulled the rug from underneath Dr.Shürhozelie after the latter won the July 29 bypoll. Dr.Shürhozelie shot down any proposal for a tie up with the BJP while T.R.Zeliang wanted to continue. The BJP then took advantage of the situation by making big demands for seats. It eventually aligned with the NDPP which offered the party(BJP) 20 seats whereas the NPF offered 5 seats. Since 2014 the NPF was shaken by crisis four times-2014,2015,2016 and 2017. Now that over 20 NPF legislators have made their move, the NDPP cannot ignore the offer for long and that could be known by May 2019.

DailyDevotion The Surrendered Life I have been crucified with Christ… —Galatians 2:20 To become one with Jesus Christ, a person must be willing not only to give up sin, but also to surrender his whole way of looking at things. Being born again by the Spirit of God means that we must first be willing to let go before we can grasp something else. The first thing we must surrender is all of our pretense or deceit. What our Lord wants us to present to Him is not our goodness, honesty, or our efforts to do better, but real solid sin. Actually, that is all He can take from us. And what He gives us in exchange for our sin is real solid righteousness. But we must surrender all pretense that we are anything, and give up all our claims of even being worthy of God’s consideration. Once we have done that, the Spirit of God will show us what we need to surrender next. Along each step of this process, we will have to give up our claims to our rights to ourselves. Are we willing to surrender our grasp on all that we possess, our desires, and everything else in our lives? Are we ready to be identified with the death of Jesus Christ? We will suffer a sharp painful disillusionment before we fully surrender. When people really see themselves as the Lord sees them, it is not the terribly offensive sins of the flesh that shock them, but the awful nature of the pride of their own hearts opposing Jesus Christ. When they see themselves in the light of the Lord, the shame, horror, and desperate conviction hit home for them. If you are faced with the question of whether or not to surrender, make a determination to go on through the crisis, surrendering all that you have and all that you are to Him. And God will then equip you to do all that He requires of you.

Post-mortem

In the quest for a ‘man of tomorrow’

T

he College where I ‘teach’ and ‘learn’ has a very thought provoking motto-“Strive for excellence”. This Motto of Tetso College and my life story has matched perfectly only to be ended up in forming an unbreakable romantic bond. Striving for an Excellence is not an easy task as it requires an absolutely uncompromising attitude, unshakable personal standing, firm desire to sacrifice and absolute faith in individual convictions. In the context of the Naga students and all those students who have been the victims of the history, who have been shouldering the burden of the past, who belong to persecuted-discriminated-hated communities; the meaning of ‘Excellence’ goes far beyond individual aspirations, dreams, achievements and goals. The Children of the darkness are the torch bearers for their people. They are the ones who are destined to shoulder sacred responsibility to guide their people from the darkness to the glorious light. Be it Untouchable Dalit or the suppressed Tribal communities, their children are the second generation people who are going to school, to college and to the universities. The people from marginalized communities have understood that the education is the key to liberation from the quicksand of injustice, poverty, humiliation and sorrows. “Our” children are truly not that privilege to have careless, carefree, vagabond, materialistic attitude towards their life. They should know that they are the products of struggle and sorrows of their ancestors. Whatever little has been achieved-socially, economically or politically has been achieved at the cost of blood, sweat and sorrows of their forefathers. Therefore, to take the society ahead, our children should prepare themselves with the weapon of education and knowledge. They should understand that the end purpose of education is not to get some job and earn salary, but to help their people who are still crippled; to rise and stand on their own feet. God does not come to Earth personally to help the

