Opposition questions Shah’s casualty claim

NEW DELHI, MAR 4 (AGENCIES): Seeking to put the government on the back foot, opposition parties Monday latched on to BJP chief Amit Shah’s claim of 250 casualties in the Indian Air Force’s air strike in Pakistan’s Balakot to ask how he got such top secret information. Congress asked the government what was the basis of Shah’s claim and why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not giving details of the casualties. Congress spokesperson RPN Singh accused the prime minister and the BJP leadership of politicising the air strike and said Modi should apologise to the country for trying to portray the Indian Air Force IAF as being “weaker without Rafale” and undermining its abilities. Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal also said if Shah is claiming 250 casualties of terrorists in the air strike, why is the prime minister not providing details of the number of deaths. He cited several international media reports claiming “no proof of militant losses at Balakot” and asked Modi if those media organisations are “pro-Pakistan”. Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala referred to Union minister SS Ahluwalia’s reported remarks

and asked the prime minister to share the “truth” with the country. Referring to Shah’s statement on the casualties in the air strike, RPN Singh asked, “Where is this number coming from and who is politicising this whole incident.” Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Monday said Shah took a stand contradictory to that of the armed forces. “The armed forces are also saying this. Amit Shah is saying that the armed forces are lying, 250 (terrorists) were killed. Shah is calling the armed forces a liar. The country will not tolerate this under any circumstances,” Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi. BSP chief Mayawati attacked Modi for his remarks on Rafale jets, asking why BJP government did not induct even one of these fighters into the IAF during its tenure. CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury said discrepancies in the casualty figures indicates that nothing on the air strike is based on facts and accused BJP of politicising the air strike. CPI leader D Raja accused Modi and BJP of “demeaning” the armed forces and questioned Shah’s claims of casualties. NCP’s Sharad Pawar said if the information on casualty had come from defence personnel, he would have taken it seriously.

Over 250 terrorists killed in strike: Shah

While officially no figures have been given, BJP President Amit Shah claimed in Ahmedabad on Sunday that more than 250 terrorists were killed in that airstrike. Addressing the ‘Lakshya JITO’ programme in Ahmedabad, Shah spoke about the two major terror strikes of the last five years and outlined the central government’s response against them. “In 5 years two major incidents happened...In URI and Pulwama.....after Uri attack our army entered Pakistan and did a surgical strike and took revenge of our soldiers’ death.” “After Pulwama attack, everyone thought surgical strike can’t be done this time..now what will happen?... At that time Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government did an airstrike on the 13th day and killed more than 250 terrorists without any harm on our side,” the BJP president Amit Shah said.

Strikes were meant to warn, not kill: MoS

Amid questions by opposition leaders about the casualty figures in India’s air strikes in Pakistan, Union minister of state, electronic and IT, S S Ahluwalia said that the strikes were meant to scare and warn and not to take human lives. “Has Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the 300 figure (of casualty), or did any spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party say so? Did Amit Shah give any figure even once? The air strikes were designed to demonstrate that we can enter your home, despite your (Pakistan’s) elaborate security arrangements, and can strike at will at terror locations that we have properly identified,” said Ahluwalia, the Darjeeling MP, in Siliguri on Friday. “We did not want any human casualty,” the minister said in Bengali.

Ravi clarifies to CCSU lockdown DEO, SDEO offices CPI-M pact with Cong to fight BJP report on talks

DIMAPUR, MAR 4 (NPN): Deputy National Security Adviser and Interlocutor for Naga talks, R.N. Ravi Monday clarified that he had already enunciated the status of the ongoing Naga talks with various organizations during his recent visit to Nagaland and which was also reported in Nagaland Post on March 1, 2019. He said this when Nagaland Post contacted him Monday to confirm about a report published by a news agency-- Naga peace pact ‘any day’. The report, quoting government sources, said with the Naga groups expected to reciprocate with “pragmatic flexibility”, the final agreement could be signed any day. Sources also stated that the government was ready to consider a Naga flag for a pan-Naga cultural body and to term the final agreement as “Naga Constitution”. However, Ravi, who is in Delhi, said he was not aware of the report. In an exclusive interview to Nagaland Post, Ravi had said that though Centre was ready for a final solution, the “differing positions” on the demand for separate Naga flag and Constitution has delayed signing of the final agreement.