I

people. He sends his angels to perform the task. Our children should understand that they are the chosen angels by the God to perform the sacred task to give direction to the people wandering in the eternal darkness. It has been seen for e.g. Our Naga society that it has progressed a little bit with education. Some persons have reached higher positions after getting education however, the socio-economic disparity increased as well. In Naga society a healthy middle class does not exists. This is truly a matter of concern, which proves that the society has still a long way to go. The lack of intellectual class in relatively infant society like that of the Nagas in the scale of the context of modern sociopolitical-economic evolution is also a major question that needs to be explored. In this larger context, the role of young generation which is still in schools and colleges needs to be understood. Youth has a potential to be the carrier of change. They are the ones who are capable to challenge the present by courageously visualizing the ‘unseen’ future. However, do our schools, our colleges teach our children this cardinal truth of life? Do our education system, here in Nagaland capable enough to set the soul of a student on fire? Do we teach them to value their existence? Do we teach them how to think independently? Do we teach our students how to free themselves from every dogma in the society? Do we teach them that they are the valuable assets of society? Do we teach them that they are necessary ‘Wheels’ of the Chariot of their community? Do we teach them how their history, their present and their future are connected with each other? Do we teach them as to how Education should not be seen merely as an opportunity to survive but to change the world by making a positive impact on the lives of people-who are poor, blind, helpless and crippled? People who are the victims of the past do not have any other option but to resort to relentless struggle for

Should UIDAI maintain a death master file?

ndian government felt the need for issuing an identity card in 1999 after the Kargil war, as it can check illegal migrant by providing identity cards on a priority basis for those people living along Border States. The government of India was set up UIDAI in Jan 2009, but to give a legislative backing Indian government passed it as a money bill in March 2016. Since inception aadhaar has become synonymous as a social security number, as Supreme Court has backed to avail benefit of social program of government one has to have an aadhaar, as it has resulted in exclusion of ghost beneficiaries. Unlike social security number of US which is a nine digit number issued to US citizens, primarily for social security, while aadhaar is a twelve digit number issued to Indian citizen based on biometric and demographic data, it becomes difficult to make multiple aadhaar number as aadhaar collects biometric data they can only obtain single aadhaar card which helps to eliminate ghost beneficiaries. The social security number in US does not contain biometric data which makes it possible to use social security number in identity theft, which makes harder to access that a certain social security number truly belongs to individual without relying on other documentation which even might otherwise have got by using fraudulent social security number. While for aadhaar it does not require significant

‘change’. Naga students and all other students belonging to persecuted communities must necessarily understand that their future lies in the future of their people. A world which is stigmatized by the corruption, poverty, discrimination, HIV-AIDS and Alcoholism, where people are mute spectators, where life is lived like a ‘zombie’, where culture has reduced to become a ‘habit’-a young Man and a woman with a vision and character can cause a ‘Change’. A learned man has a responsibility to wake up those who are in deep slumber. A society of sleeping people becomes an easy target for the disrupters having keen interest in keeping the people in intoxicated state of mind. Our Naga society which is still at its infant stage has trapped in the whirlwind of materialism that blinded people who could not rise themselves from the problems that they are trapped in. Considering the materialistic nature of institutionalized religions it may not be wrong to say that even the ‘God’ has not been able to escape from the clutches of the Consumerism, Market and Money. There are people who are of the opinion that the investment, money, free market and liberal-global economy is the key to liberate the man from the pain of historic injustice and traumatic present. However, I beg to differ and say on record that the ‘History has Witnessed that, Money Has Never Solved The Problems Of The People’. Money cannot be synonymous to Justice, Equality, Liberty, Fraternity and Dignity. We need to create a generation of people who will understand the ground social realities and would not go astray by the astronomical claims made by corporate gurus who are so fond of giving lectures on ‘development’ in remote areas without understanding socio-cultural-political realities of the region. Our students from persecuted communities who still face discrimination in the name of caste, race, gender and religion in different parts of the country should very

well understand the nature and depth of the struggle that they have to undertake. The girls from the northeast region going outside to study or work has been seen and portrayed as ‘exotic sex object’ in other parts of the country, underlines a struggle that they have to undertake. The question before Dalit, Tribal and other students from socially backward and persecuted communities is not just a question of survival but a survival with a potential to grow, progress with equal opportunities, equitable access to resources, dignity and honour. It is said that Child is a Father of Man. The education institutions, teachers as well as the students must understand their individual as well collective responsibilities towards themselves and society. The upliftment of people would not be done by the others but the people themselves. Therefore, the roles that education institutions and students play are very critical in the context of the larger vision of allencompassing development of the society. Therefore, I appeal to all the students to work hard with a dream of ‘Change’ for self-development so that you would be well equipped to serve the humanity. Also, I would like to appeal the teaching community to give wings of wisdom to the students and help them to free themselves from every type of dogma that could become barrier in their emotional and intellectual growth as well as overall development as a ‘Free Man’. Let us remember that the Ideal teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they invite their students to cross, then having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create bridges of their own. We as Academicians and Thinkers has a sacred duty to create a ‘Man of tomorrow’ who not only will lead the society, but defend its right to dissent, struggle, survive, flourish, grow, progress and prosper. Naga National Council’s position

T

he Nagas are a people and a nation on the basis of undisputable facts which are a matter of record of their political history. The validity and legitimacy of the claim of sovereignty of the Naga nation stems from the historical fact that they fought against the British invasion of their land for over half a century to defend their sovereignty, land and dignity till they were impliedly defeated and a no more fight agreement was made in our Naga tradition with our own terms and conditions in the last quarter of the 19th Century. The Nagas then made their position absolutely clear in 1929 to the British Simon Commission that they retained their right to decide their own future on the departure of the British from their Empire in South Asia. On August 14, 1947, one day before India’s independence, the Nagas under NNC reaffirmed the stand their elders had declared 18 years earlier. The position on sovereignty taken by the Nagas is not because Nagas are against or anti-India. The Nagas regard themselves as one of the honourable neighbours of India by virtue of facts of their political history. The NNC is the only mandated political institution of the Nagas and the undisputable mandate was reaffirmed by the plebiscite of 1951 with 99.9 percent of its people by democratic means for the interest of all. The plebiscite further irrevocably affirmed and declared that the Nagas shall defend its non negotiable sovereignty at all costs. Therefore, no Naga settlement or political movement can become unique, historical, acceptable and honourable, if the plebiscite of 1951 is subtracted. In this connection, the NNC is pleased to state that the civil society of the Nagas till date stands committed to the 1951 plebiscite which is also the only mandated stand of the Nagas. The NNC, together with other political groups, after resisting India’s illegal and forceful occupation of the Naga homeland for over 70 years has understood that it is too difficult for India to negotiate for recognition of Naga sovereignty in spite of the aforesaid unique historical facts. It is a fact that the Naga sovereignty is a bigger problem for India than the Nagas, which is damaging its image in the world community however, India’s problem is India’s responsibility. The NNC for and on behalf of the Nagas as being mandated has hereby clarified its position once and for all that under whatsoever situation, it shall never - never involve or endorse anyone for any talk or settlement with any authority, if the famous plebiscite of 1951 and sovereignty are to be subtracted or compromised. The NNC Regional Presidential meeting held at Kohima on 4th March 2019 under the leadership of NNC President Rtd. General Thinoselie M. Keyho shall never betray its people for both the living as well as the death and shall continue to defend its mandated stand of the Naga sovereignty under any circumstance by absolutely non violence and democratic means. 1. The hypocritical hype of Indian politics

D

ear Indian Politicians, when you came asking for our votes, you came to us by choppers and flyers, embraced us, enthralled us and even washed our worn out feet. But, How long will you befriend us before elections and distance us during our crises? We ask for justice and you gave us bills, sitting in the comforts of the parliament. We protest for our right to exist with dignity, and you gave us bullets and hosepipe-raining water. Even, with that you are not satisfied; so you send us loads of mercenaries in uniform, who knows only to boot, loot and shoot. India-that prides in itself as the largest democracy-must strive to understand what North-East people wants, and we must know what we are asking for. We are asking for recognition and you gave retaliation; we are asking for modernization and you gave us monetisation. We are organizing demonstrations, you are visiting us with destruction and demonization. How sacrilegious are the perverted lies you are peddling with insolent impunity! We know leopards cannot be zebras, yet, we gave you a chance. But you took your chance, by deceiving us with your sweet words (the chai walah… Jalebi is ever sweeter). How long will you corrupt our hearts and our minds by bribing our politicians and leaders? We trust them no more, you are all the same, except for a few (Most of you are, wolf in sheep’s clothing). How long will you make us vulnerable by framing conniving political agendas (Bills and Amendments) that makes no difference at the grassroots? How long will you withhold justice from flowing like a mighty river to the hollowed dwellings of the ‘Seven Sisters’? We got hyped by the advertisement of your government. Now, it is