DIMAPUR, MAR 4 (NPN): Confederation of Chang Students’ Union (CCSU) has affirmed that the lockdown of offices of district education officer (DEO) and sub-divisional education officer (SDEO) in Tuensang would continue. In a statement, CCSU general secretary, C Pongsu, stated that the offices would remain locked until their demands were met.

CCSU has demanded immediate retention of downgraded government high schools (GHSs) including GHS Chingmei and GHS Noksen. It has demanded the education department to give written assurance. On Sunday, the union had stated that they were forced to resort to such a step as the ultimatum served on the department concerned went unanswered till date.

NEW DELHI, MAR 4 (IANS): The CPI-M on Monday said that in order to defeat the BJP-led alliance and ensure an alternative secular government is formed at the Centre, it would lend support to the Congress in states where it is in direct contest with the BJP. The party said that in West Bengal, it won’t go for mutual contest in the present six sitting Lok Sabha seats which are currently held by Congress and the Left Front. At a meeting of its Central Committee here on Monday, CPI-M reiterated that its electoral tactics will be based on defeating the BJP alliance, increasing the strength of the CPI-M and the Left in the Lok Sabha, and ensure that an alternative secular government is formed at the Centre.

We don’t count casualties: IAF chief Amidst a raging controversy over the damage inflicted on the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terror camp in Balakot, IAF chief BS Dhanoa on Monday said his force does not count human casualties but the airstrike had hit the “target”. “The Indian Air Force is not in a position to clarify the number of casualties. The government will clarify that. We don’t count human casualties. We do not count how many people were dead. We count what targets we have hit or not. We hit our target. The air force doesn’t calculate casualty numbers. The government does that,” he told the media in Coimbatore. “The target has been clearly amplified by the Foreign Secretary in a statement. If we plan to hit the target, we hit the target. Otherwise why would he (Pakistan Prime Minister) have responded. If we dropped bombs in the jungles why would he respond,” Dhanoa said in his first public remarks on the February 26 air force operation. Dhanoa said the bomb damage as-

sessment was a different aspect and it was difficult for the IAF to confirm casualties. How many people were inside the targets cannot be said. He also defended the use of the vintage MiG21 Bison. “...All aircraft are capable of fighting the enemy. The Mig-21 Bison is a capable aircraft, it has been upgraded, it has better radar, air-to air missiles and better weapons system,” he said. Refusing to get drawn into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comment that the outcome would have been different had Rafale jets joined the service, Dhanoa said that after the upgradation, the Bison is 3.5 generation with a range of missiles and avionics.

DIMAPUR, MAR 4 (NPN): In a development that is once again likely to raise hackles, fish imported from Andhra Pradesh and sold in the markets of Kohima, Mokokchung, Zunheboto and Wokha has once again been found to be injected with formalin and sans any certification from Health authorities concerned. Following this, Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) minister S Pangnyu Phom convened an emergency meeting with representatives of various social organisations and individuals at deputy commissioner’s (DC) conference hall here on Monday. Though Phom raised the matter of formalincontaminated fish making way into Nagaland, Andhra Pradesh Fish Traders secretary M Veera Satya refused to admit that such contami-

nation could take place. Mentioning that five companies were presently sending fish to Nagaland, he asserted that none could add the highly carcinogenic substance in fish. He said if there was any trace of formalin on the fish, it could very well be naturally occurring and not due to injection of formalin. Satya suggested testing fish with standard CIFT rapid detection kit as, according to him, the method used to detect formalin in Nagaland could be picking up the naturally-occurring formalin in dead fishes for

NDPP lauds budget; slams NPF over stand on Art.371A NPF accuses PDA of not providing answers in NLA Opposition T.R.Zeliang, in response to the demand of the NDPP women wing over his “sexist” remark made during the session. NDPP reminded that a leader of the people ought to be careful about jesting on any sensitive issue both within and outside the house. NDPP however expressed regrets on the three walk outs by the opposition bench during the recently concluded session. It said that though they may be a democratic means, yet it deprived the people from learning more about the activities of the government. NDDP said it was still inopportune that the opposition MLAs staged two walkouts on February 23 and 25 during question hour when they even refused to listen to answers to the questions raised by them. The NDPP said when NPF members were not willing to listen to replies of the government on questions raised , it was amusing that instead, the opposition chose to air their allegations to the media as published on March (Cont’d on p-11) 2 and 4.