your turn to seethe placards we hold in Delhi, Itanagar, Kohima, Imphal, Aizawl, Guwahati, etc…. They are all for you….Check it out!. You can watch porn in the parliament sessions, but you shy away from seeing our nakedness demonstrated in the streets. You make pompous speeches about unity and solutions, but you behave as the hideous agents of segregation, polarization and oppression. You talk about freedom of practice but took away our beef; you talk about freedom of religion but burned down our churches. How long can the paper cards hold our seething resentment? How long your impervious lies hold the floodgates of the righteous might of perhaps insignificant common multitudes? Is your political vision too narrow that it can’t see beyond five years. Your incurable apathy towards our demands are like rubbing salt into our bleeding wounds…with every new government formed in the centre (Delhi), our patience and demand for justice are put to test. The world is a mirror, but Northeast is like a Boomerang, it will come back, with the same force and

speed. When that day comes, soon it will, prepare to eat the dirt, to take back your words and eat your own vitriol vomit. Nothing comes easy; aspirations, feelings and solidarities are even harder. But when you don’t give a damn; the dams of prejudices stocked, injustices accumulated and atrocities committed will break into rivers of revenge and violent resistance. Sometime we wonder whether this has been your agenda all along! We must not allow this to happen, but human capacities are limited. Unless, a power from beyond intervenes. So we look above, to a power stronger and mightier than us for strength to persevere. But how far can this prolong? How many times will our rights be pasted in posters and protest? How many times will our voices disappear with the chimes of the broken wind? Oh’ God! Let my country awake, from the slumber of fake peace and it’s chronic apathy. Social security administration in US maintains a death master file of social security number for those who are deceased, the number is removed from active list and are not reused. The social security administration started handing the social security number in 1936. While the death master list was started around 1980, there are around 111 million people on the death master file, while around 16 million were never included in it. The social security administration estimated that the US government spent about 124 billion dollar in improper payment. Unlike Social Security Administration in US, UIDAI does not have a provision of maintaining the files of a person who is death, as aadhaar helps to identify the section of population who is most marginalised. The government should keep track of deaths Sir, as a lot of benefit is attached With the board exams recently over, students are left with ample time to being alive and having an as they wait for their results. SC sends Ayodhya dispute for mediation in camera New Delhi, Mar 8 (AGENCIES): A five-judge Bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, on March 8 sent the Ayodhya dispute for mediation in camera. It appointed a panel of mediators, with former judge of the apex court Justice F.M.I. Kalifulla as its chairman and comprising spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and senior advocate Sriram Panchu, a pioneer in alternative dispute resolution

mechanisms. The mediation would start in a week’s time in Faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh of which the disputed area in Ayodhya is a part of. The court stressed the need for “utmost confidentiality” in the conduct of mediation to ensure its success and went to the extent of opining that the media should refrain from reporting on the proceedings. “We are of the further opinion that while the mediation

Ranjan Gogoi

proceedings are being carried out, there ought not to be any reporting of the said proceedings either in print

or electronic media,” it said. However, it stopped short of passing any specific gag order on the media and left it on the mediators to pass “necessary orders in writing, if so required, to restrain publication of the details of the mediation proceedings.” The time given for mediation is eight weeks but the court urged the mediators to “conclude the proceedings at the earliest.” The mediators would have to file a status report in the court in four

weeks. The Muslim parties get the eight-week time to examine the accuracy and relevance of the State government’s official translation of thousands of pages of oral depositions and exhibits in the Ayodhya title suit appeals pending since 2010 in the apex court. In fact, the court had invoked Section 89 of the Civil Procedure Code (CPC) to propose mediation as an “effective utilisation of time” in the interregnum. The CJI

had expressed the hope that mediation may spell a peaceful end to the volatile dispute between the members of the two religious faiths. The court had pushed for a possible out-of-court settlement despite objections raised by some Hindu parties that their faith in Lord Rama’s birthplace is “nonnegotiable.” “Notwithstanding the lack of consensus between the parties in the matter we are of the view that an attempt should be

made to settle the dispute by mediation,” the court had observed. The court had brushed aside the objections raised by several parties, including that public notice should be issued, as the dispute affects the religious sentiments of Hindus and Muslims across the spectrum. They had quoted Order 1 rule 8 and Order 23 rule 3-B of the CPC, both of which mandates that all stakeholders should be issued notice in a

“representative suit.” B u t b o t h Ju s t i c e s Ashok Bhushan and S.A. Bobde had prima facie shot down the argument, saying the provisions dealt with procedure at the time of institution of a suit and not in the appellate stage, that too, in the Supreme Court. Justice Bobde had said if the private appellants had represented the two faiths in the lower courts, it could very well do so in the process of mediation.

Sidhu not among speakers at Rahul Gandhi’s Moga rally

Navjot Singh Sidhu (File)

Chandigarh, Mar 8 (AGENCIES): A controversy erupted after the rally of Congress president Rahul Gandhi at Moga on Thursday after Punjab local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu was not included in the list of speakers. A miffed Sidhu said it was the first time after former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal’s rally in Amritsar in 2004 that he has not been allowed to speak. Sidhu was then Amritsar MP from the BJP. “If I am not good enough to speak at Rahul’s rally, I am not good enough as a speaker and a campaigner. Whether I am invited to speak or not is something that is not under my control. But it has shown me my place and made it clear

who all from the Congress will campaign for the party in the coming Lok Sabha polls,” Sidhu said. Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar said Sidhu should have been among the speakers and not inviting him to speak was an oversight. “Sidhu is our party’s star campaigner. It was an oversight on part of the party. Rahul ji asked me if all had spoken, when he (Rahul) was invited to speak. I told him I do not know as I had come with him,” Jakhar said. The event was anchored by state cooperation minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, whose department was the organiser of the debt waiver function. Randhawa said he was asked by chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh and All India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge of Punjab affairs, Asha Kumari, to name just four speakers. “I was told that Rahul ji was getting late for another rally at Kangra in Himachal so only Jakhar, the CM, Asha Kumari and Rahul ji will speak.

Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers has put out list of 390 anti-cancer nonscheduled medicines with MRP reduction up to 87 per cent. The revised prices would come into effect from March 8, 2019,” an official release said. A total of 390 brands -- that is 91 per cent of the 426 brands reported by the manufacturers -- showed downward price movement, it added. This move is expected to benefit 22 lakh cancer patients in the country and would result in annual savings of around Rs 800 crore to the patients, the release said. “The trade margin rationalisation for 42 anti-

The direct tax target was revised upwards to Rs 12 lakh crore for 2018-19 fiscal while for GST, the target was further lowered for the current fiscal. The government had budgeted to collect over Rs 7.43 lakh crore from Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the current fiscal ending March. However, in the revised estimates, the revenue mopup has been pegged at over Rs 6.43 lakh crore.

New Delhi, Mar 8 (PTI): The maximum retail price of 390 non-scheduled cancer medicines have been reduced by up to 87 per cent, which would result in annual savings of around Rs 800 crore for the patients, the government said Friday. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) on February 27 had brought 42 non-scheduled anti-cancer drugs under price control, capping trade margin at 30 per cent. Manufacturers and hospitals were directed to convey the revised MRP, to be effective from March 8, MUMBAI, Mar 8 (PTI): E-commerce and consumer based on the trade margin Internet companies have raised over $7 billion in private formula. “The NPPA under equity and venture capital funds in 2018, says a report. New Delhi, Mar 8 (IANS): Government revenue will be under pressure in the current fiscal year with a senior finance ministry official on Friday suggesting that there could be a further fall in GST revenue while the direct tax numbers may just be about near the revised target. But the official also said there would be some savings on capital expenditure side that could help bridge the gap. He, however, did not give the details on the quantum of savings and also didn’t clarify if these savings would come from a cut in the capital expenditure. Some of the revenue expenditures such as interest payment obligations and subsidy have already been rolled over to the next fiscal to keep fiscal deficit under check in view of falling tax revenues. “We will probably do