JAMNAGAR, MAR 4 (PTI): Asking opposition parties to use common sense, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday slammed them for questioning his statement that the presence of Rafale fighter jets would have given greater firepower to the IAF during the February 27 aerial engagement with Pakistan. “I said if Rafale was acquired in time it would have made a difference (during the February 27 dogfight), but they (opposition parties) say Modi is questioning our air force strike,” Modi said, addressing a gathering in Jamnagar in Gujarat. “Please use common sense. What I said was if we had Rafale at the time (of aerial dogfight), then none of our fighter jets would have gone down and none of theirs saved,” he added. India lost one MiG 21 jet during the fierce dogfight in which one F-16 warplane of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) was also shot down. “If they (opposition) don’t understand me what can I do. They have their own limitations,” he told the audience during his 40-

NDPP, NPF attack each other on house proceedings DIMAPUR, MAR 4 (NPN): NDPP has lauded chief minister Neiphiu Rio for presenting the budget for the year 2019-20 on February 26 , which it described as “people-centric and youth-oriented with a vision for all-round development of the State through transparency, accountability and good governance.” On the other hand, the NDPP has also expressed appreciation of the participation and contribution of all PDA constituents during the recently concluded third session of the 13th Nagaland legislative Assembly besides acknowledging the “excellent address” of state Governor P.B.Acharya on the opening day. Further NDPP in a communiqué issued through its Media & Communication Committee expressed appreciation of the opposition NPF for active participation in the recently concluded budget session and hoped this would continue in future sittings of the house. NDPP also appreciated the apology tendered by the Leader of

PM takes a jab at Oppn over Balakot and Rafale

NPF has once again charged the ruling PDA coalition led by Neiphiu Rio of failing to provide convincing answers during the justconcluded session of Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA). The opposition party also released a list of questions put by leader of opposition (LoO) TR Zeliang. NPF alleged that Rio, who also holds the finance portfolio, failed to provide any answer to the queries by Zeliang related to Budget 2019-20 that was presented on February 25. During the debate, the LoO had pointed out anomalies in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) wherein the collection rate in the State was shown has having gone down. In 2017-18, it was 25%, which decreased to 11.4% in 2018-19 and estimated to be 9.72% in 2019-20. Therefore, Zeliang had questioned the chief minister as to how the GST collection had gone down. As Rio failed to come up with any answer on the floor of the House, he was asked by the LoO to publish his answer in the local

dailies. However, the opposition party noted that nothing had been clarified in the local dailies till date. It claimed that before introduction of GST, the DAN government had introduced online system on Central Sales Tax (CST) and the growth rate was 19.60% in 2017-18. Further, additional fund released from April 1, 2018 till date, as stated by Rio, was Rs 735.84 crore that included re-imbursement amount of Rs 220.09 crore. To this, Zeliang sought to know how the remaining amount of Rs 514.75 crore, after deducting the reimbursed amount of Rs 220.09 crore, was spent and through which department. However, despite his request to publish the same in the local dailies due to paucity of time during the debate, the opposition party said till date Rio had failed to clarify. Zeliang had also asked why the department failed to specify the break-up amount or the scheme under which re-imbursement had taken place, but it remained unanswered as (Cont’d on p-12) well.

minute speech rendered in Gujarati. The Congress Sunday claimed that Modi has himself “questioned” the antiterror air strike in Balakot in Pakistan on February 26 by his remarks that the country is feeling the absence of Rafale jets as the results could have been different if India had these aircraft. “Modi has himself questioned the air strike. He said had the Rafale jets been there (with the IAF), the results would have been different. What is the meaning of this?” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari told a press conference in Delhi. The Centre and the Opposition are locked in a massive political row over the deal for procurement of 36 Rafale jets from France.

CNCCI dispels bandh rumour DIMAPUR, MAR 4 (NPN): Dispelling confusion about the Bharat Bandh called by tribals across several states, the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) Monday clarified that business community in the state was not imposing any bandh on March 5. In a press note, CNCCI chairman Dr. Khekugha Muru and general secretary Dr. Seyeville have informed districts’ chamber of commerce and industry to direct businesses establishment within their jurisdiction to continue their business as usual.