D’ana jewels will be available in minimal pieces in variety of collections and that she will be coming up new collections every two to three months since it manufacturing process is time consuming, she added. Foreigner’s Jeff Pilson doesn’t believe ‘rock is dead’

F

oreigner bassist Jeff Pilson has dismissed the notion that rock is dead, saying that “there’s always gonna be the inclination for somebody” to play “rebellious, expressive music.” While rock ‘n’ roll has been king of the music world for decades, in the past few years, it’s been unseated by the growing popularity of hip-hop. This has caused many pundits to proclaim the genre “dead” from an industry perspective, noting that it has been eclipsed in all measures by pop, hiphop, and EDM. Pilson, who has previously played with Dokken and Dio, spoke about rock’s supposed diminishing status during a brand new interview with Music Legends. Addressing the whole

“rock is dead” debate, Jeff said: “Rock, to me, is meant to be rebellious, expressive music. It doesn’t have to be rebellious, but there’s always been a certain degree of rebellion in there. So I view it as important that it be challenging music. So I don’t believe rock’s dead, because I think there’s always gonna be the inclination for somebody to wanna come out and do that. Is it gonna be the rock that you or I may recognize? Maybe not. Maybe it’s gonna come in some other form. Maybe some young kids are gonna discover something that’s different that maybe to you and I won’t seem like rock music, but it is their rock music. And so in that sense, I don’t think it’s ever gonna die. I

think there will come along other things. Having said that, there certainly doesn’t appear to have been too much new very recently. I mean, there are some great rock bands out there, but I don’t feel that we’ve had a radical explosion of something, like when The Beatles hit or when Guns N’ Roses hit or when Nirvana hit. We haven’t had one of those kind of tidal waves in a long time, and I do think we’re long overdue for one. And again, it may come in a form that you and I don’t recognize. But either way, it’s gotta come. And I don’t see it coming yet, but I think it will.” A few years ago, Kiss bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons told Esquire magazine that “rock did not die of old age. It was murdered. Some brilliance, somewhere, was going to be expressed and now it won’t because it’s that much harder to earn a living playing and writing songs. No one will pay you to do it.” A number of hard rock and heavy metal musicians have weighed in on the topic in a variety of interviews over the last couple of years, with some digging a little deeper into Simmons’s full remarks and others just glossing over the headline. (Blabbermouth)

launching and collaboration with the three brands on the auspicious International Women’s Day. She said the main idea behind the programme was to encourage and empower women working behind the brands. Talking about Chizami Weaves (CW), she said it was an initiative of North East Network (NEN), a women organization. CW develops textiles using loin

loom, one the oldest methods adopted by humans which is still used by the Nagas and other tribes of North East India. Their products are purely hand woven by rural Naga women, mostly Chakhesang Nagas. The weavers have kept the traditional knowledge and skills alive while sustaining their families and communities at the same time. The motifs are inspired by nature and the local culture. About PenThrill, Kichu said that the store has collaborated with Fusion Store. Penthrill is the “ink to your story” and takes pride in associating itself with authors and has distinguished itself as a home for poets and writers by turning their dreams into reality. Further, she maintained that altogether Fusion Store comprises of 27 brands, out of which 21 brands are delivered by the women entrepreneurs and six by men which exemplifies equality, she added. In a letter to Modi, the text of which was released to the media here, Palaniswami said Abhinandan who piloted a MiG 21 Bison was taken into custody by Pakistan armed forces. Palaniswami said Abhinandan displayed amazing poise and confidence in the face of adverse conditions, which has won him many hearts across the country. “It is appropriate that he be awarded India’s highest military honour, Param Vir Chakra (PVC), for displaying most inimitable gallantry and valour,” Palaniswami said. Palaniswami said a suicide terror attack by a Pakistan-based terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) on February 14 led to the martyrdom of 40 brave CRPF troopers. “In response, India initiated counter terrorism action against a training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed in Pakistan. One Pakistan Air Force fighter was shot down by MiG 21 Bison of the Indian Air Force when it tried to violate our air space,” Palaniswami said.

Mumbai, Mar 8 (IANS): Farmers suicides in Maharashtra have virtually doubled during 2015-2018, under the tenure of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, compared to the period 2011-2014, a RTI reply has revealed. According to the data received by RTI activist Jeetendra Ghadge, compared to 6,268 cases of farmers suicides recorded between 2011-2014 during the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party rule, under the present Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena regime it has almost doubled to 11,995 between 2015-2018. The highest number of cases have been notched in the Amravati Division of the suicide-prone districts in Vidarbha region of eastern Maharashtra. Incidentally, Fadnavis hails from Nagpur in Vidarbha, as also Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. Despite the high num-

ber of suicides, the RTI replies submitted by the Revenue Department have revealed that even the compensation of Rs 100,000 is also denied to the farmers’ families. In 2014, 1,358 farmers’ families received the compensation while another 674 cases were rejected. But in 2018, total compensation was given in 1,330 incidents while 1,050 claims were rejected, Ghadge pointed out. Again, the high suicide areas in Amravati Division have recorded the highest number of rejections of compensation cases, and in 2016 and 2018, there were more rejections than approvals. In March 2015, the then Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse had announced in the legislature that the compensation in such cases would be increased from Rs 100,000 to Rs 500,000, plus a life insurance policy covering all farmers.

Deciding which party would contest from these seats is expected to be the biggest hurdle. With fewer numbers, the JDS is expected to get the seats it wants, sources indicated. After Wednesday’s meeting between Gandhi and the former Prime Minister, working out these details and prepping a blueprint had been left to the state general secretaries of the two parties. The Chief Minister is expected to iron out the final deal at a meeting with Rahul Gandhi later today or tomorrow. Amid regular friction between the two allies, the seat-sharing negotiations had drawn much attention. The opposition parties as well as the BJP have been keeping tabs -- one to gauge how the Congress treats smaller regional allies, and the BJP watching for signs of rift. Kumaraswamy said his party is yet to decide whether his father will contest from the Mandya seat. “At present he says he doesn’t want to contest,” he told reporters. The Chief Minister’s family has been accused of nepotism regarding distribution of tickets.

Aus beat India by 32 runs in 3rd ODI

Australian bowler PJ Cummins celebrates with teammates after the dismissal of Ambati Rayudu during the 3rd ODI match, in Ranchi on Friday. (PTI)

Ranchi, Mar 8 (Agencies): India skipper Virat Kohli’s gritty century went in vain as India suffered a 32-run defeat against Australia in the third contest of the fivematch rubber at the JSCA stadium here on Friday. Usman Khawaja’s hundred and Aaron Finch’s 93 saw Australia put up a more than decent 313 for five and India could manage only 281 in 48.2 overs, that too solely due to Kohli’s 123 off 95 balls. It was yet another superlative effort from the Indian skipper, who lacked

adequate support from the other end as Australia kept the five-match series consequential going into the fourth game in Chandigarh on Sunday. Kohli scored his first 50 off 52 balls and the next 50 off just 33 balls. However Adam Zampa (3/70) yorked the Indian skipper after having accounted for former skipper MS Dhoni (26). Kohli had three significant partnerships - 59 with Dhoni for the fourth wicket, 88 with Jadhav for the fifth wicket and 45 with Vijay Shankar for the sixth

- but none good enough to take India across the line. Shikhar Dhawan (1), Rohit Sharma (14) and Ambati Rayudu (2) were dismissed cheaply as India was left tottering at 27 for three and it was always a difficult task from there on. After winning the toss, Indian pacers covered up commendably for a rare off-day endured by the spinners as visitors were restricted to 313 for five despite a 193-run opening stand between skipper Finch and Khawaja. Khawaja (104 off 113

balls) scored his maiden ODI ton while Finch (93 off 99 balls) chose this particular match to get back to form. Maxwell (47 off 31 balls) also contributed with lusty blows. The Indian spinners - Ravindra Jadeja (0/64 in 10 overs) and Kedar Jadhav (0/32 in 2 overs) - were carted all around the park. Kuldeep Yadav (3/64 in 10 overs), however, redeemed himself at the back-end of the innings. The trio gave away 160 runs in 22 overs and it was left to Jasprit Bumrah (0/53) and Mohammed Shami (1/52 in 10 overs) to maintain the discipline during the final overs as the total could have gone close to the 350-run mark. In the final 10 overs, Australia could score only 69 runs, despite being 244 for two after 40 overs, courtesy Bumrah and Shami who bowled 64 dot balls between them. The fielding on the day was also way below par as Dhawan, at square leg, dropped Khawaja, who tried a reverse sweep, while batting on 17 off Jadeja’s bowling. Kohli, Kedar and Bumrah were all guilty of slip-ups on the field which also released the pressure on the visitors. Brief Scores: Australia 313/5 (Usman Khawaja 104, Aaron Finch 93; Kuldeep Yadav 3/64) beat India 281 all out (Virat Kohli 123, Vijay Shankar 32; Pat Cummins 3/37) by 32 runs.

Europa League: Chelsea beat Dynamo Kyiv

Chelsea players celebrate after scoring a goal during their Europa League round-of-16 clash against Dynamo Kyiv.

London, Mar 8 (IANS): Chelsea and Napoli have got off to strong starts in their Europa League round-of-16 clashes, with each club winning 3-0 in first-leg contests against Dynamo Kyiv and Red Bull Salzburg respectively. Chelsea cruised to an easy win in their first-leg match at Stamford Bridge in London. Pedro opened the scoring in the 17th minute when he finished off a give-and-go with Olivier Giroud, who set up the goal with a sublime back-heeled pass through the legs of a Dynamo defender. Willian gave the Blues a 2-0 lead in the 65th minute with a free kick that left visiting goalkeeper Denys Boyko frozen while Callum HudsonOdoi capped off the easy victory with a score on a rapid counter-attack just before second-half stoppage time. On the play, Pedro sent a sublime ball across the field to Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who deftly gathered it and then set up the English winger for a right-footed strike past Boyko. While Chelsea imposed their dominance, their cross-

town rival Arsenal had a miserable outing Thursday in a 3-1 loss to Ligue 1 side Rennes. The Gunners took the lead in the third minute but then gave up three unanswered goals at Roazhon Park to fall into a big hole heading into the second leg. Meanwhile, Napoli scored twice early in the first half to take full command of their twomatch series against Salzburg at Stadio San Paolo, Naples. Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik kicked off the scoring in the 10th minute when he received a pass at a spot just outside the area, dribbled around oncoming goalkeeper Alexander Walke and then tapped the ball home. Fabian Ruiz Peña then doubled the home side’s lead eight minutes later on a leftfooted volley from the edge of the area after receiving a pass from Jose Callejon. The final goal came early in the second half off the head of Salzburg defender Jerome Onguene, who inadvertently scored past his own goalkeeper in the 58th minute while trying to clear a pass over the

crossbar. The second legs of these round-of-16 match-ups will be played on March 14.

Rennes beat Arsenal 3-1

A r s e n a l ’s E u r o p a League hopes suffered a serious setback after a 3-1 first-leg loss at Stade Rennes in round of 16 action. The Gunners took early control of the game at Roazhon Park when Alex Iwobi scored in the third minute, a curling cross-shot that bounced off the far post and into the net. But things began to turn sour for Arsenal afterward. Benjamin Bourigeaud’s equalised things for the Ligue 1 hosts in the 38th minute. Three minutes later, Arsenal went down a player when Sokratis Papastathopoulos sent off on a red card. Rennes took the lead on Nacho Monreal’s own goal in the 65th minute and Ismaila Sarr’s specatucular header off a left-wing cross two minutes from full-time secured Rennes the deserved win. The return leg is on March 14 at Emirates Stadium.
